[Q] What is the best alternative keyboard for nook touch? - Nook Touch General

Hi
What is the best alternative keyboard for nook touch?
Thanks

I try a lot of keybords today. Two works fine (much better than nook's keyboard):
1. Go Keyboard
cons: You can't see any word in setings page (eink compatibility I guess)
2. Swiftkey
cons: Annoying preview when press keys and you can't turn it off.

Sorry for resurrecting this thread, but I just got a chance to experiment a bit more with GO Keyboard. Yeah, it totally sucks that you can't see ANY text on the Settings page..... and I'd kill to find out how to shut off the key preview (upon key presses). Love the keyboard but it gets sooooo messy when preview is on.
Kudos to anyone who knows which item in the settings list shuts it off!

I installed GO keyboard on my phone so I can see the text in the settings from there. Key preview, popup, is in Display settings (Tv/ square with chainwheel symbol), and than fourth setting from the bottom.
To install new languages you can just download them from market and than switch directly from the keyboard.

Thanks for noticing this thread AND helping me out with perfect instructions! Much obliged!

Is there a chance someone with Go Keyboard on their phone could post screenshots or a list of the menus? I've been blindly checking and unchecking to change things which is not working too well.

Hacker Keyboard
I tried GO Keyboard, but it had a little too much animation for my liking. I did a bit of Googling, and I found Hacker's Keyboard. The version on the Market requires a newer version of Android than we have on the Nook, but I found an apk here: http://code.google.com/p/hackerskeyboard/issues/detail?id=57 that is redone for 2.1. Been running it for a day now, and it seems to work great.

Hacker's Keyboard works realy nice. Very usefull for terminal app
Thanks

yes, hacker's keyboard seems to be the best for nook. unfortunately it is dark. It would be great to have white skin (similar to standard nook keyboard).

For those who have been able to install Hackers Keyboard, could you give a rundown on how you did it?
I copied it to /system/app, rebooted, and installed it but it still does not show up as a choice in keyboard selection in Nook Color Tools.
I installed the version from the above post.
Thank you

Delete that file from system, reboot, install as normal apk, then copy the installed apk from data/app to system/app, reboot. Then if apk is ok it will work.

Awesome, that worked!
I was copy/paste-ing the wrong apk.
Thank you

Hackers Keyboard works great for me.
I had trouble when in google talk app as it displayed only 2/3 of my keyboard but installed hackers keyboard and now it works fine
Hackers keyboard on android market wont work because its for 2.3+ android version but they made version for 2.1.
To install Hackers Keyboard:
I can't paste URLs links yet (dont have 8 posts) so go that link mentioned above and find comment # 8th, then download attached file "hkeyboard.apk" and:
1. plug in ur nook to pc
2. copy the hkeyboard.apk file somwhere on ur nook
3. unplug
4. install it normally (find and just run the file)
5. open a file manager that let u access root folder and let u see system files (i used "Root Browser")
6. go to /data/app (if it says the folder is empty u have to enable system files preview)
7. copy installed app (it should be somwhere on the bottom on the list)
8. go to system/app
9. paste the file
10. dont run the app yet! if you do uninstall it and go to point 1
11. reboot (turn off completly and power back on)
12. run the app and do what they ask u to do or (prefered way) go to Nook Color Tools (u should have it preinstalled when rooting) and change ur keyboard to hackers keyboard
13.done
14. if u want to go back go to old keyboard or any else Nook color Tools and change the keyboard
-------------------------------------------
Go keyboard works as well (to install do the same operations as mentioned above) but its to flashy and u dont see the text in preferences (u have to install it on ur phone and then go back and forth to see where u are).
BTW is there a way to see the text in Go Keyboard preference window? ive discovered that in some apps this happens to, is there an app for it? xD
PS Damn, my Nook just died after 3 days of intense usage
Where's my promised 2 months? ;O
2h hours left for it to eat up... gotta do something else for next 2h ;(

Well, looks like it's time for me to try experimenting with the framework-res.apk

If it helps: that white unreadable text also appear in xda app when changing the theme to dark. The whole forum is then unreadable...
Sent from my NOOK STR using XDA

Try getting the android sdk and installing go keyboard on that. You can then see the text in there, and compare it to your nook.
Do that until Googie comes back with a new framework file.

Hackerskeyboard works like a charm. ;]
code[dot]google[dot]com/p/hackerskeyboard/issues/detail?id=57

The Hackers Keyboard is great, but does anybody have the same problem as mine.
The problem is that even the Hackers Keyboard includes additional languages, I'm unable to change between them using the sliding gesture over the space bar button. I think it has something to do with the multi-touch support.
I will send and email to the author two. I think It wold be nice if the keyboard has a dedicated button for language switch.

changing language by long pressing the space and then sliding sideways works for me, no problem at all but i changed some preferences before using the app and but i dont remember if i messed with language change options

Actually the mistake is all mine. I didn't realized that you have to add more than two languages. The language switch works, except it is not changing the language, but that is another problem

Step 1: Unzip File and copy the unzipped folder directly under PROGRAM FILES on you DEVICE (not INTERNAL)
Step 2: Run fingerkey_register file and select yes!

** If you dont like the PGDN buttons on the bottom, no fear

If the yota keyboard could be used as the normal keyboard is would be awesome!

does the yota phone use the normal diamond type keyboard for the rest of windows?

Hey.
does it exist anything able to make the keyboards on Diamond ROM 203 swe to become black? i've tried alot of things and it always ends with a Hardware reset.
would have been nice with a black skin for the Dial app too. now i'm using assets_black dial, but i need to copy the file after each soft reset.
finally,
I'm deeply impressed by all the hard work you guys have done, to develop some amazing apps/skins for the Diamond.

New Keyboard

Ok having had a hero running Villian 1.7.2 I loved it's keyboard and wanted it for my Atrix...... a bit of rummaging and a question to Villian on twitter got me to here
I went here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=654179
and in his sig you can go to his online kitchen, sign up and enter the site......
I found I needed to use the Hi-Res and in the drop down there is a version called "v27-optimus-2x-high-res" use that, then create the keyboard of you choosing (or use one of the many already there)
Download the result unzip it, and put it onto your phone using your fav method (I mount memory card and drag/drop across but then I am lazy windose user!)
Unmount, find the file (creat a folder called apks )
Install
In Menu Settings language / keyboard, select it, you can also customise it too.
then when you send a message, press and hold and change the input method.
Et voila...needs some work cos ther is a small gap between the keys and right hand side of the screen BUT in landscape looks lovely
If anyone else has any better ways to do this or get the KB full width in portrait I am all ears

nook salchicha, some glitches...

I rooted the nook using the salchicha nooter, however I have found some glitches
1) Gmail app, when I try to compose an email it just quits after I have typed about 20 characters, its not a timing issue, is about the number of typed characters
2) Google talk, I just see the top two rows of the keyboard.
Am I the only one seeing this? I have 2 NST and I can repro this on both devices.
Thanks!
disclaimer: I would have typed this in the devs forum but the system wants me to 10 times here before I can post in the devs section :-(
I notice the same exact issues
I rooted with the manual procedure, gtalk has the same bug, but Gmail works fine.
As met67 said Gmail works correctly, Gtalk dosnt. Rooted and installed Gapps using the manual method, and lately the MinimalTouch.
Is there a way to repair this bug? Does it happen in NookToucher root as well?
I know the topic is a bit old, but there was no sense in making a new similar one.
Try installing GO keyboard.
I'm using SalsichaNooter and my Gmail works fine, but I had the same problem with Google Talk. Install Go Keyboard (u gotta have andorid installed somwhere else or else You won't see the text in preference and will be stuck with default settings) or install Hackers keyboard (modified vesrion for android 2.1).
Look this topic up for installing keyboard: (my post with instruction is on the second page)

SMS Return Key - TyphooN CyanogenMod 7.2.0.1 v3.8.7

Hi there,
I'm new with TyphooN CyanogenMod 7.2.0.1 v3.8.7 an I really like It.
But there is one thing with SMS that I don't like.
I need sometimes the "new line" function. That what happens if you use the Enter ( Return ) Key.
Is there a way to get the Return Key into the ALT menu?
Like in the Pictures attached.
The left Picture is the normal version.
The right Picture is what I want.
Can anybody help me to get this working?
With Kind regards
Aod
If its not featured by your keybord, try another one.
I´m using this one.
I think it is only a "problem" caused by the sms/mms app.
Because the return key is in some other apps available.
Is there nobody who can make this little change in the app?
So that the return key is in the ALT menu? Like in the screenshot postet above?
Dude... its a keyboad thing.
It works with the keyboard I posted above!
So...
I have downloaded HTC_IME_Hi22_Grey.apk and installed it.
After the installation I go to Settings -> Language and Keyboard
and set there the "arrow" on "HTC_IME mod"
But It is not working. I still have the default keyboard in every app
EDIT:
Okay, I found the Problem. In the SMS app I had to chose the new Keyboard.
It is working now. Thanks for your help

just go into keyboard settings, i remember there was an option there. and you should acces the settings from the keyboard itself, by long-pressing a key( for me it is the , key) and not by going to settings
I got the same problem, but (for me) it seems to be a rom problem and I do not want to change the keyboard since I use neo-layout with ASK and with that keyboard it worked:
In my previsious rom ICS Paranoid Android I had an option in the sms app which allowed me to get a new line when hitting enter.
Now with JB PA (great Rom btw ) that option is gone (the enter key is still there but directly sends my message). Also tried to load a backup of the sms app via Titanium but no success.
My problem is that I am not yet allowed to post in dev forums but maybe you also got an idea?

[GUIDE] Change on-screen keyboard to LeanKey

I have fireTV 2 since a week and its on-screen keyboard was driving me crazy. If you also believe it is the worst keyboard you have ever seen, I have created a guide how to replace it with something decent.
It should work without root, as long as you can enable ADB debugging and connect to the device using adb.
Benefits: New keyboard supports mouse, has qwerty layout and is compatible with the web (doesn't force you to go prev/next on the page, so you can login to your services), will also not get in the way if you are using external keyboard.

I am a new XDA member and after trying to place this post I learned that our forum does not allow me to give any line of code - when I try, I get error message that the system blocked my thread and I should contact administrator if I feel this is unfair.
XDA served me for years as invaluable source of knowledge, and I will update this guide after these restrictions are no longer in place.
In the meantime, you can see full guide here: thorn*piekielko*pl/keyboard*html
(replace stars with dots).
And if you by a chance know any way to adjust fireTV volume, please let me know.
That's my next pain point with this device...

Happy to hear it works also on the Fire TV Stick. And it looks like it is confirmed now that you don't need root to do it Great.
If you wish to revert to your original keyboard, you have to list available input methods by this command:
ime list
You will see something like the result below, and you need to copy name of the input method you wish to set (without colon - this is the part I highlighted)
and then again use same command as before with a name of original keyboard to revert to it back.
ime set NAME_GOES_HERE
That's it.
For the server, your antivirus was overreacting. Some time ago I read an interesting article by Casey Smith about possible priviledges elevation in Windows and was experimenting a bit with it (however never managed to get it working). I guess when you opened the homepage your antivirus just noted its unusual code and rightfully warned you. I removed this proof of concept already, never expected someone will go here
Nice... I mostly use a USB K400r Keyboard with my Rooted FTV1's. And the stock keyboard app always gets in the way. I would want a keyboard that has a minimize option on it in case I want to use my physical keyboard only.
I do wonder if there is an Android "Settings.apk" compatible with FireOS 5 that can be installed like we did on FireOS 3. Back then it was for easy Bluetooth control. Which is not needed now that Amazon added more robust stock BlueTooth support. But I wonder if an Android 5 pulled/updated "Settings.apk" that is compatible with FireOS 5 can give you the same control for easy default KeyBoard switching from within the "Settings.apk". This would mean no ADB Shell needed & multiple KeyBoard support with faster switching.
Has anybody tested any "Settings.apk" on FireOS 5 for KeyBoard modding or something else ?
@Y314K Yes, this was my initial approach. You can sideload settings app, but it will just exit if you enter to keyboard and language settings. That's why I started to investigate adb commands.
For the minimize option, you can press back button to hide LeanKey when displayed, however it will appear again after you go to the next text field.

Was that Settings.apk the same we where using for FireOS 3. That is why I was wondering about finding a Settings.apk for a Android 5 build. Well I just tested one of my FTV1's that is still on FireOS 3 & have had the Settings.apk installed for a long time. And sure enough. It crashes if I try to go into language & input. So it's probably a dead end.
Nice, hitting back is still much better then dealing with the stock keyboard popup. I do wonder, can you use the mouse pad to edit multiple specific parts of one input field. Like after pasting your tutorials link & changing the * to .'s ? Without having the keyboard app constantly popup ?
Also is there a way to make the keyboard much larger then the one it shows on your pic in the OP ?
Much appreciate you sharing this method.
Here is the direct link to the tutorial for now: http://thorn.piekielko.pl/keyboard.html
Switched keyboards following your guide on my PreRooted FW v5.2.1.1_r1 FTV1. And I am very happy with the results. Pretty close to perfect. This keyboard is made for AndroidTV type devices. And it does a great job. I still think the developer can tweak it a bit for it to look better & can probably add a few extra options. But it is just about perfect functionally wise. I did find some small bugs in a few of the apps I use. But overall this is one of the best mods one can do on any FireTV device, Rooted or UnRooted. Specially if you use a keyboard/mouse. Great share Wredal.
As for the Installation Guide, I did find a few pointers.
First I would advise that everybody first do an "IME List" command & that they copy & paste (or take a screen grab) their response to a .txt file on their PC as a backup in case they want to know what they had as stock.
adb connect IP
adb shell
ime list
Click to collapse
Stop to copy & paste info or to screen grab the info. Then you can continue to enable & set your new keyboard.
ime enable org.liskovsoft.androidtv.rukeyboard/com.google.leanback.ime.LeanbackImeService
ime set org.liskovsoft.androidtv.rukeyboard/com.google.leanback.ime.LeanbackImeService
Click to collapse
In my case after enabling & setting the LeanKey Keyboard. If I do a IME List command again. It shows/lists both keyboards. First the stock & then the LeanKey. On your IME List picture it only shows the LeanKey Keyboard. Is this because you had disabled the stock keyboard on one of your prior tweaks ??
If you did disable, hide, deleted or did something to your stock keyboard. I do wonder what would happen if the LeanKey Keyboard would become unset. Which can happen if the LeanKey Keyboard APK crashes or if you manually go into the installed LeanKey Keyboard app settings & choose "Force Stop" Or "Clear Data" since this makes my stock keyboard comeback as default. "Clear Cache" does not seem to unset the LeanKey Keyboard. And it survives a AFTV restart just fine.
It is a easy fix. Just run the Set command again to set the LeanKey Keyboard back.
adb connect IP
adb shell
ime set org.liskovsoft.androidtv.rukeyboard/com.google.leanback.ime.LeanbackImeService
Click to collapse
The LeanKey Keyboard seems to work perfectly with just about any app I've tried so far. Great on latest Chrome, Viki, old Viki TV, Downloader, etc.
The only apps I've had some very minor problems with is Opera & Opera Beta @ v37. The back key option to hide the keyboard kicks you out of the input field altogether. And when trying to scroll down thru your bookmarks when going thru your address bar the keyboard tries to stay there blocking you view. I did find a way to get rid of the keyboard while still being able to stay on the input field or drop down list. First you need to start to input something that will make some recommendations. Then you have to grab the white part where the possible options/recommendation are with your mouse. This will get rid of the keyboard but will leave the input field or list. This is a very minor bug. Plan to test Opera v41 or newer in the next few days. I did not have any of this problems with Chrome. But I do prefer how great Opera is at blocking pop-ups & ads on the FireTV.
Thanks again for posting this awesome guide. :good:

Well, that's not needed. You can list available IME at all times, and if IME is not listed, you can't enable it or use it. Having this list stored somewhere will not give you any advantage.

Yes, when you follow my guide, the original stock keyboard will be always available for you. In my case, I was trying different angles to replace the keyboard and one of them included replacing original apk file from system to something else - hence it is no longer available in my box. If you don't happen to remove random files from your /system folder you should be fine

If it crashes, system will restart the app automatically. If you uninstall or disable or clear it, system will go for the next IME option (which will be the stock keyboard).
In the most bizzare situation when you remove stock kb and uninstall LeanKey, system will be stuck trying to restart any IME, and you will get blinking screen restarting launcher in infinite loop.
OK, if you freeze all IMEs and disable dbugging and have no root to reinstall system from recovery, I guess you are bricked. But if you went such a long way to do so, you kind of deserve it

Well, that's not needed. You can list available IME at all times, and if IME is not listed, you can't enable it or use it. Having this list stored somewhere will not give you any advantage.

Good to know. I always like to have a note or saved up list of the stock setup. And since I didn't see it on the pic you posted I thought it would be a good idea. But since it's always there unless you go the extra mile to remove it. Then it is not needed.

Yes, when you follow my guide, the original stock keyboard will be always available for you. In my case, I was trying different angles to replace the keyboard and one of them included replacing original apk file from system to something else - hence it is no longer available in my box. If you don't happen to remove random files from your /system folder you should be fine

Good to confirm. That is what I thought once you mentioned "tweaks". I am using this FTV1 on the latest PreRooted FW as a testing device before I update all my other FTV1's so that is why I am testing different things above normal usage. I know I will be Factory Resetting it once I am happy with everything. Fun testing for now. And as long as TWRP is fine. Very easy to go back to PreRooted stock.

Thanks for the info. Since I don't want to even see the old stock keyboard I went ahead & removed it from the list running the following line:
Code:
ime disable com.amazon.tv.ime/.FireTVIME
It can always be enabled again by running the following line:
Code:
ime enable com.amazon.tv.ime/.FireTVIME
Now even if I "Force Stop" or "clear Data" on the LeanKey Keyboard app. It always instantly comes back as the stock keyboard. Brilliant!!

, Since I am using this FTV1 for testing right now. I went ahead & uninstalled the LeanKey Keyboard App when it was the only enabled IME device. It was the only device showing after the IME List command.
I did this from within AppStarter. Once I hit Uninstall, I was kicked out to the Home/Recent screen. I went back into FireStarter & tried an app that uses the onscreen keyboard. And to my surprise. The stock keyboard app was back. Did a check of the IME List. And sure enough it was back on there as the only IME device. So there seems to be fail safe mechanism that re-Enables & re-Sets the stock keyboard in the event you have manually disabled it. Like you mentioned, you would probably need to mess with the IME files within /System with root access to really mess things up. Good to know...
Then I just re-Installed the LeanKey KeyBoard App from a backup I had created in ES File Explorer. And it showed back on my IME List without any action from me. But the stock keyboard app was still the default. So I just disabled the stock keyboard again. And I am back to an all LeanKey KeyBoard bliss.
On that note, now that I got LeanKey Keyboard working perfectly. I am moving on to solving the last bug I've found since upgrading from PreRooted FireOS 3 to PreRooted FireOS 5. It is the inability to Enable the Root option from ES File Explorer. Seems it might have something to do with the FireOS 5 file structure. Maybe you can come over & take a look. I will be doing a detailed post in the next few hours over on this thread:

Thanks again.. :highfive:

Forgot to add: Let me know if you need any help testing the nice, large keyboard in your MiBox after you extract it.

I wish I could help you with that, however I can enable this option in ES File Explorer with no issues on my pre-rooted FireTV2. For tweaking root filesystem I however recommend using Root Explorer. It is a paid app, but worth the price. You can also use free Total Commander.

One question, why is the FireTV keyboard ABCDEF layout while any other keyboard has QWERTY.

Amazon Developers/Project Managers decided to really go Retro. :cyclops:
Hi, installed this on non-root ftv2 with 5.2.4.1 fw and it works nearly perfect. The only problem i have is that the pin prompt doesn't show up. Everytime when i have to enter the pin only the leanback keyboard appears and i have to enter the pin "blind". Do you have same behaviour?

Yes...
I haven't used a pin in a while but I have the same bug when going into Location to change the Zip & on Network to Configure Network settings. Luckily it is not a daily problem.
Hello! I changed my Firestick keyboard with this guide, and it worked. Thank you!
However, now I wish to install language packs - specifically, Italian. (I cannot post a direct link because I am new to the forum).
I am completely new to ADB. What do I need to do?
Thank you so much!
Hi, did you happen to take the makeshift thorn dot piekielko dot pl/keyboard dot html in the OP down? That page is pulling up blank for me.
Hi, all. I'm the developer of the LeanKey keyboard.
I've some news. First of all - current version is out of development for some reasons.
Instead of this the new pro version has been built.
Downloads: github.com/yuliskov/LeanKeyKeyboard/releases
Major changes:
kbd goes open source
all-in-one version (all language packs included)
added standalone button to change language
minor bugfixes
Enable command on Amazon devices has been changed a bit (since package name is changed). New command is:
Code:
ime enable org.liskovsoft.leankeykeyboard.pro/com.google.leanback.ime.LeanbackImeService

Really enjoy the Leankey Keyboard on my FTV1's. Thanks for developing it.
In the past when using the Leankey keyboard we could not access some of the settings like network settings & Zip code on our FireTVs. It was like the pop up screen for this settings got blocked by the keyboard pop-up. We could try to type stuff. But it was blind typing.. Making you having to switch keyboards just to change basic settings. Has this been fixed ?
