Att use, bouncing between 3g and h+ all the time - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 General

Is it normal or I have to get the right settings? I notice it on 3g all the time but then it jumps to h+ when ever I use data.

Hspa+ text

So, I just text from t-mo telling me that they're new network had made my phone faster, but so far I haven't noticed a difference. Anyone else get a text out notice some speed increases?

Download the SpeedTest.net app, do a couple tests and post your speeds here. I work for Tmo and we have HSPA+ at the call center (very congested cell site), and I have gotten up to almost 5Mbps download speeds there. On regular 3G I get only like 1Mbps max.
1.46/d & 1.29/u best out of three, with full signal and 3G. I ran it earlier, right after I got the text, and it wasn't nearly that fast-
Stupid question- will the data indicator say something other than 3G when on an hspa+ network?

"H" if you're on the new radio
Ok, so the 'H' just means hspa. I think whether or not it says 'H' or '3G' depends on the rom you happen to be using.

Yes, you are correct. I figure that T-Mobile made the hspa icon 3g was so that people didn't get confused between gprs, edge, and 3g. Some roms will have editted the icon so that it will show an h. It's something along those line.

Where are these networks located? I barely get 3G as is, phone constantly changing from G to E and really pissing me off.
The new radio alone will not make it show the H. I didn't get the H until I flashed CM6, now I always see it. I don't have HSPA+ around my home, but at the Tmo call center, I have seen up to 4Mbps download, and it's pretty congested there.

But yeah can't wait to have it around my house, as my Verizon DSL sucks and I'd love to have a nice backup connection.

I work and live about 10 & 20 miles north of boston, respectively. The fastest speed I've seen was 2.4mbps, and I've only seen that once. Usually I get around .5/1.2mbps with full signal.

Stay on hspa?

Hey this has been bugging me all day.
My network switches from 3G to H every few seconds almost even if I not moving. Is there a way to just pick it to one?

Don't blame me if you screw something up but goto your phone app and dial *#*#4636#*#* and begin to tinker.

Sounds like Fast Dormancy. It switches back and forth to save battery when there is no data use.
Suggest you do some reading on it!

It will change to H when using data, otherwise it will remain on 3G when idle. Mine also switches between the two regularly. I wouldn't worry about it.

HSPA to HSPA+ problems

Hey all, I know that switching from 3g to HSPA+ on the T-Mobile network Is intentional, but almost all the time between my pushing a button to send data and the device switching to HSPA+ there is usually a 20 to 30 second delay which isn't acceptable. Sometimes it doesn't even switch or when it switches no data is transmitted, which sucks if you are trying to use sip calling (VoIP), it ends up in a dropped call or about a minute of waiting before the call is actually answered. Does anyone have any solution for this or experience the same thing?
(Even now I can't post this because it won't switch... with full signal bars!)

My nexus 4 sometime does this, with full bar and the network showing HSPA+, it will take a minute or so to load a page. Even when speedtest show over 10Mb. Other time it usually work fine with the 3-5 second delay while it switch to HSPA+. I test my brother tmobile s3 side by side with my and his webpage load faster then my while my network switch from 3g to HSPA+.

I'm guessing none cares enough to answer. Or we're alone in our own world.

Fast dormancy is something that T-Mobile uses as a form of network management and also as a "battery saver". This is what your experiencing when your phone switches to UMTS (3G) when the data connection goes dormant.

I've had the delayed switch intermittently from every phone I've had on T-Mobile. It will come and go.
I chalk it up to a network issue and not a device issue.

Thanks for your answers guys, I understand it is how T-Mobile has configured their network. My only gripe is that sometimes it takes about a whole minute to switch. Thanks again.

T-Mobile service question

Seems my phone drops to 3g but when it says its 3g no data transfers when it says h or h+ it transfers data
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
You probably just have ****e service. Restart your phone and see if that clears out your problems.
When not in use, the radio switches from HSPA to UMTS in order to save power. All UMTS/HSPA devices do this, but stock Android devices like the Nexus 4 actually show this transition as a change from H(+) to 3G, instead of hiding it like most handsets which simply continue displaying 4G on the status bar. H(+) will show back up when you start using data and the radio ramps back up from UMTS to HSPA/HSPA+ in order to deliver your data more quickly.
This is standard behavior, unless you're actually having trouble using data, which is a whole different issue.
Seems like it stays on 3g when I need it sometimes. Is there a tweak to quicken then switch. Sometime t takes like ten seconds to swticj

This service is horrible. I hate to leave this phone but this sucks. T-Mobile must have no roaming agreements set up

Are you on their prepaid? if so, then you don't have the roaming agreements hence the bad coverage.

Question about 4g

Simple question. Sometimes my phone says 4G and it seems at that time the data speeds are slow and sometimes it says 4G LTE and the speeds are normal. So my question is what are the differences? The reason why I ask is because I don't move around and the signal keeps changing between the two both with full signals.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
I believe when it says 4g it is referring to hspa, which is technically 4g but not as fast as LTE. It all depends which kind of carrier your ROM is for. On the international ROM '4g' refers to LTE and on my Fido GS4 it just says LTE. I might not have clearly answered your question but I hope I shed some light to it. Try doing speed tests to gauge which one is which.

Lte is faster as you already know. 4g is att way disquising hspa+. Which is like 3g. I think you live in an area with weak lte coverage is why its switching back and forth.
Ah that explains it. I did not know 4G meant 3g on att but it makes sense now. I just think I need a new sim card.
