I might be late on this topic, but today I used 4G for the first time. I talked on the phone and surfed the internet at the same time! I was very surprised, so surprised I ram Pandora radio, talked on the phone, and downloaded apps from the market while on my blue tooth.
Now i'm very pumped up about 4G Android! Who cares about an iPhone now!

Androids been 4g for a long time. Unfortunately sprints network connects to it as it pleases. I've given up on 4g until they upgrade their services, which you won't see me holding my breath over.

We can't even get 4G wimax where we live. That's why I cautiously hopeful that when Sprint finally rolls out LTE we may actually get something faster than 3G around here.

Same here, got 8.5 down, 1.5 up this morning.
i get mediocre 4g at best. But i dont care cause i very rarely use it. Most of the time i'm on wifi
cant' live without 4g anymore in NY.. esp with crappy sprint 3g speeds. between tethering, checking email on a phone call or just loading pages faster, its so much better. obviously battery life suffers but for what i'm doing i have the phone plugged in alot so its ok
i thought 4g was just a myth

If live in or next to a major city more than likely you'll have 4g
Yup, I'm outside Chicago and get pretty good 4G service at my office. Home, not so much as it's not even there, but that's what WiFi is for. I consistently get 1.5Mb up, but you can tell that's what it's limited at. I have surpassed the 10Mb down limit a few times, but it's usually between 8.5-9.5.
If I'm forced to use Sprint's 3G speeds to do anything, I want to rip my hair out. Sometimes I think it's all the messing around with my phone I've done, but man...the 3G speeds are horrendously slow.

I know 4G been out got the longest, but many of us don't get to use it. As much as they advertise 4G, I never knew what 4G was actually capable of. I'm sure if I didn't know the full capabilities of 4G, there is many others who don't know it either. At &T advertises talk and surf the internet at the same time, when I asked sprint about 4G, the only answer I get is that its faster.
And lol xopher.hunter, I also thought 4G was a $10 a month myth.

I can't love something I don't have, sorry OP.
If you don't have it at home and don't have Wifi, don't try it when you are somewhere that has it because you wont want to use your phone ever again on 3g. I really hope the slow expansion of 4g is because they are going to roll out LTE. I got my OG Epic on launch day, activated it, turned on 4g and have had it ever since. I have literally only used 3g four times and one of those was to run Speedtest. Maybe it would be more fair if those that have never had 4g got LTE first but that's not likely.

I believe you. KC is pulling that however there are still parts of KC that pulls 3g and edge. I have done the speed tests on that area (3x each). I believe that areas that are mentioned to have HSPA+ are probably still being boosted seeing how the network is still kinda new. I have noticed some members posting their speed results in places like Texas and the results are phenomenal.

Yep. I can attest to that. At work, the HSPA+ speed is beautiful. I can browse endlessly while tethering.
Although for some reason at home it says I have HSPA+ yet I lose data constantly, and it goes from HSPA+ to Edge, totally skipping 3G. Either way, I have no complaints since I can just use WiFi. It has worked well everywhere else since I got the phone.

I agree I've had a 4g device for almost a year now with 4g not even driving distance away...I have to travel about a little over an hour, maybe a little more, to get 4g in the city, they got to do something or have a backup plan...I don't think the kyoceras working...
I though it was Sprint's plan to move on without them? I read an article a couple weeks ago that a bunch of Sprint execs had resigned from Clearwire's board. This was just before they announced (or at least rumors began) of moving to LTE.
Doesn't surprise me that Verizon will have their 4g reaching more customers in 1 year than we have now.. I love Sprint, but, they are behind at&t/verizon for a reason.
I have had an EVO since launch and only used 4g on a brief trip out of town. It now looks like I will be upgrading to another phone without ever really using 4g on my EVO. That's sad.
I guess people thought VZW was lying when they said they'd have their entire 3G network covered with LTE by 2013.

Clear has been having LTE tests in AZ and the wimax equipment as I understand it will be super easy to upgrade to LTE - then sprint releases the LTE devices and BOOM LTE is everywhere that WIMax Was..

sprint always tries to bring new tech first...
but always seem to fail in the follow through.

I agree with this, in my area Sprint consistently pulls about 200-400 kbps down on 3G. A friend with VZW showed me his 3G speed test results - routinely around 1500-1700. If I had speeds like that, I wouldn't ever even want or need 4G.
I like Sprint, but man their 3G is very disappointing. During lunch hour on weekdays, I've seen it drop to nearly 50 kbps. It makes me yearn for the days of blazing fast dialup modems... :/

They are saying they will have 4g in my area by the end of the year ... I will believe it when I see it lol
So I took my wife to get a new phone yesterday, and got her away from BB and onto Android. She wanted the Inspire 4G, (she liked the extra real estate), while I have the Atrix. Great I thought, another phone to play with!!!
Before I jump into breaking down her new phone, I will let her get used to it, but I did want to do side by side speed tests between the Atrix and Inspire, so I ran several tests this morning after completing an OTA update for the Inspire so it has the current software. Atrix is on 4.1.83, GingerBlur 3.1.
The results I got were interesting. (This is in the Boston, MA area, using Speedtest on the Boston Comcast server).
The Atrix hovers right around 2.5 Mbps to 3 Mbps d/l, and consistently at 1.2 Mbps u/l. Ping averaging around 140ms.
The Inspire runs 3.5 Mbps to 4.5 Mbps d/l and 330 Kbps u/l. Ping averaging around 300ms.
Speeds over my wireless network are identical with 16Mbps d/l and 3 Mbps u/l.
I know the reason for the difference in upload speeds.............the Inspire is obviously still capped at the same rate the Atrix was. What I don't like is the fact that the d/l is hugely different, to the tune of almost double in some instances. The Atrix is also much more erratic in d/l speeds, while the Inspire consistently rises over the duration of the test in a much smoother fashion.
I am going to have fun playing around with both these phones as time goes on, and now I have a mission to prove without a doubt through testing that I have the better phone!
On a side note, I made the AT&T store go quiet for a moment. Most of the employees had black shirts on with a big 4G logo on them. I said loudly that I would like a shirt, but I want the one with "4G..........we lied to you" on it. All went quiet, and I of course did not receive a response. (I had a few beers before we went in to the store).
You can unlock hsupa with a custom Tom or flash radio, they already released the update.
I had an inspire, much better and more reliable data speeds, but its just too big for me.

Hotmail, Live, and MSN email auto configuration settings update.
Makes the email set up process much easier and includes the most current settings for each type of email.
Increased potential data speed at which data can travel on the network.
And I can confirm through testing this device side by side with my Atrix the upload speed is stuck at 330kbps exactly the same as the Atrix was before 4.1.83. Note the word "potential" from the HTC site.
I already put this pic in another thread so don't troll me cause of that.

Pretty big difference between Sprint and WiFi, which is useless when I still cannot make or receive calls... Here's the bottom line people. Read the Sprint forums and listen to iPhone users *****ing that Sprint has crippled "their data service" Really? LMFAO! It's the iPhone users that have crippled service for everyone else. I think since they have flooded "our data network" that those of us who have garbage service right now should be flooding Sprint's call center and demanding they do something about it. No fees, no Premium Data charges, service credit, something! A few people cant get anything done but several thousand can.

3g isn't impressive at all but I am happy with my 4g speed considering its unlimited . 1.2 to 1.4Mbps download isn't great but I never use 3g anyway

We were supposed to have 4g a year ago and don't and won't ever have it. Its the iPhone users causing the data issues and Sprints poor decision to carry it on this old network. Im guessing people with good 3g service don't have many iPhone users in their area.

If you read the stories, people are complaining that the iPhone is getting much slower data than other Sprint phones in side by side comparisons, same time same location.
Seriously, I hate iPhones as much as you do, but why are you blaming them for your crappy service? They don't use any more data than high end android phones. Sounds like the tower in your area has an issue. Maybe they are doing maintenance.
I just ran a speedtest at my house, which has always been a low signal area. (side of a hill, shadowed from the tower). Today I'm getting 2 bars (never seen more than 3 here, usually get 1 or zero.) and in 3 tests I got a low of 226 kbps and a high of 320 kbsp on 3G. Pretty normal for the location. Trust me, the iPhone is everywhere in this neighborhood.

I doubt they're doing maintenance. We're usually the last city for anything with Sprint, and this bad service started for me also right after the iPhone launch, it could be anything, but it coincides with that.
And what sucks is the week of the iPhone launch I was able to download the cm7 ROM in less then 30 minutes, now I'm lucky to get 1 bar of signal if I hold the phone just right.
Sent from my SPH-D700
My signal has been wavering in the last few weeks. I go back-and-forth between 4 bars to none. I live in a metropolitan area that too was promised 4G over a year ago by sales representatives in-store. (Yea... no need to comment on that. I already know the responses, ha ha.)
If you are unhappy, you have three options:
Leave Sprint for another carrier.
Call Sprint and complain. You may be able to get some type of monetary and/or technical assistance for the issues.
Do nothing and enjoy the wonders of Sprint's "marvelous" network.
The last option is my tactic for now, as I want to give Sprint the opportunity to fix their coverage in my area. Though my patience is wearing thin.

I too get between 1.0 to 1.4 Mps with my 3g speeds.
You need to talk to sprint about getting air rave or change your prl to verizon or something. Those speeds are just sorry.

Shut up man You're killing me with your "super" 3G speeds..
I just posted on twitter yesterday about this. I'm getting .25-200kbps down and 24kbps up. :-(
It's been like this for months. I got the next 4 months free though, so I can't really complain. They are currently upgrading capacity in my area. I can't take this much longer.
Nice to see you
My 3g is fast and signal is always good where I live.. switch carriors if your area doesn't have good services .....

Sounds like you're getting what you're paying for!
In all seriousness, pathetic speeds, but their customer service at least seems good. I can't complain around here... Just pulled 1057/370 on 3G.
I just pulled 653kb down and 459kb up. Not as bad as some (Rob) but still pretty pathetic.
@John: Between your super 3G speeds and the battery life shots Zigg & Paul keep sending me from their Nexus S's, I'm a sad panda here.
Has anyone else had problems with 4g connecting todayin the baltimore area?
At my work location in Long Island, I get the same speeds with Sprint 3G as I get on Verizon 1x (RoamControl) = pathetic. It is indoors but close to a window. 2 bars with Sprint, 5 with VZW. Once Prime is released, methinks it's goodbye Sprint, hello VZW data caps
Hang in there. I can honestly say I was in your boat for months here. They finally rolled out extra capacity in my city last Thursday. I'm getting 1.5 MBits/sec at last.
Before that, I was getting 50kbps down, or sometimes it would timeout.
But you should call in and file a complaint. I'd imagine problems tend to get fixed faster on the technicians queues with more complaints.
That network speed test that your using will get you mixed results. Change your closest tower in the setting and try again. I was getting the same results whe I picked my hometown kalamazoo, mi. But when I picked chicago. My speed went up. I notice this while doing a speed test on my home computer. Then when I had my wifi on my phone I was getting a third of the speeed I should of.

I'm on Fleming Island and the best I can get is Edge, and it's inconsistant. I really wanted this $30 plan to work for me, but I have my doubts now. What good is unlimited data if you can't access it? I also have a Straight Talk (AT&T) sim, which does much better but costs $20 more per month. I'm going to talk to the folks at the T-Mo store and see what they have to say.
I can't say anythign about where you are at, sorry.
I have the $30 dollar plan too. And I am pretty new with it. I traveled to Iowa this last weekend... I had no data at all pretty much all weekend.
T-Mobile's coverage is just not good, once outside any lager metro areas. Back in Charlotte (where I live now) the data speeds are usually very good. But even in Charlotte proper there are spots that are dead. I was used to Verizon before this and I knew coverage wasn't going to be the same on T-Mobile. But for now, I am still happy with saving over a 1000 dollars per year over Verizon between me and my wife.
It's a good deal... but the coverage is not like Verzion or even ATT... that is for sure.

Yep, I've been having problems in Tampa. Even though the signal is fine, the data connection seems to drop out. Can't figure out if it's T-Mobile or my phone.
Im in sw florida right between Sarasota and Fort Myers and my data has been intermittent the last 2 days saying its connected but no data goes though then it will work fine. And ive been on edge alot, only had tmo for 3 days but when i was with them 2+ years ago i was definitely getting better reception than what ive seen so far.
Hmm, seems like maybe a Florida issue then. I've got the same thing, good signal (2-4 bars) but poor/inconsistent data. Streaming from Tune In Radio has been an exercise in frustration this week, when prior it was fine. I wonder if they're just doing network improvement/overhaul, or if something's wrong. I'm on Straight Talk and I'm seriously considering an AT&T SIM.

I dont think straight talk sells att sims anymore. Not on their website at least.
They still do, they're just out of supplies. At least that's the last thing I read about that.

When I am at my Mom's house in Edgewater, east coast just south of Daytona and the data is terrible. Most of the time its edge network. I've noticed pretty much anything coastal is hit or miss with Tmobile. I can be driving my boat down the Intercoastal waterway and get hspa+ for a mile then nothing but edge the rest of the way.
I'm in Orange Park and get great service. Coming from Verizon it is just as fast, if not faster. I rarely have an issue with signal either.

Im thinking that tmo must be doing something with their network because tonight ive been switching between 3g and H+ over and over. I live like right next to the tower too so I always have full service where I live.
Last week I could stream internet radio with no trouble at all, but this week I can't go more than five minutes. My wife, in a different area of Jax, is having the same issues.

T-Mobile is doing a ton of stuff with the network I know this because I work for them. Also, this phone only says H+
when its actually using data so you may just be seeing that... We are installing LTE towers in big cities right now too.
We just put one on top of our building a couple days ago...
Good to know i just came from Verizon and im used to the phone just staying on 4g instead of connecting on demand. You know if there will be any LTE in the near future in sw florida?

Honestly I don't know, but do expect a nationwide rollout of T Mobile LTE starting sometime this year
Amazing...I'm next door to you in Fleming Island and its horrible. Rarely get data outside of WiFi. Hope it improves as I love the $30 plan...if it'd just work

I doubt things are going to get better in places like Fleming Island. T-Mobile has seemingly never been very interested in expanding its network, merely improving what's already there in core markets.
As for my issue of a sudden dip in reliability, my data connection seems to have gone back to normal these last couple days, which supports the theory that they were working on maintenance or overhaul.

I'm in Jacksonville and I get pretty good data. Sometimes it does drop to 2-5mbps in spotty areas. But I'm generally between 12-20mbps. This blows away my old service and i couldn't be happier.
Edit: here's a few tests done in a few different areas.

Lucky!
I get the 2-5 in my house like... always. I usually have to go to a somewhat busier area to get at least like 16 and up. Usually at intersections like Beach and Hodges, Atlantic and Kernan... or maybe even the St. John's Town Center. If you're familiar with those. :silly:
I've always had crappy service IN my house though.
JaylanPHNX, you still having issues?
