I have Setcpu for it's widget, but it always displays the CPU temp at 32 degrees Fahrenheit, no matter how hard I run it. Does the Nook even have a CPU thermometer?

Couple of choices: Temp+CPU Pro
and
TempMonitor
Never felt the need to monitor processor temperature myself but heck. Take a look.

Temp monitor tells you the battery temp, not the CPU temp.....unless a modded Droid 1....
Yea I kinda thought there wasn't a CPU temp reader

what app are you guys using to monitor CPU temps when overclocking? I saw SetCPU shows battery temp but not CPU temp.
I downloaded Tempmonitor, but when i select to show CPU temp it tells me i need a new kernel
the app says that only hacked D1's can show CPU temp...
you could search for "CPU Temperature Widget"
and you'll find my small widget which displays the cpu temp.
works on d2, so it should also work on dx ;P

installed it, however I'm wondering if it's any use. The only sensor option it gives me to use is the AK8973 sensor. Isn't that just the ambient temp sensor, and not the actual CPU sensor?
well, I'm from what I've read it is the temperature of the chip (AK8973),
BUT it seems to be close enough to the cpu to actually get the cpu temp.
I've ran the widget on a friends droid, and it showed the same temperature as setCpu, so it might not be 100% cpu temp, but you probably won't get any closer without a custom kernel :/
(and I didn't actually know that when I wrote and named the app (or posted it here))
Alright well it should work then. Im using that plus the battery temp to get an idea of hot things are.
Does anyone know about what temps are safe for the cpu and battery in the x?

just wanted to let everyone know this, as there are still plenty of threads out there that suggest setcpu, and it's a waste of time
Thanks dan, where you been stranger?

so what does it mean? it's doing what setcpu does? what about battery and temperature profiles? what if i want to force the cpu to use a lower clock speed to conserve battery?
I never understood SetCPU myself. The CPU is only used when required, so creating all these settings likely does nothing.
I'd consider it for overclocking, if that was possible.
I was also informed that our phones should do this anyway but I was suspicious of how well it does, being on 1.6 and butchered by SE after all.. it made a good deal of difference before the update.
Trying it without the update now and we'll see how it goes. Completely removed it and power cycled. Will bump in a few days with my results.
I found android got extremely laggy on 1.6 with setcpu. and I use a temp/cpu widget to keep tabs on stock behavior, my cpu sits at 245 most of the time, except when I'm using the phone

What widget do you use?
I took a quick look on the Market and AppBrain, and couldn't find anything to track/plot CPU clock to see what the phone's doing while in standby.
I do use SystemPanel, but it doesn't plot CPU clock over time, only usage.
Try advanced task manager it shows cpu speed...

I'm not looking for a way to see the speed. SystemPanel will do that. I'm looking for a plot that shows the cpu speed over time, so I can see how and when it changes.

Try Usage Timelines Free or seepu++ (not free and dev seems to have abandoned it)
Edit: sorry I see you want clock speed not usage. I have yet to find an app for that as well.

so what is SetCPU doing then? draining the battery? or is it affecting the charging process?
and what about the app CoolS? its almost the same thing as SetCPU but the only thing you can do is slow the CPU down
You can use SetCPU to:
1. Overclock (but not on X10)
2. Underclock (you know you go somewhere for 2 days and forgot the charger at home)
3. Make profiles to lower CPU freq when temp is too high
For day by day use, i'm ok with android's ondemand scaling.
use android hackers apk. thereu can see theCPU over time...

i use setcpu to underclock my X10 to 5xx mhz when the screen is off.
my batt usage is better, from 3-5% per hour to below 2%.
I've been using overclock widget to keep it to 998mhz to see if it would make a difference in quadrant. Recently i uninstalled it and i still get about the same benchmark score.

I ask because I used SetCPU to overclock in CM7 to 787 (806 locks my phone up), and I want to be sure the temp stays okay.

i'm not sure about an actual temperature range, but i would say anything that doesn't burn your hand when you hold it is acceptable. what build of cm7 are you using? i've been running set cpu set at 806 with nightly builds from a week ago up to today (13-19) with no issues.
Running build 18. 806 has always locked my phone up, even on CM6

But afaik, the temp the phone gives you is the battery temp, not the cpu temp, so it could be much higher than the reported number...
Anyway, 42° is moreless the line temp for me.

Huh. Didn't know that. Thanks for the info.
My battery got to around 46C while charging.

Well, if it's just charging you can create a setcpu profile that it lowers the mhz when doing so, so it doesnt heat up too much. At any rate, supposedly every good device should work fine under 50°C, if it's charging without overclock and you still get 46° then it should be safe.
If you can't measure it, you can't manage it. Try loading the "Perfect System Monitor" app from the Market. It will give you CPU temp data. I wouldn't worry about anything under ~50* C.
Anyone else Trying CPU Tuner?

OMG!!! I can't believe the difference it has made!!!!
What difference has it made? Does it let u overclock or what?

From what I understanb, the A500 and other mobile devices are under-clocked at the factory to save on battery. The allows you to adjust the CPU up to 1Ghz. So, not really overclocking, but you will see a big difference.
So you have already done it?

just so you know this app is not needed for our CPU to run at the full 1ghz. the CPU runs full speed when the system demands it by default. this app is more for setting profiles to extend battery life. if you use system panel or a similar app you will see that the CPU runs full speed when needed. CPU tuner seems to be a great app for extending battery life though, so thanks for the tip.

Wrong. None of the devices are "under clocked" at the factory. There is just no reason that your device needs to run at 100% speed 24/7, so the CPU and the OS scale the speed back if the device is idle. Just like a laptop or desktop PC.
so if honeycomb automatically scales back the CPU when its not need does that mean that this kind of app is really needed to save battery?
Sorry, I must have miss-read something some place and was understanding it incorrectly. All I know, is thing are running faster.
Thank you das7771 and geeknik for the info!
No apology needed. We are all here for help, info, reseach, and hacking. I learn something new every day myself.

Depending on your preference. One thing this app will do is scale down your frequency according to the profile you select ,for example, if your battery is at 50% and you want it to last longer, than what it would at stock settings, you can create a profile for your CPU to run at a lower speed like 800mhz. That way your battery will last longer throughout the day if you can not charge it. You can set multiple profiles for different battery levels of your preference and have the cpu run at slower speeds to preserve battery. So if your anal about your battery state then it can be very useful. Becuase at stock settings the sytem will run at whatever the speed is demanded by the system. Whether it be the minimum or maximum processor speed.
I usually prefer performance over battery life myself so unless I am going on a long road trip or I am out camping I would not use it as I have no need, but every one is different.
in what level of temperature xperia x8 counted as normal?my xperia x8 mostly at 30-34C. is it too high?
your body is 37°C, if you put the phone in your pocket is normal
Mine atm is 21C with oveclocked cpu @748Mhz. If I play games temperature goes up to 35.
but even i now in air cond room..still 32C..what to do?
I think it just well unless than 40c
mine is aproximately 25
Running on MiniCM RC2. normal at 33 but when I Play games it goes up to 36 - 40
The mine its normal...
Sorry for my English
thats not too high.dont worry
use cm7 nightly temp increase 3-5 celcius, but when i use floyo its stayed under 35..
Most of popular µCs may be heated up to 90°C (and even more). Assuming that the CPU of X8 isn't so much heat-resistant there's still a huge overheat margin. So don't worry =)
My OC to 710 Xperia is running around 33°C, but if you're playing alot the temperature may drastically raise.
