This requires a Sprint phone number
First you will need to integrate your Sprint number with your Google Voice account. Read how to here: groovypost.com/howto/howto/integrate-google-voice-with-sprint/.
After you have done that than download the Google Voice app from the market to your tab.
Once that is done than you will be able to send & recieve text from your tab just like you do from your phone (with your cell phone number). Plus you can also text and make phone calls from your computer from your cell phone number.
Notes:
- This will not require you to download the google voice app on your phone. BUT if you do than your phone, tablet, and computer will always seemlessly sync all your text. With out the Google Voice app on your phone than you'll just be able to text like normal from it but any text you send from your computer or tab will not show up on it.
- You can not make phone calls from your tab using the Google Voice app.

Nope. As of now only Sprint and GV have this option. One more reason why Sprint is awsome lol.
Or just download textab from market

Thats the next best thing if you dont have Sprint. It isnt the same thing tho, it isn't a seemless integration nor a true sync. I've tried textab and all other similar apps.
This worked perfectly thanks for the tip

Actually I've been using this with my Verizon phone and my tab ever since I received my tab in June. AFAIK the only thing that doesn't work with Verizon is MMS.
P.S. and Sprint sux for coverage in the East unless you're in a major city, and even then sometimes not.

Just read the directions posted. No need to do all that if you're on Verizon. Just sign in to your Google mail account in a browser. Then go to Google.com/voice and sign up for your free Google voice phone number. It will send a text to your phone to verify the phone is yours. Enter the code they gave you. Now you have two phone numbers (I use both numbers for business as I'm right on the border for two area codes). Choose your google voice area code and phone number. Then install Google voice on your tab. Your Google voice number will ring to your phone as well, and you'll get texts on your phone and tab, but unlike using Sprint, you'll have to keep your Google voice number as well.
I use my Google voice number for business as well as selling on Craigslist, that way it's very easy to block numbers from the goofballs on Craigslist. Log into Google.com/voice on your browser, go into history, find the offending number, click "more", click block. They will then receive a message stating the number has been disconnected when they call you.
P.P.S. just to avoid confusion, all texts coming from your tab will be from your Google voice number, and not your cell number, which I find convenient for reasons given above, but may not work for others.

I never had an issue with sprints coverage, I would like verizon to show a coverage map without areas with roaming agreement
I used to have verizon id be in a bright red spot on the coverage map and get no service

Same for me using Sprint. Have to stand up in my bay window so the calls wouldn't drop while being shown in a full coverage area. Just because Sprint has a free roaming agreement with Verizon doesn't mean you'll actually get to use the Verizon towers unfortunately, because you have to be in a Sprint non coverage area for it to roam on Verizon's towers.

But by integrating your sprint number to your GVaccount you CAN send text from your tab using your cell number which is the whole point of this. I do not want to give all my 150 + contacts a second number for me just so i can text them from my tab lol.
And as far as sprint coverage sucking and the whole roaming thing, that is not true. I travel all over the US for work and ive had signal everywhere that ive gone. Plus its way cheaper. I pay 40 a month for unlimited everything and 500 mins which i never use anyways. And i can force my phone to roam, one more perk of being rooted lol.

And as I said in my post, I use both numbers, and for those that don't mind using two numbers, they can use Google Voice on their tabs with Verizon bro.
Was just commenting that you need not have Sprint to use it, as you CAN use it on Verizon.
As far as your experience with Sprint coverage goes, I'm glad someone is happy with their coverage, because I certainly wasn't, and I know I'm not alone. I drove to Florida for six months and had Sprint then. Lost coverage more times than I can count. I switched over to Verizon, drove back, and had coverage the entire time. Not to mention having Sh!!te coverage while I was on the Treasure Coast of Florida, nor the horrendous coverage up in the far Northern New York State, and between Rochester and Buffalo (where I live).
To each his own. Again, my only mention was so that the person inquiring about using this with Verizon would have a "credible" answer
EDIT: Since my first post seemed to offend you, I appended it

Its in case you want to save your cell number you have had for a long time. I haven't ported my number to Google, but I >DID< change my google number when I moved to a totally different state and wanted a new number... it cost me 15 or 20 bucks and was well worth it. I dont give out any number but my Google number and I freaking love it.
Yes, I did and began to experience this.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=956753&highlight=cricket
Sprint DID cancel my account even though I begged them not to. I then signed up for service again (new 2 year contract) to test google voice on Sprint.
Needless to say I canceled the new contract sold the evo on ebay and just got an atrix. Too bad because I loved that phone.
There is no lag on ATT or T Mobile
I do not recommend Sprint w/ google voice under any circumstance.
From Wikipedia:
Features of Google Voice, many retained from GrandCentral, include:
A single Google forwarding number to all of the user's phones
Unlimited free calls and SMS within the US and Canada, up to three hours in individual length.
Calling international phone numbers with rates starting at US$0.02 per minute
Call screening. Announcement of callers based on their number or by an automated identification request for blocked numbers
Listening in on someone's recording of a voice message before taking a call (press 2 while answering, * to "pick up")
Blocking calls from specified numbers
Send, receive, and store SMS online
Answering incoming calls on any configured phone
Call routing. Selection of phones that should ring based on calling number
Voicemail transcripts. Reading of voicemail messages online
Listening to voicemail online or from a phone
Notification of voicemail messages via email or SMS
Personalized greetings based on calling number
Forward or downloading of voicemails
Conference calling (press 5 when answering call)
Call recording and online archiving (press 4 while on a call)
Switching of phones during a call
Viewing the web inbox from a mobile device/phone
Customize preferences for contacts by group
Ability to change your number for a fee
Ability to port your mobile number for a fee
Specifying an existing phone number instead of the Google Voice number on initial setup for use with limited functionality, such as some voicemail functions.[28] and using the voice mail system for the user's phone number (mobile devices only

The "phone" is just a drop in the bucket compared to what they already have anyway.
I did it and love it so far. I can change carriers every month and people have my number....Its my work number so I have to have it. If your a phone freak like me and are not under contract, its great! I have had simple mobile, Virgin and Sprint in a little over a month but still have my main number. So far so good...

wonder if the pic messages would come in if the texts were forwardd through email? probably not
No, because I already have enough voice latency.
http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php/1621673-Voice-Latency-Test-Results
land line to Sprint: 149ms
land line to ATT: 162ms
landline to Google Voice to Sprint: 279ms (google voice adding 130ms)
I really don't care about mms so thats not an issue for me.

HELLS YEAH! Thanks for the info!
I just logged into my Google Voice Account, (I had a previous Google Voice # separate from my Sprint #) and now there is a Sprint logo next to my cellphone number that is linked to my Google Voice Account.
If I click edit, under my sprint cellphone number it brings up a new menu
You can now see there is checkbox where I can select if i want my text messages to come through google voice.
Old Functionality
That 'send text message' is old functionality and only gives GV permission to send various texts to that specific cell phone.
Once the integration is available to everyone (jealous of those in Beta, BTW) you will just click the 'Change/Port' link next to your current GV number.
Hope this helps!
I can't wait for this to happen. I want GV integration soooo bad.
@azyouthinkeyeiz you rule!
Be careful! As of today, if you call Sprint tech support, they'll walk you through the "sprint integration" by getting you to PORT your number. They assured me it wouldn't port - but everything on googles site was saying "are you really sure you want to cancel your cell contract..." I bailed. Glad I did, as many others fell for this and lost their lines.
When you have the option in your account it will look different than what we see now...

When I try to do it, it tells me there will be a $20 charge payble via google check out.
If you get the $20 charge warning, that is the path to PORTING your number... DO NOT PROCEED.
Apparently some accounts are, in fact, active with the integration tools (beta accounts). They have an extra set of options that the rest of us don't.
Mojo, can you describe the options you had (or post some screen shots)?
They sent me the beta invitation about a month ago. As soon as I logged in, a screen popped up asking me if I wanted to use my existing gv number or use my sprint number. From what I've read on the net, it should be open to all sprint customers on the 26th.
Before the beta, I got that same $20 mesage to port my number over. Just wait!!!! Everyone should get the option soon.

I got an invite a couple weeks back and tried it out. I didn't like it at all. SMS kinda works but mms attachments don't. That's with the stock messaging program too. Until google fixes call routing, lag during conversations and adds the ability to send AND receive attachments in both stock and gv apply, I will keep everything separate. IMO it's not all what it's cracked up to be.

Google Voice is a call routing scheme. Basically, you'll be able to port your Sprint phone number as your Google Voice number. GV will then be able to take any call made to your Sprint number and route it where ever you wish - you can have it ring both your home phone and your mobile, your mobile and your work phone, your wife's phone too, etc. You can even set it up so that if certain people call you it will route differently. Also, all voice mail is stored on the GV servers and automatically transcribed (although typically not well). In theory it's very cool - kind of like a personal, virtual PBX. Sounds like there are a few technical hickups though.
Speak of the devil...
Hello,
You have been invited to start enjoying the benefits of the Sprint integration before anyone else! We are interested in your feedback as we roll this out to the entire user base and have listed a link to a form where you can send feedback and/or questions.
There are two ways to enable the integrated service:
1. Option 1: Keep your Sprint number (all the benefits of porting without the need to). In this case, your Sprint number becomes your Google Voice number so that when people call your Sprint mobile number, it rings all the phones you want.
How to enable this: click on the "change/port" link next to your GV # in the settings page, choose the option to use your existing number, enter your Sprint number and select the Sprint option.
2. Option 2: Replace your Sprint number with your Google Voice number (all the benefits of the app without the need for one). In this case, all calls made from your Sprint phone will display your Google Voice # natively (same for SMS).
How to enable this: click on the "enable Google Voice on your Sprint phone" link next to your Sprint forwarding phone. If the link does not show, click on edit and use the link to verify whether your phone is eligible.
In both cases, Google Voice replaces Sprint voicemail (pressing one on your phone links you to your Google Voicemail) and international calls made from the Sprint phone will be connected by Google Voice. Integrating your account with Sprint means you will still get the benefits of Any Mobile Any Time if that is included in your service plan.
Important Notes:
The integrated service only works with a valid Sprint mobile number.
For this early release, Sprint support channels will not be available for support, including Sprint Retail Stores, Sprint Customer Care, Sprint Telesales, Sprint Direct Sales Reps, etc.
If you need support, or have feedback, please fill out this form
If you use the Google Voice app on Android, you will need to log out and log back in to make sure the app stops using call interception.
Thanks,
Vincent Paquet, on behalf of the Google Voice team

I'm trying to follow the instructions but I'm not seeing the options in my GV settings. I guess I have to keep playing with it (that's what she said).
I just got this email as well, I can't quite figure out what to do with it though. I went to the settings page, but I don't see a change/port link.
I see the "get a google voice number" next to the already listed google voice number, but when I click it and then click "I want to use my existing mobile number instead" it says there's a $20 charge.
I think that's attempting to port my number to google and will result in a sprint ETF. Any idea where I'm supposed to go to?

Same. I'm in as well but it appears it isn't turned on yet for my account.
From the email: "How to enable this: click on the "change/port" link next to your GV # in the settings page, choose the option to use your existing number, enter your Sprint number and select the Sprint option."
I have no "Sprint Option".
They sent out the emails a little early it looks like.
Or they could be pushing updates right now to our accounts. I'll check every hour. This is going to be perfect for the no service areas. Fire up wifi and still be able to call and text.
Here's another question I hope you guys could answer. I have $15 credit left on Google voice. Will I be able to call international with my credit or will I be charged through Sprint? It would suck to lose that credit and money.
google.com/support/voice/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=1207074
You may want to check these step by step instructions to set it up if you have not already done so. (address to instructions above, just add prefix to it if needed, post count to low to post link)
per the faq's:
MMS is currently not supported by Google Voice, so MMS sent from your Sprint phone will always display your Sprint number and won't appear in your Google Voice inbox.
They flipped the switch guys. I just completed the process and set my Sprint as my GV. Will test features now.

I just tried to dial a friend in Guatemala and it's saying my account is not set up to call the number. I hope this won't disrupt international calling. I'll play around with it some more.
Yep, I'm all up and running. Going to test sms n ****.
SMS works fine, with one caveat: It doesn't work with handcent. Instead, texts just appear through google voice.
I don't really mind this myself as I have no further use for handcent ever since fixing the phantom voicemail problem I had with AOSP.
You can however use handcent to send SMS, just not receive.
EDIT: Found a fix for it, see next post
Weird, when I go to voice.google.com, I don't see the option to use my mobile number. I am not a current GV user.
For Handcent users
For Handcent users:
Go to google voice, under Settings (gear icon on the top right) > Phones, under your cell phone number at the bottom click Edit, then check "Receive text messages on this phone" your text messages should now come through handcent or any other text messaging app for that matter.

Not yet, I was responding to the comment that the switch had been flipped (implying for everyone)
So I got a new link in my google voice this morning:
Check eligibility for Sprint integration:
Well I was excited for a second. I clicked the link and then it said:
Unfortunately, Google Voice cannot be enabled on this Sprint phone. Please contact Sprint for more details as to why this cannot be enabled.
AWWW.
So I called Sprint. Man I wish I hadn't called Sprint. The lady said that something was wonkey with my account and that the workaround was for them to port my number to Google, issue me a new Sprint number and to set up GVoice on integration that way.
Well they ported my number to "Google" but at no time asked me which account to attach it to. It is just gone as far as I'm concerned.
I've lost my number and Sprint can't find it. They say they have tride to port it back and it failed. They said they have to wait two hours to try again.
Holy WTFPONY Batman. What do I do now???
Any of you Sprint Fellers wanna chime in?
**UPDATE**
I got my number ported back in and my phone reprogrammed. The folks at Sprint don't seem to have any idea that they have an integration deal with Google. Sprint...shame on you...great idea, great feature, POOR rollout!
I'm going to have to go with the wait and see method for the time being. Thank GOD I got my numbe back.
mine is saying the same thing when i do the check eligibility.
think ill just wait instead of messing with it. i dont wanna lose the # ive had since 98
I just ported my number not problem now i can leave my phone in the car for meetings and just use my work phone with Google voice ?

so.. all it is doing is moving your sprint number to your google voice, or making your google voice number your sprint... and then you get the google voice visual voicemail.. well.. isnt that the way already?? what are the benefits/cons?
I think the main difference is you're now able to associate your current Sprint number as your actual Google Voice number without having to actually port the number and get a new number with Sprint (and thus canceling your Sprint account in the process).
I have a Google Voice number separate from my Sprint number. I'm assuming when I get this option and choose to move my Sprint number over I'll lose my current Google Voice number.
I guess the question is what happens if I decide to leave Sprint later? Is that number associated with Sprint or with Google at the end of the day? Will I need to do a port in order to keep it associated with me? That's unclear.
i would think it would stay in google voice.. if gv had an empty button.. i would probably do it.. but im not going through 10 a time and deleting history/trash etc..
Well i hope itstays with Google voice, you still get mms on my phone but the rest it works on Google voice app for iPhone, i use it for the last 1 hour not problems. I just can make calls from Google voice iPhone app and idk about android app tho

Same error here. I've had my GV number since launch.
Called Sprint, got escalated about seventy billion times, nobody seems to actually know what the hell "Google Voice Sprint integration" is. They either tell me that it's not their problem, contact Google; or that if the Google Voice app is installed and working, then that's it and it's "integrated" (even though it's not). They eventually told me it's "because my account is corporate" and hung up on me when I told them that is not true.
I have a discount because of my employer, but a coworker has the same thing and got his integrated earlier this week, so the corporate thing shouldn't be an issue.
VERY FRUSTRATED!
edit: To be clear, the benefit to "integration" option #2, (keeping your existing Google number), is that calls made directly over CDMA (either without the GV app, with a non-smartphone on Sprint, or when no data connection is present) display your Google Voice number as its caller ID. This enables: quicker dialing of numbers without the GV Android app intercepting and routing the call through GV; using mobile-to-mobile minutes for outgoing calls; and (presumably) SMS caller-ID spoofing, allowing us to use Handcent or any SMS app instead of the GV app for texts.
I'm getting the same error when trying to integrate. It sucks because I was looking forward to this. I really hope it isn't because I've got a discount through my employer, because my line is definitely not a corporate line
I got this message the first time I tried as well. I had it check my number again, and on the second attempt it worked. I also have a discount from my employer. I don't know if that has anything to do with it.

I don't get why people want their Sprint number as their GV number... I use my GV for business, sales, etc... I give it to whoever I don't want to have my real Sprint number. Why would anyone want it any other way?

Even if you do it the other way around (your sprint # becomes GV #) you get all the nice blocking features you would normally get with GV. Seems win win to me.

But if you integrate the number then you only have 1 number... Seems like a loss to me... maybe i'm missing something, I haven't paid much mind to this to be honest
So I had the same error, called up Sprint, and they said that it's because of my municipal discount.
"You have a type g-4 government municipal individual account, and all type g accounts are banned from the integration," were the tech's words exactly. Funny thing is, I don't have a government account, government plan, or anything. Just a 20% discount for being a part-time municipal employee.
Now to wait for the business center to open so I can yell at them... *sigh*

Calls coming into your sprint number do not go through the gv servers first so the only google service available is the voicemail. I had a few numbers saved in gv as blocked but they'd still ring through because the person was dialing my sprint number. Since I integrated, no more unwanted calls
I have yet to get this option in Google Apps GV.
I just got off the phone with Sprint (after being transferred 4 times because no one had any idea what I was talking about) and confirmed that I cannot access this feature because I have a "Public Sector Government account." Come on Sprint...I'm an individual with my own account, don't punish me because of where I work!
I wonder if you have to deactivate GV on your phone first and then try and activate with the sprint button. I am on a corporate plan as well but I haven't tried this yet for fear of losing the whole feature all together.

Then learn about it before posting ignorantly.
maybe i dont get it but i just dont see the advantage to this. i already use google voice for voice mail and i dont really care if my txts forward there because gvoice isnt capable of mms anyway. and i have free calling over wifi. other than the blocking unwanted calls, whats the advantage? im with the dirtyshroomz on this one.
This isn't so much a Nexus 4 question than an android, however it does somewhat affect my decision on purchasing one.
I am currently an iPhone user wanting to move over to Android at some point, however am still reluctant due to my situation at work.
Currently where my cube is, I get no cellular service but I do get a strong wifi. iMessages works no problem and I'm able to send and receive them without issues. Problem of course is non-iPhone users get left in the dust and I have to step outside to receive their messages.
Now with the release of the Nexus 4 tomorrow, I can buy one, but am hesitant because I will get no messages until I'm out of the building. While this is fine for productivity, I'm often forced to use email instead for planning lunches with non-coworkers instead of just sending texts.
I'm sure this question has been asked before, but as a new user wanting to go android, is there a way to push my texts from my phone number to some kind of text messaging app, without porting my number? (I just renewed my contract so early termination is not an option for Google Voice).
I really do want to go to android but iMessages does have its perks for being wifi.

Apply a GV number and give it to your friends. It's just 1 txt away.
Did you try WhatsApp, Viber or KikMessenger?
I don't have mobile connection inside the buildings in my university but WiFi works great.
Try Jaxtrsms
@wngmv So you're saying to just have the Google Voice number forward the text to my current number? I'm wondering if that could work the other way around...
@brom25 I'd rather not go the App way because not everyone I know uses those apps, esp people with iPhones. My situation is somewhat unique because I don't have cellular service in the building whereas most people do.

Not really. When you apply Google Voice you can have a new number. Google just link the GV number to your phone number so if people call your GV, you can get the call. But if people txt you, you'll be getting the text message using data instead of mobile network. So if you tell your friend to text you at your GV number, you'll be receiving messages. But it's not any kind of forwarding. You'll only be getting txt in your GV application.
At least that is my experience.
But if all your friends use iMessage they can't txt you using your Apple account. It is basically a messaging service shared only among Apple products. But they can txt you by your GV number or phone number.

Gotcha, my concern is just getting texts while I'm in this "non-cellular" area. It'd be nice to just push the text to the app without having a new number, but this may be easier said than done.

Yeah. I understand what you want but am not sure if such a thing exist. To push text messages to another app requires reading your text message content. I'm not sure if you want any app to be able to do that.
There are many cross platform alternatives to iMessage, such as WhatsApp, Kik, Viber etc... mentioned in this thread. If you can convince your friends to switch, that would probably be the easiest way. I've only used WhatsApp extensively, but it worked well as an alternative to SMS/MMS. WhatsApp also has the best device support, so if you have friends on Windows Phone, Blackberry or Symbian you can connect with them as well.
If that's not an option, then Google Voice is really your only alternative. However, you would have to start giving out a different number, and there are some side effects of it. Google Voice uses data for all your text messages, so if you are in an area with poor data service you cannot send or receive text messages even if you're still getting signal. Google Voice also does not support MMS. Last, if your plan includes free calling to other mobile phones, but still has a minute allotment for land lines, all of your calls received through your Google Voice number will use minutes.

Apps like Handcent and other alternative SMS/MMS apps can read and write to the SMS database on your phone. The issue isn't allowing access to your text message content, it's that there's no way for an app to receive an SMS sent to your phone number except through your phone. They are delivered over the mobile network on your phone and not available anywhere else. AT&T has launched an "AT&T Message" app that allows you to view your SMS/MMS on your computer or tablet, but unfortunately it's a) terrible and b) only available on AT&T branded phones.
If you have T-Mobile, pray that somebody could port Wi-Fi calling in no time
As a side question, can you route gvoice texts to the standard mms app or does everything need to be done through gvoice?

You need to use the Google Voice app. There is an app that claims it will allow integration, but YMMV.

You definitely can make them come directly to your standard mms app because thats how I have it right now
