I had a Nexus One and just switched to G2:
Here is the breakdown
Pros:
-IMPROVED BATTERY LIFE OVER NEXUS (it's all over the net people look it up if you dont believe me)
-What looks to be a sharper screen
-Way better touch sensitivity (= better screen typing)
-Much snappier and faster than the Nexus
-Boots very fast
-Keyboard is very nice
-Hinge is sturdy and not bad
(dont listen to the haters everyone hates t-mobile)
-Keyboard has 3 dedicated buttons u can customize
-Dedicated Camera button (really a nice touch)
-Back is chromed out and still has LED flash
Cons
-WEIGHT (Nexus = 4.6 oz vs G2 = 6.5 oz)
-WEIGHT (heaviest phone, 0.5 oz heavier than Evo)
Thats the thing. Besides the weight, there is nothing else that makes this phone WORSE than the Nexus.
I say this based on the fact that in a few days-week the G2 will have tethering and mobile hotspot support.
I traded my Nexus + 50 dollars for the G2 and I was originally gonna sell the G2 but now i am keeping it.
The G2 is a well designed, well made phone that has a great screen, keyboard, and battery life.
You cant go wrong getting a G2, in fact, all you Nexus One owners should try and get a new phone soon bc the Nexus One's resale is dropping fast.
A month ago the phone was worth 500 easily now its pushing 300-400 if you do it through craigslist. Ebay still holds steady at 500 same with Amazon.
Bottom line: Nexus One owners have a hot phone they can easily parlay into a trade on craigslist like i did.
There is no need to wait for the next gen of phone, take your nexus one, get a g2, its faster, better battery life than nexus, and has a keyboard.
I love it!
I'm sorry to see you go stfwayne :-(
But I'm happy your still an Android brother of mine!
Only things that I think the people here on Xda would disagree with you on the G2 being better than a Nexus One are:
1) Hard to root since it resets the phone every reboot
2) Physical keyboard might not be for everyone... as I've said before I like a phone that can slide into my front pocket without the added bulk of a keyboard making people think I have an erection =/
3) At the mercy of T-mobile to get updates and features. Gonna get gingerbread but who knows if you will get anything after that?
The G2 is a wonderful phone though I agree and pretty much think of it as a Nexus One that has traded:
A) freedom from carriers holding back OS updates and features
B) freedom to root
For:
A) physical keyboard
Thanks for taking the time to let the N1 owners know your thoughts though
Edit: Two things I caught reading your email are you don't like the battery life + touch sensor. For me these things are not even a consideration since:
1) I carry a tiny spare battery in wallet to last an entire day of heavy, heavy use.
2) The only games i play are emulators using a bluetooth wiimote so I don't even use the multitouch for games so the clearpad issue is overblown.
Hey, since you've got a G2 handy, maybe you can help out the folks here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=807116
Until it can be properly rooted and made to be my ***** its of no interest. After that it would be of interest but just isnt quite enough to get me to buy in. I'm thinking the N1 will hold me till the dual cores come along which I figure will also coincide with a new developer phone.
You can pry my nexus from my cold dead fingers next phone I get will be : unbranded, 4 inch screen, keyboard (normal hinge), dual core, two cameras. But congrats on your g2, when they root that thing japanese people will point and run and scream in terror! Oc'd g2 > godzilla

CONS
No root
No custom roms
Many forced and noisy apps
MMS slideshow crap
Storage capacity LIES
I could go on, but that is enough for now... I dropped the G2 back in the mail to T-Mo, and resumed use of my N1 within a week. The G2 has potential, but massively sucks.
I think the next phone I will consider is the Droid Terminator in 2011Q1...
I don't want a device with a keyboard...I find the Nexus One to be the perfect form factor. G2 can never be, for me. I'm keeping and using my two Nexus Ones until they die.

I've noticed it does effect zooming sometimes, typing on the touch keyboard, and sometimes is just completely off and you have to put into standby and come back to fix it.
For me the major problems in the n1 is the touch screen issue, battery life is short, the gpu is weak, and call quality is not what i'm used to.
Made the switch too and loving it. Screen does seem nicer and keyboard is great especially for my emulators. The extra weight also feels good in my hand so I see that as a pro. Still got my Nexus for gingerbread purposes and as a backup. No root is not a con and notice you said no root YET we have cyanogen, enomther, and other devs working on the G2 and we do have a rom sure its only on temp root and you gotta run terminal commands and ext partition to use it its still a rom. As far as memory goes there is 4gb just not all available to user, 1.5gb is more then enough for app storage more would be nice but not necessary and plus some ppl are saying its a kernel issue and can be fixed in OTA. In the end though I love this phone, I still lurk around the Nexus forums and right now have my nexus put away in my otterbox just incase something happens to my G2

You forgot the biggest Conn of all; the hinge issue that will ultimately plague ALL G2s. I went to TMO store after launch and their G2 already didn't stay in place. I held it upside down and the screen just hung from the phone. Now you may not have this issue right now but like all moving parts they will give out. Daily use of the keyboard will wear out the plastic parts of the hinges fast. So, in about two months when all the dual core hspa+ phones hit the market you'll wish you hadn't wasted your upgrade.

Don't know about you guys but I'm playing with both! Have my N1 since spring and made it my *****. Huge thanks to Evil's Desire HD!! Also, my wife just got the G2 and we trade every once in a while. I really like both phones.
Ive used the G2 more and more over the course of this week.
Updates:
-Nexus one call quality IS HORRIBLE compared to G2
-Nexus one RECEPTION is HORRIBLE compared to G2
-Nexus one battery is MODERATELY worse than the G2
Mytouch4G is going to be a joke.
You can NOT compare the craftsmanship of the G2 to the mytouch sorry.
G2 is like a macbook, mytouch line is like fisher price
i know you may say there is no comparison that is what people should realize as well...
A moderately faster processor and front facing camera isnt going to poop on the G2
That's why alot of you guys with a Nexus should take advantage of the chance to trade for a G2 on craigslist and get a phone with a higher resale value that will hold its 400 resale for at least 6-8 months whereas in 6-8 months the Nexus One will barely fetch 200-250.
Thats a big difference. And you get the benefit of using a faster phone that has better call quality and reception.
What's not to like...THE HINGEEEEEEEEE
STOP WHINING! there is nothing wrong with the hinge. The hinge problems are HATER PROBLEMS.
WAH WAH WAH when i hold my phone UPSIDE DOWN the keyboard comes out.

I'm glad your happy with your purchase, but how can you advocate getting this device without any mods/unlocks available for it, and on XDA of all places.
As of right now, I would gladly keep my Nexus one with the openness over most devices with better specs; how much fun is a stock device to play with for people who like to tinker?

Those aren't the only reasons to not switch.
There are those of us who just don't want keyboards. Or want bigger screens. Or both
I'm waiting for a 4.3" Android touch-only phone on T-Mobile (not the HD2).

Wow, aside from the keyboard, you just described my next phone to a T. I absolutely love my Nexus One and so far nothing has even tempted me. I like the size of the Evo's screen, but honestly it feels kinda sluggish compared to my N1. I think the Motorola T2 *might* be my next phone if Google doesn't try and do another "direct from Google" device. We shall see.....
Stfwayne: Don't be a troll
Glad you like your G2 but its pretty obv to me, based on your low post count and two main responses in this thread putting down every other phone but your own, that your just trying to illicit a heated response so chill...

You can't see the big picture so I will explain. Holding the phone upside down is just an example of the the higes are now. As the hinges get worn out more the phone will come apart in your pocket and if you dont grab it the right the the phone will get caught in your pocket; you'll answer the phone in your pocket or hang up on the person. Maybe the phone will catch the corners of your pocket and put more stress on the hinges. The point is in the long run you will have to put more attention into handling your phone than you should, b/c of the design.
I want a new phone without a keyboard.
Thanks tho
Hey G2 people!
I just got this phone for free and I was wondering, is there anything else new on the horizon that I should wait for (and therefore sell this phone)?
I have the option to go with this or the Vibrant, (was offered both). Not sure which route I should pick or if I shouldn't pick either at all and just sell it off and put that towards something else.
Any input on the matter would be great.
Take it, the ETF is $200 but they still fetch almost $400 on ebay (since the free G2 deal is harder to get now than it was in November).
I'm kinda holding off on selling mine yet, I might just do it and go get a Virgin Optimus if/when those come around. Trading down sounds like a yucky idea but I wouldn't mind a considerably cheaper bill <3

Oh, I wasn't going to cancel on my contract, since I'm perfectly happy with my HD2. Lawl.
The history of phones with proper keyboards is that this is only the SECOND decent one (after the DREAM). All the other phones with keyboards have some stupid crap that makes the keyboard useless (like improperly aligned buttons -- see anything motorola for example). The wait was 2 years. If history repeats, it could be another 2 years before another good phone becomes available.
Note that there will ALWAYS be something newer and better waiting to come in the future. This will NEVER change. At some point, you need to say to yourself... ok, that's enough waiting!

Hmm, thank you, you make a good point. How "fast" is the G2 under stock speeds? I am aware of the crazy 1.8 GHZ overclock going on with this processor (I'm still amazed that the processor doesn't melt). Do all of you guys run it at 1.8 GHZ all the time? Or do you just keep it at 1.4 or 1.5?
Also, any input about the Vibrant? Any users who moved to the G2 from the Vibrant?

I generally keep mine at the stock 800 MHz, sometimes I run it at about 1 GHz, and I only crank it up to 1.5 GHz for benchmarking. It runs really smooth with very little or no lag at 800 MHz even with live wallpapers and widgets, and at 1 GHz, it's perfect in my opinion.
I think this is the best phone you will see on T-Mobile for quite a while. To me, it's significantly better than the Vibrant, Nexus S, or the new MyTouch, and I think it will be solid for a few years as it is an excellent phone with a strong dev community.

Hmm, thanks for that input, I appreciate it. I guess I'm going to finally make the move from WinMo (I'm one of the few nutjobs who actually like Windows Mobile) to Android soon from my HD2. With the whole MAGDLR going on, I'm going to let that settle over the next few months before I permanently put Android on that.
I'm not sure about this, but does the G2 have a separate GPU chip (Like the Vibrant), or is the SNapdragon in the G2 an "does-everything" kinda of chip?

Android is light years ahead of WinMo. Android is so much smoother, more stable, and more usable. You will not be disappointed if you get the G2.
The GPU is integrated into the Snapdragon chip.

I had a pretty poor impression of the plastic housing of the Galaxy S devices based on comments like this one. But when I went to the store and actually played with one, I was pleasantly surprised. Yes, its plastic and light. But didn't feel as cheap or poorly made as I had imagined. The build quality seems fairly solid, but that's just a personal opinion. And not nearly impressive (or sturdy feeling) as a brushed aluminum housing.
Physical design aside, negative comments I've read here and elsewhere regarding various issues with the Samsung devices (CPU lag, GPS issues) as well as poor customer support have been enough to turn me away from that manufacturer. Plus, I've read posts by a couple users on here that have owned both a Galaxy S device and the Vision, and say that the Vision is a better phone hands-down.
Thanks redpoint. Your opinion on the matter alongside others here pretty much have me set that I didn't make the bad choice by getting the G2. (The rep initially flat out denied and didn't want to give it to me and tried to sell me on the Vibrant ).

Your welcome! I think the only thing you are really gaining with the Vibrant is the bigger screen, which is also slightly more vivid due to it being AMOLED. But direct comparisons in reviews I've read (haven't had a chance to compare side-by-side personally) say the display on the Vibrant/Galaxy S is only slightly better than the display on the G2. The display on the G2 is still really darned good!
The Galaxy S phones have a much better speaker as well as the nicer screen and bigger internal storage. The negative points of the Galaxy have been debated again and again, but it does handle multimedia better, as well as shooting better video and pictures, in my opinion.
I still wouldn't swap my DZ for one though, even if you paid me - I NEED my keyboard, plus compared to my friend's Galaxy S, the battery life is WAY better
You just have to try both out and see what you like. I personally have both the Vibrant and the G2 and I have to say I like the Vibrant much better. Not only is it significantly lighter and won't weigh my pants down, the screen on the Vibrant just appears so much nicer than on the G2. While the G2 screen is nice, it appears no different than the one on the Touch Pro 2 that I had.

I keep my max frequency in SetCPU at 1.5GHz, but I use the on demand governor so it's only that fast when it needs to be.

I haven't touched the clock speed -- running it at 800 MHz. The thing is just wickedly fast. Most of this has to do with having a very decent GPU, and out-of-this-world I/O performance thanks to the eMMC. Changing the clock speed really won't yield a major overall performance improvement -- it will just benefit functions that are computationally intense...
Thanks guys for all the feedback.
I've actually seen the Vibrant in person, while I only played with it for like a minute, I remember noticing how "artificial" the screen looked. The colors just "popped" too much, like it was on max saturation settings.
But yeah, I guess I'm excited to have a look at a stock android phone for the first time (I hate any skin over it).
Cheers!
Sold my galaxy s, too many damn problems. Fixable, yes, but the list is almost endless G2 is the first phone I've ever had that is 'complete' from my perspective. Other phones advertise a lot, but don't do what they say on the tin. The galaxy s screen was very nice and bright, but as soon as you hold it at a slight angle it goes blue tinted.

You sir, are smoking crack. The screen on the TP2 is not even close.
as an owner of both, i personally prefer the vibrant, when its not out for repairs. In the last 60 days i have had the vibrant fewer days than the repair shop.
Vibrant has a much larger screen, more basic layout, and is a LOT lighter. Desire Z has a slower processor but sense runs faster, and the more i use it the more i realize that sense is... nicer. just a better, more thought out layout for everything.
Personally given the choice i like my vibrant better, but its not very relyable and the canadian version anyways has a high tendancy to crash and burn, so given this information thats why i currently use my Desire Z.
In short: Vibrant has a much nicer screen, i like it better
Desire Z is more reliable, very nice phone well worth keeping considering vibrants issues
I have had the desire Z for 2 months now.. love it really.
Except a few things..:
1) it's weight.. this is just the biggest turn-off for me. I like traveling lightweight and I thought I'd get used to it but right now I really just prefer a lighter phone..
2) Do i really need the keyboard? it feels good to use the keyboard to type, yes, but there are times where I tried the onscreen keyboard and it worked too, and I don't think I was much slower.
3) The hinge just feels too loose.. makes the device feel cheap. I dont like having the feeling that my front screen will fall out anytime.
4) No frontfacing camera. I will be traveling abroad next semester, and the option to be able to see my family while I'm outside is nice.
Now there are things I really like and will miss if I trade this phone in:
1) the trackpad. I just love it! I use it to wake up my phone now. I use it to slide across my screens on launcherpro just because it's so fun. I really am thinking of keep it just for the safe of the trackpad. I also find the trackpad to be the easiest button for picture taking.
2) the keyboard allows you to see the screen while inputting, instead of the white input screen.
3) camera button for quick access to camera!
Well i'm currently still deciding.. the lightweight desire S is really attractive to me right now.. but I want the trackpad so bad.. sigh.. anyone here experienced how moving away from this phone is like?
I have thought about this as well, I really like the look and feel of the desire s. But and its a big but, I wouldn't only get one when the bootloader has been cracked. I don't like sense very much, so cm7 or another aosp build is a must for me.

I will answer your question, how does it feel moving away from this phone? - Miserable - Simple one word... Well... I haven't 100% moved away from my G2/DZ, I just needed one thing which this phone doesn't have, a Front Facing Camera, it was more important to me than to have a physical keyboard... and hence I purchased Moto Atrix. Great phone and all the goodies as higher res screen, dual core processor, etc... but nothing as much fun as owning a G2/DZ.
You can mod your G2/DZ, you get the sturdy and rock solid feel holding this phone in your hand, you have the DLNA support and also you can OverClock your phone...
I don't know how Desire S really feels so no comments.
If you don'r really like the heft, you don't really need the keyboard, go for any other phone, I am sure all the new phone have some or the other advantage over G2/DZ.
Note : Since I love this phone too much, i haven't let it go, i have it as my other phone, which I don't carry with me, but I usually play with my phone as soon as I get home... it becomes primary
GF's Desire S is a nice piece of kit. If you don't want a keyboard, I'd trade it. it's definitely zippier. Not enough to make me want to upgrade out of contract, though.
How about the htc sensation... that looks nice its a bit bigger though lol
I'm not sure if I can wait that long for the sensation though
Plus even the desire Z's cpu has been enough for my needs.. I don't really know why i would need duo-core.. unless it improves the battery dramatically which will be a different story.
Today I will meet someone who may want to buy my desire Z.
If it's sold today then I shall move to the next phone. If not, then I'll just keep it.
Just wish it was a bit lighter..
Getting a Desire S is, with all due respect, a pretty bad idea unless you can get it for very cheap.
I can understand your reasons for disliking the DZ, but the DS has nearly identical specs and there has been a big leap in processing power, especially now with the SGS2's Exynos processor which is a huge step up from the DZ's MSM7230.
The DS's specs were antiquated when it was released. If thos matters to you, you might want to look elsewhere
ive always been told if your gonna do something, do it right dont go and buy the desire s on a whim when the sensation is just around the corner lol
id save my money, keep the desire z if theres nothing wrong with it and when the sensation does come out, try it out before you buy it, if you dont like it then go for the desire s... the desire s will be cheaper then as well... so its win win
Yeah, Sensation is supposed to be out this or the next month, and even though I would say Desire S is a great phone and a viable replacement I would do at least, Sensation going retail in so short timespan is rendering it obsolete. Furthermore, I can hardly imagine that Desire S will get the developers attention here as Desire did as most of them already bought DHD. Sensation might end up with load of awesomeness though

no doubt about the sensation getting development.... i reckon the development around it will be somewhat like the htc hd2... which is also an amazing phone.
when htc make a huge deal over a phone, it usually means the developers are all over the phone. htc hd2, hd2 desire, htc desire hd, and the sensation lol
Just played with a work colleague's Galaxy S2 and now my Vision feels like the fat ugly friend you see standing with the tall hot chick in a nightclub
That phone is properly awesome...
I cannot live without a physical keyboard so I don't have the option of getting one, sadly.
Please say some stuff to make me feel better about my phone?

Consider it an evil of the technology treadmill. A newer product is typically going to be faster and better than an older one (unless the manufacturer really screwed up!). You'll drive yourself crazy envying every new phone that comes along that is newer than what you have. So unless you have wads of cash to buy every nice looking phone that comes out, most of us have to make a decision based on the choices you have at the time you want to upgrade, and live with it until you can afford the next upgrade. No doubt, even if you bought a Galxy S2, you would end up salivating the next "latest and greatest" in a few months. Appreciate the fact that you have a nice performing, solidly built phone with a hardware keyboard, that has (and will continue to have, for some time) great developer support.
Ya my roommate just got the g2x and now I hate my phone.

I know my phone is good and dev support is GREAT, which will allow it a decent enough lifespan for some time to come.
But I just wish someone would put out a super-phone WITH A DAMN KEYBOARD!! I don't care what it would cost to buy, I would buy it. Sure this phone can be OC'd quite nicely, but with the weak mono speaker, average camera and video, screen which is rubbish in direct sunlight, etc. it's not really my dream hardware :-/
Here's hoping the next Nexus comes with with a keyboard, dual (or quad!) core, a gig of ram and decent multimedia components!!

I know i'm in the minority on this one but screens can be too big. HD7 for example. Just looks gaudy and over the top to me.

I'm with you 4.3" is to big. My bro has a DHD and I find it uncomfortable to use.
My boss just got SGS2 and I have to admit I'm a bit jealous because it is awesome. But I can't see my self ever having a phone without a hardware keyboard so the S2 is a no go for me. I'm certain my next phone will be the successor to the G2, assuming that HTC backtrack on the whole bootloader thing.

I hear you about the boatloader. That is a dam shame any way you look at it.
I am not envy of any other phone that does not have a hardware keyboard!
If you want to deal with odin and lack of support for updates. Go samsung. They make nice hardware. But what good is the hardware with crap support to back it up.

Ditto. There may be faster bigger brighter phones out there, but the g1 and the g2 are such solid phones. They refuse to die. Specially g2 at 1.5ghz. It can still compete. Developers support is do big as compared to some other phones. Htc all the way. Hoping for unlocked bootloader on the sensation.

Indeed. My Z can do anyting I need from a phone including playing ps1 games and map keys to play with. What more can I ask for. I will never give it up unless there will be a new powerful mobile with hardware keyboard, which is layed out the same way as the Z keyboard where every other row is shifted.

I had an HD2 for ages, an S2 for a few days (then sold it because I could make £160 profit on e-bay due to people paying silly prices!), now I've just ordered a desire Z to give it a go (£263.39 on ebuyer inc VAT)!
Though the S2 was nice & the HD2 does the job, I'm now much more excited about having a hardware keyboard than anything the S2 had to offer!
Unless you dislike hardware keyboards, I agree there's no point having phone envy yet - the S2 does nothing that the HD2/Desire Z can do; it just does things more smoothly!
I would agree that there are phones out there that might be 'prettier' and provide some 'eye candy' but I don't think I would trade my DZ for any other device out there right now.
I too cannot live without a hardware keyboard and the DZ has one of the best keyboards I have ever used. It took some getting used to because of its size, but after that initial period, a keyboard has never felt better in my hands.
And while it may not have the fastest Dual Core Processor on the market, I have yet to find any set of tasks that my DZ can't handle. Throw in the unlocked bootloader and arguably the best developer support of any Android Device and you have a recipe for a long-lasting, competitive smartphone.
I won't even consider upgrading until we get a phone that looks like a 'G3'...
i work at best buy and i see this same situation almost everyday. technology is a love hate thing. you just have to realize that its going to be constantly changing, and getting better. lets not forget that the vision is still a highend phone, and kicks alot of phones asses. i love my g2, but i do see myself getting a htc sensation. ive come to realize that although the kb on the vision is amazing, its not something i have to have. the vision is a great phone, along with the desire hd, nexus s, mytouch 4g and all of the phones that came out the same time this one did. its awesome. you just have to realize that if it does what you want with no problem, then why hate?

I'd have to disagree with the fact the Vision is high end any more. On release yes, but 6mths down the road it's only just mid-range in pretty much all areas EXCEPT the keyboard. Single core chip (albeit a reasonable one), 512mb RAM (really? The DHD had 768mb), an average 5mp camera...
I think we make a lot of excuses for this phone, just to have the keyboard. I had to think long and hard about keeping my second one because of the questionable z-hinge, and decided that I'd have to live with it since there were no other qwertys coming out (except the Droid 2/Milestone 2 which is a no-no with encrypted bootloader).
I hate the weight of the thing, I hate the battery life (which although better than my old Desire, is still pretty poor as I work in a weak 3G area), I hate the fact I struggle to see the screen in the sunlight, I hate the sh*t-arse weak speaker which struggles to get above one decibel without distorting, and I hate the fact that HTC always cheap out on cameras, the video-recording is crap.
People come to me at work and ask what phone they should buy cos I'm kind of that guy who knows a little bit. And they've all seen the recent HTC marketing campaign here in the UK, they're like "Oh you have an HTC, do you think I should get this HTC (model)?" And I find myself saying "No, get this Samsung, or get this iPhone, they have better features that you would get use out of".
I know I'm not at the point where I want to give up the awesome dev support that HTC phones usually get, but I am at the point where I hope devs start supporting other brands a lot more too. Especially in light of HTCs locking of bootloaders, and the fact it's getting harder and harder to get full access to them. HTC has the big rep as the hacker's choice, but I don't think their hardware justifies it any more. Not at the moment at least.
Don't get me wrong, there is no other phone I'd rather have at the moment, since one doesn't exist. And the rom I'm on is frigging amazing. But if Samsung bring out an S2 with a keyboard then I'd have a heard time saying no to that, as would a lot of other people I imagine. I never thought I'd consider a Samsung after last year's update debacle, and I'm still hesitant now. But if enough devs get one, then they would sort out any probs the phone has.
OK, rant over!
I just watched an unboxing of the HTC Sensation coming to Tmobile ... GODDAMN .. that is a thing of beauty..

While this is true and all, I still think our phones are the best overall hardware for someone who needs a physical keyboard like myself. There are plenty of physical keyboard models out there (not as many as touch only of course), and there is still yet one to come out with better overall specs than this phone.

Yep, and that's the BIGGEST problem with Samsuck. They tend to make pretty incredible hardware (minus the vibrant, who the heck makes a camera without a flash nowadays?), but their support is absolutely abysmal. A friend here at work has an Epic 4G, and he's STILL on Eclair. Absolutely unacceptable support.
Okay, I posted a very similar thread in the Epic 4G section. I don't often come to this forum.
It seems to me that looking at all of the new releases, with the possible exception of the Motorola Droid series (although it seems the Droid Razr is getting more hype than the Droid 3 did, so it may not even count as a flagship), is the era of flagship physical keyboard phones dead?
Noteworthy to me is the fact that other than the Desire Z (and the Desire HD was arguably the flagship of its time, although IMO the Z was a better phone), there have been no new keyboard flagship phones from HTC or Samsung or most of the smaller makers.
What do you think is the future of keyboard phones?
So far all of them seem to be decidedly mid-range devices, not phones that set the bar, so to speak.
G3. Can't have a google dev phone without a keyboard yet.

Samsungs Captivate Glide looks very promising
http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/14/samsung-captivate-glide-and-doubletime-hands-on/
but for now just in the US..
I was a Keyboard Smartphoner from the beginning, but now, I think on the bigger screens its more easier to type fast on a virtual keyboard.
Maybe my next Phone is no more equipped with a hardware keyboard.
first fact for this is the wight and the design.. 180g and 15mm is not so "smart"

I wish it would be more "mainstream", have a 720p screen and LTE support. I'll stick with my Desire Z for now.
i don't get the race to the flattest phone in the world, i would say give some extra fat for all those extremely flatty things and slap bigger battery in them.
Desire Z feels like a phone, i like the way its think, not too thick, and im fine whit the weight, people can't carry 200 grams whit em anymore?
There's Droid 4 coming, 5row qwerty, looks promising, hope they include atleast 1,2Ghz cpu. But at this moment i don't think im going to change to a new phone within a year. Ill hope HTC comes up whit 5 row G3.

I'm not too big on super thin either -idk what's with this trend.
So far mostly mid-range phones - Glide is a midrange; the Galaxy Note or HTC Rezound are more like top-end.
I personally prefer something a little thicker and heavier in my hands ;D
Jokes aside, the heaviness of the phone gives me the feel of a better build quality, as opposed to the cheap feel of the S II, which my gf has. So light it weighs next to nothing...
feels like the wind can just blow it away...
Yes i hate thin light phones! I want a brick phone damn it! Give me a big screen a good keyboard (im thinking G1 style but full width) and a nice thick heavy battery that will last all day. Oh and i want one of them fancy induction chargers built into the case. And a nice creditcard chip thingy.

OMG that would rock my socks. I wonder, is there maybe a proper sized BT keyboard and a case?
Check Adapt ADK-100 Micro Keyboard (Amazon ASIN B003ZWGEW8) saying it's exactly the size of an iPhone 4. this is a comparison with the HD2: images.mobilityminded.com/2010/07/IMG_4444.jpg

My opinion is riding a subway, bus etc. Qwerty wins. Physical buttons will always be superior and more versatile/precise.
I do think phones are crafted by trends, had the G2 originally been launched with a tighter spring, this phone would have sold like crazy.
Although I'm happy with my phone as I think its funny when I catch people looking at my phone wondering which one it is or why my screen is green.

You seem to have missed the HTC DOUBLESHOT:
http://www.t-mobile.com/shop/Phones...px?cell-phone=T-Mobile-myTouch-4G-Slide-Black
I moved from the Desire to the Desire Z.
To me, a thin keyboard-less phone like the Desire is like an Aston Martin with a 1 litre engine in it. It may look nice but, it's missing the grunt to really get things done (functionality wise rather than cpu!).
With the Desire Z, I can snap open the keyboard and get far more screen real estate without having to have a software keyboard popping up. I can also do common tasks like copying and pasting faster and easily switch apps with shortcuts. I can pretty much touch type on my phone now, while walking for example without looking down.
Of course, we all know this, I just wish the public would realise the advantages of having a keyboard and then manufacturers would make more of an effort. Maybe if we all lectured friends, we can force a tipping point!

Well and at&t at that. Ugh.
The Glide has already been out in Canada for a couple weeks or so. Although Rogers is just as bad as AT&T probably.
Well, you got me there. Me and my brother enjoy the feel of keyboards on our phones. My G2 came across an lcd problem and my sister got me a G2x, good phone but couldn't enjoy the LG,since I'm an htc guy. Sold it,got a sidekick 4G, didn't like the way samsung made it. Sold that, bought a new LCD, fixed my G2. At the end of the day, I'm a Qwerty keyboard HTC guy. As for my bro, a HTC mytouch guy, he loves the Mytouch Slide 4G. We both came from a G1. I'm praying for the G3. *fingers crossed*

What I'm hoping for in the next year:
1.2 ghz dual core minimum
5 inch screen (4.5 inch minimum)
Qwerty 3-4 row I don't care
Hdmi out
Not samsung (wii controller won't work)
Must have decent battery life, most liekly ill be buying another fat mugen lol
preferred htc but its not really a big deal to me
Don't care about thick or thin
Honestly the desire z handles everything but the screen size and hdmi out want my n64 on the big screen! I'm hoping for gamecube/dreamcast emulators in the next years. These overclocked dual cores can easily handle it.

You couldn't PAY me to use a phone with a 5" screen. Screen ***ABSOLUTELY MUST*** be UNDER 4". Any bigger than that and it isn't a phone -- its a tablet, and no, I'm not interested in holding a tablet up to my head to make a phone call.
