My phone took a swim in some water unfortunately. Everything about the phone works except for one crucial part. The power button is completely unresponsive. It half worked for a short while but now its completely useless. I had to download an app to turn off the screen instead of waiting for it to time out. I also had to download an app to reboot the phone since its good to do every so often. I'm trying to avoid paying the $100 water damage deductable to get it replaced. Problem is if my phone ever has the battery drained I won't be able to turn it back on. I highly doubt it but is there any other way of turning on the phone without the power button working? Or is it just FUBAR???

If you can get into download mode and odin back to stock and pull the plug half way thru and take it back to sprint and say it won't turn on because of some update and play stupid they'll replace the phone because its a software issue ie error on their part therefore must replace it. Also I've heard odin3 has the ability to control hardware controls never used it myself

I'll get Odin3 and see if that will work. Now if it does, is it impossible to upgrade and install a custom kernel and/or rom now? I'm still on Froyo running genocide kernel and SFR 1.2 rom.
Obviously I can't do anything using the power button.
I had to give in and just pay the deductable. Not having a working power button is just too much of a hassle especially when dealing with rooting and flashing kernals/roms/etc. Thanks for all the help everyone, I appreciate it.
You can manually control/power on ur phone using the ADB method. You'll just have to download and set up the Android SDK

So I've been running Bonsai 2.0 for a bit, but just today it started where if i power down, it will only power into download mode. I odin'd back to stock and the problem still persists. To be more clear, when i power up normally, just using the power button, it goes into download. Any ideas?

Well as I sit typing this from the phone the one isn't constantly hitting. And I can type the number 1 no problemand even sliding closed doesn't hit the keyboard one. I'm gonna go to sprint n give hell because this is a brand new replacement from insurion and its bs that I'm having this problem after only a week. I know they don't support sammys warnty but there should be at least a 30 day or something

I thought the same thing, but perhaps, when the op odins, the phone will boot normally that one time because the power button isn't being used. Odin does reboot the phone if you have the reboot box checked.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Hit the nail on the head. When I odin it boots up fine. But if I try to power reboot or anything, right back into download.

Sounds annoying... Assurion takes replacement phones back up to 30 days after receipt, unless there is evidence of physical/water damage. In which case, you would have to fork over an extra 100 bucks. Remember, they will only send 3 claim replacement phones and then they cancel your insurance.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Did you figure out the problem?
Sounds like it should be covered under Manufacturer's Warranty or Sprint Repair if you have TEP. I think this would be a defect, not accidental damage. Asurion shouldn't come into play.
So I went into the sprint repair center, the guys had no clue what the hell the download screen was. So obviously they had no clue why it was only booting into it. They're replacing it. Still stumped as to what happened.
Wow. That's a crappy service center if they didn't know what download mode is.

Any ideas??
Try sticking a needle in the hole under the camera with the back off. Don't know for sure but its worth a shot I read it might be diferent on some phones. Its like a hardware reset button it might bring download mode back

If it is worn it is worn. Try the small piece of thin cardboard like from a matchbook cover and put it between the battery and cover dead center and snap it closed. Should keep it there. You could try with tweezers to pull the contacts out a little but don't recommend messing with those.
Whatever you do don't use glue. You might be tempted but don't. You never know when you need to do a battery pull....

Mine did this. Confirmed it was a loose battery. Placed some folded paper between the battery and the bottom of the phone (not the end with the battery contacts) in the battery well. Never again had the problem.

I have had this problem on my Touch Pro, Touch Pro 2 and my Epic. Every time it has turned out to be fixed easily by cleaning the battery connections with a pencil eraser. After time, the batteries gain a film of corrosion. This my or not be the problem that has plagued your phone but, it is worth considering for anyone else who runs into this symptom.

Free Epic and I have to give mine back and then eventually, they'll probably fix mine and then give that to people.
Just now. I was on xda app and suddenly the screen started having a titty attack (its happened numerous times before on froyo)
i wasnt worried cuz i figured my processor was just being overworked so i downclocked it to 400mhz.
Usually this happens in miren or dolphin. Then it clicked. It MUST BE ALL THE ENERGY BEING USED TO RENDER THE WHITE! cuz i always use my [phone at or near max brightness....
the thing was, i lowered the brightness and it stopped, but then it just shut off....i had to unplug it and plug it back in for the charger to even start charging it again.
So my question...is the screen dying (which means it has been for a while.) or is the processor dying (which means it has been for a while lol)
just wonderin are you using a stock battery or a cheapy from ebay? i had this happen too, and it turned out to be neither the screen or the core. it was only happening when i was using my aftermarket chinese battery.
im using stock battery
maybe its not getting enough juice anymore? i do plug my phone into things alot...lol

I had a screen crap out on me. I had similar symptoms leading up to it. The next thing that happened was the touchscreen became unresponsive unless keyboard was open. Then it stopped altogether. Thank goodness for my insurance because it did die. When I took it to a Repair store they had to open a new one to replace it because it is not a common issue.

Device : Nexus 7
Running : Android 4.1.2 Rooted
Problem : I was trying to unroot it and flash a 4.2.2 ROM to the device and i ended up bricking it somehow. I looked around a lot on here and youtube. I found one solution i had not tried which was to get into recovery mod. But the device was stuck on the boot loaded. So i hard shut it down, and pressed the key combination to load the boot loader. And, the screen wasn't loading. I heard the little chimes my computer makes when ever a USB device is active, so i heard the thing load into the boot loader. But its not showing on the screen!
Please help i really shouldn't have done this. But i am literally about to cry.
I tried using Wugfresh's Nexus toolkit to flash the ROM, and it would stop on sending system.
I dont know if i did something wrong, if the kernel was messed up, if the kit wasnt right, please as the video said there is 4 million members here. someone has to know what to do...

Just a noob guess, Is it possible the device isnt even using the display? Like its so messed up that its per say not even realizing it has a screen?
Try volume down and power. It is possible that the screens flex cable came loose. Pop the back off and check. You should be getting some visual queue. If all else fails hold the power button for awhile. Like around 15 to 20 seconds. I have had to do that a few times. That should fix it.

Have you dropped the device at all or sat on it? If you are getting no visual queues, either you have a loos flex cable, or the lcd is cracked or just non functional all together. The best way to check that is to shine a flashlight at an angle into your screen. Look for any odd lines that have a slight or significant curve to them.

Assuming i found the right cable which was under a copper shielding that was running up from the metal frame under the battery. It was yellow.
It was tucked all the way in.
I didnt see any cracks or lines. I did sit on my pillow was under it.
That could possibly break the device. I just recently broke mine the other day in similar circumstances. The cable is right by the battery on the right. Should be almost centered by the batt.

You technically could send it back... They can't confirm it is rooted unless you unlock the bootloader and the little lock thing shows up on the splash screen. And since your screen doesn't work, they can't see it unless they test the device after replacing the screen assuming they don't replace the whole unit. But I don't know their procedures. Most companies just replace the whole thing. The screen shouldn't just go out. Not saying it doesn't happen, but it shouldn't.

Well good luck. Never thought one could fully brick a Nexus 7. From my understanding, it is damn near impossible. Tell them that you were updating to 4.2.2 and it won't boot up at all now. That should avoid them replacing the screen and checking everything ultimately getting you a whole new device. I know you said it's not the battery, but try charging it overnight and the try to boot it up. I have seen so many people think they bricked, but discovered later on down the line 'up to 6 months later' that their battery was just dead.
