Bought another phone with keyboard - G1 General

Just bought an HTC desire Z with android 2.3.3 (stock).
It's like 10-20 times faster than my old dream. 160MB free ram with Sense (Without it will be better). The difference is really so awesome, no need for a dual core phone at all !
I'm keeping the G1 for experiments (IP camera, ...).
The keyboard from the G1 is still better than on the desire Z.

Upgrade to Desire HD from normal Desire

Is it worth it? I have a nice offer to buy a Desire HD afterwards I would sell my normal Desire.
My issue is if its worth the upgrade and the extra money? I really like the bigger screen from the Desire HD but the development is not as advanced as on the normal Desire.
Rooting and S-Off is apparently harder than on the normal desire and I dont see many roms on the development section.
I know the device is pretty new and this will come as time goes by.
Just post your thoughts what would you do.
Upgraded to DHD from wildfire here and got addicted to the HD screen. Totally worth it..
Easy S-Off with Easy Radio tool v2_2 and rooting with visionary. Mine asia 1.72 but no problem rooting it.
I had the Wildfire also the wildfire has a crapy display no match for the desire amoled display that I am on right now.
If I had the wildfire I would do it right away but from desire to desire hd is the upgrade not all that stunning.
Still I love the 4,3" screen and the looks of the new desire HD. But technicaly is it worth it?

I assume the battery on Desire lasts longer. DHD's battery might be a large factor to weigh out before cashing out...

I'm one of people who upgraded from desire to desire HD. In term of battery. With the last update, I found that HD have improve a lot.
Even with out software update. I still happy with new HD compare to the desire.

came from an hd2 here...
definetely worth it. ok mine got swapped, so no costs for me
but i'm really happy.
i would compare your phone with a dhd..maybe a friend has one or go to a shop..
and then choose
DN41
i just bought a desire HD, im still deciding if i should sell my desire, the main reasons im upgrading is the bigger nand on the HD and the multi touch, im sick of the crappy axis flipping on the desire i hope its worth it
Thanks I already tested the HD2 and the Desire HD and I like the bigger screen much better. The swap wouldnt cost me that much.
Had desire and swapped for hd. Totally worth it. Bigger internal memory (finally can install whatever I want without worrying about space) bigger screen which in my case is not a deal breaker. Multitouch its not 5 point touch but does the job nicely. Try game "slice it" on normal desire and hd difference is incomparable. And I know it's going to sound funny battery. It last longer than on normal desire with superpower app. Ohh and ability to swap sim without taking battery. There are some flaws but they are small and I got use to it. Which is quite could not say about normal desire...

I am lucky enough to have both.
Had my desire for about 4 months before i got the dhd and i was very impressed ... the difference between the two phones is alot more noticeably than what i anticipated.
Hardware wise it is definitely worth it, my battery life seems to be the same on both devices.
At the moment i use the dhd as my full-time phone, i am by no means in a hurry to root or start playing around with the software, for me as an 'out-of-the-box' phone its perfect.
I rooted my desire within a month of getting it and havnt looked back since ... at the moment its my favorite toy as i basically do as much to it as possible!
I came from a nexus one running a sense port which is practically a desire for all intents and purposes. I upgraded because of the camera, the bigger flash memory (apps2sd is far from an ideal fix) and the locations software. Not everyone likes locations but I've found it very good.
I don't think the battery is that much worse than the nexus one, it lasts me thru the day with plenty to spare on most occasions and I recharge every night.
The phone is also noticeably faster it has more RAM and a better gpu.
At the time of purchase the size of the HD wasn't a selling point. I remember looking at it in the shop and thinking it was a bit too big. Now I've grown to love the big screen, it just makes touch input that much more accurate. Thankfully its nicely curved and thin so it doesn't feel that much bigger in my pocket.
I would say go for it - you will still get a good resale price for the desire so you won't be out of pocket as much as it may seem.

Desire HD or HTC HD2

I want to buy a new smartphone. What is the best?
Is there other options because those phones are both nice but there are newer ones with dual core about the same price as those phones. If you want versatility then the HD2 is the phone for you. if you want pure android from the door and dont really want the hassle of messing around then I would go withe the Desire HD. I have the HD2 and i love the phone alot of development for it but it is getting old. I would go with the Desire HD.
czarsuperstar......... Define versatility.
Uh...
Desire HD has newer CPU and GPU.
So... Desire HD/

Grip of death issue on the Sensation...and the nail to the coffin for the Sensation is that other brands do offer better per dollar value...such as SGSII. lol.
Between HD2 and Desire HD, go with the Desire HD, its a far newer phone with improved CPU and GPU as well as other small tweaks such as the camera, most importantly, a far more superior operating system...HD2 had a lot of issues with the digitaliser...

If I were you I would not consider hanging with these phones. Though very popular phone but...I would put 10% more on the top of my budget n bought the new dual core phones like sensation or GS2.
I got DHD now. I like it but there are couple of other phones more powerful, better GPU and better battery life.
Decision is yours: If no last options I would prefer DHD far better specs than HD2
My wife has Samsung Galaxy. Everything just seems to 'work' on that phone compared to my HD. Dont be blinkered into choosing an HTC phone based on past glories.

I'm also tempted to buy a S2 galaxy.
People b*tch about it being plastic but you have very good plastic and bad metal if you know what I mean, as long as the chassis is sturdy.
Also rf-signals (gps, wifi, bt and gsm (still a phone)) pass through plastic more easily than metal.
For one I would not buy a HD2 anymore if it would be your only phone.
Like someone said, hardware issues. Head down to the hd2 forum and you will see loads of people complaining about bad blocks, digitizers etc. things that are not really replacable etc.
As being a 'toy' phone then yes the HD2 is fantastic.
I now have the DHD but I'm still not sure that I like it. I also have a ZTE blade (yes the cheap thing) and it beats the DHD in wifi, gps and loudspeaker (as being able to hear something not like a tweeter on the DHD)
The DHD on the other hand is faster, has a better camera (still seeing pink spot, check a grey wall and bump up colour and contrast) and larger screen (did I say that the ZTE screen was brighter also?).
So it all depends on your needs.
I would love to testdrive a couple of phones and compare them for a week.
There are 2 things about SGS2 which wins over Sensation. It's Super Amoled bright screen and it's light weight!
Downside: very cheap looking phone! seems like bought from a $2.00 shop lol
Sensation: It's got sense 3.0 because it make sense! a bit lagging If I'm not wrong my DHD runs smoother than HTC sensation. > May be they have fixed with the new update!
NOT to overwhelm OP with these ideologies . Ya should have these things in mind before buying your SMART PHONE. Or else you'll end up regrating. Now we say HD2 is old 2,3 months later you'll say to Sensation or GS2. It's all Money and Marketing but on top of that you should consider your own needs and requirements from a smart phone.

I have been a member of the HD2 section of this forum for over a year, and until last week i owned 2 x HD2 phones.
Trust me.....get a HTC Desire!!!!
Owned my desire for a week and it's BRILLIANT compared to HD2 problems.
matt
As few have mentioned the DHD has better hardware spec than the HD2.
What nobody has mentioned though is the screen is way better on the DHD especially in terms of accuracy of typing, thats what i've found anyway...
If they are your only 2 choices defo the DHD in my experience...
DHD is better than HD2,they are uncomparable, but why not another newer and more powerful dual core phone? The two of them are out of fashion now.
I think the Desire HD is still a very good phone compared to the newer generation phones (SGS2, Sensation) and a viable option. It depends on what features you need though.
Why?
-Dualcore does not bring any real advantages right now. When apps really profit from it there will be better phones. + it usually uses more power than singlecore.
So the speed improvement compared to a DHD is very minimal and probably not noticable in general.
-DHD has one of the best custom rom support. From different Sense 2.1 and Sense 3 roms to Cyanogen or MIUI variations you can flash what you want on your DHD. Custom roms on the newer phones are still in early developement.
-Software from both SGS2 and Sensation isnt quite there imho. Touchwiz is well... touchwiz, and SGS2 has some problems with 3d games and overheats sometimes. And somehow the sensation just doesnt feel that smooth (i had the feeling sense 3 on my DHD runs smoother^^) we can only hope updates will correct that.
I could go on. But in my opinion upgrading from a DHD to one of the newer phones is something you should only do if you have more than enough money on your bank.
But you're in another situation. You need a new phone and if money is an issue i think the DHD is still a good option (forget the HD2 its just too old). Its not without flaws but neither are the newer phones.
I will stick to my DHD for at least another year. But if I would be in your spot(and money wasnt an issue) right now id probably go for the Sensation with a good custom rom (they should be out soon with the bootloader unlocked now).
The SGS2 is very good, but there are some things that are dealbrakers for me. For example the screen. Everyones praising it to heaven but i think its just awefull to look at^^ Colors are way off. And stuff mentioned above..

Ah, I'm not alone in thinking that then? Full brightness, looks fine - anything less and the SGSII has a green tint to it. Yuck.
I've got a Desire HD; works very well for me - all the better for rooting and putting on Cyanogen instead of Sense!

And not enough ram is also a big problem

I find the legend to be a great phone. Not the fastest phone but it gets the job done in a small metallic package. I'm afraid we will not see to many 3.2 inch phones in the future...the trend is really big displays now. I guess i'll just have to settle with 3.7 inch.

I love my Legend, It's better than my wifes Wildfire and more stylish than the other phones. Best of all, it's mine and I can do what I want too it and it does what I require just as well as my friends Desire HD or sensation, the difference is theirs is a bit quicker
HTC need to come out with the Legend S in a few months, I think it should have these specs: 4.3"/4.5" screen, 2Ghz quad core, 1Gb Ram, 32Gb on board with SD slot for more, along with the usual wifi/BT/Radio etc
That'll make it a Legendary phone

I hope too!!
Darn you all
Problem with being in Canada is that it's one of the most expensive countries for a cell phone plan in the world. We don't have 2-year contracts, our max is 3. And if you try to land on a 1- or 2-year committment, it wouldn't be as economically wise as to buy it outright, which I did, but regret.
Wildfire S here is $250, Galaxy Gio is $70, Legend was bought for $400. Oh noes. So that means I'll be lugging this device here for another year after you all move on (it's no-contract, but it's the prime time where I actually earn enough cash to actually spend it on another mobile device).
Unless, you know, I win the lottery.
I disagree. Legend is a great phone.
Do not think rooting a Legend is hard challenge. The custom ROMs are also very good.
Not to mention the design - the aluminium block is one of the best smartphone exterior I have ever seen!
And the display size - it's not the biggest in the smartphone portfolio, but it's still pocket size, which I think is great. After all, I want phone, not tablet for my jeans..
I've had my Legend for 10 months now, Best ruddy phone I've ever owned, I've owned about 12-13 phones over the past 10 years, this one is the best, "for me". It may not be the fastest phone, it may not have the most memory, it may not have the biggest screen, it doesn't have a dual core, but thats fine by me.
When I got my phone, I really loved HTC sense, Eclair and Froyo, which I loved even more, how ever, now that I have rooted my phone and seen what's out there in the way of alternative roms, I must now admit, the stock HTC with sense rom really lets this phone down, hell, Blay0's rooted version of Froyo is awesome.
My opinion is at the end of the day, the hardware is great and it really all comes down to the ROM, and the stock HTC is a bit of a fail....
Oh BTW, the physical size of the Legend is also a winner for me, my wife has a desire HD, ruddy thing doesn't even fit in my hand comfortabily!
I have my Legend over a year and its (except a small screen) the realy legend! its survived a lot of thig, with a two scratches only on the body.
now i have HD2, and now take care to not fall even with two feet :S
Legend isn't bad, it's just an old mid-range phone ...
it has everything I need for my daily activities in addition to handy size.
I don't need anything better for now.

[Q] it makes sense to buy the desire z now?!

Hi all, I'm not new in the android world.
I had a t-mobile htc g1 that now is borken, I don't know if I should buy now an htc desire z for 220€ or if I should wait some time.
I know that android ice-cream will be available in october-november, so I'm afraid that the old terminal will be devalued, and I'm afraid about the compatibilities of android 4.0 with the htc desire Z.
The desire Z is beautiful, but the specifications are not excellent for the standard of this days (no dual core, "only" 512mb of ram, not really good camera).
I love olso myTouch4g slide, cause it have the specifications of a new phone (dual core, 768mb of ram) and the keyboard.
The problem of MT4Gs is the keyboard, that is said is not good.. droid 3 have the problem of the ram (only 512 for a dual core), of the software (motorblur..) and the screen that is a simple LCD (the minor problem).
So my question is:
1) Wait for new devices after the launching of android 4.0 or bu now a device?
2) Desire z will be updated to android 4.0?
3) If I decide to buy now a device, what to buy?? (Desire z vs mytouch4g slide vs droid3)
(I'm Italian, but I can buy droid3/MT4GS from the USA on ebay and use in europe)
Thanks

1) well youu can get some of the newer devices now because they will probably be upgradable to ics
2) most likley not. But the community will port it anyways and you will soon find tons of roms wjith ics as the base
3) i would say droid 3 is the best. it has pretty good specs and its design looks good. The mt4g looks real bad. If you dont **** motoblur, then you can just flash another rom. Also it only has 512mb of ram because the motoblur skin is pretty lightweight.

I hope that ics will not need of more ram and CPU/GPU to run smoothly... :\
The problem of droid 3 is the ram. The only better thing of droid 3 is the CPU dual core.. it really feels the need of a dual core??
The desireZ keyboard is perfect, droid 3 is perfect too but in another way.
Droid 3 screen is bigger and have more resolution, but is tft..
So droid 3 has better processor, screen (but tft) and camera but no sense (before a good port of sense we have to wait a lot I think)
MT4Gs has better processor, perfect camera(!!), more ram, but worse qwerty.. that is important for a qwerty device. (and yes, is ugly... it seems a toy )
And desire Z is cheaper 220€ is good for a new desire z, I think.
I'm afraid about possible desire z successor with the coming of android Ics, (new htc device with qwerty + dual core + 1gb ram) but in the last years HTC seems slow to release devices with slide qwerty for the global market (I remember only dream/g1, desireZ/g2, and the USA myTouch xG Slide ).
If I buy desire Z and after 1 or 2 month HTC release a new qwerty device, I'll hate HTC for ever
I would think you could get one cheaper than that

Less than 200€ is hard to find here
180€ would be perfect, but 10 month ago it was 550€..
myTouch 4G Slide is a great device (and I don't just say that because I own it!).
The keyboard is better than the G2/Desire-Z's, at least for me. The keys are just a little bit smaller, but farther apart and I can type way faster/more accurately than on the G2. I always hit too many keys at once on the G2/Desire-Z.
And the hardware Android keys on the MT4GSlide are great!

[Q] Its upgrade time! Help me decide...

Due for an upgrade - been holding out for the HTC Desire Z as I love my keyboard, but have been offered the HTC Desire S.
I want some feedback in helping me decide...
Do you have a Desire Z? Is it aw awesome as it looks?
If you had the same choice, which would you choose?
Right now, neither.
i am using the desire z as my main phone now and it is a very good phone. the hardware keyboard is working fine and the hinge problem isn't such a problem as everybody says.
But...
if i would buy a new phone now it wouldn't be a desire z or a desire s. i would go for a phone with more power like the SG II. Don't get me wrong, the desire z is a awesome phone, but it lacks at raw power nowadays.
hope it helped
dz is kinda dying... people (talking about me) buy dz and overclock it, becausse its getting kinda slow (relatively to other phones)
—————————————————
I'm a 9gagger, if you are one... pm me
Get something with at least 1.5ghz+ to see something with moderate improvement over the DZ/DS. The era of ~1GHz phones is going to get phased out eventually when the devs are moving on to what is hot.
In Jan 2012 right now, that'd be the HTC/Tmobile Amaze, SGS2, Or the Optimus 4G, but dev support for that is limited.
I wouldn't pick either Desire Z or Desire S unless I knew I was going to get a good resale value. They're both pretty much the same hardware-wise.
Thanks
Thanks guys, but now I am confused.
I need a phone with a qwerty keyboard - are there any other, better, alternatives?
It is all subjective by what you mean is 'better'.
Yeah, there are a few out there:
- Motorola Milesone/Droid 4 : Dual 1.2Ghz, PowerVR SGX540, 1GB RAM
- HTC/Tmobile MyTouch 4g Slide: Dual 1.2Ghz, Adreno 220, 768MB RAM
- Samsung Captivate Glide: Dual 1.0Ghz, Tegra 2, 1GB RAM
Are they better than a Desire Z speedwise? Marginally, I don't think most of us will notice the mhz difference especially if we overclock the DesireZ which most roms do to ~1.0Ghz.
If you need more RAM for what you're doing, then it's definitely better. However if you ask which is better development wise? It's just left to the Desire Z and Mytouch4G now.

It depends on what you want to use it for.
If it just making phones calls, listening to music, writing e-mail and playing games then the Desire Z will be good enough for you (or alternatively Motorola Milestone 2).
Getting a dual core phone is not essential if you just want to do the above. On this forum, we like our specs. So in our eyes the better the specs, the more impress we are. But if you just want something practical and functional, then the Desire Z will be good enough for you.
As a Desire Z user, I'm happy with my phone and there isn't a phone out there at this point of time that is a worthy successor to it.

I agree with the previous poster... I've been using the G2/DZ for a year now and it still runs brilliantly (in part due to the fantastic ROM I'm running, ILWT CM7). I actually just bought the HTC Sensation for a family member. I rooted it and flashed a custom ROM... so I've spent some time with it, and I can say that despite the Sensation's Dual Core 1.2GHz processor, my G2 seemingly runs just as fast and smoothly (my G2 is overclocked just a bit at 1.1GHz). This is to say that I would still recommend this device to someone who was interested in a hard keyboard. It's been the most dependable phone I've owned to date.
I agree with others, had the desire, the desire hd and now i got the z with the weakest cpu. But if you're writing a lot it's very nice, i can write nearly bling with the keyboard meanwhile. I'm using ilwt-rom and it's much faster than the desire hd with sense. But if u got the decision, i'd advice you the galaxy s2 or the galaxy s plus because of amoled and the better batteryperformance. Bought a mugenakku for 30€/45$ and i'm very happy with my phone now. I think i'm gonna use until it won't work anymore. For the dailystuff eg youtube/sms/whatsapp and other stuff it's enough and very fast in my opinion. If you would like to play with your phone you should take the galaxy s2.
All in all it's the perfect phone to me

The Desire Z is a great phone! I've had mine about a year and while I was tempted inially when the Sensation came out, the lack of a hw keyboard made me think twice.
DZ has a few limitations, though. It has no front camera, which is not a deal breaker for me but would have been nice.
It has 512 MB RAM. If you're planning to root it and run a custom ROM based on Sense 3.0/3.5 I would recommend another phone with at least 768 MB RAM.
Sense is just too memory-heavy for DZ to run it smoothly and fast. Eventually you will have apps that you want to keep running falling out of memory, maybe soft reboots and hang ups all around.
It does run AOSP based ROMs perfectly well, be it CM, MIUI or other.
I love my DZ and will probably keep it at least until fall running some ICS ROM.
If hw keyboard is important to you it's a no-brainer.
The Desire Z is a great QWERTY entry level phone even if it has old specs. I still have it since it came out. It has great support from the Dev community as well
