[Q] Changing Displayed Name under Email - Galaxy Tab General

Hi
Recently got a galaxy tab 10.1, and has 3.1 installed - no upgrade available yet apparently.
Anyway, I'm not sure if I've missed something glaringly obvious, but I'm reasonably literate with stuff like this. I'm trying to get my email setup, and have tried a number of apps. Until ICS comes out, Ive decided to use the stock email app, the samsung one..
Anyway, I can add multiple accounts, so I've got gmail, hotmail etc. The only problem is gmail (IMAP?) has a change displayed name feature, whereas hotmail (on activesync?) doesn't... So if my email was [email protected], my gmail has a setting to change that to whatever I want, in this instance Mr Bob Smith. However, the hotmail doesn't, and when I send an email, it's from bigbillybob, essentially just the first part of the email address.
I can't believe that this is a bug / intentional, but the setting isn't there under the hotmail account. I was hoping someone could shed some light on this. No luck searching - Otherwise it's a great little device.

This is not the Galaxy Tab 10.1 forums. This is for the original Galaxy Tab.
Please post your question in the correct forum (i.e. the 10.1's dedicated forum) to have your question better answered.

I found a workaround to change the "Your Name" setting in the stock Email app. I posted the details at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=31342076.

Samsung Vibrant TouchWiz Calendar not sending invites to participants.

Hi all-
My Samsung Vibrant TouchWiz Calendar is not sending invites to participants when saving the calendar entry to exchange 2003 push synced calendar. I only sync my calendar and email to exchange (not my contacts because I can't add ringtones to exchange contacts). The calendar entry gets synced to exchange, but shows up in outlook with no attendees. Also the attendees never receive an invite email. The touchwiz calendar however will send invites when I save the calendar entry to gmail. Is this a limitation or a bug? As a side note, the default Android calendar on my coworkers droid (not TouchWiz) synced to the same exchange 2003 server works just fine at creating calendar entries with participants and sending meeting invites.
PS: I'm the IT admin for everything so I can check any setting or apply any fix because I'm awesome...

Really guys? No one has an answer our similar experience?

Still no expert opinion? Am I the only one?

This seems to be a problem in the stock e-mail / calendaring client. So far, I have found only 3 work arounds:
1. Schedule meetings from the PC client (which is what I do).
2. Schedule meetings using a third-party client like TouchDown or Roadsync. I used to use Roadsync, but their later builds have not been up to par. So, I've moved back to stock.
3. Send your calendar invitation as an attachment from the Calendar app.
I don't know if 2.2 fixes this shortcoming or not.
There's been a long conversation about this elsewhere, but I'd have to search around for that thread.
P.S. That is interesting about your co-worker's droid.
ScratchSF,
Thanks for the update. I am glad atleast someone took the time to review. I have been flipping through AndroidForums, XDA, T-Mobile Forums, etc for a fix/workaround or at least an answer from someone with a bit more experience. I agree with you on the third party app. I tried TouchDown and the UI is just not something I could ever get used to using. I am not sure it is a stock email/calendar client issue, more likely its the Touchwiz interface. What leads me to this conclusion like I said in the previous post is the following observations:
TouchWiz Calendar is able to send invites when saving calendar entries to gmail calendar
I have verified with my own eyes that one of my employees, Droid sends invites when saving to his exchange calendar and he is running Eclair 2.1 with the stock android calendar
Various other shortcoming of the Touchwiz calendar including having to specify which calendar to save to for every calendar entry created (With the un-deleteable "My Calendar" being the default)
I appreciate you clearing the air and letting me know that there is a thread out there that discusses this issue in further detail. My curiosity is peaked however, I would enjoy reading what others have said so if you could send me the thread to look at, I would appreciate it.
You could always just replace the TouchWiz calendar with the stock one. Also, it's "piqued my interest" not "peaked"... that always irks me...
ScratchSF,
Thanks for responding to the post and clearing some of the confusion running around in my head. 8 Years of IT experience, 1 month of Android experience. You get the picture.
I would love to read the thread you are refering to that discusses this issue in further detail (I have yet to see one that fully details the issues) and I have been searching for a month now.
I do agree that if the limitation is an Android issue, the fact that my employee's Eclair 2.1 with stock Calendar being able to save calender entries to exchange and have the invites go out it a pecuiliarity. However in my research I see that there are quite a few issues with the Samsung/Touchwiz calendar (besides my problem) that would make it much more likely that Samsung does not properly support Exchange syncing yet. My understanding with 2.2. Exchange enhancements was that Tasks and Memo syncing would be added features. I personally have seen my employee's droid function correctly (running the stock calendar).
So if you could dredge up the thread you where talking about so I can read for my own sense of sanity, I would appreciate it.

Kuhan,
Sorry to say that I have already tried that. Replacing the TouchWiz calendar with the stock Android calendar causes a force close when attempting to sync to Exchange. This is likely to do with the stock Android Calendar provider not having the same hooks that the Samsung/TouchWiz calendar provider has. It was my first step (as I think the stock calendar is far better).
Any other ideas?
Update... Upgraded to Team Whiskey Obsidian V2 and then V4.2 w/ULF and since the upgrade, calendar had been working like a dream. Invites sent via exchange get sent to the recipient through exchange. Accepted invites still don't update the status of participants but oh well it works!

Unable to get iCloud email

Hello,
I'm an ex-iPhone 4S owner and now the proud owner of the S2 (I couldn't afford an S3 to be honest). It's a wonderful phone! I'm really happy with it, or at least I was until I tried to hook up to my iCloud email account. It just won't connect!
I tried the settings as per http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4864 but no joy... It can't be a problem with the settings as I use these settings on my Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus.
Have any of you lot managed to connect to your iCloud email? If anyone has any sensible suggestions I'd be most grateful
Cheers,
David
Update: Okay, I thought I'd just leave the phone for a while after changing the password and after at least 5 minutes it connected to the account! Why the delay? It's now loading the Inbox and has been doing this for over 5 minutes!!
Actually, does anyone have any recommendations for email clients? I just need to be able managae multiple accounts, imap, the usual...
Aw sh*t... It's still "loading" the email box. Been over half an hour.
I'm mystified as to why it works on my Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus but not this? Maybe it's an ICS thing... I've still got Honeycomb on the Tab.
Help!! :crying:

[Q] Gmail Refresh Bug

Hi Guys,
Quite often I see that the Gmail app on my N7 (second generation) does not show the latest emails even after a complete sync. I have to switch between folders (say from Inbox to Priority-Inbox, and back to Inbox) to see the new emails. I know I am not the only to see this issue as I have seen a few redditors complaining about it as well, but I was wondering if any know of a solution to this problem.
Most often i have to do the folder switch trick as I do not know if the list of emails is up to date. This is a big annoyance.
Thanks,
nitro
I've never had problems with Gmail...
on an other note, you're posting this under the wrong forum, this should be in Questions and Answers
I have found no way to check all you mail accounts at once in "combined view" in the mail program. You need to go to each one and refresh it to check it.
Thats is of course if you DO NOT have your push setup.

No Search in Email App CM11

Running CM11 nightly build for today 12/12/13, also was running the previous build and everything runs fine except I have no search icon on the default email app. Does anyone else have this issue?
Just wanted to follow up on this. I thought it might be a KitKat or CM issue so I flashed CM 10.2. Same issue, no search in default exchange mail app. I then flashed one of the LG based roms and same thing. Interesting note that as I was entering the server details I could see the little search Icon on the top but as soon as I entered the server specs it disappeared. I'm beginning to believe that it is something to do with my companies Exchange server now. Also note that when I first received the phone, I was totally stock using the LG email app and search was there. As a work around I have installed the Cloudmagic email app which is pretty good and has the search feature but one grip I have about it is that it doesn't search your companies global contacts like the default app does so your stuck with copying and pasting from another email or just replying to an older one. And before anyone asks, Yes I have tried Touchdown but the $20 asking price is ridiculous IMHO and I just think the interface is retarded. Again, my opinion. If you like it more power to ya!

After doing a little more research on this it seems that this might actually be an Android problem.

"Me" contact - Can it be linked to Gmail info

Hi all,
Bought a unlocked G6 about a month ago after owning a G3. So far I am really happy with it, however it bugs me that the "Me" contact does not pull the information from Google - i.e. the Duo app is not shown there, the address (work or home) from Google isn't there neither. Is there a way to link the information?
Thanks for your time and looking forward to your replies.
Wasn't this suppose to be automatic?
Well, that would have been my thought but it doesn't work on my phone for some reason.
This is still bugging me massively, am I the only one in this situation?
I've just checked on my G6 and it doesn't show any info for me at all.
Update: I've just added my home address using the edit function and now my info does show.
Indeed if you edit the contact info it will show.
My point is that the contact should be pulling info from your or mine Google account information and it doesn't.
Well for me contact syncing doesn't work at all on stock(/fulmics) rom.
I've re-added some colleagues a couple of times only to lose them again on full wipes.
Everything working as it should now on LineageOS.

Starting with Android 5.0, multiple user accounts are allowed to be set up on an Android phone. Maybe your gmail info is deliberately not linked to the phone's own number to prevent "other" users of the phone (who may have different gmail addresses) from using those info?

This is possible, I have three gmail account for myself on the phone. However, technically it would be really easy for them to make you select which account you would like to be your main one.
Anyway, thanks.
