In both cases, Google Voice replaces Sprint voicemail (pressing one on your phone links you to your Google Voicemail) and international calls made from the Sprint phone will be connected by Google Voice. Integrating your account with Sprint means you will still get the benefits of Any Mobile Any Time if that is included in your service plan.
Important Notes:
The integrated service only works with a valid Sprint mobile number.
For this early release, Sprint support channels will not be available for support, including Sprint Retail Stores, Sprint Customer Care, Sprint Telesales, Sprint Direct Sales Reps, etc.

If you use the Google Voice app on Android, you will need to log out and log back in to make sure the app stops using call interception.

I'm trying to follow the instructions but I'm not seeing the options in my GV settings. I guess I have to keep playing with it (that's what she said).
I just got this email as well, I can't quite figure out what to do with it though. I went to the settings page, but I don't see a change/port link.
I see the "get a google voice number" next to the already listed google voice number, but when I click it and then click "I want to use my existing mobile number instead" it says there's a $20 charge.
I think that's attempting to port my number to google and will result in a sprint ETF. Any idea where I'm supposed to go to?

That's the same problem I'm having dude. I'm going to log out of my GV and log back in after 10 minutes.
I want to know how it is going to handle MMS.
I can be a test dummy when I get it to work. I'm wondering that also.

Here's another question I hope you guys could answer. I have $15 credit left on Google voice. Will I be able to call international with my credit or will I be charged through Sprint? It would suck to lose that credit and money.

per the faq's:
MMS is currently not supported by Google Voice, so MMS sent from your Sprint phone will always display your Sprint number and won't appear in your Google Voice inbox.
They flipped the switch guys. I just completed the process and set my Sprint as my GV. Will test features now.

THey just turned it on. Log back into GV. I'm in.
I just tried to dial a friend in Guatemala and it's saying my account is not set up to call the number. I hope this won't disrupt international calling. I'll play around with it some more.
Yep, I'm all up and running. Going to test sms n ****.
SMS works fine, with one caveat: It doesn't work with handcent. Instead, texts just appear through google voice.
I don't really mind this myself as I have no further use for handcent ever since fixing the phantom voicemail problem I had with AOSP.
You can however use handcent to send SMS, just not receive.

Weird, when I go to voice.google.com, I don't see the option to use my mobile number. I am not a current GV user.

Nice one! I was confusing people telling them to text one number but call another.
BTW I don't think the switch has been flipped, I still don't see it.

Don't know if it's working for anyone else, or if anyone else has tried it, but Google Voice is working for me as of last night. Ported number without having to terminate my contract, and is now my primary VM. If it hasn't been working for others yet you should go ahead and try it

I'm pretty sure Porting will cancel your contract with Sprint. They are setting up Google Voice to use our Sprint numbers, but I haven't checked on the status of it yet. I hope OP didn't screw himself tonight.
I'll keep my current settings... Voicemail goes over to the VM number I have, I can use the Voice app to manage it (plus my PC). I'm good for now.
I've been using it as my primary VM. It works good, except that when I get a voice mail, I get the VM notification, an email from gmail and a text message at the same time....

im still not sure i understand how this is going to be different. so now i use gv with my sprint number and all i can do is get voice mails, manage it online and get transcribed voice mails (as well as the sms and email notifications i have turned off)
so with the upcoming system will i be bale to do everything i could do with a GV number with my sprint number?

Correct. Google will just switch your current google voice number with your sprint number. So now when people call your sprint number it will ring your computer, other phones and your Sprint phone.
You can block numbers from google voice so when people call your Sprint number they get a, "This number is out of service."
You can text people from the computer and it shows up as your Sprint number.
Customized voice mail greetings for each person if you want.
I think everything in explained in this thread about all the options you now have.
Currently they are slowly rolling it out to everyone.

I received the invite awhile ago and I'm not sure what I want to do. There are a few unanswered questions about this that make me hesitant to switch anything.
1. Has Google fixed the occasional call routing to the wrong number or saying the number is disconnected?
2. Is the lag still present at times when making or receiving a call?
3. If we decide to choose our Google voice number as our sprint number, how will that affect my account details (online, *2, in person, or at in store payment kiosk)?
4. If I decide to keep things the way they are with having a sprint and gv number and using it "the old way" will I still be able to use it this way after the changeover?
5. Is Google voice going to just handle the voicemail side of the sprint integration or will our calls be routed from sprint to Google then out?
6. If I choose to adopt my gv number as my sprint number, will any incoming or outgoing calls "technically" be using a landline number, thus eating away at mobile to mobile minutes reserved for non cellphone callers?
7. Is this Google's answer to making it possible to send attachments with text messages?
8. Will using gv app for texting be redundant since, if I choose to, my gv number will be associated with SMS/mms anyways?
Since I am running out of questions, I will post the email for those who don't know what I'm talking about.

I like the idea of having my Sprint number ring any and all phones I choose but I'm not going to change until I see how it affects others with respect to their minutes. I wouldn't use it if it's just a way to con people out of their M2M.
In short, if I were you OP I'd wait.
I'll just keep them separate like I do now. I prefer it that way.
I pulled the trigger last night and used my gv number. I'm thinking I might have a problem. Would someone that hasn't integrated try a test then tell me what happens. With the stock texting program, send a picture attachment to yourself (your phone number) and tell me if you have both a sent and received text. I'm sending a pic to my sprint number and it acts like it sends but I don't receive anything.
Unfortunately google voice doesn't support mms.. that's one of the reasons I never made the full switch.

This is a little different, kinda. Anyways I turned off Google voice integration and logoff then back on it gv app and I tried sending myself an mms with the stock text program. It worked this time. Do I don't know if it actually sends it out when gv integration is on but it definitely doesn't receive mms. I am not talking about the gv app. I might send Google some feedback and leave it turned off. Off until at least they enable the mms feature from gv app.
That is really stupid though, you can send mms through stock messaging app with Google voice integration but you can't receive any. Retarded!

Can you not recieve MMS from anyone? That would be a HUGE down fall for a lot of people. I find my self relying on MMS a lot any more.
I didn't get anyone to send me anything but I did run a test. I did the Google voice integration and chose the option to use my gv number. If I send anything from stock mms then it will show from the gv number. If I send a text to my sprint number with stock messaging it shows up on both the stock app and Google voice app. If I try to send a pic with stock to my sprint number, it acts like it went out but I receive nothing. If I go and turn off Google integration and restart the gv app, then I get the choices back to make calls through Google, etc. The way it is now. When you integrate you lose the option to choose to use with or without gv. I send a pic to my sprint number from the stock app after turning it off and the pic goes out then comes back to me.
I don't know if when its on the mms actually goes out or not because I didn't have anyone to test it with. I'm not about to try the other integration option because I don't want to give up my gv number I chose and paid for. I picked one originally but later decided I didn't like it so I had to pay to choose another. Trust me, its mind numbing to go through pages and pages of available phone numbers in my area code until I found one I liked.
I got the message too. I am not switching at least for now. I have found google vm cumbersome. I really don't like that I have to download vm messages and then I can not play them through the earpiece. It is played through the speaker. I haven't seen any real benefit to integrating so far.

How? That, plus having to download my messages killed the Google vm experience for me.
-Just to be clear, when I said ear piece, I meant the part of the phone where you put your ear. Not an ear piece that you plug into the 3.5mm headphone jack.
I can listen via the earpiece or speaker phone. Having to download the messages is a pain and I miss VVM but it works fine and I like that I cna check my voicemail on my laptop or anywhere else right now. I dont use google voice for phone calls or text though. just the google VM

I just logged into my Google Voice Account, (I had a previous Google Voice # separate from my Sprint #) and now there is a Sprint logo next to my cellphone number that is linked to my Google Voice Account.
If I click edit, under my sprint cellphone number it brings up a new menu
You can now see there is checkbox where I can select if i want my text messages to come through google voice.
Old Functionality
That 'send text message' is old functionality and only gives GV permission to send various texts to that specific cell phone.
Once the integration is available to everyone (jealous of those in Beta, BTW) you will just click the 'Change/Port' link next to your current GV number.

Be careful! As of today, if you call Sprint tech support, they'll walk you through the "sprint integration" by getting you to PORT your number. They assured me it wouldn't port - but everything on googles site was saying "are you really sure you want to cancel your cell contract..." I bailed. Glad I did, as many others fell for this and lost their lines.
When you have the option in your account it will look different than what we see now...

Well, *as of today* that is the only option anyways... Just wait for the options to populate on Google's site. (as gtjacoby previously said)

When I try to do it, it tells me there will be a $20 charge payble via google check out.
If you get the $20 charge warning, that is the path to PORTING your number... DO NOT PROCEED.
Apparently some accounts are, in fact, active with the integration tools (beta accounts). They have an extra set of options that the rest of us don't.
Mojo, can you describe the options you had (or post some screen shots)?
They sent me the beta invitation about a month ago. As soon as I logged in, a screen popped up asking me if I wanted to use my existing gv number or use my sprint number. From what I've read on the net, it should be open to all sprint customers on the 26th.
Before the beta, I got that same $20 mesage to port my number over. Just wait!!!! Everyone should get the option soon.

I got an invite a couple weeks back and tried it out. I didn't like it at all. SMS kinda works but mms attachments don't. That's with the stock messaging program too. Until google fixes call routing, lag during conversations and adds the ability to send AND receive attachments in both stock and gv apply, I will keep everything separate. IMO it's not all what it's cracked up to be.

Google Voice is a call routing scheme. Basically, you'll be able to port your Sprint phone number as your Google Voice number. GV will then be able to take any call made to your Sprint number and route it where ever you wish - you can have it ring both your home phone and your mobile, your mobile and your work phone, your wife's phone too, etc. You can even set it up so that if certain people call you it will route differently. Also, all voice mail is stored on the GV servers and automatically transcribed (although typically not well). In theory it's very cool - kind of like a personal, virtual PBX. Sounds like there are a few technical hickups though.

this seems pretty cool, i'm excited to see how it works. Does anyone know if calling a friend's google voice number counts as a mobile call or landline using anytime minutes? will this new option change that?
So, I got the 'preview' Email yesterday informing me that I can get early access to this.. Think of it as being a beta tester. Anyway..
I went ahead and did it last night. I used my current Sprint Number and overwrote my existing GV number. It seems to only bind your Sprint number to Google Voice as some sort of "smartbind" or "software bind", but not like I thought it would. This is by no means permanent as you can easily "disable" it without hassle. MMS works fine (for those who choose to use their Sprint number as GV). No, they doesn't show up in GV Inbox, but you can send and receive MMS the same as before. I'm sure Google and Sprint will figure out a way to integrate MMS as well, then that horrible Sprint PictureMail website can finally RIP.
However, If any of your friends are bound to GV, be prepared to receive messages from their GV even if you send SMS messages to their non-GV number. So, if you don't already know someone has GV, you will get messages from a GV number and will probably wonder who it is.
Example:
I send a message to my friend.
She replies, but the reply comes from her GV.
(at this point I got confused because I didn't know she had GV)
I send another reply to her mobile #.
Replies still come from GV.
I decide to just send replies to GV.
Other things to note:
-If you choose to overwrite your current GV with your Sprint GV, your current GV number will expire in 3 months.
-You can have it ring to your Google Chat if you're on a PC. Awesome! This opens up a number of possibilities maybe.
-For some reason, I can't figure out how to get the Google Voice App for Android to notify me of Voicemails only. I set it up to send me a text message when I receive a Voicemail as a workaround.
For those who want to try and keep their current GV rather than replacing it, try this.

Just want to add u don't even need the app. Google voice will route sms to your phone as normal. Having this integration allows you really to use your Sprint number anywhere u can.
Only benefits.using.the app is sms will go out on WiFi and data

This is a limitation when using apps such as Juice Defender. This is a primary reason why I am so excited to finally be able to use regular SMS again as it doesn't rely on data. I can also use the custom SMS apps such as GO SMS and Handcent.
I am eagerly awaiting this integration as I have been using GV as my primary voice # for over a year now and I did not get in the beta.

Yes, however, you will either need to enable sending voicemail notifications to text so that you can call your VM, or use the Google Voice app for your voicemails (it doesn't support sending vm notifications, only "new items" which include sms/vm) so using text nofications along with the app is the current workaround.

My biggest question is does it use your cell mins.
Example, my friend calls me from his cell. Is it still counted as mobile to mobile? or does it go to google and then my phone and is billed as regular landline mins?
Mobile to mobile. Your sprint number becomes your gv number.

It still relies on your Sprint plan. So if you have expendable minutes then yes, it will be used.

It intergrates by.setting.up gv to.send sms to.your sprint phone. Works just like before intergration

I have been using my Sprint # as my GV number for several days now and so far it has worked as intended. I am still able to use my native text app for those that think you cant. To use the native text app you just make some setting changes in GV.
I tried it and don't like it so far. I tried the option to use google number as sprint number because I paid for it awhile back, I like the number, and I don't want to lose it. I think that google should allow you an option to keep your gv number, even if you make the sprint number the gv number, if you paid for the gv number in the first place. If you paid for it, they shouldn't throw it in the pile to expire in three months.
Fortunately if you pick the same option as I did, the use gv number as your sprint number, you can back out and make them separate again without losing the google number. Nothing happens to the sprint number, as far as I know.
Something that still seems unclear is if doing this integration makes people with mobile to mobile have to use their landline minutes, even if they are talking to someone on a mobile, because they are going through google.
I posted my questions and findings in the epic forum awhile ago. I'm not certain if choosing the google number makes all your calls route from sprint to google then out or what. I don't remember making any calls to see if the lag issue still existed or not. I don't know if there might be a call routing problem sometimes like there is when using separate numbers and making a call but choosing the use google voice to make the call from the gv app. No use in asking the sprint people about this because you will probably get different answers. Also trying to search google help for voice is like the needle in the haystack thing.
Ok, here's some tests I ran and my results. If you can try these yourself and see if you can get different results by trying different things, things I might have missed, please do and post your results.
The first test I changed my google voice account so that my google voice number was my sprint number. After restarting the gv app as instructed, I lost the ability to do some stuff. The choice to use, or not use, google voice to make the call is gone. I wasn't able to call anyone at that time to test if there was lag in the audio or not. I tried sending a text from the stock app to my sprint number and it went through and showed my google voice number as the originating number. The text went to the stock app, but I don't remember if it went to the gv app or not. I sent a text from the stock app to my gv number and the message bounced back to the stock app and gv app. I tried sending a picture from the stock app to my sprint number. It acted like it sent but I didn't receive anything. I tried sending a pic to my gv number and nothing received also. I don't know if it actually went out or not. I didn't have anyone to send a pic to to tell me if they got it or not. I was trying this late at night. I don't know what would have happened if someone called my sprint number if the phone would still ring or not.
I went back into google voice on the computer and changed the settings so that it wasn't integrated anymore. I logged out then back in with the gv app on the phone. The choice of using gv to make the call came back. I sent a text from the stock app to my sprint number and it bounced back like expected. I sent a text from stock to gv app and it bounced to the gv app as expected. I sent a pic from the stock app to the gv number and it went out but never came back as usual. I sent a pic from stock to sprint number and it bounced back.
What I am guessing is that, from my experiences, you can't receive attachments if you make your gv number your sprint number. Like I said, I don't know if the attachments are going out or just acting like they are. When numbers are separate, pics bounce back when sent from then to my sprint number.
Unless someone finds out something different, or google fixes stuff when they make it live, I will be staying with separate numbers and conditional call forwarding and being able to hide behind my google number when calling people I don't want having my real number or I might want to block them some day. There's been word that mms is either in the works or done with google voice, it just hasn't been officially made live or an updated gv app that allows attachments yet.
I will wait and see what happens. Like I said, maybe I missed a setting somewhere? I don't know. Everything looked okay in the settings on the google voice account on the computer.
I tried integration again with gv number being my main line. I tried calling my sprint number an it rang through so no problem there. I didn't have the ability to test mms but I did read on one of the gv help pages that if you send a sms with stock app, it will show your gv number. If you send a mms, it will show your sprint number. if someone wanted to reply to a sms you sent with a mms, then it would fall into the black hole. Apparently if people want to send you a mms, they must send it to your sprint number. This is certainly a pain for anyone else to remember. In my opinion, this integration shouldn't have happened until mms was introduced and integrated.
If you run separate numbers and conditional call forward to gv for voicemail, like I do, then there's no difference that I can see with the old way or new way. It just seems like a different way of getting the same end result.
From what I've read, If you make the GV number your cell number and someone sends you an mms, it goes to your stock reader. Since your gv number is now also your sprint number, it shouldn't matter...unless I've misunderstood.
Wasn't this supposed to officially roll out today? I still get the $20 fee, or is that always the case?
This whole google voice thing with sprint is making my head hurt, hopefully I can get some clarification here.
I jumped on board with google voice the first chance I could. I have a google voice number, and that's the number I give out to EVERYONE!
My wife is the same way, hell, she does not know her Sprint phone number.
1) Can we make the google voice number our "sprint" number, and still keep all the benifits of the google voice number (calls from GMAIL, ringing different phones, ect)?!?!?!

Ok so I orginally thought the idea of GV integration with sprint was awesome...after fiddling with it. I was very disappointed.
The problems I had with it were...I dont want to use my GV number as my primary. I dont want to change my GV number to my cell number. Each option had issues that I felt needed to be addressed. Changing my GV number to my cell made it to where txt would be comming into my phone via gv app. Yes there is a work around but ita annoying and I dont want my text stored on line. I also didnt want to change my gv number, this to me sounds like it could be a bad idea at some point in time, and cause other issues. So I set out how to get classic google voice back with the new app that will not let you just use it for vm heres how i did it, now I know this affects the Nexus S 4G with the version of GV they include...however the market version does seem to be different.
Option 1 (For Rooted Phones)
1) Use Titanium backup or some other root explorer to delete the stock voice apk, then reboot recovery and wipe dalvik
2) Once back inside the rom download voice from the market as that version doesnt seem to suffer from the ****ty options that are stock on the phone
Option 2 (The proper way for rooted and non rooted phones)
1) Launch GV app on phone, and sign in, when it ask choose to change your gv number to your cell number.
2) Get annoyed and go get a shot of vodka, and wait about 15 minutes (honestly because you wont be able to change it back for at least 15 minutes.)
3) Login to gv on the web (voice.google.com)
4) once in there click the gear, and pick voice settings. Under the phone area choose to disable the sprint port number (your google voice number). It will disable and revert back to your old gv number
5) Where you mobile number is at you should see enable google voice mail for this line. Click that, and follow the instructions.
6) Click on voice mail and text uncheck email message and send sms.
7) on your phone open gv, goto more then settings make sure it says. Making calls do not use gv to make calls. make sure this phones number is your actual mobile number adjust sync options as you wish and make sure My gv number is indeed your gv number.
8) DO NOT SIGN OUT OF THE APP (Im not sure what will happen but my guess is it will break)
9) Edit your voice mail settings under call settings and change your vm settings to GV from "My Carrier" and make sure your GV number is in there.
Options: Now if you dont want to use the gv app at all you can have gv send you an sms or an email instead or manually check your voice mail by phone.

I kinda did this a different way but not as elegant. I used root manager to remove google voice. I might have used root manager to remove the data too but I can't recall. I rebooted. Then I tried downloading google voice again. I think it installed. I tried running it and there was a problem. I uninstalled it. Then installed it again. That must have flushed out all the references to the program that I missed. Ran the program, signed in, chose let me choose to use google voice for every call. Then I clicked the link for conditional call forwarding and hit send. It's *28(google voice number with area code) then send. After that I hit back until I got back to the gv setup. I chose skip then next then I think I was done. It's working now the old way. Separate numbers and google voice for voicemail.

Can you explain what this workaround is? I'm not too thrilled with how the GV app handles SMS either.
The most annoying thing about this is the app options seems useless for configuration purposes. You really have to configure this through the web to work right.
After I first set it up and tested a voice mail I got
An email, an MMS, and a notification bar alert from GVM app itself even though in the app I had the first two disabled.. Finally got it down to just a notification bar alert from the GVM app only after configuring through the web. It's stupid that by default it lets you know THREE different ways you have a damn voice mail.

My texts come to my phone just as they are supposed to and since I turned off notifications in GV app I don't get notifications in the app. I get emails and texts telling me of voice messages just like before. Yes the app still receives text messages and stores them online, but I see this as a plus since txt is mainly how I communicate and my job has me working in a lot of places with internet access but no cell coverage. win win in my book.
To get texts sent to your phone you have to check the little box in your settings that says "Receive text messages on this phone (mobile phones only)"
It took me a while to messing around to get everything set up, but I'm liking it now.
I use option 2 (GV number in place of cell number). It works flawlessly. I have had no issues. For me this was easy because I made people use my GV # as my primary number years ago. It just takes a little time an patience getting all your friends and family to use the GV #, but once its done its the best move you'll ever make.

It doesn't have to handle sms. Check that little checkbox and the sms will be delivered to your phone like they were before. Then go into GV app and turn off notifications.
Nice guide. Well since my Nexus is stock and I couldn't stand how broken gv and sprint are together I wanted it to go back to go it was.
That is to say, texts and voicemails come through notifications by the Google voice app and texts sent to my mobile number come through the default messaging app. That's how its supposed to be.
It's quite easy to do, in settings for Google voice in your phone turn off all notifications and inbox synchronization. Basically nothing should be checked. Then in the web go to your Google voice settings and under phones next to your mobile number click on "disable Google voice on your sprint phone".
That should make everything normal again. Hope that helps. I don't see the point of what sprint and Google were trying to do here. The Google voice app works just fine the way it is. Don't mess with a good thing.

I think the folks asking, like myself, are looking for slightly more detail.
After rooting around for the setting mentioned I found it.
1. Log in to Google Voice online
2. Click on the little gear in the upper right hand corner to access Options
3. Click on Voice Settings
4. On the Phones tab under "Forward calls to" click on the Edit button for your Google Voice enabled mobile phone
5. Where it says "Text Settings" check the box for "Receive text messages on this phone (mobile phones only)"
This should send texts to your phones SMS app rather than through the Google Voice app.
Hope this saves others some time searching.
My biggest pet peeves were:
1. Incoming messages from the same sender would sometimes create multiple threads inside of Google Voice.
2. SMS messages received from contacts that were not stored in Google account (i.e. corporate account) would commonly show up from a telephone number versus a name.
3. SMS messages initiated from Google Voice would not show up as threads until they were responded to.
4. Messaging application was rendered useless bloatware.
5. I don't want/need Google Voice to archive 300 - 500 text messages a day.
The entire thing is a cluster____.... I've never quite seen something so utterly stupidly organized and launched like this..
How long does it take it so when someone calls my number they hear my Sprint voicemail message instead? I just called my number and it's still going to the Google voice system. It's not activated just checked as my mobile phone but NOT intergrated anymore.

Brotha -I was about to go insane out of my mind -and then I read this. Thanks. I thought I looked at every possible setting -but there is always a button that eludes you.
Then I had to stop the double notifications bc I was getting my text message on my phone and my text in google voice. So on my phone in GV settings I Un-checked "Inbox notifications"
I was really excited about GV integration - now I wish that Sprint would have left it alone. It really is a big mess to get it to do what you want.

Thanks for the info, this is exactly what I was looking for.
I hope Sprint and Google work something out with this.. If XDA members are scratching their heads how to make this work like they want imagine how a regular novice user must feel.
The Sprint/Google intergration and its current method of "configuring" (ie dice rolling) reminds of some half assed business solution some unknown outside firm was paid to write.
I didn't have to root or uninstall. Just download google voice from the market and let it overwrite the existing installation.
