Hi all,
I'm new to this forum, and yet i already see countless posts of people asking how could they make their phone faster, what is the best rom and such...
This thread is for those who would wanna speed up their phone by sticking to stock, those who want to change a bit of here and there yet still want stock, noobies who are afraid of flashing kernel or roms and alike.(I'm a noobies myself, so this should't be a problem to everyone else)
Remember that I take no credits in all of the tweaks, but feeling the need to compile it all together so that it could make it easy for others, please say thanks to developer who created all this in the very first place and donate to them if possible.
And always read the OP carefully...
By this point, I'm assuming your phone is rooted with xrecovery enable, and if not,go here,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=928343
Now that you have stock,I know it is killing you because it is so laggy.
First thing I would suggest you to do is transfer whatever app you can to sd card(keep in mind that any apps with active widget most likely will not be working if this is done)......unless you have Link2sd installed or won't mind installing another app(big thanks to Gregbradley)
Secondly,Install Titanium Backup, you can get it from the market, and start deleting/uninstall apps that come with stock that you think useless, see thread below for what apps is safe to uninstall....and then start considering whether these apps worth being there or not....
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1193004
After done with all that, now apply FPS uncapped by zdzihu via xrecovery,
link below,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1192867
By this point, you will already notice huge smoothness with the phone, almost as if you bought a new one
There is also another tweak by zdzihu that i recommend such as Bravia Engine.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1193274&page=3
Now that your phone is so smooth, you will probably fancy all the status switch that comes with custom rom,and you don't have in stock, and you feel uneasy...don't worry because it is here, with stock look!
Head to link below...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1293738
Last but not least, stock battery on our notification window is not so useful(if not useless)...Circle battery bar looks good and yet useful, here is the link
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1194266
along the journey,I notice that after applying fps uncap,my phone works beautifully, but there is one flaw, which, during charging, when i flick between home screen(but not happening when the battery is fully charge),it will move funny(maybe this is just me),however, when I flash the Circle battery mod,it is gone,so instead of my battery sign looks good,it is also accidently fix the funny flick during charging.....
All the tweaks applied above work beautifully with each other,(I'm using it right now for quite a while and no issues at all!),somehow, I held no responsibility if you brick your phone(seriously,I doubt this can happen).
And now download your favorite launcher and start making it look the way you want it.Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, and do not hesitate to ask me if there is anything arise and I will help where I can...
Here is mine

Good Luck all and have nice a day...
If you use link2sd you can move all apps to the sd card and still use widgets on the homescreen. Its far better than just using the native move to sd.
Just flash this to get it working
http://www.mediafire.com/?7w9v9eptjcieh
Secondly, if you use the grey circle battery mod, dont forget that has been cooked using wolfs framework-res.apk. Very similar to stock but not 100% stock so there "may" be other UI differences and glitches. (I know you said you are using it fine, but its optimised for stock rom, far better to cook your own at http://uot.dakra.lt/)

read the link about it,
Basicaly stock x10 has the frames per second (fps) capped at 33.
This tweak gets rid of that cap. All custom roms use it (I think, I cant beleive anyone wouldnt put it in a custom rom)

GO Launcher is a rather "heavy" app and, take my word for it, not "well-written". BUT it mostly performs very well and it's the most good-looking and customisable option available. I use it on both my X10 and my Arc and I wouldn't change it for any other atm.

Really? I've never tried it. I just looked at the Sony Home and its using 36+ megs and 5.8% of total cpu, ADW ex is about the same. So I wouldn't think it would be much more resource hungry than them would it?

Depends very much on the amount of widgets you use.
I use only 3 widgets and GO takes up 9,4 MB of RAM. Battery Stats has it most of the time at around 5th place in CPU Process counter, which is acceptable for me.

I have 7 active widgets running 24/7,and I don't have battery stats to measure mine, but it's usage doesn't even get in the list of battery consumption(unless I'm looking at it wrongly)
And along with this,a proof of my phone will last for 2 days on moderate use with this tweaks(it is not yet 2 days, but not even 50% used for almost one full day)
@op wonderful and simple guide to improving stock without changing Rom. I would love to see experienced members expand on this so as we could also have some simple add-ons (eg, I always flash Doomlords battery charge icon zip on stock roms)
Also would be excellent to have a basic improved build.prop and a handful of basic initd scripts.

fair question Greg,
The point is perhaps that some users would like to stay with stock and just tinker with tweaks. If people wish to flash a custom ROM that is fine, but as the OP suggests this is to "clean-up" a stock ROM.
Also, copying tweaks from a ROM does not mean they will work, often tweaks are built between a number of files (install recovery.sh/build.prop/innitD) and newer users are not sure on how to create scripts that will work/execute properly. **
My suggestion is that experienced users suggest which scripts to use (supercharger/loopysmoothness/etc) and how to apply then so that they run correctly (lines needed to be added to build, permissions on script/file/whatever!)
** I certainly struggle with the amount of information out there!

I agree, but where do you draw the line. Someone will be happy with complete stock. SOmeone else will say that stock with fps uncap is perfect for them, others will want to implememt OC/UC/UV as well to make it perfect for them, others will want to use link2sd, so will need the tweak for that, others will want....always others will want....
as soon as you start to tweak you are personalising. The great thing about android is you can personalise...in order to personalise you need to read up in aforum (Like this one) to see what is avaialble...but ineviatabley, someone will put all those tweaks into a rom...its far easier for noobs to flash a custom rom than to try and implement twaeks themselves, especially when a lot of tweaks mess with framework and systemui, so themes get messed with....
My best advice is to use custom roms, find what you like, then if there is anything you dont like, learn how to get rid, or if there is something you want extra, kindly ask the dev, or learn how to do it yourself.
I am a great believer in people learning for themselves...otherwise you might as well have an iphone....

I love this post (i found this posted by some xda member) NOW that's showing CLASS n RESPECT
There are many aspects to making a ROM; I don't think it's ever been required that one be a super-awesome code-hacker magician to have the right to release one
A ROM is more than just technical merit, there is also a good dose of artistic/cohesive vision, the ability to put all of these components together in the perfect way that makes the entire package amazing. This could be that, so let's not take a dump on it without even trying it, okay?

THis is pure CM10, built from source. It has one modification, and that is forced tablet UI. You will be in tablet mode no matter what dpi you set in build.prop.
It needs audio policy fix for hdmi audio, and probably some trimming. This is for Nobe to do his SMOOTH thing or Black Jelly thing, it is not to be considered "ready to roll" as much as it is for crack flashers or people who want a blank canvas. This is just pure CyanogenMod10 goodness.
I will answer questions and try to help but please dont expect it to be polished and shiny. It is however nice and fast and capable.
Work calls and I have to go out of town for the rest of the week, so I will not have access to my build machine, but I wanted to get this out for nobe before I left.
Please use install instructions from one of Nobe's roms, or of course you can use teamdrh's 350meg setup as well.
I will probably need a mirror if someone could because I procrastinate and havent set up an account at dev-host yet.
Enjoy.........

so the spec read out from the Gtab is that the 2D, 3D, Database IO, Sd card Write and Read are all faster than my TF201 running HB and on performance mode clocked at 1400 MHZ. I just have one question, does this little guy run choppy when switching apps? That is the reason I am avoiding JB on my Gtab for my wife. She complains that it would take forever when switching between apps. I have also noticed that when opening an app on JB it would take it forever to load. I was just wondering if you are seeing overall improvement on the system.

We run out of RAM on big games, everything else FEELS better than tf101, acer a500, in my experience. Nobe has two different roms, and I have paranoidandroid and this one. Out of the four, you are bound to find one that you like. No stock camera is the other negative though.

I saw paranoidandroid get dropped the other day, but haven't gotten around to flashing it since my wife is busy with her tablet (She doesn't like me taking it away and testing roms on it very often) but I did test both of Nobes and they felt sluggish and choppy. From basic tasks like changing screens opening the app tray checking the play store and checking Facebook... to anything else. I love Jelly bean on my phone and tablet, and I even put Jelly bean on my wife's phone and she loves it. The problem is it hasn't played well with the g-tab yet. I will keep watching though to see what results come of this in the future.
Thank you
Wow... you are a monster!
The gTablet is alive ...again!!!!!!!!!
I got really close to selling mine the other day, now I'm glad I did not. I've had it since November of 2010!
Does this require 350MB or 300MB system partition?
Thank you
Now granted guys that screenshot was done with the modified adjustments that I put in it. Once I see that Google play plays nice with it. I will shoot a upload link to the OP so he can test it and apply it to the post.

Just for the sake of argument, run this with 350 if you plan on gaming or multi tasking. Both work well I just have been testing with 350 and seam to be turi g out well.

As long as it is the Dirty Bean setup. If you are planning on adding gapps then you must have a 350m system for everything to work right.
Sent from The Darkside via Me...
with the smooth version are you going to keep the original AOSP look and feel?
Yes, 350MB on /system is a must: after flashing ROM and gapps-20121011 over 300MB, there was only about 60kb left in system partition, not enough to even update host file.
The interesting thing was, it was running really, REALLY fast and smooth! No lag whatsoever. The extra available RAM made a HUGE difference.
I'm going to try to "trim" some stuff from the ROM (like CMWallpapers.apk is 8MB, VideoEditor.apk and LiveWallpapers stuff), and gapps (Thinkfree is almost 8MB) and then flash again; we'll see if it will flash on 300MB and run stable.
The more available RAM the better!

One thing I did notice: when you insert MicroSD card, the system will unmount the internal sdcard....

Notice: The OP has been updated on 2/05/2014. It is updated to reflect the 4.3 platform and has been streamlined with more XPosed modules. The older 4.1.2 post has now been deleted. The OP serves as a representation of our current ongoing discussion of kernels, mods/tweaks and tips on the i9300. It is merely a summary for newcomers to integrate to our discussion.
Most of the forum regulars are very advanced users who know the ins and outs of our phone and how to maximize its performance. I just wanted to share with you some of the most useful mods I've encountered during my brief time on this forum. In my opinion, these mods are not given enough credit for what they can do. Perhaps, some users are not aware of them. Hence, my decision to open a thread to discuss these mods. Feel free to add some of your hidden gems (not the obvious ones).
Kernel
Boeffla Kernel for 4.3
Our go to kernel since 4.1.2. It's not the most feature rich, but it is the most stable and is updated regularly. It includes multiple governors, Boeffla Sound, ZRam and Low Memory Settings. Check it out and gain substantial battery savings over the stock kernel.
Boeffla Kernel
XPosed
II. Xposed Framework
Custom roms for Android have come a long way and Xposed is the next step in customization. It allows users to install modules to customize just about every aspect of your phone. It really minimizes the need for custom roms since it can do everything you need.
Xposed Installer
XPosed Modules
I. App Settings - My favorite app to control the DPI of each individual app. I like setting my phone to around 260-280 so I only set my launcher to that setting while retaining the 320 dpi of the phone itself. Then I customize each app DPI separately.
App Settings
II. AppOpsExposed - Access the secret Android menu to control user information accessed by apps.
AppOpsXposed
III. BootManager - Control which apps are allowed to start up. Some apps simply don't need to start unnecessarily. (ie. Maps, Starbucks, Yelp)
BootManager
IV.Greenify - Sort of like freezing using Titanium Backup, this app finds useless apps that are running in the background and forces hibernation. This will help enable our phones to properly enter deep sleep for better battery life.
Greenify
V. NotifyClean - Control which notifications are allowed to post notifications on the status bar.
NotifyClean
VI. WanamXposed - This is a must for Xposed users. It allows for so much customization. If you own a 4.3 Samsung phone, you absolutely need this.
WanamXposed
VII. XButtonActions - This module will allows users to program their physical keys for certain actions. Remember the long press menu to kill mod? This can do that for you.
XButtonActions
VIII. Disable Clear Defaults Dialog - After setting a default app on TouchWiz this annoying dialog pops up. Disable it with this module.
Disable Clear Defaults Dialog
IX. Free Music Subscription - A certain music subscription app who's name starts with an S (It also rhymes with "modify") has released a free version for tablet users. This module fakes the app into thinking you're using a tablet. I tried it and it works perfectly. Saved $10 a month with this mod. Please don't mention the music app by name here.
Enable Free Music Subscription
Apps
I. Lux
This app essentially controls the backlight automatically for you according to the lighting conditions around you. Handy for saving battery and saving your eyes when you're in bed with the lights off.
Lux
II. Cerberus
Locate your phone when you lose it. Also lets you take a picture, record sound, get call logs, read SMS and so much more. Every Android user needs this.
Cerberus
III. Google Maps 6.14.4
Ever since the new Google Maps was updated, it lost many of it's core features such as offline maps. This is the old APK and resigned so it will never be updated by the PlayStore.
Google Maps 6.14.4
IV. Flash Player on KitKat
Google is trying to phase out Adobe Flash starting with KitKat. This mod will allow it to run those devices. Try installing this with Lucky Patcher found below and watch flash video not allowed on mobile devices. (ie. Hulu, PornHub and ESPN) Be sure to set your browser to desktop mode and disable any ad blockers to watch porn or Hulu.
Flash on KitKat
Lucky Patcher
V. YouTube in HD
This won't speed up your phone but it's worth mentioning. It's does exactly what it says. Watch YouTube in HD.
YouTube in HD
Cosmetic Mods
I. S4 KitKat Statusbar
Gives you the white statusbar found on KitKat. This WiFi icon looks really nice.
S4 KitKat Statusbar
II. DCikonZ Icons
I've become so sick of the S3 icons after looking at them for over a year. Here's an icon pack that's compatible with any third party launcher like Nova, Apex, etc. Icons for XDA, FM Radio, Kindle and YouTube are fantastic.
DCikonZ
III. 4G Icon
Simple mod that turns your H+ icon into a more dynamic 4G icon. I can't remember who made this. Works on both 4.3 and 4.1.2.
4G
IV. Nova Launcher
Most advanced users know and use this launcher but it's worth pointing out that it allows for transparent status bars. Also, enable the shadowing on the status bar and it looks fantastic.

V. Google SE Boot Animation and Sounds
This is a very well-known mod that enables the Google SE boot animation instead of the boring Samsung logo. You can enable custom boot animations from here. After enabling, insert bootanimation.zip into data/local or system/media and give permission -rw -r -r. Please note that the bootanimation is not a flashable file. You can also flash the Google SE sounds which will overwrite your Samsung sounds.

Re: Awesome Underrated Mods/Tweaks
After trying Crossbreeder, my phone is really snappy. Especially with any app that uses the internet. Also, it cuts down so many background operations. This would pair up really well with Perseus. I see almost no CPU movement when idle now. This will A LOT of battery drainage.
Test CPU usage with CPU Adjuster and you'll notice the difference.

A lot of apps and mods that say they reduce lag are either very situational they work on some setups but not others, or its its the placebo effect.

Please try it and let me know what you guys think.
Anybody out there willing to test these settings with me? I'd love some input and suggestions to advance the CPU configurations in Perseus.

Hey slappy, I was wondering what you mean by using greenify intelligently...? I was under the impression I should just hit apps that I don't use often that run in the background (maps for instance) is there a better approach?

- Max CPU frequency "Set it as 710 MHz
- Set on boot!
Restores CPU settings on boot :good:

Warning: So after you've downloaded these, make sure you have Holo Launcher folder with the Backups!
Replace those with UltraBeam GB files
I've been using V0.4 for some days, it's really good.
Stable and fast. No bugs found,
I have rarely a bit of lag with incoming calls, the screen seems to freeze for a while but I solved
enablng "answer with trackball". I just stopped the slide to answer at all.
Tapping the trackball is faster and the phone reacts immediately.
Waiting to try V5, to see if you really will be able to do even better!
Thanks
You already have a thread in the general section why not just use that as a main/Q&A/Non-dev/"Fans" thread. Not wanting to provoke you but I don't see many more fans appearing as wildfire is barely active and will most likely be in the "low end device" category soon
Instead of having a fans thread why not just add a "Hit thanks or donate to me if you like my work and want to see more" at the top of your thread instead of promoting Off-topic and general discussion which is bound to end in someone Losing their cool or raging/trolls and the thread being locked and infractions being handed out by mods

I have flashed V5 as soon as you uploaded it.
It rocks!
I think that Holo Launcher is the best choiìce.
Thanks to Titanium Backup I managed to import all my apps, data and settings with no hassle.
I had to fight a little bit when flashing because I messed up my MTD Partitions settings (I want to spill every single bit of free memory).
When I started from scratch flashing clean CWM 4014, MTD Recovery, Ultrabeam, Gapps and MTD Boot everything went fine.
Thanks a lot for your work.

I might change to aosp soon but don't know yet which one

No, I use the sense version. It has some bugs but for me it is acceptable (you wont find a perfect asop).
I just had one bug where I needed to take out battery (I could not unlock the screen although phone was still alive).
I installed this with the flashtool. It seems okay, and the interface (bog-standard Android?) is more familiar (to me at least) than the Miui interface.
Problems so far:
* seems not to support 5G WiFi (the Xiaomi ROMs support 5G WiFi) [Edit: miraculously, 5G WiFi is now working! ]
* battery percentage not shown
* can't see the patterns that you are drawing, if you are trying to protect the lock screen with a pattern
* my antivirus program doesn't like any of the themes apks that the Theme Manager is downloading (perhaps these are false positives - but I happen to trust my antivirus program)

What kind of screen on time are you getting? On the AOSP ROMs I struggle to hit 2 hours and day of use so i went back to MIUI.

With deactivated touch boost I get almost 2 Days of moderate usage, SOT is 4-5h.
2 hours is not normal id say..

Yes, pattern unlock is a bit tricky, you need to draw an invisible pattern before Smart Lock becomes available. Then there is an option to make the pattern visible. Maybe proceed with caution

Here are excerpts from comments I posted about the rom in another forum:
"A couple of days ago, I noticed the new Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 Cinafoniaci AOSP Rom on Needrom. It took my interest because the creator, Simone Quarrera is also the developer of Space MTK Tool [project to update MTK Droid Tools for 64 bit devices].
I have been using the rom for a day plus & so far it is excellent. I am most impressed that the latest version of Xposed Installer ran immediately without issue. Last week, I tried AOSP Rom V3 by MD Steam, but Xposed wouldn't work, so I quickly abandoned it. I was resigned to staying with Miui & waiting for WSM Tools [Xposed alternative] to be updated to Miui 7. But now, I am happy to be back in familiar aosp territory. I like some things about Miui, e.g. beautiful themes and the stock apps, camera, compass & browser [smooth flash player]. I have made a custom backup of my last miui rom, so can go back & compare some time.
On first boot, the rom gives the option of retaining apps & settings from the previously installed rom. I didn't choose this option, preferring Titanium Backup to set up. Here are some features of the rom:
Material TWRP 2.8.7
Mobile Space Tool – includes Xposed, SuperSU, ADBD Insecure, Eng. Mode, Cpu Freq, Viper4 Android FX, Custom Themes
Stock Launcher is similar to Nova/Apex but with less options & can be coupled with the rom's themes
Miravision & ClearMotion
OTA updates – work in progress, I think
Notification leds working, but are not included in System Settings. A third party app is necessary. I am using Light Manager.
Battery life seems similar to Miui 7. Here is a screenshot of screen on time with battery at 57%:"

Thanks. But IMHO, that is a bug.

I think the developer will appreciate any feedback on bugs. Probably, the best place for this is Needrom [unless you're able to post in the Italian forum].
By the way, I don't use a screen lock, so pattern unlock is not an issue for me....
I am really happy with this rom & will likely stay with it. When I have time, I will under clock to see if battery life is extended. On miui 7 v. 5.11.1, I under clocked to 1.625 Ghz as the phone felt hot in the hand [I live in a hot climate]. I was surprised to see that on screen time life extended way beyond 6 hours [note: not 'normal' conditions, i.e. at home, wifi on, mobile data/gps/bluetooth disabled; ds battery saver to limit wake locks ]. Under clocked, the PC Mark Battery Life Test result was 6 hours 56 minutes [average for RN2 is 6 hours 4 minutes]. For me, under clocking didn't affect performance on the miui rom. Edit: Under clocked to 1.625 ghz → some lag in task switching/opening apps, no improvement in battery life.
@kusala thank you so much for your review
I was thinking about trying aosp too, mainly because of xposed and because some things of miui need to be improved yet in my opinion
However I need to decide between this and delirium proyect, maybe I'll try both. Did you try that one?
On the other hand, just for curious why are you so xposed dependant? Which modules do you need more?
And...anyone has a reliable zip for recovery of cinafoniaci?
Thanks

I haven't tried Delirium. The reason I flashed the Cinafoniaci rom is because I have seen other work by the developer & have confidence in his ability. If you contact Simone via Needrom with a request for a custom zipped rom, he may be able to help. I made a custom backup of my last miui rom, so wasn't concerned about using sp flash tool.
Re xposed, I currently have 13 modules installed. The ones most useful are Gravity Box [so many options], RecentApp Clear [improves recent apps in the Cina rom], Fix Lollipop Memory Leak, YouTube AdaAway & Xposed Torch [vol up activates torch when screen off].

I'm having a hard time to choose between Sense7 or Hybrid.. Have you tried both ROMs? IF so, which did you like most?
