ATT edge wont work on x1 - XPERIA X1 General

hey guys,
I have put a sim card from my iphone 1st gen to my x1... the x1 can detect the sim and auto config itself to att setting. However it always show its on the 3G network (should be edge instead) and whenever I try to get online it will say it cannot connect to the server.... any idea on how to fix it?
I have tried to put in a att 3G sim in it and it works perfectly fine.. so I am guessing somehow the phone just like the 3G network better and always try to get itself on the 3G but not the edge??
I tried using the advance config to bring out the disable 3G tab in the communication manager... but its always gray out and nothing I can do to it.

Was your last phone the iPhone? If so you have to make sure to do 4 things before internet will work on any other phone you put that sim in
1. Call ATT&T and have them put the Xperia IMEI number on your account.
2. Change your data plan from the iPhone data plan to the "pda personal" data plan
3. Confirm all references to the iPhone are out of ATT&T systems. I had this problem a couple of weeks ago where I changed my data plan but the rep forgot to update something in the billing system which still referenced me as having an iPhone and my internet would not work until they removed it.
4. Go into the connection manager on the phone and edit the wap.cingular settings. For some reason the connection manager populates a username and password, you need to delete both values as ATT&T medianet no longer uses a username and password
Your phone showing "H" (3G) doesn't really have any bearing on if you actually have internet connectivity as my phone was doing the same thing even before I got everything straightened out with ATT&T.

hrmm... cool let me try that and see.... I was thinking I can just pop in a sim card and work =D
but do you have to change to the smartphone plane or you can use the unlimited media?

i just popped in my sim card and everything worked. didnt have to call to give them my ime number but then again, i have a prepaid phone sim card and dont know if that would make a difference.
i dont see why your wanting edge, when 3g (h) is what you should really be wanting. well anyways, you wont get edge, if 3g is available. thats your phone picking up the high speed band, it will pick up whats available. thats just my thoughts anyways.
i have an x1a

Help! How do u register w/o a data plan

Can somebody help me out
i have a mytouch 3g but dont have any data plan
how do i register it without a data plan
help! I know how to do it w/o a data plan on g1
but not this one
I don't know of any way to register without a data plan, but you can pay for just 1 day of the data plan. Sign up for the data plan, register, and then send an email to [email protected] saying you don't need the data plan any longer. They will remove it no questions asked by email.
enable wlan?!
btw, there is no need to register with google if you dont have a data plan.
this feature just enables online content.
how do i ENABLE WLAN
Can't you register through a wifi network?
It is what I did on my Vodafone Magic. Hope it helps.
my magic asked me when i started for the first time whether i want to enable wifi.
afterwards it asked for reg.
mytouch actually requires you to have a data plan to register or login to gmail account before you can use access anything. I see no one is able to bypass the register/login screen on the mytouch 3g.
Ask someone for their SIM card who already has the data plan, put it in your phone and activate it with a new gmail account or sign in if you already have a gmail. Then put your SIM card into the phone and you will have access to the phone. Hope that helps.
i got an unlocked mytouch that was factory reset...when i boot it with a sim that has a data plan and set the apn for my country (i live in Caribbean) i get a little "E" icon on which i think is the Edge or GPRS symbol , but the sign in fail...saying that the 'its unable to connect to google servers" yes the setting are correct and the sim has the data plan cause it works with other phone where i live
also... from what i read there is now way to bypass the activation screen using wifi like you can do with the G1? is that true or am i looking in the wrong places
Help...frustrated....

Im having the same problem...im on at&t wireless without a data plan and cannot get pass the login/activation screen...this sucks I can't even make a simple phone call...
I've got the same problem, anybody figure it out?
go to a T-Mobile store. Ask if you can borrow the sim from one of their demo phones for a minute. once registered you can use it all you like.
If I already have a sim with an iphone data plan on it shouldn't the connection work to register?
So it has to be a T-mob data plan to register the phone and get past the activation? I would like to know as I had to master reset mine and I live in Trinidad and Tobago. Thank you.
First of all, you need tmobile data plan if it is a mytouch 3g because the APN settings are factory set to tmobile APN. You can't change those until you have signed into google and have access to settings and other features.
If you are a tmobile customer, then just log in to tmobile.com and sign up for data plan. it'll take anywhere from 30 mins to a few hours to get data plan. sign on to google and then cancel the data plan.
If you are NOT a tmobile customer then find someone who is a tmobile customer with a data plan or go to one of those tmobile stores at the mall and politely ask them to use their sim to register your phone. Or find a friend. I don't know if there is any way around it.
Finally, ROOT your phone so you don't have to worry about this crap!
Just a note of caution. If your phone has donut on it then you will have to downgrade to cupcake before you can root and that will require you to login to google one more time, so don't cancel the data plan until you do this if you intend on rooting your phone.
OK, so as I mentioned before I am from Trinidad and Tobago so the option of "going to a T-moble store" or "borrowing a friend's sim" is out of the question. Even if I do get it to the US it would be to get it registered and after I root I would be back to square one.
Another thing I saw mentioned in your post was that the APN is set to Tmobile but in my APN entries there aren't any. Does this affect any thing?

It's easy! Just skip the whole registration process and from there you will go to the home screen. From there, you can setup your wifi and then register your device! At least this is for the Google phones.
MT3G does not allow you to skip the registraiton process.
try getting a bmobile sim card with a data plan or a data sim as wee call it in trinidad and use that to register the phone, bmobiles APN settings are simple, just type in Internet as the APN and leave everything else blank, that should work...

Use T-mobile Htc Hd2 On AT&T 3G Network?

Hi guys, i have already searched the forums and cant find anything related to my title. Basically i would like to know if i could use my hd2 on at&t 3g network and how can i do it. I know i can unlock my hd2 by asking t-mobile but would it work on at&t? Thanks in advance
yeah it works on at&t network but not as 3g. It gets E which is the edge. If you search the forum there's a cab file that will program the phone so you can use data connection with at&t network. I got my phone unlocked via tmobile and have been using it with at&t for a couple weeks now without any problems.
SO you are basically saying that i can do anything i can already do with the phone on t mobile on at&t but except have 3g? So i would have to use edge as my data connection for internet? And how does sms work? Any settings to change to get it to work?
Install this cab file, its all you need to do
http://www.mediafire.com/?kmlmn4wt35m
These are the att settings everything will just work
on att, you can use gprs/edge , but of course no 3g
You have to have T-Mobile account to get the HD2....they don't sell them unlocked... after 40 days of use on a t-mobile account, t-mobile customer service will provide youw ith an unlock code, not before...

No, can't be flashed to work on AT&T 3G. You would have to get the Australian Telstra 9193 model which uses the 850 band that AT&T uses. That's the only way to use AT&Ts 3G with the HD2. The bands are set in the hardware.

I have an HD2 on AT&T and everything works, but not fine! If I am browsing the internet and the phone tries to update the weather or mail, really anything else that accesses data in the background it will stop my data connection everywhere. It seems the only way to fix this is a hard reset sometimes, at the very least I have to exit the browser, open the task manager, kill everything, and turn off the data connection in the wireless controls and turn the data back on... My questions to the others who are using this phone on AT&T are 1) are you experiencing the same problems? 2) What did you do to fix this. I have installed the above mentioned cab file for settings and I have also manually entered the settings. I would love the phone even though it only has EDGE except it cant hold a data connection for more than 10 minutes at a time.

Well due to the type of connection that EDGE is, you cannot be on the internet and talk on the phone at the same time. This would also go for all applications that use the data connection...only one at a time. This was the case on the pre-3G phones like the HTC Wizard (Cingular 8125).

The phone cannot and will not get 3G when used on the AT&T network, despite what your icons show...the hardware simply isn't capable. Period.
Bought my unlock code through ebay for $14.00 and had the phone unlocked in 20mins. HD2 works great now.

G = GPRS
E = EDGE
look them up on wikipedia if you want more info but.....
GRPS is older and slower than Edge, GRPS max speed in ideal conditions is somewhere i the upper double digits/ lower triple digits. You might be lucky to get into the 200kbps range with EDGE.
In the end both suck compared to being able to get tmobile's 3g signal which ive personally seen hit 5mbit/s here in tampa now that HSPA+ is deployed. Being able to get ATT's 3g might get you right around 1mbit if lucky. I dont know what if any plans ATT has for HSPA+ deployment

Yes you can but you will have to flash a custom EURO based ROM in order to do it and use the correct modem driver for your carrier.
There are several posts with instructions on how to do it here in the Galaxy Tab forums. Good Luck and be sure to read up before trying it. I have done it and its not too hard. Just be patient and read.

You can't use data with a phone SIM card without possibly doing something illegal that I wont go into in this thread. Basically, the network realizes you have a phone data plan and that you are not on a device approved for that phone plan.

AT&T data only

Hi,
I am trying to get an AT&T data plan only for my Note. SO I was trying to get the data plan for a tablet and AT&T gave me a SIM card but they wouldn't activate it. They said I need to put it in my tablet to activate it. Does anyone know if I can just call AT&T and ask them to activate it for me over the phone???
Any other way to get data only plan on the Note?
I made a thread about this last week and never got a answer. I plan to be doing the same once I get mine. I have my Micro SIM from my iPAD(unlimited Data)
I know with the iPhone the only APN I had to change was the wap.cingular. I typed "Broadband" instead, and my iPhone works with the Data only SIM.
I used that same sim with a converter in my ATT Galaxy Tab with no modification.
See if you can find the normal ATT APN then do what I did, subtract the "wap.cingular" for "broadband"
If you are waiyting and just want to activate it...maybe try and fone some one with a 3g ipad that will let you activate your plan? Once you do, they can pop their sim back in and it wil be as if you never did anything.

[Q] Nexus 4 data radio problem?

I'm a smartphone noob [though slightly above-average with technology in general] - the Nexus 4 is my first smartphone, and I've been lurking here for a week looking for all possible solutions for my problem and none have worked, so please bear with the longish post:
Nexus 4 16GB, bought from the US Play store - using it since Monday, Dec 10. I'm using it with a Straight Talk AT&T SIM, and I have *no cellular data* whatsoever. I have been using the phone for a week now, and I haven't been able to use the internet except on wifi. No 3G/EDGE/HSPA+ logos next to the signal bars - in fact the signal bars always grey when wifi is off. I have only seen the signal bars turn blue when the wifi is on, never on a cellular network.
APN settings have been verified, and tens (yes, TENS) of Straight Talk reps have said my account seems to be provisioned correctly and good to go. I have tried all the alternative APN settings suggested for Straight Talk on various forums, including the two-APN configuration for MMS and data, deleting the data proxy from the APN settings, reverting to the default APN settings on the SIM and even using the Straight Talk T-Mobile APN [though I know for sure mine is an AT&T SIM because T-Mo doesn't cover my workplace, where I have good signal strength].
My old device was an AT&T locked dumbphone, so I couldn't change the APN settings on it to use the data on StraightTalk, but when I put my Straight Talk SIM in, it shows the 3G logo next to the signal bars suggesting that my StraightTalk account is probably provisioned correctly for data.
Hard reset, repeated reboots and repeated toggling of data and airplane modes have all been tried, and nothing has changed the situation. I have perfect voice and text messaging connectivity and zero data.
As a smartphone noob - is there a separate radio in the phone for data connections, and is it possible that this radio alone is a lemon on my phone? I *do not* have access to another micro-SIM, unfortunately - CDMA is popular in my town and the only two of my friends who have phones with removable SIMs probably won't appreciate having their regular SIMs cut down to micro for me to test. Without being able to test it, I don't know if I should just RMA it either.
***UPDATE*** : FIXED
I got a T-Mobile SIM to test the phone, and data worked perfectly well on that, so I concluded it probably wasn't the phone. T-Mobile wasn't an option for me though, because they have crappy reception in most of my town.
Happened to travel to Boston, tried my StraightTalk SIM in a friend's phone there - data worked fine then. So now I didn't know if it was the phone or the SIM.
After three weeks of grief and fighting, I got StraightTalk to send me a replacement SIM, which fixed the issue immediately - I had full HSPA data connectivity within five minutes of dialing their number to have my SIM activated.
Turn on Mobile data?
Have you enabled the 3G/mobile data switch built into android? Settings > Wireless & data > More > Mobile Networks > data Enabled Tick that if its unchecked, Im still waiting for mine but my HTC explorer running a vanila flavour of ICS has a similar settings menu, its somewhere along those lines bud, post back with results. As i said might be in a different location due to the differing OS versions
Good luck mate, Blewk
EDIT: Nevermind ive just opened my eyes and noticed you've tried it xD
so try calling this number *#*#4636#*#* and going through each of those settings (apart from LTE of course) see if any of them give you a Data connection. constantly checking the data switch on the phone at all times though making sure its enabled If this offers no luck im out of ideas for you mate

So what are your APN setting? Can't really trust CSRs since they aren't using a Nexus 4 to test themselves.

I've attached screenshots with the current settings, which are the ones the CSRs recommended.
I have also tried
deleting the proxy+port
changing both proxies to addressort format
changing the APN type to "default, supl, mms".
editing the SIM's default APN values to these, instead of creating a new APN.
and various combinations of these. None of these have helped. (I reboot and wait 30-45 minutes after every change in these settings).
EDIT: addressort is address(colon)port. Forgot to disable smilies.
Try changing your MMS Proxy to 66.209.11.33 see if that helps. Its the only difference I can see.

Try changing your MMS Proxy to 66.209.11.33 see if that helps. Its the only difference I can see.

Thank you, I've tried that too. Since my other phone (without the correct APN) still shows the 3G logo next to the signal bars and the Nexus 4 doesn't show any data speed indications, is it safe to assume the issue is with the device and not the network?

so try calling this number *#*#4636#*#* and going through each of those settings (apart from LTE of course) see if any of them give you a Data connection. constantly checking the data switch on the phone at all times though making sure its enabled If this offers no luck im out of ideas for you mate

Thanks. I was trying just that (saw the *#*#4636#*#* code on another forum), and none of the options work. I'm wondering if that means my radio is dead. I don't want that to be the case, but I can't think of another explanation
You appear to not have an APN type set up.

Edit: use these settings. Except in the first APN remove the first proxy line.

Edit 2: yes you do have apn type... My bad. Haha

I think I have the same problem as the OP. In my case, the HSPA radio connects about 50% of the time after a reboot. In my case, I'm convinced that the loss of signal is attributed to failure to communicate with the SIM card.
For the OP: Are your signal bars grey? or is it just an outline of a triangle on its side? If it's just an outline, the phone sees the SIM card, but cant retrieve the necessary data. To confirm, install a SIM info app from the Play store and see if the app see all details of the sim card.
I have already replaced the sim card, assuming I had a defective SIM, but the new card has not resolved the issue.
At this point, I think I need to RMA my phone.

It looks like the SIM details are being seen - I have voice and texting capabilities, and my signal bars are present but grey. Sorry to hear about your phone - my data connection is out 100% of the time though.
I've ordered a T-Mobile SIM to check this out - this way I should be able to figure out whether it's the network or the SIM.
Update: I've tried a T-Mo SIM and it works perfectly. So it's not the device.
However T-Mo isn't actually a viable option for me because they have very limited coverage where I live. Straight Talk keep telling me their provisioning is okay - any way to check on this? What other issues could I possible have that might be causing this?

Are you sure you have AT&T 3G coverage near you? I looked on AT&T's map for my work place and it shows 3G coverage but the entire county only gets 2G EDGE. And EDGE is horribly slow, I can't download anything. Went to Wal-Mart there and went to the wireless store and they confirmed that there is no 3G coverage in the area except for Verizon (which I had before this phone). I have an app called Network Signal Info, it will tell you what type of data network you are connecting too even when on wifi. It tells me EDGE2 at work HSPA at home.

Edit: just wanted to add that I read somewhere in a thread here that the colors blue and gray only signify if you are connected to google services or not. Blue you're connected, gray you're not.

Dead sure - as I said in my original post, I put my SIM back in my old (locked) dumbphone and it shows the 3G logo - though I can't use data on that phone because I'm locked out of the APN settings. And colleagues at work with have HSPA+ on AT&T. I can't try their SIMs though, because they don't use micro-SIM.
As for signal bar colours - even if there is no Google connectivity, it should at least show me a 3G or H/H+ next to the signal bars, which doesn't happen - and I cannot access anything on the internet anyway. I tried actually accessing the internet via the browser and various apps, I'm not deciding my connectivity based on the bar colours.
ALSO: When I use *#*#4636#*#* to turn the radio off and then on again, "GPRS service" goes to "connecting" but eventually stops at "disconnected". And the "network type" in that menu says "HSPA", so it looks like the network is kicking me off though I can't for the life of me say why that's happening.

I'm constantly get this issue where the signal bar becomes just an outline every minute or so and I lose connection. When this is happening sms becomes erratic (I receive texts multiple times sometimes 20-30 minutes after it was first sent, texts are received in the wrong order, cannot send texts until i restart phone).
Possibly hardware issue?
I had the same problem... could connect to the wireless network only if wireless data was disabled or WIFI was on.
Ordered a replacement which came today, and all is good Seems to be a hardware issue.

I to am having the same problem connecting to data networks. I have had the nexus 4 for about 2 weeks and its been an amazing phone until this morning when I had no data connection in town and around town. My iPhone 4 has 3G connection in the same area, with the same sim card. Ive already looked around the net and found the post to reset the radio but nothing happened. After not having radio or data for about 2 hours my phone finally fixed its self. I have no clue why I lost data connection or how it fixed its self. I will stay posted to see what happens but maybe there is some bad hardware in the device that is just now starting to surface.???
Hi I appear to have the same problem. My phone is able to make calls/text and etc with data off but when data is turned back on it screws around, doesnt connect to the internet, grey outline on service and etc. I'm thinking this is an hardware issue but how would I go and exchange this. One more thing, I bought this brand new from someone, does that matter?

If you want to RMA your phone, you can transfer the ownership by calling Google Play support. You will need the device IMEI and the email address of the original purchaser. Just tell them the phone was gifted to you. After the ownership is transferred, you can begin the RMA process.
