Fresh from SE, proper confirmation!
"We can today confirm that we plan to upgrade the entire 2011 Xperia™ portfolio* to the next version of Android known as Android 4.0 or Ice Cream Sandwich. We are working on merging our current Xperia™ experience with the new features in Android 4.0. More detailed information regarding this upgrade, timing and global availability will be communicated in due course here on the blog."
Good news indeed, let's just hope they leave the sleek, modern ICS UI relatively untouched. It'd be a shame to drop the UI back into a Gingerbread-era style.
great news but,i think SE will keep the xperia style not pure ICS style.

Better just hope we get root then. It would be a shame, the Xperia style is just so bog-standard and unremarkable. I don't see how any group of UI engineers could possibly look at the ICS styles and decide that their faux-3D-everywhere, 90's looking UI is the better option.
But then I don't work for Sony, so what do I know?

But still, I bet it'll look very different than how it looks like right now. It's more "SE adapts to ICS" than "ICS adapts to SE", if you get what I mean.

It's an interesting point because if you look at their modifications they made to Honeycomb on the Sony Tablets, it's more just a sprinkling of SE. If they keep the mods tasteful like that, I think they'll be on to a winner.

Hope it doesn't create issues for my rooted, bootloader-unlocked 4.0.1.A.0.283, because I had recently read about someone having had his rooted phone go into a boot loop after updating through PC Companion. Still, I would hate to lose root, so I hope somebody comes up with a rooted ICS image that can be directly flashed to the phone.

Hope with the new Ice Cream Sandwich, there's a new XPERIA experience, because the current XPERIA UI is plain, old boring.

I don't think the XPERIA UI is boring. For me, right behind the new ICS UI, is the most beutiful UI for android I ever seen.
oh my god that's so damn good news !! :O
as said earlier, I don't really understand why people say things like : " the XPERIA UI is boring, plain etc.. " if you don't like the styles of sony, why did you buy an xperia phone first away, and second .. you could have seen how the xperia ui(TS UI) looks like before purchasing the phone imo. so stop complaining about things like that and just be happy that we're all getting ICS on our arcs !

I'm not saying it's a bad UI. I think it's FAR better than stock Gingerbread. HOWEVER, I think most people will agree the ICS UI is much sleeker and generally nicer than the Gingerbread SE interface. I find it hard to imagine Sony being able to significantly improve the ICS interface, but we'll see

Yes, waiting for that. A completely new SE's style for ICS .
I tried several launcher: Launcher Pro, Go, Launcher 7, but finally I return to "Sony Ericsson Home" and stick with it.
But still hope that SE will let us customize the UI more. the current theme function is quite useless.
And also waiting for an upgrade on Sound quality of Music player, add support flac/ape too, want to use the default music player too

Why then have SE made all the apps dark greys and blacks? The stock ICS UI is largely white and light blue. Look at the stock apps. There is FAR more light styling in stock ICS than there is in any of the SE custom apps.
Edit: Also, an LCD displaying black uses no more power than white. I have no idea where you got that from.

Hey guys, is it possible to have the new Sony Ericsson Live With Walkman stock ROM for the X8? The new Timescape looks quite nice and the Walkman app has changed tremendously and you can also change the theme now like the thread bubble colour and background colour in the Messaging app. I hope that it can be done really soon
What I can promise is that I'll port Xperia Active apps for SE look and feel to FXP CM7 ROM for max stability. Porting will start tomorrow, when I get Xperia Active system.sin.
Something like this is already available for X10, Arc and Play - CM7 ROM with SE stock apps by Achtojan - CM7 speed with the beautiful SE 2.3 style.
Also, if someone has got Live with Walkman firmware, please PM me.
That looks interesting

Ics home launcher on the nexus looks terrible I think. I prefer gingerbread's. I hope Sony ericsson change it a bit and keep the hardware/sensitive buttons. Anyone agree or disagree? They haven't even made alot of changes. They have added a screen shot feature which the arc has anyway, same with panorama. Agree or disagree?

But most of the changes are under the hood, beyond the UI. For example, hardware acceleration. They've done more than just make a new launcher.

I disagree completely...
The framework and ui is completely different.
The OS will finally have hardware acceleration, meaning it will be way smoother.
The multitasking pane is completely new, with you sliding a pane off of the screen to close a running app.

IMO Noobs might not see the changes but there are a lot and they are huge...
while froyo to gingerbread was just a step, this is a major leap.

It's so screens can now be larger without making the phone gigantic.
Personally I think it's genius.
If you don't like the ui just flash a custom launcher, that's the joy of Android.
I think it's going to be the biggest leap in Android progression by far.

ICS is the first big step required to unify android and present it in a more scalable format.
A format to build upon the future and bring android devices closer to each other.
Hardware helps but the software helps it flow and keep it as one.
Allot of android games are being developed in Unity for example.. it scalability makes it so powerful as in future games & apps will only require a single build to support all devices.
I kinda agree with samuel109 about the buttons, I've installed Button savior and don't use my X10's hardware buttons but I really think those software buttons feels ugly & out of place, Also sometimes when touchscreen freezes it's good to have those hardware buttons hehe
And I'm also not so sure about bringing android device close to each other, The result could be boredom
Well people you can't have it either way...
Either you want a nice unified experience that will assure quality and functionality on every Android device you use, or you want the current system where it's basically a toss up.
I think this is going to be the best move for Android personally.
I'm excited to see what comes next.
Getting rid of the buttons will lead to less parts that can break and eventually thinner/smaller phones.
However, when it comes to the buttons on Android, I think google needed to commit.
This seems like a half-assed solution.
As far as buttonless solutions go, WebOS and Meego offer much cleaner responses. I installed cyanogenmod on my touchpad and I can't tell you how many times I swipe up to minimize or launch the apptray - just to be disappointed. Software buttons just hide the reliance of buttons in a higher tech way.
However, I think this is only an option for phones that won't offer physical buttons and nice to see it built into the OS. There will still be phones with those buttons.
Saw this on the Samsung Mobile USA Facebook page. The screenshots don't resemble the current version of TouchWiz, is this our first look at ICS on the GS2? If so, I'm not impressed...
The footer does say screen images simulated, so I'm not sure.
Whats your opinion on this?

ICS are blue themed, this is green!
Agreed - could be true that it is touchwiz 5 though to stop anymore lawsuits but def. not ICS.
all thing that we saw from ICS 4 was pics from galaxy nexus.May be the ICS for SGS 2 can be with some changes..
Both screenshots on the GS2 are rather different, so I'm not sure what it is...
Looks more like a custom launcher to me. Not very Samsung-ish or Google-ish
there are 2 different SGSII models, one with 4.2 inch and the other with 4.5 inch display.
each is designed for a different operator in us so the operator might asked for a different customization of the os.
the weather widgets are the same...

I don't think that the look of the upcoming ICS Rom will have a lot of similarities with the Google ICS look.
They'll stay on TouchWiz and it will look like TouchWiz.
Samsung created TouchWiz to give the Phone a specific look and feel and to be different/better to their competitors. They'll not jump into another direction now.

Freakin' hideous!
hell no that looks ugly
The statusbar is kinda remiscent of HTC's sense. The icons are just ugly. Take away message of these ads is, one can customize an Android phone (skin) to the point of it being unrecognizable (as well as unusable?).
Touchwiz is just a luncher, icons and a blue bar. The blue bar I now like, the launcher and icons are easily changable even without rooting.
Obviously a marketing guy pulled random screenshots off the internet. The second shot is showing an HTC Sense wallpaper, so stop worrying that this is Samsung's rendition of ICS. Look at the Galaxy Tabs with Honeycomb if you want to get an idea what TouchWiz on ICS will look like.
look and see the new sharp device, with its own android os

Want me to be honest?
Touchwiz may be cool on GB, but it's the ugliest thing that happened to ICS. I mean those ugly icons, green layouts, I wonder if Matias Duarte sees that, he will get an infart?
For other side, that one on the video looks pretty much like a "better sense", I dont like the style, but gesture control used is pretty innovative (Plus that weather thing, wich looks amazing)
EDIT: Title is kinda missleading, if I read well is just an interface (Perhaps a just a framework) not an entire OS

Hello, I write to you all Arc owners because you have to know the truth!
With the last ics (and also gingerbread some apps) the phone is really slow opening simple apps like the gallery, the telephone dialer, and more things you perfectly know. The incredible comes now! I installed the xperia S ics apps, launcher etc, and incredibly all works like a charm. The gallery is incredibly fast, the telephone dialer opens very quickly, the launcher don´t have lag etc....
This is a Sony strategy to make us think that the arc is outdated and buy a new phone.....it´s a shame! Sony do the things right with 2011 xperias!!!!!!!!!!
we will need more feed back on this! cause its really getting very annoying to wait every time you want to dial a number!
for me it takes around 3 days after a restart when the dialer starts to lag..so i used to restart the phone every 3-4 days to make everything smooth again ..anyways xperia s ICS apps looks promising
Strange, my phone became slower once I installed the Xperia S ICS apps. Especially the dialer.
can i have the post from where to install the apps for Xperia S.
and a tutorial will also be appreciated !

Man this is F**king crazy. just installed it and now i can say that my ARC ICS is as smooth as gingerbread. How come that this made my ICS experience so good. its so smooth and no lag. I've have rooted my arc and i've deleted all the bloatware but it was still laggy.. now it's like ice on water.. so f**cking smooth.. try it and you wont regret it.
the album gallery, phone apps, contact apps and messaging apps is just great.
It is true, the Xperia S ICS launcher makes it much smoother now on old lovely Arc (LT15i), so I recommend everyone to try it. It is not just wishful thinking it really makes a difference. :good::good:
But I have a bug when I receive a call, the screen goes black for 3 seconds before I can answer the call, but I dont know why yet (Stock .431 firmware with Trinity kernel and Xperia S ICS launcher). :crying:
Letter to sonymobile:
I´m an angry Xperia Arc user. Like other users i have been here giving feedback, requesting new things, but i see nothing..........xperia arc is laggy, slow, have and old kernel, etc. What happen with the galery? It´s pathetically slow, and the same for the music player when it have to load the covers, the launcher is not fluid and not to talk about the ics telephone dialer.
What makes me laugh is that yesterday I install in my arc the xperia s ICS apps, and what surprise! the gallery works super fast, launcher with no lag, walkman with equializer, mega bass, more and beautiful widgets, the phone dialer opens instantly and many other features.
Sony this is the promise of been updated 18 months? What Xperia arc users have done to deserve this?
Why the xperia S software works better on a 2011 telephone? Very bad sony!
Why don´t you install the new software in the 2011 phones by default, you have it already created!!! But no, you have to give us very bad optimized software, yes I understand this is an strategy to make us buying a new phone....this is the time to take note sony! Give us what whe want.
Would love to see reply from Sony!

Sony is playing their cards really well.making us believe that our ARC \ S is outdated & our hardware cannot handle ICS.The Xperia S ICS apps work really fast & with efficiency on our ARC \ S.Lets say for example Sony's latest models Xperia Miro , Tipo.these handsets r running 800mhz processor & Adreno 200.& to think these r getting the ICS out of the box.how is that possible ??? & seeing this i think the X10 community will be in a RIOT(i just moved from X10).
Our Handsets r more than capable of running ICS.
Sony disappointed me for sure.I think they did not even put in decent effort to build ICS for Xperia 2011 line up.they want us to think our phones r outdated & want us to buy their new "SONY" branded handsets..
Shame on u SONY !!!

No it does not shoot repeated shots, buy you can download the app called fast burst camera lite from the market that does. Also if you flash Arconium 4.0 and Trinity kernel V1.6, then flash the Xperia S apps you will have a nice fast and stable ICS.

Give us what whe want.

it's a marketing strategy
if all 2011 xperia phones get the same software as those 2012 xperia phones
then there will be no selling points for those 2012 xperia phones
marketing is not just only about giving what customer wants, but also making customer wants.
but now it seems that sony just p*** us off by just porting some of the xperia S apps on gingerbread to ICS without optimizing them (while those news phones have new apps, e.g. dialer, walkman), some stock apps remains the same except a polished icon (like the stock alarm, music player, etc) i bet the xperia S apps on ICS are optimized for ICS
it's not the first time that sony p*** users off, everything marketing campaign (all early birds receive almost no promotional offer), releasing arc S at the same price of arc ~6 months after arc was released. sony makes beautiful phone but doesn't do beautiful marketing
