I currently have droid VNC server on the tablet and I'm trying to establish a connection with a Windows PC over a wireless network. The wireless network only has my PC and the tablet on it. I can successfully ping the tablets ip address but the VNC listener on my PC cannot connect to the VNC server on the tablet. I've also tried the VNC server Remote Control Add-on by SmartDog Studios, but I still cannot connect. The device has been rooted with Android 3.1. Any help would be appreciated.
I'm using one called androidVNC and it works fine.

My guess is that you need to make sure that the ports match up and that they aren't blocked. When you ping another computer you are communicating through a different port than you would for VNC. VNC is typically PORT 5900. You might even need to allow inbound and outbound rules in your windows firewall to allow this.
I use splashtop HD.
Its awesome fast and easy to configure. If you want to use it from outside the same network. Like vnc Droid you have to open some ports in your router.The safest way to do this is pot forwording to a spacific Mac address.safe and will not require a password to remember.
On splashtops web site. They have walk thru to configure lots of the popular routers.

Yes, this is assuming you have set your home PC to accept incoming Remote connection, and selected which users has the permission.
From your Pocket PC, you can use Terminal Service Client:

Make sure, your XP Pro is set to accept Remote connection, from your XP Pro PC:
- Start > Control Panels > System > Remote > Remote Desktop
1) Check "Allow users to connect to my computer"
2) Click "Select Users" to add users which you allow for Remote Connection. * Strongly advise you to set password for each username
Once this is done. You can check your PC's IP address:
- Start > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt
1) Type in ipconfig
2) You will the various IPs for your PC.
If you want to test using your Pocket PC, use your PC's LAN IP. (Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection).
However when your on WiFi or GPRS, you'll have to use your PC's WLAN IP, which you can obtain by using my program I mentioned earlier.

Yes, you can. However, you'll still use your home PC's LAN IP when the PocketPC is docked in the cradle.

I gather your not connected to a LAN nor having an Ethernet card installed.
If you want to try out Terminal Services Client from your PocketPC, you may want to download this program called vxUtil from http://www.cam.com/vxutil_pers.html
Once u get this program, you can view your Pocket PC's current IP addresses. If you want to use TSC via USB cradle, take a look under "Serial on USB", the IP address for its Default Gateway should be your PC's IP address.
VPN?
Great thread for me guys. Really helped a lot. Now I can use Terminal Services to remote control my VPN Server which has the public internet IP address.
Next, however, I need to remote operate one of the workstations on my VPN. I tried logging onto the VPN through GPRS that worked. I can TS remote the server, but cannot connect to the workstation. After connecting to the VPN I tried TS with the workstation ip (local network ip of 168.192.xx.xx All I got was a could not connect server timed out message. Any ideas?

BTW the LAst IP Address web site is a great idea for us that travel constantly. Thankfully my cable modem keeps my IP address fairly static for long periods at a time. But this will make a great backup for those Murphy Law times when I gotta get on and the modem rebooted! Thanks for a great service.

Could it be a built-in or personal firewall installed on the workstation? or maybe the workstation's port for Remote Desktop is not opened?

No, no firewall and remote is open. In deed, I have VNC running on the workstation and after logging on to the vpn i can remote the workstation using vnc viewer. but i hate the interface compared to TS and don't really want to run another server if not necessary. btw i can run the workstation from my xp laptop using remoe desktop connection after logging ono the vpn

I have been searching for clarity thru islands of info in the forums as well as the net. Any help directing me would be sweet. I am trying to use my T-Mobile Wing HTC WM6 to control a computer on my home network. I have somewhat knowledge of having the server and client. Have read and installed programs. I want to be at McDonalds *or any wifi spot and log in to home computer. When I have a VNC server running it says the network ip address of 192.168.1.101 but I assume thats because its thru my network. I have went to what is my ip address.com and tried that with the port the server allows in the vnc viewer and had no luck. I think I might be too newb for such an advanced concept. I am somewhat computer savvy to alot of technical terms. If anyone could help it would be greatly appreciated. I use messengers if faster communication is necessary. Thanks in advance to any help or thoughts.

a few thoughts,
1. what version of windows are you running. (e.g Xp Home or vista )
as Vista home basic and premium will not accept a remote desktop connection without a 3rd party hack to make it work only business and ultimate support remote desktop
If on XP home be sure to set allowing of remote desktop sessions to be allowed under the system properties area.
2. do you have a password setup on the user account that you log into windows on if no remote desktop will not allow access.
3. when browsing from a 3rd party network ( e.g mcdonalds or over GPRS/HSDPA ) you browse to your external ip not the dark ip of 192.168.1.x i use dyndns.org so i can just browse to the dynamic domain ip which is my external ip of my home pc
4. since you mentioned a dark ip i can only also assume your using a router at home. this means you either use such as LogmeIn/Hamachi and browse to the home pc's Hamachi IP ( e.g 5.5.100.50 ) or you will have to set a port forward in your router to forward any requests from port 3389 to the local IP of the home pc, ( e.g 192.168.1.100 )
I use static ip's in my router at home to ensire that the port forward will always goto my home pc's internal ip address. My particular router from netgear allows to have the ip of a specific machine be assigned the same ip internally based on it's ethernet adapter MAC address. making no changes required on the pc itself other them standard DHCP.

1. I am using Windows XP Home. I have allowed Remote Access under the tab Systems Tab.
2. I only have a pw on the prog VNC server on the pc but no passwords for windows *should I? :| ... Then I try VNC Viewer the the Pocket PC *T-mobile Wing.
3. I am reading up on the dyndns.org site. I assume I need the free dns service for those with dynamic IP addresses. *i hope I have that.
4. I have Linksys Bef11s4... I believe I can set static ip's though its tricky for me. I am going to try for the pc I want to connect to. This networking stuff gets a little bit blurry for me. I understand that static means non-changing, therefore the pc to connect to in network will have same ip on restarts and things. I am familiar with the port forwarding options *do i need tcp and udp checked?... again any thoughts definately appreciated...

have the logme in installed on main and when i use pda it doesnt work...i installed cab and log in fine but when i go to remote the pc it takes my access code and then pops up with error message for menuPDA.html... i cleared history and cookies and tried to make sense of the forums... I've used Logmein on my MDA Pro, Ameo and now on my Vario 3.
You should first try to remote your PC while your sitting next to it. That way you can see any firewall pop ups that may be blocking you.
I have been trying when i am right next to it... I am using my WM6 to connect wi-fi to the internet thru my network.... the pc i wanna control is on my network...
It doesn't matter what network the PDA and PC are on. Logmein uses an internet connection.
yeah, tried a bunch of things to get logmein to work, and it always comes to the page of "403 Forbidden (0x5) menuPDA.html System error: Access is denied. (5)"
checked their forrums too...
guessing i should try going back to client/server manual entry... either way, any advice from you guys much appreciated.... It seems WM6 are known for incompatibility issues with RDC situations.... hoping not the case but...thanks again guys

I am using Gooer Remote Desktop Service(http://www.gooer.com) and it let me access my home PC using laptop or mobile phone.
remote desktop only works, as far as I know, on XP pro & Vista

I set up remote desktop with mycloud/splashtop on my tf101. I can locally remote access my computer on the home network.
But I want to be able to access my computer from any network. Would the fact that when I was asked for permissions on my pc for either private networks or public networks, I checked private be the reason why i can't connect when using a network outside of my home network? If so, how do i change this permission.
Right now, when i try to connect to my computer using an outside network like my mobile data connection tethered from my phone, it says cannot reach.

You need to set the connection with your WAN IP not your local IP. On your PC go to whatsmyip.org or similar to find out what your current WAN IP address is.
If you don't have a static IP address your WAN IP will likely change at some point. You can get a free account at dyndns.com and set it up in your router (Google it). You can then connect to your PC using YOURUSERNAME.dyndns.org or whatever you setup in DynDNS.
The alternative is to use TeamViewer or LogMeIn or similar which will automatically keep track of your PC whenever it connects to the internet.
Remote access can be real pain in the butt when you are accessing over the WAN.
As mentioned in posts above you need to set up port forwarding on your router, ensure there are relevant firewall exceptions and use your external facing IP address and set up a dynamic DNS account if you don't have a static IP - some routers have built in support for dynamic DNS.
Log me in is a good free service for this but the android app is pricey (and not very good IMO) - while the interface is not ideal it does take away all of the annoying hassles.
If you do go down the dynamic DNS, port forwarding route you might find that remote desktop via 2X RDP or similar is better than splash top anyway - although you can't do remote desktop on windows vista/7 home editions.

nvm turns out i only forwarded the ports on my router firewall. after also forwarding the ports in my modem i can now access from an outside network

Just an FYI, but auto discovery doesn't work on the Android client yet, though it is coming (it is experimental in iOS).
Wyse PocketCloud does have this facility, though it doesn't stream video/games like Splashtop.

I would try TeamViewer. On your PC you can install the host version. That way you can access your PC before login. TeamViewer works without making changes in your router/firewall.
The Android TeamViewer client is free.

I finally fixed my issue with doing this last night. I was forwarding all 3 ports but I was doing TCP and UDP (which I must say I've done many times before and never had an issue) but I removed the forwarding from UDP field in my router and just left the 3 ports forwarded in TCP field. Today I can now connect and perfectly use my PC from work using Splashtop w00t!
I honestly don't know what I'm doing. All I know is that all the things I've tried so far didnt work.

My PC and NookColor share the same wifi connection via an Airport Exteme router. I know that there are two IP Address: one form y router, which I can see on www.whatismyip.com and the other is my computer's which I can see via cmd > ipconfig. So, my question is-- how do I set this thing up? Any step by step procedure?
What have you already tried? Also what version of OS are you using, some versions of windows have RDP kneecapped. Also, where are you trying to view it from?
If you already have RDP going, you can use Wyse PocketCloud to manage the connections through your google account, it's pretty straight-forward.
Personally, I use TightVNC as the desktop client and AndroidVNC Viewer and ConnectBot on the nook. I only use my home computer when at home, so the setup is fairly simple, have AndroidVNC talk to myipaddress using port 5900. Be sure to use the connecting password when you set up TightVNC - also check the character count as you enter it, sometimes it doesn't take all the characters, ie; the password "bob-ismyuncle" is stored as "bob-ismy".
For connections remotely (not on the same network) I first SSH into the machine with ConnectBot, then set up a port forward to localhost:5901 which AndroidVNC then connects to.

Make sure RDP is enabled on your PC (google it, really easy to enable)
If BOTH machines are connected to your network... get the PC's IP address (via cmd ipconfig) and connect to it using the RDP port (3128 on Windows)... ex: "192.168.100.199:3128"
If you want to use RDP away from home, you need to configure your router to forward any external connections on the RDP port directly to your PC. Then you'll want to connect using your external (router's) IP address. Ex: 111.222.333.444:3128 => 192.168.100.199:3128 .... then connect to "111.222.333.444:3128"

I am seeking advice and/or feedback. Lack of 3rd party vpn (Juniper in my case) is really frustrating me. I know about TeamViewer, Remote Desktop, and the LogMeIn solutions available. Part of my problem is that I do not have local admin access to my work computer.
The desktop app for TeamViewer will launch on my work PC, and it will allow for remote connections, but this is pretty clearly commercial usage of the product, and therefore would require buying a terribly expensive license.
Here's what I'm thinking.
* Install Windows 7 on a virtual machine on an HTPC that is on 24/7.
* Install TeamViewer desktop app on the Win7 VM. (connecting to my personal, home network would not be commercial use)
* While connected to my VM, connect to my work VPN server and then launch RDP to my work computer.
Thoughts? Will this be too laggy?
An alternative would be to use Putty/RDP (jailbreak required) to connect to my HTPC via ssh tunnel and then connect to the VPN server.
Until a native VPN client is provided, I think I will need to do this two step process...
Any feedback is appreciated....

I've used this method:
- a 24/7 nettop at home with Windows 7 and a public IP address. Nettop allows incoming RDP connections.
- a VPN client on that nettop that allows connection to my office. I'm using ShrewSoft VPN as it is compatible with our VPN and it works fine through an RDP session.
- an RDP client on my phone or WinRT tab
When I need to connect to my workplace - I RDP into my home nettop, establish a VPN connection on it, then run RDP client on nettop to connect to my work PC. Speed is fine.
Long time ago I was thinking about making an app based on the OpenVPN sources that would not require any drivers. That app would allow you to make a tunnel to the specified port of a specified IP inside your work network - similar to SSH tunneling. But this is just an idea - would never have time to work on it.

Ahh! i spent many a day in talks with Juniper right up to a roundtable of management about a 64bit VPN client not being available. In the process of investigating the replacement i found Shrewsoft VPN http://www.shrew.net/download/vpn
It will connect to your juniper and they also provide a guide on how to do so. If you get stuck let me know and i can share some of my config. I use this successfully on both 32 and 64bit wind7/win8. In fact i just finished installing and using it on my new ASUS VivoTab Smart.
Could anyone provide me with a lot of assistance? I've been very interested in using a VPN for my computer and phone for awhile, as well as a proxy, and other means of privacy. I just get lost in a sea of information, I just want reliable, secure. I mean, I want to make sure the government of Japan can't track me down (example obviously).

check out pirate bay, they have a vpn recommended but it's not like your site to site vpn. you could then use something like proxys.org and proxy through that then you'll be annonymised by the vpn and again by the proxy.

Thanks. I've done something similar, and it seems to be working fine. I don't have dedicated hardware, so I've used a vm, but speed is working ok.
Shrew Soft looks interesting... I need to check it out.
