CMod 4.1.999 has slowed my phone to a halt

I was running a G1 with Cyanogen Mod 4.04, Cyanogen Recovery 1.2. I updated to Recovery 1.4, installed the 1.6 .img, installed Cyanogen Mod 4.1.999, ran the fix permissions command in console, and rebooted. It is SOOO slow. Takes between 15 seconds and 1 minute for any button press or screen touch to be recognized. It is completely unusable. I have found a few posts about this, but nothing offered a concrete solution.
I have since done a wipe in console, and reflashed Cyan 4.1.999. It didn't fix anything.
My SD card is properly formatted for apps2sd, as it worked fine in Cyan 4.04.
Any ideas?

try a task manager and see what is running in the background
try ending programs that may be chewing up memory
set up a swap

What do you mean by set up a swap? My SD card already has a main partition, an ext3 partition and a linux swap partition.

you made no mention of your sd partitions
something is most likely hanging up your memory which is why i said check with a task manager
you can always try flashing the adp again and then cyan
when i first went to cy's i had to do that

I'll try the task manager. Based on how slow it is, it may take me a few hours to get it installed.

i got a quick idea, try shutting off your phone, pull out your sd and try rebooting without it and see what happens without apps2sd going

update to ext3 if you are not already
delete your dalvik-cache if you are upgrading from a previous rom and didn't wipe

huh, did you not read his posts, he has ext3 and he has wiped

Don't know if it would make any difference, but maybe try to install HTC and 4.1.99 and then just flash .999 over the top of that.

Not personally but I have talked to him in PMs. He lives not too far away from me.

sweet, you might see me driving through your day in about 2, 3 weeks after preme gets me drunker than all hell

The fact of the matter is that it simply is DEAD SLOW.
His development process is taken from the MS-developers-handbook.... just keep on shovelling on the bloat, and every once in a while release a new version and CLAIM that it is faster than the last, even when it is slower.
Then you get all the little kiddies, who update with every new version, each of which makes no appreciable difference, BUT because the release notes SAY it is faster, and the fact that they can't really tell, the placebo effect tells them that it IS faster. They keep doing this... several times, so the cumulative placebo effect tells them that it *must be WAY faster*, except that with every new version it actually becomes slightly SLOWER, so after MANY MANY "upgrades", what you turn out to have is something FAR FAR slower than the original.
Just to get a feeling for the differences, try out a stock cupcake build, then try FOUR CM cupcake builds that are evenly spaced out (in order), then again try the stock cupcake build. Then try the stock donut build.

This ROM is a simple rooted ADP1 donut base, with an "expansion pack" -- from which you can pick and choose the extra features you need/want so as to end up with a system that is optimized to YOUR needs, rather than just packing in everything including the kitchen sink and claiming it is the best thing ever.

I had the same horrible lag when I went from 10.1 to .999, so I repartitioned my sd and tried again fresh and it worked perfectly...purrs like a kitten now...

Fixed it.
I wiped, deleted dalvik cache in console (I can't find the command I used though), reinstalled, fixed permissions in console.

I took the time to write this up because i know how frustrating it can be to brick your phone it has happened to me before trying to update it but I've learned how to flash my phone & done it successfully more then 5 times so far so read this careful before trying it out.
you can install this update with Rom Manager worked perfect for me I've installed 3 of Eugene's Froyo updates with this method just make sure you are rooted first & running kernel 2.6.32.9

here's a step by step on how i did it
1. make sure to back up all your applications first! I used App Saver FREE application from the market. Open App Saver run it & save your applications this app will save them to the internal SD card so look for the folder called app saver copy & paste it to your External SD card using Astro File Manager FREE application on the market.
2. download macnutR5 update to your phone
3. remove external sd card once you back up your applications
4. install paid version of rom manager
5. open rom manager click on the first option flash clockworkMod Recovery choose Galaxy S Vibrant hit allow on super permissions then click ok.
6. click on install ROM from SD card
7. go to your download folder & point it to the MacnutR4 zip folder hit install
8. optional choose back up current Rom & clear date & cache but no necessary
then let it do its thing it might take 3-5 minutes to finish the update i noticed the update went faster when i plugged the phone to a power outlet.
note 1: this update will delete your apps and you will have to start from scratch but if you back up your apps with App Saver you will be fine read step 1.
note 2: once your done make sure to go into settings mobile networks then network mode and choose WCDMA ONLY! if not you will have 3G problems.

~ Working jit ( 14 MFLOPS is about all we get.. 16 ish if overclocked to 1.2Ghz)

I've NEVER removed a memory card to flash, any real reason for adding that step in your guide?

You should remove your SD card because some ROMs have bugs and have the tendency of wiping it clean.

So what's the purpose of the Kernal? You didn't mention what to do with it.

In near 3 years I have never heard a developer say to take out your sd card, and I've never heard anyone lose the data on their sd card....

I've had my SD card wiped before. But it wipes the internal card, not the external so removing that wouldn't do much good.

I'm more intrigued at how you are watching NFL games on your phone!? Link?

^ froyo = flash - sites like atdhe.net work... the nfl app is pretty sweet too.
^^ right, that was my whole point... removing the external sd card seems pointless, hence why I spoke up.

Help me clean my phone

I am super anal about not having crap I dont need so I want to go in and all I want to save is my pics and my apps, I want to get rid of anything I dont need without deleting pertinent files. Can anyone help? If this has been posted please direct me to that post i cant seem to find anything. Thanks alot!!!

I know there is an option for formatting the SD card in settings. But I wonder if there are additional steps to complete this without harm. It would be nice if anyone can provide step-by-step instruction of how to do this.

So, you want to delete useless folders on your SD card? Most of them are used by Android, if you delete them, they'll come right back.

i noticed that a lot of the folders are for apps I no longer have so I went ahead and deleted those. I also had 6 backups for ROMS so i deleted 4 of them. After that I moved pics to my laptop and now I am only using 2 GB, removed tons of space!!

I covered this in one of my guides....
what I would do:
backup ANY/ALL things to my PC.
go to settings and unmount/format both internal and external sd cards
ODIN to JFD
move my update b and rom of choice to root, flash....
then move any important files back afterwards.
Phone always felt a lot smoother getting rid of the gunk from day to day stuff.

Yes, but you are still relying on the user KNOWING what is important and what isn't.. If all they have that matters to them is videos, pictures, and music, they can just copy those, follow your instructions, and copy back anything that they deleted they may have needed..
In my opinion, if SPACE is what you want, this app is by far the best. DiskUsage shows you a visual representation of how your space is taken up. This pic may show it better:

From there, you either just click or long press on a folder or file you don't want, delete it, and move on. I love it so much because it is like a program I use on my mac called disk inventory X, which is what I used to scan my phones SD until I found that app. I wish there was a windows equivalent.
If you are anal and just sick of having a ton of folders you don't need that aren't really taking up space, I haven't found a better solution than figuring out what the files in that folder are for, or doing what s15274n recommended and starting fresh..
Then again, when a rom TRULY gets stable for me, wiping and reflashing will usually get me different results(suddenly worse battery life, or something doesn't work, etc), and I'll have to restore a nandroid. I typically only wipe and reflash if I have a problem with the way it runs.

This is the way I do it:
1. copy all personal files (music, pictures, etc.) to computer.
2. Flash JFD.
3. Format SD card.
4. return all personal files.
5. redownload apps.
You can also backup all your apps and copy the titanium backup folder to computer. That way you don't have to redownload your apps.

I'm too lazy to do this too. But there's really an improvement in speed when I do this.

[Q] Nexus System Partition Size

Hi, I'm not sure if this is specifically a Nexus question or a general Android question but I have both a Nexus 4 and Nexus 7 and have observed the same behaviour on both
I have posted in the General section with nor response so now I'm posting on specific forums
Basically what's happening is when I delete stuff from the SDcard the free space seems to be allocated to the system partition WTF?!
Take a look at the screenshots I'm going to try a couple of things - one of the suggested things was clearing the data in the Google Services Framework data >> Settings - Apps - All - Google Services Framework - Clear Data - which freed up some of it but not all, the next thing from here for me would be to flash the factory images again and see what I start out with
Both devices are on CM10.1 if that helps, is anyone else is having the same issue??

Ok so this is my partition sizes now after flashing the factory images back onto my nexus 7. No where near 5GB anyone have any idea what's causing this?

I am guessing you have a couple of CWM back up? Maybe 3-4 of them? Maybe you tried to delete some of them?
Buggy CWM Recovery. Especially if you still hang on to the older versions. Mostly because the way CWM save the backup files.

It's not "system data" for sure. It's some apps with root permission saving its file to locations it shouldn't be doing.
Some how l still think it is CWM, even as you stopped using it in a distance past (which is like 1-2 months ago). I recommend flashing newest CWM and see if there're still old back up files.

isnt this what they were saying was the reason for no SD card and use of MTP ?; basically if i recall correctly the nexus devices do not truly assign partitions instead there is a storage 'pool' that anything can use dynamically.
We got tired of seeing OEMs include many GB of internal storage for music, while users were still running out of space for apps and data. This approach lets us merge everything on one volume, which is way better.

I wish that was the case but it not, the space goes to the system partition and I cant access it on the sdcard

[Q] SafeStrap uses up internal memory

When i create slot and load rom reboot my internal shows full is there a fix for this or what am i doing wrong

From what I have read, once SS is installed internal sd gets improperly reported. Looking in a file manager will give you an accurate idea of how much space you have left.

Yep, only way around I've seen is to flash on the stock slot. That's what I did and haven't had any issues.

With Safestrap, when you create a slot it artificially creates a large "file" like a partition for use on the internal drive. With that it segments into the three parts. Data, system, cache. When you install a rom on that slot it is placed in this designated space. The size of the selection you make at the creation of the slot will determine how much apps you can install. So when you activate a slot, Safestraps runs everything from that "partition." In regard to our situation, we are stuck with stock rom deviations so it is like duplicating the same large system over again for each slot. That's why it eats up large chunks.
***WARNING***: Never touch or alter the stock rom slot. This is fail safe fall back in case something messes up on your custom rom slot. Sometimes you have to switch to it to get the kernel to activate something like gps, wifi, radio drivers. Plus I have had a few instances where I install a rom and it doesn't work properly. With my back against the wall because I have to go to work, I just switch to the safe slot and use it for work. I only put the "must have" apps on so it is minimally altered.

correction to above (just for this one word... the rest of the concept is correct)... you switch to the "unsafe" slot and use it for work... stock slot is the unsafe place to flash... you want to keep that untouched... slot 1/slot 2/etc, are the safe slots to go nuts and brick your slot.
look at the color of the text when you select your slot
stock slot ... red means stop ... you are on the unsafe side of safestrap... don't make changes here unless you are experienced and ready to take some time to odin your way out of trouble
slot 1/slot 2 etc... green means go ... you are on the safe side of safestrap... go nuts... you always have a quick and easy way out with recovery and reboot to stock slot
And yeah... about the memory thing... when you flash a rom in a slot... and then check your storage in settings ... it looks full only because the slot is small and you are only looking at that partition ... use root browser or something similar to check your actual free memory from any slot... it's not a glitch or a problem or a situation where all your memory is used up... it's supposed to be that way so you know when your rom slot (slot 1/slot 2 etc...)is getting full... and you're rooted so you have access to whatever you need to look at whenever you want.

You can see in the above pics taken a few minutes apart... the top pic shows a huge purple bar having 33Gb as misc. ... that's the part of your system that the rom can't see because you are in the slot 1 partition... then if you check it in root browser you will see it's actually 12Gb free memory... (keep in mind I have some huge HD movies and a few roms in my phone , that's why I only have 12Gb free)

i understand that the system doesn't see the space because of safestrap. but how do i override this so that i can continue to install the apps i want?

No way to override... When you create the ROM slot... choose the largest data partition at 4GB... move apps you don't use often to sdcard...
Don't understand how anybody can be using over 4GB for apps but to each their own... maybe contact hashcode about upping the limit on ROM slots to be more customizable for those only using one or two slots?
