Wow, they STILL couldn't fix the compass in EI22 - Epic 4G General

Go ahead, check your compass apps. They STILL didn't fix the compass inversion problem with EI22. That's hilarious. And also why GPS is still shoddy.

just having the official GB is good enough for me

This is why I'm still convinced that there was a flub on the production line that resulted in many of our phones having the compass installed upside-down - the software assumes a certain value is north/east/etc. instead of using calibration (or gravity) to determine the correct layout

This would either require two versions (or more, depending on how many different orientations exist), or additional code to calibrate appropriately. I would vote for the second method...

Kinda need if you use something like Dishpointer Pro. But anyways, I just tested the compass and Dishpointer Pro is spot on with EI22.

There is a GPS program that will calibrate the compass. This fixed the issue for me.
I don't typically use the compass, but I was trying to get my GPS to work on the ACS ICS rom.

I calibrated the compass using GPS Tools and all is good.

My compass is correct on GPS Status app.

Some of you are reporting correct compass readings from stock? Interesting. So if that's true, then it is either a hardware or irreversible firmware issue that Samsung can't fix.
I always hypothesized that since the board on the Epic was a split PCB due to the sliding keyboard and CDMA radio, the magnometer was physically oriented inversely to all other Galaxy S devices thus simply a software issue they wouldn't fix. But if they realized this and made a hardware revision to correct this (as it now seems), then I can see why they refuse to fix it. They would fix the reversed compasses and break those who weren't.
Also, I know you can fix the problem with GPS status and doing horizontal calibration with the phone face-down.
And just a last note, the mgnetomer settings and binary driver in GB have been replaced with an automatically calibrating 'geomagneticd' daemon.
To those who don't understand why I mentioned that this is probably the reason GPS is shoddy; the supplementary data (XTRA) to assist in GPS locks provides the GPS daemon with up-to-date geomagnetic data, atmospheric ephermis data, and accurate positions of NAVSTAR satellites in orbit. Now think about it. If the device thought it were facing up and oriented due-north, but in reality it was face-down and south, it would have a lot more difficulty making an initial lock as well as maintaining one if it were ever moved. Follow?
Feel free to tear my science to pieces if you have a better explanation than I do.

Sounds good but a gps doesn't need to know which way it is facing. It just picks up a signal no matter which way it is facing.

To get a faster fix, it uses XTRA to get precise locations of other satellites.

If so, that's still pretty crummy. Such a hardware revision should've been made identifiable to software so that the appropriate driver can decide which orientation transformation to apply.

Galaxy Nexus did......but the built-in barometer that's got so many of us scratching our heads has a much different purpose. Android engineer Dan Morrill took to the social pages of Google+ to clarify the confusion. Turns out, Sammy added the barometer to help the device more rapidly acquire a GPS lock by delivering altitude coordinates to the required latitude and longitude GPS equation. From Engadget article.
The Galaxy Nexus has a barometer. It is used for things like getting your altitude to improve GPS location determination.
That's nifty. It will also help me track my altitude during my next 30km+ jump.

Is anything known about the quality of the barometer readings? Are they accurate enough for altitude?
You can use your barometer to contribute to pressureNET! It's a free, open source barometer network for Android. I'm building it in hopes to create a weather network of unprecedented size and resolution in order to improve short-term, local weather prediction.

barometer for calls/ mic
Actually the barometer is used for mic noise cancellation, it is used to calibrate the pressure on the mic to be nicelly centered for calls. :cyclops:
I thought the barometer was used with the Garmin car app, which plugs into my OBD II sensor in my car, in order to measure how much psi of boost is coming from my turbocharger.......
-.-"
I noticed a few days ago that the Nexus 4 came with a barometer sensor that is used to help the GPS accuracy. I decided to test this out using Barometer HD. It worked great and allowed me to save my pressure data.
However, the past two days it's been saying "No barometer sensor detected". Thinking this was GPS related I tried turning it on, but no luck. I ran Z - Device Test and it says I do not have the sensor either.

Pinch to zoom quick sand?

Thinking about the N4 as a secondary phone but I played with one in the T-Mobile store and noticed that pinch to zoom seemed to be pretty unresponsive and disappointing and that's putting it lightly. When pinching to zoom it felt as if I was moving my fingers through quick sand. It was as if my fingers had to literally transverse half of the entire screen before the phone started to react. Can anyone else confirm this? Like I said, this will be my secondary phone and my primary will be an iPhone 5 so I will going back and forth between the 2 phones often which will make the poor responsiveness even more noticeable and bloody annoying since the iPhone is very responsive and accurate in this department. So now I'm rethinking my purchase of this phone. Again can anyone confirm this??? Thanks
mine doesn't do this. it is very responsive.. are you talking about having to go out farther when zooming in? i think they designed the zoom in to occur after your fingers have spread over a certain distance so you don't accidentally zoom in when you don't mean to.
Its like people are just finding reason not to buy this phone cause it has real issues or they just like to complain....personal I think your all crazy . My coworker got his nexus 4 last week and its ****ing awesome the camera in HDR mode is amazing the data speeds are top notch and the screen is responsive. There was another thread on this yesterday - this is actually Google almost certainly designing around someone else's patent on touchscreen usage. They probably figured that what was going on in older versions was too close to Apple's or someone else's precise method for interpreting multitouch input, so they designed something effective but different enough to avoid litigation. There's a reason why neither Apple nor Microsoft have sued Google directly over Android - Google designs around patents pretty well.

I hear ya, but even still it'd pretty annoying and making me think before I buy. Honestly I'm a stock app kinda guy. I like the stock apps, I actually want to use Chrome but I can't, I want to use the stock gallery since it would be more integrated but I can't without this bug/feature this will also make using Google maps bloody annoying more than anything as when using maps there is a lot of zooming in and out. I'm wondering if other ROMs have this issue with the N4 or not.... Hmmm... That would be an indicator if there was more of a real issue/hardware level issue or not. Wondering if Cyanogen, Paranoid, or AOKP would have the same issue...
this is such a moot issue based completely on software filtering/calibration of your touches. Capacitors are hyper sensitive to touches, so much so that you have to tone it down and filter out all the noise... You can easily go into the software and figure out where the pinch-zoom controls are and fix them...
I am running codefireX's build and my pinch to zoom works perfectly in gallery, chrome, maps, camera. Registers my touch input no mater what I try.
If this is a deal breaker for you, I would be more worried about thermal throttling issues tbh... Those are actually hardware related.

Weird graphics corruption.

Hi. I have had this Nexus 4 for about a month and it has does some strange things with the graphics on the bottom bar of buttons. Please see the screenshots attached. It can happen every few minutes and as soon as I touch the screen it will revert to normal again.
Is this something that is likely to get fixed with an update or a hardware issue?
I can't find anything on the internet referring to the same problem but the sales guy in the local carphone warehouse has a nexus 4 as well and said his does the same :-/
Anybody know what is causing it.
Completely stock BTW oh and as you can see. Pressing the hardware buttons for a screenshot does not fix it. Only touching the screen.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
Wow.. thats not normal! I would look into RMA'ing that sucker!
You could try using a toolkit to reflash stock to see if that helps, however you will have to unlock the bootloader, flash stock rom and then relock bootloader, then you just go into settings and do a full reset to hide the developer options then you will be stock. The toolkit I use is this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2015469 and its awesome just follow the on screen prompts.
I'm quite sure that this is a software issue, since hardware issues can't be captured by screenshots obviously. I'd recommend flashing it with whatever you like and do a factory reset. You can restore all apps afterwards ofc (use Titanium Backup for example).
Best regards!

That only means that it isn't an issue with the physical screen. It could still be an issue with the GPU or other hardware, since various hardware is used to create that software image in the first place.
I have seen exactly this sort of picture posted in at least one thread before on here before, though that might be hard to find on a search.
I would also recommend reinstalling the ROM and if it still happens then it must be hardware. I strongly suspect that it is the hardware.
