For about a month now I've been very interested in rooting my R2D2 Droid 2. I think I know how I'm going to do it, by using this method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=764950 however, I am unsure if it would work considering that I'm using Gingerbread 2.3.3. Another question I have is when I flash a custom ROM to my phone, will it replace the R2D2 animation on the startup of the phone that I've come to know, love, and hate? Also, any advice as to I should add to my phone after rooting would also be greatly appreciated, especially apps, Custom ROMS, and anything you guys can think of.

Rooting is pretty simple. If you are on the OTA GB update then you will want to use the Droid 3 One Click root. The instructions I used are here:

As for ROMs I would definitely try a few out. I am currently running Rev's CM7 build. I uses the GB kernel unlike the official CM7 nighties. Once you are rooted download ROM Toolbox and you will find it in there. I would also highly recommend Boot Manager. This app lets you install different ROMs to your SD card. Great for trying out new ROMs without messing up your current installation. I am running CM7 on my phone with Apex and MIUI ICS in two slots on Boot Manager.
Just be careful, there are some ROMS that run on the Froyo kernel and others that run on the GB kernel. If you flash the wrong one you may end of having to SBF back to stock, reroot, etc. Not hard but it is a pain.

If you are already rooted, first I recommend install Koush's bootstrap recovery. This allows you to backup/restore your phone. A warning with this if you are new: Don't bounce back and forth between ROM's that are made for different android versions. For example, if you are on 2.2, don't try to apply a ROM for 2.1 as it will brick your phone due to a difference in the bootloader.
After you have installed Koush's bootstrap recovery, IMMEDIATELY make a backup. Then archive this off to your computer for safe keeping. This will be your saving grace if your phone gets messed up a little, and you want to go back to how it was as of right now.
Once you have that installed, you can install ROM manager, as this usually has the most recent releases (for the general public). I recommend that you do some searching on the forums here under Droid X themes and Droid X development and take a look at the threads for the different ROMs/Themes so you can get a feel for what they look like. Often reading through the posts also will help you get a feel, as people will usually provide their feedback.
A note if you are not familiar with flashing Themes/ROMs. This can be dangerous if you don't follow the instructions for each specific theme or ROM.
Sorry if this reply has seemed daunting by any means. I just have run into a few bumps myself as when I started messing around, I didn't know what I needed backups of...

As for the different lock screens... I would look into Widgetlocker. It allows you to create shortcuts on your lock screen and use it a little more than the default lock screen from android.
How do you install updates to roms? I want to install gummyjar 1.9 but then there is also an 1.9.1 update. I know how to flash the rom but am not sure about the update. Is it just the same through clockwork, install from sd?

Usually you want to refer to the original post for the ROM and download the update from there. They will usually have steps to install the update.
Hello.
I just got this phone, and it is UNLOCKED and stock 2.1 on it.
I would like to update to the official 2.2 and keep the unlocked, can someone point me to the right direction and tell me how that will be done?
I heard the 2.2 is not out officially, but it is leaked, so that leaked version is the full 2.2 stock or something missing?
I heard something about rooting, flashing, but I am not sure what that means as I just got this phone.
Any help appreciated.

root the phone 1st then download rom manager then pick a rom eugene's , sombionix, or master are all good read up on them and then pick one
down load it on to your computer then load into the internal sd card then reboot in to recovery or through clockwork (rom manager) and load it up.. If you can't follow read up on the sticky's in this forum it explains way better.........

Just like oka1 said, you need to root your device first. Then get rom manager from the market and install clockworkmod recovery through it. When your done with that download any rom you want and put it on your Internal Memory (Phone Storage) on the root of it. Then flash through Clockworkmod. Hope its enough. ;D

for the rom, go to the development section... There is a sticky called the bible. It has everything.
I personally would flash nero v3 (not the beta 3). Most on here agree it's amazing.
Also, Vibrant's are REALLY hard to brick... Worst case you can use odin to get back to stock 2.1. Thid is also covered in my signature.
Now, with all that said... Samsung promised froyo by year end. You may want to wait a few days (I'd still take nero over an ota, just giving you all the information. They may not deliver)

I would just leave it factory cause I see this ending in a soft brick and you freaking otu thinking you ruined your phone when you didnt
Learn how to use Odin FIRST, then learn how to root, then learn how to flash, all of this is covered somewhere in this forum.....search a little and you'll be flashing in no time.

The newest and greatest is Nero 3 by team whiskey, its a custom 2.2, but with a gingerbread (2.3) feel and look. They have been at it for a a while and this is a wonderful rom. Check out my thread in this (vibrant general) forum for links and all the tips you need just ask.

I just bought a used Motorola Atrix for a great price and was looking at some of the ways to root the device and everything I have seen makes me very nervous to try anything at the moment.
I have rooted several Nexus One and Nexus S phones and never had any issues but I have been reading that the bootloader and firmware on the Atrix is nothing like any of the devices I have done in the past.
I would love to root and flash a nice custom stable ROM because after being spoiled using CM7, the stock ROM is not going to cut it. Anyone know of a good root method I could use without the fear of bricking this lovely device? Or should I just wait for a better stable process to come down the pike? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

So first your going to have to be on 1.26 to get a root. If you've already updated to 1.57 (the OTA update) then you need to flash back to 1.26. Instructions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=991072
Then you can root, retain that root, update to 1.57 (OTA Update), and get your root back. Instructions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1016060
Then after you are done updating and getting your root back, you can install CWM (this is what the current roms are using to install), much better than adb. Instructions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1019143
Then you can either use GladAtrix Rom or Gingerblur (this is what I'm currently running). Both of these will deodex your system, theme your atrix, and give you the option to install various mods/hacks. Check the dev forum to see which one you think you would rather have.

I am not overly interested in installing cm7, although I did have a great experience with it on my t-mobile HD2 before the screen decided to stop working for the 2nd time. I actually did enjoy using the stock 2.3.4 build on the mt4g but would like to have more power over my phone (such as changing the hosts files to get rid of ads, remove bloatware apps I'm not interested in myself, etc).
All threads I have read more or less say once you downgrade, root and install clockwork recovery to install a rom of your choice, well I would like that rom to be the stock 2.3.4 build. I want to flash a custom ROM onto my DX, but I'm pretty new to the game. I've rooted, and have installed ROM Manager, and Titanium backup, etc, but am a bit gun-shy about going the custom ROM route, mostly due to inexperience.
I see that CMx and Liberty are the popular ROMs for DX, but I'm not sure which is the better one to go with. It seems that CMx is feature-packed, but has battery issues. Is this true? Is there a stock Android ROM for DX out there?
Also, it seems like in some cases, like with CMx, that you have to downgrade to an earlier firmware version first. Is this still the case with DX, and is it common for flashing any DX custom ROM?

Rom flashing is a completely safe and reversible process. Before you begin flashing roms though, familiarize yourself with the SBFing process.
Cm7 doesn't necessarily have battery issues, it just doesn't get as much batter life as roms such as Vortex and Liberty. Cm7 is probably as close to AOSP as you will want to get.
You DO NOT have to downgrade for Cm7. You can, but it is not recommended unless you want to run the official nightlies (which aren't as good as the unofficial nightlies).
When you begin your foray in to rom flashing remember to always use Droid 2 Bootstrapper and never use Droid X Bootstrapper.

Whoops, sorry just reread the earlier comment about avoiding the DX bootstrap. Never mind...
So, I installed Liberty 3.0, and have been very happy. More stable, faster, longer battery life. Wish I did this months ago. Went from hating my DX on a daily basis to loving it again. It's like a new phone.
The only problem now is that Verizon's pushing out their latest update, and I don't want it. Last thing I want to see is Blur on my phone again. Is there a way to disable this update?
Don't know if Liberty take OTA verizon update, would think it would be disabled. But on stock ROM freeze updater in titanium would prevent the OTA. I just did it last week as I didn't want the latest OTA reminder continuously popping up until I know how it panned out.
