[Q] Doesnt boot to Stock ROM

Can someone please identify/resolve my problem?
PROBLEM:
CANNOT BOOT TO STOCK NC 1.2 ROM
Whenever I try to boot, with microSD card inserted, I boot to ClockworkModRecovery. Inside CWM Recovery Console, version states it's 3.0.2.8. In ROM Manager, it says it's 3.2.0.1. (Because at some point in time, I tried to update it through the Rom Manager. It did say that it was updated successfully, but whenever I boot to CWM, it still says 3.0.2.8.
Whenever I try to boot, without microSD card inserted, I boot to CM7 Nightly Build 97. What appears is a green cyanogenmod logo followed by a cyan-colored "loading..." below, then a flash, then straight to the CM7 boot screen (the blue android on skateboard).
FACTS:
[*]I'm currently running CM7 Nighty Build 97 along with Dalingrin's OC Kernel set at 1200MHz (Which made it a lot responsive and faster, thanks to Dalingrin! ) at my NC.
[*]I have to remove the microSD in order to boot to CM7. If I don't remove the microSD, it goes to CWM.
[*]I don't know, I don't have, and I'm not planning to install --- ADB.
[*]My microSD is a SAMSUNG 16GB Class 2 microSD card--at least, that's what it says on the card--which came from a Red Sandisk packaging. Weird, I know. Just putting all the info here, maybe it'll help solve the problem.
[*]My NC came with a green dot on it's packaging. I was told it has something to do with the partitioning of it's internal memory, but from what I can see, my NC has 5GB of internal memory capacity.
THE STORY:
Before, I was running CM7 7.0.3 (Stable) on my nook.
With microSD inserted, I boot to CM7. What happens is there would be a flashing, cyan 'a n d r o i d . . .' text at the left side of the screen. Afterwards, the CM7 logo appears and boots to CM7.
With microSD removed, I boot to STOCK NC 1.2 ROM. What happens is a "Read Forever" logo would appear, then a colored 'n' logo, then 'nook color' logo, then home screen.
Then I found out that there's a way to overclock the NC but it requires installing nightly builds. At first, I was a bit skeptical of installing a non-stable build, but when I tried it out, man was I amazed. My NC got a lot faster. I installed the CM7 Nightly Build 97. But then, I found out that I couldn't boot to the STOCK NC 1.2 ROM anymore.
HOW I DID IT:
I followed this instruction to install CWM:

NOTE: I picked the 16GB link under "Clockwork Recovery v3.0.2.8-Old Nook Colors(not blue dot)" category since I have a 16GB microSD card and the other category "Clockwork Recovery v3.2.0.1-For new blue dot Nook Colors and Old Nooks" does not have a link for 16GB, only 1GB.
Then I followed this guide to install CM7 Nightly Build 97:

NOTE: I ignored the instruction "Only install if when you boot your nook it DOES NOT SAY READ FOREVER" and proceeded to installing the updated U-Boot 1.2 simply because I overlooked it at that time (could this be causing the problem?)

NOTE: I ignored the fact that it says "Install 'update-CM7-dalingrin-OC-emmc-060911.zip'. " even though I was a bit skeptical. I did got skeptical a bit because I thought I should install instead the sd update instead of the emmc. But I proceeded anyway. (Could this be it?)
Can someone please identify what I've done wrong? Or can someone please give me a tutorial to fix it? Or at least point me to a tutorial that will fix the problem. I've been trying to find a way to fix it by myself by reading forums and blogs and stuff but I can't seem to find anything. I'm a noob, but I do know how to follow simple instructions. I'd really appreciate it if you can help me. :'(

You haven't done anything wrong, but you did get rid of your previous setup. You turned your SD card into a CWR bootable card, then installed CM7 to your internal memory. By doing this, you erased your stock 1.2 and replaced it with CM7. To get your SD card to stop booting to CWR, you can simply format the card. This will remove the boot files and it becomes a standard memory card once again. If you want your stock 1.2 back, there are threads here that explain how to revert back to stock. You might need that bootable SD card, however, so wait until you decide what you want to do before formatting the card.
Unless you have some reason to want your stock 1.2 back, I would suggest you just stick with what you have. It is what most of us are running.

Thanks for that. I was sure I didn't do anything wrong.
My reason for wanting to get access to my stock ROM is for me to 'Archive' my epubs. I have like a million of them, and I do read a lot. I cant find a good app to view epubs just like the stock B&N NC 1.2 reader... so if I archive those epubs, I'd be able to view them through the nook for android app. And yup, I've tried putting the epubs in the nook directory, it's still not reading it. That's basically it. If you guys can find a better way to view epubs like the stock B&N, I'm happy. Any ideas?
I'm hoping to try Phiremod as well in the near future, just so I can get a feel of which ROMs are the best. I've seen people running a ROM that still has the original 'Nook Color' status bar at the bottom and a dock bar on the side.

I think it's cool. If that build can run all apps in my CM7 nightly (I recently updated to Build 100), and also if that can be overclocked to at least 1.2GHz, I'll be so happy.

There are lots of free apps that can read epub files. I downloaded the free epub of 'Phantom of the Opera' from some random web site, then looked in the Market for an 'epub reader'. One called 'FB Reader' was one of the first results. Opened the book fine, had lots of user-changable options and settings. Lots of other such apps available. Did this all in about 3 minutes using only my Nook with CM7 installed to internal memory. Took me longer to type out this post.

[Q] Nook not booting using SD card CM7, goes into Nook mode

Hi,
Having a with a Nook where it will not complete boot of CM7 which is installed on an SD card. Instead it boots into the Nook Color software.
I hold down the power button till I see the green Cyanogenmod logo with the Loading text, which I think means it is booting from the SD card (I can get it to boot into CM recover), then the screen goes blank and something goes wrong and the boot process continous with the 'n' screen and eventually loads the Nook boot animation and ends with the Nook software loaded. The nook software seems to be running fine except I can't get the SD card to boot all the way.
I've tried 2 known good SD cards, which boot without problems on my second nook, so I know it is not the SD card. I suspect something got corrupted with the boot process files, so I have been trying to find a way to overwrite the existing files with a virgin copy.
1) Can't get ADB running, I suspect the ADB route is only possible if I have the nook booting in a rooted CM7 in the first place (if some one could confirm that would help)
2) I have tried the x8 boot fail reset as well as the erase and deregister option in the nook software with no change in the above behaviour.
3) My last hope is to do an update back to stock using the recovery mode of the SD card. I can copy an updater file to the small partition of the SD card that is visible on Windows. I found a 1.2 stock updater, but it is ~200MB which is too big to fit on the SD card. If someone could point me to a smaller updater or a sd image with CWM and >200MB space that would be very helpful. TY!

What exactly are you trying to do? If you are just trying to set up dual-boot of CM off of your SD card, you don't need to do anything to the stock B&N internal install. I've had good luck using the procedure in the [ROM][CM7] [v1.3] Size-agnostic SD Card image and CM7 installer for SD Cards thread.
Are you sure the initial CM install on your SD card went well? It's known to be very particular (see top of that thread) about what SD cards work. The first few times I tried, I didn't realize there were error when CM was initially extracted which led to similar failures. From what you've described, the SD setup is failing. Normally, you don't need to worry too much about what's on the internal emmc setup of the Nook Color.

Hi bobsto, some background. I've been using CM7 on a microSD for several weeks now. I dual boot between Nook SW and CM7 that way. I've been using the link you posted above to create the SD cards and so far I have not had to touch the eMMC files at all.
Then a friend messed around with the Nook I gave them with CM7 on an SD card. I don't what the friend did, but when I got the Nook back it would not boot into CM7. I pulled my SD card from my working Nook and it wouldn't work either. So I'm guessing someone screwed with the Nook internal files. So I am trying the factory restore of the Nook SW to see if that will fix the problem and allow me to load CM7 from the SD card again. Interestingly Nookie will boot from SD and CM7 won't. Still trying stuff to see what will fix the problem. Suggestions are welcome.

Gosh, I wish someone could figure this out.
I restored original stock after a full CM7 root and it went fine but I can NOT get a dual boot sd card to work.
It seems to install but when I reboot it shows CM7 screen briefly then always boots to Nook OS.
Tried many many different cards and image writers and CM7's and even a card from my other Nook which I know works.
It will not boot into the CM7 from the SDcard.
Any help?

I made a 32gb CM7 sdcard.
Still wish I could have got the size-agnostic card to work, it bugs me when I can't figure stuff out.

I'm in the same boat, but after 1 day of research and trial and error I'm happy it works. Maybe someone smarter will see this and know the answer and solve my problem curiousity.

[Q] Nook Color Rooting Issue.

New here, yes I did look around. Found lots of other good info, but not this. If I missed it, feel free to remove my man card. I just got a nook color for x-mas yay me. I have followed two guides:
Well I tried to post two links but that wont work. I understand. Anyway, one guide is called How to Install CyanogenMod 7 on the Nook Color (PC Version), found it on Youtube. Other is called How to: Root a Nook Color, install CyanogenMod 7, and overclock it off of icrontic.com Hope that helps.
I am using at 8gb version to write to SD card. I copy both files over without un-ziping them. Follow all directions. However nook will not boot into Cyanogen. I just get the normal nook boot up. I have tried several times. I am new to the whole rooting thing and have seen people post different versions of the same file. Not sure if that has anything to do with it.

Well I didn't know there were other options other than CM7. I have also been told that is one is the best all around one out there. You will have to excuse my ignorance but what is eMMC and uSD?

Don't worry, we all learn something day to day.
CM7 is a custom ROM (or OS if you want to call it), which replaced the stock OS by many of us. It is one of the most used ROM out there for NC (short cut for NOOKcolor)
In order to run/use CM7 on the NC, there are 2 choices:
1. Installing and running it (CM7) from the internal memory (a.k.a. eMMC) or
2. Booting and running it (CM7) from the external uSD card
You can spend the whole day searching for the difference in details, here, I just give you some quick thinking of the 2.
Running from eMMC = more complicate installation process, smooth performance, a lot less FC's (Force Close = applications hung), easy to backup, more storage. But you will void the B&N warranty since you delete their original stock OS.
Booting off uSD is a quick way to explore the beauty of CM7 or any custom ROM WITHOUT effecting the stock OS, meaning still under warranty. Down side is you need to have a 8GB or 16GB Sandisk class 4, which probably costs about $20 (onsale for 16GB).

Ok does it have to be a Scandisk sd card? I thought loading CM7 via SD card removed the warranty also. A side question I have. I saw on youtube someone was able to "dual boot" the nook OS with the CM7 OS. They could swap back and forth, any idea what this is about? Sorry I don't have much more information on it than that.

No, it does not have to be a Sandisk but Sandisk (class 4) is the best (have been tested) on the market. You can use any other brands, it might work and might not. Therefore, if you intend to run CM7 off uSD, Sandisk is strongly RECOMMENDED. If you use the uSD as an additional storage, any brand is OK.

No, it does not. Running off uSD has zero effect on stock OS.

A lot of people mistype or mis-use the term "dual-boot"
AFAIK, there is 2 kinds of "dual-boot" (one of them is incorrectedly used)
a. Leaving stock OS on eMMC and booting CM7 off uSD.
b. Installing 2 different ROMs on eMMC.
I personally choose to say b. should be called "dual-boot", not a. but a lot of people calling a. as "dual-boot". I don't mind.
What your question is for item a.
All you have to do is during powering up, press and hold the "N" button then select booting Normal, it will boot into whatever on the eMMC (i.e. stock OS) even having CM7 uSD plugged in.
If loading through SD card does not void warranty I would prefer that for the time being until I get the hang of this stuff more. Then again a fully rooted nook is basically a android tablet+nook. The only reason I would want the warranty is if something inside were to break.

What have you done?

Ok sorry it took me a little bit to get back to you guys. I work the night shift so it can be a pain and make you seem like a ghost.
So I downloaded a file called 8gb_clockwork-0.7. Used a program called Win32 Diskmanager to write that file to the SD card. I have an 8gb SD card. Not Scandisk.
I then copied over two file that are .zip files. I did not un-zip them. Files are gapps-gb-20110307-signed and update-cm-7.0.3-encore-signed.
I am using my phone as a micro SD card reader. Could that be causing issues?
Everything I read said to do what I just said/did. I then pop in the SD card into the nook. My nook then boots up normally, I.E. standard nook OS.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

I would like to run it off of the USB drive until I get familiar with it. Just in case I do not like it. As this is my first time rooting something I would like to keep my options open.

I assume you meant to run CM7 off uSD (you said USB drive???)
Anyway, if that's the case, what you have done was incorrect.
Forget about it, start over again.
With your not Sandisk uSD card, I wouldn't recommend but if you have to use it, then go with it for now.
1. download "win32diskimager" (I hope you already it)
2. download the "Size-agnostic SD" v1.3 imager from this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1000957
3. try this ROM (build 12122011) as many others like it from this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1344873
4. download this GApp (20110828) for CM7 from this link: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=Latest_Version
5. try to follow verygreen's instructions from the link that I posted in step 2.

[Q] What am I doing wrong?

Gr, I have at this for hours.
I wanted to get the ICS sneakpeek running up on my nook. I had CM7 running on it. Here's exactly what I did.
1. I had CM7 on the SD card, using verygreens image. I've been using it for months, no problem, but decided I wanted ICS on it. So I backed up my apps and copied important stuff to my laptop.
2. Plugged the SD card into my laptop, and ran win32diskimager. I was planning on picking "Read" instead of "write", but it wanted me to write it to an image file.. Stupidly, I wrote it to verygreen's "generic_sdcard" image file. It probably won't work to reflash, but who care, I can just start over.
3. I put the SD card into the nook, to see what happened. It booted up, the linux penguin showed, couldn't find install image (obviously), blah blah blah...
4. Popped the SD card into the computer, and dropped sneakpeek fullofbugs1 on there. Booted up, fine, got into ICS.
5. Shutdown, SD card back in the computer, dropped fullofbugs2 on there. "Not enough space on the SD card".
6. Started Easus partition manager, with the intentions of resizing the BOOT partition. However, this is where the problems started. It would not let me resize it. I tried everything, and I could not, for the life of me, get it to resize. Is there something special I have to do? resize before placing CM9 on there? before ever placing it in the nook? I'm worried I'll mess it up and just have a normal nook again.
I'm no noob, I wrote this awhile ago. I'm pretty experienced in android.
Can anyone suggest anything? I'm pretty sure I probably need to resize before running the card in the nook.
TL;DR How can I expand the boot partition of my verygreen SD card? Do I have to do it before first inserting it into the nook after the image is written?

I would also like to do as you have done. What size did you have to make the boot partition for ics to fit properly? This is new for me since I didn't have to resize at all for cm7. I've been using cm7 for a few months but would really like to try ics on another micro sd I got just for this. Do I follow verygreens instructions except for adding sneekpeak as the nightly?

Make the boot partition about 200mbs, if I remember correctly the image defaults it to 117mbs. It only needs a little more space.
Also, yes you can follow verygreens instructions to make a bootable ICS micro card. I made and ran ics this way for about a week before commiting to the emmc install with nightly build 14 which is still rocking as my daily driver!

I believe that in the ICS Nightly thread, there is a modified version of the image file with all that pre done for the SD card.

[Q] Unable to boot my ~unmodified~ Nook Color from SD card.

I just got a refurbished Nook Color. Seems to work fine but you have to push the power button hard to click it.
Haven't rooted, installed roms, anything yet. But I can't get it to boot from my SD card. I have a 4GB (class-4) microSD card. (I have checked the sdcard for bad blocks using the linux "badblocks" command.) I have followed instructions detailed here:

. I use Ubuntu Linux 10.11 "dd" command to write the .img files to the SD card. However, once I write the SD card and put it into my Nook, the nook won't turn on. Just won't turn on. As soon as I take the card out and try again, I can boot up the nook to the locked-down, walled-garden stock Android on the device.
Help! Is something wrong with my SD card, or with my device? I have a 2GB microSD card somewhere I can find if I need to...

What I might suggest is to discard your original source of instructions and start fresh. Search the xda forum for clear information on 1) proper mSD card to use; 2) proper card burning software; 3) the most appropriate rom(s) to use for what you want your Nook to do for you, and 4) if necessary, very explicit instructions to troubleshoot any problems you may encounter with your processes. I'll not point to specific locations here, because I'm not sure what you actually want to do, But the search engine is very thorough and the threads are numerous.
Good luck. I'm sure you'll be quite content with your newly rooted/rommed NC.

I have a section in my tips thread linked in my signature that deals with bootable SDs, but I'm not sure it's going to help you. I was helping another user that had the same exact problem where the Nook would not power on with the SD in. One of the things I had him do was fully charge his Nook. I can't remember how he resolved it though, if he did. But I suspect a faulty Nook or SD. Pins bent or something.

Thanks. It's worth noting that, if I get an SD with normal data (photos, etc) on it and put it in while the nook is booted normall, the nook can read the card and see what's on there. So the nook can read cards. That doesn't mean the boot-up bits aren't screwy.... this is refurbished.

Update: I got it to work. However, it's quite laggy, possibly because it's Honeycomb on a class 2 (low IO speed) card. Can anyone point me to a super-slimed android (don't care what version) .img file I can put on my card?

Oh, do not use Honeycomb. It is terrible. Use CM 7.2. They just this weekend came out with a stable version. Cyanogenmod.com. Look for encore stable. And your class 2 should work great.

Let me +1 the latest and greatest CM 7.2. I was using a supposedly faster card with 7.1 on an NC and I also experienced a lot of lagging.
Switching to a class 4 SanDisk card and going to 7.2 fixed the problem. Since I did both at the same time, I can't tell you what exactly made the difference but if installing 7.2 does not fix the issue, try changing your card.
I followed these instructions which installs CM7 on your SD card so you can dual boot if necessary. Also, this has the same exact info written in a slightly less techie language. (I am not sure why he is trying to use the hardware keys to reboot into the recovery mode when it can be done easily from within CM7.)

I know this is a super old thread, but it seems like an appropriate place to post. I've got three Nook Color tablets from my niece and nephews. I flashed them with Mirage Cyanogenmod 7.2 via CWM on an SD card. Once I got the SD setup, I went through two of them in 10 minutes total. No sweat. I installed two fresh, out-of-the-box SD cards in each tablet, which left the modded, CWM SD card untouched after flashing the first two. The third one was missing for several weeks. They just found that one. They dropped off the third tablet along with the modded SD card, which was sealed in a ziplock bag, to me. I installed the card into the third Nook Color, which was untouched after flashing the first two, and the third Nook Color booted right past the SD card and into the stock OS. I've reflashed the same .img file and others, including verygreen's onto this SD card. It simply refuses to boot from the SD. I've tried writing the .img file from WinImage, and WinImage32 through the SD slot on my laptop, an SD card adapter via USB, and through the nook itself as a mass storage drive. I'm stumped. Any thoughts?
On a side note, I don't have access to the first two to confirm the SD card is still on track, nor do I, at this point, have a spare SD card to troubleshoot with. Those are my next steps to take, but I am curious what the experts might have to suggest in the mean time. Thanks in advance, and I'll post my solution, if I solve this.

Are you sure the third one is a Nook Color? It could be a Nook Tablet. They look the same, but the Tablet has a silver bezel instead of black. Those cards will not boot on a Tablet.

My first thought was "that's a ridiculous question. Of course it's a Color!", but then I peeled the cover off, and the bezel is indeed silver. Looks like I have some more reading to do. Thanks for saving me a TON of grief and frustration.

Just to follow up, I followed the instructions for flashing Cyanogenmon on the Nook TABLET, thank you Leapinlar, and everything is good. Thanks again.
