By now, some of us probably have an extra EVO sitting unused on a shelf somewhere in our homes, and that is such a waste for a great little device it was (and still is). I have one that I left untouched for months. After being pestered daily by my kids to let them play games and listen to music on my phone, I thought why don’t I turn the inactive EVO into a mini tablet and let them play with instead.
Aimed with that thought and a search engine, here are what I did.
1. Downloaded a latest Sense ROM (I used MikG 2.60). I tried CM7 but couldn’t get anywhere after removing Phone.apk and Telephony.apk
2. Opened the ROM in WinRAR (you could use your favorite zip archive software)
3. Removed the following APKs from \system\app folder
a. HtcDialer.apk, HtcDialer.odex
b. HtcSprintService.apk, HtcSprintService.odex
c. Phone.apk, Phone.odex
d. TelephonyProvider.apk, TelephonyProvider.odex
e. VoiceDialer.apk, VoiceDialer.odex
4. Copied the modified ROM to sdcard, wiped phone then flashed as usual
That’s it! Wifi worked… Market worked… everything else except the phone functionality worked. My kids are thrilled to have their own device to play games, listen to music, take pictures, etc…
Good stuffs! I'll do same for my little one if I ever let go of mine.

Well if anyone has an extra EVO lying around...I'll take one?
I shattered my screen and I ordered a screen replacement kit. Wish me luck!
I just re-purposed my old Evo into cash. Glad someone else was excited to purchase the old guy and will put him to good use.
This is essentially what we have done with the old Hero. I did not remove the dialer or anything. Just installed CM7 and we keep it in Airplane mode but with Wifi turned on. The kid loves it for playing games.
Lol I repurposed my evo to my original phone, giving my brother my 3d. Something about to 4g keeps calling me back. I think it's the endless tinkering with it fuels my curiosity on how much I can push that phone

True. I thought about that but then I'm sure my kids could turn it back on without knowing it. Didn't want to take any chances of them dialing 911 so I that why I choose to disable the phone functionality completely.
Also, Airplane Mode turned off Wifi as well. They need Wifi to use Pandora and Google Music. Disney-type of songs of course.
You know you just turned your extra Evo into a ipod touch, right? Ha Ha!
I laugh because I did the same thing.
It's actually a hell of a lot nicer than the ipod.

Absolutely no offense here, but if you teach your kids the right way to use 911, it could save yours or their lives someday. Even a de-activated phone can be used to call 911 in case of emergency, however you obviously would have to turn airplane mode back off to use it. It's something to think about, if your kids will always have this evo to use as a "toy", maybe they should know how to use it to call 911 in case something happens. By removing the dialer and other things that you did, they now might be confused if they try to use it in an emergency and cant dial out with it.
Also, Airplane Mode turned off Wifi as well. They need Wifi to use Pandora and Google Music.

Yes, airplane mode will turn wifi off when you activate it. However, once you are in airplane mode, you can toggle wifi back on, and it should stay on until you turn it off.
Great inputs, sitlet! I'm going to re-flash the full, unmodified ROM and try the Airplane Mode ON, Wifi ON to see how it goes. Probably will use CM7 to keep everything a bit cleaner.
Thanks!

I was wondering why you went through the trouble of getting rid of the phone functionality. I didn't even think about the 911 issue. I'm glad you posted that, as now I have some ideas for a different smartphone I have around here. Thanks!
I would have left the phone apk on, you can never have too many ways to dial 911 around the house.

This was my question. I have been looking at ipods for the kid, and can't seem to justify the price. I am thinking of going with the sgs2 and giving the kid my evo as a mp3/camera/ game gadget. I was just curious of battery life without the cell radio.

I'm wondering about the battery life also. I'm thinking about buying a used Evo for my son instead of a Nintendo DS. I think the cost of the game justifies it. Will the phone always be searching for signal? or does Airplane mode take care of that?

If my wife has a my touch 4g can we video chat using this app or is there a different

Yes, you can chat with a MT4G as long as you both use this app.
However, the app runs in the background and drains quite a bit of battery power.
I went from not having to charge my phone overnight to it dying on me halfway through when I installed the app.
It's very useful, so I don't want to remove it... But I don't think I can deal with the battery drain.

Yes, it is very useful, and yes, it does startup in the background and run.
I kill it with each phone reboot (settings, apps, running services, stop) and after each use.
That's too much work, IMO (this isn't the only app that starts up and commences it's batter drain agenda).
Utilizing C2DM and not having the application run in the background would be the obvious best solution, because then it would only start up when you got a Tango Call in (or initiated one) and then shut down until it is told to do so.
This is part of the issue with multi-tasking.
It's not only about running multiple applications concurrently, but when everyone thinks their app needs to run as a service, it doesn't really serve to enhance the usability of the device.
Just curious if anyone had issues with slacker closing it self out after about 30 minutes of play. Pisses me off, because the app won't reopen from the recently used apps list, have to launch it back from the app drawer. It also closes out of the notification bar. I dont think this is normal because my hero would play all day. If others are having the problem, I want to write the dev and see what they have to say about it.

Slacker, once a great app that is now pure garbage. I uninstalled that thing months ago. Would open by itself in the background, ate batteries for lunch, and too many ads.

It almost seems as if Slacker watches for user interaction with the device and after about a half hour it will close if you don't interact w/ your device.
Really gets on my nerves too. It does the same thing for me but I've never paid attention to how soon it will shut down.

Yeah, this seems to be it - if I don't use the device at all, it closes down. Which sucks, I usually lay it on my desk while I roam the server room and listen to music.
It's funny sometimes I don't even realize it if I get busy on a project. But as soon as I do I have to go back and turn it back on. Pisses me off. I think Ill switch back to pandora...they both have their ups and downs. But I thought slacker was good for general background noise where pandora was good if I wanted something specific.

Creat a free account and try it out for a week or just a few days and see if you experience similar problems. Maybe it works 'indefinitely' since you're a paying subscriber.. Seriously though, I was about to pay for premium because I like the caching option for times when I don't have a good signal or whatever.
First off, i know its illegal to text while driving, but sometimes its necessary. so lets leave that as my own business. save the smug comments, please.

would i be able to use tasker? how would the profiling go? location or time based profiles obviously would not work consistantly... im a lazy american, so i would like for all of this to be automatic. Really? I've been running with it all the time for a while now and my battery is just fine. ~20-24 hours if I don't constantly text/surf. (Which unfortunately, I do.)
I have to say voice search does it for me, I'm always impressed at how accurate it is. And it literally is one long button press of the search button away.
What happens when you drive your car? Your GPS would be able to detect it moving at a certain speed.... but I can't think of anything else (nevermind the fact that it wouldn't detect anything out of the norm when you weren't actually in movement). Docking it with the car dock obviously could set that off, but there's nothing else.
Like you said, it is not a big enough hassle for people to bother with it. Long pressing the input window allows you to switch it very quickly, like you pointed out yourself.
Just use the voice type button on your keyboard. It's by the return key. It works fantastically.
Fyi it's not illegal to text and drive in all states either. You can safely text and drive if you concentrate more on driving. People just don't for the most part. That's all I'm saying so I don't feed the trolls

Personally vlingo or the built in speech to text is your best bet, tasker is always an option but in order for that to work well you would have to have gps on at all times. im not sure if its possible but you could use a better home or custom toggle to switch but until samsung gets its act together the car home app is unlikely to work the way you want it.

Mostly by choice. even though i live in the flattest part of Illinois it takes a little too long to connect. usually its time sensitive and i would rather just call for directions. still relevant to thread imo.
Side note: Yes, i've tried root/nonroot app solutions to speed it up, personally i'd rather call if the lock takes ~1min to connect.
My gps locks just fine within a few seconds; I'd say 10 seconds at the most. It's holding the signal that is the problem. And yes I've tried resetting agps data with gps tools and ##gpsclrx# to no avail. Took it back to radio shack, they tried a data profile and factory reset, and said if it doesn't work they will exchange it tomorrow. Of course it was no better. So I'll get to see if another phone is better tomorrow.
Mine works fine except on the military base I work on...then its sporadic lol

After more testing. Mine is working but a little wonky sometimes. I notice after a long wait it may take 30 seconds before locking. My Evo was instant even on cold start. Could they have put a cheaper gps radio to save money or could this just be a simple software fix.
I have serious GPS problems with this phone. When I first bought the Evo Shift 4G I thought it was defective hardware so I returned the phone for a replacement. My second Evo Shift 4G shows the same behavior. I don't know how they could have released the phone considering this major shortcoming. I had a Hero before this and its GPS worked pretty well. The Evo Shift 4G takes forever to get a lock, sometimes several minutes. I will not work for me indoors, even if I am on my porch. It is practically useless and I cannot depend on it at all, this makes many many features and applications I have come to love on Android practically useless. You don't realize how valuable location aware apps are until you can't use them I am debating if I should return the phone again and get a samsung epic, or if I should hope that they release a fix for this issues very soon. I don't know if it is something that could be fixed with an update though -- perhaps it is a hardware issues exclusively. I am very bummed because this phone is pretty fantastic otherwise.

The GPS on the Epic is fairly broken.
I did another test this morning and the gps would just drop signal for 10 minutes at a time. I would have to get out of Google navigation and go back in to get a lock. If this keeps up, I think I will go back to the EVO. I'll give it the 30 days first though. I love the phone otherwise. I am very dependent on gps and that really is a deal breaker. Maybe if this gets some attention it will get on the front page of a big site and HTC will realize its a problem.
I'm on CM7, so no GPS here .
If you are using Google Nav, it will suck.. using the Tel Nav that came with the phone is better . Maybe its also due to Google Nav since it is still in Beta....

I am hoping that any GPS problems will be worked out soon. I am wanting to upgrade two launch month Pres to EVO Shifts, and one of the main problems with our Pres is the GPS. My Pre constantly requires a restart before the Navigation will work correctly. My girlfriend's Pre has never worked well or consistantly.
Agreed. The GPS on this phone is jacked up. I just got back from a trip to California and the GPS goes in and out...WTF! I was driving through the desert with nothing blocking the signal.
It worked again for about 5-10 mins whenever i restarted the nav program then it goes in and out agian.
The EVO was great however, worked in two seconds.
I think I saw some discussion on this but I can't find it. Looking for a rom which has no phone features, so the Evo can be used purely on wifi for media playback, browsing etc. I am planning to use it to make calls via SIP/Google Voice on wifi only, and the primary use will be for media.
If the cell radios are disabled, battery life should go up.

I ordered myself a long HDMI cable for it too. The phone is actually going to be a dedicated Netflix and gaming device for my bedroom TV. Now with an AOSP rom on there I can finally use my bluetooth gamepad.
Any stable GB rom is good for using it for primarily media device with HDMI use. I carry a wifi hotspot device with me so I just run my devices off of that and keep them in airplane mode. I combo Google voice and talkatone for free calls and texting. I've also synced my wiimote to the EVO via Bluetooth so that I can just control it from my couch to play videos and games on my big screen.

Well when you turn on Airplane mode it shuts down all radios (mobile network, wifi, and bluetooth) but then you can turn back on the ones you want (maybe not mobile network since that would totally defeat the purpose of Airplane mode)
I'm looking to use my Evo as a music player (through bluetooth) and offline GPS in my car when I get an Evo LTE in a couple of weeks. What version of Android would be the most efficeint for this? I'm still using 2.3.5 now. Would there be a benefit to going to ICS?
I will try out Ubersonic first and see how that works for me.

Hi I am looking for something similar. Did you have any luck with Ubersonic? How did it work for you?

I just installed Ubersonic, I'll let you know what I think about it after rolling with it for a few days.
It pretty much looks like what I am after so far though.

I ended up taking the plunge with Ubersonic too. I tried Thundershock but found that Ubersonic was smoother and more responsive. Only downside is that I don't have that ability to make emergency calls (I want to keep the phone in my car).
However, other than that, Ubersonic is pretty trim and fast.
