Replacement phone options - EVO 4G General

I was offered two phone choices nexus s and epic touch for my EVO as the phone is having hardware issues with the 4g connection . Replacement choices where offered by sprint tech support .
Any thoughts on the phones choices, don't need keyboard that leaves me with nexus

I take it they offered you the Epic 4g, and not the Epic 4g Touch? If it was the original Epic they offered I would go with the Nexus S. I really have nothing to back that as I haven't handled either phone, I have just heard some bad things about the Epic.

Did tech say you would have to take it to a store to swap out or that they would mail you one. Reason I ask is the wife is having problems with her epic 4G (random reboots and freezing screen to name a few) and they told me that i have to go to a store to swap out that they don't mail replacments out anymore.
now the voices are customized in 3d

no they can do mail replacement if you ask .
I already bought so many accessories for evo extended batteries, car mount I guess time to get rid of them. Yeah old epic touch was offered

Hey,
If you are going to go that route get the nexus, but it really isnt fair they are trying to gip you out into a cheaper phone. They tried to do the same for me...
Either call tech support or complain to them in your sprint store and they will give you another evo! Worked for me at least!
If not just see if they will cut you a deal to upgrade and get a newer evo!
Goodluck!
Stevo

Are you sure it was the Epic Touch? Highly doubt that. The Epic Touch doesn't have a keyboard, but the original Epic does.
If indeed it was the Epic Touch, get it. If it was the original Epic, get the Nexus S. Far better, pure Google, not plagued by the problems of the Epic, guaranteed updates, newer, better development.....

I'm guessing that each time you say Epic Touch, you mean the Epic 4G (Galaxy S).
The Epic 4G Touch (Galaxy SII) uses the word TOUCH to indicate that it has no keyboard (touchscreen only)
If this is the case, the Nexus would be the way to go, which is nice since ICS update should be coming in a few weeks.
I'm surprised they didn't give an option to upgrade to the EVO 3d.
If they offer the Epic 4G Touch (Galaxy SII), then it's probably the best choice.

Sprint removes Epic from top of list

Sprint used to stick the EVO and Epic up top above even their cheap phones when you looked at the phones for sale on their website.
Now the Epic is near the bottom with the expensive phones. The EVO Shift has taken its place, but the EVO is still at the top.
If there were any lingering doubts as to how Sprint felt about the Epic vs. other phones in their lineup, that should be gone now.
Not sure why they moved it down, especially since they dropped it down to 199.99 from 249.99 (after rebates of course). You would think they would want to showcase the price drop.
yep I saw that too , not sure though if were looking too much into it. I try not to worry about things like that.
It's been clear from the start that the epic is a throw away product to sprint. I've owned an epic since a few days after launch and I've only ever seen one single ad for it. One. Meanwhile there are evo commercials still running in prime time.

I think Sprint either has some sort of deal with HTC or they just don't like Samsung. It was the same way with the Hero vs. the Moment. The Hero was darling and the Moment was an afterthought.
Out here in Los Angeles they have a lot of ads for the epic. They were made by samsung and talked about the multi media ability of the epic and had a big epic movie theme.

Do you remember the ORIGINAL galaxy s pro specs?
4" SAMOLED
1ghz hummingbird
16GB internal memory
1GB RAM
Hdmi-out
Now what would've happened if sprint released that phone right after blowin so much cash to market the EVO's "massive [8GB] memory, fast [sub-par] processor, and "gorgeous" [lol] screen?
Also, the evo's hdmi out was a big selling point because it was the only one with it.
Everyone would've definitey picked epic over evo when the specs were listed side by side, but sprint would've lost a lot of marketing money so they gimped it

I def feel Sprint keeps the Epic on behind the Evo in terms of marketing. Not so much with their other phones because the other phones market to a different segment. I'm in the philly burbs and I can't recall a single Epic TV ad but there are tons of Evo ads on TV and internet. And when the Epic got it's push on Sprint's website, it was always featured in concert with the Evo. Never on it's own (save for the super lame ad they had over the summer that displayed features that any smart phone can do)

It's not completely Sprint's fault [regarding the **** in the site]. They are controled by market push and they have to respond to what there providers give them, and what they agree to sell.
In this case, the Epic / Evo phones have been around for 6+ Months, and new inventory has rolled in, they have the presure of the phone providers to make space for (NEW) stock.
And if anyone ask, though I'm a communications SFC right now in the Army, I worked with Orange [France Telecom], Vodafone and Duch Telecom for many years, and I know how the game is played internally when it comes to hype new product and decomm phones that have been in the market for X amount of time. Its a shift of power and money driven by the market and phone manufactures.
ok the epic is back where it suppose to be....that better
I've seen dozens of ads for the epic. Keep in mind this is on Hulu but still they pushed hard when it launched.
And what is Sprint going to sell besides the EVO or Epic? Nothing else comes close to either model for Sprint.

One reason would be because the Evo is Sprint's biggest selling phone. It's still on backorder in a lot of places. I've been waiting over a month for my replacement to come in. Had to wait 7 weeks when I broke the screen on my first one. Where as I walked right into the Sprint store & picked up 2 Epics same day with no problem & had one replaced with only a 3 day wait. The Epic isn't as popular a phone as some of you may think it should be. Fact of the matter is, even though the Evo is 6 months old it is still in high demand & seen with high regard as the the only really legitimate iPhone contender in Sprint's lineup. They are hoping to continue that trend by cashing in on the Evo name brand by moving the Evo Shift to the top of the list. The Epic while a good phone & marginally better specs doesn't carry that same appeal with consumers. Add that into Samsung's refusal to come out with timely updates and the Epic lands itself at the bottom. By the time the Epic finally gets Froyo, if ever, HTC will be rolling out Gingerbread to the Evo & Shift and/or be ready to drop their next big Android flagship. Samsung should stick to HDTV's IMO. They have shown that they don't fully get the smartphone community.

As much as I'm an "Epic Fanboi" and really don't like the Evo, I really hate to admit it, but I believe you're right... (Except for the "marginally better specs" part)... The Evo was the first flagship device and Sprint's riding that train to the bank. They're now even showing commercials:
"here's something nice that was said about the Evo... and Here's the next Evo.. the Evo Shift" garbage.. they're capitalizing on the "Evo" name like Verizon did/does on the "droid" moniker.
And us Epic lovers are left in the dust. :/

I completely agree
It's all about marketing. I don't think it has anything to do with like or dislike. The evo shift is the newest smartphone out so of course they are going to push and advertise it. They want the public to know about their new product so they can sell it. I'm no marketing expert but that makes sense to me why they are advertising it a lot.

True to a point but why not advertise the Epic? I've seen one commercial in slight rotation about the Epic since its release. It's been almost 6 months now. This was supposed to be Samsung's flagship phone. I don't by the Sprint/HTC partnership thing either. Sprint has always sold HTC phones going back to the Apache for me. But the Samsung Instinct was it biggest selling phone before the Pré & now Evo. Even the Moment sold pretty good but just not as good as the Hero. I think Sprint is starting to learn their lesson about Samsung from all of the complaints & bad press they got over the Instinct & Moment. Samsung has great hardware & ideas but constantly falls short on follow thru. Has happened with every big phone they have put out.

Evo birthday

meh -_- oh well
i wan to trade my epic for an evo... please pm about it i am in indianapolis
You posted in the wrong forum this is the samsung epic 4g forum
traded my epic for the evo again yesterday, everyone at work usually has an htc smartphone. and the dev community has so many custom roms.... well what can i say....
The point being? Are we supposed to celebrate? Lol...
I traded my Evo for an Epic. Still pretty pleased with my decision.
I got an Evo on its first day available, but at the time I didn't know the Epic was coming. I was used to having a physical keyboard on my smartphones (Samsung Blackjack 2, ATT Fuze/Touch Pro, and ATT Tilt/Touch Pro 2). It was a drastic change to not have a keyboard, and I have more than once considered switching.
Now that I've had my Sprint contract for over a year, I can get an Epic for the same price as if I was buying it new - $149. Gazelle says that my Evo is worth $157 (it was $190 two months ago, oh well), so it would be a wash.
I have confidence in Gingerbread for the Epic coming soon (I've seen 6/20 tossed around as a date), and I know I can root it. My only ambivalence comes from the Epic being ten months old itself. On the other hand, "modern" Android phones with keyboards are uncommon (Come on Sprint, releasing the XPRT Froyo and without 4G?) and the Epic is the only one that the keyboard and design impresses me.
It appears people have gone both ways - from Epic to Evo, and from Evo to Epic. Any other comments?
Thanks, Doug

I did the same thing, EVO screen glass doesn't want to stay attached to phone...

[Q] Just bought an EVO

I have had the Epic since day 1 and within the first 3 days had to return the phone twice. Maybe another week later i had to have my third Epic replaced, mind you they were all brand new from the store not refurbished. The past week my most recent Epic has been freezing, microphone going out, texts being sent 3 days after they were meant to have been.... Well long story short i needed a new phone and ive always owned HTC's until the Epic. I have to say both phones are amazing, the Epics screen is hands down much crisper than the Evo's but the EVO's ram is slightly quicker. I would like the communities opinion on wether or not I should keep the EVO or get another Epic or keep the EVO till the 3d edition comes out which falls under my one month return policy What are the 3d's specs looking like compared to the others and is the 3d even going to be worth it? I have SPB mobile shell 3d and showd it to the manager up at sprint and he said that it is almost identical. Sorry if i ranted but im in a very happy mood right now.
Keep the Evo, run CM7 on it, and wait for the 3D.
This keep the E3D thing looks beast.
I say sell both old ass phones and get a Evo 3d or a GS2.
Thanks for the quick replies guys. im thinking im gonna to go the 3d route. it seems to be most logical deal. plus the 2 cores wont hurt . If anyone has any other information or opinions they are most welcome, thanks.
I have an Evo 4G. I've considered ditching it for an Epic, but only because I've missed the physical keyboard since I bought it (first day) and didn't know that the Epic or other physical-keyboard phones were coming. I'm running Sprint Lovers' 2.2, haven't put GB on because of bugs in it.
One note on the Evo 3g: as of now, the boot-loader is still locked. HTC says they will unlock it. No idea the timeframe.

Htc evo 4g+ coming to sprint

I just read an article that said the HTC EVO 4G+ is coming to Sprint. It's has the same specs as the 3d minus the 3d. What do you think should we wait?
I wonder how much cheaper it will be. If it were $50.00 cheaper and I qualified for an upgrade I'd consider it.

link?.....
Since this is my first post I can't post a link it was on drippler and I think it came from gsm arena
For the OP, here's the link: GSM Arena
As it happens, I don't see anything regarding a Sprint announcement.
This model of the EVO 4G+ is the South Korean variant and does not support WiMax.
Korea has some other 4G tech.
It IS an official HTC product, but this is not a Sprint phone.
The 4G+ supports what's called WiBro which is actually Wimax. I think its just a different standard, but it could probably become compatible with sprints Wimax with modified software. I'm only speculating as I am in NO WAY knowledgeable of the technology.

No kickstand! I have zero interest in the 3D technology, so if this was a bit cheaper I would certainly think about it. It just seems the hardware is a bit underwhelming when you consider what is coming out later in the year. I never understood why HTC didn't make the EVO its flagship brand and make an incredible iPhone killing EVO 2. Then again, they let Sprint destroy the stock EVO with its **** bloatware, so I guess I am expecting too much.
Rooted EVO and no bloat. With the 3d coming out and the I5 also, you can be sure an EVO 2 is on the way. HTC is also shipping with an open bootloader so you can delete the bloat. Devs will be cooking roms faster then ever. HTC and Sprint listens to what the masses are requesting. I say kuddos to HTC and Sprint, keep up the good work

looks like Korea is getting the 4g+
http://news.softpedia.com/news/HTC-Flyer-4G-and-EVO-4G-Arrive-in-South-Korea-at-KT-207938.shtml
4g+ nice!!!
I'd get the 4G+ in a heart beat to upgrade my 4G to, if the real world reviews were positive.
I'm extremely happy with my 4G and it would take a lot for me to give it up. And the 3D technology is something that is not doing it for me, even though the other technology of the 3D is stuff that would sway me. But that 3D stuff is a deal breaker along with that button and switch to operate that gimmick.
Edit:
Since the 4G+ is going to Korea, I'll wait for the next non 3D HTC device to come to Sprint.
I have a feeling I'm not alone regarding waiting.
And I have a feeling that there are many EVO 4G owners that will not be giving theirs up for the 3D.
Even though the rest of the upgrades on the Evo 3D are what 4G owners would upgrade to, the 3D camera is a turn off for most, and may just be a marketing blunder for Sprint.
To not want the 3D just because of the camera is hard to figure out, but that is called Supply & Demand, and it may be as simple as aesthetics.
In edition, I bet only a fraction of 3D's are sold as compared to the number of 4Gs that gave been sold.
And I will go as far as to say Many more 4G owners would have upgraded to the 4G+ then will to the 3D.
Time will tell.
The thing I don't understand is that I thought that Evo was Sprint's branding, not HTC's. If this is going to Korea, why is it called the Evo?
Granted, all the Evos so far have been HTC, so maybe I'm wrong about who owns the brand. But so far Evo has only been used on Sprint, and I thought it was theirs. Like how Verizon uses Droid.
I was searching on the web, and it appears HTC was getting a trademark for the 'EVO' .name, but I am not exactly sure. Plus I don't know if trademarks are International.
On another note, I would like to know the following regarding the 4G and 3D >>
- how many 4G owners are keeping their 4G and have no interest in buying the 3D?
- how many 4G owners kept their 4G but purchased the 3D?
- how many 4G owners traded in their 4G to get to get the 3D?
- how many Sprint customers never had a 4G and purchased the 3D as their first EVO?
The following questions may be better answered after 30 days >>
- how many 4G owners are glad they kept their 4G and are returning their 3D?
- how many 4G owners are so happy with the 3D that they regret not trading their 4G?
- how many 3D owners wish they kept their 4G and would return their 3D if they did?*
* when customers trade in their 4G to get the additional $150 off the 3D, what happens if they want to return the 3D within the 30 day trial period?
- how many previous 4G owners traded in their 4Gs and are glad they did?
- how many customers are not happy with their 3D, but since they traded in their 4G and cannot get it back, don't admit their dissatisfaction to others?
- how many of the above will admit their dissatisfaction to others?
I just got back from playing with the Evo 3D at a local Sprint store . Its a nice phone but I dont care for the 3D or the dual cameras . Yes Im aware that you can disable the 3D and run the phone like normal . For some reason it just pushes me away , I feel like Im buying something that has a feature on it that I will never use . Mainly due to the fact that I used the phone for maybe 5 mins and the 3D gave me a headache . Needless to say if they launch the EVO 4+ I will be in line to upgrade my EVO 4G in a heartbeat . Till then Im with the other Evo customers and sticking with my original EVO . On a side note I know when I walked in they were all over me about selling me one . Me personally I dont think the EVO 3D is selling as good as they hoped it would . If I wanted to watch something in 3D I wouldnt be doing it on a 4 inch screen I would go home and use a 50 inch flatscreen for that . Just my two cents
Sprint isn't getting it. It's going to Korea

Which phone would you choose?
The one(s) I'm really interested in is:
1. Samsung Epic 4g Touch
2. Motorola Photon 4g
3. Nexus S 4g
Just would like to get some opinions on these or whatever you all think?

Looking at the photon myself....next week is upgrade time, and not interested in any Samsung products....
And from everthing I've read the nexus radio sucks...

I've got the photon (had it for about 6 weeks) and can say that it's a great phone. Runs smooth as butter. The only issue i've had was some overheating, but that was my fault and not a hardware or OS issue.
If I had the option of switching, I would turn it down and stay with the photon.
Sent from my MB855 using XDA App
I'm leaning more toward the Photon but, the Epic is close.
The manager told me that the Photon is better suited for the network expansion Sprint is planning on.
I've had the photon and now epic touch 4g, and they are both great phones on their own respect.
The photon has better cell reception than the epic and has great call quality. The epic is ok, just not photon quality. If you do alot of multitasking and web browsing the epic is blazing fast and you won't experience no lag whatsoever. The photon is a great phone but when multitasking it became a little laggy, but not a deal breaker. As far as screen resolution, imo the epic edges out the photon. Even though the photon has better resolution the epic just looks better. I don't know how this was achieved but the super amoled+ is nice.
Build quality the photon was nice and felt good in hand. the epic is nice and I really like the slim proflle. It is a huge screen but I like it, since I have big hands its not hard to handle. Either way both phones are great and won't be disappointed with which one you decide go with.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
Epic Touch is a monster phone. I've become attached to Samsung since the original Epic 4G due to the Super Amoled screen. You just can't get enough of it.
Still haven't made up my mind on which one to get. Why does it have to be so difficult!
If you want android, it's the (possible) Nexus Prime.
But I'm lusting after the HTC Arrive. I had one for a week and I loved it.
Get the best of the best. Epic 4G Touch or the iPhone 4s.
I'm in the same boat as you.
The key differences are:
Photon has a better radio and has a gsm radio as well
Photon's built is heavier in a good way
Photon has pentile display which causes pixalated effect.
Epic has a better SoC including graphics and Cpu
ram is the same i don't know about nand though. Epic will prolly have a better dev community though but the photon has an alpha of cyanogen's out.
Nexus s is still a solid phone but if getting a pure google experience wait a month for the nexus prime announcement. (maybe the price of the current phone will drop a bit?)
Well, we didn't go with Sprint. Said they would give me 5 lines if we faxed some paperwork to them. Did that and, the manager at Sprint corporate took 5 line offer away.
Said I could only have 3 lines right now and add 2 more in a year.
Went to Verizon and got 5 lines no problem. I can tell you Verizon 4g is no joke.

you probably no longer qualified after they reviewed the paper work,i like when people leave things out but anyway, back to the topic at hand, go with the photon, i work at sprint, and messed with all 3 phones, the photon has the best radios, signal, battery life, right out the box!!! a lot of people say there's no development, but think of it this way, if the phone was perfect out of the box, why would there be development??? lol, but i digress, sprint offers the best plans with NO data caps OR speed restriction, just one fee, and your in the world of unlimited!!!!!
