Hi. I have had this Nexus 4 for about a month and it has does some strange things with the graphics on the bottom bar of buttons. Please see the screenshots attached. It can happen every few minutes and as soon as I touch the screen it will revert to normal again.
Is this something that is likely to get fixed with an update or a hardware issue?
I can't find anything on the internet referring to the same problem but the sales guy in the local carphone warehouse has a nexus 4 as well and said his does the same :-/
Anybody know what is causing it.
Completely stock BTW oh and as you can see. Pressing the hardware buttons for a screenshot does not fix it. Only touching the screen.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
Wow.. thats not normal! I would look into RMA'ing that sucker!
You could try using a toolkit to reflash stock to see if that helps, however you will have to unlock the bootloader, flash stock rom and then relock bootloader, then you just go into settings and do a full reset to hide the developer options then you will be stock. The toolkit I use is this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2015469 and its awesome just follow the on screen prompts.
I'm quite sure that this is a software issue, since hardware issues can't be captured by screenshots obviously. I'd recommend flashing it with whatever you like and do a factory reset. You can restore all apps afterwards ofc (use Titanium Backup for example).
Best regards!

That only means that it isn't an issue with the physical screen. It could still be an issue with the GPU or other hardware, since various hardware is used to create that software image in the first place.
I have seen exactly this sort of picture posted in at least one thread before on here before, though that might be hard to find on a search.
I would also recommend reinstalling the ROM and if it still happens then it must be hardware. I strongly suspect that it is the hardware.

Thanks for all the replies
I have now disabled HW overlays and it does seem to have fixed the issue (or at least made it far better, I have not noticed it since but it has only been an hour)
I will keep in eye on it for a bit and if it lasts cone back and change the title of the thread to solved.
Thanks for all the help guys.

hmmm, and the gpu just decides to screw up down there in a perfectly aligned rectangular shape that happens to resemble the navigationbar? i think thats unlikely.
gimpor, can you play gpu accelerated games? try please.
its probably googles weird 4 layer stuff. thats why disabling hw overlays fixes it. same guy that screwed up the kernel colors that merged it into 4.2.2 btw. : P
gimpor again,
hwoverlay is not permanent, a reboot unchecks it. try this
replace persist.hwc.mdpcomp.enable=true
with debug.mdpcomp.maxlayer=3
in your build.prop
or in the worst case persist.hwc.mdpcomp.enable=false
Its much better but still not fixed. Only done it once in about 8 hours whilst playing a solitaire game. I will try the other suggestions when I have decoded them into English :-/
I have not found any games that don't work yet, bad piggies etc. Seem to work okay. Would they be GPU accelerated?
Once again thanks for the assistance with this, it does get rather annoying when you show someone your phone and it's all garbled.
It still does this though :-/

I haven't found out anything further and it's still doing it but not as bad. It doesn't seem to happen to every stock phone so I'm guessing its hardware related, or at least something in software not playing well with this specific hardware. Mine is a 212 so they may have changed something on the later ones. I got it from Carphone warehouse on the UK as they were the only ones with stock. I had it changed already as the first one I got was DOA. I think it's going to have to go back if I can't get it fixed soon.

I remember reading a few days back about people having issues with screen tearing. My screen will display a symptom where it has a jagged line shoot across the center area of the screen real fast and then go away. I was wondering if anyone found a solution to that?

No progress has been made, yet. Some think it will be fixed in a software update. When I notified Google support of the issue, they thought it was a hardware problem, but if several people have the issue, maybe it's software.
I'm hoping it is fixed in a software update. That is literally the only issue I have with the tablet.

Yeah I hope so too, but I already have a replacement on the way. I have some other issues with mine though that I felt warranted getting a replacement.
Does the tearing happen to you all the time or just in certain apps? It only happens on mine when I'm playing music. It will show up for a split second as a quick horizontal line then disappear. The line appears in different areas of the screen each time. I notice it the most when it happens in Chrome, but I've seen it on the homescreen and in other apps as well.
Mine happens frequently throughout the ui. Xda app, chrome, everywhere really. If it is a software issue though there really is no point in exchanging. It seems to happen more frequently in an app with a light background.

I have this problem as well.. I only notice it in tapatalk though.. I'm not sure If its because I use tapatalk all the time or what..

So apparently it was a bad kernel that I was using that caused the problems. Flashed a completely stock build and the problems are gone. To the people that chimed in and said they had the issue, are you on a stock ROM or did you change that and the kernel?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium
I've noticed this, but it's only happened twice (so far), Once was whilst using chrome, the other time just sat on the homescreen. I'm currently using stock.
(Not too worried, just as long as it's not a line of pixels about to give up the ghost as some other people have had).

Happens to me on stock rom. My N7 is not rooted or unlocked.
Pretty sure this only happens when you force GPU acceleration. I had the same issue, turned it off, and never saw it again.
Of course I love GPU acceleration too much to leave it off, but a jagged line every once in a while is not a deal-breaker for me.

Glad it worked for you, but I don't have that option on nor any other's enabled in the development menu. Regardless, the issue persists.
Is there anyone else having this issue?
I received a replacement today, but I couldn't escape defects on that on that one either. I'm trying to figure out if I should hang in there for a fix on the screen tearing/horizontal line issue, or if I should just send both back and call it a day.

I just found this thread. I have the same issue. I'm on stock kernel, unlocked/rooted, and stock rom. I don't have GPU acceleration forced.
Any further ideas? Could be a driver issue.

People here think the screen flickering issue could be resolved in software, but I'm not sure about the issue we are having.
I might go through the unlocking process just to see if the horizontal line stuff happens on other roms/kernels.
I really hope it can be addressed in a software update. I just struck out on my 3rd nexus. All of them have screen defects. All have had other issues like creaking and slight screen lift, but those are a lot less of a problem to me. The original one is ok except for the horizontal line issue. My two replacements each have dead pixels and dust in central areas of the screen.
This is ending up to be a very tiring and disappointing pursuit.
If it's a software problem it's likely to be in the tegra3 proprietary driver blobs. If this is indeed the case, changing rom and/or kernel will make little difference (because they share the same blobs).
It might be possible to work around the issue outside of the blobs but its likely only nvidia can fix the root cause.

Hopefully someone at Google watches some of these threads. I have 2 nexus 7s with this issue. Thanks for trying to save me the time of trying a different ROM/kernel, but I might still try a CM10 build for kicks.
My first tablet had one dead pixel and it had this issue too. My second one is perfect except for this problem. It probably does have to do with the tegra 3. I hope its a software issue because this one is perfect except for that one problem. I'm not rooted nor unlocked and no force GPU rendering either. It only occurs on some apps with mine. Tapatalk, facebook and barely ever on chrome. I haven't seen it on any games or video nor on the home screen. There should be a place to report this to Google... I doubt they are searching through xda looking for every little problem. I've had this issue for a while and have been searching specifically for bit and just found it today. Also I never see it in horizontal mode.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
I have this issue too and I think it's likely to be a driver issue as it appearance seems random and sporadic in frequency, but it's always really hard to tell about these things.
In any I'm guessing some people just don't notice this issue and thus haven't really talked about it. But it sure is discomforting seeing it.
I seem to suffer from this too.. Everything is stock on mine, no mods, no flashes no unlocks.. It appears to be worse when its been on for a long time.. Wondering if its heat related?
Hello everyone,
Curious if anyone is having the same issue as me? I have tried multiple roms, stock, with and without kernels.
I am having some touch issues. Either I have to press harder then normal at times or multiple times for my press to register. Its getting quite annoying. Not sure if this is a defect or if i can modify something within the system files to make the screen more sensitive or if there is even a way to re-calibrate my sensors/screen?
Thank you in advance,
DFL

Has anyone decided if this is a hardware or software problem? I've started having the same issue. Turning off the screen sometimes fixes it for me but not always. A reboot always fixes it.
Like just now... I was playing Zenonia 2 and in the middle of a battle I suddenly couldn't get the touchscreen to respond. I hit power to lock the device and immediately tried to turn it back on with power again... but I couldn't even get the unlock screen to work. I set it down for about 30 seconds and when I tried again it was fine. I pulled the game back to the top and it worked fine.
When this happens the "soft" buttons (back, home, etc) always seem to work just fine, so I'm inclined to say it's really a software problem.
Running stock + root.
My thought is that it has to be a hardware issue, or if everyone with the issues is rooted than it could be from the root. My device has fantastic response however I am not rooted.

I got the same thing here and rebooting appears to fix it. Sometimes it is so bad that I cannot move icons from one screen to another.
Did you guys try flashing stock 4.1.1 using fastboot or the toolkit? If that does fix it then its probably hardware problem.

I have the same issue and mine isn't rooted yet so I don't think it is an issue with that. A wipe of the device doesn't help but a reboot usually does. This is my second N7 as the first was a warranty replacement for the headphone jack issue. The first never had the issue so I think it is an issue that should be addressed. I am outside my 14 days so I might have to go through Asus now.
---------- Post added at 01:23 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:50 PM ----------
For what it is worth, I just called Google and they are going to send me a new one. The lady that assisted me stated that she has had a few complaints with this issue and that they just replace it. N7 #3 should be on the way in a couple days. For some reason she said that the device wasn't set up properly in my profile so it will add a couple days to the process because of the long weekend.
Not a big deal. I have lived with it for a while now. At least they appear to be taking care of it and I wasn't transferred to Asus. At least yet.
Hello every one. This bug has been present since my phone did its first boot. Apparently, when my keyboard retracts or disappears after I'm done typing, it leaves a big white block behind it for a few seconds. You can try using the Facebook app. Search up a name, but don't click on any one. Then hit the back/down key. (Software buttons). If you guys don't have any problems, what are your suggestions? I tried asking this on the "help" thread, but no one would answer me. Thanks!

I have a completely stock, unrooted Nexus 4 that I received 2/4/13. I've been having some strange display hiccups pretty much since I got it, and they seem to occur on any part of the screen. Sometimes it will occur as a square in the upper left section of the screen, other times it will be a mess of static at the bottom. Sometimes text entry will either turn all black, or it will disappear altogether. In some of the screen shots, you will notice that I am using an app called Screen Filter to decrease screen brightness. However, the display glitch occurs when I am not using Screen Filter as well. I was wondering if anyone else was having these problems? I'm considering RMAing my phone for a new one.

Any one else have a jittery screen? Occasionally my screen seems to glitch and like... I don't know... Fizzle to the right kind of and then returns to normal. Is this a known issue? Any one else have the issue I describe? I can't tell if it's the phone or the firmware (Stock), and if resetting it will work out or not. That started happening to me too; I just thought it was an app freaking out. Every now and then it just jiggles left and right, as if it were shaking. Heck, I even had it happen in TWRP w/ Safestrap when doing a backup.
You have me worried about my own device now, lol.

Mine does it as well. Looks similar to how the screen shakes when you enter the screen lock password incorrectly but seems to be random. Most likely a software issue.

Yeah, but, it happens way too much for it to be acceptable or normal. Simple as that, my phone should not be twitching.
It went from happening once or twice every other day, to happening more than ten to twenty times a day. That's unnecessary, and unbelievably annoying.

Happens to me as well, both at the lock screen and when using the phone, ( like browsing the internet) Most likely software related and not something to worry about
Mine does it too, seems to be common with this device.
I would assume firmware too, due to the above report of it happening in recovery.
It should still be brought to Motorola's attention in my opinion. It seems to be getting worse on my device though.

Yeah my frequency is increasing as well here, and I'm thinking it's firmware / hardware, not software. Driver issue maybe? But I'm thinking it's mostly hardware related since most seem not to be having the issue we have, leading me to believe it's a manufacturer's defect
