I am looking to ditch Symbian and have decided that Android is the way to go (despite the downfalls along the lines of camera and sound quality).
It might seem a no brainer but I am not sure I have use for the qwerty offered by the Desire. That said, I like the latest and greatest but I am trying to convince myself that the Desire Z with its extra bulk is worth the extra if I am not going to use the qwerty much.
I might find that I grow to like the keyboard on the other hand (which is what I am hoping as I have almost convinced myself to go with the Z).
Any arguments for forgetting the Desire entirely?
If you hold back i will have both devices here once my Z arrives.....my gf has just got a desire and i wasnt sure if she would be ok with the s/w keyboard....its not too bad actully but i still prefer hardware qwerty keyboards.
Watch this space.
before owning the a desire i had a nokia e71 and i gotta say the keyboard on it was amazing. After realizing the desire z is getting released soon I decided to sell my desire. I just never got used to using a touch keyboard after using one with real hardware keys. I'd say go for the desire z if having a hardware keyboard is your thing. But otherwise the desire is pretty decent and I was extremely satisfied with it except for the fact it didn't have a keyboard.
IMO the display should not be obtruded by the input (even not my own fingers)
I use the web intensively from my phone (news, blogs, mil, etc)
so I can't imagine using internet without a keyboard
I'm using the X10 now and I've made my best to adapt, but I really miss the keyboard
Again, just IMO, but a physical keyboard makes me more productive
Well, I was holding out for the Desire Z, but needed to get a new phone, as I couldn't live with my old phone anymore. So, I got a San Francisco (SF) on Orange PAYG (it's a rebranded zte blade). Anyway, I didn't think that I would get on without a hardware keyboard, as I moved away from a touch pro 2...
Anyway, installed swype on the SF, and really getting on quite well with it. It's not as bad as I thought it would be to live without a physical keyboard.
Obviously a physical keyboard is much better to use, but for the time being, I cancelled my pre-order (did so a while back), and am just using the SF for a bit. Will give me time to see how well the Desire Z does, and whether I wanna buy one in the future, or just stick with the SF for a bit longer...
But, I would say that if you are not desperate for a hardware keyboard, and have used touch screen keyboards before and got on ok with them, then it's your choice as to whether the extra money is worth it?! I think most of the differences between the two is the physical keyboard, the internal available rom (1.5gb vs 0.5gb I think), a few differences in the network capabilities and the new sense ui and htcsense.com. So, if you put a custom rom on the phone, then you will have basically the same phone, but without the keyboard and the extra rom...
@lovelldr: are you serious ? Android 2.1, only 600MHz CPU and missing QWERTY keyboard is more than small difference. You are comparing one of the lowend models to the highend.
If we go with your analogy, HTC Dream is pretty much same phone as HTC Desire HD. Except the display size, display resolution, CPU speed, RAM, ROM, other features...

WTF, I'm saying I'm staying with that phone until I've seen whether the Desire Z is as good as stated...
I'm stating to the OP the differences between the Desire Z and original Desire... It's then his decision whether he chooses. I was merely stating a software issue (so it doesn't matter which version of android or the hardware differences). I found that swype (again, can be used on any phone, so it doesn't matter) is a good means of input, and that the hardware keyboard isn't so much of a big deal breaker to me any more (after trying it out on the SF).
Where did I say to him to forget either of those phones, and go with an SF?! I didn't...
Then i misunderstood your post, it sounded like you are comparing Desire Z and the Orange SF.
In my experience, physical keyboard is impossible to replace. I had HTC Touch HD, it was a nightmare to type on it (and i had it for a year, so don't try to argue that i didn't tried). Even a bad physical keyboard (like the one on my Milestone) is miles ahead of any virtual keyboard.
yes, physical keyboard is better than a virtual keyboard, hands down...
But, I'm saying that if the user is thinking they can get on with a virtual keyboard (I think that swype is the best virtual keyboard I've tried, works much better than any of the other virtual keyboards, and without swype I probably wouldn't be recommending this), wants to save some money, and isn't too bothered with the small differences between the two (i.e. the internal ram, network offerings etc), then the desire z will be good to go.
If you have someone you know who has an android device, and are able to get swype for that device, then give it a go, and see how you get on... If all works well, and you're happy to save some cash, then go for the original desire I would say... But, at the end, it's your choice, and you might be unable to get on with virtual keyboard, or be a user that must have the latest and greatest...
Problem with Swype is that beta is closed, and i'm not in a mood to explore grey areas of internet . On other side, Swype still doesn't solve the biggest problem of all virtual keyboards - they take up big part of screen, so you have a keyboard instead of content.

But it's all swings and roundabouts... When using the physical keyboard on a device, it means that the size of the device is almost twice as big... hehe. OK, enough of my argumenting
Thanks for your comments folks... a couple of things to consider but I think I am leaning more towards the Desire Z.
As I understand it, as well as the other points mentioned, the cpu in the Desire Z is a later generation than the Desire so the device runs a lot faser and smoother. I am not too bothered about the qwerty as originally stated but If the qwerty doesn't make the handset all that much bigger than the Desire then I may just take a punt - I may even grow to like the qwerty and I am sure it will be far in advance of the others I have used in the past - namely the Qtek 9100 and the Vario 3.
Price wise I don't think there is a huge difference with current UK prices for sim free handsets so I may be better just shelling out the extra £60-70 for a cutting edge device (Desire Z)?
What I am anxious to avoid is ending up with a new handset that has a qwerty that is never used. That said, apart from the HD which is too big for me I don't see that I have much alternative.
Thanks again for your thoughts ...
Desire Z, for the simple reason that it uses a next generation processor compared to the Desire. The clock speed is a bit lower, but the much faster graphics make up for it. I'm sure there will be overclocking available once the phone is rooted too.
One of the main shortcomings of the Desire's Snapdragon is its graphics capabilities. It's just not up to par with other top players like the Milestone and the Galaxy S series. The Z addresses that.

Another plus point of the Z over the desire is that the multitouch screen actually works perfectly, I will dig up the video which demonstrates both the desire and Z screens showing off the multitouch hardware........
The thread HERE highlights this topic.
You're doing a good job of convincing me guys, thanks
I looked at some HD videos last night and it seems that thing is even bugger (marginally) than the HD2! Too big for me for sure so back to the Z I think.
mrvanx - I assum this is the video you were referring to?
http://pocketnow.com/android/does-the-g2-suffer-the-same-multi-touch-problems-as-the-nexus-one-video
Demo's the multi-touch differences of the DZ and the N1 very well. I assume the Desire uses the same panel as the N1.
Gone for the Desire Z and ordered from Amazon.co.uk
Delivery stated as between 3rd and 5th Nov (I ordered using Free Super Saver Delivery) but I am sure this will be delayed.
At least they don't take payment prior to dispatch so nothing to lose really.

Yeah but he was answering the guy that was saying once the phone is rooted, then it will be able to be overlocked. And he's correct in saying that it has been rooted now, and it is able to be overclocked. It's just semantics, it's not a permanent root, but it's still been rooted.
It's not semantics. I believe we can't flash custom ROMs, which to many people is the best thing about rooting.
I'd been using the MS 1 until the MS 2 appeared and I thought it was time to upgrade. The reasons I chose MS 2 to be my next phone were:
- The screen : MS 1 has a really good screen even it's not the Amoled or something so I thought MS 2 would have the good screen too.
- Qwerty keyboard : I love Qwerty Keyboard and I know that MS2's Keys is better than MS1's.
- Games : MS 1 plays almost games perfectly and when MS2 has double of CPU and RAM it would play games double as well as MS1.
- Custom Rom : MS1 has tons of custom ROM and one again I thought MS2 will have may custom ROM either.
However all those things have changed after I bought the MS2. It's not even close to compare to MS1, It's worse. MS1 was a good phone and it did a very good job supporting me in work, study, entertain when the MS2 only make me mad.
- The screen is not good as MS1. Sadly but it's true when I compare it side to side with the MS1.
- Games : I can't play my favorite games because of the Multi-touch problem so the extra CPU and RAM is... useless => Funny.
- Custom Rom : no custom Rom with the locked bootloader, and I have to use the phone with the laggy Motor Blur and tons of junk apps.
After 2 months using it and seeing no hope from the Fission Rom, I had to replace it with the Captivate. I didn't sell the MS2, I don't hate it instead I love it. I hate Motor and feel sorry for the MS2, it could be a good phone but Motor didn't do it. I totally lost my trust on Motor just like with Sony when I upgraded from the Xperia X1 to Xperia X2. I couldn't believe that I make a mistake twice.
/pat
My experience is similar, from MS1 to MS2, but I was fool to ingnore CM ROMs for MS1 until I bought MS2, otherwise, I would not have
on the other hand, MS2 is much better at least on Multi-task, using MS1 with CM7, I need to count how many apps I have launched or it might suspended for more than 30 seconds, on MS2, it's better
So, I am looking forward to Unlocking that MOTO promised(but with no due date), and selling the two phones at the same time, when one is sold, I will keep the other, for they give me about the same (overall) experience
At least you can use CDMA phones such as HTC ones. In my country the only radio available is GSM, so I'm stuck with MS2, Galaxy S and Xperia x10 ( and now atrix ).
Thank you both. I almost bought that phone. It`s look real great, it has GPU processor, and all I wont, but now again I don`t know what to do. I hope that there is perfect phone for me like TYNT2 flew years ago
Actually, there is no custom ROM such as CM7 or MIUI
You can try the UK SBF to get a better performance
And try to use Titanium backup to freeze the blur service
It may help you to get a better MS2
I think the multi-touch problem is caused by MOTO
Other product like Atrix also has this problem
Thank you for this post, it helped me decide not to upgrade from milestone 1 Maybe if the bootloader become free, if not the nextone I probably get is the milestone 3. Unfortunately there is no (real) other QWERTY option in android other then milestone, all the other are thicker
its better to decide for yourselves Eami and kkocyk, try and get a demo in a shop if possible and have a play with it. i almost completely disagree with everything in the first post. i found the screen to be vibrant, clear and one of the best ive ever seen. even now after 5months im still impressed with the quality of the screen and i prefer it over the milestone 1 screen any day.
ive no idea about a "multitouch problem" but could be down to different firmwares??
remember that twice the cpu speed doesnt necessarily mean twice the performance, anyone whos had a pc and upgraded will know that theres an ever decreasing benefit from faster cpu's.. game performance would be more affected by the gpu anyway. but ive yet to find a game that it doesnt play fluidly.
Theres an interesting set of benchmarks between the droid 1 and 2 here (theres not much difference between the droids and the milestones, the hardware is near identical so the results should be very similar)
the droid2 is almost double that of the droid 1 in the final test. 24fps vs 39fps.. (if i can find the app ill run a benchmark myself to see how it compares)
http://dailymobile.se/2010/08/14/benchmark-tests-motorola-droid-2-droid-nexus-one-and-evo-4g/
i cant really comment on the custom rom situation as ive no interest in that type of thing, the standard rom does everything i require and i see no reason to muck around with it. but if youre after custom roms then the milestone 2 obviously isnt for you. i have however rooted it and removed the "Junk apps" with no problem. i used titatinum backup to freeze them. this has helped improve battery life and id recommend it.
personally, i absolutely love the phone and would whole heartedly recommend it to everyone who wants an android phone with a hardware qwerty keyboard.
Well, to be honest with you, I'm just tired of waiting for literally ANYTHING custom, with all motorola sh*t stripped out from phone. So I put out my phone on local auction page few days ago, and today, luckily, my Milestone 2 got itself a new owner. Going to switch to Desire HD, phone that has an astonishing support. Goodbye to Motorola, that was my first and the last phone from you guys.
Thank you for this post, it helped me decide not to upgrade from milestone 1

I was thinking about buying MS2 as I'm looking for the full QWERTY keyboard on the Android, been a dedicated user of Nokia Communicators until now...
Seeing the replies and experience with MS2 here, and learning more about that motoblur thing, I'm not so sure that MS2 would be the phone for me. Still, can't pass over the iPhone appearance of HTC Desire and similar phones to actually buy one, and the lack of hardware keyboard is another issue. The search goes on...
1. MS2 is not a bad phone in any way.
2. The fact that it does not fit your needs does not make it bad.
3. The fact that you did not do proper research before buying the phone is the reason why you did not like it.
4. MotoBlur can be taken care of easily and has nothing to do with it. I have not ever used any of its components even though I have had the phone for 6 months now.
5. Looking at the market of QWERTY phones running Android MS2 is actualy the best you can get, and it is a darn good phone.

1. Did I say MS2 is a totally bad phone ? I said "It could be the good phone but Motorola did not do it" so the bad guy here is Motorola.
2. It does not fit my needs that's right and I just say it not and why. If I really want to make it bad, should I keep it or I just sell it right away ?
3. What proper research you talking about ? Did anyone here talk about these problem yet or I'm the first one ? I got mine a week after the release day and at that time there is nothing that I could do a... research. Btw, how the hell I know there would be a multitouch problem ???
4. You are right but would a blurless ROM be better ?
5. Yes, It's the best QWERTY and that's why I bought it just because the QWERTY. Now, I have the QWERTY but also have a lot of problems.
Whoa calm down guys. I am also disappointed by the MS2 and struggling whether selling it or not, provided that the price is way too low.
So much negativity in here...
So yeah, you hate the fact you bought the phone, so yeah other people actually like the phone... Deal with it.
If you really hate the phone, no one's keeping you from buying a new one. And if you'd like your money back, well good luck with that. Either way, it's not like this thread will help anything.
I'm totally satisfied with my Milestone 2. Only thing that bothered me? I had to switch to Zeam Launcher so that my fav game (Dungeon Hunter 2) had a normal frame rate. No biggie for me, since my defaut launcher (GO) is full of widgets and has 11 home screens, my Zeam has 3 (games, social apps, system apps).
And I'm saying that in the past tense because after VM Heap Tool I don't have this problem anymore, even before I froze every Blur thing with Titanium Backup. And it could be just some bad coding from gameloft since more recent games (Sacred Odissey, Eternal Legacy) never stuttered even with a lot of things running in the background.
I also am very satisfied with my Milestone 2. I own a few devices like the phone 3gs and 4 as well as a Desire and Desire HD and the M2 always has me coming screaming back.
The hardware is even more reliable and of superior quality then my trusty n900. The screen looks as new as the day I unveiled it, the keyboard slide mechanism is just as firm as well and I have never had any tactile feedback issues.
It eats my business apps and playing fruit ninja is pretty damn smooth. It flip flops between my known wifi networks and 3G without ever being reminded. The last time I rebooted was because I thought I may have seen something odd happen but not very certain of it and then relise that I only every reboot it because the battery door and battery go holidaying on the ground for no apparent reasons but wait maybe I did drop it.
This thing has been a workhorse for 6 months and hasn't missed a beat. Sure a few os bugs and that blur rubbish but root the device and use TitaniumBackup to hide the annoying stuff and treat yourself to a paid launcher that has their own quality widgets and you are all set.
Milestone 2 Roms? Nope, not really and I do long for a truly AOSP experience but i'll live if one never arrives. It is a phone, a business tool, media device, navigation tool and social network control panel and it will still fulfill those duties just fine in another six months.
I wasn't happy at all with Motorola when I first purchased it and things haven't changed much but this is still a damn good phone (well, for me at least).
I was wondering the screen difference. My milo 1 looks better, but cm7 uses 24bit or 32bit color, so you will get better color reproduction.
I think screens even have the same hardware ID.
All other things, could be solved with custom ROM, but there are no developers atm.
I dont see it as a failure, its juts no so dev friendly. Thats the only thing that dissaponted me, m2 its not so popular, so it doesnt have developers interested in it.
The reasons I bought this phone was: Hardware Keyboard and the camera, and im very satisfied at the moment with it (i dont have any bounce key problem yet XD)
Maybe Milestone2 doesn't fit for your need, and can't be to make general oppinions about the product to the others...

I'm looking to buy a g2.
Firstly, Is there anything that I should look for? Are there specific versions that are easier to root than others/ harder to brick? (I'm coming from a vibrant and they made a bad batch of those that couldn't get into the recovery, so I want to know if there are any similar issues to be wary of)
Second, do you long time owners recommend the G2? Is it a good phone or should I wait for something else/go for a mt4gs?
Thanks in advance.

well if you buy one that is running froyo instead of gingerbread, it will be easier root. i would also say if ur looking for a android qwerty slider, then i recommend the droid 3, but if you can get past the uglyness of the mt4gs then thats not a bad option either. the dz is getting pretty old now

Stuck on t-mobile . Idk if I could live with sense on the mt4gs to be honest, and it seems like CM7 isn't coming to it anytime soon.
I think I might just tough it out with my vibrant.
You're arriving kinda late to the game, aren't you? The G2 has been end-of-life'd if I remember correctly.
But it looks like you're in luck as T-Mo is about to drop the price on the G2.

Its a solid phone. But as others have mentioned, its getting pretty old. Getting close to a year old, which is ancient in smartphone terms. Unless you get a real good deal on one, or a hardware keyboard is an absolute necessity (G2/Desire Z is still probably the best around with a keyboard), I would spend my money on something with more current specs (CPU, memory, etc.).
You might like to know that the HTC Desire Z / T-mobile G2 is very similar to the Desire S.
Difference is that the Z has the qwerty keyboard and the S doesn't.
(Also, the S is stock clocked at 1GHz and Z is only 800MHz, but it is the same chipset so this can be changed with software).
The LCD, touch screen, gadgets and everything is the same.
The S is lighter and slimmer, also looks better.
If you get over the qwerty keyboard you might prefer the S.
The touch screen is very good and I often use it instead of the physical keyboard on my Z.
Also, even though the physical keyboard is good i cant type that fast. Not as fast as on a blackberry (keys are closer together on most blackberrys).
Some people have issues with the hinge and it's hard to replace.
Personally, I would swap my Z for an S right now. But they are both excellent devices and both **** on an iPhone4 for screen quality, call quality and build quality.
Screen is really good for watching videos, colors are so much nicer than on other devices like iPhone4 or Desire HD. It has a noise cancellation mic that makes voice chat sound really good and I have never had a drop out in the 6 months I've had it. It has a metal chassis and is very strong, dropped it plenty of times and it just scratches never breaks. Digitalizer is plastic so won't crack.
2nd hand, you can pick up a Z for about $250 or S for $300 - ish.
OP, really going to have to agree this device is too old at this point. Almost a year old now so I wouldn't buy one unless I got a damn good deal on it used. Plenty of other great phones out there right now.
It is a year old yet still one of the top performing single core phones on the market. If you can get one for $200 or less with no contract bs then I would say go for it. This phone still goes on ebay used for $150+
Know that finding a good case is tough with this style of phone....I recommend the otter box personally. Their warranty is top notch as well.
I also recommend doing the spring replacement to tighten up the hinge. Ever since I did that little mod, I have been more than pleased with my G2. I have had mine for 8 months and I can honestly say I could care less about upgrading my phone anytime soon because this phone does everything I need it to do and it does it quick enough for me.

Desire S and Z are not the same chipset. Z has the Snapdragon MSM7230, and the S has the MSM8255. And there is also a big difference in the MHz rating of a CPU, and simply overclocking it.
Also the S has 768 Mb of memory versus 512 Mb on the Z; the S has a 1450 mAh battery versus 1300 mAh on the Z; the S has no trackpad but it does have a front facing camera. Really, there is not that much the same between the two phones besides the screen size.
IMO, the hinge "issue" is totally overblown. The hinge is designed to be easy to open and close with a light touch. Some people don't like it, and its just a personal preference.
Okay, I posted a very similar thread in the Epic 4G section. I don't often come to this forum.
It seems to me that looking at all of the new releases, with the possible exception of the Motorola Droid series (although it seems the Droid Razr is getting more hype than the Droid 3 did, so it may not even count as a flagship), is the era of flagship physical keyboard phones dead?
Noteworthy to me is the fact that other than the Desire Z (and the Desire HD was arguably the flagship of its time, although IMO the Z was a better phone), there have been no new keyboard flagship phones from HTC or Samsung or most of the smaller makers.
What do you think is the future of keyboard phones?
So far all of them seem to be decidedly mid-range devices, not phones that set the bar, so to speak.

Maybe my next Phone is no more equipped with a hardware keyboard.
first fact for this is the wight and the design.. 180g and 15mm is not so "smart"

I wish it would be more "mainstream", have a 720p screen and LTE support. I'll stick with my Desire Z for now.
i don't get the race to the flattest phone in the world, i would say give some extra fat for all those extremely flatty things and slap bigger battery in them.
Desire Z feels like a phone, i like the way its think, not too thick, and im fine whit the weight, people can't carry 200 grams whit em anymore?
There's Droid 4 coming, 5row qwerty, looks promising, hope they include atleast 1,2Ghz cpu. But at this moment i don't think im going to change to a new phone within a year. Ill hope HTC comes up whit 5 row G3.

So far mostly mid-range phones - Glide is a midrange; the Galaxy Note or HTC Rezound are more like top-end.
I personally prefer something a little thicker and heavier in my hands ;D
Jokes aside, the heaviness of the phone gives me the feel of a better build quality, as opposed to the cheap feel of the S II, which my gf has. So light it weighs next to nothing...
feels like the wind can just blow it away...
Yes i hate thin light phones! I want a brick phone damn it! Give me a big screen a good keyboard (im thinking G1 style but full width) and a nice thick heavy battery that will last all day. Oh and i want one of them fancy induction chargers built into the case. And a nice creditcard chip thingy.

OMG that would rock my socks. I wonder, is there maybe a proper sized BT keyboard and a case?
Check Adapt ADK-100 Micro Keyboard (Amazon ASIN B003ZWGEW8) saying it's exactly the size of an iPhone 4. this is a comparison with the HD2: images.mobilityminded.com/2010/07/IMG_4444.jpg

My opinion is riding a subway, bus etc. Qwerty wins. Physical buttons will always be superior and more versatile/precise.
I do think phones are crafted by trends, had the G2 originally been launched with a tighter spring, this phone would have sold like crazy.
Although I'm happy with my phone as I think its funny when I catch people looking at my phone wondering which one it is or why my screen is green.

I'll stick with the Z for a long time before I move to something without a keyboard!

You seem to have missed the HTC DOUBLESHOT:
http://www.t-mobile.com/shop/Phones...px?cell-phone=T-Mobile-myTouch-4G-Slide-Black
I moved from the Desire to the Desire Z.
To me, a thin keyboard-less phone like the Desire is like an Aston Martin with a 1 litre engine in it. It may look nice but, it's missing the grunt to really get things done (functionality wise rather than cpu!).
With the Desire Z, I can snap open the keyboard and get far more screen real estate without having to have a software keyboard popping up. I can also do common tasks like copying and pasting faster and easily switch apps with shortcuts. I can pretty much touch type on my phone now, while walking for example without looking down.
Of course, we all know this, I just wish the public would realise the advantages of having a keyboard and then manufacturers would make more of an effort. Maybe if we all lectured friends, we can force a tipping point!

Well and at&t at that. Ugh.
The Glide has already been out in Canada for a couple weeks or so. Although Rogers is just as bad as AT&T probably.
Well, you got me there. Me and my brother enjoy the feel of keyboards on our phones. My G2 came across an lcd problem and my sister got me a G2x, good phone but couldn't enjoy the LG,since I'm an htc guy. Sold it,got a sidekick 4G, didn't like the way samsung made it. Sold that, bought a new LCD, fixed my G2. At the end of the day, I'm a Qwerty keyboard HTC guy. As for my bro, a HTC mytouch guy, he loves the Mytouch Slide 4G. We both came from a G1. I'm praying for the G3. *fingers crossed*

What I'm hoping for in the next year:
1.2 ghz dual core minimum
5 inch screen (4.5 inch minimum)
Qwerty 3-4 row I don't care
Hdmi out
Not samsung (wii controller won't work)
Must have decent battery life, most liekly ill be buying another fat mugen lol
preferred htc but its not really a big deal to me
Don't care about thick or thin
Honestly the desire z handles everything but the screen size and hdmi out want my n64 on the big screen! I'm hoping for gamecube/dreamcast emulators in the next years. These overclocked dual cores can easily handle it.

You couldn't PAY me to use a phone with a 5" screen. Screen ***ABSOLUTELY MUST*** be UNDER 4". Any bigger than that and it isn't a phone -- its a tablet, and no, I'm not interested in holding a tablet up to my head to make a phone call.

Cool, wasn't really asking for anyones opinion. Some people just don't like big phones, I love big phones and surf the internet and play games quite often. I don't wear tight jeans too lol, so 5 inch phones would not really be to big.

Hello everyone! I'm just wondering if you guys are still generally happy with the device?
I was thinking about getting this phone because it has a keyboard, and it's relatively cheep from Amazon.co.uk.
I currently have a Samsung Galaxy Note, which I know to be a beast of a device, it has twice the ram, 3x more power, but really, I'm SO tired of typing on touch screens! it often makes me slower and I can't walk and type at the same time like how I used to when I was a blackberry user.
So my solution was buy a tablet, and then get a keyboarded phone.
Does this phone still work decently well in todays world? I don't do much except text, read forums and maybe browse the web a little (not too frequently). I often listen to music, but even those old 300mhz phones can do that!
So my question is: Are you guys still happy with this device?
Thanks
I have Kindle Fire and MS2 and I'm still happy with MS2.
With MS2Ginger rom, some voltage tweaks + overclocking and it run 3+ days on battery used only as communication device, without playing games. And still it's solid build, heavy device without any scratches after year of using.
But with 2.3 android and no activity in ICS development.
I honestly don't know why this device is in legacy because even though it's old, it's not that out of date spec wise. There are a lot of midrange devices that are the same...
Thanks for the advice. Is stock also a good contender?
Sent from my GT-N7000 using Tapatalk 2
Sure I am!
The down side is: Since I don't like stock rom (2.3.6) I have to put up with incompatibility issues using roms, minimal but still lol.
Overall its a flawless cellfone!
using CM9 (20120602)
*Now using CM7 from Endless7

i just get mine off amazon this week and i have to say that i'm not impressed at all
it have nice keyboard, it is very well build - overall i think that hardware is very good
but i have to say that software is its downside, there is only handful of devs that still working on it, userbase is way to small for proper debugging and locked bootloader makes you think twice before any flash...
it could be great phone but i'm actually disappointed as it is exactly like my recently sold nokia n900 (well, a bit thinner ) nice hardware & not too bad soft but it lack hardware acceleration both flash and video, camera is ok but needs plenty of light, and my problems with gsm/3g/wifi make it highly unreliable as communication device - unfortunately i have to say that my 5+ years old symbian E71 is almost just as good in everyday use...
It's a dud, I'm experiencing keyboard failure after having it repaired under warranty for the same issue 6 months ago. The stock software is slow, the locked bootloader frustrated efforts to develop custom ROMs and the screen is too small.
And it was still the only decent keyboard phone I could get in Australia.
Hi
Just got mine recently from Amazon and even though it is pretty old already
I still prefer it over newer devices. I did have some pure touch screen devices
before and as well got just so annoyed not having a physical keyboard anymore.
Battery - is in my hands not great (2days max with average use) but then,
show me other smartphones which can do much longer - general trend I guess
Software - found the motorola blur pretty and sometimes very useful
(for example one message app fusing email, sms, twitter messages) but very slow as well
--> so I rooted + flashed with ms2ginger and used the deblur script from this forum, now everything is much smoother.
Being stuck with an older android version is not bothering me that much, I actually do have ICS on my transformer but dont experience so many advantages over the old version on the phone.
To sum up, good device especially for that price!
Yeah I gave it a try. I ordered it off of Amazon UK and it arrived on Monday. I tried it and sent it back on Tuesday. It was too slow. It lagged a lot on my contact list... to be fair though I do have thousands of contacts and most have pictures. But still...I couldn't get through the list. So I decided to stick with my galaxy note until a more powerful European keyboarded device comes out... it seems that blackberry will be the next one only because every company is going crazy on making devices thinner and thinner. To be honest I don't care if it's thin or not (14mm is a good size), I'd rather have a much larger battery in a modern phone than a slim device that lasts 3 hours screen on time!
Regardless, thanks for your help.
Salutations from Spain.

Ah a pity but I guess I would have done the same if I
experienced problems.
Nevertheless regarding the idea to wait for a new device with proper keyboard
I am a little bit pessimistic. More and more manufactures are stoping to produce them and I think just lately HTC decided as well to not produce them anymore
It seems that most people dont bother unfortunately.
The only major one left is Blackberry which me personally I dislike. Saw yesterday on Engadget a blurry shot of a new Motorola with keyboard though - maybe still some hope around ....
BTW @Bluepix: what clock speed do you use ? I am thrilled by your 4d and still 33% left
Bit of thread necromancy here..
Possible QWERTY replacements for Milestone 2 floating around as rumours. Obviously no idea if they will work outside of the US yet. Not like Motorola is putting out anything there anyway.
Samsung Galaxy S Blaze Q, some sort of SII with a smaller screen and odd looking QWERTY layout.

And whatever the hell this is from Motorola. Someone suggested Photon Q: http://www.androidcentral.com/motorola-working-ics-slider-sprint
Personally hoping for some sort of Sidekick 4G sequel with more grunt and a decently sized screen. That thing looked dreamy in all its pictures <3
I'm happier now with CM 10.1, except for the camera.
The stock versions I used were pretty slower, CM runs much better now.
I like the phone in general as the keyboard etc.
But the sw is rubbish: lags hangs crashes even with the CM10
Sadly all the new phones seem to bee buggy as well so i have no idea how to fix this.
Trying the heavily modded rom if i figure out how to install it.
I am a very happy, but new apps want more and more power and RAM, and sometime it lag.. i try new phones its fast, but its stupidly huge, i hate those stupid huge phones, I want something fast from Motorola, maybe i ll buy it if its been a half good as Milestone 2
Milestone 2 is younger brother of milestone 1 (my old phone) and maybe it is not so prety like 1 but have more ram and no need to oc. But have keyboard and ergonomic and its great peace of solid work. Maybe new samsungs are beter but they also biger And tell me which samsung can survive crash on ground at 120 km/h ? MILESTONE CAN
The phone to me is a big step in the phone I use to have which was the t-mobile comet.. but I'm very happy with the device. When it came into the mail, I was very excited and I love this phone to this day. I just need an extended battery though other than that. I love it.

you have to root your phone, bootstrap it and install bootmenue and recovery. from there you have to restore the nandroid (cause thats the format the rom is made in).
read the threads in the root and dev. section of this forum.... it's not very complicated.

but to answer the topic question:
show me a device with hw keyboard and a better performance than the ms2 and i will buy it. -> there is no alternative this time at market. it's a shame.....
I am very happy too with the Milestone 2. God bless we can only softbrick this device, so some experiments with different roms are not neckbraking. The hardware keyboard is very good, very smooth writing possible. I would buy it again ,for this price you will get a quality phone"micropc".
