Opinions on HTC Desire Z/G2 - G2 and Desire Z General

I'm looking to buy a Desire Z as a gift, and wanted to get some second opinions on the phone. Is the keyboard decent? What's the speed like? How sturdy is the keyboard hinge?
Also, is it fairly easy to root?
I've got an original Desire myself so if it's a roughly similar experience to that but with a keyboard then that'll be good.
Cheers

It's a great phone, 2nd Gen Snapdragon, Adreno 205 GPU...but it is also fairly late in it's life. The keyboard is great, and while people have differing opinions on the hinge, I haven't had any problems.
Just know that it doesn't hold a candle to the 1GB Ram/Dual Core beasts being released today.
Sent from my T-mobile G2 using Tapatalk

The hinge problem has been previously blown up, it is fine.
I couldn't imagine living and typing longer than an sms without a keyboard, I still love it and use it for longer input. If I was buying a phone now I probably could sacrifice the keyboard for a front camera or more CPU power or so. I could even buy a Desire S or a Sensation (just to be in this pricerange). Phones change quickly, quadband is here, I still love this phone.

in my opinion its still a great phone... sure there are better ones out now rooting isn´t that easy, but not very hard too (if you know how to use adb, you are fine) If you are on 2.3+ it could happen that you need to create a goldcard while rooting...
...what rather concerns me right now is the fact that a lot of people seem to have a problem with a fried emmc chip.
here is a link to the wiki-guide for rooting (so you see how its done):

Thanks. Dual core and that isn't a concern, the intended owner is not really fussed about those kind of things, having a keyboard is more important, and I trust HTC as a brand.
Have ordered one now.

I sure wish you could NAME a better phone that is out now!
Remember, it must have the reliability, style, and expensive feel of the G2, must have a great hardware (real) keyboard and beautiful gorilla glass screen like G2, and must be root/developer friendly, have removable battery, and it must provide wifi calling in my weak signal area and free tethering and portable wifi hotspot, and do all of this for US$60/month no-contract service with unlimited 4G everything and no overage charges possible like my G2!
what better one ya got that does all of that?
that's right - NOTHING!

I concur, there is nothing else out there I could see me replacing it with at the moment. I need a hardware keyboard.. More ram and a faster CPU would be handy though... Refreshed DZ required

Great phone, and i will use this as long as it works. I'v had this about little over 11months now, no problems. Only thing is, screen has one frozen pixel in it, tough it's on the side, close to a corner so i barely even notice it, if i look for it, i can see it.
There is Motorola Droid 4 coming, sure looks nice whit that 5-row qwerty. If i would have waited a year longer to upgrade to smartphone world, id get it when it comes.
Now i'm planing on getting a tablet, to get the horsepower going on android. possibly transformer prime, or smth, wonder what CES brings to the table.
I love this phone! Sorry i got drifted to little off topic here.

I won't get another phone until there is a worthy successor. I would like to stick with HTC and I need a qwerty KB (well strongly prefer to have one) so here is hoping for a G3 sometime soon.
Until then though I still get great performance so no immediate rush.

There was also a Samsung qwerty slider I was reading about a while back, can't seem to find the article anymore.

Yea Samsung captivate glide, looks pretty good actually got a tegra 2 processor and 1gb ram... plus one of those beautiful Samsung screens

I agree with flinny if they can refresh desire z 2 aka htc t-mobile g3 with stock in usa. I would love to have front face camera,1gb of ram i hate using my mirror to video chat. Get amoled screen back like nexus one. Add the hardware 5 key rows they had on g1 to g3 .
Hopefully stop selling to many damn Htc phone their selling about 10-15 device every year i wish they can stay with 3-5. Limited their work because then they make users like me hack my phone to get update, that they should be doing themselves. Instead of making excuses on why they cant update 1 device to the other.

Looked very interesting to me at first, but reviews have been far from stellar:
http://techcrunch.com/2011/11/20/review-samsung-captivate-glide-att/
Looks like cheap exterior build quality, and crappy flat keyboard. Nice screen, but hardware specs are merely ok compared to other high end phones currently being released. A Galaxy IIS spec phone with decent keyboard would be killer. But this ain't that.
Can't any manufacturers come out with a high-spec phone, with a decent keyboard?

G1 Successors..

So I have been casually been browsing around off and on for the past few months for a rocking follow up phone to the G1.. Don't get me wrong- I absolutely love my G1. Ask anyone who knows me, I love it and it loves me. Nothing like owning the original android, and plus its a stellar phone. I looove the keyboard, there isnt another like it other there. It's just I havent been able to settle on a great daily ROM that is extremely stable, with good battery life and is snappy.
So I thought I would share my findings in my conquests to find some phones that us G1 fanatics could buy once we decide to put down our heavenly G1's.
1. Obviously first off there is the "G2". A great phone I might actually get once I finally part ways with the G1.
I was browsing Tmobile's site today and found another sweet quasi-G1 phone that are yet to release!
2. The Tmobile Sidekick 4G looks like it might be the first sidekick whose execution follows through on a cool phone concept. The keyboard looks very spacious and much like the G1 and plus its got the whole flip screen idea which seems kinda neat to me.. http://sidekick.t-mobile.com/
Feel free everyone to add any comments or any other phones that you think might fulfill a g1 user's dreams for the a future phone..
It looks like G2 is a name used for different phones. Can you link a picture?
I think a good successor may be the HTC Vision, http://www.newphones.org/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/HTC-Vision-phone.jpg
Desire Z would be the real successor.

It is not different except slightly with regard to the software on it. Also the compatible frequency set. If you're reading these forums, then the software it ships with doesn't matter to you to begin with.
BOTH are HTC VISION -- that is the real name of the hardware.
That samsung "sidekick" thing looks very similar in spec to the VISION. A couple of things to be aware of... samsung is known for poor quality "feel" (i.e., they feel cheap and plasticy), has had SEVERE problems with things like GPS.
Given the similarities in specs, you KNOW that the HTC VISION has been totally owned (you can take a brand new one from tmobile and run "gfree" on it and it instantly becomes full hardware and radio unlocked). The samsung is still an unknown quantity and a risk. Go with what is known. The VISION is an excellent phone and a worthy successor to the DREAM.
Note: I see that your carrier is ATT... you would be better off buying one from BELL CANADA than from tmobile because of frequency selection.
I thought the Tmobile G2 was the successor to the Tmobile G1. No debate? Lol

haha, yea I guess 'officially' you are right..
dhkr: Yea I was reading reviews, and heard pretty much the same thing about the sidekick.. The sidekicks always kind of 'appealed' to me, but now I think I am moving on past the 'cool' phone stage and looking at phones that are function based/pro (ie the G2).
Actually I will be getting a new plan come may so I might go with another carrier- we will see.. Gosh I keep lusting over the G2; it looks like wicked! Although I just recently rerooted my G1 and cant get enough of it; the original android = AWESOME!
I was just kind of posting this more for people to get informed about possible phones they could buy after their g1; phones similar to the g1. (rather than a 'what should i buy?' thread).. thanks for the input!
Agreed...Sidekick looks great, but I have had a long experience of reliability with my HTC phones...it would be hard to go past the G2/Desire Z
I had been looking quite closely at these phones. At first I really liked the Desire Z. I wanted one just by looking at it. I wouldn't have gotten rid of the G1 very easily though.
I'm changing my trail of thought though. I'm starting to look ahead to the XPERIA Pro. (Can't post a link, can't edit the post until after 5 minutes... getting tired of these forum restrictions. :/) I think this would be my G1 successor... maybe. I don't think I could afford this when it is properly released here until it becomes an average phone that's not capable of the latest software demands, but I'd damn sure love one of those in silver right now!
Thanks for the input, and I would agree that the xerpia pro looks very nice. At first glance it seems like it might be a bit flimsy; gosh those htc phones just have such a pro/smooth look.
Here are a few links for the Xerpia Pro and photos .. (sucks about the forum restrictions chocolate columbo, just keep posting!)

Looking spiffy but on first glance I might still prefer the G2.

well, although that phone looks rad, it does not really match the features we g1 lovers like.. mainly an awesome physical keyboard. I think I prefer the G2's maker (htc) over g2x (low build quality LG).
Being a g1 owner atm I do appreciate having a physical keyboard over touchscreen typing, however I'm sick of having smaller screens just cuz I prefer the latter. I don't really see why everyone trips out on how big or thin/small the phone is, its like if the phone isn't a .01mm leaner then the last everyone bashes it and calls it a brick. Ffs I love my fat g1 with extended 2300mah/bigger back cover to boot, I've never dropped it and its always comfortable holding it to type novels like this one or even play emulators on. I guess my main gripe is why nobody has yet to make an 4.3 inch slide out qwerty phone(closest being the epic, but samsung is fail!) My next phone will be the g2x I'm sick of waiting for my dream phone and hearing that cyanogen tweeted g2x is his next personal phone its really a no brainer for anyone that enjoys a stock android experience with tons of mods to come. To hell with the physical keyboard,G2x here I come!

I completely agree- it is very annoying to hear people bash the g1 without even trying it out. So once we have a type-off I can completely dominate them. People need to stop being so obsessed with the size/thickness of a phone. Please people, build quality, and functionality is way more important.
As far as screen size, yea sometimes the smallness of the g1 bothers me. I am stoked to upgrade to a g2 soon though because its a wee bit bigger of a screen
I've adapted to those comments. As you well know, even as big as it is considered, the practicality of the G1 will still outweigh a large majority of phones being made now.
As much as I love it, it is an old phone and it does show. People are going to be more impressed by weight, immediate GUI interface and screen size than much else.
I've had my G1 for a little over two years now. I could've upgraded back in December but that was a very slow time for phone releases. All the fastest phones had been out a while and nothing good had been announced for the near future. As soon as I found out they were releasing the G2X I knew what phone I was going to buy. I loved the G1 for it's stock UI, the keyboard, trackball, and all the dev support it got/gets. I have been feeling that the G1 is not enough for me anymore with it's dated hardware and (sorry for bringing up size) relatively large size compared to current phones. This thing just looks like a dinosaur and feels like I'm riding a bicycle when everyone's driving Corvettes. I'm very picky about what I want in a phone now and honestly the only thing I think the G2x is missing for my own taste is a track ball/pad. But considering I'm going to a 4" screen from a 3.2" I know I won't have a problem. Also, I'm an Nvidia fanboy .
Yes, good point about the trackball. I looooove my trackball, it makes scrolling so painless. But I agree that its hardware is very much dinosauresque which is why I am looking to upgrade.
I think the G2 is one of the best bets... the only problem I have with it is how old the tech is considering duel-core phones are cutting edge now.
For me... I'm thinking of the HTC Sensation.

What am I going to do now?

I bet I am not the only one feeling like this is the end of the line for my EVO.
I got MikG 2.1 on my phone and it is basically running as good as the hardware will let the EVO run. What now? I have been flashing OSs since the Blackberry days and I feel a big let down. I don;t see me going to the EVO 3D as it would not really improve my EVO experience all that much. I use my phone for business and personal stuff and it is doing a very good job.
What now???
I would go for the Galaxy S II when it comes out, or something else, since good things are coming.
The Galaxy SII looks good but I have not had very good luck with Samsung phones. SMH
As crazy as it might sound, I would consider going back to a Blackberry if they came out with a 4" plus screen. Like a Storm4. Crazy right? LOL
I feel the same way, on MikG 2.1 as well. The phone is just working too well to mess with! Can't complain about that. Don't worry though, just like with the hero ROMs and improvements will keep coming. The EVO is just in a weird place because handsets are more powerful now, it is a year old, and still keeps up rather than being totally outdated.

Very weird; I had to use my sister's Blackberry when my first Evo went missing, then got a replacement; I hated it, little keyboard, had to go all backways just to get something simple, like an alarm, and had to use the calendar to have more than one.
Personally, I would recommend you at least try the Galaxy S II; I've had good experiences with Samsung products [for what its worth], the phone will be a powerhouse, and if you don't like it, can always return it within the 30 days.

I still have my evo. I'm currently stripping it down to barebones and using my tablet for everything else. I was working on an updated gingerbread rom but those plans have changed now. The evo is still a great device as a phone and as a smartphone. It's just a shame people jumped ship just to have the latest and greatest. I simply just added what I wanted which was the htc evo view tablet.
I would go to a Sprint store or Radio shack and play with the Evo 3D. I thought i wouldn't like it after seeing all the negative reviews, but when I played with it in person, I was really impressed. Just seemed way better than I thought, and I even dig the 3D now.
I just posted my Evo on Craigslist a few minutes ago. If I get a buyer, I'll go get the 3D. Thought about waiting for the GS2, but not really a fan of Samsung phones...and the development community the 3D seems to be building up outweighs the specs for me.

The 3D is a really fast phone, played around with it yesterday but other then that I see no reason to pick it up. If it's not broken why mess with it?
Yeah some of the devs have moved onto the 3D, but this phone is far from dead. Let the excitement die down a bit and you will have plently of roms to flash in the future.

That's sidestepping the question though. He didn't ask what the difference was. He asked what could it do the Evo couldn't? Having a longer battery life is certainly nice, though. But as of right now, I can't see the dual core and ram being useful... maybe in six months?

Must of misread the question. The dual core plus more ram will be a huge factor on how much faster roms will run once these devs get root access. It will totally blow the Evo out of the water in that aspect for sure.

Lol no I've had a g2x dual core overclocked to 1.5ghz
Then moved to Sprint .. got the EVO 4G..
Now I have the EVO 3d.. even with "development" nothing will be much faster
We need ice cream to utilize the dual core/adreno220 chip set...
As for more RAM.... Hardly I'm at 122-200 mbs free... That means over 70% is being used for sense 3.0 and OS...
Honestly I'm selling my EVO 3d for a EVO 4g and a laptop in two days.... Don't bother with this 3vo as they call it... It honestly isn't much of an improvement
The only thing I can seeing it be good with is a stock aosp ROM like miui or cm

I am beginning to think the same way. I would not watch 3D movies on my EVO or take 3D videos. As tot he dual processor, what exactly will that do for me? Get my emails faster? Dial out faster? Surf the internet faster? Not unless we get steady 4G speeds or even really good 3G speeds. On wifi my EVO flies and does pretty good when I get good 3G service. So I am not sure what I would gain. I know when I went from Storm1 to Storm2 it was supposed to be such a big improvement but I did not see that much. I like Sense so I am not sure if I would go to Samsung but never know. I think I would switch more for longer battery life if a phone came out with that kind of technology. But, I don't see how these faster processors are going to help with that.

[Q] Quick question to you all =)

I've been filled with curiosity for a few weeks to see if any other person thinks the same way I do about the HTC G2. I don't know if any of you have noticed but the G Series phones have been like milestones on the android history the G1 started all and the G2 literary set a a milestone most app or games run from the G2 + no older phones. The G-Series has always just like the Nexus been the most future proof phones and HTC has proven to be one of the most reliable phone manufactures when it comes to top quality phones and updates. Anyways I don't know you guys but i would actually love to see a G3 but the question is what would you guys like to see in it seriously i wouldn't like the G3 to be like the G2 which came out with a single core CPU the same moment dual core CPUs came out it was kind of disappointing. So here successor are the specs that the G3 in my point of view should have to be really a true successor to the G-Series:
-Quad-Core CPU with atleast 1.5 to 2.0 Ghz (I dont know you guys but i would actually like to see once the quad core cpus come out to have a dedicated core go to the Phone part of android why? well whats the point of having a smart phone if when you need to make a call you phone or dialer crashes it would be awesome to have an entire core dedicated to the phone its all im saying.)
-Atleast 1GB of RAM
-5 Mega pixel to 8 Mega Pixel Back Cam with flash or dual flash
-Corning Glass Screen (I can't stress this enough lol its been in the G1 and G2 and its proven to extend the life of you phone heck my G1 still looks like taken right out of the box)
-Atleast 4GB of internal memory sure 8 or 16GB wont hurt but as a minimum 4GB and not like the G2 that we could only access 1.4Gb of the 4GB.
-HDMI, Front cam(Not really caring about this but it would be a nice extra), A kick stand( Why? well i would like to be able to use Bluetooth keyboard or atleast be able to see a movie without having to hold the phone.)
-Some Physical Buttons like the g1 had or atleast keep the trackball or trackpad helps a lot to some people.
-Built in keyboard why? simple G-Series has always had it and even if it adds a bit of bulk it keeps the G phones apart from the other phones.
-Battery well atleast 1,500mAh 1,300mAh isnt enough for anyone even those who arent power users 1,500 or 1,800 would help a lot.
-Vanilla Android the Google experience is just awesome =)
-HTC has to make it please ... not LG or any other company.
-Atleast a 4.0 inch screen nothing below 4.0 but nothing above 4.7 either if you wanted something so big you buy a tablet right?
-Hopefully the ports will have little door so dust wont get in them.(Atleast the ports that we dont use often, once again not a must but it would be awesome to have the option i guess)
-Ice cream Sandwich out of the box lol sure why not jejeje =P
I know this is a very dream like phone but... well the G-Series has always had top specs when they come out this is mostly the reason why the keep up to date for so long so yeah XD so what do you guys think?
I am in total agreement.
I just want the keyboard to be more like the G1 slideout and with dedicated numbers row.
I also want the volume rocker to be flush with the surface because I am tired of it getting pressed by mistake.
big plus on the corning glass screen..couldn't agree more.
we may have to wait a couple years for this tho... I'm ready for it now but I am dedicated to the G series.

Oh yeah i dont expect this to come out yet but hey i just don't want the G-Series to die its all and if it continues to keep its awesome features and keep coming out the same way it did before an awesome High-end phone which is totally worth every penny.
Why are there so few hardware keyboard phones out there? , my contract is up but there is no g2 replacement that i can see,

Well most companies want to go after the iPhone kind of look and go super thin and they exclude the keyboard out of most of the phones they make. The thing they dont notice is that android phones dont have to look like an iPhone heck one of the best things of having a keyboard and trackpad in a phone is that if you touch screen gets damaged and doesnt recognize your finger you can use the trackpad to move aroudn the interface and the keyboard to type so you can still use your phone in a worst case scenario unlike all the other phones. But hey the HTC G2 still is on the top of the best android phones since with a few mods you can make it as fast as the actual phones. we just have to see what happens with phones after quad core release and ice cream sandwich.
as a deaf android user...I really don't have much choice but to go after the keyboarder phones. if the G3 has no keyboard ill just die !)

I think we will see a really nice G3. The G1 was perfect for its time as far as I can see. What bugs me is that while there is nothing that holds a candle to a modded G2... why wasn't it closer to perfect for its time? I haven't had such a problem with other products that I knew we're the best out there. Cars, girls, video games, flatscreens, etc. I hope google steps there game up. Letting tmobile or htc mess things up is cool. I like money too, but seems like a bad long term business plan.

after the DZ being my first hw kb android device, i can safely say i will never ever go back to a touch screen only experience. eff that! this phone is also my first device with a gorilla glass screen, previous phone was a sony x10 (huge pos) and i am addicted to the gorilla glass' smoothness and toughness.
what i would LOVE to see in the G3:
4" or less size screen...more screen means more battery..
dual core cpu...again..should be less batt intensive than a quad core, and its a mobile device...we shouldnt need pc power hungry phones..optimize the code!
i love the kb the way it is, but eff the z-hinge. id rather a slide out like the milestone...something that feels and IS built tough
1gig + ram
4gig storage as you said is fine by me, i dont even use half of the g2's space lol.
battery is the wow factor, if they slammed a sweet 2000mah battery in it, charged top dollar for the device, id buy it. ill take an awesome battery and pretty good spec phone anyday over a top dollar cutting edge device i can only use for 6 hours lol.
thats my wish..id also like to keep trackpad, make the phone a tad sexier...maybe a nice all black finish with polished steel or chrome accents. the g2 is nice cept for the grey rubberized bits that discolor...if it was black im sure itd look a bit better..

i dont even count the G2X as a succesor of the g2
single core, no keyboard, froyo, and LG
wtf type of succesor is that?

lol god me either, successor cant be an lg. plus the g2x sux donkey dong compared to dz/g2!

Well ptesmoke the only reason i would like quad instead of dual is if one of the cores is phone dedicated that way we have 1 core for phone utilities and the other 3, 2 for processing date and 1 extra in case we need it. Of course if we cant get it to have a dedicated core to the OS or atleast the phone then sure ill go with a dual core but hey quad doesnt necesarly mean more bat.
To all the others yeah thats why i didnt mention the G2x at all in the post the only real improvement over the g2 was 8mp cam and front facing cam apart from that everything else ruined the phone instead of improving it.
I want a keyboard that slides in two directions.
First direction is the same as G1 and G2, down in landscape mode to revile the full qwerty-ness.
And another direction, slides down in portrait mode to revile a number pad. So some of the keys have a different function depending on which direction the keypad has been slid out.
Also, I'd like the keyboard to be blue tooth enabled so I can use it on other devices (while the G3 is sleeping).
sounds awesome, but 4 inch is a bit too big for me. i like it to stay as a phone. i mean i tried a tablet but it didnt replace my 13.3inch laptop.
all specs are going towards like a tablet hence i mentioned it.
Lol now that htc has beats audio it would be fun to also see it in a g3 like phone and well guys look i really love the 3.7 to 4.1 inch screen all im saying is that it shouldnt get smaller or to big anything between those 2 measurements im fine with and i know many of you are 2 besides if htc has proven something to us is that they have been able to make phones with keyboard and still reduce the weight everytime more and more so even if the phone gets a 4.0 inch screen it will weight less and still feel awesome. also i rather have a quad core than a dual core because when your not using all the core they usually go to idle and stop killing your battery and having 4 cores would allow us to stay in the top phones far more time than a dual core would sure we dont need them now but what about later on? i mean i rather have power and not use it than need it and not have it and end up overclocking the phone to high and killing it its all im saying =D but lol i wish we could know if htc will ever release they keep doing mytouch series which has gone down hill lately on most of them and the G series which has sold well they are letting it die XD.... i wonder what phone would be a good sustitution for the g2 if htc doesnt release a g3? i wonder if we should go with motorola since google owns it now maybe they will have better things and support? not sure what you guys think?
If HTC wants to see how to build the best hardware keyboard ever put on a cell phone, they need only look at their own HTC TouchPro2
what a shame the best keyboard of all time is stuck on a silly WinMo 6.1 phone!

Anyone Else Tired of Their Desire Z/G2?

Honestly not sure if its the phone or the OS Im tired of. Have been using my G2 for over a year, been using Android for the same amount of time (G2 was my first Android device). Lately I haven't been interested in trying any ROMs, none have really peaked my interest to be honest due to the little issues in them. Not sure what I should do from here......
End of small rant.
Anyone else feel the same way or am I alone?
I still love the phone but I am definitely getting a little bored with it. Same as with most things. After so long of use, it feels like it is time for something new.
I use MIUI and it seems the fastest and smoothest to me (probably as good as you can get on the hardware), so getting bored I try other ROMs but they aren't as smooth so I go back to MIUI. I think ICS might spice things up for a little while l, but I think an upgrade might help.

It's called "consumerism". Just use your DZ till it dies of a natural death >.>
i wasn't bored of it, i was simply tired of the lag, missed messages and genrally just the lack of RAM.
i took the plunge and moved to the desire HD (couldnt afford anything newer)
and i notice the difference in ram immediately, there are LOADS more apps open at once now, and everything just generally feels snappier. and even with all my apps open i have 100mb+ ram left, constantly,
it's a shame that the DZ didnt have more ram, because otherwise i think i could've stuck with it for so much longer.

Damnit I thanked instead of quoting at first. Oh well.
It's "piqued," FYI.
I still use mine all the time. I have ICS on it. And with supercharger it's plenty fast. And I can text sweet things to my gf much easier and quicker using the keyboard. That being said get a hercules and rock both.

What's with all of these posts really...If you're "tired" of the phone go buy another one and use this as a backup. A lot of people do it lately.
Sure - I would be happy to buy a new phone, just as soon as you can invent a phone that has the G2's reliability, developer support, style, at least as good of a real keyboard, display quality, and make sure it works with T-mobile so I can have unlimited everything, including wifi hotspot, free tethering and free wifi calling, and no overage charges possible for only $60/month no-contract!
Yeah, that's what I thought, the G2 has no upgrade that can be made, because it is the best phone/carrier combo out there!
But I do wish there was a magical way to have the reception in rural area and LTE deep building penetration that I envy on Verizon (but I don't envy paying nearly $200/month for the features listed above!)
Still love my phone since the day I got it. Reliable and tough, stylish and sleek. I do look forward to an upgrade, but it's not something that i'm set my heart to. Can't really beat the DZ =)
Can someone just lock this post? It's so silly to post stuff like this.
If you're tired of it, then get a new phone.
g2 has been an awesome phone especially for my first Android phone but I can't wait for the next g series or maybe I'll try out the gnex. Contracts not up till October so hopefully there'll be something cool out then
After a year of using something u naturally get bored of it but if ur that boored of it try getting a mytouch4gslide

Not bored,
I recently tried a few things to give my G2 a different look and feel. Here's what I have:
meXdroidMod Atomic ROM -- been using meXdroidMod for awhile now
GO Launcher EX ICS theme -- cool screen transitions, my favorite is sphere
GO Locker -- ICS style, and I don't have date and time showing
GO SMS Pro -- I have had this for awhile
GO Weather -- besides HD video background, I like the Temperature Trend among some of the other features
With a couple of apps and also creating shortcuts to access them easily and quickly, i find my G2 very useful and not boring. Now if only I had a bigger screen...
I never understood this emotion where people get bored of things and feel the need to get the newest stuff. To me, the G2 is a solid device and the only time I would ever think of changing is out of necessity: not so much boredom. If I needed a faster GPU or a larger screen or better speakers and so forth: I can definitely understand the decision then because you have a practical purpose for the future device. But to be bored of a device and wanting to upgrade for no other reason because of it is exactly what companies want you to do. convolution put it best, "consumerism", but I would also add the word "affluence" as well.

Lol you must be delusional. This is a great phone, but as soon as I find a nexus s I'm going back. Not only is the phone faster in both the CPU and gpu department, the wolfson sound chip is a god send for music lovers (the g2 can't power my 120$ Sony earbuds and as a result aren't as loud/bass cuts out at low frequencies) , you can't beat the samoled screen (after a little tweaking with voodoo colors it gives a better pq than my 40" ex400) and to top it off ics is smooth as a gyroscope. I can't tell a difference scrolling around home screens and menus compared to my buddies gnex. Dev support is off the charts. IMO the nexus s is the device to have over a gnex or gs2.

truth, it must be quoted. I've yet to see a newer phone with all the qualities I want in a phone. I'm extremely lucky that I got this phone with my family's contract, I had no idea of the developer support behind it when I did choose it.
G2 is my first android device too. And also one year I have been using it. I love my G2 just because it my "first time". I've tried almost every Rom from xda. And now using sense 3.5. But, frankly speaking, I'm considering t buy a new better one.

Wow, that audio chip intrigues me. I primarily use my phone as a music player at the gym and I like my music loud. However I get distortion when I try to adjust the frequencies past a certain point. Is this Wolfson chip a solution?

As Much as I love the G2.. qwerty newcomer phone..

Don't get me wrong, I love my G2. But that being said I also love android which means tons of widgets and apps which tend to slow the slightly slower (ie experienced ) processor/ram on the G2. And I have a pretty quick ICS rom..
But that being said I am constantly on the prowl keeping an eye for the much rumored G3. Im sure others are like me. Unfortunately HTC sounds a bit anti-qwerty (and more and more anti-developers) lately (karma=loss of market share?) so it might be forthcoming.. ever.. So we must to other qwerty's.. I love HTC build quality but if a nice samsung or motorola qwerty comes along I might be out..
Sorry to beat around the bush, but I found a newcomer which seems pretty rocking. Check it out!
(Granted the name is not as slick or sexy as G3.. and its on sprints network ewww haha)

Mmmm look at that 5 row qwerty!!
And engadget loved it : "This is one of the finest physical keyboards we've used on an Android device in quite some time."
Granted I dont use sprint/sprints bands but at least phone makers are making qwertys with at least reasonable specs and ICS. Perhaps they are getting smart and trying to capture the rest of RIMM's market share..
unuseable for anyone who isn't on sprint. embedded sim card and i heard, non replaceable battery
such nice spec but such locked down features......

I was looking at that my self and first of all motorolla from what i understand is even more anti dev than htc. Also the non removable battery kills it too as said before. I still have my fingers cross for the Galaxy Relay to have an S4
i like the phone.. just the fact that it's locked up tight like an adamantium chastity belt that's been welded shut rather than have a lock around it.
Yea the device is pretty nice but they totally dropped the ball on the embedded sim issue. While Motorola traditionally locks down their bootloader, this device is shipping with the ability to be unlocked.
If it had a removable sim & battery it would be totally killer, but it doesn't so it's a no starter.

Sprint and Verizon are not the carrier choice for people (like me) who always need to travel outside of US.

agree, too bad. Id probably drop everything for it if it were gsm with a removable sim card and battery.. too bad too sad
Somebody knows about good QWERTY Android phone (with native ICS)? Replacement for Desire Z / G2? Can´t google anything...
as of now? there's only the relay which has embedded sim and nonremoveable battery.. and another one.. i can't remember off hte top of my head but it's headed to tmobile i believe.. that means you'll be stuck with a quirky band that wont work anywhere else inthe world.

i might be mixing up. i know the cdma one, has non removable battery & sim.
although the tmo one still probalby just has tmo's bands only so it would only work halfway with other carrier's (say.. at&t or any other carrier around the world )
EDIT: after doing my reading again, what i was referring to was the photon. not the relay. Apologies >.<
This is proof that other manufacturers are hoping to cash in on HTC abandoning the original Android consumer base (those of us who prefer physical keyboards).

I like how you said "original android consumer base" its so true, its seems mfgs just want to be like apple and that was the reason i went with the G1, i HATE on screen typing, i LOVE keyboards but no mfg wants to release one that is equal to the specs of the latest non qwerty. If this relay comes out and only has an S3 then it just shows no one cares about us qwerty lovers.
I need someone to buy this, tear it apart, and take photos, so i can see if it´s possible to solder an other sim in there.
This really needs to come to europe.
I'm so with you on the "HATE on screen typing and LOVE keyboards". Good thing I baby my G2 cuz it looks like I may have to keep for as long as possible.
Is that the Droid 4?
I recently acquired a Motorola Droid 3, which looks VERY similar to the phone in your pictures, so I am thinking it is the Droid 4, which was recently released on Verizon. Seems to be something about cell phone companies and phone names, they want to give it a different name on every carrier...
Another keyboard phone of interest to some is the Samsung Galaxy Q. It is a low end phone, but has a very nice keyboard, better than any other Samsung phone with a keyboard I have seen. I bought one for my daughter, and it works quite well, especially considering the price.

And then hardwaremod the crap out of it.
