Hey guys,
I used to have an HTC Hero, but it died on me and I had to switch back to my several years old Blackberry 8330. I have the opportunity to get the EVO but I'm trying to do some research. I have seen a lot of reviews talking about poor battery life, but I can't really tell if that issue has been fixed since the launch with the new updates. The phone itself looks great compared to my old Hero. Thanks guys.
I would. I also put my money where my mouth is. I bought one 2 months ago and just bought my wife one last week.
Battery life can be fixed with rooting and a custom rom and kernel or just buy the ext. battery.
I'm running Ultimate droid 3.3.1 (GB AOSP) with the tiamat 4.0.4 SBC kernel and a 2200mha battery. I have no problems getting 24 hours out of mine ( I may get better but I'm used to plugging in a phone overnight because I had a Blackberry that had to be plugged in every night)
I had the EVO 4G for almost a year, wouldn't recommend any one to get one now. I'd tell true tech enthusiasts who want an android phone to get the Nexus S 4G now, and the average user to wait for the EVO 3D to come out in 3 weeks.

I've had the EVO since release. That following day.. seriously, I was heading to E3 with this phone the record and take pictures. knowing ahead of time what kind of battery life to expect (thanks to advanced reviews.) I not only bought a spare battery, but an external battery as well....
...I barely had enough juice to last me through a day.
Fast forward to now. (or yesterday... wait, what is today.. thursday?) And battery life isn't nearly as terrible. if I use the hell out of my phone, using an undervolted Kernel, not overclocked with brightness stuck at 40% and wifi turned on (not 4G) I might be able to squeeze 12hrs out of a single battery. MIGHT... that, again, HEAVY usage. like, lots of games, texts, checking facebook, pictures, etc. light usage, easily all day. definitely NOT a battery sipping phone by any means...but, it did get better.
if you have the chance to get an EVO for cheap, DO IT. it's a fantastic phone with a HUGE community. If this is through Sprint as an upgrade. Wait, there are a few phones over the horizon that, frankly, frightening me a little in that I think it might refuse operation and cut off oxygen supply to the living quarters (EVO3D and Galaxy S II, AKA: Galaxy Within. AKA: HAL 9000)
If I were you, I would probably wait for the EVO 3D which is just around the corner. The EVO is a great phone, and I will probably have mine another year because I'm still under contract. But since the EVO 3D is right around the corner, the EVO will lose support soon IMO. This can already be seen by the gingerbread update. Still sense 1.0...
Plus the 3D has dual core processors, among other things, which sounds pretty cool.
EDIT: Or wait for a different new phone, but as fast as technology improves I personally would not buy a phone that has been out for a year.
If your contract is up and you can get an upgrade, I'd go for the 3d. But if not and you're just buying the phone off someone, then you can't lose.
dude i would be on top of that evo like white on rice, i dont even think ill try to change mine for like another year, its just so customizable and overall complete, battery life is pretty good, not the best but its by no means bad. i get 12 to 30 depending on use
Hey guys,
Should have mentioned that I would not be buying this from Sprint. I bought my Hero in February 2010, and it died on me before the first year. I don't want to sign a new contract.

ok... then... froma friend? craigslist? what are you going to be paying?
$100? do it. $150? probably do it. $200.... ehh... that is where it starts getting touchy for me.
Personally, I wouldn't go above $150 just because there are other things coming.
If you can get one for a good price I say do it, its a great phone.

I've had my EVO since release day and have never regretted it. I love this phone. I will be upgrading to the EVO 3D if everything is OK with it. (Unlocked bootloader, Developer Support, etc)
I bought my wife an EVO yesterday to replace her POS Samsung Moment. She is thrilled! Soon lots of people will be selling their EVOs to upgrade to the EVO3D or other Sprint Android phone. I got my wife's from a guy that was forced to switch to AT&T by his employer. Got a perfect condition Hardware version 003 EVO with a screen protector, Otterbox, 3 batteries (2 extended and the original), an AC battery charger, and an extra USB cable for $250.
If you are planning to buy an EVO and not upgrading, I'd go for it. Unless you want to wait for the EVO3D. Soon you will be able to find EVOs cheap!
Yea buddy its so customizable I don't even really see myself as having jus 1 phone cuz ima flashoholic n change roms pretty much every other week n some roms fit the mood I'm in like if I wanna watch netflix n I kno ima be bored going somewhere I flash back to a 2.2 rom so I can watch but if not I'm on mik g v1.0 anywho I'm mo in love with my evo now than I was when I 1st got it
Evo is the best phone you could ever ask for. Hands down will go down in history lol unless of course they top the evo n 3D in the future lol
"Perfect is almost good enough"
I just purchased my Evo off a friend for 100$ a few days ago, and i've been playing with it non stop ever since.(rooting, flashing all sorts of roms, updating radio and wimax)
If you get a good enough deal, i'd say it's worth it.
And I replaced a moment with it, dear god what an upgrade.
just do it
its a sweet phone, im rooted with a 3500mAh battery and I've been gettin 1 day+ on sense 2.1 & 3.0 Roms, 2+ days on stock. if you aren't trying to get the evo 3D then the EVO is the next best thing (I know the nexus is bad ass and all, but I'm a HUGE sense fan, so I couldn't go with stock android)
Hey guys,
So i've been going back and forth trying to decide if I should upgrade now or wait it out until something better comes along. I love my EVO, but just getting the urge to get something new...i have mixed feelings on the 3D and am pretty stoked for the Samsung Within to come out (supposedly in late July). Also I hear more and more rumors about the iphone coming to sprint this fall. Along with apple getting sprint towers to do some serious testing on their network in KS. If those rumors do become fact and I got a phone before they annouce it, i would be kinda of pi$$ed i didnt wait it out for the iphone.
So i guess im just seeing what you guys think - if sprint will get the iphone or not this year? Or if you have an evo 3d or if your waiting on one of the motorla's to come out or the samsung within...
Just hoping to get some discussion on what everyone is waiting on from sprint this year....look forward to reading everyones posts...
EVO 3D? (Maybe, IMHO until they address the bootloader, back off of it.)
iPhone? No. If you want an iOS device wait for a new iPod Touch to tether to any Android phone.
Samsung ___ (I don't trust them), You gotta love the spec sheet on the GSII though.
I'd wait only until September just to see what crops out. If the Nexus Prime comes out, I'd go for that.
Me personally, I'll be going to the EVO 3D just on the strength of the devs that are getting it as well & the fact that I actually like Sense based roms. I'll also be selling my iPod Touch 4 as I'll be buying the new iPod Touch #_? to tether to the EVO 3D.

Why would you want the iPhone. It's such a piece and android is so much better. I would say get the 3D or wait for the within and get that. At the very least wait for something better to come out. Please do not waste your money on the garbage iPhone.
i'm waiting for news of a SGS2, otherwise the evo3d is cool

Same here. I was hoping to hear some sort of announcement this week now that HTC's new flagship has already been released. Figured Sprint has agreements with the various manufacturers to stagger announcements so that new releases aren't downplayed by other major announcements.
Nexus prime, this fall.

I got my wife the EVO3D and she absolutely loves it. (She had the EVO 4G before)
Even stock it is screaming fast. Instant response to all the touches. Root does currently seem to be an issue and why I don't use it. Wireless tether is a must for me.
As great as the EVO 3D is I think I might wait till the Holidays and get the last greatest then. I am crossing my fingers that Sprint gets the new Nexus at launch since they have been buddy buddy recently.
If the iPhone 5 comes out for Sprint (I doubt it highly) that is a great choice as well. Not as versatile as Android but it does what it does better than anybody else.
Don't flame me, I am an Android Fan boy, but I know how to show respect to the competitors.
I'd wait it out.

OK maybe I'm just poor, but are you guys paying or planning on paying full retail? Unless you have a really cool rep letting you upgrade after only one year. Is there some awesome place selling phones for cheap that I haven't heard of? (like a trustworthy seller on eBay?)
For me, I'm still holding out until the real EVO replacement. The 3d is only meh to the original. Don't care enough about 3d and the dual core stuff is still just mediocre. When they slap in dual 1 ghz processors, then were talking. Until then, the original EVO is still way up there on list of bad ass phones.

I'm leaning towards getting a 3D this week. I was going to wait for the SG2 after seeing all the negative initial reviews, but after playing with the 3D, I came away impressed. It's got everything I like about the Evo, with a form factor I like more and the 3D was actually pretty cool to see live. I'm still hoping the SG2 comes out late July as predicted so I can still make a direct comparison before any 30 day return window ends for me.

+1 on this...I tried the Evo 3d yesterday not impressed at all
I think my Evo is working just fine and probably sticking with it. I'm going to wait for the next generation of phones (quad-cores).
I can't stand Apple but have you guys read this article?
LINK
I looked at the 3D live and it was nice, but I'm not excited enough to drop a pile of cash for it. I spoke to a Sprint Rep on the phone and she seemed to think that I could get the $75 Premier discount plus the $150 recycle discount for turning in my EVO 4G and that would get me the 3D for free. But after doing more research, it seems like she was just confused.
As far as I can tell, I'd need to buy the phone outright for $450-550 and I'd be able to discount $225 from that. Leaving me another $225+ out of pocket.
The other option would be canceling my contract and paying something just under $200 for early cancellation. Then signing a new 2 year contract and getting the 3D for $180. But that still leaves me paying ~$155 out of pocket.
Is this math generally correct? Or is there another way to upgrade the EVO 4G to the EVO 3D for lower out of pocket costs?
As for which phone I'd upgrade to if I was willing to spend $200-300+, I'm very excited about the SGII but I'm a bit worried about the lack of recent news about possible Sprint coverage on it. I'm also very interested in the Nexus Prime, but by the time it is due out I was expecting to start seeing quad core phones coming out.
Additionally, now after seeing the recent network speed tests and how Sprint is so terrible and my recent problems with extremely slow 3G speeds, I'm seriously considering a switch to Verizon when I upgrade. Plus the fact that I'm seeing Verizon's 4G network expand so much faster than Sprint's (which after a full year is still not available in my area) and the fact that Sprint may be switching over to LTE.
That looks like an HTC or Motorola to me, not an Apple.
I must admit, it looks sexy.

yeah i did, just checked it out actually before coming over to XDA...can you tell im working hard over here. I can't tell if I like that form factor or not. I HATED the iphone 4 form factor when it first came out and thought it was the ugliest thing in the world then, but now I love it. If it does look like that I guess I'd have to hold it and see how it is.
What do you guys think - think it wil be a totally revamped iphone coming out this fall or just some minor upgrades, like being compatable with Sprint's network?
The SGSII looks sick as hell and i might have to snatch that up - really hoping the iphone comes to sprint tho - without the outrageous prices!
Thanks for all the comments so far!

IMHO you have to remember, if you keep worrying about the "next best thing" there will be something better to follow, right behind it. I'd wait two months tops, just to see what else will become available.
$155 - $225 for the EVO 3D isn't bad, its generally what you'd normally pay for an average upgrade.
BTW you can't mention switching to Verizon if you're looking to manage money, I don't think you'll be too excited paying more "out of pocket" per month than you have to.

Can you post a link to the negative reviews? I've seen nothing but raving reviews on this phone. It's nice to have a balanced opinion.
How is the SGS2 different then the EVO 3D, aren't they the same or similar specs?
My Verizon contract expires on the 26th but I'm really not feeling the selection of phones right now. I wanted n LTE phone until I realized the current offerings were sub par. Then I thought I would wait for the Bionic but with the release of the locked down Droid 3 I'm not feeling optimistic about the bionic. Being locked down is a deal breaker for me. I'm thinking about getting a used incredible locally for about 150 atleast until Verizon comes out with some worthy LTE contendors. Thoughts? I'm coming from an OG Droid by the way.

if u want LTE get the charge if you want 3G get the Dinc 2 or Dinc
Probably not a bad idea to get an original incredible and wait to see what happens with the bionic and sgs2.
Second that. Get the Inc used at a good price and hope for a legit LTE phone from HTC next year. I feel like Verizon is focused on getting LTE up and running this year as opposed to putting out really good phones.
I prefer HTC, myself. If the Sensation or EVO 3D were on Verizon I'd consider it. I think it's just an off year for Verizon and new phones.
I love my DInc, as does everyone else I've talked to or read a post from. It's a classic with unbelievable Dev support. Coming from OG Droid you won't be disappointed, esp if you like the slightly slimmer form factor.
Thanks for the feedback. I think I am going to go ahead and get one. I was definitely really impressed with the amount of dev support in the development forum. I think the bump in CPU speed/RAM + smaller form factor will be enough to tide me over for a year or so. I just didn't want to waste my upgrade on a phone right now and be locked in all through next year when hopefully better phones will be coming out.
yeah you won't be disappointed with the dinc. i still haven't found what i would like to replace it with. i'll keep it till it burns up (knock on glass)

My brother has the og droid, and I put miui on it (I have miui on my phone too), and the inc blows it out of the water. Even with an overclocked kernel on the droid, it can't compare to the inc. you'll love the speed increase and the awesome devs that the inc has!

The dInc blows the OG Droid out of the water, and is still a very competent phone by todays standards.
I actually really didn't like the Droid Incredible when I first used it because something seemed cheap about it. Realized a day later it was because of how quickly everything was loading on it, made it seem like there was no substance to the applications. Idiotic complaint? Yes, but my brain works in weird ways.
Love the phone. If you can get a cheap used/refurb I'd do that, I would be all about the SGS2 if it came with LTE, I'm thinking I may be waiting for the SGS3 to come out or one of the better HTC LTE phones.
I've had my DInc since the day after it was released and love mine. I almost got a DInc2 but decided against it. I will wait till Christmas time and try to get a multicore phone. My DInc does everything I need it to do, while there will always be a bigger and faster phone coming, I can wait.
Thanks for the support guys...meeting craigslist seller tomorrow morning for $125. Here's to hoping the VZW rep will tell me the ESN is clear!
Good luck, that sounds like a good price if its clean. I paid about $200 for mine 3-4 months ago if that's any indication.
I purchased mine off ebay. It's a great phone. My only complaint would be the screen. It's very hard to see outside in the daylight.

The incredible is a worthy upgrade from the OG Droid (I did the same thing in March), but only if you can get it for cheap. I got mine from verizon for $100. I only got it to satisfy my craving for faster technology since the lack of ram on the OG was pissing me off. I'll be ditching the incredible when I find a phone worthy of my (last) new every 2 (so essentially something thats 4G, Dual/Triple/Quadcore, and an unlocked bootloader), I wouldn't mind it if it launched with Ice Cream Sandwich either
you really can't go wrong with this phone... the devs having it doing things it was never designed for and it does it well! sense 3.0and panoramic camera are awesome.
The other deal for 125 fell through but I picked one up today..already loving the phone. MIUI is beautiful and it absolutely rips on this phone compared to my Droid.

I completely agree with you about upgrading to a Dinc2. My Dinc1 is awesome and I'd probably end up regretting using my upgrade on a Dinc2.
I wouldn't hesitate to tell someone to pickup a used Dinc1 at all. Coming from an OG Droid I couldn't be happier. I have to see if the Bionic is locked down, most likely will be, to make an upgrade decision. Guess I'll just have to be patient.
I've been fighting with my phone for it to work properly ever since the 2.3.3 upgrade and I'm about to toss it out the window for a Nexus S. I'm just hoping someone on craigslist will be willing to trade. Any comments on this decision? What are your opinions of the Nexus S, especially compared to the Evo 4g...
Also, have any of you traded phones to save money? If I make this trade I will have made 7 trades in the last year, without paying a penny and using basically every high-end android phone sprint has/had to offer. (Also, someone was dumb enough to trade me their epic for my hero. I warned them about the downgrade they were making, but they wanted the phone for its size.)
I'm fed up as well. you might as well trade!
i just traded my Evo for a Nexus S4G...i love the phone, very fast and responsive...the screen is awesome...the radios suck...they just updated and tbh i havent noticed any difference...sum have and sum havent...i miss sense though...i have found all the apps to reproduce wat sense does for my phone...none work as good as sense though...easy to root/unroot...maybe 5 roms total available...lol will be a shock coming from the Evo to be sure...customizing isnt a priority for the devs in the nexus formums it seems...they like it pure...which is fine but kinda boring...
overall i am happy, just wish the radios were better...i only got the NS4G as a stop gap waiting on sumthing better to hit sprint to use my upgrade on...i put my Evo on craigslist and it wasnt in gr8 condition either, had 20 replys by morning...traded less than 16 hours after posting it...hope this helps, spend sum time on the xda forum for the NS4G before you jump though...wish i would have now...good luck
yeah i feel your pain, i had a rooted evo and it broke, so i had to return it for a new one and got one with the update already on it so im using my upgrade for the new motorola photon....i'm going to miss my evo....
I wouldn't even trade on CL. If you have tep you can just exchange it. The tep program allows for exchange of the Evo for the nexus or shift. I was on my first Evo refurb with the locked bootloader with screen separation and a week vibrator motor and I said f*#k it and asked for a nexus. They said sure, but were out of stock. So they're sending me a new Evo in the box to hold me over and then sending me the nexus in two weeks.. all free. And if you don't have tep, just talk nice with a Sprint rep and see what they can do.

I'm sick of my camera locking up after 3 or 4 pictures and then rebooting. No root does make this phone just as boring as any other.

Ok I have been with sprint for less than a week. I came from att. Switched for lower price that's it! With att for just over a year and had a iphone 3gs, iphone 4, dell streak twice, samsung captivate twice, htc inspire, samsung infuse and motorola atrix. Damn that's alot. Anyways, I kinda know my way around a phone. If you guys and gals (I assume) got your hands on a htc infuse you would feel so different about a evo. I got 3 lines all with evos for free plus a port in credit of $375. I had my evo for 2 days! I am not bashing anyone that likes or has a evo at all. This is my opinion. I returned that and got a NS4G, granted I love me a big ol phone, but damn! I am running decks 1.3b with matr1x kernel oc'ed to 1.44 and uv'ed and get a quad of almost 3000! I know the test don't mean crap but I was blown away. No fc's or nothing! Its butter smooth and can get a day of moderate use easy. Plus the screen is so rich in colors. The one con I have is reception, buts it don't help where my house is. It is a very nice phone.
Honestly, if you can't live without sense don't do it cause you wont want to go back. If you don't care for sense, then you should pick one up cause bestbuy has them for free! Plus it is so flippin easy to root.

The Nexus S was okay nothing like the N1 i got tired of it locking up and the video recording quality sucks id go to the Evo 3D. I been happy with that phone.

I really love my evo to death but this replacement is killing me, hoping for root soon!

I loved m EVO before it got replaced due to a routine test failing, now I'm stuck on 2.3 w/ no root. There is a problem with the vibration in the one they gave me however. How much is the Photon running..maybe I'll look into that or making the trade for the Shift.
Add me to the list, I walked blindly into this mess . My Hero finally croaked on me (had been limping it along for months on a intermittent digitizer + generally terrible performance due to getting wet 'why get insurance when you've never destroyed a phone before' Murphy's law? lol) and just bought an Evo 4G knowing it was already a year old, but still looked pretty well spec'd and they were willing to give me a much better early upgrade price on it vs. the Nexus S. First thoughts, holy crap this thing is fast coming from the Hero, but by the end of the work day Friday I was chomping at the bit to get home and start trying some ROMs, specifically the Synergy + Godmode, only to hit a brick wall before even getting started.
I love the phone, but not being able to get rid of all the crapware and mess with different ROMs sucks.
Alright, when I had the HTC mogul, I was maybe one year into my contract and it broke. At this time time the insurance company and sprint stopped stocking this phone so I got a free upgrade. When do you think they will stop stocking the evo 4g considering no one will really be buying it anymore since the evo 3d is out. My evo has dead spots and I dont want to turn it in and then a week later realize I could have gotten the 3d. Anyone have any insight on this?
I don't think that will happen anytime soon. Of course, someone posted here that they do not get that many EVO's turned in with issues so they do not have alot of refurbs to hand out. I just had mine replaced by Asurion last week and got a NIB EVO. My son lost his moment a few months ago and the replacement device would have been another moment and that phone is almost 2 yrs old. (and a pos, I got Sprint to reset my upgrade because there was no way I was going to pay the $100 deductible for another moment). I think you will be waiting a very long time.

I was just at a local sprint store today and as I was getting my Evo checked out for random reboots and my sound going up and down on its own and thats without being rooted.. he opened up a cabinet and much to my suprise there was tons of OG Evo's and a few 3d's.. Yes the 3d is being scooped up fast, but I dont think it will be for a very long time before the OG Evo is done with and not being restocked.. its still one of the top sellers for Sprint
The evo has reached EOL as of a week ago or so. So that means they have stopped making them. So basically the only evo's left are what stores already have, and maybe a few left in their warehouses.
Generally when a phone EOL's, there will still be refurbs available for warranty and insurance claims for at least a few months after the EOL date. After that, you will probably be given an upgrade to a new phone.
I read somewhere that Evo's will stop being produced in a few months, but their production definitely has been reduced because of the 3D.

Good luck getting an upgrade. I spent 5 months trying to get a downgrade from sprint fixed. Ultimately I had to use my upgrade and get a new phone. So good luck with being upgraded by sprints warranty.
We have 2 OG EVO's with best buys warranty instead. Had a samsung moment that broke 2 times and the second they didn't stock it and "upgraded" us to a samsung intercept (really a downgrade). Five months later I had to use my upgrade on my sons account and get him the EVO shift (his choice) and got a whopping $50 or $75 credit for the 40-50 hours I spent on the phone and computer trying to resolve the issue.
Anyway. Bottom line.
Good luck with that. I hope you do get upgraded!!!
No surprise.
I seen a few peeps get an og evo today
Still popular
I took mine in for a error 78 issue they offered a refurbished evo replacement but they advises to wait if I can maybe I can get a cheaper evo 3d in a few months maybe even a free nexus s

The EVO 4G is NOT EOL right now. I'm actually selling more of the OG EVO than the EVO 3d, although that's likely becuase I only handle corporate and government accounts, and they don't want to pay twice the cost for the EVO 3d now that the EVO is $99.99. The Evo still does everything business users need it to do and more, so it's popularity really hasn't waned like previous smartphones did (the moment the EVO came out, NOBODY wanted to be on the Hero, even though it was the greatest thing since sliced bread about 9 months before).
If I had to guess it will be a long time before you start seeing EVO's replaced with newer phone models on a regular basis, if only because we seem to reserve more phones to cover exchanges on the really popular models once they've gone EOL. usually when I see a lot of options for other phones models it's on a handset that we only sold for a couple of months and nobody wanted wanted anyway (anybody remember the Moto Q9C? Be thankful you don't! I could replace that with a different model within weeks of EOL.)

hey now, I stock with that piece of junk q9c until the hero was released. picked it up on day one. I'll hold on to the evo until something better comes up even then it is going have to really offer a lot more than what I have now.
That would be the nexus prime. It should be here before thanksgiving n it will be the ULTIMATE android phone to date no matter what carrier your on. It will also start to dissolve other brands u.i. due to that being the main reason behind 90% of all problems we have with our phones. This way we won't have to worry about looking for exploits to obtain root because Google already made the root, eventually it will just be a simple click in the settings like turning 4g on n off
A month or so ago Best Buy told me that Sprint is doing early contract renewals. It was supposed to be a limited time offer. Maybe if you're nice they might still do it.
