Yesterday I was very much surprised when I downloaded all mp4 HD video from my SGS2 to the TAb and neither file couldn't be played on stock player. After hours of rush in the Internet I tryied almost all other known players but the bext I achieved was slow motion video in dice player. What is your expereience? Did anybody run smoothly HD videos on his device?
720p is fine. 1080p is not. You can grab bsplayer free from the market, very nice player.
I believe the only hardware accelerated codec is H264 so any video not in that format would have issues with 1080p. I personally played a 720p Xvid, over the network, using MX Player last night. DICE had speed problems with it.
In my experience DICE is better for MKV and MX is better for AVI etc.

If there is any app that would do it if the hardware was up to spec it would be Dice Player. It eats all my 720p MKV's for breakfast but still can't do 1080p.
Hi guys im on ismobile rom everything great but hd vid playback sucks. Im using dice for playback but still its not like it should be. Anyone any thoughts?

This tablet sucks hard on .mkv high quality videos . If you want to play them smoothly , you can convert to WMV using MSMPEG4V2 codec .
MX Player is a very good player.
Subject's been beaten to death in other threads. Basically boils down to specific supported codec settings when you encode your rips.
If you're trying to watch 1080p or 720p BD rips that you're pulling off of random torrents you'll undoubtedly have issues. If you're encoding yourself though you should be able to adjust your encoding settings to get smooth 720p playback.
My rips are done in Handbrake to MP4 format, I start with the Regular-High Profile and then turn off B-Frames, CABAC, 8x8 Transform and Weighted P-Frames. I then set my audio to a single AAC track at 160 bitrate and turn off all video filters. My video quality I set to ABR with a target average of about 3000 to 3500. My picture setting I set to 1280 width. Do this once and save it as a preset . . done . . Resulting rips play flawlessly in Dice and look STUNNING on the GT 10.1's screen.
I've even combined my MP4's into MKV files to add subtitles without issues.
You can thank nVidia for not including NEON in the Tegra 2's Cortex A9 to save money.

My problem is I got it MAINLY for watching videos, and I can't seem to get it to play 720p videos smoothly.
Tried playing 720p directly, tried re-encoding from 1080p and 720p using Xilisoft Video Converter (chose Motorola Xoom H.264 profile), tried re-encoding from 1080p and 720p using Handbrake and recommended user-presets.xml containing Xoom video settings etc.
It does play 1280x720p with hardware decoding, but, depending on the video, it stutters for an instant now and then.
Comparing to playing a file on the PC, or laptop, or DVD player, or blu-ray player, or my WD HD Live media player, it's NOT as smooth, i.e. I do notice those "stops" and they drive me nuts.
Should I wait for ICS or change some settings or simply sell the tablet?

This has been addressed a few times already but I will try to give an answer. Yes the Xoom can play 720p videos. The most important factors being what format and which player you use. I personally use Dice player which plays all my 720p videos with no conversion needed however if you must convert, DVD Catalyst does a stellar job. I have played 720p movies files in .mkv and .avi format on Dice player ranging in size from 2GB to 4GB with no issue. The only setting change I made in Dice was to have the stock player handle .mp4. I have used the stock player to play 720p .mp4 files with no issue. Use the search function to find the threads explaining how others are doing it.

Try Dice Player. What video size/format are you trying to play?

You could also experiment with the ICS alpha build--it's very stable on nightly version 17--and plays videos very well. Read the Team Eos nightly thread in development for more information.
Yes, I thought I wasn't going to sell until at least seeing how it worked on the final ICS for Xoom...not sure I'm willing to play around with the nightlies though, but thanks for pointing that out
BSPlayer, the older version (check the thread in the XOOM App section for the APKs), works great too. Especially since it doesn't try to sell you the program every few seconds while watching videos.
For best results with any player, make sure to use baseline profile when x264 encoding. No B-Frames or weighted P-frames.
What's really funny I encoded The Guard in 1080p to 720p, due to wider screen the end result (keeping the ratio) is like 1280 by 514 or so.

Guess what? perfectly smooth playing, using MX Video Player 1.5a.
No trial, free, just ad based, but I have Adfree for Android running, so I don't see any ads whatsoever.
I'm using rooted official 2.3 rom. when I play mkv 720p movies , video plays at lower frame rate than usual and problem in audio video sync. I use mx player and hardware decoder is not available for mkv. can please anyone suggest me some tips to play 720p smoothly. and is there hardware decoding available in new adreno driver in dzo ics for mkv?

720p on nearly 480p device?
Professionals can correct me, there are few reasons why it won't play in full speed:
1) .mkv files need usually the same space as .mp4, but it has better quality. BUT needs more power to play. That is the disadvantage of matroska. So if there is too high bitrate on the video, it lags/wents off sync. Overclocking might help.
2) 720p??! Really? This phone CAN record 720p video with good fps, but only in good light conditions. You can even watch them (because they are so low-bitrate), but if you have like 720p movie, it lags due to high bitrate it needs to look clear. BUT why would you want to play 1280x720 (16:9 ) resolution video in 800x480 (16:10) resolution screen? Shapes will look odd... I would prefer 480p (854x480).
3) I'm guessing that your movie is on your memorycard? If your memorycard is too slow, can that be the reason for lagging too. This can be fixed with faster memorycard.
4) Switch to Moboplayer. I don't have any experience of mxplayer, but Moboplayer can use hardware decoding for that.
