So Long. It's Been Fun - HD2 General

After 15 months with my HD2 (99% positive), I have decided to move on. I knew it would come at some time, but I had not expected to move until next year. When AT&T (my carrier since 1992) came out with two Android, LTE-capable phones with better screens, faster processors, etc., I decided it was time to give up on Windows Mobile 6 and try Android. I know a lot of you have already swapped out WM for Android on the HD2, but I stayed with WM because I had a lot of apps that I still used from my old PDA days. Also, the HD2 on AT&T was slow because I could get only Edge/2G speeds. So, it was time to go.
However, my HD2 will remain in use at least for a while. I am not sure yet I can find good Android apps as replacements for some of my WM apps. It still works with WiFi. I have a good PDA now.
Thanks for all the advice I found here. It's been a good experience. Now, I will be over at the HTC Vivid forum.
Good luck to all.

Out of curiosity, what apps do you miss?

Good luck to you my friend

I have a genealogy program that is very good. I have not yet found an Android genealogy program that matches it, although I will be testing some. I have a number of books purchased for now obsolete readers (MS Reader, eReader) that I don't want to re-purchase from B&N or Amazon. I use Laridian's PocketBible, but the developer is working on an Android version. I like mapping programs that don't require me to have wireless access all the time. I've got to find Andrioid replacements for a couple of good topo map programs.
I suspect I will find replacements for the programs I use the most, but it will take time. It's an adjustment going to Android after 6-7 years of Windows Mobile programs on PDAs and the HD2.

jealous...i'm stuck with mine til feb.
being a broke (bills are more important than buying a $600 phone every 4 weeks) smartphone owner has caused my unfortunate union to go 2 full years with the most irritating experience 87% of the time.
yeah, sd droid...but becomes useless (on my phone) after a few days. fc is bs!
nand? i have a 2 year w/insurance, not gonna risk it thanks.
I still have a fave5 plan, w/5gb, and unlimited talk/text for the same price as the new 2gb plans w/1000 min talk unlimited text, so month to month is out
as much as i avoided the bubblegum feel of droid and defend wm, this is where i pour gas on the leo and send it to hell.
well, in feb. that is.
pos [email protected] dog phone...
anyway, congrats on bailing the once hoppin' leo forums!

Good luck and have fun and always a broad bandwith with your new device

Thanks Bruce, for what its worth I keep WM installed purely for TomTom, but as I've not opened it in six months, I'm thinking of NANDing it. To the other guy who posted negatively about SD builds, search the SD forum for "motorman evo black blue remix". Its an oldy but a goody. I used it for 8 months with barely ever an FC or a restart (in fact my phone would be on for weeks before I even bothered the restart it manually). I've recently changed to a "Desire Z" build, which is less stable but gives me landscape sense. Anyway, try that first ROM for a few months, I believe it won't disappoint

thank you, i will try it!
i LOVE how my leo behaves w/sd droid (EVERYTHING WORKS SMOOOOOTHLY!!!) so when they go buggy i get overly cranky.
goodness, is wm 6.5 that AWFUL that everything else works flawlessly when 6.5 chokes on the best phone ever made?!?
i am eyeballing the amaze...no early adopting for me, not after this!

Whoops I said motorman, and I meant motoman.

Anyone swapping his Touch HD for HTC hero?

Just wondering? I'm playing with the thought of selling my Touch HD. Getting a bit tired of Windows Mobile. Anyone else?
But I'm asking myself, if I can live with the smaller screen and lower resolution?
Im thinking of doing the exact same and my main concerns are screen size and lack of radio. The radio, which i don't use that often, i can overcome by using web radio. But the screen size and resolution is making me consider it carefully.
I've only been using windows mobile for about 6 months but im getting bored. I've looked at all the apps i use and theirs alternatives available on android for all of them.
Has anyone here swapped WinMo for Android?

I did. I have used winmob for 9 years :S Seriously.
I moved to Android Hero on release day last week.
I sent the Android back on Monday and am back on winmob.
There are (currently) apps and 'things' that Android cannot do to the same quality as winmob. I don't for a minute think that situation will be like that forever, but, atm, Satnav is not as good on Android. Syncing is not as good on Android. I missed the hardware keyboard (not a prob for an ex-touch HD user of course )

HTC Sync is not the best.. well.. its crap.
I sync with Googlemail though, always have and then I have an app on my computer which syncs with Outlook and Googlemail, so don't need to plug the phone in, I have no issues!
CoPilot is a good piece of kit, IF you have bought it. The pirate versions have many many flaws in it, so I presume this is what you mean by that? Obviously TomTom has been around a bit longer so had many years to get its quirks out of its system, I remember it on Symbian and my old XDA II, it was pants then, but nice now.
Just moved from many years on WinMo to Android and I'll give it that, its different. There are some things it won't do as good as a WinMo device, but other things it will excel on. But lets face it, its different, its not WinMo, its not Apple, hence why I want it, something different.
Not everyone will want it, but I've had a Touch HD and moved to a TP2 (0.2" screen difference) then moved to this and its fine, screen size is spot on for me, no complaints at all.
I bought Copilot on Friday night and tested it on a purely vanilla Android config. Nothing else installed. It crashed each time I exited. It also did not have my second tested postcode in it. Thankfully the refund function on Android marketplace worked very well, otherwise that would have been another £25.99 wasted.
More serious was the crashing though. Just kept locking up when I exited the app.
I too run Outlook sync>googlemail on my PC. But, for contracts this is a convoluted process of exporting to a .csv > gmail. It's a kludge and not good. The calendar via gmail syncs well but not the contacts. Pretty basic stuff and should be resolved at first hit and capable locally.
Under Vista, HTC sync hardly works, it's pointless being there. All these issues are exactly why apple is sewing up the market. Their stuff is much more user friendly. I have never had an iphone and probably never will, but fundamental issues that affect the user experience such as the ability to sync are essential for the success of a phone. As I was used to Activesync in Winmob land and that worked seamlessly, why would anyone struggle with an equivalent that doesn't work?
Hero displays a great insight to the future of open phone OSs. It's really exciting to experience. When the flaws are resolved I will be back on board for sure
My main problem is the size of the on-screen keyboard. I've been using palm-held devices to write for years now, so the keys on the Hero are just too damned small. If an Android handset came out with a display the same size as the HD, I would be very tempted. If there's an application on the Market that lets you actually edit Word-type files...

I presume you include your Pocket PC experience with that as WM has only be out six
ive been using windows since the original SPV. I've pretty much had every device ever released from HTC. Just sold my HD and got the Hero - I dont think I will be going back to windows again - unless something spectacular happens in Windows 7!

Yep, PPC as well as. I am pwoppa old school (just old really!)
I always had a soft spot for the SP5. I still have one of those and it gets use when I am on a night out, ie, more portable but still carrying the details I need.
Thats the way I feel winwiz, so do other people I know fortunate enough to have the G1.
I have been using a PDA since Apple's newton days and progressed to my first PocketPC in 2000 (Compaq) and on to my first WM device which was the SPV M600 (HTC Prophet) which is still in use now. The Trinity was next SPV M700 (also still in use) and then last year I got a Hong Kong version of the Diamond.
During my time with these devices the experience has nearly been the same thanks to the user interface. The Hero and android is a welcome change, although there are things I will miss with WM - I look forward to the further developments of the Android OS and the missing things with WM will soon appear in one form or another.

That is for sure. These are exciting times.
They need a direct sync for Outlook Contacts, call me crazy but I don't trust Google with my contact data and personally I don't like anyone else sharing my contact information with them or anyone else. Once you give them that data for free it's theirs, I'm not looking for complete anonymity but sharing my contact information is just a step away from giving them my checkbook, tax information and SSN. They have a really cool service and it's "free"... too bad people aren't taking account of what they are actually paying.
Rant /off
I am looking very seriously at getting a Hero though, I've had the Star Trek for quite a few years... (got it running WM6.1 now) and while cool. I'm looking forward to messing with Andriod and seeing what happens with the development of Andriod Apps/Utils in the community.
i had the touch hd and tytn 2 and they are all top notch phones....for me tho winmo phones are very precise in getting whatver you want done fast and efficeintly but they lack and excitement or fun while using them. hero i feel has just about put the two together making it enjoyable but efficient. dnt think i could go back to winmo and be happy about it....... the difference in screen size for me isnt really an issue i get on fine with smaller and th ehtc hero offers 3 different keyboard layouts for those who are used to a hard keyboard. obviously personal opinion differs but mines thumbs up to android......give it a go.....you only live once!

I was using 4 HTC WM smartphones over the past years. i got bored after a month with my htc diamond so i sold it and buyed a nokia e71 (symbian). Used it till now. In a few days my HTC Hero will be delivered.
I am certain that Android and HTC fit together very good and its getting the only competitive platform beside the iphone os.

Ok, screen size is my main apprehension. If that works out, maybe I'm going to get a hero.
I have a Touch HD and have been considering a switch to Hero. The main thing that stops me is that I rely on a couple of Java apps that run under Winmo but wont run on Hero. For the rest, I think the trade offs are probably worth it.
Rip HD. Sort of.
Just got my Hero(HD's going to the wife) and like any other device out there at the moment(and probably forever, sadly) it is not perfect. Having said that, I don't think I'll miss my HD that much.
That's exactly what i've done. Sold my hd and now waiting for my hero to arrive - hopefully tomorrow. Then il report back to say If I think it was worth it.
I much prefer the look of android tho.
I'm in the same boat as you guys - thinking about trading my HD in for a Hero. As soon as I saw how good Android was, I had been desperately hoping someone would port Android to the HD, but that as it doesn't look like that will happen now, I think I might take the plunge for a Hero.
Of course, like all of you, my main concerns are with the screen, and also the on screen keyboard. I'm using FingeKeyboard 2.1 on WM and it's fantastic, I doubt HTCs keyboard on the Hero will come close.
That said, I'm bored of winmo, and I organise everything online through google anyway, so switching to Android seems to make sense. I also like the idea of an app store, and whilst MS is slowly working on that, I'd rather have something run by google instead of MS.
Guess I should take the plunge!

Htc Hd2 bye bye

Well after 5 months with this baby I finally decide to sale it, I was one of those who purchase it when they just appear on the market past December.
I got the pink spot, wish was practically solve by HTC also and worst bug I got was distortion sound with echo plus some times unable to rise the volume.
Also scrolling contacts was very tricky, I spend few months in how to find a way around with it and thanks to xda and you users, I learn a lot about WM
En plus so many crashes, when ever I push my phone to his limits ones he got hot he will crash.
Well during five months I learn to live with it I ask him the minimum and under that circumstances he would not crash
So what I got today day is a since 2 days new Htc Desire and so far fantastic! I been pushing this new baby to his limits and no one single crash, the sound is ok plus I can do a million things I could no do with the HD2
By the way I bought the Piel Frama case Htc Hd2 here in Xpancys Hong kong and I wont be able to use it, if some one there who happens to live in Shenzhen or HK I am almost giving it away paid 60 euros want 20 mint conditions
I haven't fallow much whats up with the hd2 lately, but I am sure many new things have change thanks to xda, so I am sure you are all enjoying your phone as much I did even he gave me some headaches

Good bye for HD2 section. Hope this will be the last time you are here. Way too many thread like this.
I played with Desire and it's really boring, and even sluggish when I just slide some page on Sense, press a couple of apps include web browser. Browser speed quite good but not as good as it is advertised, the screen as well.
I can say to u that HD2 can do million things that Desire cant. My HD2 never crashed for normal day usage, only crashed if I install stuffs at my own risks. And it never gave me headaches, just gave me curiousity of what I can do more.
Anyway, good luck and wish u happy with ur choice this time.

so your phone is a guy?
This is my question - all of you out there who know that windows mobile 6.5 is a dead os for lack of a better term and also know that the development for apps for it is going to taper and die off at some point, I'd like to know what exactly is keeping you with a dated OS on a high end phone that will eventually hit a brick wall if it hasn't already with regards what it can do and what the OS will let it accomplish.
I just feel that the phone is such a waste with being limited to wm 6.5 yet having the power to do so much more. Frustrating. I was one of those who did the daily normal usage thing and it couldn't keep its wits about it. Not fun.

Why get an HD2? Because it can email, surf, navigate, game, shoot video and take pictures, take notes, create documents, play music and videos, other stuff I cant think of - and make phone calls too in a slim, stylish, good looking power-packed form that represents the state of the art of current WM phones, why would anyone NOT get an HD2?
My HD2 was with me this weekend on a trip to Minneapolis, stopped over in Chicago, no free wifi so I tethered my laptop wirelessly, in MN connected it to my laptop again iwth my cable and played the music on my storage card, used it to wake me up next day to get to the airport on time, in between made some calls, got my email, and it worked perfectly. I never once felt I needed some "app" to make my device more useful, it all just worked. Shame you cant see beyond the "apps" but as far as Im concerned, its far, far from a dead end.
i just bought my telstra hd2 and so far have no problems. i bought it knowing that wm 6.5 is some what a dying breed but still has lots of apps and uses. i do believe that others will start pulling out of developing apps for wm 6.5, just like skype and adobe.
its ashame that the hd2 might not be upgradable to wm 7 but the dev out here are great and may make things happen.
i dont care too much about android but it would be nice to have this option for newers apps and so hopefully when my hd2 gets boring, the port of android may be feasable. i would rather like to see a webos port over android tho.
good luck with your new phone.

Lol I am not poor, withing the past 300 days I bought 1 nokia 5800, 2 nokia 97,1 nokia 900 wish i send back the day after and finally since 2 days 1 Htc Desire
So I think to have some experience with mobile phones, they all have the good and the wrongs even desire has one thing that I don't like Cannot select and copy text of your incoming sms....! The only work around is forward and then you can work on the text.
And yes I am hunting the no bugs, super ultrasonic mobile pone hope to get it before 2020 lol
my HD2 is also a guy with the leathercase my HD2 looks like an
Hellsangels-Member
but come on ... stop this stupid postings about our new and FU*KING-GREAT devices like iphone ...
Good Luck
..with your Desire..
But i think some guys, like you, miss the point!
Devices like the Androis's/AlppleOs's are Phones with extra's, so you can call it
"Smartphone"
The HD2 is a Smartphone with extra's , so you can call it "PocketPc/PDA"
BTW: The HD2 is something between PPC and Smartphone and this
is exactly what i've searched for.
If i wan't to use a "phone" i take
my "Nokia e66" (it also have a very good office sync and similar funktions to the HD2 - Wlan,Gps,OfficeTools) and i will be happy.
Otherwise i want to use a big f***ing 4,3" touchscreen (with WM6.5) and i'm much more happier.
So..please.... if you don't want to use your HD2.. sell it and shut up.
PS: the Desire is a very nice phone, too!!

Should I get the HD2?

Hi folks,
in a few months I am able to extend my Vodafone Business contract and get the HD2. Currently I own a Touch Diamond and am finally VERY satisfied (after trying several ROMs for 6 months).
I still have some doubts about the HD2, I hope you can help me here:
1. Scratch-resistance of the display and the case.
I heard that the display itself is made of glass. For my diamond, I have a screen protector and a black Bugatti pouch. No scratches till now. So should I even use a pouch/screen protector, or is there no need for it? I am no big fan of those InvisibleShield solutions.
2. Availability and (especially) quality of custom ROMs.
Vodafone ROMs are made to be backed up (just in case of warranty) and then to be deleted. Any good and fast ROMs out there which basically provide an "upgraded stock experience"?
3. microSD
There is one delivered with the phone, but I could not find the size of the storage.
4. Landscape typing
Is it possible (without any greater hacks) to send SMS in landscape-mode? For the Diamond, I always use the standard portrait mode, but I once typed in landscape on an iPhone (phone itself: yuck, but the typing was great).
Thanks so far, I hope that you can help a potential HD2-owner
Regards
I use a gel case for the back, leaving the screen exposed and never had problems with scratching; nor worried about it being scratched unlike previous phones ive owned.
I believe it will be a 2GB microSD
Rotate the phone and it will allow typing in SMS screen natively.
in all honesty since you are "very happy" with your diamond, and still gave a few months to run, I'd wait and see what is around closer to the time. the hd2 is great, but its not a day to day phone, its a tinkeres delight, but as a phone its more like a work in progress. (it auto phoned my boss last friday just because I pulled the earphone jack out, it doesn't mute the fm radio when you get texts so you miss them, reception stability in standby is hit and miss..... )
if you want a great grownups toy, do it, if you want a phone, stock with what you are happy with for now.i

While this is true, I'm also pretty certain that HTC will not be pumping out anymore Windows Mobile devices of this caliber. Their next HD2-like successor will be running Windows Phone 7 and not Windows Mobile. This is how they'll get people to pick up the newer OS in the future.
So if you like Windows Mobile for Windows Mobile and want to stick with this OS, I think the HD2 will remain in the limelight for quite some time.

very true, the tyraosaurus rex of the 6.x line, hehe
i have now had my HD2 since it got released.. and i agree with the above. It's a great toy but not a very stable user experience i have tried every single ROM out there and still not exited about this phone:...
i have just ordered the desire wich i find to be a much better phone, but with a smaller screen im afraid
when htc evo comes to Europa i will change phone again
i have been a long time windows mobile user, but im done with that now.. i have owned almost 30 phones and have even had an iphone 3g. my favorite OS i must say is android... user experience, stability, and productivity wise, android wins in my book..
in some way i hate to say it cause windows mobile has served me good for a lot of years!
Well, thanks for all the replies!
I won't buy it right away but will do so in the next 2-3 months.
But then it has to be very reliable for the next two years, since I will be traveling a lot (Europe and USA)
For the time being, I will have a look at other phones as well.
I have the US Tmo version and I am going to return it tomorrow if they still let me (not sure if I am still within the remorse period), I tried really hard to fall in love with winmo again (was an avid Tilt user) but it just doesn't cut it for me anymore
I have a 1.66 WWE Stock ROM and 2.10 radio and I'm not having any problems at all. I don't get why people always say HD2 is unstable. The only problems I'm encountering is what to do next because my HD2 is already running perfectly.

Hi folks,
in a few months I am able to extend my Vodafone Business contract and get the HD2.
Regards

I have to agree with some of the things people are saying in this thread. Way too many people are attracted to the Hd2 because of the massive display, only to be disappointed because "it doesn't work" <-- Laughing at iphone users if you know what I mean.
Unless you are ready to handle a WinMo device, don't get the HD2. It requires too much tinkering in order to make it personally "YOURS" - and I'm not talking about personalization via pages upon pages of square iconic apps. *AHEM.
Regarding your questions:
1) I've used a vikuiti screen protector and have absolutely zero regrets. I am super picky when it comes to protecting my HD2 (going thru so many SP) so I hope you understand how much I crown this screen protector. Search my threads. I made a huge review about it.
2) Custom ROMS are always available- All the time. I use CleanEX mainly because gavin is an awesome and very active cook. He does a lot of the background stuff for CleanEX and when he release a ROM, ****, its awesome.
You should try it beta ROM, code named "AWESOMENESS" (all in caps)
3) Im using a 16GB class 6. Nothing but pure pleasure and speed when loading music or documents or games from the SD card. I had a 16Gb class 4. I noticed no difference in terms of speed.
4) typing in general, in sense UI can sometimes be laggy. Like you press an "A" and it does appear until a very split second later. But those laddyness are random. There have been lots of tweaks here and there to improve them. I never bothered, but they exist. I can live with the laggyness but I use SWYPE which has NO laggyness for me at all. =P
The problems I encountered were due to 3rd party software I installed or registry edits I made. After hard resetting phone and carefully choosing (and listing) the apps I install there are no major bugs to report.
Using only stock ROM so far, didn't find the need to risk a custom ROM yet.

That was the most useful post, thanks!
Well, basically it is the same as with the Diamond in the beginning: Requires some time to fiddle out all the settings, but then works like a charm. I have the Diamond for one and a half years now and it works perfectly. I even UC'ed mine to have the old data on it faster after flashing new ROMS.
People who complain that "it does't work" should get an iPhone imho, since everything works out of the box there.
I considered getting a phone with Android or a propietary solution (e.g. Nokia), but there is hardly anything to configure (and my beloved TomTom won't run). Will try getting my hands on the HD2 in the next weeks, to get a real opinion about it.
Thanks again!
Excuse me since I will give my point of view withot reading the entire thread.
I myself had HTC Diamond before I used an Iphone for over 3 years, the experiance between the two phones(Diamond vs HD2)is from sky to earth (I sold back the Diamond after using it for couple of days),if you have the time to customize it a bit,not necessarily ROM changing,Im on stock 1.6xx,I say you can easily fall in love with it,I pretty much can do anything with it, within my interest. Most of the problem comes after installing not so much tested 3rd party applications.
BTW I use it as my daily device and I had no such problems as mentioned in some of the posts above, may be just a new WM user beginners Luck!!
hagba, it was the same when the Diamod came out: New apps striving to be tested. Bugs everywhere. Good coders everywhere, too. So the bugs vanished after a few months.
And as I said, I will wait a few months until I get the phone, so I hope the most crucial bugs will be gone until then.
Thanks for sharing your opinion!
mines got the 1.66 rom and 2.07 radio direct from HTC......very stable.
I've had many winmo phones (mda compact/m600/kaiser/xperia x1) but the HD2 is the daddy!
Get one and you'll find it does everything your diamond will do......just faster and better!

I dont mean just software-wise but more hardwarewise too,so much differance between resistive and capacitive as well as the size of the screens, however prepare your self for a pleasent surprise if you ever decide to get the HD2,more so that you are familiar with the WM and its modding process.
I have had my HD2 for 4 months now. I use it everyday for business. works flawlessly, and I'm a heavy user. lots of phonecalls, emails etc. use it as a wireless router or bluetooth PAN when I'm away on business. I have never once had the phone crash. I'm still running stock 1.66 ROM. I would definitely recommend this phone.
No crash sounds good - oh lord, what have I lost data on the Diamond based on buggy ROMs
But I will have to switch ROMs at least away from the stock one, Vodafone always has to have something special there.

[Q] Are you sick of Android yet

I have tried most of the Android versions over the past few months and have donated a coffee for several of my favorites, but Android just isn't for me.
I have an idea most of the participants in the Android forums already are chomping at the bit for NAND, but I wonder how many closet WinMo users still lurk.
I almost never have to deal with Reboot android...whereas in Winmo...a constant battle...
I'm lovin' Android, and it's only getting better, but I'm eagerly waiting WP7 on HD2. I really hope that day comes because WP7 and Android 2.2/3.0 on the same phone is INSANE!!
Because I have nothing but sarcasm to say I will simply say no.

Our HD2's hardkey won't last long
To the contrary, I am growing more and more fond of android. Rarely do I miss WinMo. Android meets all of my business needs and has allowed my to completely remove WM from any use at all. I am looking forward to a NAND flash and to future developments on the Android platform.

I trew the tower
I bought another phone already.
I couln't wait any more for NAND, I went for the G2, last saturday, I kinda miss my big screen. but I like the battery life in the G2, so far 2 days and it keeps going.
The reason I left the HD2 is because i was spending too much time trying to make android work 100%.
There is so many reasons I won't ever use Winmo again. I could write a book.
Even a simple things like set a password if the phone is not used for 1 hour are not correct, the device ask and ask the password every time it wakes up in any Rom.
I'll still wait for Android Nand, and will donate more when it is done.
Best regards
-Rober
by they way now that I have another phone, I'm trying to check the standby time of the HD2. I'll let you know guys,
yes, android on HD2 is broken and I don't think even NAND will fix it. I really don't want to downgrade screens but if the mytouch comes out and android is still unusable then i'll probably switch.
Android broken on HD2? I have a premature flash which is fixed from what I understand, and blurry MMS, which also has a fix. Just waiting for the next build. Otherwise, not broken.
Winmo? Froze every hour on the hour. Even with flashed ROMS. SBP shell lasted a few days till it slowed to a crawl.

I came from preordering the G1...to the MT3G...went to an iPhone 3G (sorry...had to see what the buzz was about)...to a Nexus One...to the HD2
I am very comfortable with Android and what it can do (though I never got into the development part...my career is testing software) I would say that I have seen much more incomplete software than the Android that we have.
The only reason I stood in line in March to buy my HD2 was because I knew that it would have Android sooner or later.
I never even really used my HD2 until early July when Darkstone first put out a Android build that didnt greenscreen after 2 minutes...I always used my Nexus as my daily driver. I could never get the hang of WinMo...even using good cooked ROMs like NRG and Kumar...along with CHT and SPB MS, it still felt very uncomfortable to move around in.
Am I tired of it? No way...I have not booted into WInMo since Darkstones first Desire build (except to upgrade ROM/Radio stuff), my Nexus has now taken its place in the closet and my HD2 is now my daily driver.
The only thing I'm sick of is the touchscreen freezes so I've had to completely remove all my sensors files to stay sane, fortunately other than that I'm content with Android at the moment and I'm one of the many who can't wait for NAND.
no offense but screen turn on lag one every build + data connection drops along with the occasional complete cell signal drop = broken and unless the devs can fix these things the HD2 will never go a single day without causing the user a headache in Android. BTW lol at t-mo and HTC bending the consumer over by rereleasing the HD2 as the HD7... slick move. That along with not releasing a 4.3" screen phone with android to compete with the HD7 is some great business practice.
The reason I sold my Android based Galaxy S was because I knew the HD2 and XDA developers was the ultimate team...
90% of the time I run Android now as it allows complete cloud syncing with my google account, facebook and online usage with flash is easy and nice to use.
the small remainder of the time I will use Windows mobile now for some of the applications in particular older apps like memory map navigator, pocket birds guides and the rest of the series and the camera is still better in Windows mobile.
I like the fact I have two devices in one, and later on XDA are bound to bring us Windows 7 on the HD2 which I will test also, what with NAND, Windows 7 and more updates and builds to test than any other device, the HD2 for me is the only device to own.
Oh yes and it runs Android slicker and smoother than my Samsung Galaxy S ever did...

I guess I've been spoiled for months. I've never been happier with my hd2. Im getting 12hrs of heavy use. No freezing, or drops in data. Nothing. The only time I need to restart is if I'd like to try something new. Android on my HD2 is perfect and not broken. Never been happier and couldn't possibly think about downgrading to something else.

Anyone stumble on to the HD2?

Was curious if anyone bought an HD2 without knowing it's potential.I was looking at adding lines to my T-Mobile account (thanks to family members stupidity). I browsed online at my free phone options (per line) and went with the highest priced. Almost changed my mind but after being told this phone would no longer be available in 3 hours I went for it. Thinking I got a great deal after misreading the os, I couldn't wait till my android phone arrived. Upon booting I about smashed the phone through my brain. Thanks to wm6.5 lack of wow factor I stumbled upon xda. Thanks to playing angry birds on a friends phone and the humility of admitting his android os was superior I picked apart xda and had an SD version by morning with angry birds installed. The joy derived from one upping him can't be described. All the devs and dedicated owners have my appreciation. Without the devs creating so diligently and xda members continued testing I would have hated this phone.

Not in the same way you did but I did stumble upon the HD2 in a way.
I knew it came with WM6.5 but I also knew I could load Android on it as a dual boot...little did I know the NAND version was so close behind and now WP7 is almost a lock, along with Unbuntu and Meego....this phone is just a crazy hackers dream...
I use hackers loosely when I talk about myself...it's more that I can follow directions good then hack anything...
THE DEV's ROCK...!!!!
A friend of my wife got it and was talking about how nice it was so I decided to try it. Didn't really stumble on it but I also hadn't used WM prior to that. Before it was BlackBerry or the Sidekick.
i bought the phone off my friend's friend for 120 bucks in a heartbeat because it's a htc and it's almost brand new before knowing anything about this phone. my friend's friend is a girl, she don't know anything about this phone also, she bought the phone with t-mousa contract about 2 months ago. the only reason she told me she don't like this phone is b/c the stock winmo 6.5 doesnt show any asian languages and inputs. lol (she is asian.) so she got herself a samsung galaxy S (paying full retail price) and sell this hd2 to me. thanks to xda, i flashed a nand andriod on it and running smooth, everything working and all. (next time i run into her, i should show her my phone and laugh at her...lol...sign )
a while back i was using a dopod 7500. i outgrew the size factor and thus changed to a htc touch pro2. after like a month or two of reading around the xda site, i noticed how powerful and versatile the hd2 was....that's where the regret came in =) but fortunately my touch pro 2 was stolen in my former place of work. my wife, bless her, has always made sure we had home and contents insurance. that was when i immediately opted for a hd2 as a replacement. the insurance guy was offering a htc mozart (running w7). i specifically wanted the hd2 because it was on top of the ladder in terms of wm devices. plus i also knew i could load android into the unit. and i was reading earlier on that w7 could eventually be cracked and loaded as well (which has now happened). so, got my hd2 and have never been more pleased. it's now running android and it's exceeded my expectations.
I previously had the HD1 which I loved because of hardware ans the screen size then when HD2 was released I was like ...WOW!
I really didnt mind Windows Mobile, been using it for years, had plenty of apps but decided to try Android on blackstone (HD1) just because I could
After trying Android on the HD1 I slowy started using it more and more untill I found myself booting into it every time I turned on my phone. This lead to me using a bootloader to automatically starting it when powering on and then ultimatley getting rid of WinMo all together and flashing to NAND in HD2.
I now have WP7 on NAND and Android on SD but will put WP7 on SD if/when its possible as Android is my main OS. Sorry if that went a bit off topic, I didnt really stumble across HD2 I knew I wanted it because it was the big brother to my HD1.
To me the HD2 is as still top of teh range now as it was back then and is still up there with the top spec phones. I dont think I will be retiring this phone for at least another year or two unless something as versatile comes along.
Completely agree this is by far the best phone I've owned.I'll keep it till it dies, and may get an unopened 2nd for that sad day.

Just saw this thread and i felt completely identified. Six month ago a friend of mine was able to acquire me a new mobile phone through his company. So I ask him for a HTC Legend, that was the one that I liked the most. What he finally got me was a HD2, and I remember I was disappointed, I wanted an android phone.
But since I found XDA I am so happy with my HD2 that I actually can't believe it's true.
That's my story about how I stumbled with the best and most vesatile phone on the market. I am a lucky man. Don't you think?
(Sorry for my bad english).
