Now you can use a external microphone with the Kindle Fire!
12/17/2011
EDIT: This does NOT work with any calling apps(Google Voice, Skype, etc.) or text-to-speech apps. This will only work with a FEW audio recording apps.
For this to work you need:
A headset with a headphone/microphone combo
OR
A microphone with a 4-conductor plug (jack with three dividers)
These headphone/mic combos have a 4-conductor plug (a TRRS), to accommodate two stereo channels for the headphones plus the mic (audio left, audio right, mic, and neutral). A normal stereo headset has a 3-conductor plug called a TRS (left, right, and neutral).
This is what the jack should look like:
IT HAS 3 DIVIDERS

Can you help a noob?
i have been able to root my kindle fire and get most of the apps working. However, i cannot seem to get this sound recorder working.
What app are you using? I tried to install sound recorder, but it didnt install (even as root). I was able to sideload voice recorder, but every time i tried to open it, it forced closed.
i am root and tried to use root explorer to move the app from the sd card to /system/app but when i long pressed on the apk, there wasn't a "move" option. can you please help me?
Do you have a headset plugged in? If not it probably does not detect any microphone and that's why it's force closing. And if it's still force closing after you plugged your headset in then that means the app is in-compatible with the Kindle Fire.

Thanks muchly. Off to target to buy now. how do you make phone calls on the kindle fire by google voice? i'm trying grooveip, but i would prefer google voice for calls.
These are the ones I bought:

They are only $6 have great reviews.
They will work right?

They won't work. You need headphone/microphone combo because the Kindle Fire has 3.5mm headphone jack, so it won't work with just a microphone.

Like I said before, you need to plug in a headphone/microphone combo into the Kindle Fire because it has 3.5mm headphone jack. If you plug in just a microphone it will not work.
I tried it with my gaming headset (plugged in just the microphone, the pink cable) and when I plug it in I don't get any sound and the microphone does not work.

These will work. You need a 4-conductor (TRRS) plug. When I got the recorder to work, I installed the app with the heaphone/mic unit plugged in. Itworked fine.
I didn't have luck with 2 speech-to-text apps, Clinton and Speech to Text.

Do I have to buy that separately or something? Isn't it already a 4-conductor plug?

It is a 4 conductor plug, but the headset peice is disabled (as far as I iknow). If the mic section interfaces with the correct connection, it should work theorectically.
I see. So it's a 4 conductor plug but without headphones. Yea it should work then. Someone buy it and try it out
Yeah, it'll work. It's made specifically for this application - it's got the TRRS plug on it. Pretty cool; nice find. I just ordered one.
Just found this.
You can use this if you already have a gaming headset but the headphone/microphone jacks are seperate (green and pink)

OEM product from HTC
4 in 1 adapter with a Power Status light contains the following ports
1. HTC ExtUSB standard headset connector
2. Mini USB power connector
3. 3.5mm audio connector (with in-line mic support)
4. 2.5mm audio connector (with in-line mic support)
Anyone use one of these?
Work well?
Does it have the problems that the other adapters usually have?
High-End.
I would like to know how well this works (if it works at all).
Could come in handy if I needed to record some quick audio!
Bought one last night
I'll report back when I get it.
what problem do other adapters have???
if you mean the difference between a stereo plug an a stereo/mic plug...
then you should not blame products malfuction on your lack of knowledge

Nice.
My goal is to record some audio somehow on to the unit.
I am a DJ and sometimes would like some "basic" mono recording directly from my mixer.
If this is doable with this phone and adapter I'd be so happy LOL

This adapter has a pinout problem which causes problems with audio out.
Asshole.
I have the 4-in-1 adapter. Works good. No problems. Syncs, charge all at the same time.
You willl be surprised with the size of this thing. Initially looking at pics I thought it's fairly large and big but it's really small.
Not to mention that you can also use the 3.5mm jack for TVout, but the titan doesn't support that.
Is there any way to just RECORD AUDIO from a source in to this unit?
I have always wanted to figure it out. With all the recording software for these phones, I got to be able to find SOMETHING that will allow me to record from an audio source.
Help?

while you can use a degrading word really well
is it also possible the solution is simple?
i'm not saying its the problem
because i dont buy these things
but have a look at a pair of "older than dirt" industry standards
its called stereo & stereo w/ mic
hmm...maybe i'm wrong...but i doubt it
I have both the adapter you're asking about and one like the other pictured in this thread. I had to perform the same *fix* with both of them of bending the top right pin (if you have the notched side also on the top right) down in order to get them to work. Once I did that, it works great. I can charge and listen to music on my headphones. I have not used it with any kind of headset that has a mic in it for phone calls or with the connection for the mini-usb style headset. The 3.5mm jack works and the usb/charger port works for sure on mine though.
anybody have the one in the first post with a Ryan Mogul ROM?
I had a stock ROM and my USBmini thing to 3.5" worked great.
Moved to a DCD ROM and I had to do the pin out thing to get it too work.
Now with Ryan's ROM's it doesn't switch to audio out, just stays with the internal speaker. Any idea?
maybe this one will work for me?
Yea, I'm using Ryan Moguls verizon 2.2 heavy I believe. I had to change the pin when I had the MR1 update, but both adapters still work now. If I plug the 4-in-1 into my phone the internal speaker keeps playing, but once I plug my headphones into the adapter, the sound switches to my headphones. Can't speak for everyone else's, but it works on mine.
Is there ANY WAY that I could use the MIC on the 6800 as a LINE-IN for AUDIO???
Mono recording is fine, I don't need Stereo at all.
I hope it is possible.
Got my adapter in yesterday, did the pin mod and I'm loving it.
It will be nice to listen to Pandora while I'm driving a Uhaul for 400miles

I agree with the last word. I bought this same adapter thinking it would work because it was advertised it would work.
i have this OEM product from HTC 4 in 1 adapter . it works ok except it doesn't support out-line mic ....when talking on the phone, you could hear them they can't hear you.
With my Touch Pro2, I was able to plug my phone into the aux port in my car via stereo cable, and I could still use the microphone. It seems that when I plug the Epic in, I get the sound... but the Microphone disables itself? Does anyone know of a way to fix this? I have looked at most settings but can't find anything.
I posted a similar issue about 20 threads down in this forum. My car has an aux and bluetooth for the phone. When aux is in use, the phone decides to disable the built in mic AND it doesn't route the calls over the bluetooth. 2 HUGE oversights in this phones design. Should be a simple software fix, but I'm not a good programmer.
I use my car's bluetooth hands-free which includes audio support (no AUX use required, though music seems to sound better wired). My only issue with this setup is that I cannot use speech recognition; that is to say, the microphonr doesn't wrk when the phone is pairred. I'll keep my eyes on this thread in case someone knows a fix.
Thanks!
Just an FYI, the Samsung Moment does this also. I believe it has something to do with the ability of using wired headsets with mics, so the built-in mic is disabled whenever something is plugged in, even if whatever you plugged in doesn't have a mic.
The Samsung Moment has this same issue, dangit. I was hoping this wouldn't. Is there a fix?
It is a matter of making a small app for the epic only, that over-rides the physical switch. Even better would be an app that detected when headsets were plugged in and it gave you options.
Where is the microphone located? Bluetooth, phone, headset
What would you like to use to listen to phone calls: Bluetooth, phone, headset
So, I was reading on another forum that this "issue" was not an issue on the Moment cj05 update. But turned into an issue on the cj14 update. Hey dev's that may be reading this. What is the possibility of finding the file in the cj05 update and overwriting it onto said file on the epic?
I have this issue as well.
It's definitely an issue with the Epic. When in my car, I'd have my EVO plugged into my Aux jack and could still talk. Not with my Epic. Boo hiss.
Hope it gets fixed... as this is a pretty big feature for me to lose.
I have not discovered a software fix, but this should be a hardware work around. Hands Free 3.5mm Adapter + Microphone, with 3.5mm pass through.

have you tested this? does it work?
So I found something out.
As described before, when the phone is plugged into an AUX port in a car using a 3.5mm cable the microphone is disabled when you get a call.
However I found out that it is not disabled at all times. Even while the phone is connected to the AUX port. I tested using google voice search while playing music via AUX. I also tested using EverNote to record a note with an active call in the back ground.
Point is the microphone is NOT disabled, the phone app simply ignores it. Perhaps using a different phone app other than the one included would resolve this issue. At least its a software issue and not a hardware problem.

No I have not tested it. However I know the included headset with a microphone built into the cable work. Seems logical that it would work.

Actually, what you described sounds like a software issue. Considering the moment does the same thing after the c14 update and not before also points to a software issue.

Please read my posts above. It is a software issue. The microphone will still work...in other applications. It is only the phone app/dialer that mutes it.
I cannot fathom how Samsung would allow this, they include a Headset/Microphone combo with the phone, that does not work for making calls. That is like including a spoon with a hole in it with a bowl of soup.
Again it's definitely a software problem. Best way to get it fixed it to flood tech support with the problem till they are aware of it and issue a fix.
I read somewhere that if you use sasmung branded ones it works..but I have not confirmed it...

Not too comfortable to use for a long duration & as it doesn't have noise cancellation, very hard to get the voice dialer to work correctly on the road.
using a sony dr-bt50 and a jabra bt3030 both works well
I'm just using the headphones that came with it at the moment, got a couple of bluetooth headsets, o2 and jabra, cant remember what models, they are both hideously ugly though!

Jabra BT8020
It has a oled display with adjustable brightness) that show the caller
Phone contact storage facility, so I can have contacts in there and call them without ever take my tab from the pocket
Vibrate
sound: incoming calls good, outgoing calls usually good, but I used Sony and other jabra models and they don't see to be any better
It can be used mono or stereo by plug into it the other earpiece that come with it, and it has a very good sound
the music player can be controlled from the headset (Play, pause/stop and next song only, the display won't show music info).
Connection and disconnection so far not problems and the distance around 10m (just as it says in the tin)
Is a few years old but the battery time is still decent, sadly I don't know any newer device that does all that in such a small package and I bet if someone with the "knowhow" could hack it to use the display for much more.
So for now this thing do what I need, I may replace it in the future either with something more advanced (if I can find it)
or
with a combo of BT headset/Viewpad if eventually it is made to work properly or
with a BT headset/Sony Ericsson BT watch, I used that in the past old WM times and my thanks goes to moneytoo for his fantastic app if someone here does not know him yet, do a search, it is worthy, specially with a device like the Tab
Do I still make sense or I need to drink more beer?
I use Motorola S305 headphones/headset.
I'm using Sony Ericsson MW600, it binds with my Galaxy Tab, Nexus One sometimes even my imac all at the same time and it even has built in radio and it's a stereo bluetooth, it supports 2 or 3 devices at once
So need to carry mutliple headsets
Cheers
I have been using the Jawbone Icon and I find it is really good, especially after you customize it with their website. You can enable A2DP for podcasts and other media and even select custom voices for when the phone rings! I have had a few Jawbone headsets and others but always went back to the Jawbone!

I'd like to buy new headset for my IDEOS. Should I look for any specific features/keywords in headset description or any set with mic will be good replacement for original one?
If you're interested in Bluetooth (a2dp) headset, look no further than Sony MW600. I'm using it for a few months and the sound is superb. Make sure you upgrade to a custom rom with android 2.3.5, as froyo has some bitrate issues over a2dp.
On the back of this suggestion I went ahead and bought the Sony MW600. Found a resonable price on E-bay.
Currently testing it out and must say I am impressed so far.
I'm still on the Stock froyo and not having any bit rate issues.
The only issue I am having is that the headset controls work better with the stock music player and cause all sorts of problems with audio player apps like PowerAmp.
A shame, as I do like PowerAmp but still in the trial period. Will have to try other audio players. I do like a bit of EQ control.
I can verify that the Sony MW600 works really well and the interesting thing while testing was that I could walk about 12 meters away (still line of sight) and pick up the sound just as clear.
I have some MP3 at the around 200kbs and some at the lower approx 130kbs and you do notice a difference in quality. Will track down some higher bit rate MP3's to test when I get a chance.
I believe you can disable headset controls in Poweramp so there is no need to change players.
The wired headsets that came with the phone dont work on my laptop well but are cool with the handset.
I tried optimus one wired headsets which works perfectly on my laptop but failed on this set.
What might be the problem?

but i think the music headsets like skullcandy , philips etc work on all the 3.5 mm jacks but remember they dont have mic .
i guess it might clear ur doubt . lemme know when u try some bec i am also planning to buy some descent bass headphones .
Beats by dre doesn't work on this phone :/ and the headphones which came with the phone only works on my PCs when they're 2/3 inside the jack..
Yeah the supplied set works on PC while just 2/3 inserted.

Just look for anything that is compatible with the 2011 range of Sony Ericsson mobiles and it should be okay

Philips she6000 work great on my ideos x5
In the ebay you found very headsets compatible with android's. but....
People here are talking about headsets (with microphones), not headphones!
All headphones should work, there's nothing special about their TRS jack.
The problem is the 4 connections on the headsets TRRS jack. Like some people said, it may vary.

Anyone bought a good cabled headset that had good sound quality and had a mic+button to pick calls/skip track?
I'm interested too...
i've read somewhere that all the sony headsets should work.
i will look for the source.
Search for Jabra Chill or other headsets from the same brand. They have mic and button to receive/end call. The pin is 4-pole 3,5mm.
I've found this app on google play store: Headset Button Controller
It emulates multi button headsets, with right button sequence you can change tracks, adjust volume, answer phone calls, start Voice Command... And works on U8800
Bought the Sony MW600 headset some months ago. Excellent choice + biut-in fm radio
Tried a friend's Sony Ericsson MH-610 yesterday and it worked!
Amazon is selling it at £5/€6/$8!!
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Genuine-Sony-Ericsson-MH-610-Handsfree/dp/B004V2K8EG
Does anybody knows the pinout??
Did anyone tryusing an external microphone with A500? I tried plugging in a 4 pole and 3 pole microphones into the headphone input but they did not work.
I also tried a usb sound card with microphone on it but even though kernel identifies it properly, mic. does not work from it.
This mic. problem is the only thing that annoys me about my tablet, so I am desperately trying to find a solution.
Have you tried a pair of headphones with built in mic?

I'm using a headset/microphone that was made for a PSP and it works fine:

thanks a lot, are you sure that the microphone on the psp headset is being used and not the internal mic. of A500?

Absolutely. It's easy to test. Just cover the tiny hole over the embedded mic and the other person can hear me just fine. Cover the headset's mic and no sound!
I bought an iPad/iPod/iPhone one for my wife and it works on her iPad but it won't work on my A500. The one for the PSP, however, works fine!
Of course, I wouldn't stake my life on it mind you! I know it works on mine.

I can confirm that qhorque is correct. I use the exact same set of headphones and the microphone definitely works. If I could find a set of these that were bluetooth instead of wired they would be perfect.
They dont have to be PSP headphones, any headphones w/ a mic should work. I have a couple different ones that I use.
On my iconia a500, bought recently in France, none of these external microphones work. There is no little hole on the front cover. I took off the back cover of the tablet but, even so, you must speak very close to the microphone for a more or less correct result.
It's clearly a big failure on this model but, as far as I can read hundreds of complaints on internet, many of us are facing the same problem with the a500.
I'm facing the same problem. None of Mic+earphones I've try works. I have tested Nokia, SE and some China-brand. Only thing I get is some echo in headphones (like DD effects hehe) but no Mic response.

That's the problem, they SHOULD work but not all of them do.
As I noted above, the iP* ones I bought for my wife did not work in the A500 and they have the 3-connection plug, a microphone, and ear buds. Something in them make them iP* specific and unable to properly function on the A500 I guess.
So, you do have to be careful. Unfortunately most of the time you have to buy them to try them!
The Ipad/iphone ones will not work, the mini plug is not poled the same as our plug. Apple does this on purpose to force you to buy their banded or licensed products. You need to look for a headset/mic combo that is made for a windows or generic product. Also, has anyone had any luck using a bluetooth headset with the iconia.
This might not be the answer for everyone, but I use a product called Headset Buddy (Look on Amazon) that allows you to use any headset that has the two (mic/speakers) plugs commonly used in PCs. It works pretty well, and it doesn't limit you to only that headset, and when the headset breaks/wears out, you just replace it instead of having to get a specialized product.

I have tried three different bluetooth headsets, two different motorola models and a sony, and all three of them registers as a audio device only, so the mic.s on them does not work.

Thanks for the info, this is probably why my two mini microphones does not work as it says it works on iphones on both of them. This is one of the main reasons I absolutely despise apple.

I do not have any holes whatsoever on the front cover either. I guess some of them are just sold with this manufacturing problem.
Unfortunately, hole or not hole doesn't make any difference, on my iconia a500.
It's very easy for anyone to check it.
Just take off the back cover of your tablet -amazingly, it's not very difficult to be done just with nails, starting from the sdcard's compartment - and try to record your voice with the microphone uncovered...
Even doing like this, the sound's level after record is very, very low. The record becomes audible (but still not perfectly clear) only when you speak at a very short distance of the mini microphone (at more or less 1 inch !).
There are two mini micophones actually, located next to each other. I wonder why.
I tried to switch them (easy to do as well) but it doesn't make any difference.

No, I ended up returning the mic.
