I have searched online, and there is no definative reliable content on what portions of memory I can delete safely without loosing the nandroid backup. What I mean is, I have TWRP on my handset. Aside from the factory reset option, what else can I wipe? I am asking because I built a Cyanogenmod unofficial image, and flashed my handset with it. The phone booted ok; I got an error about NFC service stopping. So I restored the phone back to a previous nandroid image. I then, tried to install my image again. This time the phone goes into download mode. I think I saw something online about how doing advanced clean would fix this. So when I log into TWRP I have the following options:
Davlic Cache, System, Data, Internal Storage, Cache, and Micro SDcard. How can I know where my nandroid backups reside so I can avoid clearing that portion?

By default nandroid backup is on internal storage but you can choose to save it on sd card as well. Tap on the top box/menu after you enter restore menu. If you choose sd card and twrp shows no backup then the backup is on internal storage. Explore a bit mate.
Or use file explorer check twrp folder in both storage. There should be subfolder of 'backup' in it.
You don't need factory reset. And just choose wipe cache/dalvik/system/data to install new rom/restore nandroid backup

This has been bugging me and I can't seem to find anything on here to explain it.
I have installed custom ROMs on my N7. Problem is most ROM instructions say to do a full wipe/factory reset. When I do that, the downloaded ROM that was sitting on the SDCard gets wiped out as well.
I then have to go back and search for info on how to reset/restore the N7 and start all over, because the recovery (both CWM and TeamWin) don't let me mount the SD card to copy the needed zip over.
How can I do the recommended data wipe without losing the sd card contents?
Failing that, what's easiest way to get the ROM zip back on the N7 when the recovery won't allow it?

dont wipe data...
just do a 'factory reset' in custom recovery...then flash a rom
I use TWRP & don't wipe everything, just System & Factory (to delete installed apps).
This is after wiping Cache & Dalvik Cache.
Unless I'm missing something a data wipe will wipe everything except recovery.
I don't think we have the option to exempt the media folder like on other devices.

I appreciate the suggestions, and I've done the factory wipe. It wiped out the /SDcard folder contents where the zips were.
How do I get zips back on the N7? tried ADB, tried sideload from TWRP, nothing works.
Having many more problems than the last time I did this.

factory reset in TWRP doesnt touch /data/media
are you sure you are on the most recent version of recovery?
updated to latest recovery version, that seemed to be my issue. sd card now untouched.

Pirateghost speaks the truth.
The stock recovery however, wipes everything with it's "factory reset".
It's a little bit unfortunate that the identical terminology is used. No doubt new folks will occasionally get bit by assuming they are the same.
I haven't used cwm yet; not sure what it means by "factory reset" - or even if it uses that terminology.
Hi, I've got a Nexus 10 and I already have rooted and installed TWRP recovery. I'm used to get devices with microsd slot. As this is not the case, I have a noob question.
I'm having problems installing certain apps and I want to try wiping the device and see if after wiping, the installation suceeds. Just in case, I have already taken a nandroid backup, but, as the backup is located in the internal SD, I'm afraid that if I wipe the device, it will also wipe the backup. Will wiping the device erase the TWRP backup too?. The backup is located at /sdcard/TWRP/BACKUPS/...... and so on. I think that wiping the device shouldn't wipe the /sdcard partition, but I'm not sure about this.
Can you please confirm that wiping the device will erase only /data and not /sdcard?

I can't confirm anything; but I'd highly suggest just backing up the nandroid to a computer just in-case. I'm pretty sure though that the nandroid would remain as long as you didn't actually format data.

That's what I've done so far. I have copied the nandroid backup to my PC. I suppose that it's possible, in case the backup is deleted, that I can mount the partition from recovery and then using adb, push the backup in order to restore it. Is this the way to go?.
By the way, what you mean is that the backup will remain as long as I don't format /sdcard, right? Because /data will get formated if I wipe the device, I think.

Not entirely sure; I know in TWRP there's some advanced wipe thing with selections (cache, dalvik, system, something else, usb) and then there's a "Format Data" button.
wiping cache, dalvik, system, and factory reset it will not wipe your "media" partition, also known as your sdcard or internal storage. Doing the "format data" will wipe the whole device including your sdcard.

I finally wiped the device, tested the application I wanted to install and recovered without problems from the TWRP backup that hadn't been deleted. Now that I know that wiping the device solves the problem, I have to backup apps and data for every user, wipe again and recover only apps and data.

I have never had a device without a removable SD and am used to having the contents of my SD protected when I wipe and then flush, i mean flash (hah). When I wipe with TWRP, will I lose my pix, audio, etc as they are not on a separate partition?

If you lost your pix, audio, etc that would really really suck. I don't think I would flash new ROMs daily. So of course the contents of internal SD are protected. UNLESS you choose to wipe internal storage in TWRP so don't mess with those advced options. They call it a factory reset in TWRP but its not like the phone option to factory reset which does wipe internal storage.
Your app data is lost. Just back up with titanium backup. After flashing new ROM install only TB, then restore apps and data (no system apps!) and you're done!
And make sure you have a backup! If anything does go wrong just restore it.

ok I need some serious help my battery is about to die! I rooted my phone last night and this morning I installed twrp 2632 and then rebooted and the phone now will not boot past the twrp screen then I got a call to go to a hospice home and that took several hours in the meantime my phone will not do anything just drain battery! any help would be greatly appreciated! thanks

Hi, this is my problem:
I want to change the rom of my zenfone from stock to a custm one. The issue i have is that every time i factory reset i have to spend 2 hours downloafing everything and changing the settings of my phone. How can i avoid that when switching rom? If i do a nandroid backup with twrp, can i restore only the data on the other rom? Or this is a problem? Should i use titanium backup? Id like to save photos and every setting too

You can't restore just the TWRP's /data backup from Stock to, let's say CM or from CM to Stock, the system's phone won't boot.
TWRP's Data Factory Reset or flahsing a custom Rom using TWRP won't erase the internal memory, so the files you have in the internal memory will be there.
Yes, you should use Titanium Backup when possible to restore your apps or some setting/data.
TWRP's nandroid backup is usually used to restore the "hole" Rom (data, system and boot, at least).

TWRP makes the backup in the /TWRP folder placed on the internal memory, external memory/SD and maybe (I have not tried on this device and his TWRP version), OTG USB storage, at your choice.
As I told you before TWRP´s Data Factory Reset won't erase the internal memory, so TWRP folder won't be erased neither, but maybe have a copy of the /TWRP folder from your internal memory in your PC is a good option too.
But keep in mind that the stock recovery's Data Factory Reset will erase all the internal memory (not only /data).

My international Glalaxy Note 3 just started boot looping. When I turned it on first thing today. Yesterday it was functioning fine.
I removed the battery for 30 seconds still nothing. I booted into recovery, (TWRP) and wiped cache still nothing. So I backed up my phone to an External SDCard, and wiped data still nothing.
So I erased the whole device except recovery, and restored from the backup to try, and retrieve some essential files. Before reinstalling a fresh. The issue is when I go to the internal sdcard on storage it shows as empty with only a TWRP visible. I did get a notification that supersu was not installed. When rebooting the phone after wiping it. But I selected for twrp to install it so it should be there.
I have also tried to recover the data via looking at the backup on my computer but the backup is in a non human readable format.
Any idea how to get the data I need out of the phone or from the backup before I reinstall the OS?
What twrp you are using? Try reflash the twrp recovery to see if the twrp backup still there? Before you wipe did u wipe internal storage too?

You said you wiped evrything.. So it includes Internal storage too right! And TWRP automatically creates the folder evrytime you boot into it.. If want the data from your External storage, try taking the card out and copy it or use MTP with TWRP. Then flash your fresh Rom.
