Sorry to hear of your loss The refurbished phones I've received in the past have come in brown, generic looking boxes.
Not always the case. There are reports on xda that the refurbs that people have been getting have not been hardware locked. And even if it is there is a fix on the site for it. yep the best way to tell is when it comes in a brown generic box

It means that you cannot enter recovery/download mode using the hardware keys.

Don't take my word on it, but i think that when you call Asurion's for a replacement they send you a new one, and the replacements under warranty are refurbished.
With your new replacement you might want to be extra careful with it. I was told on a phone I had to replace that it would no longer be covered under manufacturers warranty through T-Mobile and if you ever had any problems you would have to go through Asurion for any replacement. This was a few years ago so I am not sure if it is correct still or not but I thought I would give you a heads up from what they told me when I replaced a phone.

New phones come in new boxes with the tape still on them, since they have never been opened. It'll still have all the factory packaging on them, etc.
If your phone is on backorder, then you have a 99% chance of getting a new phone (I got 2 brand new replacements ).
If not, then you have maybe a 50% chance of getting a brand new phone.
Maybe you'll be lucky and get the phone I just sent back. Only thing that was wrong is that I locked myself out of it (it was a brand new replacement, locked myself out the next day ). I did put the purple cover on it to keep the black one, though, and it was hardware-locked XD

This is true. When I locked myself out of the replacement, it was through Asurion.
And the phone was backordered, so I had to wait almost two weeks to get a replacement.
But it was a replacement phone. Came straight from the factory, pretty much, judging by the date on the box (dated 3 days before I recieved it).
Odd thing is for my first replacement, they were backordered, but I got the phone the next day.

Useless info, because the deductible depends on the phone type. TP2 is a cheap, old phone compared to the Vibrant.
The deductible for Vibrants and G2s is $130 US.
My G2 has extremely weak vibration to the point that I think there is something wrong with the motor (or its just too old). Unfortunately, I don't have warranty anymore so I was wondering if there is any way I can fix this.
The phone is less than a year old, how do you not have warranty anymore?
Or am I missing something?
The reason I don't have warranty is because I bought the phone from another person (ebay).
Ahh I hear ya. Well I have heard from dozens of people who say that HTC has honored the warranty even though possession has changed hands. I'd try and see if you get lucky.
Try registering the device with HTC first, via their website. If you're lucky the prior owner won't have done that and it'll look even more legit that you are the original owner. I would definitely NOT mention to the rep that you bought it on ebay though.
Good luck

+1. and I would really like to know how to shorten the vibrations. with chomp I use a custom vibrate pattern that is 3 short pulses and it's a lot more bearable and discreet than the super loud normal pattern. only downside is it only works for sms and I want to know how to change it so every notification no matter what will be that 3 short pulses...

There is a free app in the Market called Missed Call, which lets you edit vibration patterns for any type of alert, including calls and SMS. It works quite well for what you are requesting.

So I managed to register the phone on the website. Do I just call HTC and explain the situation and pretend like I bought the phone from them (their website)?
Also, should I contact HTC or T-Mobile since it is a T-Mobile G2? I am currently using T-Mobile if that makes a difference. I don't know where the owner purchased the phone from...

Even though you didn't purchase the device from TMo they will still honor the manufacturer warranty. It follows the phone not the owner, call TMo and explain that it doesn't vibrate that hard and such and they should go about testing to see if there is water damage, etc and then send you a replacement

On HTCs site, when I registered my phone, their limited warranty explicitly stated that the warranty was only good for the original buyer. I have heard more times than not about them honoring the warranty for 2nd owners, but still, the actual wording is clear. They COULD deny it if they wanted to require proof of purchase and one could not garner such receipt.

That's why you need to call T-Mobile first...they always honor the manufacturer warranty, I did this with the MyTouch Slide when I bought it second hand and then took a dive and had to get it replaced
Thanks for the suggestions guys. I will call T-Mobile first and then HTC (if something goes wrong). I'll let you know the results. Here's to hoping for the best.

So I called T-Mobile and they are willing to send me a replacement while they take a look at my phone. Before I send my phone off to them, I plan on doing a factory reset. Should I also unroot my phone, or does it not really matter?

Yes unroot via the provided directions somewhere around here...
Is there now a solution? My vibrating motor clanks as an very very old one.
I bought my Desire Z on ebay - so I have no warranty any more.
Is there a replacement and even a manual how to change?
Is this a common problem or I'm just bad luck.
BTW my wife has my old Desire and it is silent while it vibrate. So I think the Desire Z motor is running down...
I stared getting some screen issues.. I'd boot the phone and it would vibrate and make the booting noise but nothing would appear on screen. Once it fully booted if i pressed the lock button a few times the screen would come on but with everything inverted and distorted (wish I'd a picture). Explained this to htc support and I eventually posted my phone to them. (they couldn't collect it after 3 weeks of "computer system errors, so they eventually told me to post it to them because they're system wouldn't accept my address) So now, 2 weeks later I get my phone back, still the same firmware version on it (which was untouched stock, no root or s-off) with the exact same issue. I checked the software version and they didn't even flash a new update to it, it still had the original 2.2. The warranty wasn't void because the sheet they sent back with it said the phone had been repaired, but not what they had done.
Do I send it again? wait what could be another month? I'm not looking of sympathy, I just want to know if anyone else has had similar issues. After spending 500 euro on a phone I'd like it to work
Call them up and *****, their service needs to up to par or beyond if they want to be able to charge that much for a phone. Have them send you a new one, and then you send yours.

Wow lol chill. That was my personal opinion. With t-mobile you call them if you call htc they will just say talk to your carrier. You want me to reword my self? Well just put I suggest you call your carrier they might be able to send you a replacment phone. So don't start triping haha wow

yeah I'm in Ireland, I bought it off a website off contract. I emailed the website just there to see if they'll send me a replacement. bleh
and at this point I might just call htc and *****, already spent like 2 hours on the phone to them over the last few week I'm almost friends with them now...
Just off the phone with htc, apparently the tick sheet with the phone info lost some details along the way. The problem on one sheet was that it was constantly rebooting, and on the other on it was display issues. So instead of fixing the display they replaced the motherboard and sent it back... they're collecting it again monday...
Has anyone been able to sucessfully swapped the bad screen phone for a good one with HTC?
I am asking because I have a bad screen one and I would like to do it.
Thank you in advance for the reply.
i seen a poll here the other day about this. some one posted up the percentages for getting a good screen back from HTC and T-mobile. both were pretty high. i got mine first MT4G march 11th with a good screen from radioshack.
shouldnt cost anything since your going through warranty so shouldnt hurt to atleast go ahead and try.
I swapped my wife's. Told them people couldn't hear me. They called me to see how clear it was.. I put a wad of toilet paper over the mic to muffle my voice. They next day aired me a new one. Was sweet.

Shouldn't be an issue to get a new screen/phone. It was a pretty popular issue that they were aware of.
Thank you all for your responses. I will definitely give it a shot today. How much difference can you notice from the bad and the good screen?
Had 2 with good screens sent to me

Just sent one directly to HTC (bought second hand) a week ago. It's already on the way back. I've complained about the screen visibility from the sides and in bright daylight, and attached a note with one of the screen comparison pics found on the net. I'll see what screen I get in a few days.
I spoke to T-mobile this weekend after I traded my G2 for what turned out to be a MT4G with a bad screen. Since I had insurance, they put the order through for me immediately, but unfortunately it hasn't shipped out yet. Won't get it till next week at this rate...
My original MT4G had a good screen, but a bad power button. The replacement I got at the store was another unit with a good screen, and the power button was different, so the guys at the store pulled a bunch of them out and tested them all. They all had good screens.
I think the likelihood of getting bad screens has gone down with the newer shipments. They all also seem to be made in China, while some of the older ones were made in Taiwan.
I called HTC and they said to send it in for "repair". That means that I could be without a phone for like 10 or more days. That sucks. Why cant they just replace it and thats it?
Anyway, I havent taken it to T-Mobile becuase I bought mine from Craigslist (new). So I am not sure what they would say. If they ask me for prove of purchase or something like that, I am out of luck.
Any suggestions?

add insurance to your account, and then say you dropped it and now the screen doesn't look right. don't say it came like that, because then they will tell you it's a warranty issue and not an insurance issue.

Call tmobile and make sure they have your ime #. Hang up then call back in a few days with the complaint. They are not going to ask you where u bought it, and if they do lie and say it was at a store
just wanted to add my 2 cents real quick...
for anyone that doesn't know when you swap your phone they send you a refurbished one to fulfill your warranty requirements.
normally refurbished phones sell for a 1/3 of the price as it was brand new so its pretty much like swapping out your $500 phone for a $150 phone...
just something to think about
My replacement streak arrived today but its a bit strange
I was under the imprecation that Dell were going to pick up my streak to repair it not send me a brand new one(not that im complaining).
And my old streak was not picked up(qdl tool would prop have fixed it) am I supposed to send it to them or do they pick it up.
I only ask as If i have got to send it to them then I will, but if they were supposed to pick it up I will wait to see if I get any phone calls from them. Obviously I don't want to ring them to ask them unless I really have to.
Any one who can shed some light on this turn of good luck would be much appreciated.

Dude, What the hell. Why are you here?
Return home from an oversea business trip, on arrived home and I discovered that I've taken someone else luggage which looks identical to mine. The content was full of real diamonds, should I phone and inform the airport and return it or keep it and wait to see if anyone contact me in the near future. What do you think?
ANOTHER THOUGHT .. You could box it up and wait for Dell to call you about the return. That way it shows Karma that you are prepared to return it but if they don't call you .... (shrug)

You are lucky. I have been waiting over three weeks and was told won't be any until end of September 2011 and it will be a refurbish. I am p****sed off with the situation. If you received it by mail, the return label is in the box. I was told that when I receive replacement to ship back to them using the prepaid return label. Enjoy your new Streak.

Why did you ask for an exchange? is the same problem with the internal sd card?
Put the old one back in the box the new one came in. Wait a few days and you'll get a shipping label in the mail. Stick the label on the box and call fed ex to schedule a pick up. I've already got three replaced. Went this way every time
I was sent a replacement phone that was refurbished. I put the old one in the box that the refurbished one came in. Dell also included the return label. I'd say send it back and avoid any hassles.
If you look at your order status online, you will see they already charged you $1164.99 when they sent you the replacement base unit. ( how they figure this amount out is beyond me, when new streak sold for $300usd)
So if you don't return the old one you have with the shipping label they provided, they will first call to remind you, and send this to collection agency if they don't eventually get it back. At least they have your name, phone # and address

Nice advice! Not only you are telling him to commit fraud, you are telling him to commit fraud in a very stupid way. I don't know where you live, but in the states this could involve the FBI, and you don't want them knocking on your door.

I didn't ask for a exchange, I thought mine was going to be repaired I didn't know that I was getting a new phone till it arrived.
The problem with the phone was files were either not copying to my sd card(tried 3 different cards) or when i downloaded things to my sd card or copied apps over they disappeared I think the sd card wasn't mounting properly.
