[Q] Boot SD Card Question - Nook Color Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am new to Nook Color.
I am wanting to Run CM7 from an SD card and found a website that offers one prebuilt. I dont mind learning at all and would like to make one myself.
The question is, the premade one has some sort of a countdown built in where
I can choose to let it auto countdown and it will boot to CM.
If I want to boot to the Stock Nook Software, I can press a button during the countdown and do that without having to removed the SD Card.
Where would i Find the instructions on this?

This is built in to your standard SD card install I believe. Once you made the card I'm pretty sure you can hold down the N button to get a boot selection screen.

if you do a search in the dev forum here, verygreen's agnostic SD install has a boot that gives you the option to either boot the default (priority without being modified is SD), or go into boot choice menu, where you can choose to boot from the Nook itself (EMMC) or into recovery mode.
The instructions he provides are very clear, if you run into any problems feel free to ask us.
I say this because I *really, really hate* morally corrupt vendors that sell SD card installs of _open source, freely developed_ ROMS without any reference or compensation to the people who put in their free time to make them for us.
I can't tell you how many times I've met people at B&N who say, "Well I know a guy who will sell me an SD card for $50, is that a good price?" Makes me breathe fire every time.

The pre-made card offers a choice when you first boot up, either CM7 or the stock ROM. You do not have to remove the card.

If you install CM7 or MiUi on an SD card, power up holding the N button, you have a choice of that ROM or stock Nook.. You do not have to remove your SD card..

OP,
I would suggest you doing it on your own, it isn't that hard, if I can do, you can do also, plus you will have vastly help from others if hitting problem.
What you need is a Sandisk 8G or 16G class 4.
We'll guide you through.
About the "dual-boot" option, I don't do it but I strongly believe our patruns is an expert about this. If it isn't patruns, I'll dig into the post and find out who is the one.

Yes, That is what i am after. However i refuse to pay $50+ for a prebuilt card
I read up on the thread mentioned,
Thanks for the Replys

I made my card and got CM 7.1 loaded.
I am still looking for a countdown boot menu that automatically comes up wanting to boot to either the SD card or Internal Memory

Honeycomb Advice for New Nook (Blue Dot)

I picked up a new Nook Color running software version 1.2.0 and would like to get Honeycomb running off an sd card. I tried deeperblue's approach. The files transferred to the card, I inserted it into the slot and turned on the Nook. The screen stayed black, then said loading for a second. After that the screen was still black and just said 'Android_' down the right side in a small font. I let it sit for a while (10-15 min?) before shutting down the Nook.
Am I doing something wrong? Is there a different approach I should be taking?
Thank you!
I actually did the same thing. I was able to get the Android screen but I have no access to Wifi. I noticed no one answered here but have you since found a solution. I also sent an email to the Developer I purchased the card from. If I get help from there, I will send it on to you.
This will teach me not to try to do this stuff when I should be sleeping... My issue with the blinking 'Android_' on the screen was due to the SD card not being pushed in all the way. Try that... it worked for me.
I am still curious if there is a newer/better honeycomb mod to run off the sd card.
Create one of those bootable Clockworkmod SD cards.
Any 512MB or 1GB micro-sd should work just fine.
Once you create it and boot with Clockworkmod - do a full nandroid backup of your Nook.
Once thats done - copy the nandroid backup dump to your computer and burn a couple copies to CD's or DVD.
That way, you can go ahead and test and flash whatever Rom you want to your Nook,
and you can always restore it back to factory default.
BUT - big BUT - do not flash Clockworkmod to your Nook!
Always clockworkmod boot off the SD card.
That way its always easy to recover back to stock.
I was running nookie froyo off a 16GB - class 6 SD card and it was OK, but still slow.
Running off the internal memory is MUCH faster.

The source code is not available for Honeycomb so there will never be a newer/better mod. If you really like the look of Honeycomb, run CM7 with a Honeycomb theme.

[Q] What to install...

I just bought a Nook Color for my girl and wanna root and install a costum Rom...since this is my first time doing this to a nook color (i have done this to my G1,Vibrant and Asus transformer) i wonder what is the most stable Rom?
should i go with Cm7 or Honeycomb?
Keep in mind that i'm looking for stable Rom...i don't want to get my girl mad at me..
Thanks in Advance..
Get a microSD card, and install CM7 onto that. You protect the B&N system, so you won't void the warranty. The entire OS and apps sit on the SD card. The Nook will attempt to boot to the SD card first, so you're golden. Any time you want to be back in the B&N mode - just pull the SD card. No need to root or anything.
Go here for the easy-to-read steps on how to make it happen:
http://quinxy.com/2011/04/01/comple...on-the-nook-color/comment-page-3/#comment-944
Even if you were to mess things up you can always restore the stock rom because it boots from the SD card. That's what's so awesome. I would also agree with cm7. There is a sticky in the apps thread that has a good start on what apps you should download first. Some are paid and some are free. Have fun!
I totally recommend Racks11479's Phiremod/Honeycomb dualboot MicroSD image. It automatically boots into Phiremod (CM7 variant) but also gives you the option to boot into Honeycomb if you want to play with that and an option to boot into stock Nook Color software without taking the MicroSD out. Very nice. Also, if you're worried about stability I highly recommend getting a class 4 Sandisk card to run it off of. If you read through some of the forums this seems to be the best card for running ROMS smoothly. You can find the Phiremod/Honeycomb image here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1045018
Good luck!
And first thing make sure you have a SanDsik microSD card.
It can be a 4/8/16 gb class 2/4 card.
There are a lot of nookers who start out with the wrong card and have a lot of problems later on, not to mention waste of money for those high class cards.
Again good luck.
Echo everything that's been said in this thread.
You have all the right answers posted to get your feet wet without worry.
If you don't want to use the (more experimental) honeycomb on the sd install, just ignore it when you boot it and it goes to the more stable phiremod version of CM7 by default.
The memory card advice is no joke. If you get a whole mess of force-close issues running the rom recommended above from an sd install, it's either a bad download, bad flash, or (90% likely) you need the right memory card.
My sig has the link to the thread if you want to know why SanDisk.

Questions about CM7...

I have tried looking for these, but it's been a long night of not understanding some of this stuff and I've gotten to that dreaded, "I give up, this isn't worth it" point. Because of this I may simply not be seeing the answers right in front of me. These are the things I don't understand right now.
1. I've followed the steps to the letter about installing CM7 on an SD card. Then I try to follow the steps to get gapps on there and can't boot into recovery. I don't think I actually can boot into recovery from sd but it doesn't say no anywhere. Confused.
2. I don't get why there is a dialer on the ROM. It's so strange that it makes me question whether I did something wrong. Am I the only one that thinks this is wierd or is there some backstory to why it's been left built into the ROM? There's gotta be some reason.
3. Still can't find anything that tells me how I would go about installing apps that I have apk files for on my computer, where I copy them to on my sd card, and where I put other files (pdfs, docs, videos, music) that I want to be able to run.
4. Is an sd card ROM install REALLY the same as booting from the nook itself? Or dual-booting? I feel like it couldn't possibly be the same speed or fluidity. i need to have the ROM but I also need easy access to the actual Nook.
Again, I'm probably wrong in my thinking with some of these things, but very often, even in noob guides, these questions aren't really addressed directly. Anyway, if someone can help me understand these things, I'd really appreciate it. I'm almost at my wit's end fishing for these answers.
Thanks, guys.
1) Just let cm7 load up. Then hold power. A menu comes up. Select reboot. Then select recovery. Then it will do its thing.
2) Cyanogenmod's builds it rom for multiple devices, most of which are phones, so there are items in the rom that pertain to phones ie. dialer.
3) Apks can be placed on any storage area of sd card, or even emmc for that matter, all you need is a file explore like Astro or I believe cm7 rom comes with a file explore. Then just go to the location where you saved the apk and you will be given the option to install the apk.
4)This depends on your sd card. Sandisk cards are the pick of the litter and provide a good user experience. If you use a less worthy sd card then yes there will be lag and it will be less fluid. I myself am on emmc but my friend is on a sandisk card and both perform pretty much the same.

1. To boot into recovery easily boot into CM7 then on the homescreen hold down the power button until the power off menu appears choose "reboot", in the next menu choose "recovery" and press "OK". The nook would reboot straight into recovery.
2. Those apps are included to allow more apps to show up in the market. You didn't do anything wrong.
3.To install APK applications on your Android phone do the following:
Copy the APK file you want to install to your phone's memory card and insert the card into your Android phone.
Go to Android Market and search for the Apps Installer, App Installer, z-App Installer or Fast Installer application.
Open it and click on the Install button.
After it is installed, just open it. It will show you all the APK files stored directly in the root directory of your memory card.
Just click on the application you want to install and it will be installed.
You could also just install a file manager app like Astro File Manager and then browse to the APK and install it.
4. Depends on the SD card if you using a sandisk card there isn't really any difference but eMMC is always going to be at least a little bit faster and SD cards are more likely to fail quicker but if your using a sandisk you really shouldn't have a problem.
Hope that helps.

Try putting your sd card back into your computer and put the google apps zip in the boot partition again. Then try the steps mentioned above.
That tiny partition is your boot partition there should be others that were created for storage purposes. I think verygreens process creates 4 partitions. You might need partitioning software to see the other partitions if your computer does not recognize them.
Edit: This thread has some info on the partition software http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1187625
I dont know, Im thinking I might not have recovery. Is that even possible?
I had first used the microsd card to try a Honeycomb ROM and then used win32diskimager to place the cm7 rom on there thinking it would completely write over what was there. Should I have formatted instead?
Maybe this is an opportunity to try the rc 7.1?
Sent from the XDA App
Yes I would suggest that you format and start from the beginning using verygreens process http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1000957 and CM 7.1 rc.
As far as recovery no you do not have recovery such as clockwork mod per-say. This part of the process doesn't take you to a recovery menu. What it does is initiate the install process of the google apps zip.
I don't see a 7.1. I only see these: ??

Hey guys,
Thanks for all the help last night. Really appreciate it.
I still don't get how I'm supposed to copy media to the microsd when I can only access a small part of it. This is all I can see on Windows Explorer.
How do I put a 600MB video file on the card or anything else (music, documents, etc) if I only have room for this much??

What you are seeing is the boot partition. Your storage is on the 4th partition. To access your storage space you should transfer it over through the nook via USB.

Ok, cool. Thanks.
Actually, that is because when you created the image to on the card the software only formatted as much as it needed for the image and left the rest unformatted. Download EaseUS to your PC and you can then stretch the unformatted partition out or create an additional one and get your space back. The app is here and it is free: http://www.partition-tool.com/personal.htm

Even so, you can only access it through usb via the NOOK, at least on Windows since it only sees the very first FAT32 partition, which appears to be the boot partition.
You guys are awesome. I've totally come to understand better this whole process. I was at that deep-end point last night where nothing was making sense, everything was coming out wrong, and ai was ready to give up. Now I have a pretty smooth running and sweet cm7 nook color. I wish it could run Honeycomb but alas... maybe in time.
For now, the only thing missing for me is to know what the best video player is for CM7 and whether Flash runs on this ROM or not in browsers.
Thanks, guys.

[Q] Nook Color Rooting Issue.

New here, yes I did look around. Found lots of other good info, but not this. If I missed it, feel free to remove my man card. I just got a nook color for x-mas yay me. I have followed two guides:
Well I tried to post two links but that wont work. I understand. Anyway, one guide is called How to Install CyanogenMod 7 on the Nook Color (PC Version), found it on Youtube. Other is called How to: Root a Nook Color, install CyanogenMod 7, and overclock it off of icrontic.com Hope that helps.
I am using at 8gb version to write to SD card. I copy both files over without un-ziping them. Follow all directions. However nook will not boot into Cyanogen. I just get the normal nook boot up. I have tried several times. I am new to the whole rooting thing and have seen people post different versions of the same file. Not sure if that has anything to do with it.
Lastly,
Nook firmware: 1.3
Not using a Scan Disk SD card.
I assume you want to enjoy the beauty of CM7.
Before guiding you, a very first basic question needs to be asked: do you want/intend to run CM7 on eMMC or off the uSD?
I assume you want to enjoy the beauty of CM7.
Before guiding you, a very first basic question needs to be asked: do you want/intend to run CM7 on eMMC or off the uSD?
Well I didn't know there were other options other than CM7. I have also been told that is one is the best all around one out there. You will have to excuse my ignorance but what is eMMC and uSD?
Don't worry, we all learn something day to day.
CM7 is a custom ROM (or OS if you want to call it), which replaced the stock OS by many of us. It is one of the most used ROM out there for NC (short cut for NOOKcolor)
In order to run/use CM7 on the NC, there are 2 choices:
1. Installing and running it (CM7) from the internal memory (a.k.a. eMMC) or
2. Booting and running it (CM7) from the external uSD card
You can spend the whole day searching for the difference in details, here, I just give you some quick thinking of the 2.
Running from eMMC = more complicate installation process, smooth performance, a lot less FC's (Force Close = applications hung), easy to backup, more storage. But you will void the B&N warranty since you delete their original stock OS.
Booting off uSD is a quick way to explore the beauty of CM7 or any custom ROM WITHOUT effecting the stock OS, meaning still under warranty. Down side is you need to have a 8GB or 16GB Sandisk class 4, which probably costs about $20 (onsale for 16GB).
Ok does it have to be a Scandisk sd card? I thought loading CM7 via SD card removed the warranty also. A side question I have. I saw on youtube someone was able to "dual boot" the nook OS with the CM7 OS. They could swap back and forth, any idea what this is about? Sorry I don't have much more information on it than that.
If loading through SD card does not void warranty I would prefer that for the time being until I get the hang of this stuff more. Then again a fully rooted nook is basically a android tablet+nook. The only reason I would want the warranty is if something inside were to break.
Would the reason why my attempt didn't work be related to the fact that I didn't have a Scandisk SD card?

No, it does not have to be a Sandisk but Sandisk (class 4) is the best (have been tested) on the market. You can use any other brands, it might work and might not. Therefore, if you intend to run CM7 off uSD, Sandisk is strongly RECOMMENDED. If you use the uSD as an additional storage, any brand is OK.

No, it does not. Running off uSD has zero effect on stock OS.

A lot of people mistype or mis-use the term "dual-boot"
AFAIK, there is 2 kinds of "dual-boot" (one of them is incorrectedly used)
a. Leaving stock OS on eMMC and booting CM7 off uSD.
b. Installing 2 different ROMs on eMMC.
I personally choose to say b. should be called "dual-boot", not a. but a lot of people calling a. as "dual-boot". I don't mind.
What your question is for item a.
All you have to do is during powering up, press and hold the "N" button then select booting Normal, it will boot into whatever on the eMMC (i.e. stock OS) even having CM7 uSD plugged in.
If loading through SD card does not void warranty I would prefer that for the time being until I get the hang of this stuff more. Then again a fully rooted nook is basically a android tablet+nook. The only reason I would want the warranty is if something inside were to break.

I don't know what you're doing so can't say.
What have you done?
Ok sorry it took me a little bit to get back to you guys. I work the night shift so it can be a pain and make you seem like a ghost.
So I downloaded a file called 8gb_clockwork-0.7. Used a program called Win32 Diskmanager to write that file to the SD card. I have an 8gb SD card. Not Scandisk.
I then copied over two file that are .zip files. I did not un-zip them. Files are gapps-gb-20110307-signed and update-cm-7.0.3-encore-signed.
I am using my phone as a micro SD card reader. Could that be causing issues?
Everything I read said to do what I just said/did. I then pop in the SD card into the nook. My nook then boots up normally, I.E. standard nook OS.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you.
Again, it goes back to my question in post #2.
Before getting an answer from you, I cannot provide any more help.
In fact, I don't want to guide you through the wrong direction.
I would like to run it off of the USB drive until I get familiar with it. Just in case I do not like it. As this is my first time rooting something I would like to keep my options open.

I assume you meant to run CM7 off uSD (you said USB drive???)
Anyway, if that's the case, what you have done was incorrect.
Forget about it, start over again.
With your not Sandisk uSD card, I wouldn't recommend but if you have to use it, then go with it for now.
1. download "win32diskimager" (I hope you already it)
2. download the "Size-agnostic SD" v1.3 imager from this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1000957
3. try this ROM (build 12122011) as many others like it from this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1344873
4. download this GApp (20110828) for CM7 from this link: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=Latest_Version
5. try to follow verygreen's instructions from the link that I posted in step 2.
If you not able to or hitting issue, get back here for more help
Will do. Thanks again for all the help. Also yes I did mean uSD :/ I will try this Wednesday during the day and get back to you as I am about to start another shift.

[Q] Please help!!! Noobie messed up NC (big time)

I have a Nook Color. Somehow (and I really can't recall how), I can no longer get to the B&N side of my Nook. Even with the micro-SD out, I still go directly into CYANOGEN. To make matters worse, every single app I try to get from the market will not download. Once I 'Accept & download', the app starts to download then I get an Error overlay screen: "name-of-software" could not be downloaded due to an error.
So I have a V--E--R--Y generic tablet that can't do much. Please help.
Thanx in advance...................................
How did you go about installing CM7? Did you install it to the internal storage?
Please help!!! Noobie messed up NC (big time)
That's part of the problem. I did not consciously install to internal memory, I wanted it to boot from the SD card.
That's what I did...
That's what I did once. I unwittingly installed it onto the internal memory. It also happened to be really buggy. I restored it to stock using Clockworkmod Recovery. Did you use the installer for the SD card?
On a 16GB microSD, I used Win32DiskImager to write 1gb_clockwork-3.2.0.1-eyeballer to a newly-formatted SD card.
I put the ZIP file for: gapps-gb-20110828-signedgapps-gb-20110828-signed, and gapps-gb-20110828-newtalk-signed.
I tried the home-power key combo. It asks me if I'm sure that I want to restore to the factory. I say "Yes" but when the Nook starts up, I'm still in cyanogen mod.
Should I (re-)format the MicroSD, write 1gb_clockwork-3.2.0.1-eyeballer (or another version) then move recovery-clockwork-3.2.0.1-encore?
Aside from not being able to get back to B&N-supplied software, I can't do anything with the NC as an Android tablet.
OP, do you intend to install CM7 into the internal memory?
All I'm trying to accomplish is to get back to the factory NC settings. Once I can get there, I'll decide.
How to hard reset and Factory Default Nook Color - http://goo.gl/pSFui
Power down your NC. Wait approximately 10 seconds or so-- just give it a bit of a break between shut down and factory reset.
Press and hold power button and your "N" home button almost simultaneously-- press Power first and then the N.
Hold these until your screen flashes the "Touch the future of reading" message; hold for a second or two afterward, then release. You will then get a prompt asking if you want to reset your nook to factory. Press the home button to continue. It will ask you to confirm. Press the home key again. Your nook will deregister, reset, and when it reboots, you will see "Kate" in her tutorial video, as if you'd never registered it in the first place.
(Obviously your account info will still be valid-- simply register with your email/pw combo instead of creating a new account.)
Hope this helps- if so please click thanks

I did this (more than once - grrrrrrrrrrrrr!). I never see the "touch the future....." message. Instead, I get a cyanogen mod 7 screen with the message "Booting into Recovery". Then I get a sickly yellow-greenish screen that asks (twice) if I want to teset. I confirm both times then it "wipes" the data. It then boots into a cyanogen mod 7 screen (and the skateboarding 'droid) and I go through the registration process.
Now, when I select a Google app, the downloading (Google Maps) seems to be taking forever, but at least I'm not getting the error I got before.
Also, I do not see the progress of the download that I'm used to seeing on my phone. All I see is "movement" under the "Downloading..." message. How long do I leave it before I abort the download?
Your micro sd card is removed right?

Eyeballer is a clockwork recovery bootable SD image which is used to install stuff (e.g. CM7) to internal memory.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1030227
VeryGreen (size agnostic thread) is the SD image which creates a full OS on the SD card itself leaving the internal memory alone.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1000957
You have used the Eyeballer method and have therefore done an internal install. You must also have installed a CM7 zip not just the gapps zip as they are just google apps and not an actual ROM.
You have 2 ways forward.
The simplest is if you want to end up with internal CM7 and are not interested in running the B & N ROM. Start again by creating the Eyeballer SD card using win32diskImager. Make sure you use a real USB SD adapter and not a card slot on a laptop. Put onto the card the CM7 ROM zip. I recommend the one from the KANG MiRaGe thread in the development forum. It is the most up to date and stable version available at the moment. Also put on one gapps zip (20110828). Now put the card in Nook, Power up and when in recovery then use the menus to format system, data and cache. Do NOT format boot. Then flash the CM7 ROM zip, then the gapps zip. Power down and prepare a clean SD card either by reformatting the eyeballer card with something like the HP USB card utility or a partition manager in the PC like miniTools. You could also use a different SD card if you want to keep the eyeballer one for future use. Put the card back in, power up and you should now be in a stable CM7 environment where you can set up wifi, register with the Google market and download apps.
The second way if you really want to return to stock on the internal and run CM7 of the SD card then use the eyeballer method but instead of flashing CM7 and gapps you now use a return to stock zip. Make sure you still format the partitions as before.

Once you have it back to stock and upgraded to whatever stock you want then follow the VeryGreen method from the link above. Once the SD card has put CM7 on itself, do not worry that there is only a 114MB space if you ever put the card back in the PC. That is normal; it is just the boot partition that the PC sees. The rest of the card can be seen if you USB connect the Nook to the PC.
Yes it is. Also, even though I'm not getting an error, no apps are loading.
You absolutely rock!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm back at the NC "baseline". I tried to go back to a 1.2 (which is what it came with) using "update-nc-stock-1.2-signed". Once I re-booted, it kept returning to the NOOK COLOR screen. Then I used a 1.0.1 from your last post. It came back fine with 2 exceptions. 1) I now have a message that I need to install a SD card. When I do, my (Windows Explorer) "Computer" screen only recognizes the SD card and not the Nook. These are piddly little issues, but if I can get them fixed, great! (Right now, I cannot upgrade the NC or move any books or load any apps.
Thanks again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That's part of the problem. I did not consciously install to internal memory, I wanted it to boot from the SD card.

I had this same problem. Since I am a new member, and can't post links, I'm going to try to help.
Install Clockwork Recovery to an SD card. Yes, the same way you did when installing clockwork to the SD the first time.
There are some threads on other fourms (google is your friend) that have links to Update files that allow you to update while keeping clockwork recovery, and some that will remove clockwork recovery. If you can remove the SD card and boot into the Stock Nook OS, then don't worry about installing 1.0.0 or 1.0.1 like some of the forms say. Just place the .ZIP file of the hacked update (usually 1.3 or 1.4 I think) into the root folder of the SD card, then Install it on your NC just like installing CM7 onto the internal memory. Your nook should start working again. It restored mine to full functionality. I can now pay 3 Dollars for angry birds, but at least its not as terribly slow and laggy as it was with CM7.

I had the same issue last weekend, somehow my internal memory had become unrecognizable to anything, and the local Barnes and Noble store had a SD card that repartitioned the internal memory, and I was back in business. And as an added bonus I now have the 4 GB app/BN partition and the 1 GB mostly useless partition.

The instructions I see when googling around where I see that image mentioned are instructions for installing onto the Nook Color internal memory.
In the simplest case, making an n2a card is much less complicated than that ~ all you need is on the PC, write the size agnostic image, then drop in the CM7 build you want to use, then put the card in the Nook and it creates itself. There are upsides and downsides to different n2a methods, but that one seems to be the easiest ~ I've done it successfully several times, and I'm certainly nothing like an expert when it comes to these Android systems.
A recovery card image will make a bootable recovery card ... and while that might not have been what you needed to get what you want, its what you need to get the nook back to stock.
You might want to go to
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=22809801&postcount=148
... to get a version of the 1.4.1 upgrade that your recovery card can install. You'll probably have to wipe all sorts of partitions, which means you'll have to sign in with the B&N store again and you'll get to download you B&N apps again, but that's pretty straightforward.
This OP in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=10623716&postcount=1
... says that it will be necessary to format ("wipe") the /data and /system partitions, but it doesn't seem like you'll lose anything you want to keep. After all, you've either overwritten or completely tangled up your stock B&N info.
That post above has 1.4.1. There should be a signed 1.4.2 lying around somewhere, but if not, once its back to stock, you can update to 1.4.2 the normal way, download the B&N update file, drop it in the root of the Nook, make sure its at least 30% charged, and let it go to sleep, which will run the update file.
