If they do, it will be missing 4G (amongst other things) until Samsung upgrades it themselves. But I think you made a good move.
I hope you enjoy the Epic more than the Evo. Im hanging onto my Evo until i get the Epic in hand and have a day or two to play with it. If all goes as expected then the Evo will be my girlfriends phone
Good choice . I have the vibrant and I love it. Good to see another sgs phone released ...

how much did returning your evo go towards getting your epic?

Wel luckily I was within my 3 days of buying my evo (bought it July 30th) at best buy. So I returned it and went ahead and preordered the epic too.
So I'll just have to pay the 50+ tax difference
Can't wait til Tuesday !
Congrats on making the switch! The EVO really never did it for me. Don't like the phones accent color, Sense UI, and the layout of the capacitive buttons.
The Epic shall be EPIC!!!

This is exactly what I'm doing, except I'm just getting the Epic regardless. My girl really wants the EVO so, good for me d'.'d
Speaking off best buy basically said I was only like the 5th preorder
Man is samsung or sprint screwing this launch up? I get worried because if it flops will that mean little Dev support (custom roms) or samsung official support like software updates?
Stupid doublepost.
"The Decision"
When did you decide?
I think I decided this morning. I mean, I decided this morning I went day to day. I wake up one morning, it's this device. I wake up another morning, it's this other device. And it's a process that I felt it was I may feel like this is the best opportunity for me or not the best opportunity for me.
But this morning I woke up, had a great conversation with myself. Once I had that conversation, I think I was set.
The answer to the question everybody wants to know: What's your decision?
In this fall, this is very tough, in this fall I'm going to take my talents to Samsung and get the EPIC.
Hahaha. Wonder if there will be a letter from the Company owner of the "other device" about his decision.... LOL!

Sprint is launching the phone, not Samsung. There is only so much that Samsung can do because they have 1 phone with 4 different names and 4 different sets of features on 4 carriers.
The commercials I saw advertised the "Galaxy S" phone. Unless you're a bit of an electronics/technology fan, then you won't put 2+3 together to realize that the Epic/Vibrant/Captivate/Fascinate are variants of the Galaxy S.
Besides that, certain other carriers like Verizon have done a decent job at branding their smartphone line.
I pulled out my Vibrant last week to show it to someone and they asked me if it was a Droid phone. Two choices:
1. Answer "no" and take 3 minutes to explain that 'droid' is a brand name and what android is and where my phone fits in.
2. Answer "yes" and avoid boring that person with a bunch of information they won't remember anyway.
Even though this phone is nicer than the EVO, I don't see it selling very big. Sprint customers are generally with Sprint because they are cheaper than Verizon and AT&T. The $250 price and +$10 "4G" fee for having the phone will keep people away.... especially since the Captivate and Vibrant are available on AT&T and T-mobile for $50 less up front, and ~$10 less per month (in t-mobile's case).
Also, the EVO just came out about a month ago or so. Its good that Sprint is getting some nice handsets, but they are going to price themselves out of their niche if they aren't careful. I expect the Epic to drop to $199 within 2 weeks of release.... I think they are just trying to squeeze early adopters
Don't they have to wait 30 days before dropping the price? Otherwise all the "early adopters" will become 2-week adopters as they en-masse return the phone and buy it again at the lower price.
Sorry if this is old news, but I was in 2 malls this week doing some christmas shopping, and saw kiosks devoted ONLY to the Evo. There were about 6 Evos on display and 2 big evos like the iphones in the apple store. Funny thing was, one of them was setup right in-front of the apple store. Im sure that wasnt on accident! Go sprint!
PS, this was in Los Angeles Anyone else see these?
Is that the new EVO 4G Tablet on the side of the kiosk?

Saw these a couple months ago at Topanga Mall and Northridge Mall. It's one reason why I don't understand why the 42-inch nexus s is news worthy.

...because it just came out and is the headlining Android phone? Which brings me to my main point, does anyone think it's sad that the EVO is still Sprint's flagship phone? During the same time period:
a. Verizon had the Incredible, then the Droid X, Fascinate, Droid 2, and now the Droid Pro.
b. AT&T had the iPhone 4, Captivate, BB Torch, and now a slew of WP7 phones.
c. T-Mo had the MyTouch 3G slide, Vibrant, G2, MyTouch 4G, and now the Nexus S.
..and Sprint? The EVO and Epic. What's up with that? This isn't a which phone is better thing, just pointing out how much Sprint is lacking on the high end phone selection.
Since as a Premier member I can only upgrade every 12 monts, I'm cool with it.

Sprint's NEVER had the biggest phone selection. They offer a few fantastic phones and dirt cheap plans. Honestly though, I'd pick the Evo and the Epic over any Android phone out there right now though haha. The Nexus S would be the only one I'd consider, but not anywhere near enough to leave spring haha

T-Mo is arguably as cheap plus it's HSPA+ is free. With them you got the options of: the Vibrant (it's SGS variant but is "meh"), G2 (Powerful and slick slider with Vanilla Android), MyTouch 4G (which is just about the/one of the best spec'd phones out), or the Nexus S (arguably the best phone out right now).
You could argue that you'll just upgrade every year in June but how is that a good thing? I mean, look at that Shift 4G thread where people are arguing on whether the EVO is still worth getting? It's 6 months old, I would feel extremely limited and not to mention shafted if I needed to get a high end Sprint phone right now.
I just think that Sprint has to step up with some more phones.

Yeah, but the EVO is still a stronger performing phone than most of the phones you listed there. Aside from the Droid Pro and Nexus S there isn't one phone there that would replace my EVO. Those WP7 phones aren't even a consideration imo....

The Droid Pro is trash IMO. I'd consider the Nexus S, iPhone 4, G2, and maybe (but probably not) a WP7 phone. It's all matter of preference but the fact is that you got more worthwhile phones to judge and I wish that was the case with Sprint.
And what does all this crap have to do with the original question about the kiosk?
Agreed! I sell phones and I am yet to come by an android phone as reliable, fast, and attractive as the Evo. Sprint's got a lock on phone quality. All the other android phones you mentioned dont measure up...except the Nexus S.

I sell more evos than any other phone, half the phones i sell are evos, the phone's over 6 months old, still crazy popular, and has hardware specs that other phones are just now finally beating. HTC did an awesome job with it, can't wait to see their next phone after the shift.

All carriers will help you with the cost of your ETF. Call and ask, it's Christmas season.
I rather walk in the sprint store and see a few great phones that will fit my needs... maybe like a front facing camera? Or a 4.3 inch screen? HDMI out? 10+mbps of data speed? A kick stand to kick back in the office and watch Hulu at full speed? Or play Need for Speed Shift while waiting for my girl? Maybe use Fring to video chat with her since she also has a front facing camera? Or how about getting on the XDA app and laugh at stupid posts people make regarding sprint and phones and trophys about tours..
Oh crap.. i just dropped my keys.. let me use my twin-led flashlight to find them...
I found them!!
Where was i?
I was jamming out... downloading music with Gtunes.. i can also use windows explorer/music/copy all... dragging and dropping the music files i need without connecting to itunes and syncing...
I just got a notification on my Sony Ericsson Live View... i can see my twitter replys without taking my evo out of my pocket...
Aww crap... i lost wifi signal at work, so did my co-workers... ill just turn on my Hotspot.. there.. me and my friends have full speed 4G signal on thier pcs via my internal router on my Evo...
Im gonna watch youtube... let me connect my HDMI enabled phone on my 42 inch tv...

Sprint used to stick the EVO and Epic up top above even their cheap phones when you looked at the phones for sale on their website.
Now the Epic is near the bottom with the expensive phones. The EVO Shift has taken its place, but the EVO is still at the top.
If there were any lingering doubts as to how Sprint felt about the Epic vs. other phones in their lineup, that should be gone now.
Not sure why they moved it down, especially since they dropped it down to 199.99 from 249.99 (after rebates of course). You would think they would want to showcase the price drop.
yep I saw that too , not sure though if were looking too much into it. I try not to worry about things like that.
It's been clear from the start that the epic is a throw away product to sprint. I've owned an epic since a few days after launch and I've only ever seen one single ad for it. One. Meanwhile there are evo commercials still running in prime time.

I think Sprint either has some sort of deal with HTC or they just don't like Samsung. It was the same way with the Hero vs. the Moment. The Hero was darling and the Moment was an afterthought.
Out here in Los Angeles they have a lot of ads for the epic. They were made by samsung and talked about the multi media ability of the epic and had a big epic movie theme.

Do you remember the ORIGINAL galaxy s pro specs?
4" SAMOLED
1ghz hummingbird
16GB internal memory
1GB RAM
Hdmi-out
Now what would've happened if sprint released that phone right after blowin so much cash to market the EVO's "massive [8GB] memory, fast [sub-par] processor, and "gorgeous" [lol] screen?
Also, the evo's hdmi out was a big selling point because it was the only one with it.
Everyone would've definitey picked epic over evo when the specs were listed side by side, but sprint would've lost a lot of marketing money so they gimped it
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
I def feel Sprint keeps the Epic on behind the Evo in terms of marketing. Not so much with their other phones because the other phones market to a different segment. I'm in the philly burbs and I can't recall a single Epic TV ad but there are tons of Evo ads on TV and internet. And when the Epic got it's push on Sprint's website, it was always featured in concert with the Evo. Never on it's own (save for the super lame ad they had over the summer that displayed features that any smart phone can do)

It's not completely Sprint's fault [regarding the **** in the site]. They are controled by market push and they have to respond to what there providers give them, and what they agree to sell.
In this case, the Epic / Evo phones have been around for 6+ Months, and new inventory has rolled in, they have the presure of the phone providers to make space for (NEW) stock.
And if anyone ask, though I'm a communications SFC right now in the Army, I worked with Orange [France Telecom], Vodafone and Duch Telecom for many years, and I know how the game is played internally when it comes to hype new product and decomm phones that have been in the market for X amount of time. Its a shift of power and money driven by the market and phone manufactures.
ok the epic is back where it suppose to be....that better
I've seen dozens of ads for the epic. Keep in mind this is on Hulu but still they pushed hard when it launched.
And what is Sprint going to sell besides the EVO or Epic? Nothing else comes close to either model for Sprint.

One reason would be because the Evo is Sprint's biggest selling phone. It's still on backorder in a lot of places. I've been waiting over a month for my replacement to come in. Had to wait 7 weeks when I broke the screen on my first one. Where as I walked right into the Sprint store & picked up 2 Epics same day with no problem & had one replaced with only a 3 day wait. The Epic isn't as popular a phone as some of you may think it should be. Fact of the matter is, even though the Evo is 6 months old it is still in high demand & seen with high regard as the the only really legitimate iPhone contender in Sprint's lineup. They are hoping to continue that trend by cashing in on the Evo name brand by moving the Evo Shift to the top of the list. The Epic while a good phone & marginally better specs doesn't carry that same appeal with consumers. Add that into Samsung's refusal to come out with timely updates and the Epic lands itself at the bottom. By the time the Epic finally gets Froyo, if ever, HTC will be rolling out Gingerbread to the Evo & Shift and/or be ready to drop their next big Android flagship. Samsung should stick to HDTV's IMO. They have shown that they don't fully get the smartphone community.

As much as I'm an "Epic Fanboi" and really don't like the Evo, I really hate to admit it, but I believe you're right... (Except for the "marginally better specs" part)... The Evo was the first flagship device and Sprint's riding that train to the bank. They're now even showing commercials:
"here's something nice that was said about the Evo... and Here's the next Evo.. the Evo Shift" garbage.. they're capitalizing on the "Evo" name like Verizon did/does on the "droid" moniker.
And us Epic lovers are left in the dust. :/

I completely agree
It's all about marketing. I don't think it has anything to do with like or dislike. The evo shift is the newest smartphone out so of course they are going to push and advertise it. They want the public to know about their new product so they can sell it. I'm no marketing expert but that makes sense to me why they are advertising it a lot.

True to a point but why not advertise the Epic? I've seen one commercial in slight rotation about the Epic since its release. It's been almost 6 months now. This was supposed to be Samsung's flagship phone. I don't by the Sprint/HTC partnership thing either. Sprint has always sold HTC phones going back to the Apache for me. But the Samsung Instinct was it biggest selling phone before the Pré & now Evo. Even the Moment sold pretty good but just not as good as the Hero. I think Sprint is starting to learn their lesson about Samsung from all of the complaints & bad press they got over the Instinct & Moment. Samsung has great hardware & ideas but constantly falls short on follow thru. Has happened with every big phone they have put out.

I have had the Epic since day 1 and within the first 3 days had to return the phone twice. Maybe another week later i had to have my third Epic replaced, mind you they were all brand new from the store not refurbished. The past week my most recent Epic has been freezing, microphone going out, texts being sent 3 days after they were meant to have been.... Well long story short i needed a new phone and ive always owned HTC's until the Epic. I have to say both phones are amazing, the Epics screen is hands down much crisper than the Evo's but the EVO's ram is slightly quicker. I would like the communities opinion on wether or not I should keep the EVO or get another Epic or keep the EVO till the 3d edition comes out which falls under my one month return policy What are the 3d's specs looking like compared to the others and is the 3d even going to be worth it? I have SPB mobile shell 3d and showd it to the manager up at sprint and he said that it is almost identical. Sorry if i ranted but im in a very happy mood right now.
Keep the Evo, run CM7 on it, and wait for the 3D.
This keep the E3D thing looks beast.
I say sell both old ass phones and get a Evo 3d or a GS2.
Thanks for the quick replies guys. im thinking im gonna to go the 3d route. it seems to be most logical deal. plus the 2 cores wont hurt . If anyone has any other information or opinions they are most welcome, thanks.
I have an Evo 4G. I've considered ditching it for an Epic, but only because I've missed the physical keyboard since I bought it (first day) and didn't know that the Epic or other physical-keyboard phones were coming. I'm running Sprint Lovers' 2.2, haven't put GB on because of bugs in it.
One note on the Evo 3g: as of now, the boot-loader is still locked. HTC says they will unlock it. No idea the timeframe.

Hey guys,
So i've been going back and forth trying to decide if I should upgrade now or wait it out until something better comes along. I love my EVO, but just getting the urge to get something new...i have mixed feelings on the 3D and am pretty stoked for the Samsung Within to come out (supposedly in late July). Also I hear more and more rumors about the iphone coming to sprint this fall. Along with apple getting sprint towers to do some serious testing on their network in KS. If those rumors do become fact and I got a phone before they annouce it, i would be kinda of pi$$ed i didnt wait it out for the iphone.
So i guess im just seeing what you guys think - if sprint will get the iphone or not this year? Or if you have an evo 3d or if your waiting on one of the motorla's to come out or the samsung within...
Just hoping to get some discussion on what everyone is waiting on from sprint this year....look forward to reading everyones posts...
EVO 3D? (Maybe, IMHO until they address the bootloader, back off of it.)
iPhone? No. If you want an iOS device wait for a new iPod Touch to tether to any Android phone.
Samsung ___ (I don't trust them), You gotta love the spec sheet on the GSII though.
I'd wait only until September just to see what crops out. If the Nexus Prime comes out, I'd go for that.
Me personally, I'll be going to the EVO 3D just on the strength of the devs that are getting it as well & the fact that I actually like Sense based roms. I'll also be selling my iPod Touch 4 as I'll be buying the new iPod Touch #_? to tether to the EVO 3D.

Same here. I was hoping to hear some sort of announcement this week now that HTC's new flagship has already been released. Figured Sprint has agreements with the various manufacturers to stagger announcements so that new releases aren't downplayed by other major announcements.
Nexus prime, this fall.

I got my wife the EVO3D and she absolutely loves it. (She had the EVO 4G before)
Even stock it is screaming fast. Instant response to all the touches. Root does currently seem to be an issue and why I don't use it. Wireless tether is a must for me.
As great as the EVO 3D is I think I might wait till the Holidays and get the last greatest then. I am crossing my fingers that Sprint gets the new Nexus at launch since they have been buddy buddy recently.
If the iPhone 5 comes out for Sprint (I doubt it highly) that is a great choice as well. Not as versatile as Android but it does what it does better than anybody else.
Don't flame me, I am an Android Fan boy, but I know how to show respect to the competitors.
I'd wait it out.

OK maybe I'm just poor, but are you guys paying or planning on paying full retail? Unless you have a really cool rep letting you upgrade after only one year. Is there some awesome place selling phones for cheap that I haven't heard of? (like a trustworthy seller on eBay?)
For me, I'm still holding out until the real EVO replacement. The 3d is only meh to the original. Don't care enough about 3d and the dual core stuff is still just mediocre. When they slap in dual 1 ghz processors, then were talking. Until then, the original EVO is still way up there on list of bad ass phones.

I'm leaning towards getting a 3D this week. I was going to wait for the SG2 after seeing all the negative initial reviews, but after playing with the 3D, I came away impressed. It's got everything I like about the Evo, with a form factor I like more and the 3D was actually pretty cool to see live. I'm still hoping the SG2 comes out late July as predicted so I can still make a direct comparison before any 30 day return window ends for me.

+1 on this...I tried the Evo 3d yesterday not impressed at all
I think my Evo is working just fine and probably sticking with it. I'm going to wait for the next generation of phones (quad-cores).
I can't stand Apple but have you guys read this article?

I looked at the 3D live and it was nice, but I'm not excited enough to drop a pile of cash for it. I spoke to a Sprint Rep on the phone and she seemed to think that I could get the $75 Premier discount plus the $150 recycle discount for turning in my EVO 4G and that would get me the 3D for free. But after doing more research, it seems like she was just confused.
As far as I can tell, I'd need to buy the phone outright for $450-550 and I'd be able to discount $225 from that. Leaving me another $225+ out of pocket.
The other option would be canceling my contract and paying something just under $200 for early cancellation. Then signing a new 2 year contract and getting the 3D for $180. But that still leaves me paying ~$155 out of pocket.
Is this math generally correct? Or is there another way to upgrade the EVO 4G to the EVO 3D for lower out of pocket costs?
As for which phone I'd upgrade to if I was willing to spend $200-300+, I'm very excited about the SGII but I'm a bit worried about the lack of recent news about possible Sprint coverage on it. I'm also very interested in the Nexus Prime, but by the time it is due out I was expecting to start seeing quad core phones coming out.
Additionally, now after seeing the recent network speed tests and how Sprint is so terrible and my recent problems with extremely slow 3G speeds, I'm seriously considering a switch to Verizon when I upgrade. Plus the fact that I'm seeing Verizon's 4G network expand so much faster than Sprint's (which after a full year is still not available in my area) and the fact that Sprint may be switching over to LTE.
That looks like an HTC or Motorola to me, not an Apple.
I must admit, it looks sexy.

yeah i did, just checked it out actually before coming over to XDA...can you tell im working hard over here. I can't tell if I like that form factor or not. I HATED the iphone 4 form factor when it first came out and thought it was the ugliest thing in the world then, but now I love it. If it does look like that I guess I'd have to hold it and see how it is.
What do you guys think - think it wil be a totally revamped iphone coming out this fall or just some minor upgrades, like being compatable with Sprint's network?
The SGSII looks sick as hell and i might have to snatch that up - really hoping the iphone comes to sprint tho - without the outrageous prices!
Thanks for all the comments so far!

IMHO you have to remember, if you keep worrying about the "next best thing" there will be something better to follow, right behind it. I'd wait two months tops, just to see what else will become available.
$155 - $225 for the EVO 3D isn't bad, its generally what you'd normally pay for an average upgrade.
BTW you can't mention switching to Verizon if you're looking to manage money, I don't think you'll be too excited paying more "out of pocket" per month than you have to.

Can you post a link to the negative reviews? I've seen nothing but raving reviews on this phone. It's nice to have a balanced opinion.
How is the SGS2 different then the EVO 3D, aren't they the same or similar specs?
