My dad just got a GSII, he's taking it back and ordering a Skyrocket. This is an awesome deal IMO.
Anyone find a place where to get this price for upgrades? Amazon's giving $.01 for new activations, but price goes up to $289 or something for upgrades.

I'm thinking of switching to AT&T since I'm not currently in a contract and I think I'd much rather keep with a gsm carrier since I have a habit of changing phones frequently. Is the Skyrocket pretty much the best device available right now?
The Galaxy S II is currently the top dog in AT&T's line up. The Skyrocket has a bigger screen, but as for hardware spec., the Galaxy S II reigns supreme.

You signed another contract just to get a deal on a phone? Wow, man... I hope you thought that through. Where I live, even if they gave you $100 with your free phone, you'd still be losing a ton of money in the long run.
Just make sure not to cancel your contract before the 2 years is up as Amazon charges and extra fee of you do.

It doesn't use the Samsung exonys processor, other than that better in every way.
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
It's more than just a different CPU. But can you elaborate on your statement? "It's better in every other way" What makes the Skyrocket better than the SGS2?
It has LTE, 4.5' inch screen, Qualcomm instead of exynos in sgs2. Other than this everything else is same I guess. But I would take the speed of exynos processor any day than the crappy qualcoms.

My impulsiveness has me wanting to try a new phone, but the other side is very leery of samsung. I've said this many times before like everyone else. Readng the problems people are running into makes me think twice about it. It really is a damn shame that this nexus wasn't as impressive, hardware wise, than the original nexus. Dumping 500 into a new phone that is basically an epic minus the keyboard, with stock android. Damn I hate that I'm so impulsive!
Yeah I got the email also.

I just switched from sprint to t mobile and got a Nexus. I don't miss my Evo one bit. This phone puts my Evo to shame. In terms of speed, performance, and aesthetics. It feels like a much nicer higher-quality device. If I was still on Sprint I would be getting the Nexus and it would be the easiest decision I ever made in my life.

I currently have a Fascinate, but we're switching to Sprint soon, and even though better devices are coming, I'd love a Nexus S 4G, mostly for the stock experience and updates. My only concern is the dev community. Would it be easy to port ROMs from the Nexus S to the NS4G? If so, it's what I'm getting.

$399 is the two year contract price as it clearly states in your copypasta. (You also get an "instant rebate" of $200, for a total of $199).
The "off-contract" price will almost certainly be $549.

As of now, off contract prices are:
Epic $499.99
EVO $449.99
Shift $399.99
I would guess off contract is $399.99. You have to remember this is a niche phone. There is not going to be a huge pre-sale or line out the door such as the EVO (was) or EVO3D (will be). Only devs and hackers want this phone. The average end user has no idea what AOSP or Gingerbread means lol

The EVO is almost a year old. The Epic is 7 months old. The Nexus S 4G is "new". I'd guess $549.
So I called T-Mobile and got approved for an early upgrade since i've been a customer since 2004.
The only thing is I found out they no longer bill in a 3 month cycle but make you pay upfront for the phone.
I'm looking at the Galaxy S2 and I don't have $300 upfront to pay for the damn thing.

You might as well just say screw T-Mobile and buy one off eBay for $150-$200 more lol.
Thats what i've said..
Only good thing about getting it through T-Mobile is the warranty.
They should retain that billing feature for good customers...I've been with them since 2004.... am I really going to bail on them over a phone? Stupid...
Literally paying 300 is almost 3/4 of my paycheck... I mean yea right... I'm not right. I'll just use my Galaxy S... Thing works fine anyways.
Or you can get one off craigslist for 300 with no contract like I did.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using xda premium
I agree. The payment thing was great for them. It made people MORE likely to jump into a new phone and extend their contract. Pretty stupid business decision on their part.
But they've been going downhill for a while.
I'm thinking that its about time for this business model to die anyway. I hate being tied to a carrier, and I want a phone that actually gets upgrades.
The only thing that made the 2 yr. upgrade worth it was the fact that the phone was automatically cut in half. $600 retail, down to $250. They simply early upgraded me for being a customer since 2004... so cool..
But what I don't have is $300 to spare on a phone... or if I decide I don't want to be tied to a carrier (which doesn't matter because I can't use a T-Mobile phone or Verizon or on ATT 3g band)
I thought it was very convenient to go into the store, have to pay around $80 upfront, then have the remaining balance split up over a 3 month period... so people who don't have excess money to spend that often can go ahead and get an upgrade every so often..
In either case, this has just made me double think, and I will keep my Vibrant probably for another year or two now. Nothing wrong with it, could use better battery life though.
I am going to wait for if and when GS2 will show up for free with an eligible upgrade on Amazon or Wirefly. Get the 1800 mah epic touch battery for the time being if you are concerned about battery life.
So save $100 each month and after 3 months you can pay up front for it? I don't see what the big deal is.

Craigslist has SGSIIs for $300?
You must live in a nice place.
In my area I see them for about $350-500. So yes, they are going for around $300 on craigs.
Any any case, what does the price of this phone have to do with the topix of tmobile no longer billing monthly for phone upgrades?

Back to the OP, I'm annoyed that TMo didn't offer the SGS2 to me for $100. They were running a special on "new customers" only, but wanted to charge me $349 to "upgrade" my line. I've been with them for over 6 years and 5 lines on the account.
Goes to show how they take care of their existing customers. Glad I didn't upgrade my contract as I'm thinking of going to Verizon and getting the Galaxy Nexus as soon as one of my other line's contract is up.

Switch, it's worth it. I just went from 66 kbps on Sprint here in NYC to 2 Mbps down mid-day on Straight Talk (AT&T) on my international Galaxy S III. And it's only $45 a month. It may not be real unlimited, but it's still much much better than Sprint's completely useless data speeds.
Also, off-contract the US ones are $649, so say $750 after tax. May as well go with the international ones from Amazon. If you want a penta-band one though, go with the T-Mobile one. It also has AT&T bands. The AT&T one only does AT&T bands. The cool thing with Straight Talk is if you choose AT&T compatible SIM it works in locked AT&T phones and if you chose T-Mobile compatible SIM it works in T-Mobile locked phones (both work in unlocked phones as well).

taken from slickdeals.net
"T-Mobile Galaxy S II No Contract for $299 @ Walmart
Available at Walmart Wireless locations now:
T-Mobile No-Contract Galaxy S II for $299 with activation of one of the following:
T-Mobile Prepaid Monthly 4G - $30 and up monthly
Walmart Family Mobile Activation ($25 activation kit which includes SIM card)
Details:
Existing Walmart Family Mobile customers can apparently still get the $299 deal. Existing Monthly 4G Customers cannot get the deal, however they can activate the new phone and should be able to call in to transfer their previous account info into the new account.
I'll be answering questions here (also on the page linked below). Walmart does have these, look at the photos on the page. Ask someone competent in the Walmart Connection Center and ask if they have them in stock. They got the update on their computers last week on the deal and how it works. Stores received them between August 8th through the 13th - some earlier.
Source:
http://www.thatsitguys.com/news/t-mobile-galaxy-s-ii-goes-prepaid-at-walmart-349
Adding this to clear up questions
There seems to be a lot of incorrect assumptions on here as well as a lot of misinformation being given. Let me clarify everything. Also, it would be worth reading the info listed in the source.
This deal works ONLY at Walmart stores back in the Connection Center. Stores should have received them and should have the info tags posted next to their Walmart Family Mobile display. There are no additional discounts or rebates available on this. The Galaxy S II is $570 outright, so you are effectively getting this phone for $270 off already.
There are two separate ways to attain the Galaxy S II for $299:
¤ Activate a Walmart Family Mobile account. This will require a $25 activation kit, which includes your WFM SIM card. For more info on that, view the source. Existing customers of WFM should be able to get this deal after confirming their account.
¤ Buy the Prepaid variant - aka, the T-Mobile Monthly 4G Pink Box. This includes the Prepaid SIM card in the box, which they will activate for you. You must get a monthly plan valued at $30 and up.
Not all stores have these phones yet, but that has to do with their ordering system and their competence."

Agree with you there.. Galaxy Nexus is a way better phone (IMO) for only $50 more.. and its unlocked so you are not limited to WFM or T-mobile. You could use StraightTalk if you wanted.. which is what I use..
This offer on the S2 is still a good opportunity, special since its the only Decent phone available for Prepaid customers (WFM is prepaid too)

Also of note is in Canada the same version of the SII (just minus t-mobile branding) is available for $300 with a $100 gift card from Koodo or $150 on their tab

Agree with you there.. Galaxy Nexus is a way better phone (IMO) for only $50 more.. and its unlocked so you are not limited to WFM or T-mobile. You could use StraightTalk if you wanted.. which is what I use..
This offer on the S2 is still a good opportunity, special since its the only Decent phone available for Prepaid customers (WFM is prepaid too)
(hunting a deal on the Galaxy Nexus, need one for the girlfriend )

I went ahead and grabbed one of these for a couple of reasons. I really wanted a risk free way of trying out Tmo $30.00 plan and the Galaxy Nexus is $80.00 more for me in Cali after shipping and tax.
Since these are going for more on the local CL I can try out the service and then break even when I sell it.
It's going to be interesting carrying my Gnex and the S2 around at the same time. Both are pretty good sized phones!

And paid a lot for it.... but very impressed. Can't believe sprint was only offering 100 buy back for the s3. Anyone know how to remove the slighty corny life companion logo on the lock screen?
Forgive noobness, have owned for 5 hours

There is a clear box around the word Life Companion, if you slide it down there is a Lil pen icon. Select that and you can edit it right from the lock screen.

I have no idea why anyone would do the buyback program with Sprint - they completely rip you off on the price. (Not saying that in a flaming way, blaming Sprint for that one)
I just put my S3 with my two cases for it on Craigslist for 320 bucks, sold it in a day, and bought the S4 with the cash. Basically a free trade ahaha. You gotta remember that the S3 is still (I don't about about exactly right now) like 600+ dollars off contract so people buying a phone of Craigslist (usually don't have their upgrade) are down to pay decent money.

Yeah I didn't sell it. I'm keeping it for experimentation lol. I'm going to see how much the s3 processor can endure, might sell it.

Can you really expect Sprint to give a bigger credit for more than what they are selling the phone for with a contract? Only the iphones get more than what the contract price is.

No not at all, the point of my post had nothing to do with that lol, that would be a waste on Sprint's part.
I read his post as saying he had turned it in for 100 and I was saying that's ridiculous how the OP actually sold it for that little and actually participated in that buyback program. But I didn't want it to come off as rude(wasn't trying to be) so I just added that it was Sprint's fault for promoting such a ****ty deal in the first place.
But guess he didn't, so no worries for him

SWEET! Thanks to this post I'm putting my S3 on Craigslist instead of eBay. I put my laptop on Craigslist a couple of months ago and kept getting low-balled ($50-$150), but on eBay it sold or $327... of course the only bad part about eBay is they took like $25 of commission lol. Hopefully Craigslist works out and I can get my S4 sooner than expected, thanks!
