What are some red flags I should look for? I will be getting the phone with an otter box case, lapdock and also a cardock that I will have no use for. The phone and everything is pretty much all brand new and the guy clams it was never rooted or hacked. What are some things I should look for and test besides the obvious? Did these have any screen issues? I just dropped my Galaxy S2 cause of the tremendous screen defects.

Boot it up and check the top left corner of the screen. If it says UNLOCKED then he's lying.
Also, you might want to check for dust under the screen as it could get annoying if you find out later on
Thanks for the swift reply! I was actually gonna be bringing my T-Mobile Sim card along and popping it in. And damn these get the dust under the screen also?
EDIT: Oh did you mean UNLOCKED as far as if it's ever been rooted or hacked?

I though flashing certain ROMs hid the "unlock" text at the top left during boot...?

Yep, the unlocked is refering to an unlocked bootloader. There would be no reason to unlock the bootloader if you werent going to put a custom rom on it or root (gingerbread based) firmwares.
As for things to look for... while this phone has excelent call quality a minority of users have some issues with voices sounding garbled on either end. You might want to throw a sim card in and make a test phone call to see if the one being sold is problematic.
Not sure about that. Ive tried several roms and still had the "UNLOCKED" text on the top left corner. The only time that happened was when I messed up the guide for unlocking bootloader and it disappeared. I have jumped from CM7 to Darkside etcc.. and back. So far its still there.

I would look for the moisture indicator. It varies on where it is located but it should be under the battery door near the sim slot or under the battery itself. It should be a little white circle, if it is red (I think) then it has been exposed to water.

Dust can get under the screen as the digitiser isn't glued to the LCD which makes it easier to repair but problematic for dust (but you can open it if it gets too bad and clean it out which is always a plus).
Yes, the unlocked message means that the person has unlocked the bootloader and messed around with custom roms etc. Check for it to see if he's truthful but if he was clever he could've flashed an SBF which got rid of the unlocked message (and the only way to be sure is to do something in terminal emulator which i can't remember).
Checking the moisture sticker is a must!

As @W3BSurfer mentions, it will still be visible going from ROM to ROM but if you flash an SBF with RSDlite (as @coolnow mentions) then it will be hidden. So, if the guy flashed the official SBF then it really wouldn't matter because it would be stock and should pass the MD5 checksum for future "official" updates (if that is the concern).

That's good and all, but the seller is saying they haven't messed with it so it's more to do with trust than anything. If they have indeed flashed the phone and said they didn't, then what else have they done that they aren't saying?
Very good point. I usually don't trust anyone when buying things anyways and the simple act of inspecting the phone shows a lack of trust regardless but I do agree with you.

That's why i prefer to do business with companies like Amazon who have great customer service. If anything happens which you're not happy about, chances are you'll get taken care of like a spoiled rich kid!

I've had the Nexus since it's release last month and noticed some dust particles under the screen at the bottom left had corner.
After searching and reading a few thread on XDA and other forums it's clear that i'm not alone and the problem has become a lot worse over the past week with a cluster of dust gathering in the corner and a lovely sprinkling of dust across the whole bottom of the screen.
Now i've spoken to HTC UK on the phone who have arranged to collect the unit with a turn around time of 5 working days. All well and good however... I've rooted and updated the ROM to Cyanogen's 5.0.2. Now I understand that this voids your warranty so wondered what to expect one the HTC guys get a hold of the phone and figure this out?

You should post this question in one of the other dust/warranty threads (I suggest mine). Anyway, I'd flash back to stock ROM if I were you, and then cross your fingers.
I sent mine back in with an unlocked bootloader for the dust issue. They exchanged it with no issues.
Ok so you'll have guessed my next question already.
Does flashing back to stock ROM remove any sign of it ever been flashed? e.g. remove the lock icon on bootup? and where would I fijnd the stock ROM?

Maybe because it's just a hardware and no software issue
If you got a software issue and you're rooted: no replacement

Nope... no way to relock the bootloader atm. The padlock will still show if they turn it on. So far they've been good about replacing phones with the dust under warranty (I'm assuming because it's prevalent enough). But technically they could deny a warranty claim according to their warranty provisions.
Still on topic about warranties and dust....
I called in, they said they would do a swap.
Do I have to send in the phone AND accessories, or just the phone?
-Please dont be the accessories...Headphones broke, lost the sleeve..-
Edit- I didn't tell them my bootloader was unlocked, haven't authorized the card yet, either. I'm waiting until tomorrow.
Will they deny my warranty claim?
Some people say they will, others say they won't!
its very confusing...

Its usually always just the phone. I know with tmobile, they make you even take out the battery sd card and sim card.

Oh, that's very nice to know.
I just noticed the dust problem about two weeks ago -_-
I was thinking "Haha, no dust under my screen!" All of a sudden, phone goes off, and there's a few particles ..in the middle of the screen..
i just now fell victim also , will they replace it with a little dust or something significant? i just peeped a small strand of hair on the top part of the screen.
Any way to prevent or minimize the amount of dust entering???...Would a Screen Protector help?

As I stated in the 2nd post... check my original thread regarding the dust issue. It's MANY pages long, but just search for threads I started in this forum and you'll find it easily.
There's a technique that I suggest in which you use a hairdryer to heat up the screen thoroughly then push with a moderate/heavy amount of force till the screen clicks and reseals properly. It's worked for me and numerous others...
Just thought I'd let you guys know. I just called HTC support to try to get my phone repaired. I read other post saying It'd be a good idea to let them know over the phone if it's unlocked so I did. Pretty much hung up the phone on me there, said they can't /won't do anything, even though it's a hardware issue. If i bricked the phone, I can take responsibility in that, but this is just BS.
Anyone else have a similar issue or way to circumvent this? I'm tempted to just brick it and get it replaced as they won't see the unlocked.
Any input would be great. There is a **** ton of dust too.
How long have you had the phone? I got mine three weeks ago but this dust issue is the reason I haven't rooted. So far I have had no issues. Does anyone have a high Res pic of the dust issue? Kind of curious to see it.

Yesterday afternoon the trackball on my N1 stopped working. it'll scroll everywhere but left. Nothing obviously wrong with it, just wont go. thought i'd give it a minute, push and play with it, see if something gives, but no dice. This morning I called HTC, no questions about bootloader which should not affect a hardware issue anyway. Having a replacement sent today.
Now I'll send this phone back, and they will assumably examine and test it. I would agree with any non-hardware issues being rejected due to unlocked bootloader, however if they contact me and say they will not cover the trackball because of this, I will bite the bullet and pay for the repair or replacement, and won't even be pissy about it. I'm just curious what HTC will do, being as this is obviously a hardware issue which unlocking cannot affect.
Seems 50/50 whether they will cover it or not really.
i had a h/w issue and an unlocked bootloader and they still charged me $55 for a replacement
good luck
As of yesterday my trackball has started being annoying, has trouble scrolling downwards, though is not completely broken. I am reluctant to do an exchange, because mine is a special import and has an unlocked bootloader.
Do you have the number for US HTC anyway?

no just curious because I myself am looking into buying this phone. I don't want to repeat someone else's mistakes (if there are any mistakes at all). Not related to this but i've heard plenty of times where someone has said "if I was a little more careful, this wouldn't have happend". i have that as well on cyanogen 506. honestly it should be fine.
if it sticks, clean the ball with a very miniscule amount of alcohol, it'll break the dirt down and youll be good to go. or just dont think about it everytime you touch it (i used to be that way and now im better off. ha)
oh and a friendly tip.
EVERYTIME you're done using the TB, WIPE IT ON YOUR SHIRT or something cloth. thats the best way to clean it. up and down on your shirt. side to side even too

Needless to say I think i've heard every problem you could possibly have with this phone happen. From the screen cracking from a 1 foot drop to the camera app not working, to this post. However, I'm going with the n1 anyway. I'm sure that for every bad nexus one, theres 1,999 good ones. Anyway the only thing I need help with is finding a good case that will prevent damage because I have been known for dropping my phone alot.
My friends have told me to go with the "seidio innocase II" and others have said get a crystal silicone case. What do you recommend?

I've had it since release. I ordered it about 30 minutes after the google.com/phone site was up and running. I am always careful with my devices, and use cases and protectors. My phone has never been dropped or mishandled. By way of example, I also got my G1 on release day, and when i got my nexus I was able to sell it on Ebay for $250 with a review about the immaculate condition of the phone he had received. He said it looked like it just came out of the original box.
I hold babies with less precision and attention.
Easy fix
I had the same problem but mine wouldn't scroll down. After getting the run-around on the phone from HTC, I tried to fix it myself. It took less than 10 seconds.
Just grab the ball using your finger nails or something similar, and twist the ball a little bit. it'll loosen up built up dirt and oil on the sensors, and viola! You should be able to scroll again. If not, then you need a replacement.

You know, I would try this if the replacement hadn't been delivered to my doorstep like 5 minutes ago. Downside = I suppose I will need to run stock for a few weeks in case they refuse to accept the return because of the bootloader. Will make me appreciate devs all the more.

Hi all,
About 2 weeks ago I noticed the bottom left of my screen would activate by itself repeatedly. This mostly seemed to happen when I was trying to type something. It carried on for a while so tonight I flashed a romkitchen rom (2.3.3) (I was on 2.2.1 before), thinking it might be a bug in the system somewhere. Well the problem is still there and I;ve discovered it's always that same corner of the screen that does it no matter what orientation I have it in. I can't even sign into the market at the moment because it makes it impossible to type and the screen ends up freezing until I press the home screen.
Is there anything this could be other than a hardware issue? I did a full factory reset etc during the flashing process.
If I need to send it back would I need to flash it back to stock? I bout my phone from O2 in the UK, where can I get the correct firmware? samfirmware has loads but how do I know which one I need?
Thanks in advance!
Sounds like a hardware issue. Did it ever get rained on or something? Do you use a screen protector?
You might want to edit the topic title, although it is quite funny. Read it and think a bit.

Just to eliminate all possible outside influences, take the protector off and clean the screen really well - and see if it still does it. If it does, then bring it in and try your best to be convincing

I've had the same problem. Unlocked SGS on Orange UK. The problem was on/off for a while but eventually got so bad I couldn't use the phone, removing screen protector made no difference.
I stuck an old Froyo build on and took it into carphonewarehouse, they sent it off and it was fixed in their repair centre. No problems since and that was 4 months ago.
Not sure how you would go about getting the operators rom on there but I'm sure you can mess around with Kies to get it to download the one you want.

Why don't you un-root it? With it being rooted, that would not increase the trade value of the tablet by much.
So I just unroot. I was under the impression once its rooted it pretty much loses the warranty forever so unrooting wont help. I will try unrooting and send it back to amazon (where I bought it from), and see what happens. Thanks.

I had sent my xoom tablet to MaxBack and since I did not accept their re-quote they sent me back my xoom. When I powered it on, the colors including the Motorola Logo have a blue tint. And its very very prominent, not just light but a clearly distorted bluish tint.
Could they have damaged display of the device or is it some setting related, anyone know?

Could be damaged, or they sent you back a different xoom.
This is really crazy. Just wanted to trade in to get a nexus 7. I sent them a absolutely perfect tablet and I get back a totally damaged one.
Very poor first experience with online trade-in. Will have to see what answer they come back to me over the week,I sent them a note abt the issue.

Its weird. Mine had CM10.1 nightlie from Apr 12 when I sent them and the one I got back had the same too. But now after receiving I locked back the xoom to factory settings thinking may be its display settings related. But it has blue all over it. Camera too, when I go into camera blue patches are all over the screen. It definetley seems like messy affair to deal with them now.

Wow, that sucks. If that's the case then they totally damaged it. I hope you opted for the insurance. Let us know what happens.
There was no insurance option atleast not that I noticed. I will share when I hear back from them.

For giggles, reroot it flash an updated ROM. See if it makes a difference.
Things seem to getting only worse with this device. I saw this message and thought to try rooting it again. But only if I could turn the device on. The display wont even come up now. Couple of times it flickered with the display of home screen and thats it now even if I am hard booting nothing happens, display is just blank.
I'll keep trying and will try to root it again if it allows me to.

Very unfair practice this company has. The supervisor from MaxBack called me and said that they did not have any other xoom in their inventory at that time and the device display issue must be because I rooted the device. I told him I have been using the device in rooted state for months now. He is not willing to accept its because of something they did. He said such issues are imminent when rooted and it could have happened on the day I mailed them the device so its not something that they can do anything about. And he says because the device was rooted they rated the device worth $46 but due to this issue now he is willing to increase it to $56. I just hung up the phone. Its totally unfair and ridiculous of them to so bluntly lie. The tablet was flawless before I sent them and now it wont even power on. And he says its because I rooted. Unbelievable, worst experience the very first time of dealing with MaxBack. Now all I can do is dump this in trash, they totally messed up the device.
I also asked him if they saw any issue when they received the tablet. He said they did not see any issue when they received the tablet. Still he says, we have seen such issues with rooted devices so your custom rom or rooting must have caused the issue not our testing of the device. It was pointless.

Damn dude, that is ridiculous. That is some shady businesss. Can u charge it? Does the display *even though it's blank ... show with a back light?
Yes it does charge. It shows the white/green light in bottom when charging. And it does show backlight.

Any headway on getting your device to boot?
before receiving it back from MaxBack, I had already submitted a trade in at amazon assuming I will be able to unroot.
I did unroot after I got it back from maxback although the display was not good and eventually display went completely blank. But I did send it to amazon anyway. I am still waiting to hear from them. I think I may not get anything/much from amazon as I had opted for "no return". Will have to see, they are still processing my trade in.
