Uninstalling google maps for older version? - Galaxy Tab General

Hi, I've got a new 8.9 and wanted to downgrade google maps for an older version, (pre 5) is this possible and if so how? I can't uninstall google maps and wanted an older version with the bigger writing on. The labs trick unfortunatley is not big enough. Also I have nearly a thousand starred locations in my google account that I dont wanna lose!
Many thanks

Using new (2.1) google maps

Hi,
I have a program using google maps, and I want it to show the new google maps, but each time the program starts I see the old version of google maps.
Do I need to use different method thenthe one described in the google android developers site to do that?
I can see that it is the older one since in the old version there are no maps for my country, and in the new one there are.
(I can see the new maps using the goole maps app)
Thanks,
Amir

Honeycomb motorola xoom google books app request

I bought a motorola xoom wifi and even on a factory reset, the google books app has a dead icon on the main screen and clicking on it says that the application is not installed.
It also dosen't show up on the apps list but if i go to manage applications, it's there but showing 0 kb in size.
Anyone has the apk so that i can reinstall it?
I think it's available in the market if you live in the US.
If your not however, try this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=863124
In the event the link I posted doesnt show up because I am not allowed to post them, google search "google books .apk xoom" The 6th link down will bring you right to it, it's actually a link to a post from these forums.
You need to be signed into your google account before you attempt to launch it.
I had the same problem after I rooted. You need to sync your google account and reboot a few times, then it starts working.

same exact thing happened to me...
I have discovered how to fix it.
The problem is because wherever you are, your google account is not getting 'google books' synced down to it. Probably because you're outside of the US but also happens to people in the US at times.
To get this to happen, download and install the MOBILE version of Google Books. This will prompt you that it's going to overwrite the version on your xoom. Select yes and it will.
Once done, launch the app. This will create the 'Google Book's syncing to your account under accounts and sync. Let it sync finish. Now uninstall the app, by clicking on uninstall updates under manage applications for the google books app. This will prompt you saying that you now have reverted back to the factory install of google books. Now launch google books again and you will be able to. And it will be the xoom version of the google books along with all the books you have in your account. You just need to make them offline readable. This can be done outside of the States too.
Meh, I still can't install Google books nor Earth for that matter. The above instructions do not work for me.
I'm not from the US, and when I tried to go to the mobile Google Books app, it only says that item cannot be found...
mobile version....?
Ok I finally got it working.
I had to install Google Books on my Nexus One (with Market Enabler), create a backup apk using Astro File Manager, sideload that apk to my Xoom, install it and start it up to activate syncing to my Google Account. Then I go to Manage Applications, uninstall the updates to the Google Books so that it will reset to factory application.
Finally I can use Google Books as it was intended on the Xoom.
This method should work for those outside US and who can't install the mobile version through m.google.com/books
Thats exactly what i said above.

No... the mobile version of Google books does not work for me at all. I can't download the mobile version with my Xoom because I'm not from the States. It will just say that my device is not compatible or there's no such application found.
I had to use my rooted smartphone to install the non-tablet Google Books by emulating a US carrier with Market Enabler. Then I have to back up the apk and sideload it to my Xoom before your instructions worked.
So no it is not exactly what you described
The mobile version's apk is downloadable all over the internet. Just a simple google search will net you the apk.

Hmm... Didn't work for me. I'm in Canada. Downloaded mobile apk from other xda thread. Let it complete sync. But under Manage Applications there was not an option to "uninstall updates". Just "uninstall" which it does, then Google Books is gone, Sync is gone.
Ideas? Not a fan of the mobile version and would like to try to find a way to load xoom version.

Is google books still listed in your application list? At least does it say 0.00kb?
If there isn't, you might have uninstalled it for good and a factory reset may bring you at least back to square one, though I'm not sure about that.
And what version of google books mobile was the apk that you downloaded? I believe you have to install the latest version of mobile google books in order to uninstall updates. If that apk you downloaded is an early version of google books, maybe it won't have the option to "downgrade" to an earlier version.
I think you can check the latest version number in the web browser market. Should be 1.2.2. That was the version of Google books I installed over the stock Xoom one. It allowed me to uninstall updates.
Another way out is to ask someone to extract the xoom's google books apk and send it to you. My xoom's at home so I can't do anything. Also I'm not sure if astro file manager can back it up, especially if it turns out to be a private app. Then you need to find someone with a rooted xoom and root explorer.

It's not there in applications. I can't see it in android market from Canada so don't know the latest version available. I had loaded 1.0.16. I will look for an apk of 1.2.2. That's the latest version you can see?

Hmm I meant looking at the android market on your pc browser, not on your android device. I thought anyone can at least search for apps on the web browser?
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.google.android.apps.books&feature=search_result
But anyway, yeah version 1.2.2 was the apk I sideloaded to my xoom. Try that and see if it works with the methods explained in the previous posts. If there's still no option to uninstall updates, you may have to do a factory reset to at least get back the original non-working google books.
Edit: Wait, this only works if your Xoom is a US one and at least had the google books preinstalled on startup and is not working. I'm not sure if that's the case with your Xoom. Especially if your Xoom is bought in Canada, they may have already removed google books. But I'm not sure.
Everything worked for me. Now got the tablet version of books with the 3 free books installed. Just can't download any new books yet as I'm in the UK.
Anyone know if this is possible yet?

Thank you buddy. Quite ingenious.
The "uninstall updates" option isn't there for my Xoom, probably because it's the UK wifi only version and it didn't have Books installed by default...
I now have the mobile version installed, any ideas how I can get this to be the tablet ver?

Google Voice updated for tablets

Hey all. I usually have to sideload an older version of GV because I couldn't find it in the Market. Well, if you had the same problem, then that's over. Google Voice has been updated for tablets, and the Archos can see it in the market and install it. You might have to uninstall your previous version first.

Help me please. I need to revert back to maps 6.14.4 on the galaxy note 3.

I just bought the phone and the first thing I did was to download the Google Maps 6.14.4 apk from the Internet. But when I try to install it. I get the message cannot install. I tried unintelligible updates but there is no option as there is in my Nexus 7 2012. I'm guessing that it's because Android 4.3 being a fresh install on the galaxy note 3 as well as Maps version 7. I drive for living and am completely dependent on the maps app. I tried version 7 but it doesn't allow me to use alternative routes in the middle of the journey. There must a way of installing the old version. I don't mind rooting my brand new phone. But I must get the old version installed. Kindly reply with some suggestions.
cant you get the old map for nexus 7 and install it on note3?

If you drive for a living, I'd think you'd use something other than Maps for it. Sure, Google Navigator is okay in most respects but there are certainly better alternatives out there. Waze, CoPilot, TomTom, etc.
If I drive for living surely I would have tried them all.

None of those even compare to Google maps.

I don't have a Note 3, so not sure what exactly is the problem you facing installing Maps 6.14.4. I uninstalled the new Maps 7 from my 4.3 Note 2 and was able to install 6.14.4 fine? Were you able to uninstall Maps 7 first from your Note 3?

Maps is a "system" app so you'll need root to do anything about it.

I manage to uninstalling it on my Nexus 7 running Android 4.3. But Note 3 does not give me the option to do it. It's because it's a fresh install of 4.3 and Maps 7.2. You can only only uninstalling if you had a previous version installed. The only options I get are force stop and disable. I tried installing the older apk over the new one but it won't allow it. Thanks for the reply.

lol Waze rocks google maps unless you need street view. There's a reason Google had to buy out Waze...it's got stuff they don't! Waze is infinitely better (from my experience) at determining traffic issues in real time compared to Google Maps.
Google Maps, at least version 6.14.4, is hands-down THE best turn-by-turn direction program out there, even better than stand alone GPS units.
I drive a tractor-trailer (and am smart enough to not completely rely on it's car-based routing if I shouldn't!), and I use it every single day.
It's the single biggest reason I use an Android phone.

I'm sorry; I don't mean to be disrespectful, but you must be on drugs if you think ANY of those navigation apps you mentioned are better than Google Navigation!
I've seen it posted here with link to download the apps and OP claimed it worked with both versions of maps installed at the same time, I think I even downloaded it to my computer for future, but I can't find the post now, sorry. I'm not 100% sure it was Note3 forum but I usually don't read forums for other phones, so try searching, had to be last few weeks.I have not tested it but the guy clearly said here is the link, download it and you can have old map program working along new one. Possibly the link had map version showing as non system apps, or maybe the name was changed. If you can't find it let me know, I look for the app on my computer, but not before the weekend.

[Q] Google Maps updating despite settings

I prefer an older version of the Google Maps app. In order to prevent an update, I've gone into the Play store and set for no automatic updates. And yet Maps keeps presenting me with the latest version when I open the app. It happens daily. I'm running android 4.4.2 on a Galaxy s5 G900a. It's rooted and running the Dynamic Kat ROM. Baseband is g900aucu1ance. This has got me scratching my head--my other apps don't seem to be self-updating. I've posted this in the Dynamic Kat thread, but I just can't see that flashing DK could have caused this, since no other apps are doing it.
I used to prefer the old maps too..but now use google maps and another one called My maps..also a google app..basically its the spin off of the maps feature of all your maps you have made online.. Its actually nice once you get the hang of it..but that was the main reason for me to stick with older versions..but now..b
No need..
I'm trying Nokia Here. This Google maps auto update thing is really making me angry.
