Damn! I was about to post this . Also, don't get confused by the double download.. you gotta go back and install the actual app.
Every time I go to install the Documents 2 Go Free Main App, my Market FC's on me! I can install and/or update any other application, except for the free main app of Documents 2 Go!
ANyone else seeing this issue?
I've tried clearing data & cache for the Market app and rebooting - no help.
Any ideas?
Thanks!
Can someone post it for those of us not in the US ?
And yes I get the FC too - someone on the transformer forums found a fix, I cant remember what it was now - something about updating Doc2Go first or something

Please stop perpetrating the myth that Einstein ever said that quote. At least bother looking it up before you use it all willy nilly like and pretend it's legitimate.

Ok, this has got to be the most off-topic post I've seen... C'mon - really? He can put whatever he wants in his sig!
^lol i know right? seriously "brony" chill out with that. back on topic thanks OP. will grab this later.
Is it the same on the tablet as the phone or is there an "HD" version?
This is just the unlock key. You have to download/install the main app separately. There is only one version of the app (Unlike Quick Office Pro last week, which DID have two versions, both of which were free during the day - Go Amazon!)
Downloaded it - like quick office HD better because it lets me access my dropbox folder through the app instead of needing a second app to automatically sync. Unless there's something I'm missing...
I'll switch when there's a full featured android office suite with spell check... or I when I can use windows live on my TF...
Doesn't come close to being any of use for my needs. It doesn't even show check boxes in my excel sheets.
@Gary13579:
1) I am a university student, majoring in Anthropology, specifically in physical anthropology. I am by no means stupid, and capable of quite in-depth research. While I didn't write a dissertation on the man, I did research the quote before I added it, attributed to Einstein, to my signature.
2) I also happen to have Asperger's Syndrome. Do a little research on the disorder, and you will understand that I do NOTHING willy-nilly. I am very deliberate, obsessively so, ESPECIALLY when citing or quoting a source. I also happen to be a published writer, so plagerism is near the top of my list of unforgivable sins.
3) Did you happen to know Einstein? Spend all your time with the man? Every waking moment, every breath, every word, from birth to death? Yeah, I didn't think so. While I can freely admit that it is absolutely possible that Einstein did not utter the quote in my signature in any form or fashion, I also feel compelled to point out that it is entirely possible that he DID say those words. Bear in mind that most famous quotes from notable historic figures are misreperesented, misattributed, or paraphrased. It's not that serious, man.
4) When your life is so entirely lame and boring that the best use of your time that you are able to find is logging into forums about a piece of technology that Einstein likely couldn't even conceive of in his time (and the man is purported to have quite an imagingation) and get your panties in a bunch being a troll about a quote that someone has in their signature that is commonly attributed to Einstein by historians and scholars, I offer you my pity.
Also, as I can't resist pointing this fact out, even though the mods may very well scold me for it (and my apologies to them if this does indeed break the rules of the forums), that quote is in my signature line especially for people like you.

I'm able to use Windows Live on my TF, at least OneNote and Word. I have to agree with you on Quick Office HD though. I really like it quite a bit, but I know people are rather personal in their taste for apps, so I figured it was worth passing along the heads up. I keep both on my TF, as I prefer working with PowerPoint through D2G, but use QOHD for everything else. You wouldn't happen to know why none of the office programs offer spell check, do you? Is it some issue with how Android implements something, or just one of those things that is hard to code?

Slow. clap. Bravo. That was a well deserved and probably overdue 2-handed beat down. It should be noted that if you do a search for the quote in Google, *EVERY* result in the first 2 pages of results attributes the quote to Albert Einstein. So while it may be possible that AE didn't actually say it, I'd say there is more proof that he DID than proof that he didn't. Jus sayin.

1) Anthropology is completely unrelated to this conversation. I understand that you are trying to make a case for yourself by asserting your profession, but it is unwarrented and appears rather egotistic. If you had done some research, you surely would have come across this conversation http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Talk:Albert_Einstein#Formerly_unsourced.2C_now_in_article (control f, "two things") which has traced the quote back to 1880, while Einstein was only 1 year old. Sure, Einstein may have repeated the phrase, but then we're entering Michael Scott territory. If you aren't a "The Office" fan, this image pretty much sums it up http://i.imgur.com/7WFWs.jpg . Attributing a quote to someone implies that they authored it, and there's no actual physical proof that Einstein did any such thing (in fact, there's no real proof of him ever using the phrase, beyond a single book). Although it's certainly possible that the author wasn't lying, as I'm sure you're well aware, people love sticking silly rumors onto Einstein's name as he was (and still is) such an iconic figure of the 20th century. You are surely aware of such silly rumors as him being dyslexic, which has been disproven time and time again, yet the myth persists.
2) I'm very familiar with Asperger's, as well as most of the spectrum. If you had done your research, you surely would have found what I have posted in #1. That alone should be enough for any Asperger to have enough doubt about the author of the quote to stop misattributing it to him.
3) Irrelevant, as I'm sure you are well aware, the burden of proof lies on the accuser, not the accused. I can claim to have magical powers and ask you to disprove it -- you can't.
4) This just seems like a personal attack on me. Come now, are two logic driven adults not capable of having a civilized debate without resorting to terms such as "troll" and "no life"? I'm not sure what to rebuttal here -- do you want proof of my life?
Lol @ mods scolding you for it. This entire thing is off topic and is my fault, but it takes a lot more than implying I am stupid to get punishment. And you can imply I'm stupid all you wish. I am still a genius, regardless of what silly name calling you decide to partake in.

It should also be noted that if you search Einstein and dyslexia, you get quite literally thousands of websites stating he was dyslexic. As we all know, this is nothing more than a myth. Confirmation bias is a very interesting thing when it comes to the internet and myths. Myths start to become accepted as fact, and they rely on other websites perpetrating the myth in order to back up their claim. You can convince the world that a god exists, and they will believe it, but when it comes down to it there's zero physical proof.

That's pretty interesting. I was reading his post and here are my thoughts as a 3rd party observer:
1) Trying to set professional credence to his words in an idiotic attempt. People can major in any field, but you can't judge a person's intelligence from that decision. Sure, as a physics major, I look down on english majors, but that's mostly because I don't agree with their irresponsible decision. I judge people AFTER I talk to them. (Notice how I drop my degree in an attempt to give some status to myself like that guy did?)
2) Great, what a sob story I'm hearing. As a person whose ancestors have been destroyed by lack of attention to careful details, I always... etc. Goes on. I could come up with any number of back stories to make myself get pity and give reasons for why I am astute and meticulous. However, the only thing that matters is an ability to cite trustworthy sources.
3) Quotes can be attributed to anyone. I also find it funny that an anthropology major is questioning how much we can know about dead people if we didn't live with them.
4) Good example of a chaotic situation. A tablet is a completely determinable item, but it apparently took a bunch of mistakes (other prototypes) before we arrived to this invention. It was similar for a bike. I don't think Zhuangzi himself could have imagined a bicycle.
Anyway, what was this argument about? A quote attributed to a dead guy whose popularity far exceeded that which is attributed to most of his supporting cast who did much of the work? (Not that Einstein wasn't great for his creativity, but to be honest, his work was in innovative thinking, not carrying out the meticulous Asperger like detail work you do.)
Sorry, I've quote the wrong text, but whatever! I ain't an aspie. (I hate all these people vying for guilt and pity, I'm a socially awkward person, but I don't need some soft-pseudo-scientist labeling me.)

Read this link. Read it carefully. It's not just about Google being able to run whatever code they like on your devices, it's about Google DOING it, remotely, without any user intervention/confirmation.
What's next ? Let me throw some wild and far fetched guesses...
* Applanet like apps being killed off on the devices to fight piracy...
* Anything not from the market being wiped out from time to time, for the same reason...
* Users are hunted down and being prosecuted for piracy based on their devices content...
* The system is rigged/updated to block inappropriate content, such as pedophile sites...
* Users are being prosecuted for possessing and/or visiting inappropriate content/providers...
* The "inappropriate" extends to warez sites and regular porn sites, "bad" users are still prosecuted...
* The "inappropriate" extend to the "wrong" political sites, "bad" users are still prosecuted...
* .......
I bet you get the idea. And yea, i know i am taking it too far, but still
PS: Let me add something... the builds we are running on our HD2 are often partially illegal (gaps) etc... hint hint
maybe a little paranoid, ok, well maybe a lot

Oh and bloody clowns.
Just a random outpouring,please continue.
Infx may sound paranoid, and no person of any kind of moral decency would condone anbody using pedophelia porn or any other form of content that causes any kind of harm to anyone. But those are matters for the authorities to deal with, not google. If the internet's morality policies were enforced by a huge internet based company, wouldn't that be considered some kind of a conflict of interests somehow? I mean imagine if Disney were the biggest internet company, we'd never see so much as a single cuss-word or titty. Big companies shouldn't be able to impose their own commercialized morals upon users, the internet will inevitably grow more and more watered down. I don't consider myself a paranoid person, but this type of issue stinks of denial of 1st amendment rights, one step closer to completely government/corporate filtered news-tainment, and corporate control of the masses.
Huggs, i totally agree, thata why i posted this, not because i am actualluly that paranoid (would i still use Internet if i was ?). What i tried to do in my post is to demonstrate a worst case scenario, how would google start with somethimg that should be totally accepted by everyone (fighting pedophily) yet slowly move to fighting things we no longer want it to fight (political opinions).
PS: This little remote control thing is the first step for a corporate giant to become a corporate government, a corporate dictator. And the onlu things corporations care for is money, not their users.
PPS: Just my personal opinion, feel free to disagree.

you really dont have a great deal of options
android, rim, ios & wp7 all have the ability to "spy" on their users to some degree,
mostly its just basic info such as: gps location, installed apps & how often they're used, crash logs, etc
some apps on ios have been caught out sending even more personal data. The point is, whilst i dont disagree fully with your concerns, i do see your post as somewhat hysterical.
There was no suggestion in the article you linked (or any other that ive read) that google is planning any of things you mentioned, so why mention them, as doing so only makes you a part of the current media trend of FUD as samsamuel put it.
this isnt about deny that all companies are in it 1st for the £$€, then customer welfare further down the list, im talking about being realistic. at this moment in time i cannot see google taking the path that you suggested, i also have far more immediate and real life things to focus on.
im all for a good conspiracy theory, fema detention camps springing up all over the usa (REX 84), the western so called "powers" planting the seeds of unrest in africa & the middle east so they can insert more puppets to secure natural resources (be it oil, gold, diamonds...), i could go on, but this isnt the place.
so let bring it back to google, you are in denial if you think cyber crime isnt going on, and with the rise of the smartphones we will see a rise of cyber crims trying to gain access. so i ask again who would you rather have access to your device?
if you still think or say neither, il know for sure you have lost the plot or you have taken my advice & binned your sim card cause thats the only other option you have.
@huggs, normally your post are quite informative & rational, that last post wasnt imho
no one was talking about censorship, the 1 point about google blocking access to child porn is something i would vote for, this has nothing to do with internet policing, you say thats down to the authorities, but they are not all seeing (no yet anyway) hence the use of informants by law enforcement the world wide, n thats all i would support. yes its possible that you give them a small mandate they will take it further but il worry about that IF the signs arise.
ppl who get there kick this way should have no rights, & should be actively hunted by whatever methods are available & taken out of the general population.
P.S.
Man i would love to have such a care free life that i need to start imagining then stressing about what may or may not happen, but i dont, my concerns are here & now, What you are talking about ISNT.
sorry for the lengthy post but your suggestions/posts are a subtle form of propaganda and a 1 line response really wouldn't cut it.
all the best

@kam333, i may be way less paranoid than you may think, mind the fact i've posted this as a VERY far-fetched and unrealistic speculation that only got slim to nil chance of actually happening, but it does demonstrate a possibility of undoubtedly good things becoming a base to slowly advance into nasty control-it-all direction. And, yea, your suggestion about binning the SIM card won't work. I still got WiFi
@dung8604, search the net about why Cyanogen mod no longer includes Google apps.
Well, I'm running a cooked rom without a Google account set up. So I can cross that off of the paranoid list.
I can't say I'm surprised by anything written in the article.

If you had fundamentally changed the game, I think that would be more acceptable in terms of modding but just ripping out the ads and changing the splash screen isn't what I would describe as modding.
Modding is like creating a new level, replacing the graphics, this is definitely more akin to piracy.

If people don't want the ads, they can pay $.99, or they could've just gotten the app while it was free on the amazon appstore.
I'm not sure why you're making this personal, and I don't think you really believe that I misunderstood your post or what modding is.
The problem is, this is exactly the kind of post you would expect to find from a warez forum. A crack to remove ads, and a custom splash screen, and that's it. Just because you call it a mod, doesn't make it so.
Modding is an art form and I highly respect it. You're just not there yet, and you're acting very immature about it. If you make a great game out of this, kudos to you. But in it's current form, what you posted is closer to piracy than modding. Which has nothing to do with something being free or not.
3 posters here have now warned you about it. You might take that as a hint that you should consider thinking it through again. You've also been rude to two of them and thanked the other because you misread his post.
Anyways, I wish you luck in creating a really cool mod eventually -- I really do.
But I don't think it helps anyone for me to continue to reply here, we've said our warnings and the forum moderators will sort the rest.
Also, one last peice of advice, if you're going to put yourself on stage, you should learn to take a bit of criticism without lashing out with personal insults.
Add me to the list that disagrees. Stuff like this is what ruins things for others. Also a determining factor for us getting Netflix they are afraid of what can be changed.

holy crap if u dont like the app then dont post. go troll somewhere else ....
No one is lashing out. I'm simply trying to make you who oppose this realize that you sound ridiculous. And as for Netflix.... that has nothing to do with this. So please if you don't like this, then don't download and don't troll. Can I please have a mod remove their post? I guess they forgot what kind of site there were members of. It this offends you then I guess we should removed ad-free android off the market oh yeah and remove the flashable zips MANY highly respected members post for their roms to block ads. So please. Get off this thread.

Look man
This is my final post about this.... I'm not going to argue I just want to make you understand.
1) I have been a member of this forum since 2008.... so yes, I DO know what this site is, I do know what it's about, and my "view" on this is exactly from an xda-member point of view versus what you state
2) Kudos to you still... to be able to reverse engineer.... but the irony is that what you posted in your reply to me; googling "why is angry birds free" IRONICALLY pretty much states that it's because of the adds on just about any site that you visit from the results.
3) XDA has ALWAYS considered itself to be morally ABOVE warez... what you're posting is border line warez... PERIOD. Rovio has STATED that they've made more money off of ads then they would have ever posting as a paid app. This is why they released seasons, why they released rovio for android, etc... see the pattern? It's because they're making money. It's discouraging for a coder or company to make something for android... the paid apps DO NOT sell as well as for iOS, so they reserve to ads... when money from ads no longer appears, and paid apps don't sell as well... there's no more reason to develop for them for android... then we bit*h about how there aren't enough apps for android..... just try to understand what I'm saying without lashing back. OK?
4) Again, if you're going to post - don't lash out on people that disagree with you, take their criticism and roll with it. Either ignore it or thank them for it.
5) And to the others that say... oh jeez just move on and don't post if you don't like. This isn't exactly the same. Rovio is a company, with legal capabilities, and you don't know how far they're going to go to defend their intellectual property. But seeing as this is the BULK of their business... I'm guessing far. *I KNOW THAT THIS IS AN EXTREMELY OVERBLOWN SCENARIO* But I don't want the risk of having XDA get shut down because of a cease and desist... Also, regardless of how I fee about this, I'm trying to explain to the OP that he may face legal action against him as well if they wish. He's reverse engineering and modifying intellectual property... and I don't want that happening to any developer at all
Anyway, rant over... just take our heeds and warnings OP. I'm not trying to attack you.... in a way I'm trying to protect you AND XDA.
That is all.... but the more this happens *ads being blocked by modders*, the less development you will see for android by people who do not wish to develop just paid apps. If you're going to develop for *ONE* ecosystem.... iOS is the way you're going to go... their ecosystem has more money flow... that's just a fact... and if revenue from ads is nonexistent, well, you know what will happen. Just take a look at what's happening with root and bootloaders in our community. I guarantee you carriers wouldn't care if they weren't losing money!

get off of it dude,,,,,,any mod is a change, i , my self , love the game, but you are wrong about your thinking of the different way,s of changing things, no matter where it is,
the (key west pirate)
and the adds are from (fox)
if it was a paid app, then not to many people would buy it, and hacking is hacking, no matter what it is, i have hacked open just about all the apps, a lot more then just a 1.00 app, it is just a an app, try a lot harder things then that
i love it with no (adds)
the adds are a pain in the ass, cover part of the game in one version of it , not very nice
and programmer that wrote it is getting payed by a company to write the app
do your home work on the money trail, and you find out ,

mr. dreamer..... i think you should not be on this site if u feel that modding or changing things is a crime.. here we ripp appart apps from a device and make it available for all the other device .. we make custom roms here which in fact improves the overall performance of the device ..due to which we dont change the device for a long time , which in turn is not a good thing for the manufacturers...
so if u think what this guy has done .. u should stop using custom roms and also stop tweaking ur device ..cozz if you want to get more out of ur device.. you can buy a more better version of device rather than tweaking it..
this community is all about tweaking and getting more from the existing .. may it be apps or firmware..
people have also tweaked the google maps and navigation to make it free for everyone.. so you were nowhere to be seen there..
there is an app called add free.. which every rom devloper includes in his roms
and i m sure u might be using a lot of these roms.. so u should stop using this forum..
i totally support this guy cozz.. he has just tweaked a free app...
if this thread would be taken down then then the purpose of having such a great forum wouldnt be the same...
these are the poll results for u.

I use Adfree, the ads are gone already. I wonder if these guys bash the creator of that app or even worse, use it themselves. Oh the irony...
But it all depends on who you are and what you have contributed to xda, because the impaler released the same thing for angry birds, I don't remember anyone criticizing him for it.

EXACTLY!!!!!
Very important:
Respect the rules of XDA.. post like you thought about it, not out of rage.
I do not want to promote/help this guy.
There is a fine line between this and simply informing people.
I think the latter is worth the risk.
OP was cleaned up since its getting so much attention now
5/17/11 synopsis:
The Android Community rallied. A lot was accomplished. But, we haven't succeeded.
Make Wednesday even better. Tweet, write articles and submit them to sites, post on facebook, just do something.
Site was/is down... but because he took it down for maintenance. Not his ISP shutting him down.
ARTICLES PUBLISHED FROM OUR EFFORTS (And growing....):
UncutAndroid published it first, they tell it how it is and let users speak their mind.
AndoidSPIN Much respect for them too!
Voice Of Android Found me a new site!
RESULTS?!?!
His site is currently down...
Our developers (some who have not been around in a long time) and some who used to feud are ALL working together
and of course the below work...
Thanks to the community and XDA user andyharney we have ("You are" is directed at akaskriller, obviously):
You are in breach of Apache Software License Version 2 & GNU General Public License Version 2.
You are in breach of your AdSense account by hosting copyrighted material, you have been reported
You have been reported to Gameloft for hosting their pirated/warez apps, they have notified their legal dept.
You have been reported to your web host for hosting & distributing pirated/warez apps.
You have been reported to Paypal for profiteering off pirated/warez apps.

WAIT, WHAT'S GOING DOWN?
Recently in one of my guides, a user who apparently did not understand the intent of the thread, starting going off on me that my thread should be deleted... and started singing the praises of AkaSkriller. I thought this guy was a thing of the past. Nope, he has only gotten bigger.
Most people know this guy is a Fraud... he takes the work of our developers (roms, themes, free/paid apps and posts it on his site... behind a $5 donate wall ( $5/month for ACCESS to others work ).
Read some of the below posts where developers have already posted conversations with this guy.... it's sad panda time here.
Not enough, read the lashing he took trying to "apologize" *fake/lying*
Master (Axura ROM) stated that he spoke with AkaSkriller about removing his ROM and he was told he would simply edit the build.prop as to be a different ROM... as if by editing this, it was somehow no longer Master's work!! Since then, there are just more developers supporting this....
This outraged me. I truly respect ALL of our developers, and this is just ONE example of probably 100's where this guy and his site have taken advantage of those in our community who are NOT familiar.
Sooooo........
I propose we do ANOTHER #NeverAgain Twitter campaign where we send out tweets telling people to not use this guys site... we inform people the $5 "donate" for access to files is absurd... and we try and point people to sites like XDA!
A place where we are truly geared to helping our developers/community
(not to make money off noobs).
Here is his site. I only link to it so you can see just how absurd it is. DO NOT give this guy any of your money.
ACTION:
Send out a tweet about it...
Post on your Facebook about it....
Email or send a tweet to other Android sites and ask them to tweet about it....
Sample Tweet (copy and paste if you like):
Sites requiring a donation for access to others work is wrong. Read this: http://goo.gl/l7vSO
I realize some of you think this is crazy/pointless. But it bothers me to have an element like that in a community I really do love.
And yes, I have a "Donate to Me" button. Only because someone volunteered to give me a donation before I had a link.
I've received MAYBE $30... imagine how much I could make on a site like that (near 600 thanks and I am NOT a developer)!
lets play the "I see $5 this many times" game... Maybe just a "thanks button" would work? Nagh, lets make a whole section.

Edit: I found his real name (David Barkley) and his Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/akamilkweed?sk=wall) if anyone wants to go an evil route, use social engineering, etc to screw with him outside of the internet as revenge.
Good stuff. I may need to edit the title. I don't want to HURT him, more just want to prevent people new to Android/unfamiliar to think what he is doing is acceptable.
Posting on social media its a great tool, inc twitter/facebook/youtube, etc
I have asked popular android blogs to write about it today, here is hoping they care about the community as much as I do.
I'm on board, for no other reason than he charges for people to be able to get to his DL section to get his kanged and stolen roms. That, asking for payment, as per the Apache Open Source Licensing agreement that binds all Android OS builds, is absolutely illegal.
Edit - posted to my facebook, I was emailing with an admin on AndroidSpin yesterday, going to email him now and see if he will get this posted on AndroidSpin
Edit - AndroidSpin admin emailed
Here is some of what he has said to me via email in the past.
"you have put my life and my family life in danger" (How exactly would I have done that..?)
"my post have been change and now ill just really right all the roms u post and make them mine"
..and when I asked him to take the pirated apps off of his site he replied.
"sir thos are all app that are in 4share.com so go bug them ok
your mean"
"dude calm down hater"
I m on board I looked around on his website........... he is just copying other people stuff...........
These type of guys .....they are like weeds in my yard. Always popping up.
Remember all the hurt and problems He will now have are a result of his actions not ours.

He could use some lessons in grammar and syntax as well..........
Youtube account
I posted this message on his Youtube subscription page:
"All this guy does is STEAL other developer's work and put it behind a paywall. Don't believe me? Go to XDA forums and find all these ROMs and support for FREE!!!"
It may get deleted, but if everyone on here does the same, it will warn all the noobs that something is up.
I've reached my Thanks limit.. but truly grateful. I feel with enough social media effort we can really help.
For those not familar, my first #NeverAgain campaign was against Samsung.... shortly after, I received calls from them, they were following me on twitter and VERY soon after Froyo was given to us via kies.
my point? To my surprise, it really did work in my opinion (and others).

He does that on purpose. I've also had email conversations with him in the past when the first round of threads started about him. He pretends to not speak very good English. But just have a listen to his video, he seems to speak pretty good English in fact.
He will pretend to be a nice guy. Months ago during our email conversation, I talked him into making an apology thread here, which he did. I told him no one is trying to hurt him, Devs just want their credit.
This is the best thing we can do, just warn any new commers to not go and get robbed $5 a month for his stolen ROMS.

I hope so, this guy, who blatantly ignores the Licensing laws, seriously gets me out of my ZenDroid, and makes me /rage. I think if we can make this a big enough issue, something may be done by people more powerful than us, like Google who actually releases the software under the Apache Licensing terms. I know thats thinking on a grand scale, but its obvious this guy won't listen to us.

Yes it does and thank you for the catch and noticing this bad behavior so we all could help arresting it.
.....
I just submitted this to UncutAndroid:
I love Android. I love the Community.
Since my G1 days I have slowly evolved from total noob, to someone who helps answer questions daily on XDA, writing instructional guides, and now testing the waters in app development and theming. The reason I have progressed is the kindness of the community. Every themer/developer I have ever contacted has been so incredibly gracious with their time and sharing their talent. I truly respect these people – and you should too.
I say this so bluntly only because it’s that passion that fuels the article.
There are also many bad elements to the Android Community. The most notable in my opinion are the 3rd party paid app sites AND sites like www.akaskriller.com. I want to focus on the latter, but feel the need to point out those 3rd party app sites give you “free” paid apps, but they also give you App Permissions not requested by the original app – they are malicious.
Please do not be a self-inflicted victim over $0.99. You are on this site, you are smarter than that.
Back to my real intent here. For those not familiar, akaskriller is a site that has a nice front – and that is what it is, a front. They appear to be very genuine and caring, they act like they are helping developers, and they act like they want to help the Android noob.
Nothing could be further from the truth. They want money – money for others work.
Sites that offer others work (ROMs & Themes) behind a $5 donate wall (yes, you pay to get access) are wrong people. Not just wrong for those new to Android – those who genuinely need help and do not know better. But more importantly, it is wrong for the developers who work so hard to improve our phones, at no cost to us.
I am no expert on Apache/Licensing but I would have to assume paying/donating $5 for free software is wrong on a larger scale than I know how to address.
Those familiar with the Samsung Vibrant may recall a movement I suggested. It was called “#NeverAgain Samsung.” I proposed a social media blitz where we told Samsung on Twitter, blogs, Facebook and YouTube that we would not continue to buy their products if they would treat the Android Community the way they did – withholding updates and source.
Shortly after the movement started (and it grew FAST), I received calls from Samsung and they were following me on twitter Froyo and source was given to us via Kies. Perhaps due to our combined community efforts.
I am suggesting we have another outcry - an outcry that our community will not tolerate this. Let the community know this is wrong. I will not be formal and say “do this,” but do something.
Tweet about it, post on Facebook… heck, just tell a developer you appreciate them.
Since mentioning the idea of one developer has told me when he requested his ROM be removed from the site, he was told that they would simply change the build.prop so it was a “new ROM.” Taking away the work this developer did and making it their own.
This is wrong. Do something.
I am s15274n on XDA and you can find me on Twitter @CallipH. If you are noob and you want help, ask me and I will tell you if I can help, for free.

Very well said. I would urge you to submit that as an article to AndroidSpin as well. I haven't had the time to type up anything as eloquent as the way you put it.
I put a post about this on the edt site. Helping out in anyway I can. I would blow him up with social network sites, but I don't belong to any.

Ahh, I hit them up on twitter but I just submitted the article to them as well. Good call, they are very good to the Vibrant forums.
^ Thanks for posting on EDT man!!
Thank you all for informing us of this situation. It really makes me mad to see someone take what someone else has worked so hard on, and try and make it there "own". I really appreciate all the hard work our dev's do, and donate and pay for apps.
Have posted on Twitter.
thanks again for the information!

Evo ex DEV “TrevE” Hit With Cease & Desist new update CIQ has thrown in the flag
For a refresher, back in October a user over at the XDA forums came across a major security flaw on HTC devices which allowed for the tracking and recording of every use of your phone through certain app permissions. Since then, HTC released pressers that acknowledged the issue and that they would have fixes. Better yet, they said that no data had been stolen by any users and that HTC’s people were on the case to fix the problem. Unfortunately, nothing ever seems to end on a good note.
After his initial findings, research then led Trevor Eckhart to CarrierIQ. That company, has now issued a cease and desist to the Mr. Eckhart for the research he published on their software. CarrierIQ claims that “TrevE” reproduced copyrighted Training Material and made “false allegations” about their software’s purposes. And this is not just a slight slap on the wrist. CarrierIQ wants Mr. Eckhart to issue a formal announcement that shows that what CarrierIQ is doing is completely normal, and is in no way a vulnerability to users.
It’s almost scary to read these C&D letters as if you are the person it is addressed to. Of course, if Mr. Eckhart does not stop his research and retract all previous posts and articles showing CarrierIQ’s software at work, then there will be legal ramifications. Luckily, there is a good shot at the good guys coming out on top. Echkhart reached out to the EFF (Electronic Frontier Foundation) for legal counsel and they feel that CarrierIQ’s claims are pretty much bologna.
We have now had a chance to review your allegations against our client, and have concluded that they are entirely baseless. Mr. Eckhart used and made available these materials in order to educate consumers and security researchers about the functionality of your software, which he believes raises substantial privacy concerns. Mr. Eckhart’s legitimate and truthful research is sheltered by both the fair use doctrine and the First Amendment.
I have felt that Eckhart’s research was for the greater good of the consumer and was most definitely just a,”Hey, watch out for this type of thing,” then an actual attack on CarrierIQ. I could be wrong, but I feel that the research done was in good heart. What do you all think? Will the first amendment save this guy from an ugly court hearing?

So he finds a big security flaw that exposes every HTC phone and they wanted him not to say anything bull**** HTC
Reminds me of Sony BMG and their distribution of XCP and MediaMax rootkits they distributed on millions CDs in 2005 and wanted everything hush..hush..made excuses and so on.
Just part of the reason they paid a heavy price recently.
I back trev 1000%. These big companies thought they could be dirty and get away with it. I believe they knew what they were doing and did it on purpose thinking that the normal dumb user would never find out about it. So when someone brighter than them figures it out and releases it for the masses to read and see for themselves they get all worried and try to use scare tactics to cover up their illegal activity. If you ask me i believe trev should go to court and expose them for the crooks they r.
We may have to start taking up a legal fee fund for Trevor. Go Trev go!

I agree, I feel his research has been for the greater good and education of
the end users of these products, and not just the HTC users. I assume that
this kind of software is on every smartphone, regardless of manufacturer or
operating system.
I don't even directly blame CarrierIQ for their spyware. I blame the carriers
themselves. They're just providing a service that the carriers all want, and
the carriers are basically bullying the manufacturers into installing this crap
into the devices. I don't think any of the manufacturers would willingly spend
their time and resources to install, configure, test, and debug these types of
applications and services if the carriers didn't 'require' it in the first place.
Not saying that any of the above are really innocent, but, blame should start
at the source. CarrierIQ's business model and product would definitely be
different if the carriers didn't create the demand in the first place.
I'll support TrevE any way I can.
The first amendment is quite limited by other laws that cover it. Imagine a mess of papers on a desk, the desk is the first amendment, which is obvious to anyone that is in the room, but each paper obscures the desk more and more, making it harder to clarify what the desk really looks like.... Sure there is the desk, black and white, but this "desk" is on the WORLD WIDE WEB, which, consequentially can make this a very, very controversial case.. As for CarrierIQ.... that was also found on my old Samsung Epic 4G and there have been roms that disable it since early this year out for it... There was even a huge post explaining what CarrierIQ is... so when I saw it here on the EVO 4G forums, I wasn't surprised. However, this lawsuit does surprise a lot... The "Ex DEV" as you say could come up on top... if he has enough funding, because he is RIGHT to do what he did... but whether its legal or not... thats another question. Just because something is legal, doesn't mean it's right.
looks like CIQ is trying to say there not any harm to our phones bull**** http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ofHr8Lv5cNk&feature=youtube_gdata_player

I downloaded the app "Servicely" and it can disable services and apps to prolong your battery and what not, well i opened it up to take a look and i was going through each apps running services.. Not all mind you as there are a ton but i was scrolling down through OnePlus 6T dashboard app and one of the services was ".mms.SmsHijackerService" .
This of course grabbed my attention. Does anybody know what this is and is a lot more Innocent then what it looks like? I also read something earlier tonight about One plus does steal info behind users backs...not sure if it was a BS article or if out had some truth to it ( sure everything has truth to it) . So after reading that then seeing this i was like WTF. Are my texts being hijacked and sent to them. There was a few other ones with names that at least if they are what i think they are, they hid the name better. I have a screen shot here not sure if i

I am on 9.0.11 , so it doesn't go away in an update ha ha not that i thought it would. Seems shady but also why on earth would they name it something that seems shady....... I am going to try to install this sms reader module i read about, it logs all data & sms that leave your phone. Find out if any leave that A) i didn't write & B) go somewhere i didn't send...hopefully the app can tell me that..... if it turns out not , Do you or anybody know of an app that can do that ? I think that would solve all my paranoia that every app i have is sending out my information.

Hmmm... don't want to start drama as I'm sure you didn't intend to, but I'm one of those "paranoid" or conscious as I prefer.
I'm huge on keeping up with geopolitics and some of us should really research the history of China, and I don't mean reading modern, watered-down history literature. China's CCP is the biggest and most vast "Big Brother" in the world except for intelligence in the US/Europe. Not only that, but they are VERY open about the intrusion of privacy amongst it's own people along with the current controversy on China's LONG history of Intellectual Property theft. Read anything re: China's (state owned and funded) Huawei these days (also, notice Huawei's focus on high quality cameras.. eyes everywhere), I will never own anything they produce and I'm sad to say I may be skeptical of this phone now, sadly. And here's a fun-fact.... I'm a Chinese-American, no joke lol
This is very concerning and I think these questions should continue to be asked higher up. I will definitely research this and watch this thread closely.
Please post any finding on it's nature and update us on if we can remove/block the apk. I will do some testing after work.

Edit: After some initial research, OnePlus is a little more distant than Huawei when it comes to state relations.. but keep in mind that China announced last year a new law that "requires cloud services offered to Chinese citizens be operated by Chinese companies and that the data be stored in China". Why do you think that is....? NEVER EVER EVER trust ANYONE/ANYTHING that says they're from/with the government and that they are there to help you. REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

that's fine, and being "conscious" is always appropriate in dealing with all things internet..
however, it always makes me chuckle how so many folks are super paranoid of their privacy being invaded, yet they spend half their lives on faceschnook, tweeter, Snapchat, "the gram" and on and on, plus, as I am sure you already know that once you have an email account, an internet plan, a cell phone, a credit card, a car payment, what ever, you can pretty much kiss any semblance of personal privacy goodbye..

You are giving alot assumptions (? ) about me when you don't even know me. I don't have half those things you listed and if I did or if anybody did that automatically takes their right to privacy away? I will always be concerned with that and as I do agree you can't stop it all as everything you have is tied to you in some digital public way, it does not mean we should just give up... That's your choice not mine. But let's get back to the original topic... As this is what this site is for. If you want to argue the topics hipocricy and all that good stuff (because I gladly will) we can do that else where.
I never made ONE SINGLE assumption about you, so no pity party for you..
and, you said I "gave up"..where EXACTLY did I say that?
you cant make stuff up to fit your narrative dude, so dont try..
even XDA hides tracking cookies on your devices, so deal with it..
and, please show me where it says we have a "right" to privacy...

I will keep researching as it has peaked my curiosity. By the way I agree with you. As I can't take it as far as not owning anything made in China as I find that impossible I do limit it where ever I can. And Mr. Tinfoil hat isn't entirely wrong in stating if you have email. Etc then your privacy has been invaded, if everybody read and understood the fine print in every app alone they download, I bet they would think twice. Google freaking owns us and everything we create... You give it to them the min you agree and download this or that... It's sad really.
