what would you guys/gals reccommend for me? - Droid X General

i have a droid X from verizon. When I first bought the phone I loved it, then it did the automatic OS upgrade and now it's a huge pile of sheet. It constatnly freezes, shuts off whenever it feels like it, SOOO slow, many other issues. It's my first droid phone, i've flashed windows phones before. But what would you reccommend I do so I don't throw this phone thru the wall. Thanks.

I'd definitely install a different rom... what you like is your preference... if you aren't too concerned with blur camera and HDMI out then you could try CM7... if you still want the blur camera and HDMI out then you could try liberty 3, which I am running, and I love it... snappy, crisp rom with only the best parts of blur.. just my opinion
sent from my Droid X running Liberty 3

Honestly not even sure what blur camera is. I know i like my camera but sometimes you go to click camera and it doesn't start, then have to restart phone. And you take pics, and they either don't show up, or somehow get corrupted. My main thing is I do like the way it's set up but really want it to get faster and stop all the freezing and what not. From what i've read I was thinking about liberty 3 or the muin whatever that one is called.

Thinking of Selling my HD2, any suggestions to keep it?

I know you guys have seen a million of these threads, i thought my thoughts on this phone would change. I have taken a lot of your suggestions. I have Flashed the phone, to try to get rid of the laggyness and freezing. I am running RSTG Sense UI rom, and while the phone is a little faster. I am still getting freezes, restarting, it never properly updates facebook/twitter/weather, without freezing. I really want to keep this phone, but the allure of the nexus One is starting to become too much, especially after watching my buddy pick up a Droid and playing with it.
I just want to know what i am doing wrong, i haven't installed any programs on this, i have a few albums, the pictures that came with it, basically what i am getting at is, i did not put anything on it, to make it this sluggish, 15 mins before i decided to type this, my phone froze, i tried to check an SMS from the GF, and couldn't get past the unlock screen, it just keep freezing.
I am open to suggestions, i want to keep this phone, but it sounds like Android for the HD2 will never happen, from what i heard, its still a good year away, and even with the release of the EVO, we still aren't promised to get an android release for the HD2. I am able to deal with Winmo, i have a touch pro and a fuze, hacked/flashed to death. So it's not entirely winmo.
I just need to know whats a good ROM to run, i have the utmost respect for all the devs that cook these ROMs, and put the time and effort into making them, but i need one that is going to make my phone stable, and not crash. I went through a lot to get my Dream phone, only to find out, its been a nightmare since getting it.
So i am turning to you guys, what can i do to make this phone a little more stable. Please spare me the usual crap talking. I am asking because i really want to keep this phone, and i have tried the flashing. This phone should be butter and not hiccup this much.
Any help is appreciated and wanted. Thanks for reading, and i hope i was clear enough. I read these forums everyday, so please don't tell me to search, hell my GF hates that i got an HD2, cuz i lurk here 24/7, i wake up and go to sleep reading XDA lol.
Get a nexous one
get the nexous one
The HTC/Sense SMS app is the cause for most of the problems of this phone. Disabling it completely and using the Windows SMS app would prevent much of what you're describing. Regardless of what ROM you use, if you use the HTC/Sense SMS app, you're asking for trouble.
I have the Kumar Premium 1.5 and don't have issues. Once in a long while, the phone will slow down, but then it's back to normal. I also use MMTaskManager and cleanRAM regularly to make sure I don't have lingering things in memory that could take up resources since I've been downloading and installing apps more than usual.
But, that said, I say get the Nexus One. If you need someone else to convince you to keep the phone after you've had it for a while and already tried a few things, then my guess is you'll find some other niggles about the phone that will irritate you down the road. Better to cut your loses and get the Android phone.
Good luck!
Well Divx movies, 4.3 inch screen and its a phone that you can browse the internet...Is it perfect.....Hell NO!!!!!!! Does it have to be restarted all the time..Probably 5 times a day if your running apps. It freezes all the time. I run custom roms. Is there a better phone? Not until EVO with android. By that time Skyfire will be out of beta for flash support and maybe the kernal further along supporting more video formats... I had the NEXUS loved it.."i lost it".but to slow on tmobile. Now i have a 4.3 inch screen i cant go smaller only larger.
I will try to disable the SMS setting and use Windows, and i agree, once you have a screen this big, its really hard to go smaller, thats why i posted here. I just want some tips on how to make this thing run properly. A phone with these kind of specs, should not have these kinds of problems. A little slow down here and there is understandable, but the constant freezing/restarting is annoying.
I don't want to just get rid of it, maybe i should try another rom after i change those SMS settings.
Any other suggestions on how i can make this phone perform the way it should be performing?
i really want to keep it.
Oh and i always use task manager.always.

try another ROM, and try disabling some of the tabs in sense you don't use. Sense is the biggest culprit to crashes in my experience. No matter how powerful they make the HD2, if you keep a resource hogging piece of software running perpetually, it will slow things down. I close the tabs I don't use to minimize the performance draw. You can also try turning off the weather animations and the weather screen altogether. The weather animations are only fascinating for about a day anyway.
Trying another ROM is always a good route. I've used Kumars and Energy so far...both are very stable for me, and hardly ever crash.

Thanks for the reply, i was thinking of using Kumars, i keep hearing great things about it. I don't want to turn off the weather animations cuz they always amuse me lol.
i am using engery rom the apr 9 regular 21898 very fast and stable rom for me so far.
after use it for 2 days just find out most the crash was cause by opera mobile 10 so i either change to the opera mini 5 which almost the same with the opera mobile 10 or i need to EXIT it competely. and by the way did you hard reset you hd2 after flash to the new rom? it will help for the lacking issue too
Turn off the security code on the lock screen! That thing mucks the phone up and slows it to a snail. My wife's was constantly freezing with that option on.
Also search here, download and install QuikMenu 2.8. Set the XButton to close on short tap and minimize on long hold. Then set it to close Activesync. Then go to pg 2 and make the size 16 or greater to make it pretty. FYI QuikMenu only works with roms that have the Start Menu on top. If you use one with the Start Menu on the bottom use Xtask. Having these programs will eliminate tons of programs running in the background but give you control over which ones will and won't.

If you're going to try Kumar's, he's coming out with a non-HTC Messaging version of his 1.6 soon. I'm waiting for that and his Titanium version that doesn't have Sense at all to try.
I've heard that the Elegancia w/o HTC Messaging may be an option as well.
Well, if you do decide to eventually sell it...
I'd strongly suggest investing in another Android handset. Perhaps the upcoming, myTouch Slide. It's quite a marvel in comparison to the original fan-favorite, the G1.
The build quality is excellent too, most likely it will feel, "less fragile" and easy to snap than our HD2. LOL!
^^lol no i am okay, think i will stick with the Nexus One, its the phone i always wanted, just decided to wait, because i knew the HD2 was coming soon. Thanks for all the tips guys, i did get an interesting offer, a Nexus One and 200 bucks. it;s tough, thats a nice chunk of money and a good phone lol. Still thinking about it.
I do know i need to try another ROM, this one is slowing my phone down like crazy, i haven't have to do 3 restarts in a day, in a very long time, since my early TP days. but i will try everything you guys recommended first.
I hate to say it but I have the exact same feeling about this phone... I'm Sitting on the fence between selling it and sticking it out. I really just bought it for hardware reasons thinking it was gonna slap it to my TP2 but I'm more into the Android OS. Granted Windows can DO a lot, Android has a market place that I don't have to waste that much money on. In A lot of ways I wish this was a nexus one lol
Currently I'm using the T-Mobile My Touch (rooted) / TP2 - NRG ROM / and now the HD2 - NRG rom blah blah blah

HD2 is the best phone ever. If you are really into it you will feel its power. I like cooking ROMs myself and I really enjoy the feeling of tweaking the phone just like it was made for myself.
Well, to be honest, HD2 is not suitable for everybody. If you want a cellphone that is easy to use, then it may be good to get an Android phone or an iphone.
I bet people who love HTC and Windows Mobile mostly are not afraid of software issue and willing to conquer all the problems. They will eventually make this phone work for themselves.
I remeber testing my frieds winmo 2003 back in high school and getting my first HTC wizard, winmo was beautiful back then I have had 7 winmo phones and You get use to reseting the phoene 5 times a day and dealing with other crap
however when the android came out and it completely change everything Now there was another option (I hate the iphone I think its over priced for a stupid friendly phone that's missing a lot of things that ny PPC2003 was already capable of doing) soon I have to go back to android
YOU SHOULD DO THE SAME unless you can deal with the laggingnes rebooting 5 times a day apps that are not compatible with every winmo phone all on asuper expensive phone (lol with the same money you can get a N1)
i dont understand why everyone keeps saying this phone lags i have had this phone for 2 weeks now and has only frooze up on me once. the only time my phone reboots is when i install a program that is recommended reboot after install. i dont get any laggs what so ever i am a power user from web to games to music videos pictues gps on a daily basis and trust me i know what it is dealing with lagg is because i hated the tp2 it would freeze up everyday take for ever to load programs always error this error that. so i think maybe you should exchange it for another one maybe its that phone.
also maybe it could be that when i 1st got the phone i did all does registry tweak that boost the performance on the phone in the general thread. maybe you should do hard reset and then the registry tweak.

That's a very good deal. I'd be all over that if I weren't using my HD2 as my work device. Hell if I ever ran into a Nexus One for 200 bucks, I'd sell my iPhone in a heartbeat.
Honestly, unless you really need WM functions, and if you can live with a smaller screen, the Nexus One is the way to go. The screen on the Nexus One may be smaller, but that AMOLED screen is lovely....very deep blacks, even though the colors are a little over-saturated. Can't wait till that technology comes over to full sized TV's.
It was quite a change going to the HD2. I sat in the store playing with one for 2.5 hours before I decided to get the HD2. I knew it was going to be a learning experience coming from an iphone to WMobile but I could see straight away the amount of personal customization this has over the iphone. I personally cannot see how anyone can even compare it to the iphone as some do.
I spent nearly 15 hours in the first few days getting to know how to navigate through the phone and the file structure and redoing itunes. I read some great tips on this forum, such as formatting SD card and making all songs Mp3 so as the music player would not freeze and it's not locked up once. It's like a personal computer in my hand next to the iphone. Since I was still on a 2G iphone, the HD2 is so much faster, it's not even funny. No lock ups unless I do not restart after software install or mods. It seems that I have the latest tmo manila. My phone works great and the screen is incredible. It doesn't fit in my pocket like my iphone did but until there's an organic flip out holographic screen of some sort, it's the price I'll pay for the size of the screen.
Took off RTSG(sp) ROM and installed KUMAR's, i must say, Kumar, you saved this phone, your ROM is amazing, i haven't had any problems with it besides a little lag when i go to the home screen from time to time. Man this made me love the phone even more.
Did get an offer off, 400 dollars and a Blackberry 9700 brand new in the box. I was tempted because of the money, but in the end decided to keep my HD2. As long as it keeps running like this, i am satisfied. It's nice when everything is working the way it should be. thanks kumar, and thanks to the rest of you guys who responded to my thread.

Incredible user

So can I get some info on the X because I currently own an Incredible but have about a week now to switch. How do the two phones compare? Exactly how much can I do to the X? Currently my Incredible is rooted and using custom ROM and theme.
Thanks for the help in advance.
(Oh and is it true you can get rid of the UI on the X? I have a friend claiming he did)

you can get rid of about 95% of the blur, some has to stay but its being worked on, custom roms are just starting to roll out. However the kernel is locked so no major tampering with the cpu yet.
I had the inc for about a week or two, X is a big upgrade. I wouldnt switch back.
The Droid X wins in every category you can think of but UI(senses). Custom roms/themes are being worked on, and since we rooted and have deodex'd we are fastly moving foward....
So you guys think I should switch? And would you say it's easier or harder to root than the Inc?
Sorry for all the questions, I just want to make sure I have the best phone possible for the next 18 months lol.
Droid X is easy to root on 2.1 just use Universal Androot Beta 1.6.2(Link is clickable) for easy installation of apk for phone for a 1-click root solution. but if you want root on 2.2 require a bit more work but its still easy.
Well looks like you convinced me to get the Droid X!

only issue you may have, well 2. When taking pics you will think they are horrible when looking at them on the phone, but when you look at them on a comp they are better than the inc. Just something i noticed when switching. And if you frequently use the speaker, (music or voice) the volume is stupid low...
Just thought i would give you a heads up on the only things i have noticed.
Thanks for the help guys, only problem is after going to verizon today I kind of want the Fascinate
I suppose the screen is a big plus, but I hear it feels cheap when compared to the build quality of the X.... not that I beat my phone up on purpose...
I have both (got my X today). Sense and it's quirks are vastly superior to Blur, but I won't keep a phone stock if I can find a real vanilla build. I do miss things like having a dialer that doesn't suck and some of the skins for sense. I could use Sense builds, but I can tell there is no way I'll want to use any of the Blur crap (except DNLA, which looks neat).
The device itself the X wins hands down. The look and feel of the actual device is just.. better. It's faster overall (I get quad scores about as fast as my SkyRaider build without OC) and the screen looks great and it doesn't ever lag for me. The downside is that it's huge and I don't use a case. One slap in the junk with this thing from my pocket when I was trotting down some steps had me thinking twice.
But the INC has lots of customizations and badass devs (SkyRaider/Cyanogen/Virt/Redemption and now Ruby), and I'm kind of just checking out how active it is over here to see how much support it will get. I know the Ruby guys just got an X so that would satisfy me pretty well and they seem to have 2 or 3 devs that seem dedicated.
In a few weeks/months I think the X will have some good things coming. Once they do, I will like the phone more than the INC.
Just remember the Fascinate does not have a LED notifier but there are some hacks around. There is no HDMI out either. I have to admit the screen colors are amazing as well as the form factor, but it almost feels cheap. I love the screen size on the DX, its fast, ruins cool and the developers are flocking to the device since Koush made the Bootstrap recovery. Some of the developers already are, Pete(BB), Koush, ChevyNo1, Birdman, P3, cvpcs(Sapphire), the guys behind Rubix, JRummy was talking recently about getting one and I am sure I missed a few. I would also like to see the UnRevoked team get their hands on a DX to work their bootloader magic.
New Roms on their way are FlyX 1.0 and Obsidian(cvpcs) said he only needs a week from delivery of his X for release which means it could be by next weekend.

I'm in the same boat as the OP. I have the incredible for a few weeks now, a few days left in my 30 day window (like 4 haha). I like the device, but the battery life irks me (which is kind've silly since I'm not a heavy user and have had no issues making it through a day with the stock battery. still, I'd like a device that I can use without watching the percentage drop in a few minutes). My two brothers got the X, I went with the incredible as (mostly) I was impatient and liked the hackability it has. Having actually used the device, the ability to load custom roms is nice and all, but using a stock rom isn't really much of a difference for my use. Of concern to me is primarily dumping the Verizon trash but as long as the phone's rootable it's doable. I use Skyraider vanilla but I don't have any real reason that I couldn't use a stock rom.
I've spent many hours trying to come to a conclusion and I've not gotten anything conclusive from online posts and such, everyone seems to get caught up in the 'omg its sooooo big', followed quickly by their gripes with the 'blur-but-not-blur' implementation. I use LauncherPro anyways so much of Blur's issues are not a concern. My only reasonable complaint is the hardware buttons on the X's face vs the touch ones on the incredible, but this is minor imo.
I hate having to babysit my phone to get the best of the battery and the bump charging stuff rubs me the wrong way. I'm coming from an iphone 3g and the widget capabilities are so great, but to save battery on my incredible I have only one auto updating widget, despite desiring more. Separate concern is how Verizon would handle the return since I'm near to my 30 days and the X wouldn't ship for a handful of days, and returning the incredible before that time would render me without a phone. I'm probably going to call them tomorrow and see what they'll do. Perhaps I can get the phone and see how it fares in my normal usage patterns.
If anyone has any input I would much appreciate it as I need something to push me over the edge. Granted, this is the X forum so I doubt anyone will give the incredible much love.

Is the Samsung Fascinate a good choice?

I'm due for an upgrade on Nov. 18th, and wanted to know the goods and bads of this phone from my fellow XDA Community. Basically, I want to know:
1. Will the lagfix potentially fix any "lag" on the phone beforehand?
2. Is the GPS as bad as people say it is?
3. Is Screen Burn in a problem with the Super Amoled Screen?
4. Is the Camera and Camcorder any good?
I'm coming from a Droid Eris and want to get the best phone out there that can last me for a year.
Ok my personal opinion:
Camera is great!!!
Video Recording is great
Screen Is great!!!
GPS is quirky (might be fixed with 2.2 update)
Touchwiz is boring , slow etc
Great design!
But i got rid of mine, in hopes that the htc desire hd is being released this month on verizon! The new Sense UI is awesome .......my opinion others love stock android ui!
Just saw your coming from a HTC Eris..........then honestly if you like the Sense UI, dont get this!
Goodluck!
I came from an Eris too and I love this! (I got rid of the Sense UI on my Eris with a custom ROM) Personally I don't have any problem with lag even without a lagfix, my GPS works just fine, and call quality is great. It is a big improvement from the Eris, the battery life is definitely better, and I really have nothing bad to say about it. The only thing I miss is the LED notification but there are ways around that. The camera and camcorder work great - excellent picture quality, and no screen burn in that I have seen so far anyway.

Wtf does HTC sense have to do with the Samsung phone. I never flame but that is dumb as hell to say. Touchwiz and sense are not even close. Besides. Put LP on there and forget it. People only slam it when its not their cup of tea. I have literally had every phone Verizon has release since the Droid 1 and I ****ing love my fascinate. The new HTC will likely be a ***** to root much like the others. And Verizon WILL NOT GET DESIRE HD. it will likely be the exact same phone but not called that. But in Sherwood's defense ill say that's one hella good looking phone. But I am gonna keep my fascinate til LTE and by the. That HTC will be shot BC it wont have LTE. if u want to be impressed read about how much better fascinate screen and CPU /GPU Are than any other phone. If u like to game the Samsung galaxy phones are the absolutely best made for that

Untrue statement about Sense UI being better than Touchwiz. I have had the eris, incredible and now the facinate and touchwiz is just fine. Load ADW as your launcher and you will really dig this phone over the eris for sure.
IMO... GPS is not that big of an issue for me as there are some work arounds to get satellites to lock quicker and if I do get burn in on my screen I will have it replaced. With the 2.2 update just around the corner it should help make this a more solid phone. (Especially after the developers get a hold of it!) If your ok with the size of the incredible, there isn't a better phone made but it lacks a good car dock/mount and the best case ever made, "kickstand case". My incredible did have a little better cell signal also... Having said that, good luck. The facinate will be a huge upgrade from the eris. And as stated before, this is all (IMO) with experience with all three.

Depending on your screen size preferences and the reviews you might want to take a look at the Samsung Continuum when it comes out - should be before your upgrade date. If you must have a notification when things happen then the ticker seems to be a great idea. We have yet to see how it affects battery life though.
1. Yes. Also depends on your level of annoyance to the lag.
2. No.
3. None evident at all, after a month and a half.
4. Yes. I have always loved the sammy panorama feature.
No regrets at all.
good day.
Coming from a moto droid this phone is great!
Camera and camcorder are great
gps is iffy at time but works prob get fixed
I like touchwiz and find it not laggy at all in fact its one of the only launchers that dont lag when used with lwp. I mean launcher pro does not lag alot but u can see it in the app drawer alittle touchwiz app drawer has zero lag.
I dont use lagfix (uninstalled) i see no need for it actually i think just running the stock deodexed rom makes for a super smooth experiance.
Problem is, I'm deciding between a Samsung Fascinate with AWESOME hardware (love that GPU) and a Droid X with 2. 2. It's hard!
Sent from Eris with Froyo
Go to a corporate store and play with both of them - I briefly considered the Droid X but when I tried it out in the store, it just seemed slow and somehow cumbersome and not just from the size - even stock the Fascinate was smoother to me.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
If you liked the ERIS......... stay with SENSE UI. Its hard to give it up. I regret it!!!
As far as Games , if you want a gaming phone WAIT TILL THERE ARE QUALITY GAMES. And not 1 year old IPHONE PORTS.
Wait a little longer trust me.
BTW I had the droid X the camera was complete garbage!!! And I prefer capacative buttons at the bottom and not tactile ones like the x.
But again stay with sense. You get alot of built in options stock instead of 3rd party addons to get same options. Like copy and paste, and scrollable widgets.
Goodluck!!
I'll just have to wait and see.

1. I don't notice any lag for normal use. It only really lags on me when installing things from the Market, but I'm guessing this is a general issue with Android
2. GPS lock can take 10-20 sec, but isn't that bad. I've found that always leaving GPS on as opposed to turning it off/on as needed helps keep the lag from being as bad.
3. Haven't noticed any burn in on my phone
4. I haven't taken many pictures yet, but the one's I have taken have been good for a phone camera
I'd say go to a store and play with both devices. After using the capacitive buttons on the Fascinate for a couple weeks now, the physical buttons of the Droid X seemed annoying when I played around with one a few days ago. Also, if you're waiting until the 18th, FroYo should be out not long after that, and that is when I'd expect a lot of development to start up for ROMs and kernels, so the software should hopefully catch up to the great hardware in a couple months.
Droid X VS Fascinate
I just picked up the Fascinate a few days ago after returning the X. I had the X for three weeks. I agree with the poster that noted how BAD the X camera is. So far with the sammy I have not had any issues lag,GPS or otherwise. I had a Tmo Vibrant and loved it. My only complaint about the fascinate is the lack of 2.2. Other than that I think its the perfect size and weight. I currently carry and iPhone 4 and the Fascinate. I dont think I have taken the iPhone out of my laptop bag since I got the Samsung.

No, you shouldn't. Right now the Nexus Two is a mythical device that does not exist. Even if Google does decide to make one, it won't be out anytime soon, and there's a good chance it wouldn't be on Verizon first, if at all.
I came from an Eris myself, and had no problem dumping Sense UI. In fact, the last month I had it, I was running the KaosFroyo ROM, which is based on stock Froyo. Once I installed LauncherPro Plus, Dialer One, and a few other goodies, I realized that it was even better than when it ran Sense UI. If I were you, I would grab the Fascinate over the Droid X, because te hardware is superior, and Froyo will be out for it soon enough. Bing is a non-issue, since it can easily be removed by rooting, if you don't like it.

Alright all you root-ers.....

I come to the Droid X planet from the planet WinMo..... On my previous planet I frollicked in the flash-cooked-rom playground til I was dizzy & had a too-much-cheese-cake belly ache....so I waited 45 minutes & frollicked some more.
I've read all about rooting here, I get it. I thought, before arriving, that I'd be rooting the very night I got the DX, but that night came & went ... and so did about a week now.
I'm loving this phone in stock mode. Its so much better & faster & slicker than my Omnia that I can't honestly find a reason to root.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but the primary benefits to rooting are:
More thematic control
The ability to tether
marginally better battery life
the ability to overclock
So I'm all the way through a day at work w/ some calls, 10 to 20 texts, a couple of browser sessions, and 2 hours of mp3 play which lands me home w/ 40-50% battery left.
I just don't need to tether (although it'd be cool....and I'd prolly do it)
The ability to put a picture of my honeymoon in Kauai is all the Thematic control I need.
I'm already surfing while I listen to the PowerAmp MP3 player...how much faster does it need to be that I wanna overclock it? (I mean, I get how cool it is to actually do it & enjoy the observed performance bump, but......then I'm used to it being that fast)
Why do I wanna do this? I'm not trying to debate you, I believe you all like it better...so it IS better..but why might I like it better?
Talk to me like if you get ONE MORE root convert you'll get the toaster.
< used car salesman schtick >So....what's it gonna take for YOU to put ME in a rooted X today? < /used car salesman schtick >
It's all about what you like. If you are satisfied with stock so be it. I too was satisfied with stock, but the more I hung around these forums and read. The more curious I became. Rooting and unrooting is ridiculously easy. One click. I don't use tethering so I won't be able to convince you. However on battery life it is no contest. I used to be at 40 percent at noon with heavy usage. Once I rooted and changed roms (apex 1.4.1) I saw an enormous improvement. Now I am at 50 percent by 6 at night. I make a lot of calls during the day (25+) and I am checking email and what have you. It all comes down to how happy you are with what you have. I could be happy with stock again (I actually don't mind blur). Good luck with your decision, but I must warn you. Staying around these forums will not help you stay with stock for very long.
Edit: I wouldn't make a very good car salesman.
Blur-less ROM. 'nuff said.
See, now I'd read more "marginal" battery life improvement....your experience is a significant improvement.
And yes, hanging around here is how I got to be a flash-addicted on my previous planet....all to the good I might add, although MAN I could blow some hours on that.
I'll have to do some more reading on Blur and Blur-less.
i too came from the omnia. loved that phone. ive had my DX for a few weeks now, and aside from changing how it looks drastically i havent had the need to root or ROM the phone at all so far. although, the wifi tethering is the one reason i will end up rooting later this weekend, i use that a TON throughout my workday. i have been kind of avoiding it, but its something that has been a hassle since i changed phones. im more interested in hearing more about this "oneclick" root someone in here mentioned, ive read the sticky and probably everything else in this forum about rooting the DX and havent come across a one click method so far. so, apparently ive missed the best part?
Hanover....I found this:
http://www.droid-life.com/2010/07/27/root-and-unroot-your-droid-x-with-1-click/
...but it looks like a bunch of X-ers standing around the edge of the pool daring each other to jump in & report back. I like the "Noobs Guide" here better.
Another Rooting benefit I forgot to mention was how COOL backing up the state of the phone would be. I'm guessing that's App and Settings.....from WinMo flashes I loved the Dir you could put on the SD full of the apps & settings so that if the ROM you were flashing included this particular feature, those things would be loaded & setup from the get-go....forget what it was called; flippin fabulous. This backup capability that apparently comes along w/ Rooting (which isn't available from stock? ) sounds even better.
Anybody wanna tell me what they hate about Blur?
This discussion has a few links to Blur definition and commentary.....I guess I "like" the Blur stuff, although apparently it's been diluted to a palatable level in the X's 2.2.1 Android release.
I think its creepy keepin my schtuff in teh "cloud"....until I want it reloaded to my phone & poof! Its done...then its more cool than creepy
So far I've gotten
WAY better battery management (not just a little better)
Gotta Tether
And to that list I'd add the backup ability about which I'll have to read more.
So come on Rooters.....I'm still wanting to hear the GREATEST thing for you in your new ROM that Stock never provided.....
I had the tilt before coming to the X and I loved that phone. The "one click" method I was talking about is called z4root. You don't technically click it. It is an .apk that you run. Then click either temporary or permanent root. If you click permanent root, the next time you run it unroot will appear. If you get DroidX bootstrap you can make a nandroid backup of your current phone. Everything will be saved except the data from your apps. You would have.to use titanium backup for that. Then you could experiment with roms and if you don't like them go back to your backup. Which would put you back at stock. You can also make more than one backup. Keep reading and before you know it you will break down.
Just to let you know a little more between the blur and blur"less" roms. Since blur is part of motorola when a dev takes the blur out of the rom some of the functionality of the phone is lost. I.e. no hdmi, camera is less than stellar and etc...now you can just get the blur .apk for the camera. But you still lose hdmi out.
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
Thanks....I really like the camera....seems better than my Omnia's ....maybe I'm just on a honeymoon w/ the X
I'll have a few more laps in the pool here & then I'll giver a go. I mean, if I can fairly easily bop back to stock, then what's the cost? (well...besides the unlikely bricking).
So I guess I'll need to figure out which things are "Blur" and which things are "Android"....for instance:
can anybody tell me if thiese things remain in blurless ROMS?
The little red target that moves the cursor in text boxes? (love that)
the voice mic to talk in text in most text boxes?
syncing to/from my Gmail for contacts & calendar?
can I have "some" of the Motorola widgets of my choice? (or are they just bone cuz they "are" blur?)
Again, I can figure these things out first hand or read up, just checkin if one of you wanna chime in some more.
Great info. THanks for playin.
my reasons are quite simple for rooting my dx.addless apps/over clocking/"disabling"some factory installed apps/wifi tethering(not being stuck paying verison 20 bucks a month to do it).
Another reason to root and ROM is "New Phone Syndrome". I was excited like a kid in a candy store when I got my X. You couldn't pull my fingers from it. After 3 months I started to get bored. Don't get me wrong I still loved it but I needed new meat and waiting another 21 months for an upgrade didn't cut it. So if all those reasons to root and load a ROM like tethering, battery life, overclock, etc isn't good enough for you, then consider this...its like having a new phone when you load a ROM. Just my 2 cents.
DX CFU LIB 1.5
It almost sounds like you want to be convinced on something you kind of want to do because your bored,
About ROMs. Think of it like this...take two LCD TVs, one is 1080p one is 720P...if they are in separate rooms, you will never be able to tell the difference. Side by side, yes, you can see the difference, marginally. To me, all flashing a ROM does is change the transitional speed between screens, apps, etc., and remove the bloat ahead of time so you don't have to manually do it. That's my opinion. (disclaimer for the trolls ) And to be honest, that is where mainly all the praise comes from having a so called " fast ROM ", over stock. Motorola's stock transition times are slow (blur) and developers customize these settings to probably be 0. Other then that, I have had two brand new Droid X's side by side and there is no difference. Heck I have had four of them side by side and can't tell a difference in anything really besides transitioning in tasking.
How much time are people really spending transitioning between the app drawer and the home screen is beyond me lol but running any rom while in an app is never going to make a difference on a phone call, text, taking a picture etc.
If I could change these transition times myself (much like on a PC), I would love to run the stock ROM as it's 100% stable and smooth and I don't have to sacrifice a thing. If you want a different look once in a while like a black top bar or new icons, flash a theme for stock rom or an icon pack or, make your own like I do.
As far as rooting, yes, rooting for me is a must.
I root so I can have an exact backup to the state my phone was in before I start to dink around with it. I like to change my battery icons, make all my own icons and such so it helps when I flash or edit the wrong file. I like to be able to backup all my apps with a one click install after I go back to stock if need be. I like to be able to tether and to know I have that ability because times have arose when I needed to. And last but not least, have the ability to download and install non-market apps and content. There are websites out there that have plenty of apps and content not available the market that I use. Probably my biggest reason I root. Some apps require root so that will be your preference if you use those specific apps.
If you enjoy overclocking, that's another reason to root. The DX is not a PC though, I don't need to overclock to make a call and I am not playing Crysis on max resolution lol. If you are OCD about watching your benchmark scores go up and down, then overclock away!
Other then that, I have always praised that a stock, rooted Droid X with all it's bloatware removed is perfect in every way. The hardware on this awesome device is really all that you may want in a smart phone. It handles everything I throw at it and it's reliable for me. Overclocked or not, I can't tell the difference between 1Ghz and 1.3Ghz and that's on my phone alone.
Everything always comes down to preference. If you don't have a specific reason to root then don't. Unless you’re bored that is, lol.

Me too. Tried all the roms, all had some shortcommings. I am now back to stock, rooted, bloat removed, themed and loving it. Best batt life I have had.
Stock , rooted, bloat removed, theme-able, sounds like a dream come true.
I appreciate the insight.

Z4 root! One click! just get the link to download the app if it's not in the market.

[Q] Help! Setup Wiz Crashes after Factory Reset!

I just rooted my (R2-D2) Droid 2 two days ago using the app z4root (via 4shared). I'm on stock 2.2 (and by that I mean what came on the phone, so it's actually a light Blur 2.2)
Then I wanted to get rid of some of the bloatware, so I downloaded Bloat Freezer (still available on the Market) to do that. After freezing whatever apps I saw fit, I returned to see my homescreen black. I did some research and apparently this stems from "freezing" something to do with MotoBlur. I know for sure that I froze "Files" and "AccountSync", which apparently caused this problem with other people.
Supposedly a factor reset would fix it, but it didn't. So that's why I'm here.
So first I tried a normal reboot. That didn't work. Then I did a factory reset. I got all the way through the Setup Wizard, and then it took me back to the "Touch the Android to Begin" screen instead of closing to the home screen like normal. When I try to go through the Wizard again it crashes after syncing an account. I've tried three or four factory resets and this happens every time.
People had this problem while they were on other ROMs and supposedly flashing back to the original OS (not stock, but "stock" i.e. what Motorola put on the phone before), but I'm not on any other kind of ROM so I don't know if that would help.
Should I flash back to the original? Can I even do that if I haven't flashed an alternative ROM? Should I just try flashing to a different ROM (MIUI or Bugless Beast)? Can you even flash a ROM if you can't access most of the phone (the only things I have access to are my email [when the message icon pops up] and the hard reset menu thing)?
Note: Sorry if this isn't in the right thread, I couldn't figure out where to put malfunction type things. Mods can move it to where ever is appropriate. I also searched both XDA and the entire internet and either no one has this problem in the EXACT way I do (i.e. not on any special ROM) or the thread is extremely, extremely dead. So that's why I made the decision to post a new thread about it. Thanks!
Edit: I re-flashed my phone with RDS Lite, and while the homescreen is back it's extremely, extremely laggy. At first I thought it was broken again until I realized it was just taking so long to respond to my finger swipes. Right now it's trying to download 46 apps in the background, so I'll wait until that's done to try again. But I had faster responses even when everything was all broken and it was trying to install 46+ apps..
Those people were right. Find the .SBF file for your version of the Droid 2 and sbf back to "stock". That should fix you problem.
I'm in the process of RSDLite-ing right now, I wasn't sure if it would help though.. Stay tuned!

It should. Good luck.
Is this going to un-root my phone?

I believe so. But it should be relatively easy to reroot.
UGH, IT TOOK AWAY MY R2-D2 BOOT ANIMATION......
Also, I noticed that you have the MIUI ROM. Do you feel like it performs better than stock? Faster? Sometimes I feel like the Blur-lite was a little laggy..

Did you use the file specific to your phone? Either way, you should be able to get it back. Someone ripped out all the stuff from the R2D2 phone back when it came out. It's on the net somewhere.
I love Miui. It definitely performs better than stock and is much faster. I love the polished menu system and the included GB features are great. I especially love how you can customize practically everything. It has also greatly improved my battery life. I've been getting up to 20 hours on my standard extended battery. Good stuff. And if you don't like the iOSuck look of Miui, you can always download a different launcher (like ADW) and use that (like I did). Overall it performs surprisingly well considering it's on a locked phone.
(I've played with CM7 on my Incredible and PE on my now retired OG Droid. Miui definitely performs better.)

Well apparently not.. I'll have to try and find the boot animation again.
And yeah, a lot of people have been saying the stuff about the battery life.. Have you ever tried Bugless Beast? Because that's the other ROM I'm stuck between. So I'm not sure which one is performing better on people's Droids

I haven't used it yet, but I have heard good things. I probably will try it at one point though.
Like others have told me, you're just going to have to try them and see for youself. Different people have different experiences so it is difficult to determine which is better without some kind of experience with them.

Is MIUI all in English now? I know about a year ago there were sill some things in Chinese (like the call button for example). From the pictures they showed on the official site of the Droid 2 port it looked pretty English, but I can't really find much more information on it than that..
