[Q] Sprint tech ruined USB now what? - Epic 4G General

I took my phone into the sprint store because it had stopped charging. The tech said the USB port was loose and he re-soldered it. A week and a half later the charging issues started happening intermittently so i took it in again. He repaired it again and said he had to "gob" solder on it to get it to stay.
Now I can't get my computer to recognize it no matter what i do and all it will do is charge. The phone doesn't even recognize it's hooked to a computer and charges like it would in the car. I'm at a loss now and don't trust these muppets with my phone any more.
So does anybody know what they screwed up? Am I going to have to get it replaced to fix this mess?

Is it under warrnty

I wouldn't even bother with it anymore. I say you take it back and make them give you a replacement. Theoretically, THEY broke it, so it shouldn't be ur issue to have to fix.
Take ur phone back and explain to them what happened: You had issues so you took it in, not once, but twice... To get it "fixed" And that immediately after the second time you took it on, your computer could no longer detect ur phone.

Should I go to a different store or the same one? I think the Samsung warranty runs out at the end of the year but I have TEP.

You gotta use a dialer code and switch from modem back to pda (I think).
I can't remember the dialer code though, anyone able to help him out?

you really think the sprint tech would change that just to "solder" it?

No I think he ran the slate test (or whatever it's called) and changed the setting to modem.
I mean it's worth a shot, right?

The codes is ##8778#... although I don't believe this will fix his issue because even if the phone is in modem and not pda it should still recognize its plugged into a computer... you just can't mount the sd card as storage. Take the phone in and make them replace it

Thanks for the code, and you may very well be right about that, I just remember having some trouble after a sprint tech changed modes on me.

I tried the dialer code and came up with
UART: MODEM
USB: PDA
Is this what it is supposed to be?

Yes. I would bring it back and demand a replacement. Explain to the manager if you have to.

firstly, we have to cover our own mistakes, so your entitled to a replacement...
And second, we dont solder anymore? They actually made us ship back our soldering equipment nationally, and they stopped training people in it a while ago (i sure as hell dont know how to solder), so the fact that he would solder something is strange...
Was this a corporate S&R store?

Stupid double post

If it gets past supervisor's supervisor and there's no results, call executive customer service. If still nothing, it's BBB time. You will see your problem resolved then.

I'm not sure if it a corporate store or not. They have a sign that says sprint repair center so IDK. Interesting you say they not supposed to solder. They had professional solder equipment so I wonder if they are breaking the rules or mybe I'm just dumb for taking my phone to this place. I will be taking it in this after noon.

Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App

Just take it back and explain the situation. I've NEVER had a problem with Sprint working/fixing/replacing my phone under TEP before.
If worse comes to worse, ask for the manager and politely explain what happened.

So I finally had fine to take it in today. The tech gave me no trouble, but said I have to wait 10 days to 2 weeks to get my new phone. :-( at least this one works, just can't root it which sucks.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk

Two weeks? That is crazy, I have a new one coming tomorrow, and that's only because I was a little late to make it in on Monday. Call customer care and get that expedited. Maybe it's because the old one is completely down, but still...

I'm a Sprint service tech, and I know we're not allowed to solder except as a temporary fix. If you're still having issues, take it back in and insist on a replacement. Any store that values still being open will get your phone replaced, and if you had come into my store and I treated you and your phone like this, my manager would be falling all over himself apologizing and I'd probably be sent home for the day and written up, as this is not conducive to good customer service. I work for an indirect dealer, not Sprint corporate.
Edit: Nevermind, looks like you already got it replaced. The Epic musta been on backorder because usually we get them in next day or within two days.

EMERGENCY HELP!! X10 not charging, bad timing!

Hi guys!
I was using my X10 just now and i wanted to charge it cuz i needed to record something for my interview tomorrow. So I decided to plug in the charger, it was at 34% at that time, and everything was fine; the orange light was on and it was charging. Then I was browsing through some stuff and then the phone slipped out of my hand but I caught (kung fu skills ) in time but seemed to grabbed it too hard. I put my phone down for a while and when I went back to check it, the orange light was off and it wasn't charging anymore so I thought i accidentally kicked the charger or something. I unplugged it, and plugged it back and nothing. It doesn't work when I connect it to my laptop either. I tried taking the batteries out, waited a while and plugged it back again and it's still not working funny thing is when I turned the phone back on, it went down from 34% to 21% in about 5 minutes, and I wasn't even fiddling with the phone. I don't know if it's a hardware problem or software problem cuz I might have put too much pressure on the charger port and cracked it or something. I checked it but it seems fine. I really don't know what to do, and the Search function in this forum doesn't work either! I need the phone for tomorrow cuz I have this interview assignment thing...holycrap! what a bad day. Help, please? anyone??
Only real quick solution to get you through that interview is to buy a wallcharger in wich you put your battery. And regarding the damage it sounds hardware related, hope you have insurance! You might get lucky though if you return it for warranty but remember, there's usually a fee if they think the damage was man-made. Good luck with the phone and on your interview!

I heard about the wall charger before, but what use would it be if I can't connect my phone to the computer anyways I've had the X10 for about 3-4 months now, I hope the warranty service is still covered. Not sure if it'll work especially cuz I'm not the carrier's customer ((
So you need to access stuff that's on the phone? Or you need to access the stuff that's on the phone *with the phone*?
The first one's easy. Just buy a micro sd adapter and you can plug it into your computer (assuming it has one of those ports)
The second one.. need some more info before advising what to do. I didn't get what exactly the information is that you need to access. Is it a recording, notes, pictures, what?

You mean the receipt for the X10? I still have it but I'm not actually with Rogers. I got my friend that's with Rogers to buy the phone for me in case something like this happens, I don't know if they'll let me or not cuz I rooted my phone and all. I think i'll try and unroot it and put it back to Rogers firmware. Thanks for the advice
I'm from the UK and had exactly the same problem. I had to send it back to SE and they gave me a new unit. I had no proof of puchase though as I lost it awhile ago :/. But all in all it worked out well. They never told me what was wrong with the phone though.

[q] sprint service rep messed up my phone!

so I took my epic to a sprint store to get a new screen. got it back and turned it on. found out they deleted a few games and my task killer. and for some reason, my phone could not get an service whatsoever. it says I am in roaming with no bars and I know that's wrong because I get full bars in my house. also, I cannot send or receive calls or texts. after n hour on the phone with sprint, they couldn't fix it and they finally just switched my service to an older phone. I will go to a sprint store at a current date but I'm on vacation and don't have a chance to go to the store.
so, any ideas what mightve happened? and ideas how I should go about talking to sprint to get this issue fixed?
thanks in advance.

We will need to know more about the phone. Are you running stock ROM or not? Are you rooted? I am guessing that since you took it into the store that you were running it stock and unrooted. Give us some more details and we might be able to be more help.
It looks like you might need to factory reset, but you can d/l a backup program to save all the .apks for the apps you have gotten from the market, or you can root the phone and get a better backup program. I would not recommend using clockwork recovery as, I believe, it will back up everything and might just restore the phone to its unusable state. That being said it couldn't hurt to try Clockwork recovery and if you just have to wipe the phone again you can.
It's really annoying when you take a phone into Sprint and they just make matters worse. One time I took a phone it for an issue with the screen and they actually broke the screen further and then refused to figure out a way to fix it.
I'm rooted and I'm running the latest epic experience based off of dk28. was not able to odin completely back to stock before taking it to the store. they never said anything about it being the wrong firmware.
when I returned home, it was too late to actually do anything about the issue, so I called tech support. the woman worked me through some tests and nothing indicated what was wrong and therefore there's no solution to it. she finally just said that its a hardware malfunction, which it could be. only way to get that fixed is to go to the sprint store whenever I'm able to, which might not be for a while.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Yeah I don't think it's a hardware issuer personally. If you haven't tried wiping the phone and starting fresh that would be my first step. The fact is that if it's hardware you will end up with a fresh phone anyhow, so why not factory reset the phone and see if it fixes the problem...also maybe uninstall the last few apps you downloaded. They might be messing with your radios.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Did they choc the screen? If stop I guess it's possible that they messed up your radios at thst point.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
I actually think this is a hardware issue. Better flash back to stock before you bring it in for any issues or they can deny your replacement. Sprint corporate repair centers have advanced testers specifically for signal related issues and without an antenna it will fail for sure. You may want to explain the issue started when your screen was replaced.
When they replaced the screen they may have screwed up the antenna internal. Generally, a tech will not do anything with the firmware/software when they are fixing hardware so I am not sure what happened with your apps.
Also, the part was likely harvested from another phone... If they brought the antenna from the other phone it could be defective (which is possibly why it was there to harvest from). It's also possible that your antenna is not actually in your phone.
wait I thought if you were within your first year they had to give you a new phone anyway?
I would definatly be raising a stink! Look you paid good money for the phone and hopefully you paid for insurance. dont let them give you second rate service. Go ask for a new phone and just transfer all your stuffto that one.

As stated above, odin to stock, and ***** till its resolved. IDK if another sprint store is an option, but that can help, also calling into tech support and getting an appt with the repair center seems to help. Was just in today and should be getting a 'replacement' Monday, I have a purple line of what appears to be stuck pixels along the bottom or left side of screen. First sprint store, the brilliant techs tried to tell me it was a 'cosmetic flaw' and that they could fix it for 35 bux, knowing I have TEP... got home, called in, tech support guy was really cool, and also noticed that 35 bux applies to people w/o TEP, the only way money would be involved would be water, loss, etc... got an appt for today, and yeah... hoping the replacement is new... but whatever. Anyways, you have a 500 dollar phone, don't take any BS... the first guys even said to call sammy for a warranty.... idiots.
thanks for all the replies.
part of the tests included doing a factory reset. and that didn't work. I can't believe that doing a repair could completely mess up my phone even more. of course I'll ***** and complain until I get my way. I'm used to it with sprint.

They probably didnt reconnect the antenna. I had to get my 3.5mm headphone jack replaced on my epic and when the sprint rep handed the phone back, I went outside and couldnt get any signal whatsoever. I immediately took the phone back and the rep reconnected the antenna in a matter of minutes.

Definitely could be a simple issue with the antenna being plugged in. If it was reset already then its likely not software BUT... they will not replace it if it needs to be replaced if they notice that its rooted.
I had same issue after camera button failed. Antenna wasnt put back on properly. I had crazy signals.

Wrong. Sprint doesn't HAVE to give you a new phone. Its a fix/replace policy and if you don't have insurance it will cost you $35. That's a recent policy change. You can go through Samsung if your looking to excersise your one year warranty...but good luck on a rooted phone.

I will disagree with you, I do beleive that within the first year of you buying that phone they have to give you a replacement, But I will research this further and post my results.
I'll help with the policy, If you don't have a service and repair plan, or TEP, then they will charge you 35 for a repair, regardless of if the phone is in warranty or not. 35 bucks includes everything except board damage, phone coming in the store in two pieces, or liquid damage. I.E. something that can't be repaired anyway by anyone, I.E damaged beyond repair.
If you have the service plan, then you don't get charged the 35 bucks.
If the store can't fix the issue, they order a refurb phone that usually shows up in one/two business days at the store or to your house, your choice.
The only time you get a NEW phone is when you've had the device for less than 30 days, you can return it any time in that period or get it swapped out for a new one if there is a issue and the store can't fix it. You can return it for any reason as well during this time.
Anyway, like everyone stated, the issue with the phone is that the antenna is probably not hooked up. It's at the bottom of the phone, and is connected with a cable that has two connects on it, one at each end, at the antenna and at the main board. One or both of them is off the phone, and that could be fixed by anyone with a screw driver and a butter knife in about 5 minutes.

Well that stinks if i buy a almost 600 dollar phone and say 2 months goes , if they send me a refurbished , im gonna raise a stink.

Evo microUSB charging part broken?

From what i have read, a broken microusb port on an evo from tripping over it or dropping while charging is common. I have also read that in the past, customers with this problem have been denied repair or replacement by sprint. As of now, the most current instruction given to sprint employees is to give a replacement phone. I am getting my new evo on thursday. similar experiences with sprint support?
My wife and I both had issues with this on our first phones within a couple of months of getting them launch weekend. Sprint acknowledged that it was a problem and promptly replaced them, albeit with refurbished phones.
The refurbishment must have worked, though, since neither of us has had any charging problems since.
[edit]
Well, until today, that is. I think I broke it myself this time, though.
[/edit]
This is what I absolutely hate about sprint, they cannot get their sh1t straight. One store will do it, another wont. Thats ridiculous.
Anyway, the usb port breaking IS a hardware failure, and IS covered under the 1 year warranty. If a sprint store gives you crap about it, call *2 and talk to Account Services, tell them you will cancel your account if they dont fulfill the warranty.
Yeah the insurance only covers software problems like the phone won't even turn on same Thing happened to me it broke Sprint denied me and I had to go to a phone repair shop paying $118 but one time my phone didn't turn on because the heat fried it (summer time) and they replaced it.

No, insurance is for lost, stolen, or broken (by you, i.e. you drop in toilet or run over with a car). Anything else that YOU didn't do to the phone is considered a manufacturer defect, and is covered by the warranty. I hate to say it, but you got screwed, you should have gotten it fixed for free.
I'm having the same issue right now. I've had my phone for 10 months and the USB port went defective a few weeks ago. I have to wiggle the cord around to get it to charge and sometimes it will and sometimes it won't.
I'm trying to get my phone back to stock because i used Simple Root v.1 when it came out last year.
This thread says i can just flash a stock signed rom, but my phone says "S-off" even though i never used unREVoked forever. Do i just flash the rom anyway?
My first Evo had the same problem within the the first 4 months. I purchased it and launch and found out that it was a hardware defect but could not go through all the hastle of getting it fixed. I would have been phone-less for too long so I ended up paying 35 to the local repair spore and got a new phone. I have yet to run into the same problem with the replacement phone. I wonder if I could get the 35 refunded to me because I do have chat logs where representatives said it was a defect.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
My first launch day EVO broke 2 months in. One sprint store told me I would have to call the insurance and so I went to another sprint store and for $35 got a replacment.
No consistency!!
Well when I asked sprint if they could fix it they said damages like that would be through your one year warranty with HTC and would have to pay deductible.

You need to run a ruu my guess is your rooting process installed the ENG bootloader and that is why it still says s-off

It depends on how the charging port is detached from the board. If the solder joints are left intact, it's a manufacturer defect and is actually a known issue in the Sprint system.
If the solder joints are damaged or "torn", then it's customer abuse and an insurance claim will have to be filed.
Would the loud speaker being muffled be considered a defect? I have a speaker problem and charger problem. Sprint was telling me $39 to fix it, which sadly is cheaper than I can do it since you have to buy about 6 speakers online

Definitely unroot it. Lady at my local Sprint store got all uppity with me because she saw CM7 on mine. x_x
I went in with mine rooted and all. The guy actually was pretty into the phone being rooted lol. Asked me what time I was using etc. Charge port was broken, ordered me a new (refurbished) phone, sent me on my way lol.

I believe I posted this in another thread, but can't remember.
It depends on how the port is damaged. If it just pulls completely loose from the board, solder joints intact, then it's a known issue. Replacement will be given through S&R.
If the solder joints are broken or the charging pins are bent, it's considered customer abuse and an insurance claim will have to be filed.
The ports cannot be replaced in a service center. I work in an ASC & the service centers do not solder anything back on to the board so replacement is the only option.

Asurion Question

So I got stuck in a heavy rain storm and my S4 got a little wet. Didn't notice until later that my phone wasn't charging, after totally drying off. The charging port got really hot.
Wouldn't charge a little bit ago either. So I put in an insurance claim for replacement. Plugged it in literally 5 minutes later and it charges again. Will Asurion cancel the claim and refund me the $150 bucks or do I just have to eat it? Kinda annoyed that it just started charging again.
Yes you can cancel the claim just go to the website and do it.

Call their 1800 number its the fastest.
It has apparently already shipped with a FedEx tracking number.
The number, 1-800-584-3666, also has no option to even talk to anyone. It has two options... New claim or tracking. I guess I could dispute the charge with the bank since they have no way to contact a human?

I dunno if they'd refund the charge or not. I wouldn't even be able to talk to anyone as it is since their number is just an automated hotline. Seems pretty shady business to me if you can't even talk to anybody. I guess I'll just have to talk to my bank about disputing the charges since they give no way of contacting anybody.
Seriously they have a number listed right on the contact us page of their website to talk to somebody about a claim. They also have a chat service to talk to somebody. I recently had a claim and was able to contact them a couple times with absolutely no problem. If you can't find those numbers just call sprint, explain your situation and they will connect you. Chances are good they "will not" refund the deductible and since you have already told them the phone has water damage sprint will no longer allow it to be covered. However its always worth a try. I have always had great service with asurion. Best of luck to you.

So they don't cover water damage even though it's an option for replacement on their site? Uhhh....
Also, the number they have on the Contact Us page has no option to speak with anyone. Do you have a link for the live chat thing?
You misunderstand. You have already reported the phone damaged by water if you don't replace it then they won't continue covering a damaged phone. I'm on my phone now but will try to edit this with a link here in a few.
8005843666 after entering your phone number just press 0 several times. I just did it and got right to a person.

Well I guess if they won't cover it then it's useless. Plus if it's working fine now, doesn't mean issues won't come up later from it getting wet, even though it's dried off now, correct?
Usually if it gets wet and you turn it off and dry it completely you can get them to work fine. Not always though especially if something shorts out while it is wet. Just call and talk to them maybe they will do something for you. Sometimes it depends on who you talk to and their mood. It doesn't hurt to ask them. Good luck.

Honestly, speaking as a sprint tech, your best bet is to go through with the claim. Your initial symptoms were likely caused by standing liquid causing a short, so now that it's dry it's not surprising it's working, but that is just the beginning; if you had enough water to cause a short, then the daughter board that houses the charging port is likely to have a good amount of corrosion in a week or two. This is why we reject LD phones: because of what liquid does to the components in the phone later. The amount of corrosion/calcification that can happen in these phones from small amounts of liquid is scary.

Yeah I'm going to keep the claim for that reason. Was thinking basically the same thing. I am running CM10.1. Are they going to get pissy because I flashed CWM via Odin? Download mode shows that things have been flashed. Didn't know if there's a way to clear that after restoring the stock ROM...
What about the evidence of Odin flashing seen in download mode?
This is why I suggest getting phones from Best buy with their Geek Squad protection. No deductible and infinite replacements, covers everything but lost/stolen devices.

Best buy is the way to go went thru like 5 evo 3ds with them and never had problems

asurion could care less what you did to your phone once you pay the deductible.

[Q] Hard brick..

My phone is hard bricked. When I try to turn it on there is absolutely no response. The screen does not light up, the phone does not vibrate. Absolutely nothing. I'm pretty positive there is nothing I can do about this. I called sprint and they said take it to the store and if their techs can not do anything about it then they will send me a new phone. Is there anyway the techs could tell my phone has had roms on it or been rooted and therefore not send me a new phone? Also does anyone have any ideas on any solutions? I've tried odin and recovery, nothing is happening at all even when plugged in to USB or wall charger.
From other users experiences on various forums, it is generally seen that if the phone wont turn on then they can't tell if its been superusered, rooted, or had the rom blown to bits, just make sure to remove your sd card first to eliminate most possibilities of them finding out.

A lot of things actually.. First thing was I tried to boot in recovery from the rom and nothing happened so I pulled the battery out and put it back in and let the phone charge all night but it never charged overnight and when I woke up it was so hot I could barely hold it. So I tried to go to download mode and at the time I could so I downloaded the stock files and went to flash it to stock in Odin figuring it was the rom. The phone shut off during the middle of flashing the system.img and after that I somehow managed to get it to recovery and I was wiping the cache to flash the stock rom zip file and then it just shut off and every pixel on the screen slowly started turning like green and then flashed really bright and that's when it officially died.

Nothing happens at all when I plug into a pc. What is qualcomm mode?
Something similar happened to me and it ended up being a dead battery because the phone wouldn't charge it. I pulled my battery, charged it on a universal charger and was able to get it into Download mode. That was just my experience though. I hope you get it figured out.

My friend has an s4 as well and I tried his battery with no luck. Thanks though
Here is what you need to check for, plug it into the pc, go to device manager, under ports, the device should show up, what does it show?
If it says anything like QLOAD or similar (sorry been awhile) you are hard bricked, and a jtag service would be the only way, now if you exchange the device with sprint, it will be ok until some tech reviews it and plugs in his equipment, he may see the same, tmo tried get me to pay way back in my..mytouch days, had another issue with att early on, they didn't ever say anything, it was a hardware issue on that one.
bottom line, look in device manager first.
The Ax says good luck.

Ahhhh yes. Have someone else pay for your mistakes. Free phone means Sprints customers are taking in the cost of you breaking your phone. Smh.

What kind of proof do you have that by him getting a free replacement, we all have to pay for it?

LOL. Who the hell do you think the cost goes to if Sprint gives everyone a new phone that bricks it while flashing ROMs? Sprint is a business and what costs the company money costs the customer money.

It's not that simple though. I'm sure a Sprint allocates a specific amount of funds every year for equipment replacement. I'm sure those getting replacements for bricking their phones makes up a very small percentage of the replacements they send out every year.

And what do you think would happen if a large portion of Sprints customers started bricking their phone's? Completely locked bootloaders, prices of everything including monthly plans, insurance and phones going up? I know when I had the S3 I saw several bricks a week from people messing with things that they shouldn't and by not following instructions. So in the end whether you realize it or not you and I pay for it. And going into Sprint and acting innocent like you have no idea what happened to your phone is fraud. Plain and simple.

Cool beans.
At any rate I was planning on doing the insurance claim and paying the 150$ deductible but they said they'd get a new one for me.

I have no problem if somebody is honest about what they did and Sprint replaces the phone with no deductible. It is fraud to lie and act innocent and get a new phone.

I understand that. I have had insurance on 4 lines for 3 years and have used it once. I was more than happy to use the insurance but they offered to give me a new phone so I'm not turning that down. Sprint has earned plenty of money from me
