[Q] Backup Apps/Contacts and Flash - Milestone 2 General

Hey guys,
I want to flash my MS2 with the CM7 (ICS).
So, how can I save my apps/contacts and the other stuff from the original firmware?
Is there any tutorial or howto to save my apps/contacs, flash and then copy the old stuff on the new firmware?

I use Titanium backup for my apps and app data. google saves my calendar and contacts, and there are a couple of free sms/mms backup apps in the market. apparently mybackup root is a good one but i haven't personally tried it out.
both titanium and mybackup root are fully functional for your purposes as free versions.
as for flashing the rom, there are several tutorials on the milestone 2 development board.
after flashing the new rom, you will want to download titanium backup from the market and then restore all your old apps and some data from sd. then just use the other backup app for your sms stuff from sd. the app should have been restored by titanium so you don't have to download it again.
i like to carry the titanium apk around on my sd, so i can reset and restore everything even without an internet connection.

I`m using http://j.mp/scQKXM for backing up call log, sms with gosmspro (which i use as sms manager). Other data are either backed up with google account (calendars, contacts), or printed as QRcode (home wifi setting), or not important

Well thanks! Yesterday I backup all my stuff and flashed the CM7. I works nice, but now I have a question. Can I update the CM7, if a new vision will be released, without losing any data and files?
For example: Can I download teh update.zip, go to the recovery menu and apply update.zip.
After a restart i will be up to date?

Yes, just do wipe cache & dalvik afterwards and it will be ok - you'll not lose your data. But I recommend to do backup before update - in case the update will not work and you will have to do recovery (wipe data etc...).

Ah, nice. But in the Clockworkmod Recovery I have no option "wipe data".
But I have the option "wipe cache partition" and "wipe data/factory reset". so which option I must use instead of "wipe cache"?
I think "wipe data/factory reset" delete my personal stuff, like contacts, sms, ...?
And the other options delete the temp cache?

wipe cache refers to "wipe cache partition" of course - by wiping cache you will not lose your personal data nor apps, but it is recommended (or I should maybe say _needed_) when flashing firmware be udpate.zip Cache is only temporary - and it is here for system speed up. If you will delete it, it will automatically recreate, so no worry about cache.
wipe data refers to "wipe data/factory reset", this actually delete all your personal stuff, including sms, calls, contacts and apps - you don't have to do this, when updating CM to newer version of CM (you have to do this only when updating to CM from stock firmware)... But if something goes wrong, wipe data can be solution - and in that case you will lose your personal data - so it's good to have backup before flashing anything via CWM.

Thanks for the information.
You bring light into the darkness.

What's your flashing ritual

I use my wicca alter, light candels, use some soothing sandlewood incense.
No seriously, I have seen this asked several times so I thought I'd start a post on what you do when you flash a rom.
My setup is Clockwork 2.6.0.1, rom manager 3.0.0.7 and I mostly run CM7. This is my process for flashing nightlies:
1. Boot to recovery
2. Backup
3. Wipe Cache
4. Wipe Dalvik
5. Wipe Battery Stats
6. Reboot
7. Run Rom Manager
8. Rename backup
9. Download CM7 nightly and check the Gapps check box
10. Let Rom Manager do it's thing
11. Enjoy CM7 goodness.
If I'm flashing to something other than CM, it goes something like this:
1. Boot to recovery
2. Backup
3. Clear data and factory reset
4. Wipe Cache
5. Wipe Dalvik
6. Wipe Battery Stats
7. Installl rom from zip on SD
8. Reboot
I usually dont have any issues, ocassionally I get stuck at the HTC white screen but a battery pull and reboot clears it up.
So how do you flash?
Charge 100%
Backup Apps with important data with Titanium Backup.
Backup the rest with Astro File Manager
Reboot to Recovery
Nandroid Backup
Wipe Everything
Flash Rom
Flash Theme (If I'm using one)
Boot Up
Sync and set preferences
Restore Apps
No backups. Just wipe with Ra 2.3 and flash away.

Pretty much the same here, except after 7 I flash Calkulin's format all zip. I had some problems with clockwork not wiping everything a while back and now I'm paranoid about it.
*Take a fresh 100% battery off the external charger (my equivalent to opening a six pack)
*Backup contacts using v cards
*backup apps using titanium backup and app brain
*backup bookmarks using bookmarks to sd
*wipe dalvik, cache partition, and wipe data
*flash rom, boot it up then flash other stuff
*then retrieve v card with contacts back ana start connecting them to their facebook again
*restore apps with titanium and leave out apps idgaf about
*enjoy, I should have drank to myn's rls 5 lol

Hi,
Go to 8. ad recovery>backup and restore.
Make a NANDROID backup.
Install the new ROM.
Go back to 8. ad recovery>backup and restore.
Do an advanced restore of your data.
Reboot
make a nandroid backup, wipe data/factory reset, wipe dalvik cache, flash the new rom, in mgldr select advanced restore, restore data, restore sd-ext then reboot.
another way (but not safe always, after you make a nand backup you can try)
just wipe dalvik cache then in mgldr go to mounts and storage and wipe cache, then flash the new rom and reboot.
Nandroid backup is safer. you can also use Titanium Backup... It's free on Market.
I upgrade my ROM by wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache (NOT wipe data/factory reset) and flash upgraded version and I haven't any problems with upgrading
Or .. Read NDT's own thread, I have used his ROM before. He says exactly how to upgrade, I think in the 2nd or the 3rd post.

[Q] Stupid question

Hi,
I have an Iconia Tab A500 with CWM installed and sometime i switch on different ROM to test them.
Usually befoere making a full NANDROID restore i do only a "Wipe data" / "Wipe cache" / "Wipe dalvik" but sometime you can see on some post that you need in addition to format "/system /flexrom /data /cache, etc.."
So my stupid question, is it necessary to format each time i do a full restore or only to wipe.
In fact, what is the difference between "Wipe" and "Format" ?
Thx a lot for answer.
A developer could certainly give you a more accurate answer to your question than me but, as far as I know, wiping means erasing the data that you have added by yourself to the ROM (for example, your pseudos and passwords, apps, and so...), while formatting means erasing all the data that the developers have written originally.
Personally, when I restore a ROM, I never do a wiping nor a formatting, since the backup contains all the data of the ROM, afaik.

If you install RA Recovery, you only need to select in wipes "user data/factory reset", then do a dalvik wipe. This formats your partitions so no need to do 6 different things. System gets formatted when the rom installs.
so, wiping or formatting as no effect when you restore a backup because all is erased.. strange.. so why on most tutorial we ask to do a wipe ?
Strange...
Can you give me an example of tutorial where it is said that you have to do a wipe before a restore with CMW ?

To me this is a better safe than sorry situation. It's probably unnecessary and redundant but i'd rather wipe and format everything before i flash just to be sure im getting a clean base, rather than flash, have bugs, and have to go back into recovery and wipe anyway and reflash

you know I always understood that restoring did not require a wipe, but since I've started this tablet, I've noticed I get failed restore more often. I've started wiping before restore but sometimes it still fails.

You won't lose anything. Just make a CWM backup (as a failsafe, you shouldn't need it) then flash the new version over the old version. Don't do a wipe or anything like that, just flash it. After the update is completed, clear the cache partition (from the CWM menu) and the dalvik cache (in advanced in CWM) and reboot. First reboot may take some time but after that it should be as it was before, just with all of the updates to the ROM.
Just install new ROM
I have some situation like you have, Typhoon 3.7.0 update to 3.8.0! What I did is just pull the ROM to SD card, and then enter recovery choose " install a zip from sdcard" choose your files, and install and it just all set! Your personal data will not be delete!
i just installed this ROM from MIUI, didnt do task29, installed and wipe cache and dalvik.
i like this ROM but the Cynogen settings keeps giving me FC
anyone knows how to fix it without dong a wipe clean>?
also if i have to do task29 how to backup and restore my data? sorry noob here.

I don't quite understand your problem with Cyanogen settings, but to backup and restore just use the CWM backup. It will backup literally everything on your phone and any apps you have on your SD card. If you ONLY want to backup your app data and other data which you want to restore onto a different ROM, you can either:
1. Create a CWM backup and when restoring, go to advanced restore and restore data partition
2. Use Titanium Backup to backup apps, Super backup (I think that's what it's called at least) to backup contacts, SMS and call logs and (probably unnecessary but you might need it) APN backup & restore to backup your APN settings.

[Q] What can i wipe without losing my nandroid backups?

I have searched online, and there is no definative reliable content on what portions of memory I can delete safely without loosing the nandroid backup. What I mean is, I have TWRP on my handset. Aside from the factory reset option, what else can I wipe? I am asking because I built a Cyanogenmod unofficial image, and flashed my handset with it. The phone booted ok; I got an error about NFC service stopping. So I restored the phone back to a previous nandroid image. I then, tried to install my image again. This time the phone goes into download mode. I think I saw something online about how doing advanced clean would fix this. So when I log into TWRP I have the following options:
Davlic Cache, System, Data, Internal Storage, Cache, and Micro SDcard. How can I know where my nandroid backups reside so I can avoid clearing that portion?

By default nandroid backup is on internal storage but you can choose to save it on sd card as well. Tap on the top box/menu after you enter restore menu. If you choose sd card and twrp shows no backup then the backup is on internal storage. Explore a bit mate.
Or use file explorer check twrp folder in both storage. There should be subfolder of 'backup' in it.
You don't need factory reset. And just choose wipe cache/dalvik/system/data to install new rom/restore nandroid backup
