A new kind of screen issue - Eee Pad Transformer General

My Transformer has always had light bleed on the sides of the IPS panel - it got worse after receiving it back from repairs.
After the last firmware update, the tablet rebooted and the screen automatically goes on high-brightness. During that state, I noticed several "streaks" on the screen, looking like blobs of oil or something and I'm wondering what the heck it is. My tablet is on the dock 99% of the time and there's no way it would have been physically damaged by anything.
Since I keep my brightness very low for normal use, I wouldn't have noticed it, but now I see it on black backgrounds - it's an obvious screen issue, but I've never seen or heard of this problem before.
Has anyone else experienced this with other IPS screen devices? I can post a picture of my explination is too hard to follow. This will be second time returning the transformer and I'll be complaining about having to pay AGAIN for shipping back their poor quality product - the dock has to be returned as well for deep sleep issues.

Moisture got in is my guess. The case on my tf is loose and doesn't seal properly. I have the same issue you described don't know when it happened as I never exposed my device to liquids however I have used it in high humidity and am guessing that's how it got in there.

Hi! I also have noticed these "bloobs of oil" on my transformers screen and been wondering what are those and how te fix that since i got my TF almost 2 months ago. It does not affect touchscreen responsiveness or anything else, but I would be happy to know if it may turn out to be an issue. Has anyone got actual problems with this or there is nothing to be worried about?
Haven't taken any pictures yet because I don't thing these "stains" could be seen in pic.
P.S. English is a foreign language for me, i'm sorry for any mistakes.

The problem is not physical, but something wrong with the screen. Increasing the brightness makes it much worse (much like light bleed).
They are blobs of light spots... about 1/4" in diameter.

I got them too. I just noticed this immediately after accidentally sitting on my transformer when it was resting on the sofa... :-(
In my particular situation, I'm pretty sure my 160lb a** was the culprit unfortunately...

I got the weird white spot on screen when I apply screen protechtor. Dunno what going on:-\

i got one in the center of the screen.. however I am the only person that knows its there lol.. it's only noticeable when the brightness is turned up all the way OR if the screen is on and is black, which doesn't really happen all that often.
In my case my stupidity is to blame. I live in the desert and I left my TF in the car during the summer while I was out hiking.. needless to say it was like 135 degrees in the car and now she has a scar to prove it.

Well, that's the thing - my device is in a nice, climate controlled room and has never been hit or left in extreme heat or anything else.
If I decide to sell this device in the future, I don't want this to be an issue, but then again, it really is only noticable with brightness on high with a black background.
Interestingly enough, I tested the screen with an app that displays all kinds of colors and I can only see these spots on BLACK. I would have expected it to show on red or blue, but I guess the way IPS panels show color prevents these defects from happening on all colours, like a dead pixel would.

I also have the same described problem, only seen on a black background,I get sad every time I see it because I know its probably not worth it to try and get it fixed.mine appeared randomly and I've kept in the dock always, just a crappy screen I guess because I treat my transformer like a newborn baby

I've come to the conclusion that Asus products are just poorly made with cheap components. I've owned many tablets and this is the only one that's given me one problem after another. And to top it off , I would have to pay for shipping to send it in for repair... it's like a slap in the face.

Other the this screen issue which I know I caused because I know it wasn't there til immediately after I sat on my tablet, I haven't had any other problems at all. In fact I honestly believe the exact opposite of you.. the transformer seems better made and uses a nicer screen than almost every other tablet in its price range. Seems like some people simply expect too much all the time.

I only expect the tablet to work and be defect free. In fact, I expect any product I pay for to be defective free.
I've experienced dead speakers, overheating issues, battery drain issues, dock issues, light bleed problems, random reboots, Sleep of death and now this new screen issue. Sending this back to ASUS costs me over $20 in shipping so a $399 tablet becomes a $499 tablet with all the repairs... Doesn't seem right from a consumers point of view.
By comparison, I've owned two iPads, hp touchpad, acer a500, Archos 70 and a cheap Coby tablet - none have had hardware issues except the Touchpad, which suffers from cracking near the speaker. Considering the touchpad was $150 and shipping to HP is free, this is a non-issue for me.
Maybe I have a bad apple, but from the look of these forums, quality issues have plagued the transformer from day one.

I have a rather early Transformer (got it in May) and did have light bleed issues from day one, but they are negligible. The screen however is noticeably nicer to look at than many others (iconia, thrive, etc) and the viewing angles are amazing, and it has 10 point multi-touch capability.
It is possible that you've just gotten a bad one.. I can't say for certain cause I am not running stock Asus firmware or kernel and I don't have any idea which firmware you are using.. But all of the things you've mentioned besides the screen issues could be related to firmware, software issues or apps

Stock firmware, no third party apps and the problems still persist. Asus said they fixed my light bleed issue, but in fact, they made it worse. Either way, issues with the sleep of death are VERY COMMON with Android devices, so I can't really blame Asus on that, but the fact remains that this tablet is very low quality vs. Others I've owned.

Epic Display Freak Out - Any Others Experience This?

I had only owned my Epic a week and this is what happened to the screen! I thought I was seeing things at first, then it got BAD. My wife captured this short video with her Evo before I took it in and traded it for a new unit.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I'm almost 2 weeks into my replacement unit and everything's fine so far.
That screen seems faulty to me.
Edit:
Or maybe even a loose wire?

Looks like a connector to the screen may have been loose :/..
I had it happen. Took it back and exchanged it even though after rebooting it appeared fine. I believe it was an overheating graphics processor (I've had similar happen on a computer).
At first, the guy at Best Buy was hesitant to replace it. I told him I didn't mind if he did a hard reset on it so he could rule out a software conflict (personally, I was confident it was hardware-related). Less than 3 minutes after being reset it was doing it again.
Now, I'll probably root it have some real fun!

I am having that issue right now! Anytime I even slide the keyboard out a little bit, my colors go all sorry and my wallpaper looks like old PC's with 256 colors! Lol or safe mode! I am 5 months into this phone, but hopefully it's still covered under some kind of warranty so I don't have to turn it on an insurance claim. Lol.

Wow! Seems to be a manufacturing defect in the latest round of shipments... Hope getting it swapped with a replacement was simple. Too much money to lay out to start with a defective unit like that, but as with anything, sh*t happens...just not cool when it happens to you!
With the amount of phones sold there are going to occasionally be defective ones.

I've had a similar issue, except much more subtle. Best way I can describe it: There will be random changing horizontal color bars that overlay on top of what is on the screen at about 90% transparency. It looks like something is interfering with the video output to the AMOLED. This only happens when the phone appears to be processing something like the loading screen for the Android Market or during the melody test in the *#0*# menu. It also appears to be related somehow to the battery charge level. The lower the charge, the more the effect. I'm just noting this issue here, and kind of wondering if anyone else has this issue. It doesn't really bother me at all, to be honest.

I think I was having the same problem.
It only seemed to happen when the battery was nearly depleted, and even then only when the screen was on high brightness and displaying nearly all white.
Seems to me like at low charge levels the battery can't supply enough power to keep most of the pixels white at high brightness, so it starts getting distorted.
Go to sprint service and repair store and open a ticket. They will either charge you $35 or it will be free if you're under tep, so long that you have no liquid on the device and it's not rooted. I'm a tech at one of the stores.

So how bad is the dust under screen issue? (Poll)

Im getting a new tablet soon and I think the 10.1 is my favorite of the moment. But getting dust under the screen is one of those things that would drive me nuts. So just curious how wide spread the issue really is.
You should search the forum for build issues, but I went through 3 tab10.1 and they all had dust under the screen.
I'm really sensitive to flaws and I can see it ONLY with the screen off and in really really bright rooms or in sun light. also, so far I haven't noticed any new dust that is getting in under the glass. So, I ended up with one that had just a few dust on the edge of the screen and I don't notice it under normal use.
No dust issues here or atleast haven't noticed under normal use. Absolutely loving my tab
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA Premium App
Like joebob1, the dust under the screen is clearly visible only when using the tab outside, under the sun ligth, and with a black background or the display off/in standby.
I bet that when the dust is checked under these conditions more people will report this problem.
so seems those mocking transformer for its build hre have dust and oil blob issues. Seems every tab is far from perfect....

Thanks guys, this is exactly why I wanted to have the poll. You get a few noisy people with bad luck and suddenly the 10.1 is junk because of a dusty screen. The poll is showing pretty much what I expected, the majority of them are fine.
To be honest im starting to lean pretty heavily towards the flyer for other reasons, but when it comes time to pick something in a couple days its good to know the tab is an option.

Oh ASUS...

So my first transformer was awesome except for the touchscreen that was unresponsive on a whole line across the tablet, the minimal light bleed, and the unbalanced speakers. I decided to rma it with ASUS and sent it back.
I just got it back today. The shipping paper shows a new part for a screen (I'm guessing.. 90R-OK061L20000Y). I immediately installed a multi touch and paint app to check the screen only to find an almost identical unresponsive section of the screen (on both it was unresponsive to the lightest of touch only. Heavy touches still registered.)
My question to my fellow Transformer owners is should I RMA again? Maybe switch to the galaxy tab? Hope its software related and wait for a fix? Our just ignore it?
Anyone else have this problem?
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
The Transformer is nice especially with dock if all works well, mine does, but if that were me I'd be unloading it and getting a Galaxy 10.1.
I just tested mine with the same paint program. I colored the whole screen with 1 finger and everything seems to be in order. Funny how that program registers 7 finger multitouch but 8 will cause a FC.
Anyway. I would RMA it again. This time stating that the problem wasn't fixed. Maybe put a bunch of post-it notes with arrows all pointing to the spot there it is whacked.

If this really is an issue only with "lightest of touch" I think you would be better off selling the unit. Touch screens often have areas that require more or less contact. The fact that they replaced the screen or digitizer and it does not meet your expectations suggests the settings they are using will not meet your expectations as to the amount of contact required.
Just a quick question, wherever you guys bought your transformer, did anyone buy a warranty through the retailer? Personally I work a BestBuy, so a 1 year with damage warranty was dirt cheap for me, so i bought it, normally I dont get the plans bc I treat my gadgets like angels, but with a 10 inch screen thats only protected by glass I thought I should, especially with all the defects from ASUS going around (although mines working perfect!).
Well as an example when trying to launch an app along the line a hard press is required

Could it be a problem with your fingers? Seems strange you have had problems with 2 lol
Are you saying my fingers is brokeded!?!
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App

well I would insist on a replacement if the issue is still there. You would of thought they would of tested this before it was returned to you.
I would of thought it would be other hardware other than the screen that is defective and they have simply replaced the incorrect part.
I called asus again and they game another rma. They paid for doing too, that's nice. hoping for a fix though.

Is nexus 7 quality that bad?

I've ordered one and I'm looking around here and.. what happens with this tablet? 90% of them have an important screen / battery / software problem?
I am REALLY scared of what I am receiving after reading this section...
Don't be, the number of people on XDA are but a small percentage of those that purchase the tablet.
I bought mine very early on, my friend bought his just recently from a completely different retailer and he has no issues.
If you read enough and look hard enough, you may convince yourself something is wrong with your tablet when there may not be.
So get your device, enjoy using it, and is there something really wrong with it if when using it, everything is working as it should?
nope, i LOVE my N7! i use it almost everyday...more so than my acer iconia 10". the N7 is fast, light, and screen is awesome. the ONLY thing i dont like is the non-standard charging "mechanism" that it uses. i hate not being able to just grab a normal micro usb cord and charger and just charging it. other than that...no complaints.
Quality is great.
Go for it!
I've had mine since day one and no problems at all. Not only that, but I've installed it in the dash of my car and it's held up great.
No its no bad. There are defective devices out there. But the quality is not bad f you get a working one. That sorta contradicts its self but you know what i mean.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
When you have 1% of devices that could potentially be lemons... coupled with the fact a substantial amount of that 1% are XDA members... it's easy for a device to look bad when in the grand scheme of things, it's not. Don't get me wrong, I'm not exactly a non-frustrated user. My screen magically cracked today somewhere between me holding it at the kitchen counter vs walking to my car, yet I never dropped it. That doesn't deter me away from buying another one since after all, mine was from the first gen batch, which if an issue is going to exist... it'll be there.
if you picky about minor issue, i think you should wait till at least October to be sure the problem is fixed. My has a minor screen lifted and there is a little static noise when turn the screen on/off. Other than that, it a good tablet. Yeah go for it.
Screen lift is ridiculously common, but that's the only really popular issue. Fortunately, there are flush screens out there, and it's not guaranteed to be a serious problem down the road even if you do get one that's a little loose on the left side.
Although there are fewer reports of lift in C8 units, the underlying cause has not been addressed. There was a big thread about this earlier today.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1856203
I had three units with screen lift and was unwilling to tolerate it, so now I'm waiting to repurchase until they get this cleared up. If you read through the first two pages of that thread you'll find that I asked the first person who claimed to have a flush C8 unit for photo verification, and that photo revealed screen lift. That was disappointing. I was hoping these newer ones with updated packaging were mostly fixed.
Most people who claim to have flush screens haven't actually checked, but that says something about how minor it usually is. Since you ordered from the Play store, you won't have to deal with ASUS if the worst case scenario happens (a cracked screen), and a hair of separation shouldn't prevent you from enjoying an otherwise great device, so long as you're confident in the warranty.
It really is a great tablet. I wish I'd kept my second unit from the Play store, the one with the least separation, because I really enjoyed having it.

Well, keep in mind that when people who are not XDA regulars have a problem they hit up Google and XDA links are generally on the top of the list for ANY Android device, so they come here to ask and/or complain about it. Then you have XDA regulars who tend to be techie types who are VERY picky about having perfection in their toys. So things the average Joe wouldn't even know is a problem can come across like its the end of the world. Finally, as many point out, you only see the problems because people don't generally come here to post "everything's fine" unless they are being snarky (like a thread I posted a while back) or just that rare person who does that sort of thing...usually as a counter balance to all the negative posts.

It's like if you visit a new country and the first thing you do is walk into a hospital... "what's wrong with this country? Everyone here is sick."
This forum is where the few people who have problems gather to discuss them, and they are a very small percentage of Nexus 7 owners. It's just that people for whom the device is working fine don't post every day and talk about their experience, while people having problems do.
Okay, thank you everyone for your replies!
It's a shame but I think what you say is true: even if this is a hi-grade tecnology forum, only the people with problems talk and talk about them, while the people without problems only reply them maybe some times and never talks about that anymore.
Anyway, I kinda hate when you guys say "Mine is ok! only the left side is a bit loose", "Its great! only the screen fails after 2h of use", "Its amazing, yet the screen cracks everytime time I touch it on this sire.."
250~$ is not enough to expect a FULL QUALITY DEVICE? I owned an iPad and a Galaxy Tab and I had never had to expect or to suffer a minor problem, and you're talking about really important screen problems (a curved / loosing side / cracking side / etc. screen has A LOT of more % of cracking, or getting dead pixels, or having another problems).
I honestly don't understand that mentallity. We are not talking about a 5$ device (and even there we could have a discussion), ¡¡its more than 250 dollars!!
I think that if this problems happen is because people accepts it like that.

Nexus 7 3G Defects - here!

Hello people!
As we all know the nexus 7 32gb 3G has shipped!, This is for everyone who has the Nexus 7 -3G- version only!
Do you have an issue with anything of your nexus 7 components (screen issues - build issues - speaker, etc ...) that are found on the previous builds of the nexus 7 non 3G ?
Did you guys find something that you like or you feel is better than the one with the previous build or non 3G (if you own a non 3G nexus)
like say, Faster, snppier, better graphics, performance etc ..
Sorry for my not so bad English
Just had 2 3Gs arrive to replace my old 16Gb wifis
Both perfect in every way, (Saying that so were my wifis)
Only comment is (Are google trying to get apple to sue them over the sim removal tool!!!)

Oh the reason Google are stating that Cases for the wifi nexus 7 are not compatible with the 3G version is that the Mic has moved due to the microsim slot so the flap on the cases covers trhe mic on the 3G version.

This seems a little pessimistic to me. Why assume they are going to have tons of defects? Won't google/asus have learned from the mistakes they made with the early wifis?
I didn't mean to be pessimistic at all .. just scared of that feeling when you wait so badly for that shiny device that you ever wanted but only to figure out that you have to sooooo lucky to get a (well-made) one without any defect !! I hate QC.
i see the need for this very much,
i just got the 32gb wifi only and maaaann.... the feel to the tab is just...different like the back panel feels...better i cant really explain it the unit feels heavier too.
Got mine this-morning. No defects at all. Why would you expect any? The Wifi version has been out for ages so any major defects would have been caught long ago by the early adopters.
The only "defect" per-se is deciding what the best deal on a SIM card is... 3 is probably the best network... but what one to order? All rather confusing for a poor old mouse brain.

I got mine last night. It has some backlight bleeding and also has these funky faded streaks (hard to explain) on a black screen these streaks give the blacks a washed out appearance. I compared it to my 16GB N7 which I got in Aug and I didn't notice these streaks but do have backlight bleeding on that one. I'm actually getting it replaced for these streaks but I've come to expect and even accept(as long as it's not horrible) backlight bleeding on Asus tablets. Having owned the TF101 (3 of them) the TF201(3 of them) and the infinity I have not came across a single one that didn't have some backlight bleeding to an extent or another. Some having it much worse while others maybe having just a small spot in the corner. But I honestly have not seen a single one (mine or a friend's) that didn't have backlight bleeding to some extent.
Mine has some very slight backlight bleeding, but nothing I'd complain about. Unfortunately, it does have the blown speaker issue...so an RMA replacement is on its way.
I bought a 2nd Nexus 7 3G version and all the issue of my 16gb WiFi are gone... The main problem the light flickering which is gone totally, also the screen is now flat with the bezel finally.

Mine is fine overall. There seems to be some slight backlight bleeding on the left side of the screen, but not major enough to RMA.
Speaker sounds fine too as far as I can tell. The only "issue" I think I can report is that when my tablet has been sleeping for a long time, the mobile data will cut itself back on if it's off. At least the mobile data works though. Anyone else experience this?

I forgot to mention that I have noticed my screen flickering a bit when in 'auto', and depending on the ambient light. It's almost like the screen can't decide where to set itself and is bouncing between 'levels'. The problem seems to go away completely when I just turn off the auto lighting and keep it at minumum (which is how I usually use it). Is this the screen flickering problem everyone keeps talking about?

Just got my replacement an hour ago. Body creaks less, bezel appears slightly more even (although the old one was really even to begin with), and speaker sounds MUCH better. Only slight buzzing from the 'notification' volume bar, default tone, at max. Everything else sounds clear. I'll have to watch the screen to see about flicker. I have noticed it switching levels, but haven't noticed it flicker yet. It also appears to have less light bleeding. So far so good...
Ok guys - I need an opinion. I've had some time to play with my replacement N7, and noticed some odd things. I ran the battery down last night just to make sure it wasn't a dud - got about 10hrs of video (minimum brightness, sound down). It's not as good as my first one, but I don't consider it a dud. However, after it died, I plugged it in. A half hour later, I tried to power it on to collect the batter logs (simple battery logger), and it wouldn't power on. I pressed the power button for 5 sec each time, nothing. No white battery charging logo either...just unresponsive. I kept trying and it finally booted. I think I had to hold the button for 10-15 sec - and the battery was charging and at 10%. Never happened like that with my old one - just a consistent 4 second press to power on. Does this thing need 10% before it will power on? Reading the forums, the power on issue seems to be common. Should I be worried about this? Should I just keep my original unit even though the speakers are bad? I really don't want to end up in the endless replacement loop. Do others here have occasional power up glitches?
