Hello.
I just got this phone, and it is UNLOCKED and stock 2.1 on it.
I would like to update to the official 2.2 and keep the unlocked, can someone point me to the right direction and tell me how that will be done?
I heard the 2.2 is not out officially, but it is leaked, so that leaked version is the full 2.2 stock or something missing?
I heard something about rooting, flashing, but I am not sure what that means as I just got this phone.
Any help appreciated.

root the phone 1st then download rom manager then pick a rom eugene's , sombionix, or master are all good read up on them and then pick one
down load it on to your computer then load into the internal sd card then reboot in to recovery or through clockwork (rom manager) and load it up.. If you can't follow read up on the sticky's in this forum it explains way better.........

Just like oka1 said, you need to root your device first. Then get rom manager from the market and install clockworkmod recovery through it. When your done with that download any rom you want and put it on your Internal Memory (Phone Storage) on the root of it. Then flash through Clockworkmod. Hope its enough. ;D

for the rom, go to the development section... There is a sticky called the bible. It has everything.
I personally would flash nero v3 (not the beta 3). Most on here agree it's amazing.
Also, Vibrant's are REALLY hard to brick... Worst case you can use odin to get back to stock 2.1. Thid is also covered in my signature.
Now, with all that said... Samsung promised froyo by year end. You may want to wait a few days (I'd still take nero over an ota, just giving you all the information. They may not deliver)

I would just leave it factory cause I see this ending in a soft brick and you freaking otu thinking you ruined your phone when you didnt
Learn how to use Odin FIRST, then learn how to root, then learn how to flash, all of this is covered somewhere in this forum.....search a little and you'll be flashing in no time.

The newest and greatest is Nero 3 by team whiskey, its a custom 2.2, but with a gingerbread (2.3) feel and look. They have been at it for a a while and this is a wonderful rom. Check out my thread in this (vibrant general) forum for links and all the tips you need just ask.

Yes, I know. Why do I want to unroot? Well, the AT&T Nexus One is stuck on 2.1 update 1 and the baseband of the phone is unlocked.
How can I return to bone stock so that I receive all OTA updates. I'm good with what google pushes out and really don't want to fool with homebaked updates.

Your bootloader has been unlocked, not baseband. So follow the guide for unlocked bootloader. Use FRG83G ROM straight from HTC.

How so? I'm not really certain I am good with the method in the FAQ. I'm not familiar with adb and fastboot. In fact, I have no idea how to do these methods.
I am googling and reading as much as I can, but it's a bit intimidating. Any video walkthrough or idiot proof document that shows exactly what to type, etc?
Sorry, I'm just not as into this as most here (but I'm very eager to learn).

Try and follow these instructions, I think it may be the easiest way for a beginner. It doesnt unlock boot loader but it roots your phone and gets 2.3 on it. Good luck

The phone I have already has an unlocked boot loader (there is an "unlocked" lock image below the nexus image upon reboot).
I believe returning to stock is as easy as downloading a factory N1 image, re-naming it to update.zip (or is it passimg.zip?) and running it from the boot loader...right?
I'm actually afraid to do this for fear of bricking this thing. All I want to do is go to a stock version of Android from the current 2.1-update1 Build EPE54B rom that came with this N1 so I can OTA up to the current 2.2.2 (or whatever) official google version is out. I'd like to go OTA from here on out, which the phone will not do now (stuck on 2.1 and saying "your software is up to date").
Is it as easy as what I suggested or am I a mega-noob?

Since you are rooted and nervous about bricking your phone you can do this.
Flash a custom recovery if there is not one already on the phone via rom manager. Then in rom manager back up your rom (nandroid) . There is even a stock rom in rom manager that you can download and install all in rom manager. That will put the default recovery back as well. The phone will then the OTA's to the latest one.
Or you can just flash any other rom etc. It is really hard to actually brick the phone.

The boot loader is definitely unlocked though and it's stuck on 2.1.
I will figure out the one-click root and go from there. Is that the best advice?

I would go that route if I was you. It is very quick and simple and noob friendly. You could also use the guides the other posters put up to learn some things as well.
Not sure why your phone is "stuck" at 2.1 in the first place. But yeah rooting/rom manager should do the trick quickly and easy.
Turns out I was able to install superuser, so it's rooted. Not sure why Rom manager complained about it not being rooted.
This is a pain in the ass so far. I will just try to flash to a ~light~ 2.3 ROM. Don't want a bunch of battery draining stuff. Recommendations?
Also, I still want to go to bone stock so I can get google OTAs. Oh well. Maybe I'll figure it out one day.

The 2.3 ROMs aren't really "ready" yet, and I don't know if I would really recommend them to a new user. Very buggy. If you can get ROM Manager to work (which should be as easy as installing it from the Market if you have root), then go to "Download ROM" and find your way to CyanogenMod 6.1.1. It will ask you if you want to install gapps as well, and you should select yes.
Once a phone has been unlocked and had custom roms installed on it, there's no way to ever go back to completely stock with OTA updates unfortunately. Thanks. Well, I'm a total idiot. My passion.zip was passion.zip.zip. Nonetheless, the FAQ .zip original image file was "older than the currently installed version."
I'm done. I'm just going to play in the rooted 2.3 world. Currently downloading CyanogenMod's latest nightly for passion.
So, I am curious. Does this file I'm downloading update the radio and everything else? I'm certain the firmware versions for the radio, etc, are outdated.

EDIT: On second thought, is there a large reason not to go with a nightly? The latest stable version is two months old...I want clean and fast with minimal battery drain, etc.
You can always go back to stock and get the OTAs from Google. Only thing you can't do is relock the bootloader. ALWAYS can do it.

The only reason not to go with the nightly build is stability. CM7 isn't ready for general use yet, and there are a lot of problems still. Last time I used it the phone app was almost completely unusable and would lock up whenever someone called. It doesn't hurt to try it out though. You can always flash something else if it's not stable enough for you.

Nope, this isn't true. Once the signed boot loader is replaced, there's no more OTA's. You can get the notification that an update is available, but they wont install. Once the clockwork or ra_recovery are installed, OTAs will never work again. There is currently NO way to go back to 100% stock on a Nexus One.

its not defective and at this point its just a matter of time until you fix it.
If you still want to be stock, ignore below and follow the links to restoring the stock rom above.
a) do you have a custom recovery installed? (i.e a nice navigable menu) if not flash one from a terminal/shell (on your desktop) in fastboot mode (power+trackball to start the phone, choose fastboot)
b)since you dont have much to lose, wipe everything after rebooting into recovery mode.
c)flash any ROM that works with your phone. (the LCD nexus ones need a different version I think)
When you install a stock rom it overwrites the custom recovery everytime it boots. It always does this. The unlocked boot loader is irrelevant the OTA's.
He or anybody else can flash a stock rom and get the ota.

I just bought a used Motorola Atrix for a great price and was looking at some of the ways to root the device and everything I have seen makes me very nervous to try anything at the moment.
I have rooted several Nexus One and Nexus S phones and never had any issues but I have been reading that the bootloader and firmware on the Atrix is nothing like any of the devices I have done in the past.
I would love to root and flash a nice custom stable ROM because after being spoiled using CM7, the stock ROM is not going to cut it. Anyone know of a good root method I could use without the fear of bricking this lovely device? Or should I just wait for a better stable process to come down the pike? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

So first your going to have to be on 1.26 to get a root. If you've already updated to 1.57 (the OTA update) then you need to flash back to 1.26. Instructions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=991072
Then you can root, retain that root, update to 1.57 (OTA Update), and get your root back. Instructions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1016060
Then after you are done updating and getting your root back, you can install CWM (this is what the current roms are using to install), much better than adb. Instructions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1019143
Then you can either use GladAtrix Rom or Gingerblur (this is what I'm currently running). Both of these will deodex your system, theme your atrix, and give you the option to install various mods/hacks. Check the dev forum to see which one you think you would rather have.

I know it seems like a lot, but if you read and follow the directions, it's pretty fool proof, despite all the noob questions and problems to the contrary. If you have any questions or problems, just ask.

It's been agonizing waiting for an easy and effective root since the 2.3.4 update and I'm now considering following one of the numerous methods that can be found around the forums, specifically, the downgrade/root/upgrade method.
My concern is that the majority of the methods described all end with using a custom rom such as Virtuous, Cyanogenmod, etc--- but I don't want a custom rom. I want exactly what Rom the T-Mobile G2 is supposed to have, but with Root. I also want my system to update as it normally would.
Am I able to downgrade, root, and then upgrade back to exactly what I'm using right now? Aka, still receive android updates, etc, etc?

I would argue your G2 is "supposed to have" Cyanogen, but to each their own.
You will need to follow this guide to downgrade if you want to root. And yes, you can flash a pre-rooted pure stock 2.3 ROM. Just search the Development forum and you'll find it. Your phone, however, should not notify you about updates after this - and you don't want it to. If you were to flash an OTA update you would lose root.
The wiki is also very helpful if you still have questions.
If you really want to see what your phone can do try out some custom ROMs after you root. Thousands of HTC Vision users can't be wrong.
Glite is a good alternative too, with the stock theme and launcher, it looks and acts exactly like stock, plus it's lighter and faster
Follow the wiki for root. You'll abandon what you have now, but you can flash a pre-rooted stock ROM after you're rooted. Chances are you'll wanna dabble in non stock ROMs eventually lol. I remember when I first rooted I though I'd never flash a custom ROM lol... ROMs like cm7 are similar to stock but perform better, have more features, and better battery life.

Yeah, I've known about roms for a long while now but I just never wanted to give up the stock rom because I never wanted to be put in a situation where my markets and/or apps would give me problems, although I do realize how silly the concern is.
I guess I should just bite the bullet and try CM7 out. Worst case scenario I can always go back to boring old stock. And who knows, I might be converted after all.

Yes, exactly, you can always flash right back if it doesn't suit you. And I, too, was hesitant to flash a custom ROM the first week or so after rooting. But once I did my only regret was that I waited at all.
Alright so I downgraded to v2.2 and established root, etc etc.
I toyed with a couple roms, namely CM7 and I'm incredibly bummed because after researching a bit more on it, I realize that it has issues running google apps such as swype, navigate, market, etc. I use google apps daily for both pleasure and work. It's sort of essential that I have a solid google-app working rom.
I'm debating on upgrading to a rooted gingerbread 2.3.4 however I wanted some advice from the vets who have more experience than I so I can save myself some hard-ache.
I'm looking at G-Lite presently, and think I might give it a try, I hope it has solid use of google apps.
I've been running cyanogen since the G1. I recently tried out the stock gingerbread, and it was OK, but I missed a lot of features that are built into the CM rom, such as the status bar power widget.
One thing I noticed about the stock gingerbread is that is was velvety smooth, which isn't surprising since it is built with the actual hardware drivers. If you are used to the froyo stock rom, then you probably won't miss the extra features.
There are a few rooted stock gingerbread roms in the dev section- Paul O'brien, spookievision, and rr5678 all released stock(-ish) versions.
If you want it more stock than that, you'll have to root it yourself. I'm not sure if rooted stock roms will be able to apply the update successfully. You will probably receive it, but it might break root. Maybe it will work if you keep the stock recovery.

People tell me that the versatility and diversity of whistles in CM is inviting but the stability issues make me concerned. For me, reliability will always trump bells&whistles.

I'm using G-Lite 1.0.3 right now and I must say I'm enjoying the simplicity of it and the fact that it is a bare-bone system. I like how it was obviously built with Froyo/Gingerbread in mind. It produced Swype problems but I easily fixed it by using the Swype-Installer.apk found on the Swype Website

That's really the beauty of a rooted android device - you can have exactly what you want on *your* device.

I really want to root and use HTC sense UI 3.0 my G2. Every thread about downgrading to froyo was for S-ON GB not S-OFF like I have (i assume). It's S-OFF since the first time i bought it.
Could you all help me to choose what method should i use to downgrading my g2, root it, and use custom rom with HTC sense UI.

Hi All, I just got my Nexus one off ebay and it appears its not rooted as i do not see the padlock icon and i also cannot run the nexus torch.
What im looking to do is revert back to the stock software and than do all the OTA updates myself.
Can someone help me with this ? Im not looking to root though.

If you don't see the padlock it means the bootloader is still locked. If you don't have the SuperUser app then you are more than likely NOT rooted. Sounds like a stock phone if you ask me. Why do you want to roll back to Froyo then update? Sounds like you are already where you want to be. It sounds like a case of reaching around your ass to scratch your elbow. Heh. If you try to OTA update it and it says you are up to date, I would suggest leaving it alone or just root it! Good luck!

Why? Is there a problem with what is currently installed? If it's working fine, then I would expect downgrading to a previous version and applying the updates would just get you back to where you are now. I'm not criticizing, just trying to understand what you're looking to achieve
If you mean stock as in "original" that isn't Froyo either. The Nexus One originally came with Eclair (2.1). If you don't have root, I'm not sure if you can downgrade or how safe it would be. I've seen mixed results with downgrading. The only way to do a complete flash would be with an unlocked bootloader or root + custom recovery.
If you don't want to root or unlock the bootloader, why not just do a full wipe and use the version you have on it? You could also root it temporarily to restore to an unrooted Eclair or Froyo, then apply the updates.

Well the phone reboots often for no reason so i thought if i started from the factory installed software and go forward it would help.
How hard is it to root to install enclar and than go forward ? Unless someone has another idea for the reboot issue ?
Install the latest stock ROM in PASSIMG format (complete ROM, all the partitions). No need to go back to Eclair or Froyo.
Prepare for the possibility of it not helping at all, and your phone HW being faulty. If you have ADB set up - you can run "adb bugreport" after the crash, and look for "ARM9 has crashed" line in the log dump that comes. If you'll see them - no amount of ROM switching will help.
Not to sound pedantic, but you seem a little confused (OP). Why don't you start by reading the FAQs regarding rooting and unlocking the bootloader, and understanding the ROM installation processes.
Couple of fundamentals to get you started:
1. The padlock (or absence of) is no indication of whether you are rooted or not. It merely indicates whether your 'bootloader' is unlocked or not, which is a completely separate concept from rooting.
2. Easiest method of seeing whether you are rooted is to see if you have the 'SuperUser' app in your app drawer.
If your objective is to install a stock/default ROM, search for a 'PASSIMG' for the latest available firmware for your device. Search these forums or Google it. The procedure is fairly straightforward and only involves putting the file on your SD card - and will restore your phone to a stock usable state.
If you're interested in custom ROMs, the fastest way to get started is to use SuperOneClick to root (Google, please). Then go to the market and download ROM Manager and just follow the instructions!
