hey guys,
I have put a sim card from my iphone 1st gen to my x1... the x1 can detect the sim and auto config itself to att setting. However it always show its on the 3G network (should be edge instead) and whenever I try to get online it will say it cannot connect to the server.... any idea on how to fix it?
I have tried to put in a att 3G sim in it and it works perfectly fine.. so I am guessing somehow the phone just like the 3G network better and always try to get itself on the 3G but not the edge??
I tried using the advance config to bring out the disable 3G tab in the communication manager... but its always gray out and nothing I can do to it.

Was your last phone the iPhone? If so you have to make sure to do 4 things before internet will work on any other phone you put that sim in
1. Call ATT&T and have them put the Xperia IMEI number on your account.
2. Change your data plan from the iPhone data plan to the "pda personal" data plan
3. Confirm all references to the iPhone are out of ATT&T systems. I had this problem a couple of weeks ago where I changed my data plan but the rep forgot to update something in the billing system which still referenced me as having an iPhone and my internet would not work until they removed it.
4. Go into the connection manager on the phone and edit the wap.cingular settings. For some reason the connection manager populates a username and password, you need to delete both values as ATT&T medianet no longer uses a username and password
Your phone showing "H" (3G) doesn't really have any bearing on if you actually have internet connectivity as my phone was doing the same thing even before I got everything straightened out with ATT&T.

hrmm... cool let me try that and see.... I was thinking I can just pop in a sim card and work =D
but do you have to change to the smartphone plane or you can use the unlimited media?
i just popped in my sim card and everything worked. didnt have to call to give them my ime number but then again, i have a prepaid phone sim card and dont know if that would make a difference.
i dont see why your wanting edge, when 3g (h) is what you should really be wanting. well anyways, you wont get edge, if 3g is available. thats your phone picking up the high speed band, it will pick up whats available. thats just my thoughts anyways.
i have an x1a

and btw... when I put that iphone sim to my blackjack 2... it did connect to the edge network instead of the 3G for some reason
is blackjack a 3g phone or edge. i thought its just an edge phone but i just looked it up and it does support 3g.
Can somebody help me out
i have a mytouch 3g but dont have any data plan
how do i register it without a data plan
help! I know how to do it w/o a data plan on g1
but not this one
I don't know of any way to register without a data plan, but you can pay for just 1 day of the data plan. Sign up for the data plan, register, and then send an email to [email protected] saying you don't need the data plan any longer. They will remove it no questions asked by email.
enable wlan?!
btw, there is no need to register with google if you dont have a data plan.
this feature just enables online content.
how do i ENABLE WLAN
Can't you register through a wifi network?
It is what I did on my Vodafone Magic. Hope it helps.
my magic asked me when i started for the first time whether i want to enable wifi.
afterwards it asked for reg.
mytouch actually requires you to have a data plan to register or login to gmail account before you can use access anything. I see no one is able to bypass the register/login screen on the mytouch 3g.
Ask someone for their SIM card who already has the data plan, put it in your phone and activate it with a new gmail account or sign in if you already have a gmail. Then put your SIM card into the phone and you will have access to the phone. Hope that helps.
i got an unlocked mytouch that was factory reset...when i boot it with a sim that has a data plan and set the apn for my country (i live in Caribbean) i get a little "E" icon on which i think is the Edge or GPRS symbol , but the sign in fail...saying that the 'its unable to connect to google servers" yes the setting are correct and the sim has the data plan cause it works with other phone where i live
also... from what i read there is now way to bypass the activation screen using wifi like you can do with the G1? is that true or am i looking in the wrong places
Help...frustrated....

Im having the same problem...im on at&t wireless without a data plan and cannot get pass the login/activation screen...this sucks I can't even make a simple phone call...
I've got the same problem, anybody figure it out?
go to a T-Mobile store. Ask if you can borrow the sim from one of their demo phones for a minute. once registered you can use it all you like.
If I already have a sim with an iphone data plan on it shouldn't the connection work to register?
So it has to be a T-mob data plan to register the phone and get past the activation? I would like to know as I had to master reset mine and I live in Trinidad and Tobago. Thank you.
First of all, you need tmobile data plan if it is a mytouch 3g because the APN settings are factory set to tmobile APN. You can't change those until you have signed into google and have access to settings and other features.
If you are a tmobile customer, then just log in to tmobile.com and sign up for data plan. it'll take anywhere from 30 mins to a few hours to get data plan. sign on to google and then cancel the data plan.
If you are NOT a tmobile customer then find someone who is a tmobile customer with a data plan or go to one of those tmobile stores at the mall and politely ask them to use their sim to register your phone. Or find a friend. I don't know if there is any way around it.
Finally, ROOT your phone so you don't have to worry about this crap!
Just a note of caution. If your phone has donut on it then you will have to downgrade to cupcake before you can root and that will require you to login to google one more time, so don't cancel the data plan until you do this if you intend on rooting your phone.
OK, so as I mentioned before I am from Trinidad and Tobago so the option of "going to a T-moble store" or "borrowing a friend's sim" is out of the question. Even if I do get it to the US it would be to get it registered and after I root I would be back to square one.
Another thing I saw mentioned in your post was that the APN is set to Tmobile but in my APN entries there aren't any. Does this affect any thing?

It's easy! Just skip the whole registration process and from there you will go to the home screen. From there, you can setup your wifi and then register your device! At least this is for the Google phones.
MT3G does not allow you to skip the registraiton process.
try getting a bmobile sim card with a data plan or a data sim as wee call it in trinidad and use that to register the phone, bmobiles APN settings are simple, just type in Internet as the APN and leave everything else blank, that should work...
Hello,

I don't think it's that hard to find out. Just pull it out and insert it in.
I think he is asking for permission
Actually I should say that I don't have the tab yet but wondered if this would work. Anyone try it?
I have the tmobile version. I popped my sim card in and got 3g but redirected. I think that there isnt a restriction you can pop in your sim and start using it. If you want to use it as a phone you need to flash the firmware. check the att thread
No... This did not work effectively for me when I took the Samsung Galaxy Captivate (SGH-I897) SIM from AT&T and inserted it into the Tab... After talking to AT&T for several hours and even asking them to validate with Samsung we determined the following:
1. Audio calls using the 3G network is not possible at this point in time.
2. Needed to enable a separate data plan with AT&T and a new phone # using the SIM for 3G data (2GB/mo = $25 + I added the unlimited messaging = $15 /mo).

Well, if you have hours to spend for AT&T rep, why don't you spend some time reading up from this forum? Here is a good place to start http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=847273
Of course, it's not supported by AT&T but then why buy the tab if you can't do sh*t about it? If that the case, I would prolly buy an iPad and feed Steve Jobs so he could be wealthier
What the heck is wrong with some of you? Why don't some of you think for yourselves? I didn't even hestitate, I asked the sales rep if I could pop my SIM into their display model and she said ok. It downloaded data immediately on my account. And I have unlimited data plan and the SIM normally sits in my Tilt 2.
It works. I had the common sense to just do it then and there.
Sure, it doesn't make calls. That's a ROM issue. But then that's also heavily documented here on this forum and the info to defeat that is there, too.
Sheesh.
Hey Guys! I think I'll be pulling the trigger soon in buying to Galaxy Note, I just wanted to give out a shout and see if anyone here has used a iPad Data only SIM card (micro Sim inside a adapter).
I currently have the $30 month unlimited plan and I use that SIM in my iPhone 4 with a custom APN. I would think the APN modification would be the same for the Note, where you just change "wap.cingular" to simply: "Broadband" as I had to do with my iPhone 4.
I was just curious is anyone else has done this yet? I did a search and I have been trolling, but I have yet to find anything about a user using a iPad SIM inside a Android PHONE(though I used it on the ATT Galaxy tab with no modification)
I have been able to use talkatone/google voice to be completely Data centric, though I do have the cheapest gophone that I keep turned off in my car just in case...I was able to use my Galaxy Tab in the same way, so I don't see any reason why I can't use a Galaxy Note with data only.
I would be interested to know as well. I think I want to just use the Note as a mini tablet paired to my iPhone 4S. Can the Note be used only with a data plan?
iPad 2 Data Only plan on Galaxy Note
I bought the Galaxy Note about a week now, and I have been using it as a replacement for my iPad 2 rather then a 2nd phone. (Currently using Galaxy SII). My iPad 2 data plan has unlimited 3G and the only problem was the convert the microSIM to a Regular SIM. In the end, I decided to visit the local telecom services (Using One2free-CSL, Hong Kong) and asked for a replacement of a new SIM card. I tried using a MicroSIM adaptor and honestly as I plug in the adaptor halfway to the SGN it started to get tight and hard to pull it back out. This is why I decided to as for a replacement SIM rather then using a microSIM adapter.
Anyways the end result is, it works... I am currently running my GSN on One2free Data only network plan (+21 Mbps) and rocking it.
I made an adapter out of a credit card, its very easy but dangerous
Selotape the credit card firmly to a flat piece of wood.
Draw round a normal sim then draw round the micro sim aligning the contacts with the normal sim ones. Cut the micro sim out of the centre first then cut the outsides out after that using a craft knife.
Press the micro sim in in the hole youve made.
Watch your fingers lol...

Did you have to modify of change the APN at all? Or you just put it in there and data magically worked?

Well, I placed a Order for a Note, if I can't get my iPad SIM to work I'll try and do a GoPhone plan, and if that does not work, I'll buy a iPhone 4S, sell the 4S and use that plan.
Also trying to use my iPad data only sim card in my new Samsung Galaxy Note.
Tried setting up a new APN setting - found on various forums - for AT&T
wap.cingular
but so far have not got it working
Anyone figured this out yet?

ipad sim
Hello. I've been running an iPad 3g sim with unlimited data through several android phones and now the note. I use google voice and csipsimple to get by on calling and texting and the rest of my data is for netflix and browsing. I love it. Only $29.99 every month no tax and I can do anything that every other plan offers. Anyways to setup an android phone for the iPad sim the apn should be set as
Name: anything you want
Apn: broadband
Leave everything else to not set.
MCC: 310
MNC: 410
Authentication type: select none
And that's it. Make sure you hit the menu button and save the apn then Delete any other apn on the phone and you'll be good to go . Hope this helps.
I was able to get an ATT pre-paid tablet sim and works just fine in the note. Using the APN broadband as described above. I just went in the store, told them I had a GSM compatible tablet and wanted tablet plan. They did have to activate the sim using the IEMI of a tablet in the store but works without any problems. Prior to doing that, I tried friends iPhone sim and Cellular One sim and both worked without issue. Did manually configure the APN of course.
I used the same setting as noted above. Its the same settings at you would use on a ATT phone, you are just excluding the mms fields abd changing wap.cingular to "broadband" as i had to do on my iphone 4.

Stupid question and a little off-topic, but will an iPad SIM work with an unlocked iPhone 4S? When I travel, I wouldn't mind using an unlocked iPhone 4 with data only. I don't see a reason to get voice. If it does work, will I be able to tether devices to the iPhone 4S and get data via wifi or bluetooth?

From that I understand the Custom APN changer does work on the 4S as well.
You simply go to:
http://unlockit.co.nz/
on your iphone
Select your country and "AT&T (Broadband)" as your carrier
Install APN
This works while in the US with a ATT iPad SIM. I am not sure about other iPad sims for other countries. You used to be able to complete your own APN, but now it seams they are sticking to standardized ones that have to be pre-programmed by their website. This also lets you use a normal iPhone SIm in your iPad for data only.
I doubt you would be able to tether. There is no Jailbreak available for the 4S yet, and if you can't get tethering on the Data only plans. Maybe if you had a unlocked 4S? IDK if the tethering feature works like that if your plan does not support it or if its not locked down.
Any android tablet???
So, I am to understand I can use my iPad sim unlimited ATT 3G in any Android tablet? Ie Samsung 7.7, Note,or when released the Asus 700?
Do I need to do anything to sim card so it fits in sim slots on these tablets?

before i test someones ipad sim in my samsung GS3, i tried to edit the apn section:
i cant delete the 2 existing apn settings for my telus canada sim, nor edit them, they are dimmed.
i can add a new apn and highlight it with the little green radio box.
but i cannot then delete the other 2 that look like they automatically show up on inserting my sim
i have done the gs3 unlock steps also, using the phone dialer codes...
any ideas?

why removed?
my gs3 is unlocked supposedly by the phone dialer method on these forums.
if the apn is dimmed due to locking, that would show how to verify that that method of unlock works...
why cant i edit the apn...
and if i put in an ipad sim, will it be dimmed too...

just tried a rogers canada sim (i was originally locked to telus which is NOT the same network)
it works percectly and i can edit the apn entries
funny, but when i put back in my telus sim, i CANNOT edit the apn.
mabe its sim dependent.
now i can finally test an ipad data plan sim, i have yet to find one from another ipad user, but its only $20 to buy one on fido's 15 day money back guarantee and try activating in a friends ipad tablet who currently doesent use a sim....

ok, last update on this unresponsive thread with mysterious removed info about locking...:ill copy it to the gs3 specific forum though im sure it applies to the note 2 as well.
1) my phone-dialer-code-style unlocked (as per these forums) samsung galaxy s3 i747m JB 4.1.1 stock rom, rooted, telus canada will take any sim, i have tested it and the unlock works.
2) i finally went and got a tablet flex data plan with telus canada, made for android as well as ipad. they activated it in store, no need to go find a friend with an ipad or device.
i put it in my gs3 and immediately had functionality (but with accidental settings for expensive pay per use data because of telus' apn settings that get automatically set up if a sim is put into a phone and not a tablet).
3) apn settings are changeable but NOT by editing, only by adding a new one and not using the save menu choice (!):
i needed to go to the apn area on my gs3 and ADD a new proper apn (see 4 below) without changing the other 2 dimmed and unchangeable ones
then i had to NOT choose save from menu but rather, just EXIT out with the back button
once back to the apn list which then shows 3 entries instead of 2 i had to only tap the radio button of the new apn and exit out with the back button again. if i then go back in and look at my new apn, it has filled in a few other fields automatically but left the important one for telus canada which is the APN:
isp.telus.com
and NOT sp.telus.com which would give you a $600 bill at the end of the month.
4) only apn entries required were:
add new apn
name: whatever
apn: isp.telus.com
then hit BACK button INSTEAD OF save, itll show a selectable radio button, select it, back out again with back button
rest of settings are auto filled and your up and running, no more steps, tethering included.
I put in my chip and it can't connect at all? Is there anything special I need to do to be able to connect to AT&T?

That thread should work. One thing to remember, if you don't have an LTE data plan on your account then you need to use "phone" instead of "pta," which is also mentioned in the post.
I called them last night, from the new phone, after popping my iPhone 4 (3g speed) sim in. Told them I wanted to re-provision my grandfathered unlimited plan to a Smarthphone 4g plan. When they asked I just gave them the IMEI off the Nexus and said it was an LG phone (Optimus G, I did have to re-iterate that a few times to them). Then used the 'phone' APN, 'pta' wouldnt work as I think thats LTE specific, and when they told me to reboot I had data. Checked my at&t account immediately after, and my old Unlimited Data for iPhone had been changed to "Data Unlimited SmartPhone Personal". Was pretty easy =)
