My Hero does the weirdest thing... - Hero, G2 Touch General

Sometimes, I'll place the handset down on a table or whatever, and completely of it's own accord, the screen will scroll right to the second page. Then a couple seconds later, it'll scroll right again to the third, and fourth. I'll pick it up and swipe back to the home screen and put it back down, and it'll do the same thing again. Basically.... wtf?
Sometimes it does it in menus aswell, scrolling down lists one by one every few seconds when the thing isn't even in my hands.
Has anyone else experienced this? I've had a couple of replacement handsets and it's done it on all of them!

It has happened to mine, intermittently. I was hoping that it was just a little piece of grit under the trackball and that it would stop, but now you've got me worried that it is a common fault. Mine is an unlocked white in the UK, bought from Devicewire and delivered around 10 days ago...

Yup, I can comfirm it has happened to me with 3 white sim free Heros. It can happen when the device is completely undisturbed so i'm assuming it's some weird software glitch.
I can't even identify what causes it, to recreate the conditions. Seems totally random.

Hopefully a (rapid) firmware upgrade will sort it...

Could it be something on the touch screen?

I think I have seen this too! Do we all have screen protectors on? I do on my Hero....
It seems to me like the people widget caused me some issues. I have removed it and the device is faster and this bug hasn't appeared for me at all since.

Screen protector, yes. And the People widget (which I find very useful!)

Speaking about really weird things going on with the Hero. I can contribute with some funky stuff too:
When having my Hero near/under my mousecable the mousepointer (on the monitor) gets its own life. It starts moving randomly and begins to scroll the pages up and down in my browser WITHOUT me touching anything. I do have a cable connected mouse (USB). The phone has wifi, GPS and Network activated. I have not yet tested what happens with those turned off though.

Haha this is getting interesting. I noticed some mousepointer jitter when I was using the PC at work today, with my Hero nearby. I'll investigate more today.
Mine doesn't have a screen protector, but I do use the people widget on my second page. I'll remove it and see if it makes a difference to the spontaneous scrolling.

I just got my white unlocked hero 3 days ago and I just noticed this problem for the first time. The home screen would move over 1 or 2 screens without me even doing anything. Im wondering if it was major lag from previous movements I made. Im sure this is a software bug, does anyone know if HTC releases software updates for their android devices? I just switched from an iphone and hope they would release updates and fixes like apple did when something was wrong with a software release.

This phone is what... a week since launch day? We are early adopters and will find bugs. There'll be an update soon I'm pretty sure.

I think there is some interference with Wifi/Other radio and the Hero screen.
When i put mine on my desk next to my PC i cannot press all buttons on the touch screen but the wheel and hardware keys still work. When i move it 1m away from my PC this behavior is gone.

This problem happened to me when I had wet hands. All I did was wipe the hero dry and it worked fine again.

This is due to the phones aggressively high SAR value (it's really really high). I would think twice before putting this phone in your pant pockets if you ever want to have chidren

Wow, really? I already have 2 so going to keep this in my pocket from now on!!!

Aaaaaaaand HTC didn't bother fixing this in the new rom. The T9 keyboard input bug and huge lag are also unchanged.

I can confirm that this odd bug still lurks around in the official 2.73.405.5 build.
It has been suggested that it migh be due to dirt inside the trackbal housing but then why would the homescreen suddenly scroll on its own without being touched? Maybe a sensor glitch? I don't know what solution HTC are using to read the movements of the trackball though... one thing is for sure; it's not a good one....

I'm 100% sure now it's not a hardware issue. It's happened on multiple Heros I've used, not long out the box either. The only thing I've noticed that indicates any kind of pattern to the apparent randomness is that it gets a lot worse when there's a lot of mobile data transfer going on. One time I physically couldn't get it to stay on the homescreen long enough to click an icon.

Just pitching in, exact same problem here. Very strange that everyone gets it to the right :/

Just notice on mine too, some automovement in menu and home
Upgraded yesterday to new firmware (modaco)
Could be an increase of trackball sensibili? I see a settings to tweak it on blackberry device...on android?

hi all, some times, i dont know if its a weird rom issues or dust or even the wind, but some times ill finish what im doing on the phone then the menu or what ever im on will start doing weird **** like im touching it, but im not, is this just my handset or everyone.
say im in a picture and stop doing what im doing the pic might just randomly flick up/down till i exit with end key, same as all other apps things gets randomly selected lol
This happens to my unit also sometimes.
For me, I think that it only happens when connected to the usb cable.

Did you change the device name to "skynet"?
lmao.. that sounds strange!
This isn't strange at all. I'm working with many capacitive screens and whenever you have a lot of interferences (static charges, ground), the screen treats them as inputs. The bigger the screen, the more sensitive it becomes.
One solution is to reduce the sensor threshold, but for the Leo, you may not be able to configure the sensor...

when can we expect a new rom from htc, maybe it will solve the issues
I think your device is broken, i have had the same problem and i swapt my device for another one and now i don't have the problem anymore.
So if it happens often you should go back to the shop you've bought it.
It's happened once to me (in Opera) in several days of quite intensive use (love this phone ).
Having the same problem with my device. For no apparent reason, it would have a mind of its own and constantly trigger parts near the centre of the screen, it got quite freaky when it kept hitting 2 for me when I was dialling a number.
Will be popping into store to get it changed tomorrow (if they have stock).
same here, screen sensitivity is way too high. Hope a fix comes out for this
Had my phone exchanged today, new one running smoothly!

[Q] G2 Screen Issues

Hello,
I've been having touch screen issues lately, since i rooted and switched to CM 6.1 a couple of weeks ago. The screen will work perfectly for a little while, but will inevitably stop responding. I'm using launcherpro, though i don't believe that's the issue- it happens regardless of which launcher I'm running (I've tried others and experienced the same issue. The optical scroll pad will still "sort of" work- better than the screen (which will respond to the occasional touch after the problem begins, but barely does). If I reboot, the problem will usually go away for a while again, but will recur. I wind up needing to fix the issue once or twice a day. I don't think it's a hardware problem because the reset fixes it, so I assume it is then software. Also, i don't remember having this problem with the stock rom. Has anyone else experienced this, or does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks!
Dunno how useful this will be, but have you tried reflashing CM?

Same problem here. But I've noticed sometimes if I'm using the phone not in my hand (on car dock or just on table) this problem seems to happen more...but when I hold it in my palm then works fine.
But sometimes it just becomes unresponsive. Am running virtous's rom on my g2. But I can remember having the same issue when running cm on my g1 days too. Reboot always fixed it, just gets annoying.
Anyone have fixes to this? Thanks!!

I personally use GV 7 or sparksmod and. Never had a problem, these are the best roms I think for this phone.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
Been having this exact problem for weeks now. And I believe it is a hardware problem, probably some sort of short in one of the ribbon cables or the digitizer itself. Occasionally, actually 85% of the time I'd try to open an apparently and the phone would act if I held my finger down and then the apparently icon gets selected...very annoying cus it happens over and over a couple times, all I can do is keep trying until it does what its supposed to. Also with the on screen keyboard when I'm texting it'll act like I'm holding down on one of the letters and keeps bringing up the special characters to that letter...or ill tap delete to delete a spelling error and it'll end up holding it down and deleting my whole damn text and I can't stop it.
At first when this first started happening I could simply tap the screen and it would stop the crap it was doing and work fine. As time went on I noticed I kept having to hit it harder and harder for it to correct it. Wellllll guess what? Last night it was acting up horribly and I slammed my closed hand against it while it was on the desk and it cracked the LCD screen and now the phone is completely useless, even though the outer touchscreen is perfectly fine.
The restarting of the phone also usually fixed it for me as well but only for a few minutes.. which also makes me think its a short because after the phone is turned off whatever part is shorting out, that circuit is closed and just takes time until you press on the screen in whatever spot to cause the two parts to touch and create the short all over again.
Anyways that's my story...just don't get angry and slam down on the screen lol. This is my 2nd G2 and I'm tired of it, probably just going to get a nexus s or just go back to the nexus one, atleast it was reliable.

if you open the battery cover u can see that there are connectors that closes the whole circuit, so when u are holding the phone the back cover works like a grounding area that makes the screen responce to your touch. Acapacitive screen works like this: when you touch in any area on the screen, you simply are breaking the electrical field that the screen has, the screen "feels" where u break it and tells the operating system.
the electrical field depends on the human body a bit to make the circuit complete, so when u touch the metal parts of the phone, the screen works like it is designed.

Screen sticking

Anyone else having a weird, intermittent issue with the touch screen seemingly not working right
IE: I try to scroll and instead it makes a tap where my finger lands. Unlocking the screen doesn't work 50% of the time because the lockscreen will just lag out and I have to sleep/re-wake the device
This happens on stock and after i rooted to tiamats rom

Is this accompanied by screen dimming? Did this start after the update to HC3.2?

Your device may not be grounded. It's a common problem with touch screen devices. Does this happen when you're holding the device in your hands?

I really don't know, let me do some testing and see what circumstances it is replicated under.
How would grounding be determined? Its not charging...
I do have it in a silicon/rubber case. Would that be a problem?
Just for the sake of satisfying my curiosity - if you are experiencing this issue while your Xoom is docked - try placing your fingers on the back of your Xoom and typing with your thumbs.
I am trying to resolve a similar issue that I only encounter while my Xoom is docked at one place in the world - my work. Nowhere else does it do this.
I have installed a power conditioner, with no effect. It happens whenever the power is plugged into the dock. If I use an external power supply it goes away (batteries). I did switch off the florescent lighting and it is better, so it may be EM related. especially since it is a *capacitive* screen.
I have also read of people with other capacitive touch screen devices have the same issue when it is not held in their hands.
Let me know either way.
Thanks,
Frans

I have seen issue on gtab where some roms/kernel where having issue with screen calibration, there was a calibration files that could be created in the root with the name calibration.ini and upon reboot it was fixed, I do not know if this is valid for a xoom tho...

Well you bring an interesting point. The device was in my hands but I was not actually touching it... It had a rubber sleeve on it.
I since got the Motorola hard case which has some areas exposed and I also disabled the lock screen, and I have not been able to replicate the problem at all.
The device was docked at one point, charging, and the problem showed up aagin (recalling from memory). The fix was to power off the screen and re-wake the device. This did involve touching it, so...maybe its an electrical thing?

I had this problem with the stock 3.2 ROM. I haven't done any calibration, and don't think I need to: it works perfectly majority of the time.
I'll reenable the lockscreen and try to replicate it again.
Okay I think I'm onto the problem
I opened the case just now, still lock screen disabled, pressed just the power button and the touchscreen was acting up again.. couldn't slide to scroll, but could tap/point only
I then put my thumb on the side, as if naturally holding it without a case, and it started working normally again without any kind of power cycle.
Thoughts?
Have you dropped or jarred your Xoom a lot? Look for threads I started in this forum, I have one that explains this issue and includes a fix. My Xoom is still working flawlessly. I'd link it but pre-calculus is about to start.

I bought the XOOM second hand from someone who claimed they hardly used it. Right now sitting infront of me, the bottom right, on the back edge, there is a small pressured crease as if it was dropped (looks like the corner of my phone when i dropped it on tile).
I personally have not dropepd it, but I throw this thing onto my bed all the time, it fell out of the dock onto my hard desk once, so yeah its been knocked around.
Will doing that mod void the warranty?
I found no warranty stickers or screws when I disassembled it. The back cover is made to slide down so that Moto can do the 4G upgrade, so I doubt they want to be fooling with that type of thing anyways. I can't say for certain that sticking a piece of foam in the back of your Xoom won't void the warranty, but I can say that it fixes the issue(which also could be covered by warranty if you can get someone to believe you've got the issue, I however could not, so I had to take it upon myself).
Alright
I just ran into the problem again playing a game.. seemed like the right half of my screen just stopped working intermittently. Kept playing and it returned to normal.
I may pop it open and try the foam thing. I'm pretty good with disassembling laptops.. I can't see this being much harder.

Flaky Touchscreen (Just mine?)

I'm wondering if other users have experienced this. I find that after spending some time with the Transformer 300, especially when moving the machine on and off the keyboard dock, the screen will start to act flaky. In some cases what I'm seeing are "phantom touches." The home screens will start wobbling back and forth, as if someone is half-swiping them. In one case, I was playing the game "Sentinel 3" and the screen started zooming in and out as if someone were pinching it. That's with the tablet undocked. With the tablet docked, sometimes what I'll find is that the screen will become un-responsive. I'll click areas like the app drawer ad nothing will happen.
This is all resolved by shutting the machine down and bringing it back up again. This has happened to me numerous times, enough, in fact that I'm pretty convinced I'll have to take it back to Best Buy. My only question at this point is whether to return or exchange.
The fact that shutting it down fixes the issues suggests to me that it's a software glitch, which could potentially be fixed with a future patch. But that also means that exchanging the device likely won't do me any good.
So I'm posting this to get some feedback from the community and see if others are experiencing these same issues. If not, then maybe I got flaky hardware (a loose connector or something).

I agree it sounds like software since the reboot fixes it but your issue doesn't seem that common. I've seen a couple now that are somewhat similar but not like the pervasive left screen glitch. I would try an exchange personally.
Sent from my ASUS Transformer Pad TF300T using Tapatalk 2
Well sorry to burst the bubble but doing a reboot to resolve the problem doesn't really rule out a hardware issue. A hardware issue can be intermittent, there's nothing that states that it must be permanent. Furthermore it might not be the rebooting that resolves it but the time that passes. In other words, the problem might occur only at 6:45PM and last for 30 seconds, if you reboot it you might not experience it again. You have no time machine so there's no way for you to really figure out when it will occur and for how long to find out what's causing it.
It's all tricky. Some errors can occur both due to software and hardware so it's hard to determine which is actually causing it for a specific issue.
But a few things lead me to believe it's hardware.
1. Why aren't more people experiencing it? A software issue results in far greater people experiencing it, especially for a group as homogenous as TF300T owners who all own the same device. The conditions are already ripe and unless a third party app is causing it, everyone is running the same code and therefore more likely to experience the problem. A hardware fault would have to be deeply ingrained into the construction, the likelihood they had let it progress that far is unlikely. Instead, it seems like a QC issue which only affects a few individuals like you.
2. Touch screen issues have been noticed in not just this device but others. It can take on the habit of registering ghost input, no input, etcetera. Happens on the Nook Color too. Happens when the device is unplugged but mostly when it is plugged in to a power source especially the wall mains. If you're not getting it from your wall mains, it's probably the device. If it is your wall mains there's nothing you can do about it.
3. There's nothing random about handling touch screen events so I find it hard to believe this is caused by software. It's more likely it's a bad touch screen feeding false events to good touch event code. The likelihood code is doing this and doing this where only you experience it and not many others (actually I've seen no other people complain about this for the TF300T and two other people complain about it for the TF101) is really low.
IMO: Just exchange it. If you make the mistake of never exchanging it you'll be stuck on that boat forever. It's probably poor QC. If the second one has the issue, that bumps up the likelihood it's a software issue as these issues in hardware are very rare and I don't think two possible units experiencing it is very common unless it was a far more common software issue. If it occurred again I would either exchange it again or get a refund.
So yesterday I flexed the screen (basically pushed up ay the back, center with my fingers and down at thes sides with my thumbs) and the tablet started bounging between the home screen and the app tray at regular, 1/2 second intervals. back and forth, back and forth.
I also discovered that if I hold the tablet in portrait mode with my left thumb about 1/3 of the way up and sqeeze, the screen becomes completely un-responsive. if I ease up the pressure, it registers touches. I discovered this by readong a post by another user that had the issue (though I think in his case his screen would go haywire).
So I'm definitely taking this back to the store. The only question is whether its an exchange or a refund. I absolutely love the concept of this tagblet, and when it works its glorious. So if I can find one that doesn't suffer from these issues I'd love to hold on to it.
Check the running apps it's most likely mem related
Hi,
I've had two of these for about a week now, one for my self, and one for my 10 year old. I had to go into settings and shut off all kinds of stuff that was attempting to auto updated right off the bat. These don't come with a ton of memory right out of the box.
If you press on the bottom left corner of your screen the two little squares, it will show you what is loaded in memory. Every thing that comes up on that list on the left hand side is a opened application that is actively eating up your memory.
The only way to clear these apps once opened is to power the unit off, and then back on.
On both mine and my sons, I shut off all the auto updates, there are a bunch of different settings, you really need to go through them and look too many to list but a bunch should be turned off.
I don't have any issues at this point, neither does my 10 year old, he's always playing games like Fruit Ninja and normally has three or 4 youtube windows in the back going with in 5 minutes of turning the thing on and no issues.
Mine I use more for business related stuff, and also no issues. However right out of the box the first day it was a bit flaky. They both run smooth now.
I'm just waiting on some one to give me a root app for .26 since the second I turned these both on they updated the OTA firmware which took them off .17
Anyway I hope this helps.
Good luck.

Sorry didn't see the post about issues with where you pressed the screen. That one sounds like you may need to take it back in to have serviced. I tried what you said with squeezing the screen, and pressing the back in different spots. Nope, no issues like that. I would say it requires service.

The button you refer to in the bottom left is the multi-tasking button. If you press it and swipe an app, it will be removed from that list. Android usually runs fine with lots of apps sitting in ram. The only real exception to this is apps that are poorly coded and will try to run in the background all the time.
If you want root look in the development section, there is a simple utility to let you downgrade to .17, root, voodoo backup, update, and restore.
I have same/similar problem see other thread

See here for my symptoms.
So, last night I took the tablet back to Best Buy and exchanged it (actually, had to drive to a second Best Buy because the one where I bought mine was sold out!). So far so good. Though I've only had the replacement a short time, I'm feeling good about this one. No hiccups so far. And upon running the initial setup I remembered that even during the initial setup of my first one, the screen had become unresponsive once. All in all I've got a good feeling about this one. And I do desperately want it to work because, man, I love the concept and execution of this thing.
Have you tried the creaky test with the new one to see if it's a manufacturing issue indicative of all TF300T's or whether it was just an isolated QC incident?

Alert Slider Weirdness

I have noticed, maybe not from the very start (I don't remember, actually), that I often need to slide my alert slider all the way up and down before it would actually start to "react" and put my device into the desired state of alerts.
For example, I need to slide it all up, then down, before it would actually start to register the position I want it to be and put the phone in either 'vibrate' or 'silent' or 'normal' mode.
The thing is, after I do this and continue to slide it, there is absolutely no problem for it to register its position; it's only after I've not been using it for some time and only the first slide up or down, so I don't think it is HW-related but probably something SW. No, there are also no dust or particles in it, as I take extra care of my electronic devices and they are cleaned several times a day. Could it be kernel-related? (I use Kirisakura, but I noticed it with some others before too).
I've noticed this too couple of times. Putting the slider up does nothing. I slide it back down, nothing. Repeat two to three times and suddenly the phone starts responding, and goes trough all the modes when slider is moved. Came here to see if anyone else has had the same issues. Maybeit started with the last software update 10.5.11.IN11BA ? Stock kernel and ROM.

Interesting, that's exactly the issue I'm having, no idea what it's coming from.
Facing the same issue...any solution?
Also noticed a few times...
Haven't had this although I only use mine once a night and at times not in the day..
Slider seems to be of solid design, probably the same as previous 1+ models which themselves have been of good quality..
Quite odd, could if be debris? Seems like a tiny place for debris to be lodged though..
Have you altered what the positions do by any chance?

Nope, it happened immediately after I bought it, or hours after I started using it. So I'm not sure what caused the problem: a bootloader unlock, a root, a module, an app, an update? Can't say. What I'm sure of, though, is that it's not dust or debris or physical damage to my unit (I'm quite fussy about my phones' cleanliness and they're completely covered by cases and screen protectors).
Never had this problem with my previous 1+ devices.
The issue went away with system update to version 10.5.12.IN11BA. So for me this issue was only present in the software version 10.5.11.IN11BA.

If it's been happening since you got it then I'd have thought it's more than likely an actual fault..I'd have sent mine back.
