[GUIDE] Change on-screen keyboard to LeanKey - Fire TV General

I have fireTV 2 since a week and its on-screen keyboard was driving me crazy. If you also believe it is the worst keyboard you have ever seen, I have created a guide how to replace it with something decent.
It should work without root, as long as you can enable ADB debugging and connect to the device using adb.
Benefits: New keyboard supports mouse, has qwerty layout and is compatible with the web (doesn't force you to go prev/next on the page, so you can login to your services), will also not get in the way if you are using external keyboard.

I am a new XDA member and after trying to place this post I learned that our forum does not allow me to give any line of code - when I try, I get error message that the system blocked my thread and I should contact administrator if I feel this is unfair.
XDA served me for years as invaluable source of knowledge, and I will update this guide after these restrictions are no longer in place.
In the meantime, you can see full guide here: thorn*piekielko*pl/keyboard*html
(replace stars with dots).
And if you by a chance know any way to adjust fireTV volume, please let me know.
That's my next pain point with this device...

Seems nice, going to try it.
---EDIT---
Works great. Just tried it, Just one thing when i went to website. I tried to go to the homepage to just to check it out and then my Antivirus said it found some kind of virus or malware like a bot. Not sure? Has my antivirus gone crazy?
Oh and have you found away to get the regular keyboard back. Looked for keyboard app name but could not find it.

Happy to hear it works also on the Fire TV Stick. And it looks like it is confirmed now that you don't need root to do it Great.
If you wish to revert to your original keyboard, you have to list available input methods by this command:
ime list
You will see something like the result below, and you need to copy name of the input method you wish to set (without colon - this is the part I highlighted)
and then again use same command as before with a name of original keyboard to revert to it back.
ime set NAME_GOES_HERE
That's it.
For the server, your antivirus was overreacting. Some time ago I read an interesting article by Casey Smith about possible priviledges elevation in Windows and was experimenting a bit with it (however never managed to get it working). I guess when you opened the homepage your antivirus just noted its unusual code and rightfully warned you. I removed this proof of concept already, never expected someone will go here

Nice... I mostly use a USB K400r Keyboard with my Rooted FTV1's. And the stock keyboard app always gets in the way. I would want a keyboard that has a minimize option on it in case I want to use my physical keyboard only.
I do wonder if there is an Android "Settings.apk" compatible with FireOS 5 that can be installed like we did on FireOS 3. Back then it was for easy Bluetooth control. Which is not needed now that Amazon added more robust stock BlueTooth support. But I wonder if an Android 5 pulled/updated "Settings.apk" that is compatible with FireOS 5 can give you the same control for easy default KeyBoard switching from within the "Settings.apk". This would mean no ADB Shell needed & multiple KeyBoard support with faster switching.
Has anybody tested any "Settings.apk" on FireOS 5 for KeyBoard modding or something else ?

@Y314K Yes, this was my initial approach. You can sideload settings app, but it will just exit if you enter to keyboard and language settings. That's why I started to investigate adb commands.
For the minimize option, you can press back button to hide LeanKey when displayed, however it will appear again after you go to the next text field.

Was that Settings.apk the same we where using for FireOS 3. That is why I was wondering about finding a Settings.apk for a Android 5 build. Well I just tested one of my FTV1's that is still on FireOS 3 & have had the Settings.apk installed for a long time. And sure enough. It crashes if I try to go into language & input. So it's probably a dead end.
Nice, hitting back is still much better then dealing with the stock keyboard popup. I do wonder, can you use the mouse pad to edit multiple specific parts of one input field. Like after pasting your tutorials link & changing the * to .'s ? Without having the keyboard app constantly popup ?
Also is there a way to make the keyboard much larger then the one it shows on your pic in the OP ?
Much appreciate you sharing this method.
Here is the direct link to the tutorial for now: http://thorn.piekielko.pl/keyboard.html

Switched keyboards following your guide on my PreRooted FW v5.2.1.1_r1 FTV1. And I am very happy with the results. Pretty close to perfect. This keyboard is made for AndroidTV type devices. And it does a great job. I still think the developer can tweak it a bit for it to look better & can probably add a few extra options. But it is just about perfect functionally wise. I did find some small bugs in a few of the apps I use. But overall this is one of the best mods one can do on any FireTV device, Rooted or UnRooted. Specially if you use a keyboard/mouse. Great share Wredal.
As for the Installation Guide, I did find a few pointers.
First I would advise that everybody first do an "IME List" command & that they copy & paste (or take a screen grab) their response to a .txt file on their PC as a backup in case they want to know what they had as stock.
adb connect IP
adb shell
ime list
Click to collapse
Stop to copy & paste info or to screen grab the info. Then you can continue to enable & set your new keyboard.
ime enable org.liskovsoft.androidtv.rukeyboard/com.google.leanback.ime.LeanbackImeService
ime set org.liskovsoft.androidtv.rukeyboard/com.google.leanback.ime.LeanbackImeService
Click to collapse
In my case after enabling & setting the LeanKey Keyboard. If I do a IME List command again. It shows/lists both keyboards. First the stock & then the LeanKey. On your IME List picture it only shows the LeanKey Keyboard. Is this because you had disabled the stock keyboard on one of your prior tweaks ??
If you did disable, hide, deleted or did something to your stock keyboard. I do wonder what would happen if the LeanKey Keyboard would become unset. Which can happen if the LeanKey Keyboard APK crashes or if you manually go into the installed LeanKey Keyboard app settings & choose "Force Stop" Or "Clear Data" since this makes my stock keyboard comeback as default. "Clear Cache" does not seem to unset the LeanKey Keyboard. And it survives a AFTV restart just fine.
It is a easy fix. Just run the Set command again to set the LeanKey Keyboard back.
adb connect IP
adb shell
ime set org.liskovsoft.androidtv.rukeyboard/com.google.leanback.ime.LeanbackImeService

The LeanKey Keyboard seems to work perfectly with just about any app I've tried so far. Great on latest Chrome, Viki, old Viki TV, Downloader, etc.
The only apps I've had some very minor problems with is Opera & Opera Beta @ v37. The back key option to hide the keyboard kicks you out of the input field altogether. And when trying to scroll down thru your bookmarks when going thru your address bar the keyboard tries to stay there blocking you view. I did find a way to get rid of the keyboard while still being able to stay on the input field or drop down list. First you need to start to input something that will make some recommendations. Then you have to grab the white part where the possible options/recommendation are with your mouse. This will get rid of the keyboard but will leave the input field or list. This is a very minor bug. Plan to test Opera v41 or newer in the next few days. I did not have any of this problems with Chrome. But I do prefer how great Opera is at blocking pop-ups & ads on the FireTV.
Thanks again for posting this awesome guide. :good:

Well, you can click and edit the text using your physical keyboard and just ignore that onscreen keyboard is also displayed. It will not interfere.

Well, that's not needed. You can list available IME at all times, and if IME is not listed, you can't enable it or use it. Having this list stored somewhere will not give you any advantage.

Yes, when you follow my guide, the original stock keyboard will be always available for you. In my case, I was trying different angles to replace the keyboard and one of them included replacing original apk file from system to something else - hence it is no longer available in my box. If you don't happen to remove random files from your /system folder you should be fine

If it crashes, system will restart the app automatically. If you uninstall or disable or clear it, system will go for the next IME option (which will be the stock keyboard).
In the most bizzare situation when you remove stock kb and uninstall LeanKey, system will be stuck trying to restart any IME, and you will get blinking screen restarting launcher in infinite loop.
OK, if you freeze all IMEs and disable dbugging and have no root to reinstall system from recovery, I guess you are bricked. But if you went such a long way to do so, you kind of deserve it

Good to know. I always like to have a note or saved up list of the stock setup. And since I didn't see it on the pic you posted I thought it would be a good idea. But since it's always there unless you go the extra mile to remove it. Then it is not needed.

Good to confirm. That is what I thought once you mentioned "tweaks". I am using this FTV1 on the latest PreRooted FW as a testing device before I update all my other FTV1's so that is why I am testing different things above normal usage. I know I will be Factory Resetting it once I am happy with everything. Fun testing for now. And as long as TWRP is fine. Very easy to go back to PreRooted stock.

Thanks for the info. Since I don't want to even see the old stock keyboard I went ahead & removed it from the list running the following line:
Code:
ime disable com.amazon.tv.ime/.FireTVIME
It can always be enabled again by running the following line:
Code:
ime enable com.amazon.tv.ime/.FireTVIME
Now even if I "Force Stop" or "clear Data" on the LeanKey Keyboard app. It always instantly comes back as the stock keyboard. Brilliant!!

, Since I am using this FTV1 for testing right now. I went ahead & uninstalled the LeanKey Keyboard App when it was the only enabled IME device. It was the only device showing after the IME List command.
I did this from within AppStarter. Once I hit Uninstall, I was kicked out to the Home/Recent screen. I went back into FireStarter & tried an app that uses the onscreen keyboard. And to my surprise. The stock keyboard app was back. Did a check of the IME List. And sure enough it was back on there as the only IME device. So there seems to be fail safe mechanism that re-Enables & re-Sets the stock keyboard in the event you have manually disabled it. Like you mentioned, you would probably need to mess with the IME files within /System with root access to really mess things up. Good to know...
Then I just re-Installed the LeanKey KeyBoard App from a backup I had created in ES File Explorer. And it showed back on my IME List without any action from me. But the stock keyboard app was still the default. So I just disabled the stock keyboard again. And I am back to an all LeanKey KeyBoard bliss.
On that note, now that I got LeanKey Keyboard working perfectly. I am moving on to solving the last bug I've found since upgrading from PreRooted FireOS 3 to PreRooted FireOS 5. It is the inability to Enable the Root option from ES File Explorer. Seems it might have something to do with the FireOS 5 file structure. Maybe you can come over & take a look. I will be doing a detailed post in the next few hours over on this thread:

I wish I could help you with that, however I can enable this option in ES File Explorer with no issues on my pre-rooted FireTV2. For tweaking root filesystem I however recommend using Root Explorer. It is a paid app, but worth the price. You can also use free Total Commander.

Hi, installed this on non-root ftv2 with 5.2.4.1 fw and it works nearly perfect. The only problem i have is that the pin prompt doesn't show up. Everytime when i have to enter the pin only the leanback keyboard appears and i have to enter the pin "blind". Do you have same behaviour?

Hello! I changed my Firestick keyboard with this guide, and it worked. Thank you!
However, now I wish to install language packs - specifically, Italian. (I cannot post a direct link because I am new to the forum).
I am completely new to ADB. What do I need to do?
Thank you so much!

Hi, did you happen to take the makeshift thorn dot piekielko dot pl/keyboard dot html in the OP down? That page is pulling up blank for me.

Hi, all. I'm the developer of the LeanKey keyboard.
I've some news. First of all - current version is out of development for some reasons.
Instead of this the new pro version has been built.
Downloads: github.com/yuliskov/LeanKeyKeyboard/releases
Major changes:
kbd goes open source
all-in-one version (all language packs included)
added standalone button to change language
minor bugfixes
Enable command on Amazon devices has been changed a bit (since package name is changed). New command is:
Code:
ime enable org.liskovsoft.leankeykeyboard.pro/com.google.leanback.ime.LeanbackImeService

Really enjoy the Leankey Keyboard on my FTV1's. Thanks for developing it.
In the past when using the Leankey keyboard we could not access some of the settings like network settings & Zip code on our FireTVs. It was like the pop up screen for this settings got blocked by the keyboard pop-up. We could try to type stuff. But it was blind typing.. Making you having to switch keyboards just to change basic settings. Has this been fixed ?

Please don't re-post this information, as I have now built a new version of the program that should work on the Sprint Touch without any special instructions required. It's been tested by Sprint users and seems to be working well so far.
You can download the beta (v1.29d) from www.fatattitude.com/software

Best,

Works great on HTC Touch! WooHoo!
Very Nice job. Very Nice, indeed.
Personally, I wanted the photo to launch the HTC Camera Album.lnk the way you can scroll with your finger & zoom, etc.
So, I created the Photos button in MediaHub to be:
\WindowsHTCAlbum.exe
Params: -mode:camera -type:image
when i try and install the settings app i get a error messsage about
"Installation was unsuccessful. The program or settings cannot be installed because it does not have sufficient system permissions"
how do i chang it so i can install and run this.. thanks

If you look at the post at the top of this page by Carlos, you'll see he says, "For installation instructions please see: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=324556."
He also gives these suggestions:
- If you're installing to Storage Card, try installing to the Device instead.
- If you still get the error, try resetting your device and installing again - this honestly worked for me!
- Check there is enough free storage space on your device.
- Try a manual installation (zip file coming to first post shortly)
There are many posts about this in other threads, so you should be able to find the info you need.
Carlos,
Any reason to upgrade to 1.29e if d is working well?
Secondly, if we do upgrade - do you have to uninstall first? or can you overwrite the program?
I don't seem to be able to see a changes history. I'll keep looking.

I have spent a good deal of time getting my Sprint Touch to display my local weather by using N2A's "patched" HtcHome.dll which points at a server that does support my local weather (unlike the Htc's accuweather server). Now I would like to use 'Touch Settings' to easily customize what apps get launched from my 3x2 app launcher and the media hub buttons, but I'm not sure if I dare do this yet since I haven't seen anyone explain how 'Touch Settings' accomplishes displaying local weather.
Can anyone tell me how it does this? My concern is that it may conflict with the patched home plugin I already have working.

Hi SprintTouchGuy
Touch Settings updates the registry keys at \HKLM\Software\HTC\HomePlug\Weather\Settings
I don't think this should change your server settings etc, and it certainly won't change which .dll file your weather is pulled from.
Why not do a registry backup of that key, try out Touch Settings and if there are any problems, just restore your registry? I think you'll be OK with it.
Hi all
I have a new beta of Touch Settings v2.0 that I'd really like a couple of people to test for me, in particular people with Vogues and Touch Duals, especially pp18 and that other kind person who volunteered.
I have posted it in:

....if you could keep feedback in that thread for now please? Feels like we have too many threads going at once otherwise and gets confusing!
Thanks,

One thing I noticed would be interested in finding out if other Sprint Touch users are seeing: after updating my "On Demand" app launcher's button to open a different app in the mediahub, the "Demand" in the text "On Demand" is now half cut-off. I assume this text (which I would like to change anyway) is stored in the registry somewhere and is not editable via Touch Settings yet. I can spend some time researching which settings to manually change in the registry, but if you are going to add this feature soon to the app, then I won't spend the time.
Thanks again, regardless...

Thanks Carlos...I can't believe I didn't think to at least try tapping in there! (Oh me of little faith...)
Next minor issue:
I made my bottom mediahub button say "Voice Recorder", and the word "Recorder" wrapped to a second line which is half-way cut off. I see that text wraps on the middle button as well, and although it doesn't get cut off it does look off-center vertically. I don't know if there is any way to adjust the text vertically with the magic that you do, so for now I'll try to come up with one word labels for the buttons to avoid the issue.
I also am curous what parameter to use to get the HtcAlbum.exe to launch the Camera Album to display just videos, like the 2nd-row 3rd button in does in the 9 button app launcher that comes on the 3rd tab of the HTC Home plugin. Does anybody know what I need to supply? I believe there is a mode: option, but when trying "mode:video" it still only comes up displaying pictures, and it does so in portrait view, not in landscape view like it does from the app launcher (which I prefer). My apologies if this has been discussed already...thanks!

Carlos - this is kind of a QA issue with the interface. Can I make the suggestion that you change the color of that box from gray to something like yellow? The first few times I opened the app I thought it was the typical "grayed out" box -- meaning I couldn't edit it. Whereas when I see a yellow box it grabs my attention and suggests I should be doing something with it...

[APP] Japanese display and input addon (updated 2009.07.03)

What this does is that it enables display and input of Japanese characters. It can for instance be used to read web pages, or together with a dictionary program such as EBPocket and commercial dictionaries.
USAGE NOTES: READ THIS FIRST
This .cab is designed for a CLEAN/HARD RESET device. If you have other Japanese enabling software like decuma, CE-star, letsjapan etc. installed, remove them. I have no idea how they might interact with each other without testing. This file is a single install that has everything you need and want to get JP display and input working. If it doesn't work and you had some other type of JP enabling software previously installed, try a hard reset.
After installation and soft reset you'll notice you now have several new keyboard SIPs available. HOWEVER JAPANESE INPUT WILL NOT WORK JUST BY CLICKING ON THEM. You have to activate it first.
Diamond/device with no keyboard: Bring up the regular software keyboard. Press ctrl, shift, shift, ctrl. In that order. You can now switch to any of the Japanese keyboards and JP input will work. T9 input will be disabled for that session. If this doesn't work either try using PQzII to switch keyboards (I don't know if this works) or change the registry setting mentioned below.
Raphael/device with H/W keyboard: The instructions are basically the same as for the Diamond, except that you can do the activation using the hardware keyboard, if you want. Press ctrl+shift at the same time to activate it. Do not press them in succession like on the software keyboard.
JP input will only be activated on a per program basis, so you can have EBPocket open and use Japanese, and then switch to a writing a text message and use T9 or a localized keyboard. Once JP input has been activated, you can use ctrl+shift again to switch back and forth between a regular (non-localized/non-T9) layout and Japanese. On the Diamond just switch from kana to eigo mode instead, using the soft keyboard. Restarting a program will cause the keyboard to revert back to t9/localized.
If you want to change this behavior and avoid having to activate every time you want to type in Japanese, change the following registry key:
From
Code:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\keyboard layout\Preload]
@="e0010409"
to
Code:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\keyboard layout\Preload]
@="e0010411"
Note that this will completely disable T9/localized input. You can also use this to change the default keyboard if you use a SIP other than 409. In that case you also have to change the value in Preload\1 to match.
NOTES FOR THE 6.5 EXPERIMENTAL VERSION
This is for VGA/WVGA only. If you need other resolutions, use the regular cab (it works on 6.5). Some files (most notably wince.nls) have been extracted from WM6.5, but this is by no means a complete port. The romaji SIP has been removed to reduce SIP clutter and memory footprint. Reloadnls has been removed as I found that it was no longer needed, at least on my Raphael.
COMPATIBILITY NOTES
People are reporting problems with the HD2, so until those are fixed I recommend you not use this
Some Japanese software requires that the regional settings in the Control Panel be set to Japanese, in order for them to work. If you have any problems with display of Japanese characters, try changing that first. While this add-on doesn't set that default, it does add the setting itself to the control panel applet. Note that changing this setting will also change the language for some multi-language applications, such as Google Maps Mobile.
NEW: If you're having trouble with compatibility, you can also try the ime6compat.cab file I've attached below (install after the main file). It contains registry settings with the previously mentioned settings as default instead, and should be tried before reporting any issues in the thread.
If you're having trouble with the names of the input modes not showing up, the cab failed to install properly. This can either be fixed by reinstalling (you may have to try multiple times), or you can use the ime6SIPnamefix.cab file to replace the names of the SIPs with romaji equivalents.
The main .cab file contains files for all known screen resolutions, so should work on pretty much anything out there, including the Touch HD. If you're scrapped for space, you can delete some files from the Windows folder.
For QVGA devices delete the following (4.8 MB):
mboxjpn.192.dll
mskana.192.dll
msimj.192.dll
mboxjpn.128.dll
mskana.128.dll
msimj.128.dll
For 320x320 resolution devices delete the following (3.5 MB) :
mboxjpn.96.dll
mskana.96.dll
msimj.96.dll
mboxjpn.192.dll
mskana.192.dll
msimj.192.dll
For VGA resolution and higher devices delete the following (1.77 MB) :
mboxjpn.96.dll
mskana.96.dll
msimj.96.dll
mboxjpn.128.dll
mskana.128.dll
msimj.128.dll
It has been tested as working on WM5 and newer, including 6.5. However, install at your own risk. I will not be held responsible if this does not work for some reason, or messes up your device.

Regular version
Experimental WM6.5 version
History:
2009.07.03
Added experimental WM6.5 version.
2009.05.01
Cleaned up some corrupt registry entries and updated some of the files to a newer version from the Softbank X05HT. Changes should be mostly cosmetic however, so no need to update if it's already working.
2009.01.02
Reverted to original wince.nls, removing Chinese support (it was patchy anyway - and needed a different font to work completely). Memory footprint should be a tad reduced, and may also affect (improve) stability.
Attached .cab file with registry settings for people with compatibility issues.
2008.12.05
Added support for 320x320 devices.
Added some limited support for displaying Chinese - will be switched out to a separate file later with full support.
Switched core from letsjapan to reloadnls.
2008.11.16
Removed default region setting to accommodate multi-lingual apps.
2008.11.15
Removed SystemLCID setting so that font bolding works the same way as prior to installation.
2008.11.14
Fixed "\" being shown as "¥".
Added Option3="D".
Initial release.

This software is beerware. If you like it and would like to buy me a beer (up to you of course), donate and I'll make a toast in your honor
Thanks Flinx1!! Great work!!
The only visible problem is the "Yen" instead replacing "\" issue ;o)
Reminder to fix it for those who do not know:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\FontLink\SkipTable
The you should set the following keys:
Key: Courier New, Value: 00a5,007e,0391-03c9,2026,2116,221a,25a0-25ff
Key: Tahoma, Value: 00a5,007e,0391-03c9,2026,2116,221a,25a0-25ff
After a soft reset you should have your "\" back. The entry for changing the "\" for "¥" is 00a5. So maybe you want to add only this value to the key.
Great work!!!!
I posted this over in the Raphael forum, but I will note it again for posterity.
For Raphael users, you may want to use these reg settings:
Code:
[HKCU\Keyboard Layout\Preload]
default = "E0010411"
[HKCU\Keyboard Layout\Preload\1]
default = "E0010411"
[HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\IMEJP\3.1\MSIME]
Option3 = "D"
[HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Layouts\e0010411]
Keyboard Layout = "00000409"
First two re-enable hardware keyboard and buttons. Third option sets Romaji as default conversion. Last option keeps SIP conversion enabled (kensaku/tegaki/etc) -- otherwise JP IME is broken.
Diamond users may wish to try the last setting if they are having problems getting both English and JP SIPs working at the same time (untested since I don't have a Diamond, but worth a try).
And continuing the previous discussion about hotkey romaji/kana toggle, Raphael users may want to use PQzII. Typing "0xE6" into the IME option (see screenshot) will map the hardware "SYM" key to change romaji/kana conversion mode on-the-fly.

Diamond users can also use PQzII, but without the IME hotkey option. Just enable the icon, and tap the icon to switch IME modes (notice the あ in the icon tray). "Matching" black iconset is attached below.
Hey Flinx1,
After appliying the patch to get back the "\", the names of the Japanese SIP are not anymore shown or replaced by a unique "\".. Well, does not matter but it is strange )
First two re-enable hardware keyboard and buttons.

You don't need to re-enable it, it works. What you suggest will also break T9/localized input as I mentioned in the top post. If you just want the JP IME as default, all you need to do is change preload, not preload\1.
I'll have a look at the other two you mentioned.
EDIT: Of the other two options you mentioned, one was already set (the 409 one) and the other does nothing that I can tell. Can you describe in more detail what exactly it's supposed to do?
NM. Ignore this.

The code was 005c, not 00a5. Delete the courier new entry and change the Tahoma one to the one you mentioned. I'll be changing it in the .cab to match.
EDIT: Done. If you still have problems, try adding 005c back in front. Deleting it should normally change "¥" to "\" as you mention, but something sounds like it's broken on your end, maybe due to compatibility issues with some other conversion app. Only other thing I can suggest is to try a hard reset and start from scratch. It's possible to change the names of the Japanese SIPs to something that doesn't contain Japanese characters, but unless other people have the same problem, I'd rather not.

I am coming from a Raphael so the registry settings will likely be different for Diamond users.
On the Raphael, you need to set both Preload and Preload\1 to 411, otherwise the hardware qwerty keyboard will not work. Yes unfortunately it will break T9, but with the full qwerty that's not a big problem (at least if you only need 日英入力).
Setting Layouts\e0010411 to 409 addresses an older problem where WM would load IMEJP properly, but would not let you switch to any IMEJP SIPs. Specifically, everytime you try to select Kensaku/Tegaki/etc WM would always revert to the standard "Keyboard" SIP.
Option3 is purely preferential. Setting it to D tells IMEJP to use direct input [_A] by default when the phone is turned on. If you type mainly in Japanese, you may prefer to leave the original reg setting, which will tell IMEJP to use hiragana/romaji input [あ] by default.
Again, these settings are specific to the Raphael. Both Preload and Preload\1 are necessary. Whether Layouts\e0010411 matters anymore in WM6.1 isn't really known (on some devices it works, on others it doesn't, or doesn't matter). But I've gone through most (if not all) of the Japanese-input threads at most forums/sites, and the above settings have given me the most reliable SIP- and 変換-switching for the Raphael.

Could you elaborate on the necessary settings. I can't get it to work the way it should. It just doesn't change the IME-mode by tapping on the icon (well, it changes from あ to A, but the input method remains the same). The automatic change of the SIP according to portrait or landscape mode is nice, though.
And many thanks to flinx1 for his work. This is excellent. I had to write a manual for myself how to recover my Japanese settings in case of a hard reset. I can throw that away now!

PQzII is just a simple program to toggle IMEJP if it's present. I don't know what device you have or which specific SIP you're trying to use -- and I don't know if the registry settings flinx1's cab are causing any conflicts.
I put up a brief video showing what you should be expecting if you want to use PQzII:
http://jp.youtube.com/watch?v=c2RzpL-OCxM
From there we can start to figure out what's working and what isn't.
I have a Raphael too, so it's not an issue .
On the Raphael, you need to set both Preload and Preload\1 to 411

Not with this .cab - you just need to change Preload itself. 411 is already set in Preload\2 to facilitate switching keyboard layouts.
I see what you mean by the D option now - I'll add it.

See, I installed LetsJapanNo6 (then softreset), then IME_31J_F (then softreset); and there is no Preload\2 in my registry. Have you added any extra 3rd party keyboard layouts?
I'm not using IME_31J_F. I've modified things a bit for a more streamlined install, including adding the ability to switch keyboard layouts between 409 and 411 so T9/localized keyboards work.
PQzII works fine by the way, just like in the video linked. Ctrl+shift does the same thing though, so I doubt I'll bother with it.
hello flinx1! another issue i see now is that the bold characters in windows are not any more displayed in bold..
letsjapan6 has installed the msgothic.ac3 font. i don't know he this font is able to display bold characters? i was using meiryo.ttc as main font for my diamond .. do you know how to recover bold characters? do you have the same issue than me?
for example, the bottom screen software button from windows are not anymore in nsbold..
I'll look into it.
Okay, I found the problem. It's not the font, but instead the SystemLCID setting:
Code:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\nls]
SystemLCID="1041"
That sets the system region to Japanese, which means that it will behave exactly as a Japanese winmo install - on my emulator the fonts in Japanese WinMo don't appear in bold for those parts of the OS.
So what I've done is that I've created a new cab which doesn't contain that key. It will remain unchanged, even if you changed the regional settings in the control panel. From my limited testing, things seem to work, but I can't guarantee anything. Please try it out. If there's any compatibility issues, you can try changing the key above, but make note of the original value so you can change it back again.
Let me know if everything works, and I'll replace the links in the top post.
http://rapidshare.com/files/164079800/JPIMEWM6.rar.html
Thanks flinx1,
I also experienced the "missing bold font" problem with your previous version, but after uninstalling and installing the latest update, I can confirm the big font is still there.
Also everything elese I tested so far works great.
Thank you.
One minor thing: I mainly use your language pack to be able to show japanese characters in google maps and read japanese internet sites.
Thus I would prefer, if the regional setting of my device would not be set to Japan after installation, as I have to switch back to english manually (as frequent rom updater, I would like to aviod this extra step).
Thanks and regards,
EDIT: I found that the SIP icon to open shows now always japanese symbol (see screenprint attached). when opening SIP, it switches to normal qwerty keyboard sysmbol, but while SIp is closed, always hiragana "a" is shown. Any chance to have normal qwerty symbole shown even when SIP is closed?
Just change the regional setting in the control panel to match whatever region you prefer, and the language for Google Maps will change. The problem is that some applications require the regional setting be set to Japanese, in order for them to work. I'll change it and make a note about software compatibility in the top post and readme.
As for the SIP symbol, I'm not sure what's causing that. It doesn't happen in any of the WinMo emulators, so I'm thinking it must be specific to HTC. That makes it much harder to figure out too. Ultimately it's not worth the effort I think.
Installed on Hermes (schaps latest ROM). Works great, fonts seems much easier to read.
Only problem was manual switching, no go on that ctrl-shift combinations, had to made Japanese IME default in registry.
flinx1, thanks big time for this one!
Did you try both using the hardware keyboard and the soft keyboard? The reason it doesn't work with the hardware keyboard I suspect is because you have to hit the FN key to get ctrl working on the Hermes, and that will change the behavior of the shift key to capslock instead.

[Q] What is the best alternative keyboard for nook touch?

Hi
What is the best alternative keyboard for nook touch?
Thanks
I try a lot of keybords today. Two works fine (much better than nook's keyboard):
1. Go Keyboard
cons: You can't see any word in setings page (eink compatibility I guess)
2. Swiftkey
cons: Annoying preview when press keys and you can't turn it off.

Sorry for resurrecting this thread, but I just got a chance to experiment a bit more with GO Keyboard. Yeah, it totally sucks that you can't see ANY text on the Settings page..... and I'd kill to find out how to shut off the key preview (upon key presses). Love the keyboard but it gets sooooo messy when preview is on.
Kudos to anyone who knows which item in the settings list shuts it off!
I installed GO keyboard on my phone so I can see the text in the settings from there. Key preview, popup, is in Display settings (Tv/ square with chainwheel symbol), and than fourth setting from the bottom.
To install new languages you can just download them from market and than switch directly from the keyboard.

Thanks for noticing this thread AND helping me out with perfect instructions! Much obliged!
Is there a chance someone with Go Keyboard on their phone could post screenshots or a list of the menus? I've been blindly checking and unchecking to change things which is not working too well.
Hacker Keyboard
I tried GO Keyboard, but it had a little too much animation for my liking. I did a bit of Googling, and I found Hacker's Keyboard. The version on the Market requires a newer version of Android than we have on the Nook, but I found an apk here: http://code.google.com/p/hackerskeyboard/issues/detail?id=57 that is redone for 2.1. Been running it for a day now, and it seems to work great.

yes, hacker's keyboard seems to be the best for nook. unfortunately it is dark. It would be great to have white skin (similar to standard nook keyboard).

For those who have been able to install Hackers Keyboard, could you give a rundown on how you did it?
I copied it to /system/app, rebooted, and installed it but it still does not show up as a choice in keyboard selection in Nook Color Tools.
I installed the version from the above post.
Thank you

Delete that file from system, reboot, install as normal apk, then copy the installed apk from data/app to system/app, reboot. Then if apk is ok it will work.

Awesome, that worked!
I was copy/paste-ing the wrong apk.
Thank you
Hackers Keyboard works great for me.
I had trouble when in google talk app as it displayed only 2/3 of my keyboard but installed hackers keyboard and now it works fine
Hackers keyboard on android market wont work because its for 2.3+ android version but they made version for 2.1.
To install Hackers Keyboard:
I can't paste URLs links yet (dont have 8 posts) so go that link mentioned above and find comment # 8th, then download attached file "hkeyboard.apk" and:
1. plug in ur nook to pc
2. copy the hkeyboard.apk file somwhere on ur nook
3. unplug
4. install it normally (find and just run the file)
5. open a file manager that let u access root folder and let u see system files (i used "Root Browser")
6. go to /data/app (if it says the folder is empty u have to enable system files preview)
7. copy installed app (it should be somwhere on the bottom on the list)
8. go to system/app
9. paste the file
10. dont run the app yet! if you do uninstall it and go to point 1
11. reboot (turn off completly and power back on)
12. run the app and do what they ask u to do or (prefered way) go to Nook Color Tools (u should have it preinstalled when rooting) and change ur keyboard to hackers keyboard
13.done
14. if u want to go back go to old keyboard or any else Nook color Tools and change the keyboard
-------------------------------------------
Go keyboard works as well (to install do the same operations as mentioned above) but its to flashy and u dont see the text in preferences (u have to install it on ur phone and then go back and forth to see where u are).
BTW is there a way to see the text in Go Keyboard preference window? ive discovered that in some apps this happens to, is there an app for it? xD
PS Damn, my Nook just died after 3 days of intense usage
Where's my promised 2 months? ;O
2h hours left for it to eat up... gotta do something else for next 2h ;(

If it helps: that white unreadable text also appear in xda app when changing the theme to dark. The whole forum is then unreadable...

Try getting the android sdk and installing go keyboard on that. You can then see the text in there, and compare it to your nook.
Do that until Googie comes back with a new framework file.
Hackerskeyboard works like a charm. ;]
code[dot]google[dot]com/p/hackerskeyboard/issues/detail?id=57
The Hackers Keyboard is great, but does anybody have the same problem as mine.
The problem is that even the Hackers Keyboard includes additional languages, I'm unable to change between them using the sliding gesture over the space bar button. I think it has something to do with the multi-touch support.
I will send and email to the author two. I think It wold be nice if the keyboard has a dedicated button for language switch.
changing language by long pressing the space and then sliding sideways works for me, no problem at all but i changed some preferences before using the app and but i dont remember if i messed with language change options
Actually the mistake is all mine. I didn't realized that you have to add more than two languages. The language switch works, except it is not changing the language, but that is another problem

nook salchicha, some glitches...

I rooted the nook using the salchicha nooter, however I have found some glitches
1) Gmail app, when I try to compose an email it just quits after I have typed about 20 characters, its not a timing issue, is about the number of typed characters
2) Google talk, I just see the top two rows of the keyboard.
Am I the only one seeing this? I have 2 NST and I can repro this on both devices.
Thanks!
disclaimer: I would have typed this in the devs forum but the system wants me to 10 times here before I can post in the devs section :-(
I notice the same exact issues
I rooted with the manual procedure, gtalk has the same bug, but Gmail works fine.
As met67 said Gmail works correctly, Gtalk dosnt. Rooted and installed Gapps using the manual method, and lately the MinimalTouch.
Is there a way to repair this bug? Does it happen in NookToucher root as well?
I know the topic is a bit old, but there was no sense in making a new similar one.
Try installing GO keyboard.
I'm using SalsichaNooter and my Gmail works fine, but I had the same problem with Google Talk. Install Go Keyboard (u gotta have andorid installed somwhere else or else You won't see the text in preference and will be stuck with default settings) or install Hackers keyboard (modified vesrion for android 2.1).
Look this topic up for installing keyboard: (my post with instruction is on the second page)

SMS Return Key - TyphooN CyanogenMod 7.2.0.1 v3.8.7

Hi there,
I'm new with TyphooN CyanogenMod 7.2.0.1 v3.8.7 an I really like It.
But there is one thing with SMS that I don't like.
I need sometimes the "new line" function. That what happens if you use the Enter ( Return ) Key.
Is there a way to get the Return Key into the ALT menu?
Like in the Pictures attached.
The left Picture is the normal version.
The right Picture is what I want.
Can anybody help me to get this working?
With Kind regards
Aod
If its not featured by your keybord, try another one.
I´m using this one.
I think it is only a "problem" caused by the sms/mms app.
Because the return key is in some other apps available.
Is there nobody who can make this little change in the app?
So that the return key is in the ALT menu? Like in the screenshot postet above?
Dude... its a keyboad thing.
It works with the keyboard I posted above!
So...
I have downloaded HTC_IME_Hi22_Grey.apk and installed it.
After the installation I go to Settings -> Language and Keyboard
and set there the "arrow" on "HTC_IME mod"
But It is not working. I still have the default keyboard in every app
EDIT:
Okay, I found the Problem. In the SMS app I had to chose the new Keyboard.
It is working now. Thanks for your help

I got the same problem, but (for me) it seems to be a rom problem and I do not want to change the keyboard since I use neo-layout with ASK and with that keyboard it worked:
In my previsious rom ICS Paranoid Android I had an option in the sms app which allowed me to get a new line when hitting enter.
Now with JB PA (great Rom btw ) that option is gone (the enter key is still there but directly sends my message). Also tried to load a backup of the sms app via Titanium but no success.
My problem is that I am not yet allowed to post in dev forums but maybe you also got an idea?
