Spassy touch registration - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

Hello XDA! I bought a used (almost new though) HD2 a month or so ago, obviously I went straight ahead and flashed something else than WM 6.5 onto it...
However it has this weird issue with the touch being registered in an odd way sometimes...
Once in a while it will register a touch although I'm not touching the screen, other times it will freak out and register random touches all over the screen...
I notice this especially whenever i type...
(Look at the attachment for an example of this behavior captured with the pointer location in dev tools)
Is this a software bug in Android or is it my digitizer that needs replacement?
Thanks in advance

No one knows?

Never encountered a bug like this. So I have to say its your screen freaking out. Common problem with hd2 when they get overheated.
But you can always try other roms to see how it responds then.

Or possibly you accidentally touched the screen at the edge with your palm? I've done that loads of times before, and the HD2 only supports 2 fingers (also, it does this really badly from my experience).
I've noticed that I have to text slower than I actually can because it just doesn't register all of the points clearly enough :/

I've tried a bunch of different roms but they all seem to do it, I don't remember whether or not WP7 also did it though...
Overheated? hmm maybe because it does seem to happen more frequently when i text a lot but it might just be because i get more frustrated by it.

Perhaps, I'll have to see if i can replicate it with the phone lying on the table and only using my finger...

i sometimes have this problem too, but only when i have sweaty fingers..
i think it's the old generation digitizer. it's like drop of sweat are lying on the screen, making it freak out, cause the digitizer doesn't know where it gets touched.. so it jumps from here to there, and back and then somewhere else..
it always happens to me when im playing games on the pc:
i get a sms, i want to answer. i forget that my hands are sweaty after 2h of gaming and the screen freaks out. UNTIL.... i clean my hands and the screen on a tissue or so..
lol it even happens sometimes that it types something by itself, then sends it... >.<!!
probably you have sweaty hands too when this happens?
just try to clean the screen when it happens.. it could help

My Hero does the weirdest thing...

Sometimes, I'll place the handset down on a table or whatever, and completely of it's own accord, the screen will scroll right to the second page. Then a couple seconds later, it'll scroll right again to the third, and fourth. I'll pick it up and swipe back to the home screen and put it back down, and it'll do the same thing again. Basically.... wtf?
Sometimes it does it in menus aswell, scrolling down lists one by one every few seconds when the thing isn't even in my hands.
Has anyone else experienced this? I've had a couple of replacement handsets and it's done it on all of them!

It has happened to mine, intermittently. I was hoping that it was just a little piece of grit under the trackball and that it would stop, but now you've got me worried that it is a common fault. Mine is an unlocked white in the UK, bought from Devicewire and delivered around 10 days ago...
Yup, I can comfirm it has happened to me with 3 white sim free Heros. It can happen when the device is completely undisturbed so i'm assuming it's some weird software glitch.
I can't even identify what causes it, to recreate the conditions. Seems totally random.

Hopefully a (rapid) firmware upgrade will sort it...
Could it be something on the touch screen?
I think I have seen this too! Do we all have screen protectors on? I do on my Hero....
It seems to me like the people widget caused me some issues. I have removed it and the device is faster and this bug hasn't appeared for me at all since.

Screen protector, yes. And the People widget (which I find very useful!)
Speaking about really weird things going on with the Hero. I can contribute with some funky stuff too:
When having my Hero near/under my mousecable the mousepointer (on the monitor) gets its own life. It starts moving randomly and begins to scroll the pages up and down in my browser WITHOUT me touching anything. I do have a cable connected mouse (USB). The phone has wifi, GPS and Network activated. I have not yet tested what happens with those turned off though.
Haha this is getting interesting. I noticed some mousepointer jitter when I was using the PC at work today, with my Hero nearby. I'll investigate more today.
Mine doesn't have a screen protector, but I do use the people widget on my second page. I'll remove it and see if it makes a difference to the spontaneous scrolling.
I just got my white unlocked hero 3 days ago and I just noticed this problem for the first time. The home screen would move over 1 or 2 screens without me even doing anything. Im wondering if it was major lag from previous movements I made. Im sure this is a software bug, does anyone know if HTC releases software updates for their android devices? I just switched from an iphone and hope they would release updates and fixes like apple did when something was wrong with a software release.
This phone is what... a week since launch day? We are early adopters and will find bugs. There'll be an update soon I'm pretty sure.
I think there is some interference with Wifi/Other radio and the Hero screen.
When i put mine on my desk next to my PC i cannot press all buttons on the touch screen but the wheel and hardware keys still work. When i move it 1m away from my PC this behavior is gone.
This problem happened to me when I had wet hands. All I did was wipe the hero dry and it worked fine again.

This is due to the phones aggressively high SAR value (it's really really high). I would think twice before putting this phone in your pant pockets if you ever want to have chidren

Wow, really? I already have 2 so going to keep this in my pocket from now on!!!
Aaaaaaaand HTC didn't bother fixing this in the new rom. The T9 keyboard input bug and huge lag are also unchanged.
I can confirm that this odd bug still lurks around in the official 2.73.405.5 build.
It has been suggested that it migh be due to dirt inside the trackbal housing but then why would the homescreen suddenly scroll on its own without being touched? Maybe a sensor glitch? I don't know what solution HTC are using to read the movements of the trackball though... one thing is for sure; it's not a good one....
I'm 100% sure now it's not a hardware issue. It's happened on multiple Heros I've used, not long out the box either. The only thing I've noticed that indicates any kind of pattern to the apparent randomness is that it gets a lot worse when there's a lot of mobile data transfer going on. One time I physically couldn't get it to stay on the homescreen long enough to click an icon.
Just pitching in, exact same problem here. Very strange that everyone gets it to the right :/
Just notice on mine too, some automovement in menu and home
Upgraded yesterday to new firmware (modaco)
Could be an increase of trackball sensibili? I see a settings to tweak it on blackberry device...on android?

my phone uses touch screen its self, its auto controllig it self

hi all, some times, i dont know if its a weird rom issues or dust or even the wind, but some times ill finish what im doing on the phone then the menu or what ever im on will start doing weird **** like im touching it, but im not, is this just my handset or everyone.
say im in a picture and stop doing what im doing the pic might just randomly flick up/down till i exit with end key, same as all other apps things gets randomly selected lol
This happens to my unit also sometimes.
For me, I think that it only happens when connected to the usb cable.

Did you change the device name to "skynet"?
lmao.. that sounds strange!
This isn't strange at all. I'm working with many capacitive screens and whenever you have a lot of interferences (static charges, ground), the screen treats them as inputs. The bigger the screen, the more sensitive it becomes.
One solution is to reduce the sensor threshold, but for the Leo, you may not be able to configure the sensor...

when can we expect a new rom from htc, maybe it will solve the issues
I think your device is broken, i have had the same problem and i swapt my device for another one and now i don't have the problem anymore.
So if it happens often you should go back to the shop you've bought it.
It's happened once to me (in Opera) in several days of quite intensive use (love this phone ).
Having the same problem with my device. For no apparent reason, it would have a mind of its own and constantly trigger parts near the centre of the screen, it got quite freaky when it kept hitting 2 for me when I was dialling a number.
Will be popping into store to get it changed tomorrow (if they have stock).
same here, screen sensitivity is way too high. Hope a fix comes out for this
Had my phone exchanged today, new one running smoothly!

Did google fix the sreen problem after the upgrade?

Hi, Just wonder if you still have the screen problem (register the wrong place when click) after the upgrade.
No. You should check out the humongous thread on google support forums. Googe have now abandned even giving updates on this serious problem.
http://www.google.com/support/forum...8e&hl=en&fid=04134c63c784258e00047fdfe09ae547
p.s. no fix in ere36b either (as im running that now and still experience this problem at random)
I don't understand this issue, I just don't see it on mine at all, no matter what ROM I install ... there has to be something more to this than a simple fault across all handsets ... either select faulty ones or some other factor. Mine just works 100% as expected at all times.
That said I have had no 3G issues either, no matter what radio version I use. Perhaps I am lucky ?
I think its because people are touching the edge of the screen while pressing with the other causing it to register incorrectly

That is not it, there are plenty of videos that show the touchsreen misfiring while just laying on the table. Also, the way I hold my phone I am never touching the glass surface other than with the one finger doing the touching.
With regards to some people not seeing it, this issue is very random. I can go for days without noticing it and then out of the blue it would come back, most annoying when it happens while typing something.
There is another somewhat related issue with the sensor on the n1. If you download an app called multi touch paint and try to draw two parallel lines simultaneously from say top left corner down to bottom right you will see that the lines are not straight at all and full of zigzags. Only way that this sensor recognizes multiple lines properly is if you draw perfectly vertical or horizontal lines.
There is also a discussion on developer groups where game developers are pointing out this very problem of multi toch totally being screwed up where it switches axis causing your touch to register in completely the wrong place. From the comments of the android engineer it makes it seem that the sensor hardware is just like that, cheap and low quality.

I know, I have seen all these videos and attempted to re-create many times to test I have never seen this issue once.
Don't get me wrong I can understand it being a mare of you are having it, but I just dont ever see it.
after trolling the Google thread, it seems to me there are several scenarios everyone is lumping into "screen issues" and it's going to be hard to pin it down to one source
Mine happens (touch registers on the wrong part of the screen) when I am using certain apps (Ringdroid, Browser mostly) - a couple of things clears it up ; press the sleep button, kill all tasks if you have an app for it, or change to landscape mode. For other people it's the soft keys and/or much worse. Since mine clears up with a specific action, I tend to think it is software related.
With mine it used randomly to happen but only in the Launcher (never again since 36B). I couldn't point anywhere but if I selected any app with the trackball and opend ist everything worked fine again, also the keyboard on the launcher worked well. For me it seems that it has something to do with the launcher.

love vs hate - screen sensitivity (mostly hate)

I loved everything about this Phone until today. Today is the day I tried to access ebay from my Phone. Brought up the page in only a few seconds, good start. Pinch to zoom working well, excellent.
username in without too much trouble.
Password.... it took me 20 mins to get this in due to the ****ty sensitivity on the screen. I was almost at the point of throwing it against the wall.
I have the sensitivity fix installed, is there proper solution for this problem or some way to make the screen much more accurate for typing?

what was the problem?
clicking the password field (I just find you have to be quite zoomed in, in opera it seems to ignore clicks to fields unless the fields have been zoomed in on.)
or typing the password on the keyboard because it has no auto text correction? (I dont really find this a problem to be honest, I use a large number of numbers, letters uppercase and lowercase and symbols and aslong as I dont type it too fast and think about each key I will always type it right first time)
getting into the fields wasnt too bad with zoom. The problem was multiple taps. When I type a key sometimes It also puts on all the keys around it, seems to be a bit random - I havent got sausage fingers either.
It may be worse for me as I had a touch HD before this and the resistive screen was very accurate, may just need more time to acclimatise.
you probably should go into notes and try drawing lines around, if they aren't really straight or if by pressing in one spot you have the cursoir drawing all around your fingertip, then it's probably still something to do with warranty servicing
Me, on the other side, never ever had any problem with sensitivity at all, all the contrary I think that if I had to install the sensitivity patch it would be way more unpleasant to use the phone, I like the sensitivity as it is now
:S hmm that sounds a bit weird, I don't really have much of a problem with key accuracy.
are you typing your password too fast? might help if you slow it down, instead of retyping it ten times, take 5 times longer to type it the first time and you have already cut down the time it takes you by a lot
Get the original stylus from HTC and try again. If it happens with the stylus too the screen is fu.....
This is going to be a random suggestion
Do you have any Task Managers installed? Such as Dutty's/Touch X or Appelflap's or anyone that put an icon in the top right of your screen.
If so, try uninstalling them and see if this a has any positive affect on your typing.
We'll deal with a replacement Task Manager later
when I move quickly accross the page it is fine, when moving slowly its absolutely terrible, akin to sizeometer earthquake 9 on the ricter scale. I am using Laurentius26 GoldEdition V2.1, I will flash back to stock and see what that is like.
this is what I am getting, exactly..!

Have you tried using a different rom, if a new rom doesnt fix it there must be some hardware failure since that is not standard behaviour for the screen. I have just performed the same test on my phone and I get near perfect straight lines even while varying the pressure on the screen.
You say you have a fix installed is it this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=604831
I had the none ghost fix installed but realised I have both problems. Just uninstalled and installed the ghost+sense fix and reset....
no change
will try a new ROM, if no change then I am going to send it back to VODA, this was a "nearly new" phone on their swap scheme, got it free on £20.month, seemed to good to be true and was.
Watch this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=egVn2HvexhQ&feature=related). It may be the case that your HD2 needs to be sent for repair as it may just be defective.
Did you try running no task managers? I presume that it did not help.
Send it off and explain it's unusable in this state.
put stock new ROM on from Voda, a lot better by far. It must either be the ROM, the fix or Zoomer which is causing this. I wonder if anyone else has has this problem, i will log this on the ROM thread.
still having problems with this, not as bad as before, think i am going to send it back and cancel the contract, I think this phone although beautiful is not fit for purpose.

Reduced Touch Response

Good Morning Guys,
I have a strange experience to tell to me fellow users. After using my Samsung Focus, I placed it next to me, momentarily, on the sofa. With the device still on, no lock screen, I turned to it and tried to flick the start screen up to get to the marketplace (which is on the bottom of my start screen). There was no response.
I picked up the device and the start screen scrolled to the bottom when I flicked to the bottom, as I normally experience.
I placed the phone back on the sofa and tried to perform the same task, but the screen was unresponsive. I propped the phone up against the back of the sofa and tried to the flick the screen up, no response. I placed the phone on a wooden end table - the screen responded to my touch.
Has anyone else experienced anything similar?
Thanks for your time,
M
Sometimes this happens to me. It seems my thumb gets better response than my finger, but maybe it's because I hold it up. Doesn't happen often, but it is a little annoying. Hopefully it will be addressed in an update.
THanks for your input. Maybe we need to have a greater electrical field
Shocking eh?
Same thing sometimes my phone thinks I'm clicking on something when scrolling. It just stops and opens w/e I was over. Also noticed it only happens when I use a finger that isn't my thumb

This is exactly what happens to me; however, for me it has to be surrounded by either fabric or placed on paper (although there is some slight touch responsiveness on paper).
However, if the device is flat on it's back and I hold the edges with my other hand, the screen responsiveness returns.
I was wondering whether electrical grounding and/or static electrical buildup is an issue.
Thanks for everyone's responses so far. Once I get a few more peoples responses (and maybe some suggestions !!) I may forward the issue to Samsung.
M
I have noticed this same issue with my Focus as well. At first I thought it was just in my head but it happens all the time when I lay the phone flat on my bed.
All of your situations have happened to me.
It has to do with whatever happens when you're holding it. Touch responsiveness and accuracy go way, way, way up when holding it. But if it's lying on something non-conductive or even in a dock of some sort, it gets funky.
I mention some experiences of my own in the Multi-touch Issues thread.
I"ve submitted the question to Samsung via their Community Q&A webpage. The question will show up in approximately 72 hours.

Interestingly enough, my experience on my Focus is the opposite of that..
i.e. when I place it on the table - the phone is *less* responsive compared to placing it on my desk mat (leather) - which is is more responsive.
Overall - it's not as bad as the video. The phone is just less accurate (i.e. I swipe the phone to move the tiles and it opens the program at the start of my swipe instead of moving the tiles). In the hand, the phone is very responsive - and - if I touch the top/bottom of the phone with another finger on the same hand as my "swiping" finger - it's responsive no matter what.
I too find the focus touch sometimes screws up, it happens randomly, also the browser seems to scroll not as smoothly as at first.
I'm really looking forward to some Microsoft updates, but overall the phone has been really good, I've even got adjusted to the onscreen keyboard.
Using focus now.
Its also the first phone that works well enough I have used where I don't mind browsing my morning sites on and not miss my laptop
The touch buttons really piss me off though, I always press them accidentally.
I just discovered this issue recently and its very annoying to me. Seems to be a problem to the ground of the device so I feel it is a hardware problem. Just watched that video of the HTC Incredible doing the same thing and it seems to be what the case is. Girlfriend had to brag about saying "oh iPhone doesn't have that problem blah blah blah" and started using it on the same table.
Wow its like you guys read my mind. I was showing off the phone to my brother and it was laying on the kitchen table when it started having the same exact issues. Could it be a hardware problem? Im about 2 second away from returning this phone tomorrow. Too many little annoyances.
This guy has the same problem on his Samsung omnia 7 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o52nzpzg8Aw
Haven't forgotten about this thread. I have been checking the Samsung website everyday for my question; however, it has failed to show up. In the next 2 days I'll be contacting Samsung directly via telephone to discuss this issue.

It's got the opposite problem. It only works when you don't touch it.
My brothers Focus either A) just started doing this, or B) he just noticed it.
