Use Google Voice and Gmail?

I've had the google voice phone number on my G1 for about a year and the match ing google voice app. And now have it on my Vibrant. It is really nice.

This is meant to be used on the PC. If you already have google voice, then you just install the new video chat add-on (linked to in first post) and you're all set.
Anyone you call will see your google voice number pop up. You can put in a phone number or the name of one of your google contacts.
This is a good way to communicate with people without having to leave your phone on speaker or break your stride if you're working on the computer.

pretty sweet...doubt Google's going to bring it to phones though and upset the apple cart with carriers

just wanted to know if incoming calls through your google number is free as well?
i know that outbound calls are free through data, but what about incoming calls in which your google voice number is forwarded to your mobile phone when someone calls your google voice number?
is that free or there is charge for that?

Call your GV # from your house phone and find out. I remember trying it out like 2 days ago, I think it uses your carrier's plan minutes.

thanks, will do that, then find out later on if my airtime minutes are being deducted. Is it the same with incoming text messages? maybe not , right? has to be free

yes it does uses the airtime minutes, otherwise, it wouldnt have reflected in my recent activity status on my tmobile account.

yes, but no MMS support.
1. Download Google Voice app to Android Phone
2. Set up account/voicemail. Make sure to adjust your setting so that texts aren't forwarded to your actual phone
3. ???
4. PROFIT!!!
all the texting is done within the actual Google Voice app as opposed to using the stock messaging app or an alternative like Handcent

^ pretty much nailed it. You can also send texts from your pc with GV.

Google Voice looks good on paper, but it's really not very reliable.
Texting works fine for the most part, but I've had delayed texts at times. You cannot text internationally. And surprisingly, the integration with Android is not great.
Also, Google Voice recently took one of my friend's numbers and gave to someone else.
It created a total mess for my friend, since she had been giving the GV number to everyone.
So, yeah it's free, but you will not get a very reliable service, and if you have a problem, Google will not respond.
I used Google Voice for about a year heavily, but am moving away from it now.

yes. but if google screws up, as they seem to do more than rarely, at some point someone else may be reading the texts meant for you.

oh thats not good

I've been using Google Voice heavily for a few weeks now. It definitely has its problems. Voice quality, delayed sms, inaccurate vvm, complicated setup. It's all a bit beta-ish. I do like the capabilities when they work. I would suggest keep using it but not exclusively. Send in surveys to Google when offered. Also mark inaccurate vvm as "not helpful" and send those in to Google too. The more people use GV, the more apt Google is to improve it. If people stop using GV altogether, it will surely be canned.

GV audio playback is low quality b/c it uses less bandwith/downloads faster. A necessary evil for having your VM sent to you via text I suppose.
The GV texting has never had an issue for me... i guess to each their own.
Stock SMS via carrier is easier, no doubt... but GV brings a lot to the table for the right price.

Do a Google search for Google Voice. It tells you what the features are.
Sign up and try it. If you don't like it, don't use it. I've had it since last year and use it daily.
Give it a try!

What is this supposed to mean? I use mostly Macs, true, because I like them. But my main HTPC is W7, and obviously my current cell phones are Androids. Just like my old, old phones were WM6, and before that Palms.
I've used GV for quite a while, and all I am saying is that it is unfit to be your main number, if you depend on your phone.
Call quality is marginal, and international call quality is less than marginal (yes, I actually have paid to use some GV features). Skype is much better for that, and it's often cheaper.
For texting it's fine, but at times I have experienced delivery delays, so if its important, I'd use the stock client (I have unlimited texting, so what's the point). International texting is not allowed anymore by Google.
I was all excited about GV a year ago, just like I was excited about Wave, but I am actually transitioning away from it now, because it's just not reliable.
Plus, as I said they can take your number away without warning, and without you being able to do anything about it.
Nothing to do with Macs. Just the facts....

GV is great, yea it's a bit beta-ish but for the functionality it can't be beat.
Not to mention free calls if you have a my circle plan, an older version of the GV app and set GV to show your number as caller id for inbound calls.
Free text, the delay is minumal and we get emails so lack of mms is a downside but I can live with it.

I do love GV and give that number out to everyone, I almost never give out my cell number unless I need some form of MMS sent to me (pictures, or some services need to send more than just text). I've rarely had issue, especially not delays, although I did have an entire day where I didn't get texts and was unable to send them. Still don't know what happened to all those texts. But call quality has been excellent on both my land/voip line and my cell going through GV. The voice call and call blocking features are worth it, too, and were the original reason I got the number 3 years ago. I certainly didn't plan on getting an Android phone back then, but the transition was great as I had started using more and more Google services.
Note that except for that one day, and probably 4-5 other days (out of over 1,000 days, and over 1600 text conversations) of minor delays, I've had zip for problems. No missed calls, and no missed texts. Highly recommended. But better integration would be nice (I just use the GV app for voicemail or to send an initial text when I don't have someone's "special" GV number).

Google Voice and Skype Working on Tab

So here is what I did... I now have a working VOIP phone service via my T-Mobile Tab..
-- Get the hacked Skype App (allows 3G calling) http://www.megaupload.com/?d=156KWZVH
-- Get Google Voice from Market
-- Go to skype.com and setup an account
-- Order a Skype Internet Number (it's $30 for a year right now -- normally $60)
-- Add a Skype calling plan ( I went with $2.99 a month for unlimited calling)
-- Set Skype to display your Google Voice Number (Caller ID Settings)
-- Set Google Voice to forward all calls to your Skype number
-- Go into Google Voice App and set it up to use your Skype number for voicemail notifications.
It works and it works pretty darn well...
Pros:
--Incoming and outgoing voice capabilities
--Unlimited calling in the US and Canada for $2.99 a month
--With 3G data plan you always have phone functions to dial out and receive
--Use Google Voice for SMS messages and you only have the one number.
Cons:
--If you don't want to use the Google Voice number for SMS then you will have 2 numbers. The one that came on your Tab that is used for SMS/MMS and a number for phone usage.
--Price for this to work per year amounts to $66 ($30 for the Skype number and $36 for the unlimited plan) Not really a con if you consider this is the total cost for a year of unlimited cell (VOIP) calls from you Tab
--If you use Google Voice for SMS it does not do MMS
Here is how it works...
When someone calls your Google Voice number it forwards it to the Skype number and the Tab rings...
When you call someone it displays your Google Voice number...
COOL....

1) a big con for me is that it means I can't port my existing cell no. to my new Tab... and since I'm a consultant and it's been my phone no. for a long time... that's kind of a drag.
2) Also, I've heard Skype call quality is sketchy at times?
3) No 911 calling via Skype I beleive?

Skype can be sketchy if on a slow or weak 3G or Wifi connection... I have had no problems with it yet though...
Yes, no 911 calling.... But you can program your local police / fire / EMS non emergency dispatch center number as a contact... That's what I did... Granted it's not as fast to get answered as 911, but it is a suggestion...
I don't see why you could not forward the previous cell # to GV then have it forwarded to Skype. Then set the Caller ID in Skype to display your previous cell number... Should work...

I might give this a try and see how I like.... since the phone flashing seems to be stuck at 2G plus a few other problems at this point....

I decided to do this route as opposed to flashing the other way... Flashing the Euro ROM does still have issues and even once they are worked out, I can't see a US carrier adding voice to the Tab... Even with flashing the Euro ROM you will still need another SIM card to use that has voice functions enabled on it (hence, a different number like this process requires)...
Many people already have my GV number so this was also an easy way to get phone function without much effort... And at $66 a year for unlimited voice, I don't see a carrier plan even coming close to that...

I really would love to see a YouTube vid please, or just a demo, I need to feel confident to give back the MyTouch 4G for this

I did this for months on my old Milestone (Droid) due to me being in Canada and everyone I knew being back in the US (and all calls to the US are int'l long distance via cell) until I found a way to make GV work here in Canada via normal phone lines.
Yes, call quality via Skype is sketchy at times, depending on connection quality, and there's ALWAYS lag.
Call forwarding works fine.
I wouldn't sweat 911, but then again I have almost no respect for that service anyway.

How stable has this been running for the ones using it?

You'll need some sort of VOIP to make it work, but it doesn't have to be Skype.
Keep in mind, Google Voice is NOT a VOIP service, it's a fancy call forwarding and voicemail service that also lets you pick a free US phone number for life.
And folks, there's always Sipdroid and a SIP number service (there's quite a few besides Gizmo)

I currently only have the Google Voice app installed (no hacked Skype). When I go into my contacts (app which came with Tab) and I click on a contact, and then click the message icon, a little screen pops up asking if I want to complete the action using Messaging or Google Voice. Furthermore, you can check the "Use by default for this action" to always use Google Voice for texting. When I click Google Voice the text shows up to other people as my Google Voice number.
If the trick in this thread can use your Google Voice number as what shows up to other people as your caller ID, wouldn't this simplify you down again to one number (the Google Voice number)?

the problem with this is skype doesnt work with Bluetooth headset. so you either have to get a WIRED headset or use speaker phone which means no privacy

Yeah, and I love that app....
About 5 minutes after I turned my Tab on I got a text asking if I wanted to buy some chronic/Mex from someone who obviously didn't know their contact's phone no. had changed!
But the app is great!

Good point, decisions decisions! For me I may be willing to sacrifice MMS for the simplicity of one phone number. I would justify it by using video calling, YouTube posting, and Facebook/Picasa pictures. I'm already giving up the native Email app because it puts weird labels on my Gmail emails instead of archiving emails like the Gmail app. So much for "native tablet optimized apps."
Cons for this route:
No 911 support
Two phone numbers or no MMS
Complicated calling procedure through Skype

so is everyone just got to use there tab with speaker phone ? because unless u use a wired headset that what u get since the TAB only has a speaker on the bottom.

How many people actually use this app and is it really a good thing to use? Just wondering about it because I notice it's in most roms and launcher downloads. I've personally never tried it. What are the pros and cons?

ive been using google voice for quite a while, both on my PC and on my phones.. works seemlessly with the SF..
its a matter of preference.. and convenience for me...i can call out using either my cell number or my google voice number.. voicemail is SO much better, and it not only translates to text, but at the bottom of the text there is a play button to hear it..
the only con i can report is that sometimes the text translation of the voicemail is a bit off..but you can still get a good idea of what the message is without actually having to listen to it..
im a huge google voice fan..

It's free to use, unlike Verizon's Visual Voicemail which costs X amount of dollars per month. I was skeptical of Google Voice at first but I've really liked it for the month or so I've used it.

I'm honestly not exaggerating when I say this: there are no cons to using Google Voice (I can't see how less-than-perfect voicemail transcription is a con since you don't get any voicemail transcription normally). Like Gmail, this is a service that's been universally lauded by the press and consumers alike for good reason.
BUT: it's not just an app on the phone that you run instead of Verizon's VVM app. It's a true telephony service, and if that sounds kind of complicated, well, in some ways it is, though Google makes it extremely easy to use (whether you just want to use it as a voicemail service, or to effectively replace your regular phone number(s) entirely).

The other part of the setup i have that i love is the seemless integration of computer and phone with bluetooth.
I spent about $80 on a blueant earpiece that allows multiple connections, and a $16 dongle from best buy for the computer.
When the phone rings, i can answer via the computer or the phone. I have had exactly 1 dropped call since i started using GV in July.
I was afraid of Google for the longest time because of privacy. Then i realized they know everything about me anyway from using search. Once i started trying more of their products i was hooked. Now i have everything Google on computer and obviously phone too.
My life is easier with the integration and they just plain have cool stuff Lol.

I have used google voice since for 6 months. I started on my BB and now use it on my Fascinate. I have friends with regular phones that use it as well, all of which love it. I haven't heard of anyone complaining or going back.

Just so folks know, you can choose to only use the Voicemail portion of Google Voice. You do not have to use it to make or receive calls...

the problem I had with google voice is it wanted to take over my entire phone. their forums you're pretty much worthless. Is there a link with good setup instructions?

There is only one downside I see to Google Voice and that's the fact that it can't send or receive MMS. Is it a big deal? Not unless you exclusively use your Google voice number to call and text people.

gv is a great product
i have my voicemails sent to my gmail account as txt
when at work my phone is on silent but I get all my personal messages

Google Voice, the entire service, is unfortnent as you must use a different number than your cell number (which if youve had for 5 years is... bad).
You CAN however use GV for voicemail with your current number, which lets you have the free visual voice mail/speech to text translations without needing a new number.

Adding your Google Voice number as one of your Friends & Family numbers equals free calls.

I love using GV for free texting. I've had my number for a few years. Worked great on AT&T/Blackberry Bold.
But with Verizon/FV I've noticed when receiving call or placing call with my GV#, there seems to be a 1/2 second delay when talking. Really started to annoy me, felt like a overseas call, so I stopped using my GV# as my everyday phone #.

Only if you actually dial your gv number and then enter the number you want to call. If you use the app, it dials another number that changes periodically. And you only get free incoming if you disable caller id pass-through.

Just jumped on the GV bandwagon after reading this thread. I've made a few calls with my sweet new Beverly Hills number. I'm sure i'll think of creative ways to use it. VVM will likely be its primary function, though. It's my understanding that GV uses your data connection for calls, correct?

Correct. The way I do it is, I access GV using my phone's browser, then I dial a number through that. It will ring my cell phone using my GV number, and then connect me to the person I'm calling.

Well I was excited for a second. I clicked the link and then it said:
Unfortunately, Google Voice cannot be enabled on this Sprint phone. Please contact Sprint for more details as to why this cannot be enabled.
AWWW.
So I called Sprint. Man I wish I hadn't called Sprint. The lady said that something was wonkey with my account and that the workaround was for them to port my number to Google, issue me a new Sprint number and to set up GVoice on integration that way.
Well they ported my number to "Google" but at no time asked me which account to attach it to. It is just gone as far as I'm concerned.
I've lost my number and Sprint can't find it. They say they have tride to port it back and it failed. They said they have to wait two hours to try again.
Holy WTFPONY Batman. What do I do now???
Any of you Sprint Fellers wanna chime in?

I got my number ported back in and my phone reprogrammed. The folks at Sprint don't seem to have any idea that they have an integration deal with Google. Sprint...shame on you...great idea, great feature, POOR rollout!
I'm going to have to go with the wait and see method for the time being. Thank GOD I got my numbe back.

so.. all it is doing is moving your sprint number to your google voice, or making your google voice number your sprint... and then you get the google voice visual voicemail.. well.. isnt that the way already?? what are the benefits/cons?

I think the main difference is you're now able to associate your current Sprint number as your actual Google Voice number without having to actually port the number and get a new number with Sprint (and thus canceling your Sprint account in the process).
I have a Google Voice number separate from my Sprint number. I'm assuming when I get this option and choose to move my Sprint number over I'll lose my current Google Voice number.
I guess the question is what happens if I decide to leave Sprint later? Is that number associated with Sprint or with Google at the end of the day? Will I need to do a port in order to keep it associated with me? That's unclear.

i would think it would stay in google voice.. if gv had an empty button.. i would probably do it.. but im not going through 10 a time and deleting history/trash etc..

Well i hope itstays with Google voice, you still get mms on my phone but the rest it works on Google voice app for iPhone, i use it for the last 1 hour not problems. I just can make calls from Google voice iPhone app and idk about android app tho

Same error here. I've had my GV number since launch.
Called Sprint, got escalated about seventy billion times, nobody seems to actually know what the hell "Google Voice Sprint integration" is. They either tell me that it's not their problem, contact Google; or that if the Google Voice app is installed and working, then that's it and it's "integrated" (even though it's not). They eventually told me it's "because my account is corporate" and hung up on me when I told them that is not true.
I have a discount because of my employer, but a coworker has the same thing and got his integrated earlier this week, so the corporate thing shouldn't be an issue.
VERY FRUSTRATED!
edit: To be clear, the benefit to "integration" option #2, (keeping your existing Google number), is that calls made directly over CDMA (either without the GV app, with a non-smartphone on Sprint, or when no data connection is present) display your Google Voice number as its caller ID. This enables: quicker dialing of numbers without the GV Android app intercepting and routing the call through GV; using mobile-to-mobile minutes for outgoing calls; and (presumably) SMS caller-ID spoofing, allowing us to use Handcent or any SMS app instead of the GV app for texts.

I'm getting the same error when trying to integrate. It sucks because I was looking forward to this. I really hope it isn't because I've got a discount through my employer, because my line is definitely not a corporate line

I got this message the first time I tried as well. I had it check my number again, and on the second attempt it worked. I also have a discount from my employer. I don't know if that has anything to do with it.

I don't get why people want their Sprint number as their GV number... I use my GV for business, sales, etc... I give it to whoever I don't want to have my real Sprint number. Why would anyone want it any other way?

I don't get why people want their Sprint number as their GV number... I use my GV for business, sales, etc... I give it to whoever I don't want to have my real Sprint number. Why would anyone want it any other way?

Even if you do it the other way around (your sprint # becomes GV #) you get all the nice blocking features you would normally get with GV. Seems win win to me.

But if you integrate the number then you only have 1 number... Seems like a loss to me... maybe i'm missing something, I haven't paid much mind to this to be honest

So I had the same error, called up Sprint, and they said that it's because of my municipal discount.
"You have a type g-4 government municipal individual account, and all type g accounts are banned from the integration," were the tech's words exactly. Funny thing is, I don't have a government account, government plan, or anything. Just a 20% discount for being a part-time municipal employee.
Now to wait for the business center to open so I can yell at them... *sigh*

Calls coming into your sprint number do not go through the gv servers first so the only google service available is the voicemail. I had a few numbers saved in gv as blocked but they'd still ring through because the person was dialing my sprint number. Since I integrated, no more unwanted calls

I have yet to get this option in Google Apps GV.

I just got off the phone with Sprint (after being transferred 4 times because no one had any idea what I was talking about) and confirmed that I cannot access this feature because I have a "Public Sector Government account." Come on Sprint...I'm an individual with my own account, don't punish me because of where I work!

I wonder if you have to deactivate GV on your phone first and then try and activate with the sprint button. I am on a corporate plan as well but I haven't tried this yet for fear of losing the whole feature all together.

maybe i dont get it but i just dont see the advantage to this. i already use google voice for voice mail and i dont really care if my txts forward there because gvoice isnt capable of mms anyway. and i have free calling over wifi. other than the blocking unwanted calls, whats the advantage? im with the dirtyshroomz on this one.
