Buying Omnia 7? - Omnia 7 General

Dear users,
Im doubting between an Omnia 7 and an HTC HD7.
Today I visited the Omnia 7 forum for the first time, but I can see that there are a lot of complaints. So now it made me doubt between the omnia 7 and the hd7.
What is your advice, should I buy the Omnia 7(it is much cheaper) or the hd7?

BTW: I'm currently using an AT&T Samsung Captivate, which is being repaired at the moment. I'm done with Android, that is why I want a Windows Phone.

A few months ago I loved this phone and would have reccomended it. I've now had it a year, my sister has one too. However as you can see by a post I started the other day over time it's developing more and more problems.
These are not WP7 problems... i'd say they are related to the Samsung firmware aspect.
I love the WP7 platform, my next phone will definitely be WP7. However I will more than likely go for a Nokia. Is the Lumia not an option for you?
My personal opinion is that i could not reccomend this model to anyone. If I was offered a replacement for a HD7 now i'd take it.
Sorry to sound negative, there are many people here who are pefectly happy with theirs. I may just be unlucky with mine.

Well, I own an Android phone right now and I want to test windows 7 myself before buying a more expensive phone. I want to use a 'cheaper' wp7 phone for like a year and then buy a phone like the HTC Titan.
The Lumia looks good,but is now way too expensive plus I want a 4.0 inch or bigger screen.

I recommend you a samsung omnia 7.
previosly I had a HD7 for few months- but the omnia 7 are much better, faster, with best super AMOLED, good battery time and my was 200,00 €. The screen from HD7 is more grey as black. I'm very happy with my omnia7 ... Is also very good with finctions and jailbreak ...
and if 3,7" the htc mozart are a good and cheap

I just don't want to flash or do anything with the phone, just install the updates through Zune. So no modding at all

For starters, this is my opinion.
The Omnia 7 has a far better screen (AMOLED) and the battery life is better. The looks and feels of the Omnia 7 is also better than the HD7.
But if you want to spend some more bucks I would also advice to buy the Lumnia 800.

I can recommend you the Omnia 7. I (we) got 3 of them.
One for myself, one for my father and recently bought one for my brother.
I did not expirience any troubles till now. Samsung Omnia 7 was the best of all Windows Phones, before Nokia Lumia, HTC Titan and the rest began to appear. There have been hundrets of reviews saying the same.

The phone its worth its price, its even too cheap for it. 16 Gigs, a cripst Super Amoled screen, pretty good battery life, and a neat design.
When looking on the phone, it simply looks like something unique when you see the tiles flowing through your screen with the black background and the black design.
Amoled screens offer the best black color, its the darkest of them all. Also the contrast, viewing angles and the brightness is better compared to S-LCD's like of the HD7.
I didn't like the HD7, it kind of feels a bit too "massive" and "cheap" I would say. In my opinion it looks like a brick.
I felt for the Omnia 7 design which is like a chocolate bar. It also fits pretty well into your hands, its not too big, not too small. Because of the curved back it is easy to hold. Also it doesn't make you think its some cheap hardware you paid a bunch of money for.
The aluminium back feels some kind of soft, if the phone was used for a while and got warm. You can warm it with your hands pretty easily within a short time.
The camera is pretty good for a phone I would say, it takes awesome pictures at daylight. In night its still well, but you can notice some edges that are not as sharp as in daylight. Still a lot better than the HD7's capabilities of recording.
In video mode, you can take videos up to 720p. It looks vivid and fast on VGA recording, but you will notice some performance loss when recording 720p. (Its also normal, same stuff on any other wp7, except 2nd generation like lumia)
The video playback (1080p movies and the recorded ones) are damn smooth.
No pixel errors, natural colors and it doesnt get stuck at all. You wont notice anything slowing down, also not at web playback like youtube videos on 1080p or megavideo ones.
I have had before a Samsung Galaxy S I9000, before I switched to HTC Mozart and then to Omnia 7.
If I it was necessary, I would buy another one of this one.
When you buy the phone, you are supplied an older version of the OS running on it. It is laggy and simply said sucks. Later you receive the NoDo update providing a huge boost in performance. The last update you receive will be the Mango one as you know, it changes the whole phone and it cannot be compared anymore to the ones running older versions of WP. It will get very fast.
I compared mine with carried supplied OS (older than NoDo), with the NoDo one of my father, and my own one with 7720 (now 7740). You can notice big differences.
I spent a bunch of time writing this, so others can also read this.
I cant complain about this phone after 1 year of usage and recommend it to everyone. You wont find another phone this good for 200 bucks.
Hardware is fine, Quality is fine, Screen is fine. Doesnt feel cheap and comes with pretty good Headphones.

If you want an experiment, sure go for it. If not go for one of the new models, Nokia Lumia 800 would be my best advise. It has superior build quality and a good screen. Nokia is also known for good support and quick updates and fixes.

I have mine for nearly a month and already two accident drops - one from nearly 1 m on it's screen, no scratch or anything problem after that

Well it depends what you want.
If you want to save some money and still get the best of the first generation, pick the Omnia 7.
Else if you got a big bank next to you, take as stated before either the Lumia or the Titan.
Titan offers a bigger screen, while Nokia has a smaller and better one.
The Lumia looks better and has exclusive apps. Later also Nokia exclusive games will follow. You do even get a 50 bucks gift card to buy apps.
So yeah its up to you.

I'd say Windows Phone 7 in general and Samsung Omnia 7 specially is not where you can play a lot ... so if you want to get a phone that calls and runs only few apps and that's it, then go for it, otherwise if you want to experience with it, then this is not the right choice.
as I understood from what you earlier wrote, I guess you already made your choice and you'll go for Omnia 7.

lol you sound just like me! I have an HTC Desire HD and it's currently off for repairs too. I've been curious about WinPho 7 for a while and the Microsoft demo site for it, despite being really limited, impressed me. I've got an Omnia 7 coming to me on Wednesday. I'll post my thoughts as an Android user when I get it up and running. This will also be my first Samsung phone so that's another first for me to experience but I am looking forward to it, especially that gorgeous screen!

I've had a few days to play with the phone now and overall it's pretty solid. The screen on the Samsung is gorgeous with black areas looking like there's no screen on at all instead of the muddy, dark grey on my Desire HD.
The UI is simple to use, transitions are quick and apps load quickly enough like the DHD. Unfortunately there are still limited amounts of apps with it looking like there are far more paid than free apps in comparison to Android. Sadly I'm also noticing a lack of apps that I would normally use with a few exceptions. A few apps I have like Shazam Encore is being charged at £3.99 on the WinPho 7 Marketplace but far less on the Android Market. I can't say what it normally costs currently as it's on sale for 10p. The main apps you might use like Twitter, Facebore ... sorry Facebook and YouTube are available and the UI is the same throughout each so you always know how to find items. A bonus that seems to be applicable to all apps is that they have a "Try" option. They might be limited in some way or have ads displayed. If you like it you can "Buy" it, and it'll unlock or remove ads. Similar to Android offering refunds but with this I don't think there are limits on trials unless they're displayed in the description.
You can sync photos to SkyDrive when they're taken or choose to upload them manually but there's no Dropbox app available currently. The easiest way I found to get images on the phone for use as wallpapers (lockscreen and photo hub background) was to create a folder on my PC, drop the images in and sync it.
Auto-rotate..... oh boy do I hate this. Auto-rotate is always on and there's no toggle option to turn it off. Why is it an issue? I use my phone in bed to check a few things like Twitter or if I get a text message and after unlocking it and loading the app it'll flip to landscape unless I sit up. Small annoyance but one Android lets you toggle. It's quick enough to rotate and it might not annoy others but that's my thought on it.
Background updates are something I was curious about since it wasn't allowed outside a few apps at launch but has supposedly been allowed more widely in Mango / 7.5 and that may be true but finding apps that take advantage of it isn't easy. Mango apps can use live tiles that update in the background but unless you know an app can do it you'd normally end up looking through each one to find it mentioned. There is an app that will help you do it called AppFlow but if you didn't know that you'd be stuck. I'd like to say that the apps I have with live tiles enabled work flawlessly but they don't. I have a Twitter app (not the official app, that sucks just like on Android) that supposedly updates every 30 minutes or so (no option to choose) and I have not yet seen a live tile update from it even with the option selected. I may be doing something wrong, I don't know, I'm still getting used to things. I'm pretty sure I know what I'm doing though and if so then background updating needs work or apps need more work to make it happen.
Final thoughts are really that it seems very much like Android when I got my G1 way back when it was new which was before even Cupcake / Android 1.5 was around. It has a lot of potential, there are some great touches (keeping the UI consistent throughout and with apps is good) and even with carriers customising all they can do is add apps and maybe a theme. You can uninstall the apps (I did, take THAT Orange!) and change theme with no issues. It's similar to Android back then but with more polish overall. With updates I can only see it getting better. Basically I can see it improving and being a competitor but how long that takes I can't guess. I wouldn't give up Android for it but I'm definitely keeping an eye on it to see where it goes.
Any questions? Let me know and I'll try to answer them but otherwise those are my thoughts on Windows Phone 7.5 after using Android exclusively from release.

I am using the Omnia 7 now for one year. I am using it mainly for work (exchange, phone, look at email attachments like powerpoint, etc.) I am synching 3 mail accounts and play from time to time.
Within that year I had not only one "strange situation" with the phone like reboots or not available via phone or Bluetooth disconnects. It is very reliable.
I owned also the Mozart which was far away from the Omnia 7 (battery, display, reliability, etc.). The HD7 has a poor Display. If you are using black background and scroll through your apps you can hardly see the white writing.
I would buy it again - especially for the current price.

Omnia has a much more impressive screen. The HD7 however can use custom roms and allows for greater degree of customisation

The Omnia's screen is the most impresive I've ever seen and among the things I noticed first about the phone. I hear a lot of bad things about Samsung build quality but honestly I feel that the phone is very solidly built and this is the first Samsung phone that I've owned.
I considered the HD7 and the size appealed to me at 4.3" because that's the same as my Desire HD but the 4" Omnia isn't that bad to use. I've got 3.7", 4" and 4.3" display phones and I thought that the Omnia was going to be similar to the Milestone / Droid but that extra little size just pushes it into the right size for my hands. That's a bonus to me because I can now consider 4" and up phones in the future but it'll also make me seriously consider Samsung AND Windows Phone 7 handsets and that's not something I thought I'd say with Android 4.0 / ICS impressing me a lot.
The single biggest factor against WinPho for me is still the lack of apps for things I'd consider popular. I couldn't think of real examples before but after getting my Desire HD back I can list a few.
Dropbox
Google products (GMail integrated but no app) such as Google+, GTalk, Maps
Amazon apps (MP3, shopping)
There are more but they're more personal use items that won't apply to most people. These, however, I've missed quite a lot. It won't matter to others and there are bound to be apps I don't miss that others do. It's just a matter of time really and that makes it difficult to pick one OS over the other.

Advice: Nexus One over iPhone (not quite a vs. thread)

So I am looking to purchase a Nexus One sometime within the next month or so. I'm an AT&T user and currently am using the FUZE with a custom ROM and running the Eclair XDAndroid build, which obviously doesn't compare to a real android device in any way, shape, or form. I'm completely aware of the features and abilities of both the iPhone and the N1, so this isn't really a feature comparison thread. On paper I know what the N1 is capable of, and everyone I know (literally) has a freaking iPhone so I know what that is capable of in the real world with real use.
Getting to the point, since you folks have been using the N1, may I ask what you like about your N1 over the iPhone? I'm following threads and seeing people with dust complaints, tinted screens, horrifying battery life, the touch sensitive buttons at the bottom not responding... and I'm just struggling on convincing myself to spend over $530 USD on a phone that could cause me problems over spending $300 USD on an iPhone that I know performs very well and already has a ton of memory built in, but lacks everything else that I want in the N1. Are most of these issues from earlier models of the phone? Do they occur more in say the T-Mobile version over the AT&T version (or vice-versa)?
I know this probably seems like a dumb thread, but I've searched and I've heard all the comparisons for features, but I just want to hear your comparisons through actual real world experience with the device (even if you haven't use the iPhone. Oh, and I did see the CNET video of the iPhone vs N1 brawl and that definitely is helping me lean more and more towards the N1.
Any advice would be great. Just please don't turn this into a flame war, both phones are fantastic in their own ways.

all those issues only apply to a select few or to people that have major ocd..i did like my iphone but i didnt love it..i love my nexus one its a really great phone..i love that i can use it to tether too my laptop, use it as BRIGHT flash light, customize it too my liking, and not having to deal with iphone.
The one thing i did miss when i went back to android from my iphone was the games..iphone games are really really nice but that feeling has gone away since now alot of the 3d games on the iphone are being made for android.
the iphone is a great phone but the UI is sooooooooooo boring..i hated that 4x4 icon page on it.i love having widgets
so to sum it all up get a nexus one......and a ipad ahah

But it is nice to hear you love your N1, the only apple fanboy thing I'm into is their operating system, anything outside of that I'm not really a huge fan of Apple (I stuck with WinMo just because I could customize it without hassle, unlike the iPhone which is a risk to brick every time you jailbreak it and there's a firmware update)

ya i love my macbook its the best thing that ever happened to me ahah..and honestly the chance of bricking and iphone while jailbreaking is slim to none but its a pain when apple is constantly sending you updates to unjailbreak it..trust me you will not be jealous of their iphones

Awesome note with the games though, I don't play games on my phone much (sadly I'm horribly addicted to solitaire...haha) so I never really got into the games aspect, I only have one or two on my iPod Touch, most of the time I use the basic Apps which are also available on Android (twitter, facebook, shazaam, things like that). So that's a good thing to keep in mind.
I think one of my biggest worries is battery life. I don't work a job where I can charge my phone at all throughout the day, and there are times I leave at 8am and don't get home until 7pm or later, and I don't want to have to worry that my phone won't make it. My WinMo phone always ends at around 60% with standard/moderate use so I never have to worry about running home to get a charge if I get hung up after work.

battery is amazing for me. no dead pixels. saturated screen. bright flashlight (nexus one torch).. idk so many to list.
if you wanna buy RIGHT NOW. go for the nexus one,

if you can wait til July...... wait. becuase you may regret it if you dont have the money to buy the newest badass thing, like maybe the 4Gen iPhone, and new product from HTC, or anyone... really its all so hard to tell but if you can wait, i think that'd be in your best interest.
and the only thing i miss about the iphone thats slowly sucking me back in (happens about twice a year, ive owned all the iphones and sold them too haha) is the slickkkkkk UI. the LARGE community and the apps that actually work clean, and flawlessly. the iphones' transition between homescreens is definitely smooth as butter. nexus one? smooth as sand paper.. the ability to take screen shots on the iphone with ease... idk.. haha

nexus one last me a whole a day with heavy usage (texting, internet, games, music, calling) i disagree with the slick UI..iphone has a HORRIBLE UI in my opinion its too plain and transition is just as smooth..the community for android is also huge and screenshots is easy too..just shake the phone (shootme app on market)

i totally agree.. just one night i forgot to plug it in. died later that day though (didnt necessarily let it "die" i just shut it off at like 2%)

My phone is simply perfect. No issues whatsoever, apparently I am one of the lucky Nexus owners. The only thing though, I do like about the iPhone more - is the UI polish. Apple is simply great at designing things. I'm ok though, as long as I have a Desire ROM. HTC Sense is quite nice.

Youll be happy with the nexus. It is great now and stands to realize much of its latent potential if Google wants it to. If you've had an iPhone you will definitely be disappointed in the touch screen. It's possible though that Android might be able to iron out some of the jittery, jumpiness of the nexus touch screen. But its a decent screen,those who have never used an iPhone think the nexus has the best touch screen there is so its definitely not a deal breaker.
Also, the nexus has higher resolution but I don't think there's and denying that the iPhone just looks crisper, especially the browser. But the nexus gpu definitely loads pages faster. I think I'm just rambling now...

It all comes down to your personal preference. You can read all types of reviews and you'll see that Nexus One wins over iPhone 3GS. The features of the phone are outstanding. Just ask yourself what you want in your phone. If you want lots of applications, music, go for iPhone but if you want free applications, customizations, widgets, great camera, blazing fast web experience, go for Nexus One. Its just a matter of time before android applications touch the mark set by iPhone. Once you root your Nexus One, its going to be a whole world of possibilities....
For the issues you read about Nexus One, I want to tell you that the tinted screen is only present in the newer devices which would be very soon fixed by an update. The capacitive buttons work perfectly when pressed on the upper half of the button. The dust problem is present in a very small no. or hardwares and if you live in US, then you can call for a replacement if it happens with you.
Android would very soon be taken up by most of the mobile makers as its open sourced and free. I read somewhere that the phone companies who have taken up android OS have to pay very little in comparison to Windows Mobile.
So go for Nexus One, you wont be sorry....

Having thought about it I realised that the choice to go for an N1 is easy if it fits your needs. Since it has been released all the focus has been on how it compares to the iphone. Understandable as apple set a high bar with many features such as the apps, the graphical physics and ease of use. The n1 more or less matches them and comparing many of these features doesn't get you far. They both are fantastic bits of hardware, great screens, amazing computing power, touchscreens etc. In some ways the N1 performs a bit better in others the iphone but the differences between them are small.
However I think the N1 has gone to a new level with features the iphone simply hasn't got. I don't have to open an app to access the information I want. My calender, agenda, weather, news, daily Bible reading, personal photo's, music player (and playlists) one touch dialling to favourite contacts (and many other thing I don't use) all run on my home pages. And here's where it moves mobile information on; all these widgets update automatically and wirelessly. I don't have to plug my phone into my computer to update my agenda, it happen without hassle right onto my homescreen. Furthermore these services are free - and yes I did pay for mobile me and no its not worth it.
Bottom line is that both the iphone and the N1 are great bits of kit, you won't notice many gains in function between either hardware as far as I can tell but the software has moved on from simply apps. Unfortunately the press just focus on the things that you can compare but the how can you compare widget on a N1 to nothing on the iphone? The N1 is in a different class to the iphone because it does things the iphone can't dream of doing, try to keep up apple!

Thank You everybody. Your advice has been helpful. I actually feel that the Android UI is nicer than the iPhone, to me the iPhone seems plain. Though I will admit that the iPhone is probably a little more user friendly, I don't mind the extra clicks on Android, and it's not like it's difficult to figure out by any stretch of the means. And it's good to know that the issues people are having are only occurring in a small percentage of devices, I was really worried that I would throw down that kind of money and have a jacked phone that only lasted me half a day and had a dusty mis-tinted screen...haha. Hopefully I'll be able to get my N1 ordered by the end of this month.
The next step would be rooting. I don't think I'll root it until after the warranty is up, but I don't know, I said the same thing about ROMing my FUZE and that didn't happen. Though on an unrelated question, how come so many N1 ROM threads don't have screenshots of the ROM. The ShootMe app works great, I use it on my FUZE with Eclair. actually its less clicks for android lol you know with the widgets and all..with the iphone it takes four clicks to modify your brightness for android it takes one, it takes 3 clicks to turn on wifi and bluetooth on iphone and on android it takes one, it takes 4 clicks for gps on iphone and android 1, it takes 3 clicks to post something on facebook and 1 on android (same for myspace), it takes takes 2 clicks to search on iphone and none on android..you see my point lol

Warranty is 1 year, you will get hot feet by then. There should be desire screenshots around. CyanogenMod's UI is identical to stock, extra features being the selling point.

Are you running on the HTC Li-Ion battery or some new U-235 battery?

The Nexus One is great. I don't have complaints so far other than the tiny loudspeaker. Heard that the Desire ROM gives it a louder volume. Anyway, like someone has pointed out, if you can wait until June, I would wait. I think Apple sees the Android OS as a thread so they must be building something big for the iphone 4Gen. The iphone 4Gen will probably be better the Nexus One... BUT I am confident that the Nexus Two or whatever Google wants to release in the future will take over eventually
Not saying the Nexus One will lose to the 4Gen for sure. Remember FroYo and Flash 10 are coming to the Nexus One.

I am a Xperia X1 user and am looking for a good android phone, which I have narrowed down to a Desire or a SGS.
I really like the added benefits of the SGS (Better Screen, 8GB internal memory, HD Video), but cannot deny the fact that the UI on the Desire (Sense) is much better than the Samsung setup….
What are your opinions on the standard system?
The reason why I am asking here is that you all will generally have experience with Sense, which all of the custom ROMs for my xperia has been brilliant over the past 18months (kept it alive).
I notice that the SGS XDA portal, has a lot less posts than the HTC Desire forum, but I am hoping that this is due to the fact that the Desire has been out longer than the Samsung.
I am due to upgrade my phone in 10 days so need to figure out which way to go.
All opinions are welcome!

When I purchase this phone my thought was:
1. UI and software can be update and modified, hardwares are fixed.
2. Communities and 3rd party supports for this phone, which are great right now.
These are enough for me.

I've had an iPhone 3G and a 3GS. Sold the 3GS a month ago to buy the iPhone 4. Due to every shop being out of stock on these babys, I decided to give Android a chance.
I nearly bought the Xperia X10 but in some shop they had a Galaxy S Demo Unit. I grabbed it and fell in love with it. It's so light-weight compared to other smartphones!
When I went home with it, I read some footage about it on engadget, gizmodo, etc. I didn't know it was the strongest Android phone at this time. I was very surprised and even more in love!
The screen is a blast.

I was in the same situation, though I was coming from a WinMo handset. I'm so happy with my choice, I know a few nexus one and desire owners who are now wanting a SCS - which says a lot.

My last phone was an HD2 with WinMo 6.5.5 wich have a wunderful community (Android development very fast).
But the Samsung i9000 is a nice Phone, with a wunderful screen, and 720p videoplayback and recording. And of corse, Android.
(Faster than HD2 [thanks Android], more Apps, 720p rec/play, etc...)

Thanks very much for the feedback guys... its good to get opionions of Win Mo users switching, as most reviews I have read on the internet is based on prev Iphone users (who's opinions I do not value).
Are you guys mostly using the stock SGS software, or running custom roms?

Do you prefer this phone to your HD2? The HD2 was a great phone (as was the TyTn II)!

I am using factory's rom with a little bit of addition: rooting + auto killer to manage memories.
From an Omnia i900 winmo. 6.5.5 user, I have no lags problem on this phone.

Well, how about the opinion of a user switching between iPhone 3GS, Symbian s60v3 and v5, WinMo6, 6.1, and 6.5 and Android 1.5, 1.6, and 2.1 phones, in order to find my perfect suite?!? Actually my last/previous phone was Vivaz PRO
It is really the best phone that i laid my hands on up to now.
Hardware-wise, unbelievable super AMOLED multi-touch screen, fantastic HD video camera, super-fast CPU, a lot of RAM, 8GB internal memory and VERY VERY light! (OK, I miss the LED flash, but I can live with that).
Software-wise, I believe, after a lot of experience with multiple OSs, that Android is the future (at least for the next couple of years). Very smooth OS, open to do everything you wish (root, custom firmware, install pirate soft, etc) easily, and VERY FAST GROWING/UPDATING (compared with WinMo and symbian, that feel a bit ancient by now).
Go for it bro! You wont regret!

If you are like me and use gps navigation a lot, simply run away from this phone.
I am now back to my HD2 (so happy I did not sell it). No navigation software can compare with tom tom.
All in all galaxy s has:
Superb screen:
HD video recording
And that is about it….
The gps is rubbish, don’t listen to the people telling you that they fixed it…
All “fixes” are just to provide fast network location fix (which in most cases is inaccurate)
With my HD2 it does not matter how cloudy it is, and how tall are the buildings around me,
I have GPS fix in 3-5sec and I MEAN GPS FIX, not network location fix.
SO I KNOW EXACTLY WHERE I AM.
2 days ago I was in central London and tried to find the closest tesco with google maps…
After 5min I just gave up… galaxy s simply could not do it
With HD2 things like that takes 10 to 20 sec (including typing tesco in the search bar)
I am also very disappointed with the android OS,
This thing does not even support external gps… we had that in winmo 10 years ago…
It has all sorts of problems, for example application starting on the background (consuming data) and there is simply no way for the user to control that.
One more thing the internal memory card is very very very slow and this slows down the devise a lot. Sure people will tell you about the sd card fix but REALLYYYY… should I start fixing the Samsung rubbish? No thanks, will stay away from Samsung and android for another 2 years (at least)

same here i always purchase my smartphones by the hardware spec, and the amount of Forums/groups available for it.
unfortunately the HTC Athena was flawed, the device itself is amazingly great, howerver support for it was low.
SGS i9000 on the other hand has a very lively group just like HTC Desire

mitko76 Good luck doing anything with GPS in central London...Buildings have this horrible side effect on ALL GPS systems.
Google maps is easily the best Search for phone, but not the greatest GPS, since is need a Connection to work if you deviate from the rout too much.
I've had this phone for w eek now and it is a great phone, there are a few niggles in the software, but believe me way less than stock windows mobile 6.5.
The screen isn;t as crisp as people would have you believe, White text on a dark background gives you a red effect around text and text Isn;t smooth, no where near the Iphone 4 IMO, however the contrast and colours are superb.
Give it a go if your on contract you have 7 days to return it.

As a x1 user who has just upgraded to a Galaxy S a week past i can say that it is definetly worth it.
I did own a Desire for a day when i got it on contract but i didn't get coverage for the network in my area.
I find the Galaxy S to be a nicer looking phone, screen looks a lot brighter and better. Sound quality from the speaker is better and the UI also seems much faster.

It's a great phone, no questions asked, but you have to realize that it needs some work (like the fixes and all) and customization.
I'm using the imfamous JF3 stock rom and i do notice some lags and battery drain (but I use it very heavily, frequent syncs and updates, tons of widgets and all that) so i'm gonna switch over to the better ones.
I come from the Omnia II wich was a great phone but very poorly supported by samsung and the community. This isn't the case at all for the SGS. I used to have sense on my device, big fan of sense, but i like the SGS homescreen as well with the different pannels, really like it. Touchwizz is sort of a love/hate relationship
I'm loving android so far, even though i don't understand everything, i'm sure i could enhance my phone a lot.

Logicalstep, that is what I am trying to explain .. I DO NOT NEED “Good Luck” when using my hd2’s gps in central London, it simply work. I work in central London so trust me, I know what I am talking about.
If you are coming from a phone with poor gps I can understand your point, but hd2 simply has a proper gps unit in it and it is working no matter where I am. With HD2 I can even get gps lock in the train (10 sec), tried this with galaxy s and guess what... it FAILED (after 10min).
You can keep convincing yourself that the buildings are high, the sky is cloudy or God knows what ..
But the simple truth is the gps is rubbish.
Keep waiting for the NEXT firmware to fix the issues, and when it failed keep waiting for the next one and so on....

Mitko please do us a favour and leave the forum, we know that you sold your Galaxy S, and frankly its quite boring to see you posting on every thread and preaching slander. The GPS does take a short while to position (about 30-40 secs) but after that it works perfectly for me. I have used it on several occasions when lost in central London.

Since last December I've owned the following handsets: N900, HD2, Desire, X10, Galaxy S.
Of all of these the Galaxy S is my favorite, followed very closely by the HD2.

Coming from you that is high praise indeed.
Loving my SGS, no way am I going back to Symbian.

On my side I am coming from winmo6.5 and then iphone3GS
if i had an advice to give you in order to choose between the desire and the samsung it would be to know that :
* you won't have HTC sense on samsung ... I mean really nothing comparable.
* there is almost no button on the samsung .No trackball ( painfull for selection) no LED ... and it's quite annoying some time
Yes when I compare both with my colleague , mine has a better screen ( bigger , brighter) but it will worth it if you watch a lot of video or look at a lot of picture. If it's just to have more beautifull icon ... you will forget it looks better after few weeks
I am still a little bit uncertain about the GPS ... I need to do more tests and to check the settings I could enhance but it can't be compared to my TomTom ( on both winmo and iphone)
Hopefully there will be soon a real fix for the slowness of the SD card ... hopefully ...

I used the phone briefly in a phone shop yesterday, and I have to say that it looks very impressive! Especially compared to my x1 running Windows 6.5.3. The only first negative impression that I had was how cheap and flimsy the back cover was...but I hey, I know no phone will be perfect.
When my contract is up next week, and I am going to go for the SGS and as Logicalstep has commented I have 7 days to return it if unhappy.
I really appreciate the feedback, as it has made me allot more comfortable with going for the SGS.

And honestly i agree about the cheap looking back but honestly that's why it is so light and you forget about this quickly.
Especially if you add a case ( you have some very thin one)

HD2 vs Galaxy S - Which would you take?

Short version here is that I already have a HD2 and currently playing with the Android builds that are available.
Now I've just been given a Samsung Galaxy S with an upgrade (get it in 2 days) and I must admit as much as I'd like to keep it, there's a part of me that thinks that the HD2 is the better phone, especially as it looks like we are going to have a stable droid build in the near future (devs really are top folk).
So, take the phone built for droid or stick with what I have and hope droid gets perfected on it in the near future?

It's hard to say. It really depends what OS you favor. If you like WM (as a backup) and Android (albeit buggy and laggy) on the same phone, take the HD2. If you want Android to be the primary OS, take the Galaxy S.
Keep in mind the Android port won't be perfect (at least for a while). For example, the Rhodium (Touch Pro2) port has been going on longer than the HD2 port, and it still has many bugs and features that do not work.
If you really want both devices, why not keep both and alternate phones each week?
I'm personally not ready to switch to Android as a full-time OS on a phone. WM has a lot of tweakability inside and Android still has its time to mature.

See where you are coming from and if I can get away with it may just sneak the samsung away
I've always like WM over the years and love the tweaking abilities with it, I think I'm just a bit tired of it on the HD2 as IMO you still need a stylus when you get past the front end, well I do with my big chubby fingers LOL
Android is nice, had a Nexus One when they first came out but found the camera and a few other things lacking so sold it pretty quick.
To many toys and not enough time I suppose LOL

Well, atm it's very hard to say. As I own a HD2 and like it still very much, I'm not planning to buy a new toy within the next, let's say 3 months. After that I will definitely buy an Android-phone because WP7 sucks already D) and the HD2 will stay THE WM6.5.x-phone - maybe forever.
If I had to buy an Android-phone tomorrow, I'd buy a Galaxy S (Pro) - but I think I would sell it again for the next Android-flagship by HTC, what ever it will be.

if you like to have a faster gpu than go for the galaxy S because it has the fastest gpu units of all smartphones today

Personally I am biased towards android. If it werent for the 4.3 inch display of the hd2 I would have dumped it long ago. Windows mobile is so mature that At the end of this year windows phone 7 is coming out. People have all but stopped developing stuff for it. It still has a great community in xda but frankly windows mobile interface sucks. Maybe I'm a dunce but I could never find proper twitter widgets.
Android isnt perfect on the hd2 and may never be. But lets see I think bluetooth and the camcorder mode doesnt work. Also call quality may be lacking. All things I Can deal with.
Personally Ive seen the samsung captivate which I believe is the At&t variant and I love it. Save yourself and stick which the phone thats native android.

I played with AT&T's version at the store. I don't like Samsung's UI much, but the screen rocks. I didn't notice the screen size difference much.
Deal breaker for me is actually the charging port. It's microUSB with a slick slide cover, BUT THEY PUT IT ON THE TOP OF THE PHONE!!! What engineer thought that was a good idea?
If the Android port weren't going so well and if weren't for the dumb port placement, I'd be on the Galaxy S series now.

hi all, just to give my input on the subject...
First of all HD2 is the only device that is capable of running both WM and Android.
I got the galaxy for my wife, and am not impressed, here is why:
1. build quality sucks, it feels flimzy, all plastic with no substance.
2. doesn't sink with Samsung software
3. Samsung support sucks.
4. android is not the latest build (apparently it will get upgraded)
5. with original ROM it is slow and chunky.
6. GPS has issues.
7. UI looks like certain fruty devices available in black or white...
I have HD2 with many twins, Energy ROM, and also running Android as a second boot.
Android runs smooth with minor issues: no GPS, BT,and not very loud. Camcorder works fine with third party app. so does flashlight. For those worring about Windows needing a stylus, well how often do you see the original UI? plus what version r u running? HD2 is in my opinion the best of both worlds and the best phone to by. it is definitely for people with some comp knoledge rather than the push the button mentality.

I'm sticking with winmo until WP7 matures a little.
Yes WinMo is approaching the end of its cycle, but since it is, most anything you could think you want is available.
Just installed a PSX emulator and am playing Final Fantasy 7 right now.
I can watch just about any type of video.
More music options than I can count.
I guess for me, the "if it ain't broke don't fix it" mentality applies.

Tough choice as I love playing with these new droid builds coming out, they really are great but after spending the day with a full blown droid phone, god it's fast, seems a lot faster than the Nexus One I had, weird!
No issues with satnav for me and UI suits me fine.
I'll be sad to finally say goodbye to WM, it's been a gadget lovers delight over the years

Eh, with the HD2 in a month or two I think its Android build will have the same performance as the Nexus One and similar phones. Plus, it will be the only 4.3 inch screen phone on T-mobile with Android.
Yeah, the Galaxy still has a better GPU, but I have never played a single 3D game on my HD2 really. Probably because it has no amazing 3D games but...

Definitely Galaxy S! I Have HD2 for 6 months now and I've already flashed the device like 212109863489458 times (lol) and it' s getting annoying i have to flash my device every 2 weeks because of bugs. I don' t think that' s the case with android + The hummingbird processor beats snapdragon. I've seen benchmarks which shows an unreleased new HTC phone (everybody speculating about dual core snapdragon) saying that it' s a super fast new HTC. And guess what... The Galaxy S even beats that one in benchmarks... Don' t get me wrong I love my [email protected], best phone I' ve ever had to this date, but the combination Hummingbird and android (soon 2.2) is a better choice I think.. Hope this helps.

Hello there!!. i am doubt on this question too. I have a hd2 from 8 months ago, and ... really, hd2 ROCKS!. but have some inconvenients like battery life, or wm6.5 and that this will not be upgradable to wm7. Given, android runs really fine but the future of this os on my hd2 makes me doubt a little.
So, what about the galaxy S battery life, gps, photo positioning, screens ...?, it will be possible to flash futures ROMS of android like Android 3.0, i´m ready to say good to WM. But for the moment, i know that on my hd2 it will be possible to flash, maybe, all futures androids roms, whatever they are.

Well I decided to sell the Galaxy S, really nice phone but I much prefer being able to pick and choose the android builds and WM roms to play with, if you like that kind of thing, stay with the HD2.
Now that I have setcpu set up on my android build the battery life is very good.
GPS on the galaxy can be a bit iffy, read the forums and you'll see lots of issues, the camera isn't as good as the HD2 and the lack of flash is a definite issue IMO.
The screen is stunning on the galaxy but the HD2 screen size makes up for this.

Don't be so quick to judge a book by its cover.
Camera flash on the HD2 (and other devices) only work up to a certain distance -- then, the flash becomes useless as it is unable to provide enough light to illuminate the surroundings. The HD2's "night mode" is, imo, horrible; my older, cheaper camera phones had better "night mode" pictures. As seen in the photos in the link, the Galaxy S's "night mode" allows it to capture images at long distances, without flash, and the image is decent.
Its camera -- or more accurately, its camcorder-- actually has a slight advantage over the HD2's. Android OS allows the phone to capture HD videos, whereas WM has limitations that prevent the HD2 from recording in HD. I've seen some videos shot by the Galaxy S, and I have to say I'm very impressed.

That´s ok. But now, the QUESTION. Will be the Galaxy S upgradable to android 3.0?? This could be a GOOD FAVOUR POINT for this device, and if it couldnt be, sucks. Anyone know something about this?? my HD2 is right now open to all this supposed SO roms.

hd2 vs samsung vibrant

I have my hd2 for about 3 months now and i really like it, but this morning on my way to work my phone died. Screen went black while i was browsing the net. I restarted it but phone is stuck on tmobile stick together splash screen. I was still rocking original tmous rom, so I called customer service and they told me that they will ship me a new one and also that i will have another 14 day trial period with it. So basically i can return this phone and pick another one. one of my friends got vibrant yesterday and i spent some time playing with it and phone seems to be pretty nice as well plus it runs android and since my last phone was g1 i am kinda used to it. Thing is i dont really like samsung phones as i had some bad experience with them in the past, so my question is, would You change your hd2 for vibrant if you had the opportunity? if yes please explain why.

I just saw it at the store about 30 minutes ago. I will say this, while being a nice phone, the avatar demo movie playing on it was chopping up and glitching a bunch. Not sure if thats the phone, or the player but video on the HD2 played way smoother and cleaner. Other then that I couldn't tell you anything. And your answer from me would be, HELL NO!! The HD2 just has too much going for it compared to everyother phone. Look at the rate of progress they are deving android for it! Near the speed of light. I could see droid being your stable OS on the HD2 in under 1 month.

The vibrant is a great phone, but not perfect either. I think in this case once again the choice just comes down to whether you get along better with Android or WM.
But, keep in mind that you'll likely never find a WM version ported to the Vibrant, where as the HD2 has several Android builds that are mostly working on it right now, and a fully-functional version should happen before very long.

i use both phones. the hd2, primarily for work and the vibrant as my "daily driver". both phones have some setbacks. with the hd2, my biggest complaint, on the latest stock rom, has been lagging and freezing during and after sending sms and mms. i usually have to soft reset my phone during these cases.
however, i am sure flashing of some custom roms should solve this issue but i have not had the time to do so. overall, i love the build quality of the hd2 and its gorgeous 4.3" display. i'm also running a dual boot of the latest android froyo port on it and it almost runs as smooth as the android os on my vibrant.
my biggest gripes about the vibrant is its overall build quality. it's pretty much plastic all over and very lightweight. there are some creaks during vibration.
while this might be a setback it's also one of the phone's strengths. some times i forget that it's in my pocket. it's very portable/pocketable and slim. bear in mind, it's screen is 4", not that much smaller than the hd2's. also its weight literally feels like a feather vs. the weight of the hd2.
my other complaint about the vibrant is the TouchWiz skinned interface. it looks a lot like the iphone. heck, the overall look of the phone looks like the iphone 3gs. however, i soon got over that that by installing some home theme replacement apps/ui such as Launcher Pro and ADW launder free from the android market. these themed UI apps look just like vanilla froyo roms and actually run smoother then the touchwiz theme.
Overall, the vibrant is seems to run a lot smoother, quicker v. the hd2 in terms of app launching and scrolling, screen transitioning, and gaming. furthermore, texting is great. no lags nor freezes and the included swype keyboard trumps the one provided by the hd2. no lags, delays, etc whatsoever. however, there are some lags and glitches here and there when running a number of apps or when using the android market. just like the hd2 and the winmo OS, there are task killers that you can download from the android market place. and let's not forget the beautiful and vibrant (yes, tmobile got it right with this nickname) the screen is. i literally have the brightness set at 0 and it's still stands out a bit vs. my hd2 set at about 20 pct to save battery. honestly, i've never seen a smartphone reproduce such colors in terms of watching movies like avatar so vividly. i'd say it's almost on par with the beautiful display of the iphone 4.
if you decide to purchase the vibrant, make use of the 14 day return period. make use of the android market and look in to this website, xda and see what the vibrant is capable of. rooting is SUPER easy on this phone and a froyo build should be coming out soon from team cyanogen (i.e. wes garner). The official OTA on android 2.2 will likely be out by the end of September for this phone as well.

I love the HD2. Best phone I've ever had. The G1 was cool when it came out, and I was impressed initally, but it only took a week or so before it started to get "buggy". Once I rooted it, nothing imporved and I was constantly out of touch for hours at a time due to booting, wiping, flashing, etc...
HD2 totally different story. Say what you will about Windows Mobile 6.5, but it is very customizable and powerful, capable of many great feats. Not nearly as proprietary as iPhone or the upcoming WP7. And as of now as far as I know Microsoft is on record as stating they will be supporting and upgrading 6.5 for the next two years at least even though WP7 will be out.
The HD2 is very quick. The stock Opera browser, while not having native flash is very quick to load full media-rich pages. Having Office 2010 preloaded is a big plus for me, also.
I play the Ferrari GT Evolution game all the time, and since I got a class 6 SD Card, there is very little lag or stutter at all, graphics are very imressive. I know the Vibrant has a better screen but I think the HD2's is good enough to where this would not be considered a "deal breaker" (like not having a freakin' flash on your top model phone, I mean, come on, Samsung, is everyone there shooting meth?).
I have not had any problems with MMS, Text, or Facebook or Twitter on my HD2. All run very smoothly. I have 5 email accounts up and synching nicely.
As far as watching movies, if you have to run them side by side to tell the difference, again, I file it in the "not a dealbreaker" category. All I know is I can watch True Blood in H264 just fine on my HD2 and not even use 35% of the battery.
Battery life on the HD2 for me seems to be about a full day, plus a half if not having wifi on all the time.
People complain about the size but I love it. I like having a big, solidly-built smartphone that I know is sitting in my pocket and not going anywhere.
Anyway, I haven't played with the Vibrant yet so I can't do a comparison, but the flash for me is a big one, because I use the camera on my HD2 constantly. But my advice would be not to write off the HD2 just because of everything you hear about it. Give it a shot. It's a great phone.

to be fair, the op was asking about the vibrant. i also have a rooted g1 and i'd have to say the vibrant murders the g1 in every aspect. i have not rooted the vibrant out of the box because of how much internal memory it has (16 gb) and its blazing speed.

To be accurate, they were asking if anyone would trade their HD2 for the Vibrant. I simply wanted to have an opportunity to let the OP know that his HD2 experience may be the exception rather than the norm, and to familiarize himself with how to use the device instead of simply giving up on it.

I decided to stick with hd2. I flashed a custom rom same day i got my replacement and it really improved speed of the phone and everything work as smooth as i expected. On top of that im runing darkstone's froyo now and im loving it.

HI!
Trying to decide which phone to get, narrowed between the optimus 7 and the motorola defy. The motorola has earpiece problems, and the one I was leaning to the optimus 7 has shut off problems. I'm a phone in the pocket kind of guy and don't want problems, how many of you are having no problems vs those that have them? Would you buy this phone again? Any other issues I should be aware of? I mainly want it for a phone 1st, though I would be interested in mp3 comments. All comments appreciated, thanks for your time. Dave

I personally would go for some other WP7 device. The only problem I have with the Optimus 7 is that it randomly shuts down.

Just for the record, I have never seen my optimus 7 randomly shutdown. So it may be an isolated issue.
Edit: I wanted to add that I would choose a WP7 device over just about any Android device 100% of the time.

i love my optimus 7. great phone. and never shuts down randomly. only when batery is 0%.

I have a nook color that I put CM7 on, and while I enjoy it and use it every and have had it for a lot longer than my phone, I find myself trying to do things that I can do on my phone that just don't .... I don't know how to say it other than just doesn't work right.
Even in the browser, I still like the stock IE over the Dolphin HD on my nook.
The only thing I might change in my next phone is to get the Titan, I would like a bigger screen (personal preferance), but the LG has been great so far. Really like the fact that it has gorillia glass and I don't need a screen protector and that it holds together and looks brand new even though I drop it all the darn time.

Never happened to me. My phone rebooted itself some time, but thats gone with mango

optimus 7 is average phone. its heavy, non standard-size (you won't find any cover that fits), those analogic buttons I don't like, and no standard internal-SD.
on the good side it has gorilla glass, 16GB.
I think, its faster than an HTC trophy and the metro interface runs much smoother.
I won't buy a WP7 any more, I only bought it because it was very cheap, 200€ instead of 450€

Yip, never had any problems with mine. I bought 2 for my parents for christmas presents!

I agree that the phone is average, by smartphone spec standards, but like you said its faster than many comparable devices, and WP7 makes it just about faster than any Android device. Heavy - yes. As to the SD storage, swamping cards is not truly supported by WP7. I understand the analog buttons are a personal preference, but I like not having to worry about accidental key touches and swipes taking me out of an application with sensitive capacitive buttons.

I forgot to say that the Optimus 7 speaker has one of the worst speakers I ever faced in a mobile phone...

For the price I paid (£120) I guess I would.
Only real negatives are the visual quality of the screen, camera isn't up to much and speaker is kinda crap.

Windows Phone yes, LG no.

In Italy is sold for 149€... I paid 250 but i have no regrets. The only cons for me is the battery, a little bit under the others wp7.
In a year i have saw only three or four random resets. Not a huge problem if you know the boot time: 20 secs.

16GB memory, very nice physical buttons, with the possiblity that there is a Wolfson inside it (Wolfson has a deal with LG to supply audio codec processors for the Optimus phones, not sure if the Optimus 7 has it). Plenty to like about it.

Personally I would never buy this phone again.
WP7 is good looking OS, but has many disadvantages now. It is very new and does not have many functions as typical smartphone have, like full bluetooth support.
LG phone has nice design, but have also some issues, like battery life time.

Only Windows Mobile, MAMEMO and maybe Symbian have full Bluetooth stacks unfortunately. It seems full Bluetooth never really made it into the modern smartphone OS's. That being said I am sure that the flexibility of Android allows for additions to the stack, but they still don't support all the protocols that smartphones of the past had.

I quite like the LG as it holds its own against many of the v1 WP7 phones, and has better storage and battery life than many. I prefer the real buttons too, and no probably with the screen apart from it being too bright to read in bed. You can get Gel covers for it which make it a nice sturdy phone for taking out and about thats capable of taking a knock or two. And the low 2nd hand price because it isn't shiny-shiny enough for the fashionistas or phone thieves means its great value for money. The Jil Sanders version with a slightly tweaked case (more plastic but less weight, USB flap easier to open, less garish camera surround) is currently being sold off half price at Expansys so continues that value theme.

Just wanted to add in, i'm a long time windows 6/6.1 user, and i'd buy another of these in a heartbeat.
infact I was tempted to buy that Jill Sanders version for my g/f, was on offer for £149 delivered but i forget what site.
I don't get the negative issues, Initially I wasn't too impressed but after 2 weeks i'd never go back to winmo 6.1, I personally dislike andriod, to slow and clumsy feeling for me. iOS just doesn't make sense to me either.
For those who say the camera is bad, its a phone, the outdoor shots i've taken are pretty amazing, the inside not so great, which is true of all digital cameras i've ever used, and the fact its got a flash that can be used like a torch as its not a xeon is a big plus for me.
Compared to a friends HTC Mozart (which cost twice the price) to me the Pro's of the the LG phone, longer battery life, nicer physical size, physical buttons (I know its user preference, but after 3 months his buttons have stopped responding, personally i've always had trouble at some point with touch buttons, but thats me being picky!) 16gb, seriously, do you need more than 16gb on a phone? this was the real seller for me, I have 10gb free space with quite a few apps including the 2gb+ navigon satnav.
Sure you can't upgrade the storage, but compared to most which have 8gb i'd say its pretty fair.
I'm also loving the wifi internet sharing, coming from previous winmo devices i've always found the connection just drops out randomly, but with this stays rock solid for hours. (not internet in work other than phone!)
My biggest issue with the phone is the battery, it seems no matter what features you turn off it seems to last the same with the features turned on, i'm not sure if this is a wp7 issue or a handset issue
