I was opening my phone up this afternoon, so I had my magnifier on so I could see (my eyes aren't quite what they used to be). I just happened to have a bible app with the red letters and blue Strong's concordance up, and when I looked at it through the magnifier, it had a 3D effect. The red was "higher" than the blue. I called my wife and mother in law over to make sure I wasn't imagining this, and they saw it too. When I took the phone out from under the magnifier, the 3D effect went away (obviously).
I played around with other colors, and it seems like the blues and greens are the furthest "back", and the reds, yellows, and oranges are furthest "forward". White seems to be somewhere in the middle.
I almost feel like bringing the magnifier around with me just too see the 3D stuff, but the glass and round fluorescent bulb together are about 10" in diameter, and a bit hard to stuff in my pocket.
Anyone else see this effect? Is this how the 3D phones work?
That's quite the strange effect, but nope, that's not how 3d phones work. As far as I know they use Parallax barrier technology. here's a quote:
"The LG Optimus 3D (and the Nintendo 3DS for that matter) uses the parallax barrier technology. Parallax might sound scary, but simply put it is the effect of seeing closer objects bigger and more distant ones – smaller. What matters most is the barrier however. It is just what you would imagine – a vertical slit plate on top of the traditional screen that blocks part of the image for each eye. The technology is somewhat limited to smaller screens, but yields good results without the geekines of wearing glasses" (www[dot]phonearena[dot]com/news/3D-How-does-it-work_id16950)
I see this all the time with my glasses. I think there is a slight prism effect where the angle of the different light frequencies (colors) is slightly changed by the lens. I also see it at night when there are bright blue or red neon signs.

I seen a 3d effect last night
Now it could b just my eyes cuz it was 4am and I was up since 7am that morning so I was veryyyyyyyyyyy tired
I was reading a thred on here not sure which one exactly but with black backround and white text the white looked extremely 3d to me like I could swear that I could actually touch it
I was in the dark and it was the only light to my eyes so it could b since the white txt were the only light I seen them popping out since I was tired and focusing on them lol
But I still do believe there is a few 3dness in the epic

It was quite an effect, the difference between the blue and the red was probably about 1/8 inch, and very obvious. I played around a little, and there is a definite difference between the blue & red. Looking at all my app icons was quite impressive.

I used to get that on my old Palm Treo. Probably the angle at which you're looking at the letters. Or it's God.

Does anyone else have a magnifying glass that they could see if it does the same thing? Mine is the one with the arm that can be moved around, round fluorescent tube with the glass in the middle.
BTW, my eyes are 20/15 and 20/10, so I actually see better than average, but when I want to see tiny stuff, that's when I get the magnifier out.

I myself being 30 have seen something to that effect. I believe it has something to do with the way the led's are layed out on the amoled screen. If you ever have an average size multi color led you'll notice that depending on the color of the light coming from the led, it is not always centered, or in the same area for that matter. I believe the same effect happens with the amoled just at a much smaller aspect. I've also noticed it on a scrolling led banner. When red and blue are close to eachother, one looks higher than the other

I noticed today that on the display there's a really really thin green line on the left side of the screen, its hardly noticeable but on white it more noticeable. Is this how the AMOLED displays are or is there something wrong with my Vibrant? I think I had noticed this on a N1 before when I had that. Is anyone else seeing this as well? Thanks in advance.
mine has that too. didn't notice it til you pointed it out. Very, very thin line on the edge of the screen. probably normal.

In conjunction to the post, "blue tint problem," which isn't really a problem but anyway....
I thought it'd be interesting to create a poll to see where everyone's at with their Vibrants.
Please participate in the poll, it'll be very interesting to see...
So if you're on the blue side or yellow side, obviously submit yours accordingly, however, for neutral that's for those who have calibrated monitors that can get true comparisons to determine if it's neutral.
There's no need to lie here LOL..it's just for fun so the more accurate it is the better. Don't just click neutral if you don't really know for sure. Try comparing your phone first with other Vibrants to be sure.
Here we go!
It's slight blue, but related to viewing angle and screen brightness. Viewing straight on, it's pretty neutral.

I know what you mean. Could the SAMOLED screen perhaps slightly change in its color tone as it warms up?
When I fired up the two Vibrants I have that was turned on for the first time and compared it to my other two which has been in use, the two never been used phones screen looked identical in its tone/shade.
So perhaps over time it does change as it, "breaks in?"
Does anyone know if this blue tint will get better with time? Mine seems to be the same, wondering if I should exchange my phone.
Well, mine is more cyan, though I can understand people calling it blue and it's driving me crazy. Even with brightness all the way up, there is no real white. This issue will likely cause me to return my Vibrant - along with the cheap build quality - as my Nexus screen looks much better and neutral in comparison. Even my wife noticed it immediately though she also has a Nexus.
Neutral, I've compared with monitors and other Vibrants from my T-Mobile store.

When compared to mine my wife's had a very strong blue tint to it. Since I ordered ours over the phone I called Tmobile. They overnighted me a replacement without any hassle, I'd give them a call and see what they will do for you.
posted this in the other "blue tint" thread too
"...since the OLED material used to produce blue light degrades significantly more rapidly than the materials that produce other colors, blue light output will decrease relative to the other colors of light...In order to delay the problem, manufacturers bias the colour balance towards blue so that the display initially has an artificially blue tint, leading to complaints of artificial-looking, over-saturated colors..."

It matters to some people more than others. If it doesn't bother you then great. It's not really fair to criticize people who are bothered by it--one should have a reasonable expectation for color accuracy of their display, especially for a device so touted as being a multimedia powerhouse.

You know, some people here say every Super Amoled has a blue tint. I have to disagree. I've been comparing my vibrant side by side to other vibrants, and the screens vary from phone to phone. Samsung deffinately has some manufacturing inconsistences. Side by side to other Vibrants, my screen has a very visible dark grayish blue tint. Other vibrants have a slight blue/green tint. While other vibrants i've compared to have gorgeus warm whites. 1 vibrant had a very dingy yellow look to all the whites. So this is not in our imagination, the screens vary a lot on these phones.
My cousin just got the vibrant this morning, she had not seen mine. She saw mine this morning and says "why is your screen blue?" Put mine side by side next to hers, and hers has nice warm bright whites. All of our brightness settings were identical.
I'll be exchanging shortly when I have time.

So, does your replacement still show the blue screen tint?
I picked this phone mainly for the keyboard but also for the vibrant screen. However I am liking it less and less as I use it and wanted to be sure it's standard.
My main issue is the color shift. 90 percent of the time you are viewing inaccurate colors due to the shift in colors at practically any angle. This is compounded by the high oversaturation of every color to begin with. Yes, the screen is vibrant with suprisingly deep blacks, but it seems to have some major issues to me.
Is my experience normal here? Not trying to bash just a bit disapointed.
a panel like the ones we have really deserves an ISF or Avia grade settings menu... I agree they are oversaturated, but not like TV in a store bad.... have you compared yours to another?? Also, I noticed the oversaturation seems to be tied to the brightness control, if you crank it way down, you can see much more color distinction... maybe 20-30%? reminds me of badass CRT projectors, too bright for their own good, but the room to play is good. As far as viewing angle, ummm... mine seems pretty constant, but I havent actually watched a decent quality video. I need to break out a 'digital copy' from one of my BD's and see how it looks with better material. Anyone know if those digi copies can do 720p??? Never tried it, just had nightmares of win media player or even worse itunes style BS just to play a video. At least you dont have the backlight vs. brightness vs. contrast issue like on LCD... Thats a pain in the ass...
ill try to figure out a way to get my avia dvd on my Epic, and use the films to check the colors... any suggestions would be great, not so good with video conversion... video.ts to mpeg4? something???
I have not had a chance to compare to other epics. I do agree, backing down the brightness helps offset the saturation. The color shift when off center is always there, getting used to it but bugs me just like plasma phosphore trails (wouldn't trade for another screen but...annoying).
Wow seems I'm lucky. All my colors are vibrant but I wouldn't say oversaturated is the word. If its oversaturation you wouldn't be able to tell deeper details on objects because the color would blind you. I have no motion blur and my viewing angle only distorts at stupid angles I would never use the phone in. Surprisingly my only complaint is everyone's bliss. There's isn't enough brightness or there's too much contrast. I've downloaded a few 720p movie trailers. Specifically serenity. The blacks are so deep the crush depths of shadow and detail you should be able to see. Someone should work out a video setting changing... thing. I'm a major HD head and I've calibrated my lcds numerous times. My girlfriends epic has a yellow hue to it. I remember the first vibrants had a horrid blue tint. It varies. Happy I got lucky with mine. Personally I wish I could blow My epics screen to 40 inches at 1080p.... you hear me Sammy? I hate You but if you made samoled TVs I would love you. Lol.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
You guys mean raising the brightness. Not dropping it BTW. That would have the opposite effect and then you'd lose even more detail. Dl a 720p video to your PC and phone and look for differences in dark areas.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
I don't get any color shift until around 170 degrees. Are you talking about the trippy 3D effect you get with red and blue (especially text) on very dark backgrounds? I've always understood that to be an artifact of the different handling of subpixels.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
I have calibrated a few displays with meters, it's deffinetily oversaturation.
The color shift happens at very slight angles. For example, I'm typing and the "white" background of this forum changes blueish when I wobble my sceen a few degrees. if I wobble it back and forth it looks like a disco light lol. Sounds like this might not be normal...

Yeh man from the sounds of it, at least according to my experience, it's not normal. I've never noticed ANY type of color, contrast, or sharpness deficiency. Quite simply, its the best display I've ever handled on a phone. Like some others, I recommend the lowest brightness setting when you can get away with it, if anything to simply reduce eye strain. The ONLY time I use max brightness is if the sun is directly hitting my screen.
For what its worth, there is a voodoo color fix. I don't think its been fully implemented into the epic, but from what I can tell, the implentations out there get the job done for those who have color problems (such as the infamous bluish blacks). I don't think you can do it yourself, but some ROMs have them baked in. The first one that comes to mind is BakedSnack. (PS: you'll have to go to bakedsnackshack.com to install he got banned from xda)
Sent from my baked and emotionless SPH-D700
I went to Sprint to compare and yes, my phone had significantly worse color shift. My new one (and the instore model) push slightly red off-center, but it's not near as dramatic. Obviously no display is perfect and I would much rather have a slight red hue at off angles than have it wash out like my GF's EVO.

Since our Epics have Super AMOLED screen being organic in nature I know certian lasers will mess up the screen. The blue one being the worst but what about the red ones like a store's scanner?
Here is a news article about Starbuck's idea of paying coffee with your phone:
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2011/06/26/BU9J1K0BND.DTL
Will it mess up our phone's screen?
Darkk
No it will not. you'd need like a week of nonstop laser being directed at the screen. Besides, the Sun is far more powerful.
If they are going to have a barcode reader it will most likely be a camera and not a lazer...I dont think lazers can even read off a screen...your screen emits light...you cant pick that up with a red lazer...

Actually, you kinda are being a ****, and saying that you aren't doesn't magically negate that fact. Also, the black on our screens is NOT a complete absence of light - turn your phone off (shut down, not screen lock) in a completely dark room to see just how much light comes from the screen (you can try loading an all-black image file as well). And I don't want to get all physics on you, but the screen would refract the laser, which may or may not cause problems. But any scratch on the screen would interfere, and Starbucks can't predict where or how people will scratch their phones, or what type of screen protector they might use, so that method would be too unreliable to work with the general public
Sorry to word it like a ****, I couldn't resist the irony

There is an app called Key Ring. I can put all of those little key chain barcodes on my phone. They use the red laser to scan my card from my phone all of the time

Yeah, I tend to agree with this. Whether a ball is thrown at you or bounced off a wall at you, it's still a ball coming at your head.

This made me lol.
Speaking of which...does anyone else see a guy with his hands up in the air like he's celebrating when you see 'lol' typed?
Once you see it, you can't erase it

Just for the point of clarity, an AMOLED screen does indeed use NO light to represent black. AMOLED displays do not use a backlight so black is "rendered" by simply not turning on any color for the pixel.

Wow. Way to troll my post. I'm sorry but that was completely unnecessary.
Indeed the glass and scratches can present refraction problems, but that is why it must be done nearly face on, and why barcodes are so tall, because physical scratches on a barcode can have the same consequence of a failure to read.
Also...I never argued it was perfect. In fact, I agree that the glass alone presents an issue in reliability.
But I never mentioned the glass, because that was not the point I was making. If you read my post, and use some basic intuition, you'll see that I was merely pointing out that it is incorrect to think that light emitting from my screen is different than light reflecting off your bar code. He had, in effect, argued the opposite previously.
And you really mistook the voice of my post. My preamble was cautionary because I didn't want to sound like a, well, ****. And my conclusion was simply reaffirming that. If you reread my post with a more hesitant voice you'll understand how I wanted it to sound.
Then again, it's not like we're talking face-to-face. I can't really blame you for misinterpreting like that, because automatically placing an insulting voice in there would be your problem, not mine.

Starbucks uses laser scanners and while I do not use their app myself, I have seen people where I go try to use their iPhone apps and it takes them forever to scan (if it even scans at all) I just chuckle and say to myself "dumb ass iPhone" LOL

LOL.... Plus one for that joke!
Reading through the posts some interesting points. However, this isn't about scanner NOT being able to read the bar codes on our Epic screens. It's about the possible damage caused by a narrow beam of light enegry for any length of time.
I know regular LCD screens aren't affected by this but AMOLED is sensitive to UV light such as the sun.
Here is something I saw on Wiki:
"UV sensitivity: OLED displays can be damaged by prolonged exposure to UV light. The most pronounced example of this can be seen with a near UV laser (such as a Bluray pointer) and can damage the display almost instantly with more than 20 mW leading to dim or dead spots where the beam is focused. This is usually avoided by installing a UV blocking filter over the panel and this can easily be seen as a clear plastic layer on the glass. Removal of this filter can lead to severe damage and an unusable display after only a few months of room light exposure."
I have to wonder just how strong can the UV fliter on our phones protect the display? So far my normal usage on the phone the display looks fine. Then again I made sure it wasn't left in the sun too long, maybe like a few seconds.

Then how do you explain the noticable glow to the screen for about 30 seconds while the phone is shutting down? Seems like it would be completely dark if there was an absence of light, but there is clearly SOME light

Since this subforum is so dead, I figured I'd make some small talk...
Am I the only one who loves their notification LED? I was very disappointed to see the gray demo units at Best Buy actually have a pinstripe pattern under the glass that noticeably obscures/dulls the LED, and the pattern is even applied over the touchkeys, so they have a weird, wavy look to them. A foolish decision by Samsung, IMO.

Good to see you over here in the Note 4 area! Can't wait to see what you come up with.
I haven't actually seen the note 4 in person yet but i'll have my hands on one in a couple days. Are you talking about the same type of pattern under the glass of the note 2 and its touchkeys?
Yes that's the way it is on my Note 4 :/

Funny you should mention that - I just noticed it with my Note 4 about 30 minutes ago :$
Just got my note 4 and see the same thing. At least for the soft key buttons i dont mind it because i always keep them off

Same pattern on mine. Didn't notice it on the white one set up at best buy. Not a fan of the obscurity. Stoked to see you picked one up too ffolkes!

I dont know if its design or corner cutting. I dont like it, it looks cheap. Even the notification light has it. Luckly its only these items.
I don't have mine yet so I don't know. But you're saying this dulls the notification light? maybe Samsung did this so people complain less about their notification light colors when their phone is charging/charged in the middle of the night in a dark room

Well if they did it for any reason on purpose it is stupid. I usually don't mind software related mishaps with LED because apps and kernel devs usually give us a ton of options to workaround it. But this is the way they designed the phone from a manufacturing standpoint. Blah.

Black one has the stripes but my wife's white one doesnt.
I like the pinstripe and keeps it from looking plain. I always turn off the bottom lights, i know the buttons are there, so that's not an issue.

I like the pinstripe on the notification light. I like the dulling effect. I on the other hand hate the stripes on the lower buttons. It gives it an appearance that the lighted buttons are flawed or pixels are burnt out.

I don't like the dimmed LED. I use Light Flow, maybe my favorite program on Android. I rely on LED notifications almost every minute of every day. I'm missing the LED on the Nexus 5.
I don't have that problem on my white Sprint Note 4 at all. Not on the buttons or the notification light. I'm really glad because I saw that pinstriped look on the buttons on some YouTube videos and think it looks awful.

White spots on aluminum bezel
Anyone else have 4 white squares on their aluminum bezel on the top and bottom? There's 2 near the glass and 2 near the back on the top and bottom, no idea what they are or what they're for.

Yes, they're gaps to allow signal to get through the metal frame to the antenna.

I don't like the pinstripes; period. Last three plus years, the plain black bezel matched to the dark super Amoled native screen gave the black Galaxy a certain distinction that other OEMs with LCD couldn't match with their lighter looking native screen. Not appreciating this look; not so bad under low light but that wasn't the reaction Samsung hoped for. Thumbs down; face Palm. Not liking either of the browsers included either. Why no auto fit? Samsung's response is that natively, auto-fit exists; reset your settings. Nope. Second response: you can manually adjust the screen with pinch to zoom/minimize. Otherwise, I'm very pleased with this phone and look forward to development in this forum.

stared at both black and white side by side at best buy the other day for a bit, the white one definitely has the pin stripe look to it, its just a lot less noticeable. The only would offer to let me pre-order a black device so..guess ill look forward to stripes whenever they come in...

This is my opinion on the 8 total white (possible 8x ir led) squares on the bezel.

It is for vr. To be used with a Xbox-one live camera for positional/tilt head movement in conjuction with a PC.
As soon as I saw these 8 squares I had a 99.9% confidence that note4 is vr ready! As I have been balls deep in oculus news!
The Exynos has 20-30% stronger gpu that never overheats, so it never throttles.
