Hey guys,
I have been browsing this forum extensively for the past two days and must say there is wealth of resources here and lot of knowledge sharing.
However I find that most of the threads are bit on the steep side for a Windows mobile novice like me to understand. I just got a new HD2 few days back.
Can some one please give a one line meanings of below terms and if possible links on this site or elsewhere that can give a lay mans definition. Once I got a hang of the terms then I can go around on my own. I am sure there are many like me.
- HSPL (I saw the main HSPL thread but does not explain what is HSPL)
- Flashing
- Cooked ROM, stock ROM
- Radio
- SPL
Thanks in advance.

Hi and welcome!
You might want to read this wiki:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=SPL Questions?
It should cover all of the above (it is designed for a non-HD2 device, but the explanations aren't dependant on model).

"HSPL" or "Hard SPL" is a bootloader. What this means is that it's software that goes on your phone which is invoked as the phone loads, and from there loads the operating system and/or presents and executes other advanced functions.
The default bootloader is "locked" so that only signed ROMs can be flashed. HSPL un-"locks" this so you can flash any ROM.

"Flashing" refers to writing to ROM. When you "flash" a phone you write a new operating system to its ROM.

A "stock" ROM is one distributed and/or made by the OEM. A "cooked" ROM is one distributed and/or made by a non-OEM.
The ROMs you can download from HTC's site are "stock".
The ROMs you can download in the ROM forum are "cooked".

A bootloader for the phone. The "H" in "HSPL" means "Hard" meaning it's un-"locked".
Great responses.
rp-x1,
Thats precisely the kind of url I was looking for. It explains fair bit on SPL. Are there any other pages here, perhaps one which is indexed or a step by step tutorials going further into flashing and explaining other terms?
Spike 15,
Thanks for the definitions.
So I understand that 'flashing' is a Winmo term for actually changing the core rom.
If i relate it to Windows terminology, then I guess ROM in WinMo is similar to set of custom dll, exe's in Windows that affects the core OS.
Also, what is a signed and unsigned ROM? I know in Symbian we have signed and unsigned apps but they can be self signed, I guess this must be something similar.
- Is installing HSPL (the one on this forum) recommended?
- How would I determine that I need to upgrade or change to another ROM be it stock or cooked?
For e.g. I tried installing the new HTC rom from their website but I got an invalid vendor id. I believe that is because my phone is locked to T Mobile UK. Would HSPL + a WWE ROM unlock the phone?
Thanks again.

Bringing up thread.
Can someone please respond?
Should I really install HSPL or a Soft SPL?
If it is HSPL can I use the one given on this
link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=611433
Should i use the HSPL.zip and HSPL2_RUN.zip ?
I am locked to T Mobile but want to use O2, will Hard SPL allow me to do that? Means if I do HSPL and then flash a WWE rom
Thanks
Metal,
Before you do anything there has been early Tmobile USA hd2's out there so i have to ask... do you have a hd2 from europe or from USA.
the new TMobile USA hd2 has SPL 2.X.X, the hspl you see around is for the europe one and WILL NOT work on TMO USA HD2.
U asked if it was recommended... well it does void the warranty... but you can go backwards if needed to send into repairs, but that scares some people in to even attempting this for a 500-800 dollar device.
Now away from that part of it, yes unlocking your phone allows you to flash these "cooked" roms into your phone... which by theory will make your phone work faster, better, and do things it "should have" out the box. There are normally little treats as well as built in software that makes your experience better because you don't have to load on apps and slow down your phone because they are already "cooked" into the ROM.
Boredtonite,
Thanks for the reply.
I am on T Mobile UK, so I assume that it is the European version.
I had a look at few vids on youtube regarding flashing and then reverting it back, so it does not look that difficult to me.
Only thing that I want to know is if I should do it, if yes which is the correct version I should use.
Can anyone provide me the link to the correct version of HSPL that I should use for my T Mobile UK phone
Also once I run that is it recommended if I flash the HTC wwe rom from its website?
Hi Frinds my phone model num is t3320
i want to know that
all touch2 rom is compertabel for my device???????????
if not then how i update my phone rom??????????????/
Difference is that your phone does not have 3G or GPS. No reason why custom Rom's should not work.
So to flash a new Rom back-up your current Rom (see specific thread), apply hard SPL and select the Rom you like.....
Have fun.
Actually, one of the best ROMs I found here is based on your model. This one : New [ROM] [6.5.3_23541_WWE_Radio_3.53.25.20], uploaded by TangerineTractor. It's awesome and I recommend it to you. I'm using it now and it has only minor bugs that you/I can live with and although my model is T3333 after I flashed this ROM, my device says T3320 but everything works well. Try it!
You need to Hard SPL before you can install new ROM
But... there is no Hard SPL for T3320 until now
I already try T3333 hard SPL from Jockey on my T3320... but it not work!

Hello All,
As for Addicted2Xda, the HSPL worked for my device (T3320) too & that too in first go.
I dont know much about these things & this is the first device that I own. I verified the procedure & my device in the tri-color screen reads 1.28.Hard on the LHS side. So i believe that HSPL has worked. The only way to confirm that this works is to load a custom ROM(which i am ready to load) but before that I would like to
1. Backup my current ROM (i.e. the original one from HTC so that in event of any issue, i can claim warranty)
2. In case the custom ROM doesnt flash or work, I can load the original one.
Now I, dont know the procedure, requirements, pre-req on how to do it & hence I would like your expert help in this matter. I am ready to do it, its just that i dont know how to do it & I would like to learn.
So is it possible, for someone to post the stepwise procedure to
1. Backup the current ROM.
2. Load the custom ROM.
For our device Model T3320. I also have a reason to specify "our device Model T3320" in every request simply becaue I, have read most of the thread there & found out that there is much misleading information about this device T3320 here. For e.g. in some threads you find that the HSPL is not working in some you find that it works & other things.
My aim (request or what ever you call it) in humble manner, is to make it easy for guys like me (who are new / dumb at this) to use this beautiful forum, in much better manner.
It is possible that, my aim has already been achieved & I am doing something wrong (probably since I have not read all the rules), in which case I am due for a butt-whipping from all the senior members, which i am ready to take, provided, it becomes easy for guys like me to use this forum.
Long post, you all can thrash me for it & i would gladly take the heat, but please consider my reqeust.
Regards,
H.D
Great job HD.... i am also sailing in the same ship with you. T3320 is my first Windows mobile, there are a lot of doubts and confusions with the device.
Most of the terms used in this site are complete jargons to me, it would be great if someone comes forward to enlighten newbies like us.
If you have Hard SPLed your phone, just make sure that your boot loader shows 1.28.Hard (meaning you have successfully HSPLed your device). Luckily you do not need to backup your original ROM as it is already available in the Roll up thread . WWE Asia is your ROM (if you are an Asian that is ).
if your HSPL shows as 1.28.Hard, you can flash any custom ROM you feel like. Just give a few of them a shot, you are bound to like one of them .
Once I flashed my ROM with a custom ROM, never bothered to revert to the Original crap, be it my Vox, my Gene or my Mega.
BTW if you are really interested to know the methods / jargons (well some of them), just pm me and I will be glad to help you - but please note that I have a real job, so it will take some time .

1. How can i roll up to original ROM after flashing a new one?
2. Will the warranty be violated if i flash it?

Once you hardspl your device, your warranty is void.. unless you find a way to put the original spl back on your device... whether you flash a custom ROM or not is immaterial.
But please note that it is my personal opinion, but:
1. I have a Vox for nearly 4 years now... never needed to send it to service centre... only had to change the battery once... that too last year.
2. I had a Gene for more than 1.5 years and sold it to a friend of mine (who used it for 6 months till he lost it)... without a glitch.
3. Using my touch2, flashed it within 1 month without caring for the world (BTW I am not a millionaire... if I was, I would go for TP2 ).
If you want to try new stuff... you have to take the risk.
Best of luck in enjoying your Touch2 right now... or waiting for the warranty to get over
Hey.. Please, can I anyone Help me out and tell me, is there any way flashing ROM through Memory Card.. I have read somewhere on XDA..
I had HTC GENE(P3400i), And I flashed that many times.. But now I'm using HTC Touch2 (T3320 Special Version).. And I want to flash this too..
My Problem is.. Someone told me that after flashing my Touch2 I won't be able to play FM Radio.. Is it TRUE.?
And Please tell me the Procedure by which I can safely Flash my ROM..
First, make HSPL to hack the phone, second choose a ROM from all of the roms in this section, you can put it via data cabel.

Hmmm well try searching the forum. If that doesn't help, i'm sure I saw a stock T-mobile rom somewhere...HSPL will allow you to install the T-Mobile rom back onto the device. Go to T-mobile's website, i'm sure they've released an update for the HD2, you can flash that back onto the HD2. And remember to remove HSPL when you send your device back if something happpens. Hope I helped
Thanks yeah. I guess the better question is the update they released on the tmobile website is that suffecient since thats just an update?
go to t mobile section, click rom development thread, one of the top 4 or 5 threads (its a sticky) is called [rom] leo 1.5 test and stock roms or something like that, in there is a list of roms from 2.0 right up to 2.13 (stay away from those below 2.10, just for safety, some of them have dodgy spl's)
the two you should take note of are 2.10.0 and 2.13. Theyre the two stock roms that the tmous shipped with. (the 2.10.1 in that folder isnt an official stock rom, your phone will see it as a cooked rom)
Ahhh Awesome. Thanks. So if I need to send it back I uninstall the hspl and when I install the stock rom the spl is automatically put back?

depends which is your stock
if its 2.10
install the 2.10.0 stock from usb, then run hspl1024 and choose 2.08.0000
if its 2.13
run hspl1024 and choose 2.08.0000 and THEN flash the 2.13 stock from usb.
for 2.10 you can do it either way round, remove hspl first and then flash the stock, or flash teh stock then remove hspl. (because it's stock, it doesnt need hspl) for 2.13 however you must remove hspl first, because you need to flash back to spl 2.10.0000 and hspl1024 doesn't support that, so when you flash 2.13 if hspl is NOT installed then your spl will be upgraded to 2.10.0000, but if you leave hspl installed it wont remove it, and you will need to downgrade again so you can remove it, then upgrade again, lol.
my ROM is 2.13 and spl i suppose is 2.10
So who was being snotty to you. I answered all these questions in your last thread about the same thing. I ever went so far to link you to everything.
i felt a few of your replies were kinda anotty in assuming i didn't read any of the threads or didn't do searches. just to clear it up i spent weeks looking around reading before i decided to sign up and ask not because i was lazy to read but because i didn't understand it too much. also a few other people i felt were a little rude in assuming that i would be doing all of this with no computer.
Sorry if people come off that way but the information is there and it tends to get asked a lot and answered just as much so people tends to get tired of answering the same thing over and over.
I'll apologize for everybody. Sorry if we came off rude. Like I said it's all there I linked to what you needed in the other thread. I understand it can be frustrating to try and find information that doesn't contradict itself from thread to thread. The last thing you want to do is brick an expensive phone.
So you'll want to download HSPL2-sync the phone on the computer-run HSPL-follow instruction
Once that is done go into T-Mobile rom section - download one of the NRG roms( can't go wrong with his for your first flash)- unzip and put the file LEOIMG.nbh into the main directory of the memory card - turn off the phone and put into bootloader - hit the power button to load the rom - done........
Hope that helps and simplifies things for ya.
its alright man i understand there are idiots that don't read. i know my problem is with my browser the search doesn't show up so if it doesn't come up in google i don't find it. i did read though i gotta downgrade my stockrom in order to get to spl 2.08
yep HSPL 2.08 then Hard HSPL 2.08
cool cool. I sent a pm to nrgz and asked him personally to make sure the rom I chose will work but no reply I think he might have a crap ton of messages and wont read it. Waiting to see if someone will let me know. it's the gtx themed energy leo rom for 1024
Which one are you looking at I can tell you or tell you which one is the right one with the same options.
Did you have a chance to run HSPL yet?
he is talking about the gtx version of this one:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=591784
Yep it will work with no issue. Though using that one will not have any of the preloaded T-Mobile programs. As long as you know that.
Hello Everyone,
I need some help and I would appreciate some feedback. Hope I wouldn't have to bore you with a lot of questions here. I just bought an HTC HD2 mobile phone (Model: T8585) WinMo 6.5 Professional with the following software specs:
SPL: SPL 1.66.0000 XE
ROM Version: 1.72.162.0 GER
Radio : 2.07.61.22_2
Protocol Version: 15.32.50.07U
OS Version: 5.2.21869
The problem is that the OS is in German and I want to change this to English. The phone is not locked to any network. I can use any mobile operator's simcard. In fact, I am currently using O2 simcard, although I bought the phone from vodafone germany. The thing is that it looks like the hardware is locked to vodafone's custom german OS, I tried to install an english OS and it failed with an error like "invalid ID" or something. I have read through a few threads here but I thought of explaining my situation here first before proceeding with anything.
So my first question is, can I use the HSPL3 in this case and what kind of ROM will I be able to flash my htc hd2 with after HSPL3? Secondly, can I still maintain my radio software without flashing a new one after hspl3? Thirdly, what's the difference between a cooked rom and a stock rom? Lastly, when a phone is bricked, does it also mean the phone is dead? Can a dead phone be reversed?
I am sorry but I'm a little bit new with HTC. It's my first smartphone actually The first 2 questions are the most important of all.
Thank you and I look forward to hearing from you
Bisoo
Dear user, first of all welcome on xda.
Secondly tray to use the search option, so the next time you don't need to wait till someone answer you.
A lot of new users have mostly the same question, so the answer was alreddy bean given in the past.
But okay, Now I'm replaying your questions, way not help you out.
About your question if you like to stay on stock Rom, but you will have a other language take a look on this thread, read and follow the instructions and all will become Okay.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=642486
Fore your latest question about the deferent between Stock Rom and Custom Rom, well the there are deferent builders, but the idea is the same. building a Rom with the latest packaging and build on the needs of the followers.
So you will see and find lot of different, the biggest different between the custom Rom's is style!
Take a look on this thread fore finding custom Rom's and read the sticky threads first! there is a lot of usfull information on it.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=534
Fore replaying your question about HSPL, this will depends of your choice of your Rom, some Rom builders will advice you to use HSPL2 (1.66) some will advice you HSPL3 2.08, ... it depends of the Rom, and the conclusion of the Rom builder based on his test's.
I hope you have now some more information,
Best
Kurt

this method will work, but requires making a gold card which isn't free.
much easier to use hspl and then flash a stock rom in your preferred language.
if i were the op i would
1 install hspl2,(hspl3 offers nothing that hspl2 can't do, hspl3 is not "better" or a higher version, it just supports tmous phones, that's all. hspl2 is more useful to regular hd2 users.)
choose either 1.66.hspl or 2.08.hspl, doesn't really matter, you can change it whenever you like.
2 flash the rom of your choice.
you can also search for UK serial and download and flash the latest rom that way, again a search will find all you need
I am so pleased with your feedback. I guess I should have taken some time to go through all the threads on this site, instead of creating a thread which has questions which have already been answered on older threads. But I appreciate your responses
I have to admit that whoever created Hspl is just genius. I followed hspl3 installation guide and now I have been able to flash an European stocked WWE ROM (english) on my german carrier ROMed HTC. I took the S/N from one of the links Kurt provided. It's perfect now, although I am still a bit cautious and hoping nothing happens to my phone. I read a few scary threads here where some people, after some days, complained that their phones died after flashing with hspl. But I have the feeling that if one follows the steps correctly and consider the requirements keenly, probably nothing will happen. That's what I did.
Thanks a lot to you and all the guys who've contributed one way or the other on this site. I am sure I'll be back, maybe not with questions but contributions Thank you so much.

Just wanted to thankyou all for helping me last week. and to the guy who took the piss, ask for help and I got none. so thankyou to u all, yes thankyou for the £20 charge I got from HTC for for sending my phone back to get it repaired under warranty, then not getting it repaired at all and still having to pay, because they say there was custom ROM on it even though i put a stock ROM on. so thankyou all again tossers
Stock rom over USB doesn't remove Hspl. That's the only way you could have a stock rom and them still be able to tell.
If you are convinced the spl was correct, then they played you just to see how you reacted.
no, thank you for searching and reading the plethora of threads on how to remove HSPL and flash a stock ROM on your phone. Don't blame us because you decided not to read, all you would have had to do is take a picture of your bootloader and ask if that looks like stock, someone would have set you straight.
If you go around blaming others for your mistakes then you can never really take responsibility for your own actions and your life will be a cold, grim, sordid affair.
ruminate on it.

Yes if you did not flash it via SD card then you needed to manually change HSPL back to SPL via the DFT HSPL Utility. Sorry you were miss informed my friend.
Edit: Are you 100% sure you flashed the correct stock ROM for your HD2? Also like Orangekid said you can only truly blame yourself as there is a crap load of threads covering this exact subject. Remember information is key, and Knowledge is power.
i removed HSPL 2.08 and put on SPL 2.08. i put on a stock WWE rom but they said that the phoen was branded to Virgin, but I know that the phone accepted any sim card
I used HSPL 3 to remove hspl and put spl on

Well, do you know which SPL comes with the Virgin branded phone? You can't just downgrade to ANY spl, it has to match with what the carrier was using at the time.
anyways i think I am going to get rid of the phone when i get it back and just get a phone with android. the phone battery life is just crap, thinking of gettin the samsung galaxy apollo if I can find somewhere to get in unlocked
the thing is i thought that the spl could be upgraded anyway with newer ROMs that came out
Spl 2.x are stock for tmous phones only. Also, the phone being network unlocked means nothing, mines unlocked but a wwe rom would be unauthorized because the phone is branded, so only o2 roms will be valid.
For others reading this when you get told "flash stock rom", the safest way is use only the rom the HTC website lets you grab using your serial.
If you plan to remove Hspl using Hspl.exe, match versions, rom 1.4 spl 1.42.0000 rom 1.6 1.7 spl 1.66.0000 rom 3.14 spl 3.03.0000
There are NO regular hd2s with spl 2.x

Yes this is true this is why I thionk it is best for people to go back to stock by just flashing via SD card as not only does it revert everything, but not everyone knows what SPL version the need for their HD2. Also you have to remember if you have to revert back to SPL 3.10.0000 you have to use the SD card method has SPL 3.10.0000 is not included in HSPL 4.

I get the same out of both winmo and android. Then again, both my custom roms on winmo and android are very bareboned. They're stripped of apps that I dont use, even google apps.

In that case you chose the wrong spl in Hspl.exe
Mines been back to service twice, both times flashed USB then Hspl.exe to remove Hspl, but you gotta match spl ver to the rom you load.

I personally still think it is better to revert back to stock via SD card as far as for warranty proposes. Cause not only does it revert everything at one time. But most people have no clue as to what the right SPL version they need is. Also HSPL does not have SPL 3.10.0000 in it so flashing via SD card is the only way to get it nack as of right now.
Edit: Sorry for the double post but as so many people were posting in this thread I thought my first post did not get through asa I did not see it at first LOL Sorry again.

That's fine but if you root the phone and flash a recovery, bootloader, splash screen, custom ROM, and/or kernel you better read up on how to return it to stock if you send it in to Samsung on warranty
also fyi I get a full day of action on my CM7 build running off SD and same with my WP7 running off NAND, your poor battery may have come from you radio, your kernel, your sd card (if you were running an SD build), your ROM, your cpu scaling settings, and/or your general usage, so I wouldn't blanket "poor battery usage" on the phone itself.

I have absolutely no sympathy for you.
This is a perfect example of somebody who doesn't do enough research and expects all the correct answers to be given to him.
If you had used common sense and done a bit of research you could have EASILY reverted to proper stock for you warranty to pass, there is no excuse as there is plenty of info available to you here.
You couldn't be bothered so its your own fault nobody elses.
Cry to mom, she may get you a Nokia 3310, which would be a much more suitable phone.

My battery life is excellent. 2-4mA on standby.
Its a common misconception that battery life is bad in general which it simply is not. I grant you that there is a few custom roms with bugs that cause high battery useage but they are in the minority.
Aslong as you do a clean install (task29 etc) and flash a good rom you are fine.
Again, you just haven't done enough research.
PS. If you think going to a native Android device will give you alot more battery life you are mistaken, even native Android uses as much battery as the HD2 does.
"Just wanted to thankyou all for helping me last week. and to the guy who took the piss, ask for help and I got none."
The second reply in your "help me" post was correct
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=12540476&postcount=3
" just flash your Stock ROM via SD card and you will be good to go for warranty."
and he even included a link to the tutorial on how to do it. (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=681317)
But you decided otherwise.
Sad, but no ones fault but yours.
there are posts missing from that thread. also after the guy was taking the piss I didnt bother coming back to look at other posts as I thought thats all i was going to get (people taking the piss)
