I'm still entertaining picking this up instead of the Asus Transformer but I saw two things recently on a video that discouraged me.
1) Local HD Video
I've heard MoboPlayer can tackle most formats so that helps a bit, but what is HD playback like on the device? Does it stutter? Does it have a hard time playing anything 720P or perhaps just 1080P.
For some reason, the lady had a really hard time playing 1080P on this thing.
2) Clear.Fi
I haven't seen a review that actually covered this feature. This is so important to me. I sold my iPad because I wasn't happy with it. I loved Cydia and having XBMC on it though because I could pretty much watch anything.
I was hoping Clear.Fi was going to make me forget about XBMC but I haven't seen any videos on Youtube or heard people discuss Clear.Fi too well.
What's your experience been like? Do you have problems streaming specific types of files? Does it convert on the fly or does it only stream specific file types?
I'm still considering buying the A500, one of the points I had noticed was a statement from Acer that 1080p playback on the device will be available via a future update. If I recall it's due June/July
Thanks. I appreciate the heads up.
to OP.....Yes no one has touched base on the clear.fi features but from my experience just mp4 files.......and it streams over your wifi network so there isn't any converting on the fly since it only plays mp4's but it will see avi's and wmv's but will not play it ....it says cannot play format unknown hopefully when rom developement progress may some how we would be able to watch other formats like video codec installs but it kinda sucks because all my vids need to be converted to work which is sad lol

Have you guys tried streaming with the help of a File Explorer and a video player like MoboPlayer.
I remember I was able to use the File Explorer on the Gtab to find videos on the network and then watch them with my choice of app.
Clear.fi is just a transport as far as I know. In essence, it's an app like upnp that sees shared compatible media across your network. It then allows you to use a media player on the device to view the file.
So for example, if you have Windows 7, media sharing enabled and put videos into your Windows 7 Video library, music in your Music library and Photos in your Pictures library, clear.fi will detect it all over your wifi network.
Because of this, I don't think it has any hard limits as far as what clear.fi will play as it depends 100% on what your tablet hardware and software will play. For now, that's just mp4s using a certain profile when it comes to videos. Some mkvs will play too as those are just wrappers. I've also seen a thread where someone has claimed to play some realplayer files I think. I myself have played mp4s that are smooth as silk in both 480 and 720p and I have had others that were extremely jerky. This has to do with profiles which I don't have the details on. I can tell you what I THINK it means, which is that mp4s come in several "parts" and that the newest one which compresses the most data is referred to as h264 which the device can't seem to play well at all. I converted a 720p movie and left everything in tact except for specifying the resolution needing to be up to 1280x800 and for it to be in MP4 format and it played flawlessly. I use a program called Freemake. I haven't attempted to convert any 1080p.
I have an intel quad core 6600 with 8GB of RAM and that took 40m so there's no way I'm converting my entire library however it's no problem converting a few movies and maybe a season or 2 of TV in prep to hit a roadtrip or do some sort of travel. I also have an Amazon Prime and Crunchyroll membership so I don't even really need to do any of this.
This isn't a brand limitation afaik, it is due to Honeycomb and Tegra 2. We know Tegra 2's hardware can support a myriad of formats, but we don't know if Nvidia has released a full Honeycomb dev kit yet and since Honeycomb isn't open like Froyo and GB, I'm not sure if it will be indicated on Nvidias site when it is released - for all we know it's already in the various tablet manuf. hands so we just have to be patient. So far the promises for updates in June by both Acer and Asus have me hoping that the 1080p upgrade is a sign of more supported formats and some fixes as well.
Yeah I've been having major problems getting HD files to play at all- converted 480p movie to mp4 had no problems, but can't get the same converter app to spit out a 720p to mp4 file except in mkv container format. Keeps insisting on 4:3 ratio on mp4 files. Once I get it figured out (if I do lol) I'll post the app & settings
Every Tegra2 device has problems with 1080p, 720p and anything encoded with h264 with main profile and high profile (so with almost any HD video out there). So it's a problem on A500 but also on Xoom, Trasnformer and other tablets too unfortunately.

Not every Tegra 2 device, every Tegra 2 device with Honeycomb.
Tegra 2 has been out since last year and a number of the ones shipped with Android 2.2 don't have an issue playing HD video in any format. For example, this is what the GTablet by Viewsonic supported:
S1080p H.264/H.263/ VC-1/MPEG-2/4/WMV9/DiVX 4/5 Video Decode
1080p H.264/MPEG-4 Video Encode
Supports multi-standard audio formats, including AAC, AMR, WMA, and MP3
Mind you, I don't know if the native resolution has anything to do with it as that has a 1024x600 resolution, I do know that it played 95% more files than my Iconia does.
Do you reckon the stuttering will be fixed with an update, and when do they usually come out?
I have been doing this to help stream content and it works like a charm.
1. Download UPNPlay from the market
2. Download Rock player from their web site (the one optimized for the tegra 2)
UPNPlay detects your server and will allow you to browse your contents and will play the video with Rock player. since Rock player supports a slew of codecs you should never have a problem playing anything. I even threw a .OGG file at it and the tablet played it with no problem. Also note that the quality (lag) of streaming HD content depends primarily on your home network.
The Clear.fi app sucks...
Enjoy streaming your content.

You still cant play mkv h.264 right? From what I have read on xoom and gtab forum its a hardware issue and not software.

Yeah I play mkv with no problem using this method. The problem is with honeycomb not with the hardware. Try it out and let me know if it works. Its been working for me.
I would agree on clear.fi sucking. I've been using Skifta with the standard WMP12 media sharing in W7 and it works great.

Its a hardware issue and every tegra 2 device has this issue. You source is not hd 720p if you can play it. Tegra 2 can only play substandard H.264 baseline profile videos and its still choppy. Most people are using MPEG4 to get reliable play back with tegra 2. Read any of the xoom & Toshiba tab forums.

I actually went to edit the post about it not being a hardware issue as soon as I posted it but couldn't because I had to wait due to me being new to the forum. I didn't have the proper information to make such a claim... Either way I have not ran across a video that I wanted to watch that I couldn't. I have been mostly watching anime on it (hi rez MKV) but I will try out an hd movie when I get home and report back.
so is it a hardware or software is that the device can't play back movies smoothly and can it be fixed?
ok so I checked out a few movies yesterday. All movies were in HD. 50% played fine while the other 50% played but with so really bad hiccups. The files I had less issues with were MKV that were displayed at 720 and were a smaller file size (probably not true 720P). 1080 video murdered the tablet lol. I have had 0 problem playing HD anime but again they are smaller file sizes. This method will play all non hd video without a hitch. Hopefully this issue is fixed shortly in the next update but that is me just being hopeful.
Hi guys, it's about a week that i'm tring to create a flawlessy working HD video for the Iconia, i've tried a lot of config but no one works, so i tried with Up downloaded from iTunes and it works like a charm, with a very good quality in about 4GB with the native Honeycomb player. So i take my Tron Legacy BluRay and tried to create a MP4 with HandBrake with AppleTV 2 preset but when i play it with every player i've got on my tab (native, Mobo, VPlayer, RockPlayer, Vital and Nemo) it's like fast forwarding and i cant slow it down to normal speed. With MediaInfo i compare the downloaded Up m4a and my rip of Tron, they look the same (same ref frames, same b-frame and all) but the iTunes one works, mine not. Obviously on PC everything it's ok.
So guys, what do you use to convert your videos to playback on Iconia?
I took the advice from this post and was able to get a 720p conversion using Handbrake from a 1080p mp4 rip of Shaun of the Dead, using Loose Animorphic setting and 1280 Picture width. You have to go to the Advanced tab and set Maximum B-Frames to 0 (from default 2?) and Preferences/General/Output Files, uncheck "'Use iPod /iTunes friendly (.m4v) file extension for MP4'". Also a good idea to make sure the Audio's set to no more than 160kbps, I think that's the Honeycomb maximum audio rate for video files atm.
Oh, the 720p file ended up being ~2GB, looks good but not great picture (occasional blur artifacting on hard scene transitions.)
Thanks, did you use AppleTV preset?
I'm going to try with your settings (i thought i used the same, but probably i'm wrong), tomorrow morning i'm coming back to update.
I've been using this preset: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cVBpeQNWbEQ and have had no problems
That preset works perfect.. Thanks!
I use normal and no b-frames and i got a playable videos but very choppy. I'm going to try that present, thanks Bootup.
I've used HandBrakeCLI under Linux to convert HD MKVs for use on my Iconia. It definitely works ok for 720p video but not yet tried any 1080p.
I've written a couple of scripts that convert a single mkv file and also a directory full of mkv files, they can be downloaded here: http://db.tt/Fq7knIr
Usage is simply: "mkv2iconia.sh inputfile.mkv" or just "bulkmkv2iconia.sh" for a full directory. They will both produce "inputfile.mp4" that can be played via hardware accelerated system player
Requirements: a linux command line, HandBrakeCLI, and a lot of time/patience.
Hope this is useful to someone.

I'll give it a try if the preset posted before wont work for my rip of Tron Legacy.
I've been using a Windows application called DVD Catalyst 4 (tools4movies.com) to convert video. It had a lot of buzz about it on various forums, but I was skeptical. But it has a group of settings specifically for the Acer A500 (fast, HQ, 1080p) which make it easy to use and the new beta version works with DVDs or Blu-Rays (even copy protected ones if you have AnyDVD installed). I've done a few movies as tests and it seems to work very well.
And I was a user of Handbrake and RipBot264 previously.
I'm ripping a DVD now to try this process. It's getting good feedback, but I'll be able to decide for myself once I get it on tab. http://www.androidtablets.net/forum...rum/14292-ripping-videos-dvd-acer-solved.html

@DJ_Jedi
At the risk of sounding stupid, how are you using videos downloaded from iTunes on your Acer? I thought they were DRM protected.
Do all of your videos that you have encoded come out a bit choppy? Like skipping frames all the time.

I just take it, renamed to .mp4 and copy into my Movies folder, it said "Could not work, copy anyway?" i said yes and it works.
But great news guys, used the Xoom preset posted on the previous page and it works great! Picture quality it's not the best, a little bit lower than on my previous tries, but definitely good, i'm gonna try 2 ref frames and target size 4GB and not avg bitrate 3500.
i use rock player... it plays pretty much every video file

Been using DVD Catalyst for a long time now. I usually rip in a Divx encoded AVI wrapper, but the Iconia Tab d/n support AVI files. So I did a couple rips using the Apple TV HQ HD settings and that is working peachy. I didn't realize it had a specific device profile for the Acer (doh!).
I like this tablet, but the poor media file format support will keep it from being my main entertainment portable go to device. That will remain my Archos 70IT (250GB) for the time being.
I think i'll stick to Handbrake + Xoom Preset downloaded from here, good quality and about 3 hours conversion with a 2.1 dual core mobile CPU, guess how much it takes with an i7, because i'm going to buy a new PC this summer and i'm waver between i7 2600 and new AMD's Bulldozer...

So, bought the Gtab on Friday, got a 32gb unlocked (Sweet). So, here is the problem that appears to be happening to almost everyone.
My video playback is Horrible, I've tried multiple codex's, and different Resolutions.
The videos so far i've tried.
3,343 Kbps 1280x720 at 29.970 fps, AVC ([email protected]) (CABAC / 4 Ref Frames) .MP4 Container, Very Choppy.
1,390 Kbps 640x272 23.976 fps MPEG-4 Visual (Xvid) Advanced [email protected]) (BVOP2) .avi Container Very Choppy
5,000 Kbps 1280x720 29.970 fps, VC-1 (WMV3) ([email protected]) .wmv Container Plays Flawlessly
Everything but the .wmv will play flawlessly on my Vibrant. Actually .wmv's are the only thing that i have found that won't play on my Vibrant.
I will test more configurations, but so far i'm not pleased with the video playback on the galaxy tablet.
I've tried other video players off the market, Moboplayer, mVideoplayer, haven't tried RockPlayer yet, but i had it on my vibrant and I felt the playback was not as good. Maybe i'll try it on Honeycomb.
So, I guess list your experiences so far, and suggestions. I will update as I go and find things.

Unfortunately, the fact that Samsung kept their hands out of Honeycomb has a downside. As far as I know, the Tab supports no more video types than stock Honeycomb. Which results in almost no good support at all. I've come to deal with it and you can, too.

Whats wrong with just converting everything to hi-def MP4 on your desktop/laptop and dumping on your tablet? I mean the iPad does it with great success and gives the user the impression that it can play every video format??
The tab is a 10" screen, just about any video format 720p and above (hell even some 480p) will look just as good as 1080p on your 40-50" tv screen....or am I missing something???

What program and settings do you use, then?
Ok, I just purchased the 10.1. I use it alot to play back mp4 and m4v videos that have been encoded by Handbrake. What I've noticed on the 10.1 is that while they look excellent, when panning, the video pans with a jerky motion and is not smooth.
Any suggestions? I've looked around the forum but have not found anything definite. I've encoded the video at 720p.
From what i've read and researched, Tegra 2 only supports H.264 with Mainline Profile, Meaning 3 Reference Frames and no B frames, i've encoded several 720p Videos that way at 5Mbps and they play flawlessly.
While researching, i came across someone that came up with a Profile on Handbrake. That is what I've been using to encode my videos and so far, everything works great.
I will continue to do more Research.
Just a fyi, it does support High Profile, but with a max of 4 reference frames and 3 B frames.
Check the very first post here:

Background
As I understand it, Tegra 2 should playback up to High Profile 720p and Main Profile 1080p. However, with limitation on Honeycomb and/or lack of driver release by Nvidia, current crop of HC tablets do not playback anything above Baseline Profile smoothly. Future updates by Google/Nvidia should fix this issue, but it looks like we may have to reencode High/Main profile media for the time being.

I've only converted mkv files, but for 720p ones I use 1280 max output width, 20 video quality, live video type, high h.264 profile, and veryfast encode speed. For 1080p I just change the profile from high to baseline. All of my videos (with the exception of Avatar.....Man that's a long movie) are cut by two thirds. I guess I should mention though that I have a Motorola Xoom til I can sell it and get a Tab

I dont have the tablet yet but I'm going to buy and doing some research now,
how if we dont convert the file format ? is it possible to watch or is it laggy?
does the sound and the screen match?
Why would you do that?
The screen resolution is not even 1080 pixel height.
Don't you know that?
It's a waste of resources.
Try to get 720p instead.

Let me know what your research shows. I've been converting blu ray and mkv into 720p mp4 using DVD catalyst 4, real simple setup. From what I found out, mkv files do not work on any tablets because mkv is a container. If you convert it to mp4 then any tablet can handle it, including my phone galaxy s captivate . Takes me an average of 3-4 minutes per TV show and 10-20 on a movie. I stopped encoding at 1080p because there was not much difference other than size of file.

they work but not with high profile settings. you need to reduce them.
you can google what high profile for mkv is.
The answers you are looking for: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1060825
mkv is not a format, its a container for H.264 format.
You should be asking "is it possible to play 1080p H.264 in the galaxy tab 10.1?"
The answer is yes BUT (and a BIG BUT) you can only do so if the H.264 file is encoded in the old H.264 baseline profile which nobody uses anymore.
Tegra 2s video accelerator is way to slow to play H.264 videos that are encoded in the popular Main/High profiles which everyone uses today. Yes its unfortunate but you have to recode all your videos to baseline profile if you want to watch on ANY tegra 2 based units.

Tegra 2s video accelerator is way to slow to play H.264 videos that are encoded in the popular Main/High profiles which everyone uses today. Yes its unfortunate but you have to recode all your videos to baseline profile if you want to watch on ANY tegra 2 based units.

The tab, along with every other Honeycomb 3.1, tegra 2 device plays H.264 high profile 720p and main profile 1080p video just fine.
Although given the screen resolution, playing back 1080p video of any profile is pointless.

Correct it CAN play them back but at only very low bitrate and 1080p is not pointless since you can hookup to TV or monitor via HDMI
I did some testing on bitrates for the Teg2 at 720p HP here,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=15054949&postcount=250
it does OK at 6Mb/s, and chugs when bits hit 10Mb/s. 6Mb/s avg is about the ceiling for most 720p videos, so one can generalize that the Teg2, at HC3.1, will play a fair number of 720 H264 HP videos (in MP4 format). Ruminations are that HC3.2 will speed things up a bit further.
The clip, along with others, are here if anyone wants to try them:

I've played with h.264 video on the Gtab, Use Baseline profile for best results. I've done some encoding in High Profile, and baseline, and compared screen captures, and you can't tell the difference, it has mostly to do with Compression, the higher your Profile (Ref Frames, B Frames, CABAC) the smaller your video file will be without suffering Quality lose. Just that higher profile requires more horsepower to decode, which Tegra 2 does not have.
hmm samsung should have gone with the SGS II guts. It plays pretty much whatever you throw at it

Honeycomb only supports Tegra 2 CPUs. HC 3.2 brings support for Qualcomm CPUs. I could only wish this thing had the SGSII CPU.
Yeah, much as I like my Tab, I always feel like I'm taking a step back when I use it after using my SGS2...both in speed and display. I'd queue up in the pouring rain for a week to get a SAMOLED tablet.

mkv is not a format, its a container for H.264 format.

Which explains why I am playing 720p24 high profile h.264 with no problems. Oh. Wait. No it doesn't.
Tegra 2 can handle high profile fine at 720p as long as you avoid wighted p frames. However the stock player does not. Enter diceplayer, built on the NDK and supporting all T2 decode capabilities. The stock player is totally borked.
1080p however is another problem. But you'll probably hit the fat32 4GB file size limit with those anyway before you encounter issues with high profile content. None of my 1080p MKVs will fit on the device anyway due to the fat32 limitation, so transcoding it pretty much a given. So I tend to go to 540p or even 480p just to save space. The screen is small, and while I can tell the diffeence between a clean 720p encode and 480p it doesn't bother me in this scenario. And if you drop down to 480p weighted p frames work again.
So, essentially Mr. Element, you don't what the hell you're talking about.

I can only support what ianken said. I can play 720p hig profile just fine with Diceplayer.
Here is a test clip to see on your own. http://www.multiupload.com/CJU6YB5JC3
It is in High 4.1 Format
just thought id let you know it does play 720p mkv files just fine (tested on my galaxy 7" with no skipping or slowness at all) assuming since it works on the 7" the 10" wouldnt have any issues with it.

Not entire true since manufacturers can add their own drivers to the OS
I highly doubt gingerbread is tailored to a single platform

I'm can play 720p high profile without any issues on Galaxy S Captivated. Gtab 10.1 and other HC tablets are using tegra2, that has some issues playing mkv high profile 720p. So far maker of diceplayer are the only one who have figured out how to make use of tegra2 to decode high profile 720p.

Just thought I'd post this here in general too, since people tend not to check the "Themes and Apps" section. In short, full HD (1920x1080) is working great on my tablet with the latest BS player lite. It played a .mov fine, a .mkv said that HW decoding isn't supported and that's where I stopped, since I don't have full HD videos in any other format.
Link to the thread in the other section: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=20657377#post20657377.
Tried 5 different videos now, all were working steadily at 20-28fps (over LAN play).
Can anyone else test it on his tablet?
Thanks for the info, I dont have any of my video in MOV format so i tried some of my other files.
It struggles to play 720p x264 files in both MKV container and MP4
1080p .... Unwatchable.
At the moment it seems dice player is the best option, it handles 720p x264 avc4.1 mkv pretty well, which is the format most people would use to store their bluray media.
The Galaxy Tab 10.1 comes with 1280x800 resolution, so although you may have your videos playing, they are not playing at BlueRay HD quality.
You can save some storage room by downsizing them.
Yeah I know, I was just excited about it, because sometimes, even 720p videos struggled hard ... Seems my excitement was a bit unjustified, as it seems it was only a few files that can play smoothly at 1080p, and they were probably able to play nicely before the BS Player update too.
Most of the 720p mkv files i have tried either have audio a little out of sync or it becomes choppy when there is fast movement in video. Do you guys think files like this will play better when ICS comes out? or must we get a tegra 3 tablet to enjoy 720p mkv?
If you're not the one encoding the videos then you aren't in control over playback quality on your devices. The tegra 2 has limitations on what encoding settings are supported for h.264 and these have been discussed in various threads. For those who want to play files over their networks without having to redo their rips it sucks big time. What I do is just run plex media server on my htpc for videos I may want to watch occasionally and I'll rip things I want to carry using the proper setting specific to my tab.
