Heya there! Seems like I'm one of the unlucky ones who got a 2.2 Transformer. Is there a safe way to install one of the 3.1 roms on those? I don't just want to go ahead and update the thing with like, Primordial, because it might break it if the partitioning is different.
I would keep it as is or sell it on eBay. That is a RARE tablet!
It might be rare, but it's pretty unuseable as a tablet. That's not really helping me. And I don't think It'd sell any better than normal ones on ebay, it's after all well known what's inside the system by this point.
Apologies. My answer was not helpful to you.
I do not think that you will have an issue just taking the leaked HC 3.1 and just installing it over your 2.2 install. Be sure to do a Nandroid backup first.......and if you are able to....post it here for the devs to play with.
Can anyone else confirm that this will not harm his tablet?

yes, it is possible. not sure if it is public yet.
Wait, some of these TFs come with Froyo? Lol, seriously? I hope I misunderstood that.
Some (I think 5 are known by now) did indeed. It's an early version of Froyo that has a lot of apps for testing the different hardware of the transformer preinstalled, but is otherwise... Well, Froyo, not Honeycomb ^^
Also having problems installing it here... I figure I need to somehow replace the recovery, so I can use cwm, but I can't figure out how to do it. This Transformer also comes with a Fastboot option, so maybe there's more to it.
I can assure you that you would probably pull more money for it on ebay than you would for a regular transformer. Not to mention, several people who purchased tablets that had 2.2 on it were contacted by ASUS and we given the option to replace it and I think they got some kind of bonus for turning it in. I can certainly imagine they don't want their in house programs leaking out to other companies or the public.
Return it to the retailer or call Asus.
You're not the first that posted about getting 2.2.
It's useless, don't bother selling it on eBay, they charge 9% for things over $400+ and PayPal charges 3%, It's really not worth selling it.
Yesterday my tablet offered to update, but it failed the update - tried twice. The only thing I've done is root the tablet, I haven't uninstalled any default apps or anything.
I figured no big deal I'd try at work from my development machine today where I could unroot it and check adb logs and such.
Today I check for updates and I get "Your device is up to date" but I'm still on 3.0.1.
--- UPDATE ---
Checked the devel forum and found that this appears to be the case - they pulled the update and promise a new build tomorrow:

hmmm, I wonder if it's anything to do with getting kicked out of the browser on a regular basis since I installed 3.1. And maybe the laggy keyboard?
so.. what'll happen if you successfully updated and aren't having any problems?
Seems like nothing if you already have 3.1 installed successfully... My tablet is still on 3.1 with no issues there.
I got a message to update to 3.1 today and have tried 3 times to apply the update, failed each time. I have unrooted, factory reset, and still failed. I am hoping that it is on ACER's end and not something in my tab.
My tablet is back to stock and still only gets 1/4 of the way through the application of the update before getting the orange ! in a triangle.
I spoke to ACER yesterday. They said there is a known problem with the 3.1 update and they should be releasing a new one soon. I asked how soon, but got no response. Once I got the update notification today, I thought maybe it was the new one?? Guess not.
Model: A500
Version: 3.0.1
Kernal: 2.6.36.3-00001-g9b3ce2b
Build: 1.104.02_COM_GEN1
EDIT: I am in ATL and bought my tablet from BestBuy in Kennesaw GA opening weekend.
Any advice?
I lost my opportunity to install 4.010.08. Two days ago I got the notice of an update. I tried to hold off as I wanted to see if I could capture the update and share it with others. After I got off work the next day and with some alogcat info I tried to check for updates and it was gone. Now I'm stuck on 3. 01 still. Hopefully they push out the update again as this time ill be ready.

I, also, am having no operating system issues with 3.1. Overdrive Media Console has gone flakey with respect to audiobooks, but I was blaming that on OMC, not 3.1. I was very surprised to learn that Acer pulled the update. This begs the question, of course, what will happen with regard to the new update for those of us who successfully updated to 3.1? I had no problems and I had a rooted tablet, but had not made any other modifications.

Is there a source other than what someone on XDA has "said"?
People lie. I'm not saying the original user lied but I've already seen a few posts linking to that one claiming along the lines, that 'Acer has said they pulled the update' when there is absolutely no official source.
The update has worked and is working for many of us. A friend of mine also got an update yesterday, which doesn't fall in line with the update being 'pulled' by Acer.
As you can see, many of us are getting different builds. What I SUSPECT is the case, is people are rooting and changing their build.props and it's confusing the update procedure on some units. People who don't know the ups and downs of rooting have done just that. They've switched files and components, wpa supplicant files etc. and noone knows the exact process that the device/software users to grab an update. This is just complete speculation on my part, I updated fine and so did a friend of mine that owns it. I did not root, he did not root. We both got the same build of 3.1 and he got his weeks after I got mine.
The point of my message is this, post rumor or something in the title so people don't just read your message and run with it. Because down the line, people are going to quote your thread as well and then lots of people will think "Acer pulled the update!, what's wrong with the one it put out originally!?" and that isn't necessarily the actual case.

It does explain how I was able to get the update days ago, but now cannot.
Quick question: If the "No update Your device is up to date" window somehow managed to appear thousands of times in a relatively short period of time, is it possible that it will permanently burn itself into my display? Thanks for your help. (lol)

It absolutely does not. This happens on phones as well. If your device is showing an update and you decide to factory reset or even reboot before you download the update, there is a possibility that you're moved down a bit in the server queue.
It's very rare that it happen on a reboot, but it is def. possible if you do a factory reset. Any number of things can explain a stalled update, it doesn't at all mean Acer pulled it.
I'm still waiting for an official source...nothing so far on Acer's FB or anything like that. If anyone could provide one, that'd be great.
I just bought my new A500 yesterday. It is not rooted. When I connected to my home network for the first time, I received a message telling me that an update was available. I assumed it was the 3.1 that everyone was talking about. It downloaded and installed with nary a hitch. I got confirmation of successful update. After the update, I realized that I was having some of the same issues that others were talking about, namely a dodgy keyboard and the inability to activate CAPS Lock. It is then that I discovered that I had NOT received the 3.1 upgrade, but rather, something below. Here is what I found when I looked at Settings > About device.
Android Version: 3.0.1
Kernel Version: 2.6.36.3
Build Number: ACER_A500_1.141.07_COM_GEN1
Whatever version this is, it too is not quite ready for prime time. I hope they release a reliable update soon!
That is the Build that I had to be at before I was moved to Build Number ACER_A500_4.010.08_COM_GEN2 and VER 3.1.
Good luck with your new A500 hope you like it as much as I like mine.
ok, i just got off the phone with a senior acer tech, yes and actual technician not from india. So this should put your mind at ease. Acer sold more units then they expected and it resulted in google not having enough server to service all of the android devices. So for example acer put out 4 million units but there is only 3.7 million on the google registery as of yet. all the people including my self that have 2 units and one updated and on didn't will have to wait a little. PS the 3.1 update is loaded with bugs as well. Don't think it's the holy grail.
problems with 3.1 are less then 3.0.1 but they are there like random closes, slow downs even though it's doing nothing, late coming out of sleep and wifi issues and still no support for external hard drive, and most keyboards don't work.
all in all if you don't have it yet it's coming, if you do well wish and hope for 3.2 update soon like me

You're kidding - and after I got right royally slapped for saying exactly the same thing a month ago.
Just proves this place is chock full of fanbois.. (them, not you)
lolz @ mnaderi. my experience has been completely opposite. i've been on 3.1 for about a week now and it's waaaaay better than 3.0.1. the browser is much smoother and rarely ever force closes. hooked up my keyboard and mouse, no issues at all. hdmi out to my 1080p tv. everything is working great. i will admit it does have a few bugs here and there but compared to 3.0.1 it is a very nice improvement. i've had far less issues. i'm even using the stock launcher because i can resize the widgets now. was using launcher pro previously. all in all, a great update. still waiting for my mom's iconia to say its ready to be updated to 3.1. got the 1.141 update last night.
btw, i've never rooted my iconia. these things are too new, it's not worth rooting right now because the development is so weak. i'll give it another 6 months when we start seeing some really nice custom ROM's from some of the amazing developers on xda.

I have a 32GB with Firmware version 1.016.05_COM_GEN1 and I still have no OTA update when I check in the settings, anyone have this version get an update yet?
Got mine in Saskatchewan.. 32GB model purchased at BestBuy... Had to manually trigger the update though it didn't prompt me.
Thats wierd, mine still has no update when I check for updates. Guess I'll have to do the CWM way.
I had the update last night but then I haven't had any prompt for it today.
i just got the iconia yesterday from staples. Checked for updates and there is nothing yet. Some people are speculating that it's going by serial number.
Anyone know if this is true?
I'm still on 1.016.05 as well (32GB). Got my tablet about 2 weeks ago from Staples. No updates, never rooted or anything. I'm giving it a few more days before I try a manual upgrade.
Hi, I bought it at BestBuy in edmonton.
Just bought, I received an update to 1.139.04 (or 1.139.01 don't remember).
Three days ago I received the honeycomb 3.1 by OTA. Then... a strange thing
I had some problem so I lost all photos (my fault), so I returned back to the 3.01 (I did a backup before the update to 3.1) to try to recover the photos.
Then I was going to update a second time to 3.1 by OTA... but I couldn't!! My A500 was up to date!!! I still waiting a clarification...
PS
could some of you send me the original, stock recovery image (recovery.img)? Thank you very much
Picked one of these up today. Have checked for updates, but no updates available so far?
apparently there is an issue with the update not working properly and it has been postponed until tomorrow...
Got it here in Toronto.

For those that got the update, do you remember what build you were on prior to the update? Was anyone on 1.016.05 or something similar?
That was the build I was on when I bought it. I'm on 1.139.05 now. Regretted not taking the ota update for hc3.1.
I asked Acer why I was still on 1.016.05. Ignoring 3.1, I wanted to know why I never received a more recent 3.0.1 build such as 1.139.05 (which seems to be standard for Canada).
Their response was, "We are unable to determine why your unit has an older build and is not able to update. This is not a known issue." They suggest I do a factory reset. This isn't a big deal to me, the only thing I'm a bit concerned about is Angry Birds progress .
I'm wondering if anyone else is still on 1.016.05 in Canada, and am also wondering if anyone that installed 4.010.22_COM_GEN1 from vache's post in this forum have got any subsequent upgrades in Canada. (Post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1159443)
I have kept my A500 stock and unrooted, and prefer to leave it that way for now. Thanks.

That is extremely unusual. Once you're on 3.1, a factory reset should have kept you on 3.1. What I'm thinking is, perhaps you didn't pay full attention and assumed you went to 3.1 but that the update was an incremental one. That is, you went to another build of 3.0.1. Those on 1.016.x still have to go to 1.39.05, this is the version that gets updated to 3.1. I suspect that's what happened to you and you thought you got 3.1 but it wasn't.
All you have to do is wait, it will come.

I'm at 1.39.05 on my unit as well. The 3.1 OTA release has been MIA for at least a week now and nobody knows for sure when it's going to be available again. One user stated that Acer told him September which I hope isn't true. I really like my A500 and I think it's one of the best android tablets available even though most reviews seem biased against it. The 3.1 update has been a real sore point with this tablet though....

Don't get too excited. You can't root 3.2 yet.
I got the update this morning in Vancouver. If there is no root by the end of the weekend (I don't have my hopes up), then I'm downgrading. I need ad-hoc to work.
Got it last night in Nova Scotia.

Unfortunately it's too late for that for many of us...
When I upgraded I realized root may not work, but I always figured if it didn't I'd simply downgrade again and be ok... I never imagined that the downgrade wouldn't be possible either.
As my girlfriend said when I described it to her "who do they think they are? don't they know that you already paid for the device, it's not theirs anymore, why do they think they can still tell you what you can and can't do on it?" (Unfortunately I am not currently aware of any large technology company who believes that they actually sell you a device, they all think you merely rent it from them)

I'm in the same boat. Acer has always been pretty flexible, so I just assumed I'd be able to downgrade. Now I'm stuck.
This could likely be my last Acer product. Not that that carries any weight, considering how many returns they had on the initial run of the A500, which didn't appear to bother them that much. (Have you tried the new A500's, or the refurbs? The GPS actually works!)
I understand that they don't want us mucking around with these types of things, in order to keep themselves from getting flooded with warranty and service calls from the idiots who bricked their tablet, but they often adopt the wrong attitude. It's like some irrational need to police what people do with a product, after they bought and paid for it. I'm not sure why consumer electronics differ from any other purchased property (cars, houses, appliances, etc). I wish they would understand that they do not still own my tablet.
Then again, we did choose to install the update. It wasn't exactly forced on us. So maybe we're the idiots.
-PW
Every android device I had was not able to be downgraded. Not just acer. Ask the people who upgraded their EVO 4G to gingerbread. If your expecting to root you should always way until their is a rooted ROM available and never accept ota

I am happy that the new update seems to have made things smoother, but I am still getting the odd crash from apps like Dolpin Browser which is highly annoying, especially when I am in the middle of typing somthing big and then it FC's on me and I lose everything.
was in update loop
Dunno if this happened to anyone else. The tablet kept downloading the update and failing. I downloaded 3.2 update at least 8 times. The solution was to reset the tablet and then apply the update.
I've read its likely due to incompatible apps.
I'm happily on 3.2 now.
Does someone have the link to Acer for this update? If so please post the link.
Thanks

No link, however a couple of us captured the update as it came in to our tablets, and have you can find the files here
A couple things.
I am still on 3.1 but this is because i patched for Netflix.
Now the device thinks it's a Xoom on 3.2 (which it is not, as we all know).
First question is has anyone tried Netflix with the update?
I'll search for it but does anyone have the original file that the netflix patch replaced?
I can't remember what it's called so it's difficult to search for it
Hmmm sounds like ill stay on 3.1

This plain sucks
Try to wipe the system, is easy - hold down the volume up, keep ... hold down the power button, hold, and when appears ACER, cringe-screen lock back and forth .... see the caption in the upper left corner of the screen, the tablet automatically goes into reboot and as soon as appears ACER, pinch and hold the power button to turn off completely devaysa .... then repeat the whole procedure twice more. After the last wipe carve plate holding the power button, and from off his run on the firmware of the stock by holding the volume down rekaveri power button ... update.zip course you should already be on the microSD root. After the firmware again and then do a wipe already use 3.2.1 ... Next install ICONIA TAB Update Enhancement and wait for the arrival of ICS.
I heard the update was pulled out as there were a lot of complaints, not sure if this is true...though.

hi everyone,
just received this update version in Australia and it seems to be fine, no issues at all with WiFi or home screen, have tested all the apps and seems to be good.
i noticed acer withdraw all the updates for about a week, which i think they went back and fixed all the bugs in the package then re-released it just recently again.
so from my end all good to update to this version with this file name from acer.
Acer_A500_041.203.01_COM_GEN1
thanks!
All I can say is your bloody lucky...... its the 14th May here and STILL no ICS update. Seriously thinking of selling the bloody thing and switching to a different brand.....Acer's customer support is non existant.
I also think your lucky, I am thinking of going back to Honeycomb, wifi comes on when it decides, some apps do not run, cant see any improvements in ICS ota.

If you are experiencing issues after an ICS upgrade then you should carry out a factory reset (as stated many times in here). I updated to ICS three weeks ago and am experiencing absolutely no issues whatsoever.

Done that prior to ICS download, unfortunately it took me days to reload over 100 apps including games that required to be re downloaded, tried backup but that only backed up original apk,so looking into a backup prog that will give me more before trying again, any suggestions
